By Florida Kayaker This is a review for Adult Coloring Book: A Mandala Beginners Coloring Book For Adults.I have downloaded a lot of adult coloring books and have had really good luck on almost all of them. This the my first experience that makes me wish I had not bothered to spend my time or money. There are 14 pages to color in this book. Most are a bit blurry. There are links all over the book inviting your to join the adult coloring club. There are a couple that invited me to click to download the pages so I could print them. I carefully avoided the invites to join the adult coloring club. When I clicked on the download the pages invite I of course got the invitation to join the club. That was very irritating.I checked every single one of the links to print and all were to join the club! I finally caved and gave them my email address on the club invitation. The link only talked about the club and said nothing about printing my pages but I figured it must somehow be involved. The link did say you will not get spam because we hate spam...so do I!Moments later I had two email. The first was a link to print the pages. It worked. I printed a page and sure enough, it was blurry also. The next email was a thank you for joining the club and would I please confirm my subscription. Why would I do that? I certainly don't need more blurry pictures to color.I am quite disappointed in this book and will be promptly deleting it from my library.

I'll probably never look at it again By Southern Mississippi Adult coloring books are the latest fad for hobbies, and one of the best to come around in a long time. Since I'd never given up on coloring, I hadn't paid that much attention to the new flood of books geared strictly for adults. Coloring books in digital format were a truly strange idea, so I thought I would take a look at this one. It's not that great. The designs were mostly pretty bleh when viewed on my Fire tablet, and appeared rather small in comparison to the entire page. I didn't even explore the idea of printing them out, largely because I wasn't that excited about them in digital format. The book does include a link to download the designs in a printable format, but even that leaves me wondering what the point of an e-book is if we have to download to print. On the more technical side, there isn't much text, so there are no glaring editing errors. There is also no table of contents, making the user actually page through to find a design they want to take a second look at.Overall, the book is okay, but it's probably never going to get a second look from me.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Quality of pages copied are bad. Objects on each page printed with distorted pixels By Natasha C Quality of pages copied are bad. Objects on each page printed with distorted pixels. Also, pages were printed straight from a sight where multiple pages in the book only have links to download PDFs.

In the fourth book of the Tales of the Scavenger’s Daughters series, the fates of three people who’ve never met converge in profound and unexpected ways.

Mari, the daughter of the town scavenger, grew up knowing hardship, but she never could have anticipated the struggles that now face her as an adult. Feeling alone and isolated, she dreams of a better life. On the other side of town, a frightened little girl named An Ni is forced to live on the streets, but she silently longs for the one thing she’s never known—a family. Max, a struggling American photojournalist, arrives in China with only one goal in mind: to face his demons and put an end to his own unbearable suffering.

From the bestselling author of A Thread Unbroken comes an emotional, hope-filled story that offers a fresh glimpse into the life of a remarkable family.

Red Skies (Tales of the Scavenger's Daughters Book 4), by Kay Bratt

From the Author Though Red Skies is the fourth book in the Tales of the Scavenger's Daughters, I wrote it to be enjoyed as a standalone without a cliff-hanger so that a reader may read it without having to start from the first book in the Tales of the Scavenger's Daughters and without having to read another book to get the conclusion.

About the Author

Kay Bratt is a child advocate and author of the books Train to Nowhere, Chasing China, The Bridge, A Thread Unbroken, and the acclaimed memoir of the years she spent working in Chinese orphanages, Silent Tears: A Journey of Hope in a Chinese Orphanage. She has actively volunteered for several nonprofit organizations, including An Orphan’s Wish (AOW) and the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for abused and neglected children. In China, she was honored with the Pride of the City award for humanitarian work. After living in China for several years, Bratt now resides in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in South Carolina, with her husband, daughter, dog, and cat.

By Mama to Many As with all of Kay's books, I could not put this book down until I had finished it.I felt like I was in Beijing in the apartment...watching first hand as everything unfolded right before my eyes. Kay's captivating way she intertwines her characters, the emotions, experiences, history, Mandarin, relationships... it was so real. I appreciated learning more about the street children of China and wanted to just reach out and hold them and tell them they were safe. I wiped many tears away, both happy and sad ones, as I read. I saw myself cringe, duck and shriek in terror... she makes her characters and experiences come alive.I loved this book!

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. An intriguing tale that provides well thought out details to make the story captivating! By Mary Braxton I received this book in exchange for an honest review.Set in the world of the Tales of the Scavenger's Daughters series, Red Skies is Kay Bratt's newest, and best yet, work.It is another captivating story that manages to combine a story of fiction with elements of nonfiction that gives readers a look at China's history, language and culture. I am the type of reader that when I start a good book, I do not want to stop until I am done. Kay Bratt's works are definitely hard for me to fight that temptation so that I can take care of duties- I just want to read it cover-to-cover without stopping. This title, and the other titles in the series that this one is set in, can stand alone- if you have not read the other books (though I highly recommend you do so!), you are not missing anything. If you have read the other books, she gives you glimpses into storylines from those books and it is truly a continuance. This is great, since I never want the story to end! It is also a testament to her abilities as a writer, as there is a fine line between giving so much information that you are retelling the story from another book which could bore readers who have read it and not giving enough information for those who have not read the stories in a series. Mrs. Bratt does an outstanding job of making sure both sets of readers will have an intriguing story!

Right from the beginning of Red Skies the reader is drawn in to the story of Mari, Max & An Ni. The characters come to life as the story unfolds. As the story unfolds I laughed, cried & held my breath in anticipation. This is the perfect companion novel to the Tales of the Scavenger' Daughters! Mari made her first appearance in Tangled Vines as one of Benfu & Calli's daughters. Red Skies tells the story of Mari's life in Beijing away from her forever family. Life is not always what it seems. We put on a show for the outside world. And then we go home, and the truth comes out. Mari's life is not what she thought it would have been. One day she sees 11 year old An Ni on a street corner begging. Mari knows that life and has An Ni on her mind. When Mari meets up with Max, a foreigner from the United States, the story gets more complicated. Max has his own devil to deal with.I highly suggest you purchase this book to find out what happens. You will not be sorry. Kay Bratt's books are always a must read!

Because Origami: One sheet geometric models, by Jorge Jaramillo

About the Author Jorge Jaramillo is an electronic engineer from Colombia who works as a Loss Control Engineer in the insurance market and he's been doing so for over 15 years. Jorge did origami as a kid but stopped, thinking it was a dead end, since he didn’t know there were more models than the few he knew. Many years later he found Peter Engel’s 8 Point Star on the desk of a workmate and that day he was hooked again with origami, when he learnt there were plenty of models, books and all kinds of information. At first Jorge tried to do figurative origami but he soon learnt his skills were better fitted for geometric models. He did lots of tessellations and one sheet geometric models and soon he started created some simple ones, mostly variations on existing models. Jorge has created over 70 models and his first book “Because Origami Vol. 1” contains 20 of his best ones. Jorge is married and has no kids.

In the Name of Love: Stories about Revenge, Redemption, and Rebirth, by Laurie Boris

From the Author What is Flash Fiction? Flash fiction might sound like a new literary form, but it's been around for a long time, going all the way back to Aesop's Fables, by some accounts. For most of the twentieth century, it was simply called very short fiction or short-short stories. Hemingway wrote some. So did Anton Chekhov, O. Henry, Ray Bradbury, and Franz Kafka, among others. At its essence, flash contains the elements of a traditional short story--protagonist, conflict, complications, and resolution (or a suggestion of one)--woven into about a thousand words or less. For a writer accustomed to spreading out over the length of a novel, getting down to the nut of a story is a great challenge. I started writing flash fiction as a creative exercise to keep my brain occupied between novel drafts. As I wrote, I grew to love the form, and the satisfaction of capturing a lightning-bug moment in a storytelling bottle. I hope you enjoy this collection of short and shorter stories. Maybe it will inspire you to write your own.

Drury I've read most of the books by this author so I felt confident that I would enjoy this collection of short stories. That confidence was rewarded with a diverse group of quick hitting, slice of life, docu-fiction of the sort only a keen observer and near psychic like Laurie can deliver. All of the strengths I have admired in her longer works are here in full force. They are just packaged in small doses to keep my addiction to her craft strong and the withdrawal symptoms at bay. These are quick hits, but fully packed with interesting characters, difficult life obstacles, and emotional perils which while thought provoking are endearing. Laurie has a unique ability to bring her characters close to the readers heart.

Her descriptions are always delectable, and her ability to delight and surprise always astonishes me. The stories in this collection vary from very short to mid-length. Each is well-crafted and well edited. If this is your first introduction to her writing, I assure you, you'll be back for more.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely Fabulous! By Donna Dillon I am a big fan of collections. I love quick, short stories but Laurie Boris takes it to a whole other level. For me it was like being on a literary speed date. Each story ranges from maybe three pages to a mere one page, but are so well crafted that you are drawn in, and touched, and made to remember. Whether it be a first kiss in a blanket fort or the smell of pound cake, something in these stories will find you and make you feel. That is her speciality, making people feel, and she is the master. I read it, and immediately went back to page one to experience it all over again I can't recommend it highly enough. Bravo.

I am always looking for ways to make the Christmas season a more Christ centered holiday for my family and this book was just what I needed to spark some ideas. I love her twist on changing the 12 days of Christmas into the 12-day nativity to focus on the Savior and his birth. The book also shares other ways to celebrate the nativity, how to celebrate with neighbors, how the nativity is celebrated around the world, a list of children's books that focus on the nativity, and even includes templates for the activities that require some craftiness. This book is great for families of all ages and would make a wonderful and thoughtful gift too.

How do we function in a world which is both as randomly and intentionally cruel, as it is randomly and intentionally kind? Can we make sense of our lives when so much around us makes no sense? In this, the final book of the trilogy, we find out what it means to be a "man who loves too much". More importantly, we discover if Billy Green is such a man.

The Man Who Loved Too Much - Book 3: Oxymoron (Volume 3), by John Rachel

About the Author John Rachel has a B.A. in Philosophy, has traveled extensively, been a songwriter and music producer, and is a bipolar humanist. He has spent his life trying to resolve the intrinsic clash between the metaphysical purity of Buddhism and the overwhelming appeal of narcissism. With the publication of the The Man Who Loved Too Much trilogy, he now has two more novels in the pipeline: Love Connection, a drug-trafficking love story set in Japan, and The Last Giraffe, an anthropological drama involving both the worship and devouring of giraffes. It unfolds in sub-Saharan Africa. Also in the works is a creative non-fiction work, The Naked American. It is allegedly an account of author Rachel's travels since leaving America August 2006, but more likely the product of the voices in his head which have plagued him since puberty. Several prominent publishers have declared that they will do everything in their power to make sure this book never sees the light of day. The author’s last permanent residence in America was Portland, Oregon where he had a state-of-the-art ProTools recording studio, music production house, a radio promotion and music publishing company. He recorded and produced several artists in the Pacific Northwest, releasing and promoting their music on radio across America and overseas. John Rachel now lives in a quiet, traditional, rural Japanese community, where he sets his non-existent watch by the thrice-daily ringing of sonorous temple bells, at a local Shinto shrine.

By Arlena Title: The Man Who Loved too Much - Book 3- OxymoronAuthor: John RachelPublisher: Literary Vagabond BooksSeries: Book 3Reviewed By: Arlena DeanRating: FiveReview:"The Man Who Loved Too Much Book 3 - Oxymoron By John RachelWhat I liked about this novel.....Now, this was an excellent novel. I would very much recommend you read this authors first two books..1 and 2 before attacking this read. Now in saying that... I will know say again this book 3: Oxymoron...was quite some read. This author brings it all together for the reader in this trilogy "The Man Who Loved Too Much" and answering the one important question... did twenty six year old Billy Green love too much? One thing for sure I did understand Billy's love for his mom and his girlfriend Candy. The reader will find from the read...dear Billy has gone through a lot....now we find in this book 3 he is still trying to survive which seems to be so hard for him to do. Not knowing what he wants from him life Billy seems to be drifting day by day in a state of confusion. Where will this leave him? I liked how this author was able to bring out with his relationships with various people and or .... Billy's mom, Candy, Amethyst, Natalie & Pam, Apooalypso, Mr. Marty Dykstra,$ 2,227,861,...Who and What was Billy Green?...man or [Woman], Sabrina, Samantha, [Dr. Bender, Dr. Hegel], who was ... Cream Cheese and Dr. Freundlich to name a few. All of these characters plus a few others will add some great interest to this read that will keep you turning to pages for more of what all Billy is going through in his state of confusion. Will Billy be able to come to some kind of conclusion in the end? Well, I don't want to give too much of this good story away other than say you will have to pick up this read and see for yourself how well this author brings it all out for Billy...the "man who loves too much....can't love too much." I loved that Epilogue...where it brings this series...book 1, 2 & 3 together so well. Thank you to the author...it was a excellent read!

Billy Green (26, Catholic, Cornell) along with Amethyst Reigns (f), & Candy (Billy’s G/F) were asked to model/pose for graduate students at the NYU Art Department’s sculpture lab.The final sculpture was to be entitled The Genesis of Jealousy. The 3 were paid $100 @ piece. What would Irene Green (wife/mom, nee Jovovich) later call Billy & tell him about Harold Green (husband/father, aka Duke)? Why would Marty Dykstra (attorney) call Billy?Detroit, MI. Who is Sabrina? Why did Billy contribute to Apocalypso (activist) cause? What role does Dr. Malcolm N. Bender, M.D. (BS; Biological Science, MS: Abnormal Psychology, Human Sexuality) play in Billy’s life? What about Billy & Candy relationship? What did Billy reveal to Dr. Christian Freundlich?I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written romance book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great wacky weird romance movie, or mini TV series. Put on your thinking cap & a must read to the very end. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.Thank you for the free Goodreads; Literary Vagabond Books; Author; PDF bookTony Parsons MSW (Washburn)

Money By John David Lionel Brooke The Money ParadoxDespite all the political bulls*** ranting and raving the reality is that it still comes down to money. That is the unintended message telegraphed to me through the incredible Niagara of grotesque situations, one liners and one off comments mouthed by the protagonist Billy Green. This is an odd Odyssey of confused contemporary times in New York City, the nation and the entire world.Billy had been and continued to make significant contributions from his unearned windfall funds to Apocalypso’s political machine and citizen’s militia. Thus supporting another leader and his unquestioning followers into another stupid useless reign of fear and terror. Clever successful strategies that swelled his ego and in the end produced absolutely zero in changing political reality. For me this book is about male and female humans and and all the other things they share between thighs and ears. A circular tale chasing itself through drugs and booze to an unsatisfactory and inconsequential vacuum ending for me."You can never love too much", is the end message, but what the Hell does our Billy mean by love. That damn four letter word projects so many conflicting emotional messages. Love is the oxymoron embedded in this vapid rapid word whirling story.Billy has not changed one iota. A ton of money didn't change him, in the end he is still the dick-head he was at the end of 'Entrendre' book two in this Trilogy.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. [uncopyedited ms]Introduction All the stages of the three-ringed circus are active, but don’t be fooled by what you see. Having picked up this book, and containing the knowledge needed to read it’s pages, you must have experienced enough life to understand you can’t always trust your eyes. The magician in the left side ring; does he truly possess the divine gift to saw his lovely assistant in half without bringing any harm to her? Was he blessed with god-like power to perform amazing feats before an audience, such as yourself? More than likely, this well dressed young man is a fraud. Yes, he has been given a gift. A divine gift? I dare say no. A gift to deceive gullible minds through his carefully practiced artistic slide of hand. Remove the lavish costume and elaborate props, the man you are watching so intensely, bluntly put, is nothing more than a liar. The Black Moon Circus has become a welcome sanctuary for the truly magically gifted and extremely bizarre looking damned. In any usual setting, you might ridicule these spectacular beings for their animal-like features, or supernatural talents. Creatures like these, or freaks, are a coveted brand at the Black Moon, and its security is exclusively limited to them. Chapter 1 In a whirlwind of primary colors, sequins and sparkles reflected in harsh stage lighting, accompanied by eerie, whimsical music, appropriate only for occasions like this. The cheers of the crowd fused into one continuous roar of excitement. Each onlooker was restless, watching amazing feats being performed by people who were nothing less than extraordinary, which was precisely what the Black Moon Circus promised. The ultimate freak show. Dai had the entire audience entranced as she moved around her giant golden cage, twisting around the bars, twirling in the long silk ribbons, and seducing her observers with her aerial skills. With one leg wrapped in a ribbon and the other leg wrapped in another, she smoothly, and effortlessly, lowered her body into an air born split, where she then continued to spin faster and faster, until she was nothing more than the yellow blur of her costume. Aside from her supreme aerial talent, Dai possessed a few unique physical attributes, making her a valuable commodity to the strange circus. Her beauty was unparalleled, and so extreme, it couldn’t even be hindered by her unusual dark eyes and brisk beak resembling the common Japanese Yellow Bunting. The rare bird-like features found Dai a home at the Black Moon, but her sultry persona and goddess image found her a place in the hearts of the circus’s most loyal attendees. Everyone was so mesmerized and absorbed in her spectacle, no one heard the scream of terror from back stage. “What is it? What happened?” Elizaveta was first to respond to the cry. “Cressida, dear girl, you’re trembling.” She pulled the young, wavy brown haired girl into her muscular arms. Cressida was inconsolable, and covered in tears mixing into her already soot covered face. “Murdered!” She belted in a burst of hysterics. “He’s dead! He’s been murdered.” A long, slender, unclean finger pointed to a shadowy figure strewn between scenery changes and props. “Dear God. Who is it?” Elizaveta turned her face away from the image as she thought what to do. “What is all the fuss about?” A tall, bronze skinned man, wearing an elaborate kurta and turban approached the girls with authority. “Sameer. Forgive Cressida. Something terrible has happened. Someone has been killed.” Sameer’s eyes grew wide, and his jaw tightened. “Again?” He observed the dark, unfortunate character from afar. His ere became angry and regretful. “Cressida, go wash up, baccā. Someone else will clean the equipment tonight.” Grateful to obey, Cressida scurried away from the horror with her hands clasped tightly around her mouth, still sobbing. Elizaveta watched after her longingly. “Poor girl. She’s only seventeen. A child. She shouldn’t have to witness this. No one should.” A mournful sigh sounded as her hands moved across her blonde hair, as if to make her already slick bun even tighter, and emphasizing her dark eyes and masculine features. She was still dressed in her performance garb, which suddenly felt too restricting and foolish in all its glamour. “Who is it, Elizaveta?” Sameer’s voice was steeped with unease. “I do not know, sir.” He held out his hand. “I’m going to need you to help me.” Those words coming from Sameer surprised Elizaveta. As the official ringleader and founder of the Black Moon, he was very sure and independent. All the members looked to him for guidance. However, Sameer saw his performers as if they were his own children. When one of them suffered, he suffered.Elizaveta took his hand, and together they moved to discover the dreaded answer. The figure wore all black and lay unnaturally posed face down, but they knew the identity of the poor soul instantly.“No.” Elizaveta gasped and forced the body over with Sameer’s assistance. “No no no no.” Her arms embraced the man’s unresponsive face. White makeup smeared the sleeves of her costume. “Louis, my dear friend. No. Not you.” She cried.Tears glazed Sameer’s eyes as well, but his expression was solid, as he removed the turban from his own head, and began wrapping Louis’ distressed expression. “He was the best mime this world has ever known.” Sameer spoke with deepest respect. “Tonight he gave his greatest performance.”“Indeed.” Elizaveta choked her agreement while wiping her eyes with a tissue she had pulled from her breast. “Absolutely brilliant.”Having given his final and greatest performance earlier that very evening, Louis D’Oust was undeniably magnificent. A common mime would feign being caught in a glass box, or pulling an impossibly heavy invisible piano. Monsieur D’Oust was real.As one of the oldest adopted members of the Black Moon family, Louis’ skills evolved into extraordinary atypical talent. As did all the performers under Sameer’s care. Louis had mastered the discipline of levitation, and utilized this practice in his finale as he floated away from an awestruck audience in his “invisible” bubble. An incredible sight that would never be seen again.“He was strangled.” Sameer concluded. “Look at this.” He motioned to the rope around the corpse’s neck. It appeared as though a stick had been twisted to make the rope as tight as possible. “What kind of animal would…” Elizaveta started, but stopped quickly. “It was someone who knew him!” Her hand flew to her mouth as she fought the urge to be sick. “Someone who knew he would not cry out. He couldn’t. Someone who knew he had no tongue.”Louis’ life had been as tragic as his death. As a young French lad, Louis was fortunate enough to be raised by a mother and father, but his most meaningful bond was found with his childhood soul friend, and secret love, Angelique Pascal. She was quite ordinary with her knobby knees, dark eyes, and lackluster hair, but in the sight of her admirer, Elle était son monde. When the inseparable duo both reached twelve years in age, Louis couldn’t help but notice a few odd markings on Angelique’s arms, and sometimes on her face, and he confronted her about them. She unwillingly disclosed the secret behaviors of her father. The way he would yell at her, hit her, and sometimes touch her. Monsieur Pascal was removed from his home shortly after, as Louis strived to be his beloved’s rescuer and reported her father to the authorities. However, Louis’ heroic deed had uncalculated consequences, and Angelique was sent to the orphanage. Five years passed, and Louis did not hear so much as a whisper of Angelique’s whereabouts. Finally, 1900, Louis caught a fateful glimpse of Le Petit Journal, with a familiar name inked into one of the columns. His dearest Angelique was dead. Brutally killed in the Republic of Chad, along with her new family. They were numbered among the French Colonial casualties in the battle of Kousseri. Louis, realizing his role in his love’s tragic end, plummeted into a great depression. In his despair, he vowed to never open his heart to love again, and swore he would leave the affairs of others as their own. To ensure the oath would be kept, Louis allowed himself to be swept away by his passion, and proceeded to cut out his tongue. There was not much use for a mute in the city. Louis struggled to find employment, and was consistently ridiculed while he worked the streets of Paris as a mime, earning coins for food. It was here, after a year, in this pathetic condition, Sameer found him. He saw the potential in Louis, and offered him adventure and glory. Most importantly, Sameer offered sanctuary, which Louis could not refuse. “What should we tell the others?” Elizaveta wondered aloud. Sameer massaged his forehead as he considered the proper protocol. “Tell them Louis D’Oust is dead, but keep it quiet and respectful. I don’t want chaos, especially with Miguel arriving tonight. After his brother’s accident, it’s a miracle he’s returning to us at all.” He huffed a sigh then thought of something important. “Elizaveta. Do not share the alarming fact we discovered here tonight.”“What fact is that, Sir?”“We have a killer among us.” (Sorensen)

Every so often there are people talking in a different language, and while I can tell what they are saying is not super important to the story, I did use a translation ap. Guess it pushes readers to learn. I also really like the chapter images and the typewriter font. The matched the 1920s era well.

Review                                                                                      "A brilliant, funny and disturbingly honest look at teen sexuality, sensibilities, and fantasies." - The Wilde Writers Collective

From the Author I grew up in places much like the fictional town of Weston in my novel Atom Heart John Beloved. I always enjoyed reading books with the gay boy attracted to straight boy dynamic, and several of my stories deal with just that.

From the Inside Flap "Using a wildly unique narrative voice, Atom Heart John Beloved is brave and distinctive. It's the most impressive piece of literate gay fiction that I've recently read."The character of John Parker is beautifully drawn, arrogant and conceited but also exposed and broken. My understanding and sympathy toward him fluctuated throughout the work. Particularly impressive are the passages where John denies particular feelings and we can feel the lies, but understand a truth hiding behind clouded eyes. This style of writing is not easily achieved."This book won't satisfy those looking for familiarly structured m/m romance. I describe it as a detailed character study ensconced in a coming-of-age love story. Atom Heart John Beloved does many things well, but conveys best the love John feels for Nathan and how transformative that becomes. It will drag you through the range of emotions and includes themes both within and beyond the story that could make for tough going."It's rare to find myself so engrossed in a novel. Luke Hartwell had me up late into the night devouring this book from cover to cover. It would make an excellent group read or book club title with plenty here to talk about. I can see why it is making "underrated" lists."A re-read is guaranteed. I give it 5 stars and look forward to more of Luke's work."- Rick, Goodreads

Best Bisexual/Transgender Debut Novel/Book: Atom Heart John Beloved by Luke Hartwell By Elisa After the very long ride to read this book, I feel like worn out, an hole was forming in my heart and the author suddenly filled it in a rush, so strongly that it let me hurting. This novel is good... disturbingly good. John Parker is an eighteen years old straight teenager who decides to give himself up for sex to his best friend Nathan; Nathan is gay and in love with John, and John is thinking he can be Nathan's sex toy, while at the same time having a girlfriend and some other heterosexual adventures on the side. While with all the women he is the dominant lover, with Nathan he is always the submissive; strange as it's, John is able to have sex with a man only if that man is Nathan, and only if Nathan is in command. At first the author, through John's own words, let you have an imagine of John that is not exactly good; he seemed quite conceited, convinced he is like a God gift for girls and guys, sex on legs like he said of himself. I didn't like much John, especially since, even if he is always very nice with Nathan, he was also cheating on him with his girlfriend Mary, and cheating Mary with Nathan, but above all he was cheating both of them with other non-important flings. And while at the beginning John was only having sex with women other than with Nathan, then he starts also with other boys, and then he starts doing "dirty" things with these boys once he understands Nathan is not up to the same game he is. Again I approached this side of John in a negative way, I was thinking how unfair he was with Nathan, how stupid and selfish he was... but then I started to see something different, John was trying to degrade himself, he was trying to find a way to prove he was no good, that he wasn't indeed that God gift everyone was thinking, Nathan first in line. He had to prove to Nathan he was not worthy of his love, not for him but for Nathan's good. He was so in love with Nathan, that he was ready to destroy himself for him. There is "consensual" rape on the page and non consensual sex behind the page; this novel is not pretty and cute as it could seem at first, it's dark and disturbing, and as I said, I was addicted to it like Nathan was addicted to John, but a hole was in my heart, a scaring hole from the fear I was having these two guys weren't destined to an happily ever after. But don't worry, the author managed also to scare away that thought like he managed to put it there. It will not be easy for Nathan and John, and I don't think the end of the novel is the end of their trouble, but at least they have a beginning. We will see where it will lead them, and I hope the author will share with us that.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. I'm not a fan of gay fiction and I don't usually review anything but... By dom this book intrigued me with its title, its reviews, and the blurb. I bought it and read it in 4 days; I didn't want it to end so I stretched out reading it, thats how unique and fast-moving a book it is. John's voice is so real and honest, it's scary. There are a few times where it sounds a bit naive or unrealistic in how he responds to certain situations, and there is a bit of a poor proofreading job, but otherwise I was completely captivated and in love with John, and understood perfectly why Nathan could love him to death, and John's vanity and arrogance is ultimately a bit of a facade masking his true feelings, which at times he doesn't expect or understand. I happen to love coming-of-age stories, but this is beyond beautiful at times, I couldn't get enough of either of the main characters and hated when other characters took them away from each other, that's how perfect I felt John and Nathan were for each other.Lastly, the book can be read very easily, once you read the last few pages, as a Christian allegory of mystic love; hence the second-half of the title.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Unexpected By DandyLion This book continually surprised and fascinated me. The voice of the protagonist is very strong and distinct. The sexuality is extremely frank and sometimes disturbing, just like in real life. Certainly not a conventional romance. Forces you at many points to reconsider your preconceptions about the characters. Highly recommended.

She lives with her parents and her younger sister Vik on a farm. Her mother Kath is a potter, trying to find time to create. Laura’s father, Bruce, is angry when Kath disappears into her studio, ignoring housework and other demands of family. Kath herself is angry. And then she disappears.A search fails to find any trace of Kath. Where is she? Is she dead? What has happened? Laura knows something about Kath’s disappearance, but keeps it secret. This secret becomes part of a burden of responsibility that Laura carries on her own for years.‘But how was a family meant to look, after one of them had died?’Laura grows up quickly, becoming a mother for Vik who, at five years of age, misses her mother terribly. Time passes. Vik grows up, and escapes from the farm, to a career in the city. Laura leaves too, but returns when her father becomes ill. Her own life is put on hold. Again.‘All her life, the small square of space reserved for herself was threatened, constantly under siege.’The farm has been failing for years. Bruce’s management of the land, as though it can be conquered and wrestled into submission, has resulted in the soil blowing away. Clear-felling, erosion, flood, fire and drought wreak their own havoc. And Laura? What is her future? This novel spans thirty five years, and has at least three separate aspects. First, it’s Laura’s story: her life, her choices, the consequences. Secondly, it’s about the environment we live in: how we seek to control the land, how different people relate to it and how, ultimately environment (physical and emotional) shapes us. Thirdly, it’s about the different ways in which people respond to circumstances, to change, to each other. And right at the end of the novel, in the near future, is a reminder that the city is never separate from the country.I found this novel incredibly moving, and at times uncomfortable. I found myself wondering about each of the main characters and their choices. About Laura’s capacity, sacrifice and strength. And more broadly, about the way in which we seek to impose our will – on the land, on each other. Yes, I think this is a novel I need to reread.Jennifer Cameron-Smith

Meaningful for its story as well as for everything else the story is about, like climate, identity and change. Recommended for anyone who likes a good fiction with layers of reality and subject, as well as anyone who wants or needs a dose of Aussie culture.

Well crafted and such vivid descriptions one can see the land and people inhabiting this Australian tale. I enjoyed following these very human characters through the years and seeing the interplay of their use and love of their land, impacted by life and climate events. Thought provoking on many levels.

We could tell you about the bodies. We could tell you their names, where they were found, the states they were in. We could tell you about the suspects, too, the evidence, the investigators; join a few dots, even throw you a motive.

But what would be the point? After all, you know these people. You went to school with them. We all did. So if you really knew them then, you'll already have all the answers....

By Becky Lawson I've read other books by Brookmyre - 4 in total. 2 I loved and gave 5 stars, 2 not so much. Quite Ugly One Morning and Pandaemonium are wonderful. This one, the back and forth between present day and school days kept the pace from really developing for me. There was a lot of good about it, just didn't care for the way it was written. As with his other novels, there are quite a few characters, so it's important to pay attention to them.

Sitting in USA (and been away from school environment for a couple of decades ) .. yet all the patter and antics of the school playground came flying back... a delicious twist at end as to be expected from Brookmyre's writings.

A different tale By Casey Sier Very enjoyable that; Brookmyre for once does a story without the habitual fireworks and crazy antics that characterize most of his books. Not that the story is lacking in action and certainly not in humour, but I find it has gained considerable depth in character and atmosphere. I love his standard stuff, so I wouldn't want him going over to the serious writer camp, but there is a serious threat he might just do that one day.
