—and thou shalt call his name Jesus; for he shall save his people from their sins.—Matthew i. 21. I would help some to understand what Jesus came from the home of our Father to be to us and do for us. Everything in the world is more or less misunderstood at first: we have to learn what it is, and come at length to see that it must be so, that it could not be otherwise. Then we know it; and we never know a thing really until we know it thus.

The Hope of the Gospel, by George MacDonald

About the Author GEORGE MACDONALD (1824-1905), forerunner of the Inklings--Scottish minister, poet, novelist, and imaginative seer--was one of the most beloved Victorian authors throughout Great Britain and the U.S. in the 19th century. He wrote some 50 volumes of novels, poetry, short stories, fantasy, sermons, and essays. His influential body of work placed him alongside his eras great men of letters and his following was vast. Two decades after his death, his books were pivotal in leading C.S. Lewis to Christianity. He thus became the foundational member of Wheaton's Wade Center Seven. After his death, most of MacDonald's books eventually went out of print as his name drifted from memory. However, he continued to be revered by an impressive gallery of well-known figures, including G.K. Chesterton (who referred to him as one of the three or four greatest men of the 19th century ), W.H. Auden (calling MacDonald one of the most remarkable writers of the 19th century), and Oswald Chambers ( ... how I love that man! ). In spite of such a following, however, MacDonald's reputation gradually declined throughout the 20th century. MacDonald's most notable champion of the last century was C.S. Lewis, whose journey from atheism to Christianity was sparked by George MacDonald's prophetic view of God. Lewis persistently acknowledged his debt to MacDonald, whom he called his master. Lewis wrote: "I dare not say that he is never in error; but ... I know hardly any other writer who seems to be closer ... to the Spirit of Christ Himself.... I have never concealed the fact that I regarded him as my master, indeed I fancy I have never written a book in which I did not quote from him." Both in his autobiography and throughout his writing career, Lewis emphasized that George MacDonald was the most significant impetus in his own spiritual pilgrimage. MacDonald's writings can thus be seen as the spiritual soil out of which the faith of C.S. Lewis emerged. MacDonald's novels, fantasies, and fairy tales provide the imaginative foundation for Lewis's later writings, including the Chronicles of Narnia. In spite of his own popularity, however, the spiritual roots of Lewis' s faith remain largely unknown. Lewis's words of 65 years ago are still true today. It has not seemed to me that those who have received my books kindly take ... sufficient notice of the affiliation [with George MacDonald]. Notwithstanding Lewis' s frequent emphasis on the Scotsman's influence in his own life, MacDonald's name in the late 20th century drifted into obscurity and his books became unavailable. A resurgence of interest in the forgotten Victorian began to mount in the 1970s and 1980s, given initial impetus by Wheaton's Wade Center and the work of two Wheaton professors, Dr. Clyde Kilby, founder of the Center, and Dr. Rolland Hein, who released several editions of MacDonald's sermon extracts. MacDonald's name then exploded into public view in the years following, largely from the efforts of MacDonald redactor and biographer Michael Phillips. Building upon the efforts of Kilby, Hein, and others, and inspired by them, Phillips's work resulted in a new generation of readers discovering anew the treasures in MacDonald's stories, and led to a renewed publication of MacDonald's books on an unprecedented scale not seen since his own lifetime. Now more than ever, thousands the world over are discovering why Madeleine L. Engle called George MacDonald the grandfather of all of us who struggle to come to terms with truth through imagination.

Excellent finale and introduction to MacDonald's sermons By Jason Pratt The Johannensen editions of these books _are_ gorgeously solid without being flashy or pretentious, btw. I highly recommend buying from them.MacDonald wrote five volumes of 'Unspoken Sermons' (the title of the first three volumes); each a cycle of 12 sermons leading into each other (he always ends one sermon with the verse upon which the next is based). This duplex includes _Hope of the Gospel_ and _Miracles of Our Lord_, both of which are in essence extensions of the Unspoken series.MoOL (which doesn't feature the usual crossover between chapter/sermons, btw) makes an especially good reference for fans and students (like myself) of C.S. Lewis' _Miracles: A Preliminary Study_, as Lewis definitely drew on this book for the form and presentation of his chapters of philosophical analysis of the miracles wrought by Jesus. (In fact, all the Unspokens give excellent insight into Lewis' theological backgrounding.) MacDonald presents a penetrating theological and devotional presentation of the Lord's works, emphasizing the call to faith in Jesus personally inherent in each one. The book can be read as an auxiliary to the other Unspokens, or as an introduction to the series as a whole.HotG works best, in my opinion, as a summary of positions developed in the three main Unspoken volumes (although all the sermons are also quite original); consequently I always read it last. {g} The first few sermons trace Jesus' early life and ministry, giving fascinating insights on His Jerusalem Temple adventure and His baptism,as well as on the meaning inherent in His given name. From these points, MacDonald structures the remaining chapters around the Beatitudes, presenting them as the clearest way to understand the gospel given by God through (and as) Jesus.Scholarly standards are quite high in MacDonald's work, although this shouldn't scare off potential readers: he constantly brings us back to practical applications of all the principles discussed. If I had to recommend any single series of books (outside the Scriptures themselves) that every Christian should read (and while quite conservative the books will be theologically challenging to Christians all across the spectrum), the Unspoken Sermons, including these two extensions, would definitely be the one.

By A Customer In the essay "Sorrow--The Pledge of Joy", George MacDonald wrote: "Out upon such miserable theologians as . . . so cut and pare the words of the Lord as to take the very life from them, quenching all their glory and colour". You won't find these words in the edited version of this essay in _Life Essential_; in my opinion, Hein has so cut and pared the words of MacDonald as to take the very life from them, quenching not all, but much, of their glory and color. In the introduction, Hein warns us that the editing has taken place, resulting in about half of MacDonald's words being discarded. The ostensible reason is that MacDonald tended to use florid language that is awkward to the modern ear, and that he tended to repeat himself. Search the Internet for MacDonald's original texts and compare them to Hein's editions and see if you don't agree with me that the language Hein cut was often glorious. And when you examine the deletions it will be obvious that elimination of repetition can't explain all of them. On the contrary, the deleted passages often make points not made by the surviving text, points that perhaps made Hein uncomfortable (like, in "Sorrow--The Pledge of Joy", the eternal nature of human relationships: "A heaven without human love it were inhuman, and yet more undivine to desire; it ought not to be desired by any being made in the image of God.")Do yourself a favor and buy the lovely Johannesen editions of MacDonald's original works instead.

At first I thought it was "works oriented," but then I started realizing that, as they say in AA, nothing changes if nothing changes. Obedience can be as simple as praying when you are blessed with the impulse.

What's the sound of a stock market—and a novelist—crashing?

The Roaring Twenties were bellowing along—until they weren’t. In a splintered bar in Boston, Pinky deVroom, newspaperman, amateur cynic and would-be-novelist, clutches his sour Prohibition brandy and watches his world as it's sucked down into the vortex. Hope comes in the form of a comely literary agent named Elfred. But hope can be its own form of hell. Watch game Pinky twist, squirm and waffle while the world wobbles. Literature has never had a hero named Pinky—but despite literature’s measured qualms, this is its greatest chance.

Swirled All the Way to the Shrub, by Tom Bentley, Rick Wilson

From the Author Shrub is the result of a fascinating collaboration between me and Rick Wilson, a friend, writer (and dentist who needs to look at my teeth soon). The title came to Rick from an email from a friend--and that friend was innocent of any thought that this wayward phrase would become the basis for a long short story. And for a novel to come.Rick supplied the protagonist's name, Pinky DeVroom, and vroom, off we went, writing alternate chapters. In Rick's words, "The story starts at that precise moment when the Roaring Twenties was crushed down into the Whimpering Twenties by The Crash, the biggest single economic tragedy in American history. And this ignoble setting allowed us to take a flawed but generally likable fellow who was just on the cusp of fantastic success after years of noble effort and crush him down right along with the Market. Then we get to see if he ever bounces back again."I'd never worked with another writer on a fiction project, and I foresaw many tangles of style, work habits, point of view and what might be for lunch, but my foreseeing was flat bunk: it was good fun (and good writing) to write together, and Pinky is proof. We're going to continue mangling Pinky's mind for the foreseeable future--he's bent, but not broken, and the Crash will reverberate in his life for time to come. Can't wait to see how it all turns out.

By Joel D Canfield Bentley and Wilson are wordsmiths, appreciators of the unusual. The story, about a chap knocked down, struggling to get up again in life, finding help from a surprising quarter: yes, the story is good. Fun. Smart. Fulfilling. But unlike some short stories which are only stories, Pink and his time at The Shrub are worth rereading for the feel of the words on the tongue. Delightful and engaging, and a likely template for my own short stories when I get around to writing them.(Both authors are friends of mine, but if the book wasn't wonderful I wouldn't be here telling you about it.)

Quilt thrifting is a method of reusing materials to make a new quilt. We reuse old fabrics and remake them into new items. We recycle those that still have a useful life into new items that we can use and then pass on to future generations. The purposes of this book on quilt thrifting are three fold: • To promote recycling among quilters • To make quilting more affordable for the cost conscious quilter • To promote creativity in the up-cycling of fabrics

I grew up buried under homemade quilts in winter. Each one was a collection of cotton house dresses, cut to pieces after being worn for many years. When I started quilting, I fell down the rabbit hole of quilt store runs and collecting fabrics just like most. Now, with a return of lifestyle to reuse and make do, I'm revisiting my quilt making process. Nothing goes to waste, not a scrap. I too shop thrift stores for fabric, especially for king size 100% cotton flannel sheets for backs. I see my vintage quilts as true art. Thanks to the author of this book, for her research and dedication to environmental protection in the area of quilting.

I've paid $5 for a wedding dress, or bought a brown grocery bag packed full of men's shirts, jeans, and women's blouses for $6. Doing that has given me wonderful trim, buttons and fabric to play with. But I no longer buy used clothing, fabric or linens. I re-use my own things and no one else's for the following reasons:I have worked in and volunteered at thrift shops and what is donated is sometimes disgusting. No thrift shop can afford to launder clothing before it is put out for sale. People donate dirty underwear, clothing that is muddy, grass stained or been in storage for so long that it's buggy. It arrives smelling like smoke, covered in dog or cat hair and sometimes smelling like pee. One thrift shop uses a roll of masking tape to remove the hair and airs out items before putting it on the sales floor. Yuck! There is a rodent problem at one store, and the rats and mice chew through the boxes and bags to nest. So, wonderful clothing is contaminated because donations pile up and can't be sorted in a timely fashion. Months go by before the pile is reduced. New bags get tossed on top of the old, and sorters take from the top. See the problem? Now we're hearing about super lice that are resistant to time honored remedies. Everything a lice infected person touches has to be laundered in hot water. Bedbugs, flea eggs, other nasty stuff......not worth dealing with to save a few bucks on fabric.Well known fabric and craft stores have sales and coupons regularly. End of season sales offer treasures at a greatly reduced price. I buy new exclusively now and still wash everything the minute I get home because you never know who bought it and then returned it, used the bathroom and didn't wash their hands and then tried it on or tried on the jeans without undies (going commando ). Also, chemicals like formaldehyde used in the production of clothing and fabric need to be removed by laundering before use. There are news articles about this. One doctor stated that he washes new clothes twice with a double rinse. He said it is not a good idea to wear new clothing right out of the package. Here's the link to the article.http://www.wsj.com/articles/do-you-need-to-wash-new-clothes-before-wearing-them-1431955513

Good for cheapskates like me By Lauren C In all fairness, I should start off with the disclaimer that the author is one of my cousins and I do believe I got my crafting tendencies from that side of the family. I purchased the book when it was offered for free soon after publication. At 62 pages, I was able to read this book in two sittings. The title is a bit misleading, because the book is really more about where to find fabric to recycle and ideas for what to do with that fabric. It mentions quilting, but most of the projects mentioned use other methods. This book is not about crafting techniques; it is about finding and using fabrics found in thrift stores or reused from your own stash. I'm all about reusing and recycling (and being a cheapskate) and learned some new things from reading this book. For instance, it discusses lap blankets for Alzheimer's patients, and I have been wanting to make something like this for a while and wasn't sure how to go about it - now I have a plan! One drawback of this Kindle book is that I read it on my phone, which did not do the photos justice.

A Classic Mystery Collection Missing from the US By Tommy OG It is quite surprising that Arsene Lupin is not largely available in the US... considering quite a lot of French literature had been translated into English... And you are missing out if you do not start reading Lupin!Anyhow... I think it is fair to compare Arsene Lupin to Sherlock Holmes... However, Arsene Lupin has a much more dynamic personality and an attractive persona that greatly enhance his image as a smart yet eccentrically likable "gentleman burglar." Yes, he still employs logic and daring assumptions to solve all the mysteries, but he does it with style (or poshness). The translation for this series is quite good. The language itself does not seem like it has been abridged in anyway. You will be amazed by how much you will love the story! This particular adventure of Arsene Lupin's consists of eight mystery cases which are cleverly interconnected to each other as Arsene solves them one by one, with his love interest as his companion on the side (and she even becomes the target of a crime in one case). All the cases present very different scenarios and require Lupin's clever solutions to unlock the truth to the mysteries.Simply a page turner.

Eight strokes of genius By Riccardo Pelizzo Though Lupin begins his career as a thief (a gentleman thief) and not as vicious, violent criminal as Fantomas, at some point in his literary life he becomes a force for good, and provides police with valuable help to solve crimes and mysteries. The reader will remember that after the death of Lupin's girlfriend in the Hollow Needle, Lupin disappears and we learn from 813 that in those three years in which he had been invisible he was actually working in the police force. Finally uncovered, Lupin provided the police with valuable help to solve the crimes/mysteries narrated in 813, then Lupin disappears, joins the Foreign Legion, returns to France in the teeth of the tiger and once again helps the police to solve a long chain of murders and other assorted crimes.Nowhere, Lupin's detective talents are as visible as in the 8 strokes of the clock--which Ellery Queen regarded as one of the 125 most important collections of short detective stories. In this book, after coming to the rescue of young lady, he invites her to follow him in his adventures. Some inventions and solutions provided by Leblanc are absolutely pure genius and it is a pity that half of the Lupin catalogue (including the countess of cagliostro and so on) are not available in English translation. But English-speaking Lupin-readers will be satisfied by these stories.

Mysterious Differences between the French and English Versions By AYJ This is one of Maurice Leblanc’s series of light-hearted detective novels featuring an avatar of Arsene Lupin, “the French Sherlock Holmes”. “Les Huit Coups de l’Horloge” had rested on my night stand for months. I intended to read this classic in French to bolster my faltering fluency, but though I started several times, I was uncertain whether I was really “getting it”, and since it was a detective story, I was afraid I was missing clues. Then I hit on a happy solution: I found an English language version of the same book published by the Wildside Press, and alternated reading the French version and the English version, chapter by chapter. To my delight, I found that my French was better than I had feared; I was in fact, getting the gist of the story. To my perplexity, I found that this English language version often differed from the French, for reasons which were sometimes hard to discern. In one instance English prudery has something to do with it. The leading lady, Hortense Daniel, is married to a lunatic confined to a mental hospital. The mysterious Prince Renine (Arsene Lupin incognito) challenges her to accompany him on eight adventures, promising to cure her boredom. If he succeeds in all eight, including the return of a brooch Hortense lost years ago, it is implied that she will enter into a sexual liaison with him. In the French version, this is an accepted happy ending. In the English version, the husband conveniently dies half-way through the book, so that there is at least a possibility of a legally sanctioned relationship. In other cases the changes seem arbitrary. In “Le Cas de Jean Louis”, Renine saves a young woman who has tried to kill herself by jumping into the Seine, distraught because her fiancé, Jean Louis, has broken their engagement. Her father begs Renine to help her find the fiancé so that she will not attempt suicide again.. In “The Case of Jean Louis” the young woman is not suicidal, but very unhappy because her lover has disappeared and her father is forcing her to marry a man she hates unless he reappears. Renine gets involved because the young lady is a good friend of Hortense. Why the change? Why make the father into a villain? The girl is quite vapid, so we think less of Hortense for having made her a friend. The Wildside Press version published in 2003 gives no name to the translator, so there is no way to inquire why certain characters are omitted, chapters are arranged in a different order, and different reasons are given for events. It’s a mystery.

This coloring book is sixty-four pages, with plenty to color! It's exactly as it sounds, a vampire combat field guide. The illustrations are bold and imaginative, and Roger Ma really takes the reader/color-er through a story of sorts. He takes us through vampire anatomy to types of vampires to weapons to attacking methods. Very cool! Definitely a great adult coloring book right in time for Halloween! On my blog, see photos of what I colored! http://eaterofbooks.blogspot.com/2015/10/review-vampire-combat-field-guide-by.html

This was a fun activity book and I enjoyed channeling my inner child while reading and coloring. The book contains all sorts of tips and tricks for combating vampires. Vampires are my favorite paranormal creature so I loved that they were the focus of this book. I would definitely recommend this to people looking for a fun way to pass some time and relax. The book is an extremely easy read and is great for relaxing and de-stressing. Below are some of the pages from the book. My personal favorite was the Seducers identification page. It made me think of so many of my favorite vampire heroes.

What do you do when your girlfriend's younger brother is the best-looking person on the planet and has a thing for you but he's only sixteen? Parish doesn't know what he's going to do, but he is about to find out. Luke Hartwell, author of Atom Heart John Beloved and other works of fiction, puts together yet another short story that is both charming and sexy. As usual, the narrative voice is winsome, and the story conveys a surprising amount of depth.

Nothing Strikes Back!, by Luke Hartwell

Review Like Hartwell's previous work, "Nothing Strikes Back" is both sexy and charming but also at times blunt and thought-provoking. We like that in literature and are beginning to think no one today is doing it quite as well as Hartwell. When a book makes us smile at times, makes us almost cry at others, but also causes us to contemplate the nature of love and our society's laws forbidding it, we know the author is doing something right. This short but sweet story is another important work from an important writer.

From the Author I grew up in places much like the fictional town of Weston in my novel Atom Heart John Beloved. I always enjoyed reading books with the gay boy attracted to straight boy dynamic, and several of my stories deal with just that.

Parish, the narrator, has a rather dry sense of humor and a fatalistic attitude toward his relationships with girls. One of those girls has a younger brother Parish finds intriguing, and vice versa. The dance they do around each other throughout the story keeps one waiting and wondering. I might have enjoyed a slightly different ending, but the one it has is likely for the best. All in all, it's fine, enjoyable story.

He has a way of storytelling that makes you feel like you are there experiencing it with the characters. His plots usually involve a gay person and a "straight" person who find out they have more in common than they first believed. This story is no exception and gives great insight into two young mens' thoughts about themselves and how they resolve the situation between them.

By LenaRibka It is probably the sweetest and the most NORMAL novel with the most LIKEABLE characters that Luke Hartwell has ever written. And it was my last in my to-read list of this author. And I'm sobered and inexpressibly saddened.

With its hilariously honest look at the single male in America - from his apartment furnishings to his career struggles to his dating habits - Bruce Jay Friedman's book The Lonely Guy's Book of Life quickly became a hit when it first appeared in 1978, winning raves from critics and inspiring Steve Martin's classic cult comedy The Lonely Guy. Twenty years later,Friedman returned to the subject with The Slightly Older Guy, finding his quarry no longer alone and not so young anymore but just as funny. Now these classic humor books are available together for the first time.

With a new afterword about "The Considerably Older Guy", this edition deals with such topics as divorce and grandchildren. Offering advice on exercise (walk, don't run) and insomnia (read Solzhenitsyn), Friedman took the pulse of the aging American male - and found him still in need of some good satire.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. From an old (formerly) Lonely Guy By J. A. Clark This is a simply wonderful book - and the Slightly Older Guy is too - wry, amusing and touching. I love the books of Bruce Jay Friedman (who must be an Older Guy by now) and am always telling people to read him. But, here's the catch, in the UK he's not published (or so I believe). How come? His books - going way back - are great and he is one of America's treasures. Perhaps someone can explain....

A freelance writer and journalist, Vicenta (“Vicky”) Lumière has moved beyond her upbringing in the diverse Irish Channel neighborhood of New Orleans. But a visit to her childhood friend Lonnie Cavanaugh in the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women brings back a flood of memories. In Navel of the Moon, the follow-up to her acclaimed debut The Fifth Sun, Mary Helen Lagasse turns to the 1950s and 60s, where a young Vicky learns that the complicated people that we become as adults and the complicated world that adults create are shaped by events in childhood. The adults around her, beginning with her Mexican grandmother, Mimy, the family storyteller—who says she is from the “navel of the moon”—often confound and sometimes trouble Vicky. Yet Vicky’s strength of character is profoundly affected by the complexity of life, and in particular that of her troubled childhood friend Lonnie and of Valentina Dreyfus, the Holocaust survivor who becomes Vicky's closest confidante.

Navel of the Moon: A Novel, by Mary Helen Lagasse

Review “In her new novel, Navel of the Moon, Mary Helen Lagasse has created a wonderfully engaging and complex young woman who tells a compelling story of the promise and pain and shared courage of growing up, not just for herself but for her city of New Orleans.  This splendid work gives further evidence of Lagasse’s permanent place in our literary culture..”--Robert Olen Butler, author of the Pulitzer Prize winner A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain“In this coming of age love song to New Orleans, a wise child’s intimate voice and sharp eye take the reader back to life in one of the city’s great neighborhoods: the Irish Channel. There the voices and languages are mixtures of many ethnicities living in small apartments, shotgun houses, or housing projects: families on the edge of poverty. A remarkably intelligent girl, Vicenta Maria de los Angeles Lumière—Vicky grows to encounter history, tragedy, personal loss, and the many faces of love.”--Lee Meitzen Grue, editor of The New Laurel Review “In Navel of the Moon, Mary Helen Lagasse triumphantly surpasses the amazing promise of her debut, The Fifth Sun. This earthy and moving tale is set in 1960s New Orleans but resides, as all good literature does, deep within the passionate mysteries of the human heart. Vicky, the young protagonist, guides the reader on an extraordinary trip into the world of the diverse people of the Irish Channel, from her Mexican grandmother, Mimy, to her rebellious best friend, Lonnie, to many others created by the skillful hand of Lagasse. In the grand tradition of the finest Southern writing, Navel of the Moon is filled with luminous characters, crisp, lyrical prose, and powerful human drama.”--Manuel Ramos, author of The Skull of Pancho Villa and Other Stories

Whelan More wondrous writers continue to come from Louisiana and Mary Helen Lagasse is one of them. Her second novel "Navel of the Moon" adds new depth to so-called “coming of age” stories. Set in the New Orleans Irish Channel area, young Vicky Lumiere becomes reluctantly occupied with family quarrels while she valiantly attempts to calm muddy waters for several notable but often troublesome friends. During the midst of Vicky’s rapid journey to adulthood, her Holocaust survivor friend Valentina tells her “Sometimes one must accept that there are problems for which there are no immediate or even satisfactory solutions.” It's a hard lesson for anybody to accept at any age. Through an intriguing maze of events, Vicky learns more about modern-day perseverance and her character nurtured by the timeless values of her ancestors. "Navel of the Moon" is an exquisite yarn motivated by huge empathy for humanity and copious devotion to an astute reader’s just demand for poetic detail.

Most of the action in her new novel takes place in the Irish Channel, and reading it made me feel as if I was dwelling there. Vicky, the narrator and central person in this novel, is ably dealing with a lot of people from all walks of life and making her way well through it. Connie, of course, sticks out like a sore thumb because of her attitude.

A rich cast of characters, including those coming of age in the old diversified New Orleans neighborhood of the Iris Channel. I cannot wait to read what Mary Helen Lagasse will develop for her next publication!!!

I definitely recommend this to everyone who (like me) does not have enough money for other things like let others renovate my room. I learned here some tips and tricks on how to do or what to buy for what I wanted inside my room. This book has explained everything that I needed to know and I think I can really do those things on my own.

The Heroic Slave, a heartwarming Narrative of the Adventures of Madison Washington, in Pursuit of Liberty is a short piece of fiction written by notable abolitionist Frederick Douglass, a fugitive slave based in Boston. When the Rochester Ladies' Anti Slavery Society asked Douglass for a short story to go in their collection, Autographs for Freedom, Douglass responded with The Heroic Slave. The novella, published in 1852 by John P. Jewett and Company, was Douglass' first and only published work of fiction (though he did publish several autobiographical narratives). The Heroic Slave is a fictional work inspired by Madison Washington, an enslaved cook on the brig Creole, who led a rebellion on the ship by 19 slaves in November 1841. They succeeded in taking control of the ship en route from Virginia to New Orleans (in what was known as the coastwise slave trade), and ordered it sailed to Nassau in the Bahamas. A total of 128 slaves gained freedom there, as Britain had abolished slavery in 1839. It was the largest and most successful slave rebellion in United States history.

The Heroic Slave, by Frederick Douglass

About the Author Frederick Douglass (1818–1895) was an American social reformer, orator, writer and statesman. After escaping from slavery, he became a leader of the abolitionist movement, gaining renown for his dazzling oratory and incisive antislavery writing. He stood as a living counter-example to slaveholders' arguments that slaves did not have the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. He became a major speaker for the cause of abolition. In addition to his oratory, Douglass wrote several autobiographies, eloquently describing his life as a slave, and his struggles to be free. His classic autobiography, Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, is one of the best known accounts of American slavery. After the Civil War, Douglass remained very active in America's struggle to reach its potential as a "land of the free". Douglass actively supported women's suffrage. Following the war, he worked on behalf of equal rights for freedmen, and held multiple public offices. Douglass was a firm believer in the equality of all people, whether black, female, Native American, or recent immigrant. He was fond of saying, "I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong."

Frederick Douglass' Novel By Robin Friedman Although he is best-known for his autobiographies, the great abolitionist and African American leader Frederick Douglass (1818 - 1895) also wrote an important novel. I learned of it in reading about Douglass. I was pleased to have the opportunity to find the book and to discuss it here. Douglass's novel, in fact an extended short story, is available in this new, inexpensive edition as well as in anthologies of his writings.Written in 1853, "The Heroic Slave" is among the first works of fiction by an African American. It is based upon a historical incident: the slave mutiny in November,1841 on the American ship, Creole. The Creole had sailed from Richmond with a cargo of 134 slaves to be sold in New Orleans. A slave with the name of Madison Washington escaped his irons and, together with 18 other slaves, took over the ship and sailed it to the British port of Nassau in the Bahamas. The British refused to return the slaves to their owners, and they remained in Nassau as free people. The United States government did not object. Many Americans responded to the incident by debating whether the United States should have been more aggressive in approaching Britain. However, Madison Washington became a hero to many abolitionists, including Douglass. The Creole incident is similar to the better-known slave rebellion involving the Amstead.Douglass' equates the actions of Madison Washington in commandeering the Creole with the actions of his namesakes, (Madison and Washington) among others, in the Revolutionary War of 1776. Here is how he opens the novel:"The State of Virginia is famous in American annals for the multitudinous array of her statesmen and heroes. She has been dignified by some the mother of statesmen...... Yet not all the great ones of the Old Dominion have, by the fact of their birth-place escaped undeserved obscurity. By some strange neglect, one of the truest manliest, and bravest of her children .... hold now no higher place in the records of that grand old Commonwealth than is held by a horse or an ox. Let those account for it who can, but there stands the fact, that a man who loved liberty as well as did Patrick Henry, - who deserved it as much as Thomas Jefferson, - and who fought for it with a valor as high, an arm as strong, and against odds as great, as he who led all the armies of the American colonies through the great war for freedom and independence, lives now only in the chattel records of his native State."Douglass' short novel is in four parts, the last of which recounts the story of Madison Washington and the Creole. In the preceding three parts of the book, Douglass gives an imaginative portrayal of the earlier life of Madison Washington and his struggle for "freedom and independence". The earlier three parts tell of encounters over a space of years between Washington and a white northerner named Listwell. The first encounter was in 1835 when Listwell was traveling in Virginia and, on a Sunday, hears a lone bloodied slave praying and denouncing the inhumanity of his bondage. Listwell does not speak to the man but resolves instead to become an abolitionist and work towards the end of slavery. In 1840, Listwell and his wife, on their farm in Ohio are approached by a lone traveler who turns out to be Madison Washington. Listwell tells Washington of the earlier encounter in 1835. Washington explains his various attempts at escape and the five years he spent in a swamp before a fire destroyed this site of refuge and threatened him with capture. Listwell helps Washington secure passage on the Underground Railroad to Canada.Part 3 of the book occurs in 1841. Listwell is again in Virginia and staying at an inn. He observes a long coffle of slaves to be sold and sees Madison Washington among them. Listwell manages a few moments alone with Washington and learns that he was recaptured when he returned to Virginia in a failed attempt to rescue his wife. Listwell is able to smuggle three files to Washington, together with ten dollars, before, the group is put on board the Creole to be sold in New Orleans. The final part of the book is recounted in the words of the first mate of the Creole, who describes the manly courageous character of Marcus Washington. Washington spared his life, navigated the Creole through a treacherous storm and led the slaves to freedom.. The mate concludes that he will "never endanger my life again in a cause which my conscience does not approve. I dare say here what many men feel, but dare not speak, that this whole slave-trading business is a disgrace and scandal to Old Virginia." The mate also recounts the justification Madison Washington offered for his actions in terms that recall the Revolution:"God is my witness that LIBERTY, not malice, is the motive for this night's work. I have done no more to those dead men yonder, than they would have done to me in like circumstances. We have struck for our freedom, and if a true man's heart be in you, you win honor us for the deed. We have done that which you applaud your fathers for doing, and if we are murderers, so were they."This short, eloquent novel speaks of the value of independence, freedom, and courage. The novel has been compared to Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" which had appeared about a year earlier. The best parallel to the book, however, is Melville's masterful story of a slave mutiny, "Benito Cereno" Benito Cereno (Bedford College Editions) which appeared in 1855, two years after Douglass' book. Readers interested in American literature or in the African American experience will enjoy getting to know Douglass' "Heroic Slave".Robin Friedman

By Daycraze Frederick Douglass was one of the foremost leaders of the abolitionist movement, which fought to end slavery within the United States in the decades prior to the Civil War.A brilliant speaker, Douglass was asked by the American Anti-Slavery Society to engage in a tour of lectures, and so became recognized as one of America's first great black speakers. He won world fame when his autobiography was publicized in 1845. Two years later he bagan publishing an antislavery paper called the North Star.Douglass served as an adviser to President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War and fought for the adoption of constitutional amendments that guaranteed voting rights and other civil liberties for blacks. Douglass provided a powerful voice for human rights during this period of American history and is still revered today for his contributions against racial injustice.

I By Eddie Hutchinson Frederick Douglass's 1852 venture into fiction is a short tale of a slave, Madison Washington, and his attempts to escape enslavement and flee to Canada. Along the way, Madison meets Mr. Listwell, a white abolitionist, who befriends him and aids him in his escape. For fear of giving too much away - you'll have to read it for yourself - in the end, we hear of Madison landing on the shores of Nassau, Bahamas.Although it didn't reach the prominence in anti-slavery fiction as Uncle Tom's Cabin (Thrift Edition) of the same year, The Heroic Slave is substantial in the fact that it was written by distinguished abolitionist, Frederick Douglass.

The significance of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book to our musical canon is well known; the remarkable story of its copyist and compiler, Francis Tregian, less so. Born into Cornish Catholic nobility and plumb into the choppy waters of the Elizabethan Age, he must rely on his surpassing skill as a musician to survive. In this Prix des Libraires (Booksellers Prize) winning novel, Anne Cuneo deftly recreates the musician's journey across Renaissance Europe, which sees him befriending Shakespeare, swapping scores with William Byrd and Monteverdi, and playing in the court of Henri IV of France. The result is as gripping as it is authentic: an epic, transcontinental choreography in which Europe's monarchs tussle with pretenders to their thrones, and ordinary people steer between allegiances to God, nation, and family.

Tregian's Ground: The Life and Sometimes Secret Adventures of Francis Tregian, Gentleman and Musician, by Anne Cuneo

Review "Francis Tregian’s extraordinary journeys through war-torn Europe keep readers riveted to the page and on the edge of their seats." Jean-Marie Volet, World Literature Today"Anne Cuneo’s magnificent book offers a humanist investigation of the most discerning kind." Philippe-Jean Catinchi, Le Monde"His adventures transport us, with a jangle of spurs, from one conspiracy to another, from Shakespeare in his playhouse, to the battle camp of Henri IV. At the invitation of Tregian's novelist biographer, no reader could fail to be swept up in the excitement." Laurence Liban, L’Express“Tregian’s Ground certainly has many cinematic qualities – of the best kind . . . The vivid, free-flowing translation here is by Louise Rogers Lalaurie and Roland Glasser. This more than does justice to what is a marvelously rich and multi-layered piece of work . . . Serious students of either history or music are not going to be disappointed here.” Andrew Green, Classical Music Magazine"This novel is based on a historical figure and, as is the typical benchmark for works in the genre, Cuneo’s empathetic and informed immersion into Tregian’s world gives the novel its claim to prestige. Cuneo handles the historical detail with a deft touch — it is sufficient but not excessive — and intersperses it well with vivacious dialogue and an authoritative, carefully researched knowledge of old London." Ben Paynter, LA Review of Books“It's not always that a writer with an interesting life writes interesting fiction. In this case Anne and her equally talented translators have it sussed – this is totally engrossing . . . by the time we take our leave of Francis as he awaits my Lady Death we are breathless and amazed, not to mention chuffed, to have made his acquaintance.” Bookbag“Francis is a worthy main character and I wanted the best for him, even when I felt he made the wrong choices.” Anita Davison, Historical Novel Review“[A] big, fat, absorbing historical novel that is by turns swashbuckling and tender . . . that sweeps us along excitingly and paints a series of vivid pictures . . . strongly cinematic . . . The English translation of Tregian’s Ground does full justice to this long book with its finely calibrated tone and many historical, literary and musical allusions, and it reads beautifully throughout.” Jean Morris, Shiny New Books“an unparalleled contribution to the Bildungsroman genre” S.J.L.Constantine, Glasgow Review of Books

Wright I stumbled across this title quite by accident, as it was written and published in France and has just now been translated into English and released in the US by a small publisher with little publicity. This is unfortunate, as it turns out to be one of the finest Historical Novels I have ever read. It tells us the story of Francis Tregian who was an amateur musician and copyist during the Elizabethan period, and is thought by some to have been the compiler of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, one of the greatest collections of Renaissance keyboard music ever assembled. Putting aside the issue of whether or not he was the copyist of these scores, the life the author has imagined for him bursts from the page with extraordinary vibrancy, as we meet virtually every great composer of the period, along with William Shakespeare himself. Francis is from a prominent Catholic family at a time when Catholics and Protestants were plotting against each other, and he navigates these stormy waters with great integrity and grace. The final chapters of his life, as imagined by the author, actually brought tears to my eyes. I have not been so moved by a novel since I read Les Miserables nearly 50 years ago. (Note: It will be helpful to be familiar with the music of the period, so the author provides a discography. The tunes collected by Tregian were actually the popular music of the time, and are utterly charming).

I am finding it jarring and helpful at the same time as I am in the midst of writing an historical novel on this family from the perspective of Francis, the elder.
