Trollope begins his masterful series of Parliamentary novels, but here he is concerned with the politics of love and the demands of society. Alice Vavasor, lovely, intelligent and just a bit prudish, is torn between two men -- the upright if plodding John Gray, and the evasive yet alluring George Vavasor. She has accepted and rejected their proposals of marriage, uncertain of her own worthiness and the worth of her love. Alice's dilemma makes for a sharp exploration of free choice, a woman's role in a constricted society, and self-examination to the point of emotional stalemate. Add to this the predicament, on a grander scale, of Lady Glencora Palliser, Alice's cousin. The energetic, vivacious and utterly charming Glencora is married to Plantagent Palliser, heir to a ducal throne, who is a man who finds passion in Parliamentary proceedings, not people. Glencora is still pining for the beautiful ne'er-do-well, Burgo Fitzgerald, whom she was forced to leave behind in order to marry as she had been groomed to. Glencora feels that her young marriage is a sham. She feels she cannot live a life without ardent love, that the future for her is bleak without a burning, almost tragic, passion. Here, Trollope examines a marriage in its first tentative stages (in the Palliser novels he gives us the most discerning and moving portrait of a marriage in literature), with all of the self-sacrifice, compromise and reluctant devotion that marriage entails. The novel's third subplot, involving Alice's aunt's choice between somewhat unsuitable suitors, provides a comic, yet still subtly touching, foil to the two main stories. Throughout, Trollope brilliantly evokes the power of society on its players, their private tumult, their public displays of decorum or disgrace. One scene in particular, at a fabulous ball, is among the most thrilling in literature, because Trollope manages to convey, amid the throngs of idle partygoers, the despair, the conflicted psychological motivations, the terror and anguish of two star-crossed lovers, Glencora and Burgo, whose passions are so different: hers a naive yet heartfelt romance, his a self-centered quest for an end to financial woe whatever the emotional cost and public scandal. Neither party is self-aware enough to change here, but one eventually learns to, and finds hope by overcoming the hestitation of commitment brought on by misdirected ardor. The only way to grow is through sacrifice, and fearless self-knowledge. The only way truly to live is through doing the next right thing, publicly and privately. Trollope takes us through the agonizing conflicts of his characters, drawn with a depth and nuance matched by few in literature. This is a towering achievement.

By John Austin Having almost completed chronicling the ecclesiastical affairs of Barchester in 1864, Anthony Trollope began a further series of six novels, this time depicting the English political scene of his day in general and the members of the Palliser family in particular. This one, the first of the six novels, carries a title that carries no hint of any political content whatsoever. Indeed, the "her" of the title is a perverse young lady, Alice, who refuses for almost 900 pages to marry the man whom all agree is so eminently suitable. Alice is one of at least four women that Trollope presents, all of whom struggle to answer the question, "What should a woman do with her life?" As usual with his female characters, Trollope is a sensitive, sure and unsentimental narrator. The business of the men, and the political issues they address, seem to consist in keeping solvent, gaining a seat and an office in parliament, and sniffing out any parliamentary intrigues. All of which might suggest that this is one early Victorian novel that today's feminists could pick up, read, and enjoy.I enjoy any Trollope novel immensely. No matter how slow moving, no matter how often he intrudes to comment on his characters and tell us what he does and does not know about them, every page of his novels and perhaps every sentence carries the stamp of a great novelist and language craftsman at work. Nevertheless, I must admit that "Can You Forgive Her?" has featured by my bedside for more than a year. This is not, therefore, a recommendation for something to quickly and thrillingly absorb the reader. It takes a long time to get to the novelist's final words, "But as they all ... have forgiven her, I hope that they who have followed her story to its close will not be less generous".

If you let the fact that he was a Victorian scare you off, you will be cheating yourself out of some great entertainment. Just as the characters in Thackeray's Vanity Fair are 3-D, so are Trollope's. None of them are perfect individuals, and none of them lack a parallel to people we all know today. CYFH is engaging, as are his other works. The insight into British Parliament is fascinating and educational, but you are passively educated rather than drilled. By the time you read three of his books, you will know an amazing amount about Victorian-era British Parliament without realizing you ever learned anything. Did Planty Palliser and Phineas Finn teach me *that much?* is what you'll ask yourself. Learning has never been this entertaining since John Dos Passos, and characters haven't had this much blood flowing through them since Dickens and Thackeray.

The fun of reading a parody is heightened by acquaintance with the material being burlesqued. Although Washington Irving confessed, in the “Author’s Apology” added to the edition of 1848, that his idea had been to parody Samuel L. Mitchell’s A Picture of New York (1807), a knowledge of Mitchell’s book is not necessary to the enjoyment of Irving’s work. The parody is only part of the humor of A History of New York, By Diedrich Knickerbocker, which was originally begun as a collaboration between Irving and his older brother, Peter, and had the original title A History of New York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty. The work reveals the interest of its twenty-five-year-old author in history, customs, and etymology; the burlesquing of several literary styles—his notebook supplies the names of some of the authors parodied, names now largely forgotten—reveals Irving as a literary critic. Irving was in the process of finishing the book when his fiancé, Matilda Hoffman, died suddenly. At first he was too stunned to continue working, then he returned to the manuscript as an anodyne for his grief and finished it quickly. About the same time, he conceived the idea of ascribing the authorship to an imaginary and eccentric Dutchman. The hoax was elaborately contrived and began when the public press printed a story about the disappearance of a man named Diedrich Knickerbocker. A short time later, an advertisement appeared, supposedly signed by the owner of the boardinghouse where Knickerbocker had lived, offering for sale “a very curious kind of written book,” which the landlord ostensibly had printed to reimburse himself for the old gentleman’s unpaid rent. On December 6, 1809, A History of New York, in seven parts and 130,000 words, was first offered for sale. Legends about its reception spread rapidly. A Dutch woman in Albany threatened to horsewhip the author for his slanderous account of an ancestor. A number of famous New York families reportedly prepared to sue the publisher. On the other hand, Sir Walter Scott was reported to have complained of sore ribs from laughing so hard over the book. Irving’s style ranges from playful to erudite. Evidence of his wide reading appears on almost every page, and voluminous footnotes clothe it with pseudo-scholarship. At first, readers thought these references were part of the humor; later scholars began tracing them to actual, though minor, Roman and Greek writers. The author’s pleasantries are apparent from the beginning. Book 1, according to him, is “learned, sagacious, and nothing at all to the purpose,” and he suggests that the idle reader skip it. When Irving embarks on a study of cosmogony, or creation of the world, he advises the reader to “take fast hold of his skirt or take a short cut and wait for him at the beginning of some smoother...

Each paragraph is a howl or chuckle. Quite a work of genius. And the level of insight relevant today is remarkable. 1809 is not dated in the hands of one like this.

"A Knickerbocker's History of New York" is a reissue of Washington Irving's classic work of literature that earned him quite the place in early American Literature. His story, offering a satirical view of New York and its history, holds strong centuries later as it was published in the early nineteenth century. "A Knickerbocker's History of New York" is a fine pick for those who want to see why Washington Irving has the acclaim he has as a literary legend.

In this powerful debut novel, three American soldiers haunted by their actions in Afghanistan search for absolution and human connection in family and civilian life. Wintric Ellis joins the army as soon as he graduates from high school, saying goodbye to his girlfriend, Kristen, and to the backwoods California town whose borders have always been the limits of his horizon.  Deployed for two years in Afghanistan in a directionless war, he struggles to find his bearings in a place where allies could at any second turn out to be foes. Two career soldiers, Dax and Torres, take Wintric under their wing. Together, these three men face an impossible choice: risk death or commit a harrowing act of war. The aftershocks echo long after each returns home to a transfigured world, where his own children may fear to touch him and his nightmares still hold sway. Jesse Goolsby casts backward and forward in time to track these unforgettable characters from childhood to parenthood, from redwood forests to open desert roads to the streets of Kabul. Hailed by Robert Olen Butler as a "major literary event," I'd Walk with My Friends If I Could Find Them is a work of disarming eloquence and heart-wrenching wisdom, and a debut novel from a writer to watch.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Quietly epic, it's a story that sneaks up on you By Nathan Webster I'm always glad to come to books before any reviews or advance buzz has really settled in, leading to preconceptions about what I'm supposed to think. So while this book has gotten some pre-publication notice I really had no idea what it was about, beyond the "veterans/homecoming" story angle.Author Jesse Goolsby has done a very good job of creating a sprawling narrative that deftly and subtly covers decades of time - before and after his three main characters serve in Afghanistan. While it's a "war story" in the sense that Afghanistan connects the lives of the characters, it's really a life story - what got them there, and what comes after. There is nothing easy about any of it. The book's promotional material hints at "absolution," but I didn't really see it that way - the central event doesn't seem so dramatic they would need redemption for it. But, I'm also not sure they were ever looking - rather, they were just living. To me, the story comes down to the costs of our choices, and what we can forgive and what we can't.The three main soldier characters - Wintric, Dax and Torres are mixed with a selection of strong female characters, which was good to see. So I certainly don't think this book is male-focused. That's a big plus, among recent war-related literature that often takes too male-centric a view. These women - wives and children - are equal characters in every measure .It's difficult to do it justice without going too much into the narrative's events - and I just don't want to reveal anything that isn't obvious in the plot early on. I'll say that there were a couple plot twists that seemed unnecessarily melodramatic - but that's not a flaw, just my preference. I understood how they fit into the story Goolsby was telling, even if they were a little much for me. But that aside, the vast majority of the story just sneaks up on you, in how quietly wrenching it all can be.My favorite aspect is what Goolsby did with time - some books telegraph their 'epic' status, and others are stories that you get to page 250 and you realize it's been epic all along, and that's how I feel about this book.Anyone interested in stories from the wars will like this - and veterans themselves will appreciate the honest and often hard look at homecoming that Goolsby presents here. This one is going to get some buzz as its publication approaches, and it will deserve it.

A Stunning Debut By knittingmom I’d Walk With My Friends If I Could Find Them by Jesse Goolsby is literary work of astonishing depth and beauty, and yet one that is deeply heart-wrenchingly sad and at the same time hopeful. The story surrounds the lives of three American soldiers, Wintric, Dax, and Torres, each of whom struggles in their own ways, and while each man’s story is told, the book focuses most on the struggles that occur after the men’s deployments in Afghanistan. What I really enjoyed and some readers may not enjoy as much as I, is how Goolsby tells the three men’s stories in a non linear manner, I felt this brought the story to life and made the characters all the more realistic. I’d Walk With My Friends If I Could Find Them reads a lot like a memoir and yet it is a work of gut-wrenching literary fiction. Goolsby’s has crafted a beautifully written and eloquent debut and one I would recommend to those who enjoy well-written fiction as well as those who are in book discussion groups.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. which I much enjoyed in this book By Katey Schultz I was most impressed by Jesse Goolsby's debut novel because of its breadth. He spans decades of three soldiers' lives (mostly on the homefront) and fearlessly goes into bedrooms, backwoods, and on a few combat missions that few authors can render so precisely and efficiently. Above all else, Gooslby is a master of dialogue, which I much enjoyed in this book, and which also had me laughing out loud from time to time.

“Almost Home by Frank Marcopolos is a fun and fast-paced novel about the seedy side of student life on a college campus in upstate New York—a netherworld, like any college town, where young adults create lives for themselves, yet are too young to realize the consequences of their actions. Almost Home keeps you in its thrall. The language rings true—and reads seamlessly within each character’s alternating chapters. The vivid atmosphere settled me in a sleepy burg where the cultural and social center was the college. The powerful and vivid atmosphere, much the same as when I was in college, although much more hypnotic and alluring, goes further. It seduces one to remain on the cusp of adulthood forever. In Almost Home that powerful temptation seems possible—at the price of selling one’s soul.” — Kathleen Maher, Author of Diary of a Heretic

Review "I started reading this under the assumption that it'd be a very sports-centric novel & was therefore surprised to find out that it was actually much more than this. The plot has several twists & turns & explores the overall drama of college life with particular attention being paid to the more seedy aspects.I found the book to be cleverly written and fast-paced." - Killien Reviews"A bildungsroman, a satire, a conspiracy theory, a grotesque parody, thoroughgoingly entertaining, and a sports novel...a wonderful read." - Hopeless Books, Uninc

And I had no desire to read a book about college students and their escapades. But, I bought Almost Home after joking around with Frank Marcopolos on Twitter.Okay, so now the book is in my Kindle and I feel obligated to at least give it a try. Protagonist is over testosteroned, but I keep turning the pages. Finished the book. It's well written and if it's your sort of thing, you'll like it--a lot.

Almost Home By Kathleen Maher "Almost Home" by Frank Marcopolos is a fun and fast-paced novel about the seedy side of student life on a college campus in upstate New York--a netherworld, like any college town, where young adults create lives for themselves, yet are too young to realize the consequences of their actions. The story is told in alternating voices between two players on the school's baseball team: Enzo, a one-time star pitcher who has taken to drinking heavily and seems destined to become one of the sad aging locals who "could have been a contender," and Budski, a power hitter and budding gangster who runs the local bad-boy fraternity. Budski's main interest is making money, and he has all sorts of businesses on the side, most of them illegal. The two are in conflict from page one, when Enzo stumbles upon the death of a young stripper at a party in Budski's fraternity house. Budski cleverly chooses to keep enemies his close and so makes Enzo an honorary fraternity brother. In the evil spirit, he later elects Enzo to be the the spokesman (and guinea pig) for a steroid-spiked sports drink that could make them rich.Stirring the pot are Jenny, a wild girl, and Shannon, a more or less "good" girl who keeps Enzo (barely) on the right path. When Enzo finally wakes up the fact that Budski is not only taking advantage of him--but could ruin his life--the conflict between them erupts.I read "Almost Home" in one sitting. (All right, I ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner but after fixing them, I read while I ate. Usually I resist this temptation if the book's on my Kindle.)But "Almost Home" keeps you in its thrall. The language rings true--and reads seamlessly within each character's alternating chapters. The vivid atmosphere settled me in a sleepy burg where the cultural and social center was the college. The powerful and vivid atmosphere, much the same as when I was in college, although much more hypnotic and alluring, goes further. It seduces one to remain on the cusp of adulthood forever. In "Almost Home" that powerful temptation seems possible--at the price of selling one's soul.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Almost Home By Valerie Bowen "Almost Home" by Frank Marcopolos is far from the average college based novel we are used to. Frank takes the reader on a journey through the eyes of two very different characters. One character (Barry Budski)being from a wealthy family spends his time finagling others to follow his dreams of becoming an entrepreneur, while the other (Enzo Prinziatto) spends most of his time chasing after the girl of his dreams. Both characters are involved in the college baseball team, but clearly one is more dedicated than the other. After getting into this novel I found it very hard to put down. I just needed to know what was going to occur between the two characters who where clearly raised very differently (one with morals, and one with less) The two characters blended together perfectly to make the reader route for the underdog so to speak. The way the author brought life into all the characters in his novel, made me feel as if I was there on campus with them.Great reading, thank you Frank Marcopolos for a refreshing look into the life of frat parties, baseball and the drive it takes to achieve the dream.

Excerpt from Illustrated Manual of Operative Surgery and Surgical AnatomyIn presenting to the American Student of Surgery the beautifully illustrated work of MM. Bernard and Huette, the editors flatter themselves that they have contributed to the supply of a want which has not been unfrequently experienced heretofore, viz.: a complete and concise picture of the science and art of Operative Surgery, in its present advanced and perfected condition, in a portable form. The admirable and extensive works of Bourgery and Jacob, and Prof. Velpeau, with the translation of the latter under the auspices of Prof. Mott, and the equally excellent treatise on Operative Surgery by Prof. Pancoast of Philadelphia, can never be replaced by the present work. Yet its compactness and portability will render it more desirable to the student as a companion in the lecture and dissecting room, where its copious and graphic illustrations will assist him materially in acquiring correct general ideas as to the nature and objects of the individual operations of surgery; whilst for more minute and varied details with regard to their history and numerous modifications, the less accessible and more expensive treatises alluded to can be consulted at a more advanced period of study. In fact they are better calculated for works of reference to the practitioner of surgery, than as text books for the student, designed to set forth concisely the elements of the art.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A tearjerker of a novella about fathers, daughters, and alternate worlds. Reviewers have called Lou Aronica’s novel BLUE “compelling,” “beautifully written,” “a story to remember and cherish,” and “one of those books that everyone should find a moment to read.” Readers have said it was “a great inspiration,” “I’ve never been more moved or inspired,” and “one of the best books I’ve read.” Now comes this prequel novella, a short work that provides the essential story behind the story. UNTIL AGAIN tells of a decidedly real-world event: the final weekend in the breakup of a marriage. For Chris Astor, the divorce is not something he wants, primarily because of the distance it will put between his ten-year-old daughter Becky and himself. Juxtaposed against this is a critical event in Tamarisk, the bedtime-story fantasy world that Chris and Becky created when Becky was much younger. Miea, the university-age princess of Tamarisk fears that her world has become a terribly dangerous place…but she could not possibly have imagined where that danger will lead her and the people she loves. “If you have read BLUE, then reading Until Again is a necessity. This short novella gives you more insight on how these endearing people lived and loved in BLUE. If you haven’t read BLUE yet, then both of these books should be in your TBR pile!” – Confessions of a Real Librarian “If you have read BLUE by author Lou Aronica and loved the magical world of Tamarisk and missed Chris, Becky and Princess Miea then you are in for a treat.” – Cheryl’s Book Nook “If you have not read BLUE, you don’t want to miss it and you should not miss UNTIL AGAIN either. Another fantastic book by Lou Aronica as he finishes this chapter in the lives of Chris and Becky.” – Single Titles

By Cheryl Koch If you have read Blue by author Lou Aronica and loved the magical world of Tamarisk and missed Chris, Becky and Princess Miea than you are in for a treat. Mr. Aronica has written a prequel to Blue titled Until Again. This short book takes readers back to where it all began. In this book, Chris and his wife are getting a divorce. Becky and her father, Chris only have one night a week with each other. Though, that is not much time, Chris cherishes every moment he has with Becky and this includes their story time. Chris has been telling Becky about the land of Tamarisk and the Princess Miea.I grew close to Chris and Becky in Blue, so it was nice to revisit with them again, even if it was for a brief bit. To be honest, I never really gave much thought to going back in time and wondering what started Blue off. Mr. Aronica was that good of an author that I didn't have questions. Though after reading Until Again, I am glad, Mr. Aronica wrote this book. I could get a much broader overall picture of Tamarisk and the characters. Until Again is a nice prequel. Fans of Blue will enjoy this short story.

I gave the book 4 1/2 stars and fell in love with the story and characters. When Aronica contacted me about reviewing Until Again, the prequel to Blue, I had to say yes. A chance to find out about these amazing characters before all the events in Blue transpired? Yes please! The prequel follows Chris Astor and the divorce that he is going through. While not too sad to be divorcing his wife, he is devastated that he won't be able to see his daughter, Becky, as much. The father and daughter have a tradition of weaving tales of the fantasy world Tamarisk, with Princess Miea and her mystical land. Until Again shows readers the background of some major events that lead to the plot lines in Blue, and I recommend both of these novels. Even if you don't normally read fantasy, give Lou Aronica a chance. He spins a masterful story, touching and emotional, that will leave you thinking about these characters far long after you've closed the books.

Interesting tale, which is told from two parallel worlds By Cheryl M-M Interesting short prequel into the parallel worlds of Becky and Chris (father and daughter) and the land of Tamerisk. The two of them read a story to each other each night, a story they have made up and created the characters for. At the same time the reader reads the events in this land of Tamerisk, which are happening as they are created. I won't give away too much. It is good concept and I shall be reading the next full novel Blue to see what happens to the characters.

'The first and last thing I do every day is see what strangers are saying about me.'

Kitab Balasubramanyam has had a rough few months. His girlfriend left him. He got fired from the job he hated for writing a novel on company time, but the novel didn’t sell and now he’s burning through his mum’s life insurance money. His father has more success with women than he does, and his Facebook comments get more likes. Kitab is reduced to spending all of his time in his flat with his brother Aziz, coming up with ideas for novelty Tumblrs and composing amusing tweets. But now even Aziz has left him, travelling to America to find his doppelganger.

So what happens when Kitab Balasubramanyam’s only internet namesake turns up on his doorstep and insists that they are meant to be friends?Meatspace is a hilarious and troubling analysis of what happens when our lives become nothing more than an aggregation of shared content, when our online personas are more interesting than real life. A brilliant follow-up from an acclaimed young novelist writing at the sharp edge of modern life.

Review 'Like Douglas Coupland's Generation X, this novel captures a cultural moment' - Guardian 'An anarchic, self-involved and admirably honest portrait of a bookish life lived in the brave new digital world' - New Statesman 'Chilling' - Observer 'Buzzing with streetwise smarts and satirical barbs, it's a thoughtful, often hilarious, meditation on a young writer's loneliness in the digital age' - Independent on Sunday 'Brilliant stuff ' - Londonist 'Hilarious and disturbing' - Stylist 'Meatspace is funny. Damn funny. You should really switch off your computer and read it' - Matt Haig, author of The Humans 'Meatspace is the greatest book on loneliness since The Catcher in the Rye' - Gary Shteyngart, author of Super Sad True Love Story 'Totally original and funny and humane' - Sathnam Sanghera, author of The Boy with The Topknot 'Meatspace is, simply, one of the finest novels I have ever read about modern life and modern living. Douglas Coupland, Junot Diaz, Chuck Palahniuk and Jennifer Egan: stick them in a blendr, and out comes this amazing new novel by one of the UK's most distinct voices' - James Smythe, author of The Machine

In a world of online interactions, we are all bodily removed from other people while simultaneously connected to them and apprised of their every action. So what becomes of the real world? That space is also the title of Nikesh Shukla's novel, Meatspace, which is fraught with consequences for both digital and physical actions.Kitab is a new author whose first book was recently released, but he's had a series of unfortunate events in his life that have him in a downward spiral of depression and digital reliance. Fired for writing his book at work, struggling with book sales, and his girlfriend leaving him drives Kitab to spending his time in his flat with his brother/roommate Aziz. While googling random things online, Aziz and Kitab decide to get tattoos and also stumble upon their doppelgangers. Interacting with doppelgangers online is one thing, but once confronted in meatspace, their lives get interesting in a way that doesn't translate well in the nebulous digital ether and causes confusion for all involved. The narrative is eerily resonate with contemporary audiences who seem to be solely driven by their online personas and status (and it's times like these that I wholeheartedly embrace my lack of a smartphone to stay "connected" 24/7). The story developed quite naturally, at least until the ultimate intervention that leads Kitab to reevaluate his life; they way that the confrontation occurs felt as if it was plopped down as the story needed to get wrapped up. The confrontation and reveal of the psychological aspect of the narrative could have happened a bit more organically than Kitab's ex-girlfriend and father suddenly showing up at his flat. Similarly, the aftermath could have been rather interesting to explore further. In the book's structure, the alternating perspectives offered by Aziz's blog and Kitab's narration was enjoyable and demonstrated the two sides of the screen in online life, trolls and all.Overall, I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

He fills voids in his life with social media. But social media cannot teach you social mores. This novel put me in mind of a Greco-Roman tragedy. Family is everything, nothing. Modern times: self fights technology. There is crossover, there is confusion. The protagonist has an angel and a devil in his life. Both have aspects of the other entity. At first I was fighting through the crude ‘dudes’ and endless ‘cools’. I’m not sure at which point I realised this was a cunning book, that Shukla was dealing us a deck of selves. Teaching his readers a few lessons in life, should they wish to seek them out and learn from them. The humor in the book is Shukla’s perverse perceptions of the behavior of others, added to the maleness of the plot, giving the slightly unwashed sense of a teenage bedroom. You can read his words and recognize all that is wrong in your own tech-obsessed life. Smirk at the similarities with his characters, or you can look behind to the complexities of human relationships that will always exist, be you Bacchus or Balasubramanyam.I enjoyed it. It was worthwhile to read something different.

The way these characters thought and spoke was so vapid and shallow. I couldn't even bare to read the whole thing and just skimmed the last third of the book. It tries to be commentary about social media, but only managed to caricature it. It's trying too hard to be cool like Fight Club and lacks sincerity.

I am working on doing some table vases and bouquets for a party in a few weeks and have been at a loss for what to do! But then I found this book. I love the number of photos and it helped me pick a perfect fit right now!I plant to tried out the Friendship First Bouquet, with both a vase and for my mom to carry around as the guest of honor for her birthday brunch I am planning. I know that without this book I would have either paid way too much to have someone else make something of this quality, or I would have ended up with grocery store flowers instead! Either way, not even half as great compared to what I can make thanks to this book!I have since let a few friends also know about the book for inspiration and I am sure that my friend who is a wedding planning will be going to this book a lot for help! The photos make it the perfect thing for someone who needs to get the right fit for an event in a hurry, and also for people who work best when they can see everything in front of them. It was amazing, and since reading it I have sat down a few times to flip through the pages when I am feeling bored or need a pop of color in my life! :)

Great guide to creating bridal bouquets By Lilah Morgan Fantastic book for a bride who is looking to DIY her flowers or anyone who wants to throw a party with great decorations. We're on a budget for our wedding, but I've never done any flower arranging in my life beyond popping a grocery store bouquet into a vase, so I was definitely a bit intimidated by trying to arrange my own flowers. This book had helpful full page color photos and step by step instructions on how to create a huge variety of beautiful bouquets and arrangements. There was even a section with info on how to care for the flowers to ensure that they don't wilt that was super helpful. Highly recommend this guide to anyone!

From Anita Hughes, author of Monarch Beach, comes Market Street, a delicious story of a department store heiress, her messy marriage, and her passion for food.

Cassie Blake seems to lead a charmed life as the heiress to Fenton's, San Francisco's most exclusive department store. But when she discovers her husband Aidan, a handsome UC Berkeley professor, has had an affair with a student, she flees to the comfort of her best friend Alexis' Presidio Heights mansion, where she wonders if she should give their marriage one more chance.

Whether or not she can forgive Aidan is not the only choice Cassie has to make. Cassie's mother is eager to have her oversee the opening of Fenton's new Food Emporium, which Fenton's hopes will become San Francisco's hottest gourmet shopping destination. Cassie's true passion has always been food, not fashion, and Cassie suspects her mother might be trying to lure her into the Fenton's fold by entrusting her with such an exciting opportunity. And then there is James, the architect designing the Emporium, who is quietly falling in love with her...

By Chick Lit Goddess **WARNING: THE FOLLOWING REVIEW HAS SPOILERS**Still reeling with joy after reading "Monarch Beach" by Anita Hughes, her debut novel, I was asked to read and review "Market Street." As a huge fan of the author I accepted the offer and was given an early NetGalley copy."Market Street" began as an easy read, with action starting right away. I wanted to know if Cassie would take the job at the emporium, but found myself more curious if she would take her cheating husband. The way he cheated, their relationship and the way he seemed to act as is he hadn't done anything wrong, piqued my interest. While there was a bit of name and brand dropping, I understood it because that's what defined the characters were and what I expected from the book. Up until the end of the first quarter, my attention was held.I liked how Cassie's friend, Alexis, allow her to stay with her, but it seemed like she overstayed her welcome, and not just because Alexis's husband was away on business, (and I often wondered if he was cheating like Aidan). Cassie is a thirty-two year old woman, but staying with her friend for as long as she did kind of threw me off. I also didn't understand their dialogue. One would say something, then the other would say something completely random, but maybe that was the way the characters have always talked with each other. In the end, I felt that Alexis took over the part of the main character. I also found it odd that she's the one who took it upon herself to shut the chapter on Cassie and Aidan's marriage by sending him a box of lingerie.I tried to like Cassie's character -- I really did, but there were times that I was so over her. She seemed to run away from her issues, especially her husband's infidelity and not face the issues. I wanted her to make up her mind, was she in the marriage or was she out of it? At times I felt sorry for Aidan (the cheater) because Cassie seemed to care too much about her emporium (which I'm glad she took a stand and did for herself) and what her mother thinks to work on and fight for her marriage. Often, Cassie was daydreaming about wanting to be watching a movie or wrapped up in Aidan's arms in their bed, which annoyed me because if she really wanted to, she could. As for Aidan, I didn't like him. He was very arrogant, but maybe he was supposed to be that way.At the end I though, I liked how Cassie appeared to be more grown-up and adjusts her priorities, making her relationship with James at the top of the list. I just wonder why she didn't do this with her marriage, and it would have been nice to for the reader to "see" some kind of closure between Cassie and Aidan. While I anticipated "Market Street" to be another brilliant read by Anita Hughes, I thought it was only okay. I found there to be a little too much name dropping of designers that I just didn't care about, which seemed like page fillers. And while I have stayed at The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach (which is mentioned) and understand high-class society, I didn't care about what Cassie, Alexis, Aidan or James wore. What interested me more was the story, not what they were modeling.I recommend "Market Street" to anyone who is into fashion or a fan of Anita Hughes because she's a brilliant writer who creates memorable and delightful stories, but this book just wasn't on that resonated with me.I give this book 3 stars!

Fluff, but a nice escape reading By Teresa Wagner A book of unrealistic fluff: everyone's a millionaire--the women without working for it (except the mother of the book's central character who created a highly successful department store and is stereotyped as cold and uncaring as if that is part of being a successful, hard working woman); the women are pencil thin but constantly eat ice cream, pie, milkshakes and french fries as often as thin women drink water; and the 30 something women who finally do go to work only do so whenever they feel like it--if they are heartsick, tired, want to go shopping or feel like staying in bed with a man they just don't go to work that day (which seems to be about half the time). The worst part of the book is that the central character never develops a backbone or an identity of her own. She never seemed offended at all by the grossly sexist lines from her husband--she was only offended by learning he slept with other women. Being told she was expected to be his helpmate and nothing else didn't seem to even register with her as condescending or ludicrous. The best part of the book is the focus on organic food and the delights of San Francisco. For silly fluff/science fiction escape reading it's worth a 3.

Claypole White MARKET STREET has all the ingredients of page-turning escapism: likeable characters--except for the dirtbag husband, a glimpse of high society life in San Francisco, and steamy sex. Add in mouth-watering descriptions of gourmet food and more designer fashion than a girl can dream of...and why would you put this book down to return to real life? The themes of the novel drew me in straight away: self-discovery in the midst of betrayal and the importance of female friendships. The writing is warm and cozy, and the female characters are wonderful. My favorite part of the novel was the friendship between the heroine and her BFF. I loved that Alexis opened her home--and her wardrobe--to Cassie without once judging her or dishing out harsh marriage advice. Everyone needs a friend like Alexis. If you're looking for the perfect weekend read, this is it.

The extraordinary tearjerker about best friends. What happens when everything you thought was true changes all at once? What happens when each relationship that means anything to you suddenly becomes far more real than you ever thought it would be? What happens when every moment becomes invaluable as all of them pass far too quickly? FLASH AND DAZZLE is the story of two friends who have known the best of times who develop a true taste for life during the worst of times. It is the story of the friends and lovers who enter their orbit, some for a long time and some only for a moment. It is the story of legacies, burdens, and the kinds of secrets that are only revealed when there’s nothing left to tell. It is a funny, moving, deeply honest novel that will inspire you to call everyone you care about and thank everyone you know for what they’ve given you. “Lou Aronica is a master storyteller and reaches right in and touches one’s heart with the humanness of his characters. By My Dog-Eared Purpose This book was provided to me free by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.Finish time: 3 nights.I really enjoyed this author’s writing style. If I wrote a book, I would imagine it would be similar to this style (although that will never happen as I lack the creative juices to do so.) I’m not sure if this fits into the genre of “chick-lit”, but I’m considering passing it along to my husband to fact-check as I was surprised by the amount of detail it went into marketing/advertising agencies (as this is how he began his career!). Not bad, but just put me off at first and I had to look back at the description because that didn’t sound like a book I would choose. But it built up the story and the history and current positions of the characters. And from what my husband has told me, it actually appears to be pretty accurate! Which is a good thing as I’ve been frustrated in books before about the lack of research on simple subjects! The story follows Rich and Eric, who early in their advertising career were dubbed “Flash & Dazzle.” The book explores the highs and lows of their friendship and careers (as they happen to be business partners too.) And then the ultimate low for one of the friends. On a side note – it also made my mouth water with the vivid descriptions of their meals each night from various Manhattan restaurants!I love this excerpt from the description:What happens when everything you thought was true changes all at once? What happens when each relationship that means anything to you suddenly becomes far more real than you ever thought it would be? What happens when every moment becomes invaluable as all of them pass far too quickly? An unlikely story, of two guys nonetheless, to really warm your heart, maybe hold some people a little closer, and live each moment to the fullest. Check it out – you’ll be glad you did!

I liked that you sort of know the ending from the start. I think I would have given it four chairs had it grabbed me from the beginning. It was great to read about men's friendships that are so different, yet so similar to female relationships. The characters were well developed and I did care about them.Overall, I did enjoy this book.More reviews at Ope's Opinions.com

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Friendship Like No Other! By Viviane Crystal Flash and Dazzle are two guys lucky enough to find each other not only as great colleagues but who also become best friends or soul mates who supposedly know each other’s thoughts before they are thought and who bring out the best in each other. Their friendship is uniquely remarkable, but their future is about to become even more so in the most unexpected way possible. Flash is a copywriter and Dazzle is an art director in a small but well-known ad agency. Reading about how they bounce ideas off each other until they come up with brilliant ad campaigns is fascinating stuff and even humorous because of their antics and light style with it all. They are no lightweights in the industry, however; and Flash is very, very surprised when another opportunity arises for him to work elsewhere, without Daz, his best buddy.Flash will be wined and dined, interviewed, cosseted with a perky weekend trip set to woo him but with one unexpected caveat that stuns him. That won’t be the ultimate stunner, however, as he doesn’t realize that the recent brief illnesses of Daz are much more serious, in fact devastating. It’s after discovering Daz’s problem that the real sharing about life and life’s changes suddenly become devastatingly real and poignant beyond words. In the process he meets Daz’s sister and the three discuss numerous serious and hilarious memories that forged their personalities into the capable and admirable people they have become.Secrets and fantasies fill the mix as the three friends work their way through exotic meals, movies and music while awaiting the ultimate challenge of change. There are potent moments that are depicted in a very real way without being maudlin or exaggerated. A deep respect for the vivaciousness of life fills every page and the prospect of change heightens each moment’s precious value.Flash and Dazzle, like so many of Lou Aronica’s other novels, is a dynamic contemporary novel that readers will for sure find fully engaging and worthwhile reading. Lou Aronica is a talented writer who uses subtlety rather than explicit description to depict the normalcy, quirkiness and fluctuations of honest characters. Terrific writing and reading!
