Escaping a city and a man that have almost broken her, Justine is running for her life. She heads north, to the mountains and valleys of the Scottish Highlands, where she hopes to hide and survive.

Michael and Hannah are running too. Gathering together their two young sons and the tatters of their marriage, they have come to the remote village of Kilmacarra, a place of standing stones and threatened windfarms--a place where they hope to once again make a home.

In this ancient landscape, in a country balanced on the brink of change, Justine, Michael, and Hannah are brought together by a shocking accident that entangles them all in threads of guilt and love, duty and forgiveness. As the ground beneath their feet begins to yield up its secrets, and each must question where they truly belong, the darkness that Justine left behind seeks her out with perilous consequences for them all.

Rise, by Karen Campbell

Review

“[Campbell's] style is gritty, at times dysphoric, bristling with intense feelings kept under skillful control . . . [She] is a vivid, distinctive writer who creates characters and stories we really care about . . . Gratifyingly, Campbell avoids easy answers, showing us that the pieces of most unions, personal and political, rarely fit neatly together, that true feeling comes into them unexpectedly, beyond the parts of our lives we think we can control.” ―New York Times Book Review

“[An] impressive U.S. debut. Written in striking, often imaginative prose yet paced as immediately as a thriller, Campbell's novel hits the ground running . . . An engaging writer introduces herself with this fresh, intelligent entertainment, full of satisfying moving parts.” ―starred review, Kirkus Reviews

“This is a story of independence--one woman's struggle towards it set against a nationwide attempt to define it.” ―The Glasgow Herald

“Accomplished, original, moving . . . all around terrific . . . Campbell’s protagonists are sympathetic, distinctive, and believable and she writes with a strong sense of irony that lends dark humor to the story.” ―Publishing Trends

“Campbell beautifully manipulates both characters and colliding events . . . An emotional rollercoaster culminating in a life-and-death collision beside the soaring stones that guard Kilmacarra.” ―CurledUp.com

“I loved it. A great, original character and the plot fairly whizzes along.” ―Kate Atkinson on The Twilight Time

“The writing is bold, gritty and fearless.” ―The Sunday Times on This Is Where I Am

“[A] fine, accomplished novel . . . The characterisation . . . is impeccable . . . Even the descriptions of [Glasgow] are pitch perfect . . . When her debut The Twilight Time was published in 2008, [Campbell] was heralded as a major new talent with huge potential. What she has done in Shadowplay is prove that that assessment was absolutely on the money.” ―The Scotsman on Shadowplay

Page turner By Cathe Justine is running away from her abusive pimp and ends up in an obscure Scotland town where she becomes the only witness to a hit and run accident which puts a boy in the hospital, and ends up staying with the family of the boy.I was hooked on this book right from the first page and seriously could hardly put it down until I was done. Great writing, quirky, well-drawn characters, weird happenings, and plenty of suspense. Absolutely LOVED it! Can't wait to read other books by this author.

Rise By Valerie Penny I had had a notification from goodreads that Rise by Karen Campbell had been published, but it was my friend Dawn who lent me the book when I said that I had not read it. It had been book of the month at her book group. Now, to lay my cards on the table, I have read lnovel that Karen Campbell has published and enjoyed them. I rate her very highly as a person, a tutor and as an author. She was my writing tutuor when i attended an Arvon writing course in Inverness, Scotland a couple of years ago. With that in mind, you will not be surprised that I was excited to read Rise. The Scottish author, Karen Campbell, is a graduate of Glasgow University’s prestigious Creative Writing Masters. Her first novel, The Twilight Time, is amongst several of her works I have reviewed on bookreviewstoday.info. Karen is a former police officer who can legitimately claim to have worked the streets of Glasgow, and her debut novel, described as ‘gritty as hell, shot through with black humour’, weaves personal insights and experiences to take a look at life behind the uniform.Since completing her crime quarto, she has moved publishers and genre. Rise is quite a different kind of book. It begins with the protagonist, Justine on the run from her psychopathic pimp and lover, Charlie Boy, with a big chunk of his money stuffed down her pants. It is a cracking opener, packed with tension and evocative detail. Shortly after, Justine blunders into Kilmacarra in the North of Scotland and straight into the heart of domestic turmoil and political unrest.Karen is a talented writer with a gift for creating characters that are honest, flawed and likeable. Justine witnesses a hit and run and she is sucked into the troubled marriage of the Andersons, whose elder son is the victim. Justine is roped in to babysit the Anderson’s younger son, Ross, having passed herself off as a certified nanny. Their lives become tangled together in threads of guilt and love, with Scotland rushing towards a referendum and the community around them fracturing, each character must question where they truly belong and each must find a way to face their ghosts. However, despite the fact that Rise has so much that works in its favour it fails to really soar, especially after the glorious opening and engaging middle portions. Inexplicably running out of steam, it sputters weakly over the finish line. The plotlines are resolved with varying degrees of success but it is all rather disappointingly pat. I hate to say this about any work by Karen Campbell, but, if I had my time again, I would not read Rise. I give it three stars beacuse I cannot bear to give any novel by Karen Campbell any less.Valerie Penny

At Once, Complex, Thoughtful, and Thrilling By David Valentino Scottish author Karen Campbell has transformed what might have been a typical genre thriller into something truly special, deserving of a wider readership than it probably will receive. Her phrasing is such that each time you open it, you discover yourself transported to the Scottish Highlands northwest of Glasgow, deep into the lives of Justine Strang, the Anderson family, and the variously interesting locals of her Kilmacarra (around Kilmartin, which you might look up for visual reference, as geography plays a critical role in the novel).Justine flees her brutal, abusive pimp in Glasgow, stealing hundreds of pounds for good measure in the process. She plans to run as far north as possible, hoping to drop off the grid. She, however, detours into Kilmacarra, where she comes upon Michael Anderson seemingly injured in the graveyard of the local church. Injured he is; however, it appears, at first, his injury is more psychological than physical. After all, Michael, an ordained minister who works at it part-time while his new main occupation is full-time elected councillor, has a ghost who appears to him regularly, taunting him mercilessly, the crux and meaning which we only learn in its fulness at the end.In addition to Michael’s disturbed mental state, Justine soon learns that his marriage totters on rocky ground. All this, after she witnesses a boy hit by a caravan towing a little red car, something she keeps to herself for days out of fear reporting it will attract the attention of Charlie Boy, her pimp, who, indeed, searches for her furiously, with the intent of dealing her a most painful death. To further complicate matters, Michael takes her on as a live-in, to relieve his wife Hannah, who is a writer, whereupon Justine discovers the boy injured is Michael’s and Hannah’s older son, Euan.None of this would mean too much to Justine, except that she develops an attachment for the younger son, Ross, around four. Ross takes a liking to her, as well. Through this relationship, and the fact that Michael can only find solace from his ghostly troubles in the presence of Justine, her bonds to the family and the town of Kilmacarra grow to the point of preventing her running, even when the danger she fears materializes.Into this mix of familial troubles and bonding, Campbell blends in a fascinating history of the region, told in relation to a campaign to prevent a power company from erecting a windmill farm that spurs an archeological dig around the Druid-like stones spotting all over the area.Campbell deftly bridges the genre barrier in a novel that should appeal to a broad array of readers. A first-rate job on her part.

Follow the fortunes of Miss Elspeth Slowtree as she battles literary snobbery, her mother’s nerves and Cousin Horatio, all armed with a superior wit, excellent ukulele skills and generally being quite bright… you know… for a girl. Balls will be attended, cheeks will be pinched and manners will be minded, all with not one ankle in sight. Will the dashing Reginald Wrexham win our heroine's heart? Will her sister Cordelia Slowtree evade the gypsies? Will Lady Drusilla relax her face? Only time will tell. After huge global success with her award winning, criticially acclaimed theatrical; Promise and Promiscuity: A New Musical by Jane Austen and Penny Ashton, Ms Ashton has delicately wrestled her story into a novella for all to enjoy. It is a brand new tale that combines elements from Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Austen's own life and also numerous pop culture references to bring Regency England to life. Amongst the silliness are numerous direct Austen quotes to add her genuis to the piece. These are footnoted so fans can delight in spotting their favourite tracts and learning more about her. “The most unexpected second book by a writer of note to appear in years...an engrossing story of brotherly division.”—John Freeman, Boston GlobeThe much-anticipated debut novel from National Book Award “5 under 35” author Josh Weil, whom Colum McCann lauded as one of “the most gifted writers of his generation,” The Great Glass Sea is an epic tale of brotherly love, swathed in all the magic of Russian folklore and set against the backdrop of an all-too-real alternate present. This is an ambitious novel of love, loss, and light, and a spellbinding vision of an alternative Russia as stirring as it is profound.“Moving and sensitive…evokes the mythic feel of a contemporary classic. There's pathos and tension…breathtaking brilliance. Weil's greatest gift to the reader: a deep understanding of family, personal loss and the abiding love between siblings.”—Los Angeles Times

Review Winner of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, The Library of Virginia Literary Award for Fiction, and the GrubStreet National Book Prize Shortlisted for the Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel PrizeA New York Times Editor’s ChoiceA featured LA Times "Summer Book", A Bustle “Best Book for July”, One of Flavorwire’s "10 Must Read Books for July"“[A] fascinating debut novel… The Great Glass Sea is not an alternative history, …but a fantastical vision inspired by bits and pieces of Russian language history, and culture. It is beautifully baffled by the mysterious Russian soul.”—New York Times Book Review"Josh Weil’s The Great Glass Sea is the most unexpected second book by a writer of note to appear in years….A grand fable…an absorbing and touching tale...Few young writers appreciate landscape, the way it shapes and diminishes people who live off it, quite like Weil...an engrossing story of brotherly division."—John Freeman,Boston Globe"With his brilliant new novel, The Great Glass Sea, Weil maintains this balance beautifully over 474 pages, sweeping the reader along with careful characterization and exuberant language...the book has the heartbeat of a fable, and plays out in the rhythms of a story told for generations. The resultant feeling is that of being on someone’s knee while hearing this magnificent tale."—James Scott, The Rumpus.com"Weil’s highly original drama unfolds in a fittingly unique setting…The Great Glass Sea showcases a dystopian society on a grand scale. An ambitious and richly imagined debut novel.”— Malcolm Forbes, The Minneapolis Star-Tribune“Moving and sensitive…evokes the mythic feel of a contemporary classic. There's pathos and tension…breathtaking brilliance. Weil's greatest gift to the reader: a deep understanding of family, personal loss and the abiding love between siblings.”—Jeff Vandermeer, Los Angeles Times“Captivating. A kind of sweeping historical fable...superbly drawn.”—Kendal Weaver, Associated Press"Weil conjures up image after image of great beauty and melancholy...some of them, like a lone figure skating atop the Oranzheria, have an indelible originality....The Great Glass Sea is a work of great ambition and imagination."—Yvonne Zipp, Christian Science Monitor“Vivid prose and soaring imagination…an inventive dystopian tale from a brilliant storyteller about a not-so-far-fetched alternate present, a tale about family and brotherhood that simultaneously brings to light poignant political and philosophical inquiries. It’s a stunningly imagined debut that will dazzle and mesmerize readers as they disappear into its visionary depths and resurface with a new and more profound understanding of fraternal love.”— Bustle, July 2014’s Best Books “Close to 500 pages, Weil’s novel bends genres, uses Russian folklore, and gives you enough little philosophical nuggets to bite on to fill your July quota for strange, but totally engrossing novels.”— Flavorwire, "10 Must Read Books for July""When Weil’s prose and “Russian novel” connect with our contemporary anxieties about the future of labor and value, something magical happens.”—Austin American Statesman"An ambitious and accomplished debut novel, one that reshapes the world even as it reflects our own reality back to us, now more brightly lit than ever before."—The Brooklyn Rail“Thoughtful, elegiac…Weil couches this complex tale in prose that is lyrical, funny, sad, and often echoes folk-tale language. An audacious SF what-if…it will make you think and wonder. Sometimes it will make you laugh, and by the end, it will reward you.”—Fantasy Literature“Lyrical prose pulls readers from each paragraph to the next, and is peppered with brilliant and dark imagery as well as colorful Russian folklore, making The Great Glass Sea a must-read for fans of literary fiction.”— Book Page“Evocative of Russian classics…an ambitious analysis of the fallout of that one single moment, how the drive to work and amass impacts our happiness, and conversely how listlessness or a lack of ambition do the same…The Great Glass Sea is a joy to reflect on…Josh Weil proves himself a storyteller with the ability to deliver the kind of complex literature (with room for interpretation that lends itself to discussion and debate) in a time where fast, easy and digestible are far more common place."—Examiner"If complex literary novels really are done for, Josh Weil must’ve missed the text message. His formidable “The Great Glass Sea” knits together strands of traditional Slavic folklore and futuristic speculative fiction to create a passionate reflection on technology and personal happiness. Spanning almost 500 pages, the novel poses mind-bending questions about politics, ecology and the ambivalent closeness of siblings...Weil pulls off dazzling strokes of storytelling...His distinctive voice obliges readers to slow down and swish certain passages around before swallowing...Pushing the envelope on literary artistry even further, each chapter begins with a pen-and-ink illustration by the author...A genre-bending epic steeped in archetypal stories, “The Great Glass Sea,” rises above the usual Cain-and-Abel formula by way of sensitive, resourceful craftsmanship."—The Atlanta Journal-Constitution"A genuinely fascinating novel—for its inventiveness, its passionate breadth and vision."—Richard Ford“Josh Weil writes away from all the official channels, and yet he writes about exactly where we are now. His vision is sustained by proper instinct and intelligent observation. He is certainly among the most gifted writers of his generation.” — Colum McCann“The Great Glass Sea is our world made uncanny: the Russian countryside of folktale and literature turned darkly luminous, menacing, and brittle. I was intoxicated by this novel's brains and I fell hopelessly in love with its heart. Josh Weil is a spectacular talent."—Lauren Groff“A marvelously strange parable, brought to earth by a nuanced and deeply felt portrait of fraternal love. If The New Valley didn't convince you, The Great Glass Sea will: Josh Weil is a storyteller of the first order."—Joshua Ferris“The Great Glass Sea imagines a Russia of the near-future that stands in for both the rest of the globe and the bonds between us as individuals: a world of both magical bounty and heartbreaking ephemerality. It’s about the urge to on the one hand conserve all we can while on the other to make of all we encounter a field of ceaseless yield, and it’s as sad and filled with wonder on its obsessive subject of brotherly love as any novel I’ve recently encountered.”— Jim Shepard

From the Inside Flap From celebrated storyteller Josh Weil comes an epic tragedy of brotherly love, a sui generis novel swathed in all the magic of Russian folklore and set against the dystopian backdrop of an all too real alternate present.Twin brothers Yarik and Dima have been inseparable since childhood. Living on their uncle’s farm after the death of their father, the boys once spent their days helping farmers in collective fields, their nights spellbound by their uncle’s mythic tales. Years later, the two men labor side by side at the Oranzheria, a sea of glass — the largest greenhouse in the world — that sprawls over acres of cropland. Lit by space mirrors orbiting above, it ensnares the denizens of Petroplavilsk in perpetual daylight and constant productivity, leaving the twins with only work in common—stalwart Yarik married with children, oppressed by the burden of responsibility; dreamer Dima living alone with his mother and rooster, wistfully planning the brothers’ return to their uncle’s land. But an encounter with the Oranzerhia’s billionaire owner changes their lives forever. Dima drifts into a laborless life of bare subsistence while Yarik begins a headspinning ascent from promotion to promotion until both men become poster boys for opposing ideologies, pawns at the center of conspiracies and deceptions that threaten to destroy not only the lives of those they love but the very love that has bonded the brothers since birth. This is a breathtakingly ambitious novel of love, loss, and light, set amid a bold vision of an alternative present-day Russia.

By Tanstaafl First, the reason for four stars rather than five, though much about this book was worth that extra star. Books set in Russia do not have to read as if they are emulating War and Peace. While that book was and is great, its length has kept way too many people from enjoying its writing and its story. While The Great Glass Sea is a little under 500 pages, it reads much longer. And that's unfortunate. The saving grace is that the author did not also emulate the normal method of using complete names each time a person is referenced.Second, the reasons for there being four stars. Little knowledge of Russia and its history is necessary to read this. The story was well written. The storyline, if bought into, was interesting to consider. And, the characters were interesting enough to not detract from the story. The story did, however, suffer from the incomplete side stories of the side characters that made it read as if this had perhaps been of the length of War and Peace then cut to its current size. Lest it seem that I'm arguing for more length while griping about how long it is, more could have been done with less. There was a lot of repetitious material that had me skimming paragraphs I felt I had already read instead of reading more about other people and events.Overall, this was interesting and I'm glad I read it. However, Its length and pace will limit its appeal and keep me from recommending it to my friends who haven't figured out that a 500 page book isn't any longer than the two 250 page ones they just read. If you are interested in a deep family dissecting character study with an unusual plot set a little in the future, then you might be well pleased with this one.

Two brothers torn apart By Dave Astle Dima and Yarik are twin brothers, born in the USSR, raised during the fall of Communism, and now living in a Russia that is far from either of these times, not in years but in circumstances. The twins are as close as any two people can be until their lives take two very different paths. The brothers both work at the Oranzheria, a project that has eliminated darkness in their part of Russia by using mirrors. I can't say that I ever really understood exactly how that worked but that doesn't matter. There are constantly workers at the Oranzheria, either adding new mirrors or working the land beneath the mirrors, growing crops. Weekends are a thing of the past. People are working or they are sleeping. There is nothing else left. When the billionaire behind the Oranzheria takes an interest in Yarik and promotes him, Dima is disenchanted with his job and he quits. For a long time, he does nothing. Then, one day, he decides to recite Pushkin in the square. At first, his audience is small but soon it swells and with the crowd of people that come to hear him come the police. He is warned not to return but he has already done the damage. The people want more from their lives. The Communists want Dima for their side, the anarchists for theirs. All Dima wants is to be able to buy his uncle's old farm and live there with Yarik and Yarik's family and their mother. He isn't trying to start a revolution but somehow it seems that he has.Meanwhile, Yarik has become closer and closer to the billionaire. Soon, the only thing keeping Dima alive is Yarik's relationship with the man in power and the money he pays to keep Dima safe. At the same time he's embarrassed by Dima, by who he has become, and he stops seeing him, stops allowing him to come to his apartment to see his children. He is burdened with the responsibilities he has to take care of his wife and children, his mother, and his troublesome but beloved brother. While this book isn't full of action and is primarily about these 2 men and their lives, I still enjoyed this book. It isn't as much a book about a dystopian Russia as it is about two inseparable brothers who become strangers, and worse than strangers. It is a book about familial love and heartbreak.

The science fiction concepts it develops are extremely interesting and carefully worked-out, but they are contained within an icky and somewhat unconvincing dysfunctional family drama. The science fiction aspects of the plot are gripping. A wealthy oligarch -- one of modern Russia's powerful billionaires -- decides to place space mirrors in orbit that will catch the light of the sun at night, creating perpetual daytime in a sub-Arctic city and the predominantly rural communities near it on the shores of Russia's giant inland Lake Onega. (All localities in the book are given different names from those they bear in real life.)The mirrors focus this perpetual daylight not only on the city and its rural suburbs, but on a gigantic greenhouse next to the city, spanning hundreds of acres and growing continuously, turning a previously sub-Arctic rural area into a bread and vegetable basket for all of Russia. The novel then describes the impact of perpetual daylight on the people, animals and plant life of a previously sub-Arctic city.I found the science fiction aspects of the story fascinating. However, the two protagonists of the novel -- and their family drama -- were not very interesting to me.Yarik and Dima are identical twin brothers, sons of a poor fisherman and a factory worker. They look forward eagerly to spending their adult lives together working on their uncle's farm. Their plans are interrupted by the greenhouse project. One brother becomes an advocate for the greenhouse project; the other becomes a spokesman for the opposition. The brothers' conflict bored me -- the fictional device of having overly-close twins speak for opposing ideological views seemed unnecessary -- I found myself skipping long descriptions of their family problems to read accounts of how the mirror project affected other people and the surrounding environment beyond one dysfunctional family. The book is also severely overwritten -- the author clearly wanted to write beautiful, ornate and lyrical prose, but this makes some parts of the book overly long and repetitious. The book's text could have been cut by 50 percent, and still achieved the effects that the author was apparently striving for.

The last chapter of the dimension-spanning Daedalus series brings the 19th and 22nd centuries together for an explosive finale in the jungles of Venus!

In the year 2135, dangerous alien life forms freed in the destruction of Saturn's moon, Enceladus, are making their way toward Earth. A task force spearheaded by Lt. Cmdr. Shaila Jain is scrambling to beat them there while simultaneously trying to save crewmember Stephane Durand, who was infected during the mission to Saturn and is now controlled by a form of life intent on reopening a transdimensional rift and destroying the human race. But Jain doesn't realize that the possessed Stephane has bigger plans, beaming critical date to other conspirators suspiciously heading not for Earth but for Venus....

In 1809 - a Napoleonic era far different from our own - the French have occupied England with their Corps Eternélle, undead soldiers risen through the darkest alchemy. Only the actions of Lord Admiral Thomas Weatherby and the Royal Navy have kept the French contained to Earth. But the machinations of old enemies point to a bold and daring gambit: an ancient weapon presumed lost in the jungles of Venus. Now Weatherby must choose whether to stay and fight to retake his homeland or pursue the French to the green planet. And Shaila must decide if it's possible to save the man she loves or if he must be sacrificed for the good of two dimensions.

In the dark, alien jungles of Venus, humanity's fate in both dimensions hangs in the balance - forcing past and present to once again join forces against an ancient terror.

Martinez’s “The Venusian Gambit: Book Three of the Daedalus Series” is the most fun I have had reading this year since reading James Morrow’s great novel “Galapagos Regained”. So much fun that I think his third Daedalus novel will win new fans – including yours truly – who haven’t read the two prior novels. And I am sorry he’s opted to end this series on such a high note, since I’d love to read yet another novel chronicling the exploits of 22nd Century Royal Navy officer Lieutenant Commander Shaila Jain, Daedalus Project head Major General Maria Diaz, and 19th Century Royal Navy Lord Admiral Thomas Weatherby. This is a genre-blurring gem of epic proportions, with Martinez’s novels, a most imaginative mashup of Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey/Maturin series with David Weber’s “Honorverse” novels, but without the excessively wordy political intrigue that is indicative of his most recent novels. More so than Weber, Martinez has created a most captivating cast of characters which readers will be all too willing to root for, starting with Jain and her French scientist boyfriend Stephane Durand. Martinez takes us to an England partly occupied by Napoleon’s Corps Eternelle, his army of zombie soldiers risen from the dead through alchemical means most foul, with King George III held captive by Napoleon’s legions of live and undead soldiers. Two universes converge upon the planet Venus as Jain, Diaz, Weatherby and their subordinates must contend with an ancient Martian warrior seeking revenge against those who imprisoned him millennia ago, hoping to revive his long-vanished Solar System empire. Martinez is both a compelling storyteller and a fine prose stylist, doing such a spectacular job in world building, that one can’t help but believe that a fleet of early 19th Century British wooden battleships and cruisers could travel in the same Void as a 22nd Century military spaceship. “The Venusian Gambit” should appeal to diehard fans of intricately plotted space opera as well as those familiar with Naomi Novik’s “Temeraire” series and Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey/Maturin series.

By TrinityTwo The Venusian Gambit, book three of the Daedalus Series by Michael J. Martinez, is the grand finale of a unique and exciting sci-fi series. Part of the beauty of this series is that it’s not simply sci-fi, it’s also daring exploits, nail-biting espionage, brilliant war tactics, and mortal danger experienced by characters the reader truly cares about. In short, it’s kick-ass action with great human drama. In 1803, on an Earth of an alternate history, Rear Admiral Thomas Weatherby continues to fight Napoleon’s devastating invasion of England and its settlements with the help of his brilliant wife Anne and good friend Dr. Andrew Finch, both highly powerful alchemists. Tom’s daughter, Elizabeth and Anne’s son, Philip are now of age and also join in the cause. However, Napoleon is not employing ordinary armed forces, as the French utilize their discovery of a dark alchemical secret to create soldiers from corpses; the relentless “Corps Éternelle”.Meanwhile in 2134, Major General Maria Diaz and Lt. Commander Shaila Jain are trying to stop a chain of events that may lead to another cross-dimensional rift intended to release an ancient evil back into the world. Jain is also preoccupied by the fact that her lover, Dr. Stephane Durand, had been infected during the Enceladus Crisis and a sentient being entered his body and had taken control. She’s determined to do whatever it takes to get him back. The Venusian Gambit is a pleasure to read. Martinez’s story just keeps getting better and better. He's found the perfect balance between the alternate past, where sailing ships are powered by alchemy through which they can journey to distant planets and the future, where traditional space travel is powered by science, and technology can be used with nefarious intent. It’s always great fun when the two worlds collide; I especially enjoy the battle scenes where cannon fire is pitted against lasers. Once again, I was glad to spend time with my favorite characters Tom Weatherby and Shaila Jain, and looked forward to their interactions. I also enjoyed the further character development of General Maria Diaz, Elizabeth Weatherby and Philip St. Germain.Another great thing about the book, and the series, is that Martinez’s cast of characters is diverse. Issues such as sexism are touched upon in a matter of fact way that is never in your face but subtly gets the point across. I was amused, for example, when men of the 19th century found themselves taking orders from a female general from the 22nd and make military faux pas trying to get it right. The conclusion of the series is very satisfying; the conflict is resolved in an explosive burst of action with results that made me a bit emotional. I was honestly sad to reach the last page. I will definitely miss reading about Jain and Weatherby’s exploits. The Venusian Gambit is truly sci-fi magic that you won’t want to miss.Looking to spend time on another world? How about in another timeline? The Daedalus Series is your ticket to adventure and I would highly recommend putting this series on your reading list.

An Excellent Wrap Up By Robert Junker I received a free preview copy of The Venusian Gambit because of an interview I did with the author for a podcast.Ever since the first book, I have been very enamored of the Known Worlds from the second timeline. This book was no exception. Every time we got to visit a new world, I was fascinated. Getting to know a little more about the Venusian culture was great.I'm hoping someday, Mr. Martinez will go back to the Known Worlds.

It is not a digitized copy in modern typeset, but actual copies of the original pages of an old book. I was terribly saddened upon finding that several pages are blurred completely and not legible at all. This will not do. I wonder why the editors cannot make careful changes to fix this problem. I will be exchanging my copy for another with the hope that only this copy had blurred pages.

“EDGES is an elegantly written, quite moving novel that has a lot to say about love, identity, history and the meaning of nationality. The book is worth reading alone for its superb language, but it is gripping and unforgettable as well in its story telling and evocation of place and emotions. It is a wonderful novel by an author with a quite accomplished voice and style, one well deserving a wide and receptive audience.” – Oscar Hijuelos, author of the Pulitzer-prize winning novel, THE MAMBO KING SINGS SONGS OF LOVE “EDGES is a dark and penetrating look at pre-1967 Israel and Palestine through the eyes of a 14 year old…well-written, powerful in both imagery and subject matter.” –Jewish Book World “The author’s vivid sense of landscape, her gift for identifying with both mother and daughter, Arab and Jew, gives the novel a unique sense of balance and brings the reader, regardless of political conviction into sympathy with this portrait of a vanished Jerusalem.” – Mark Mirsky, Fiction “EDGES is an elegant and moving novel. Leora Skolkin-Smith has that rare gift of the writer who can convey the sensibility – the essence of a place and its people – with precision and clarity. A provocative debut.” – Katharine Weber, author of TRIANGLE, THE LITTLE WOMEN, and THE MUSIC LESSON It's summer, 1963. Fourteen-year-old Liana travels to Jerusalem, accompanied by her older sister and larger-than-life mother. The trip takes her from a sheltered life in Westchester County, NY to the hot, bustling, and thoroughly confusing landscape of the Middle East, where Jewish and Arab cultures exist side by side in an uneasy truce. She soon drifts away from her colorful family and their over-the-top relatives, and starts a furtive, increasingly passionate, secret relationship with the runaway son of an American diplomat. Together, they abscond to neighboring Palestine, where they hide in an abandoned monastery, while a frantic search for the two missing youngsters gets under way on the other side of an increasingly hostile border. Both a deeply sensual story and a vivid depiction of a world growing increasingly fractured, EDGES is a masterfully written triumph of nuanced storytelling. Gorgeous novel, replete and finest kind By KatPanama When I finished reading "Edges" I whispered to myself -- whoa, I hope she's got another one in the hopper because I very much want to hear more from this particular and fine voice. Israel and Palestine -- they would seem to be our eternally counterpointed voices -- but maybe not. Kudos to Skolkin-Smith for her vision. The voices here are finest kind. It's a 4.5 rating for me.

11 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully written By Sharon Katz It's the early 1960s, Liana Barish is fourteen years old and her family is coming unglued. She grew up in a normal suburb of Westchester County, New York, but then her father committed suicide. Liana longs for her father but her mother warns her never to bring his name up for discussion. Her sister, Ivy separates herself from the family whenever possible, even refusing to sit near or look at them in public. Her mother, Ada, had grown up in Israel but never spoke of her past. Suddenly, she decides to drag Liana and her sister back to visit her homeland.Liana and her mother are very close, too close as her mother's large presence sometimes embraces her too hard, almost merging with Liana, taking over. Once they get to Israel, Liana begins to step out of her mother's overwhelming shadow. As she understands snippets of her mother's still very secret past and examines the strange customs of the people living in Israel, Liana begins to open her eyes and ears to the world surrounding her. Two important news items on every Israeli's mind at the time is the fight for water between Israel and Jordan and the story of an American Diplomat's missing son, a young man in his twenties. As Liana begins to painfully feel the need to separate from her mother, she plans her escape and secrets clothing and loose change aside for a quick run to Paris, a place her father loved. One day, right outside her aunt's home, Liana is witness to the shooting of an innocent Arab boy in a skirmish between sides. Coming to the child's rescue is the missing American Diplomat's son who had simply set off on his own to travel the Middle East. Before she quite understands what she's doing, Liana runs away with the Diplomat's son across the Israeli border. Even though she's only fourteen, he guides her through her sexual awakening and they wind up living together in abandoned places in lonely areas, surviving with the help of the poorer Arab people. As Liana experiences more of life outside her mother's influence, she truly begins to grow up.EDGES is a beautifully written, highly introspective novel that involves the readers senses to the fullest. We can feel, touch, taste, smell and experience the emotions on every page. How the new, unaccustomed life and world in Israel affects Liana is made both poignant and painfully real. Liana's relationship with her mother, Ada, is presented to the readers in all its complexities and the author, Leora Skolkin-Smith, holds nothing back in permitting the readers to live through every moment with the characters within its pages.EDGES is a book not to be missed.

I started reading it earlier, and then it was borrowed. As a result, I purchased another one.The story focuses mainly on Liana and her mother. Earlier on we learn about her mother's complicated background. On the surface, Liana's life is typical of a young American teenager. Shortly, she becomes involved with William, a diplomat's son, who has left his family.Liana and William survive and make do with very basic needs while living in a monastery. Surprisingly, he carries on his travels without her in the end. As she returns to her grandmother's home, she observes "the path cut through a dense grove of pine trees and I followed it, riding the bright sunlight breaking through branches. The morning had started over the fields. There were some dried blood orange trees on the bank and the cows and the goats walked loose, grazing on the yellow grass. Almonds fell from the dwindling almond trees along the road toward the Allenby Bridge, the way to Amman."Thank you GoodReads for the book.

This book has great recipes, with easy-to-find ingredients, which is simple to make--my dog loves it! The recipes tend to make a good portion of food, so if you have only one dog, as I do, make sure you use the food as "treats" and don't overfeed your dog. I keep a stash of these homemade treats in the fridge for training. Great book!

I didn't know that peanut butter was such a potent treat for dogs, so that was a surpirse. Lots of recipes that look fantastic, I only missed some tips about foods to definately avoid, such as chocolate and onion. But a future edition will probably include this tip, too. Great read. Thanks!

Young Noah Adler, passionate, ruthlessly idealistic, is the prodigal son of Montreal's Jewish ghetto. Finding tradition in league with self-delusion, he attempts to shatter the ghetto's illusory walls by entering the foreign territory of the goyim. But here, freedom and self-determination continue to elude him. Eventually, Noah comes to recognize "justice and safety and a kind of felicity" in a world he cannot - entirely - leave behind. Richler's superb account of Noah's struggle to scale the walls of the ghetto overflows with rich comic satire. Son of a Smaller Hero is a compassionate, penetrating account of the nature of belonging, told with the savage realism for which Mordecai Richler's fiction is celebrated.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. This Is An Interesting Novel By Richler - But Not His Best By J.E.Robinson This is a good 200 page novel by Richler and if was a bit longer and had a bit more character development this would be a 5 star novel. As a point of reference, I have read all of Richler's major works and a few of his early novellas. This was written near the beginning of his career. It follows his first book, The Acrobats, which can be best described as muddled. That novel has not stood up well to the test of time, and there should be no doubt why. It is not good. But Richler wrote more than The Acrobats - all better - and the second novel, the present work, is far better and gives us a taste of what will follow later.I like Richler's work, but from my reading of his novels it is clear that Richler went through a number of writing phases. Contrary to his critics, he did experiment with his writing. If anything his middle books have too much sex or are even obsessed with sex, while some of his later books such as Solomon Gursky are a bit too ambitious or overly complicated. The present work is from the early years and follows his St. Urbain theme. In short, the present book is more like his latter books, even though it was written early in his career.Modecai Richler (1931 to 2001) grew up in Montreal and that city is the setting for many of his stories. Many of his novels are about Jews living in Canada and Britain post WWII. He is best known for his tales of life in and around St. Urbain Street. That is an area of three story buildings or walk up row houses located just east of the mountain in Montreal, and north of the commercial center of the city. At one time this was the center of Jewish immigrant life in Montreal. His break out novel wa Duddy Kravitz which is still a great read whether you have seen the movie or not. Still, I like his last book, Barney's Vision, which is his best written piece of work. The novel lacks the edge and drama of Duddy Kravitz but has things in it that make it better. This present short novel was written early in his career and it is entertaining. The present book is about three generations of a Jewish family and in particular the story of the twenty year old son, Noah, and his relationship with his father who is "the smaller hero" and his grandfather, a strict and more orthodox Jew. This is part a "self discovery" story and part a love story with a thirty year old woman outside the faith. The first 50 pages wander, but then the story settles down and it is a good novel.Comparing it to Richler's first novel, The Acrobats, we see a much more focused effort with fewer and more interesting characters. Overall, it is similar to some of his later novels written decades later. It is good but not great.

Quilter's Precut Companion: Handy Reference Guide + 25 Precut-Friendly Blocks, by Missouri Star Quilt Co.

Review Are you still a bit confused on precuts? C&T Publishing has put together a nice 32 page booklet called “Quilter's Precut Companion”. This all-in-one guide to precuts is a spiral-bound, easy to take with you reference guide that covers everything you need to know about precuts. This little gem is filled with charts and information on everything precut…did you know there are at least 7 different names for 10”x10” squares? I liked the chart called Precuts and Quilt Size, if no other fabric is used, this chart gives you an idea of how many packs or strips of the most common precuts you will need to make the various size quilts. You will also find instructions for making Easy Half-Square Triangles and blocks using the half-square triangle units. In fact there are 25 traditional quilt blocks you can make from precut squares, strips, and triangles. (The Appliqué Society Newsletter, Jan/Feb 2016)

By Susan D As a newbie quilter this book is fantastic.I am sure anyone who quilts will find this bookinvaluable. The spiral bound book provideswith a quick and easy guide to quilting.Using pre-cuts makes quilting so much easier. It's difficult when you start out to be ableto afford all the fabric you would like.Going into a shop you feel overwhelmedwith the amount of choice you have.Choosing pre-cuts means you can get afantastic array of fabrics that make brilliant quilts. The designers take the decisions for you andput together the fabrics that make amazing quilts.Once you have the fabric you want to useyou can use the book to help make all the decisions about your quilt. The book starts by giving you all the standardquilt sizes including ones with a drop & tuck. You then have a breakdown of the standardprecut sizes and names. This is all new to me and it's fantasticallyhelpful. It takes the language and makes it easy to follow. The guide also breaks down how manyprecuts you will need for each size of quilt. You then have diagrams and sizes for cuttingfat quarters into each of the sizes. From there it sets out how to cut layer cakes andcharm squares. Then it gives you wonderful tips onusing precuts. You then have a diagram that detailswhat yardage is required for borders.Bonding and backings are then broken downin various sizes.I just can't believe how much informationis packed in. It explains binding widthand shows example diagrams of different bindings.Bias strips, opening seams and offsetare explained. The back of the book breaks down triangles. It takes you step by step throughthe different designs you can make with them. The step by step instructions andsizing graphs make everything so simple. You can follow each step by step to makeamazing quilts. This book is fantastic and is a wonderfulinformation book for any quilter.I have been afraid of how to work withmy pre-cuts but this book helps make more sense.I would highly recommend this book.I'll be using it time and again. It's useful to any level of quilter.I received this book to review. However all opinions expressed are my own.No monies were exchanged.

By Mom of 2 Boys Great little reference book, but the cover is cheap and flimsy and arrived bent. If I'd seen this in person, I'm not sure I would've spent $10 on it. Please publish this book with either a sturdy paperback cover or a hardcover. I feel a bit ripped off based on the quality of the cover. Inside pages are fine.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. This is a really terrific reference guide By Dona S. Harris This is a really terrific reference guide, especially for anyone using precuts in quilting projects. I have two of them - one I keep by my computer when I am ordering online, and the other in my purse for when I am out shopping. It is packed with not only dimensions, but ways to cut them, samples showing how to use them in quilt blocks, quilt sizes. For the price, this is the best quilting reference companion I have ever owned. Some may wonder about the cover, but I like it. It gives me a place to put my notes, and fabric swatches for when I am fabric shopping.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a children's book. It contains adult language, scenes of a violent and sexual nature, and the use of hallucinogenic drugs. It’s a book about a tree! But it’s also a book about the people he’s encountered in his two centuries of life, and how they’ve played a role in shaping him, perhaps as much as the elements have. Q - Quercus Treen seems like a real person to me, and I experienced such a mix of emotions reading his story (hilarious laughter, sadness, anger etc.) - what is the most important message you convey through Treen’s character? Writing about a tree in this day and age forces one to be somewhat environmentally sympathetic, if that’s the correct phrase. Similarly, it can’t be done without noting changes in human behaviour during his life span. Yes, he has a sense of humour, but it’s inevitable that longevity will bring happy and sad times, not to mention loss, especially given that he’s lived through an industrial revolution, two world wars and the seventies! However, he’s a positive tree who has worked out that good must always follow bad, and vice versa. Even the ending is bittersweet, if you consider it. Overall, I hope it’s a positive book. I know Quercus Treen would hope that!

I note their breathing relax, and their eyes soften. It doesn’t take long before a placid smile tugs at their mouths, and I know their minds are working in a healthy way, branching off and stretching out in mimicry of what stands above them and lies beneath them.”“I know that being here with nothing but me and the sky above their heads takes people in two directions, forward or backward. Back to happy times as children, or as young lovers, or forward to something imagined to be better than the present.”These are a couple excerpts from the book that I wrote about in my journal. Bracken's insight he provides into the minds and actions of the characters from Treen’s perspective are so accurate and relatable to many areas of our lives today and what we see around us. I read this before I began an adventure around the world and it pushed me in the healthiest way to go off the grid, embrace my surroundings, and explore my thoughts deeper than I’ve been able to in my typical day to day life. The author creates a desire in the reader to leave the couch and spend time outdoors soaking in the world around us. All of this is wrapped into a beautiful story with loveable characters we can see bits and pieces of ourselves in.
