Collins A special thank you, to Atria Books and NetGalley for a complimentary ARC, in exchange for an honest review. One word . . EPIC! A "deal with the devil" has never been so evil!FORTY ACRES was the most intense thriller --thought-provoking, and gripping debut novel (my pulse is still racing) - full of power and revenge. FORTY ACRES has my vote for "Thriller Debut Novel of 2014", a talented author, Dwayne Alexander Smith, has just won me over as a "fan for life."Amazing writing, brilliantly developed characters, well researched, and an astounding storyline. There is so much depth to this THRILLER, as so want to discuss, debate, and challenge the "what if's" (as I booked marked something from every chapter); however, this is one of those "ONE in a million books" you dare not say a word to spoil, or hint of anything within a review, to give away the suspense for the readers. From controversial issues of race and power, hatred, wealth, love, trust, betrayal, and secrets--it has it all.Whereas, "Devil's Advocate" raised the preposition that "winning is everything", FORTY ACRES is about "revenge and power." Several similarities -both had smart intuitive wives, devil/master, and both main characters are attorneys who get sucked into a world of mystery, power, and wealth. (Of course, Forty Acres in a "class by itself") A WINNER out of the gate!FORTY ACRES deserves an unveiling, with no hints of any sort as each and every page is just too BLOODY GOOD. You feel yourself experiencing every setting, footstep, movement and facial expression, trying to predict the next move, with details so realistic, you are holding your breath, as you swish to the next page to see what lies ahead.Martin, black attorney and main character totally ROCKS, and so fell in love with him - brilliant strategies, witty one liners, and oh the dedication of the book by the author was PRICELESS.As the author is a screen play writer, I can envision a movie based on this predicted best seller, with a cast of stars (I want a front row seat) for a total blockbuster. With a surprise at the end - one can only hope for a series to follow. "I guess, my heart can get back to normal until his next book" . . . Here's hoping it is soon! This provocative new novel is most deserving of a 5 STAR ++. Compliments to the author and publisher for an appealing front cover and overview, which drew me in immediately, and exceeded all my expectations.

By Tex Reader 3.5 of 5 stars –This is a thought provoking thriller that brings to mind such competing adages as “an eye for an eye…” & “sins of the father…” vs. “two wrongs don’t make a right” and “take the high road”. It poses a question of how do you properly redress the sins of slavery? And what scars still remain? Its a story fueled by a compelling premise seeking racial justice through revenge; and in fact, I gave it an extra ½ star for its audacious premise. After Dr. King’s assassination and riots, a black friend of mine said there would soon be a black uprising; 40 years later Obama was elected President. This novel falls somewhere in between.Upfront, due to the nature of this novel, I feel I need to identify myself as white, and for me then, what I can say is it did indeed make me think. As such, part of its appeal was to remind me of the continuing, lingering social and personal consequences of racial discrimination, abuse and injustice, and the subsequent struggle and actions people take to try and overcome that.Dwayne Alexander Smith does a good job laying the groundwork and case for his unique premise, using descriptive language, fairly well drawn characters without too much stereotyping, and a decently paced plot. I like that he included very recent happenings (e.g., the supreme court’s Voting Rights Act ruling, the Zimmerman case) to show that the issue is still with us today. And it’s good that I wasn’t sure how it would end, but ultimately Smith completed the story well.Without giving anything away, I did feel throughout that it didn’t give enough depth and stretched credibility in terms of plot, characters, choices made and actions taken. And being a psychologist myself, I think it fell a little short of portraying the real psychology, mentality, appeal and brainwashing behind what I would call a cult, its leader and followers.Overall, the story kept me engaged, wondering, and yes, squirming, a bit, which was all good.(I'm excited to have won this as a Goodreads First Read – so thanks!)

You don't get discussion like this from normal pop-fiction crime lit.I really think this novel was a success. Dwayne Alexander Smith took huge risks with this novel. The premise could so easily cause knee-jerk reactions, ranging from disbelief to offense, but I think he succeeds by never letting us think that the ideas presented are outright crazy nor morally sound. The reader is presented with a reality bent by the wills of an angry old man but can also accept that reality as a possibility.Race is obviously The Point of this novel so I can't not point it out but it's hard to know how to discuss it after this. The thing that sticks out to me so much is how little I see black writers on the shelves in the popular literature section or within the crime/mystery novel area. I know better than to think this is for lack of writers. It was really nice to read a book from the point of view of a non-white person. I know I need to do this more and venturing away from what the media recommends me to read is the best option. But that said, it was really nice to read a book that challenged my weird perceptions on characters. So often, I read a book and I picture the character in our mind, I picture a white man or woman. If the writer thought to include any characters of color, they use their race in their description or a very obvious give away (think of JK Rowling making Lee Jordan the "boy with dreadlocks" as a way to differentiate him from the white characters, surely she did the same with Cho Chang besides giving her a racist name but I can't recall), virtually making white the default mode for characters in popular books. When the main character enters a dinner party consisting of only black couples, he feels at ease. But I felt made aware of my privilege when even doing something as simple as entering a book. Most of the time the characters I know and love look like me. And that's not something important when you're used to it but it's something. This also succeeds from a thriller/crime novel point of view. It is a turn pager. The bad guys are bad but also at times sympathetic and the main character is smart and relatable. The world it creates is interesting and sad. The history it shares is also interesting and helped me recognize my ignorance on a lot of civil rights issues they don't teach in schools. Yet it never comes off as preachy or educational, but always as a story about men being men and how even the most sympathetic of men can be evil. I don't know if Mr. Smith knew this when he wrote it, but I also feel it is very feminist in some ways. The women characters are brief but strong and though they are not important in the main story thread nor appreciated by the main men characters, they are written to be so much stronger and smarter then the men they are married to. I just wish that story line was developed more.I recommend this book to thriller/crime fans but give warning to highbrow literature fans that you may not get what you seek here.

Come with Janice to Dublin, in the mid nineteen-eighties when a better future beckoned and the past was restless, whispering in the shadows for the Old Ways. Janice has grown tired of her sheltered existence in Toronto and when Aidan leads her through the veils of the Celtic Twilight, she doesn’t hesitate. In their love, Aidan, Dublin’s rising poet, sees a chance for redemption and Janice sees a chance for recognition. Sinead tells her that it is all nonsense as she keeps her head down and her eyes fixed on her own prize – a place in Ireland’s prospering future. She used to go out with Aidan, before he met Janice, so there is little she can say. And besides, she has enough to do as her parents are torn apart by the rumours of church scandals. But after a few nights in Grogan’s, where Dublin’s bohemians gather, or a day in Clonmacnoise among the ruins of Celtic Crosses, it won’t matter as the ghosts of Aidan’s mythologies take form and prey on the friends until everything is at risk. Lagan Love is a sensuous story of Love, Lust and Loss that will bring into question the cost we pay for our dreams.

With his stunning debut novel, Lagan Love, Peter Murphy is well on his way to adding his name to that impressive list.... Lagan Love takes the traditional love story and ramps it up several notches, with a supernatural twist that makes it an instant classic. She decides to use it to study abroad, in Dublin.Sinead and Aiden get along well when they are drunk, but when sober, they don't have much to talk about. Aiden is a rising poet and Sinead wants more out of life - in fact - thinks herself better than some. Sinead goes to the same school as Janice as the two become quick friends. Janice meets Aiden through Sinead, and the two quickly connect. Then there is Gwen, a married woman who has a fling on the side, with Aiden and spends her time looking for new art or artists. When she sees Janice's art, she quickly makes a deal with her and Aiden. But then things begin to turn ugly between Aiden and Janice.Old Ireland myths, a beautifully woven background, a cast of unique and adept characters set the tone for this phenomenal story of love, loss, and hunger. How much would you be willing to pay to achieve your dream? Is that cost worth the end result, even if you lose something close to you or even yourself? Peter Murphy spins a story bringing to light the darker side of Ireland and how twisted our human psych can become. With twists and turns, erotic scenes and magic, Lagan Love is a fascinating read.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Lagan Love by Peter Murphy By OSUCandace Once the pages of Peter Murphy's novel, Lagan Love, was opened I was instantly swept into Dublin, Ireland. Lagan Love centers around a group of people who are just beginning to find themselves. Aidan charges (or more aptly drunkenly stumbles) into the novel as Dublin's fresh young poet, dubbed as the voice of Ireland's conscience. Janice, a young women from Toronto, has moved to Dublin to study at the prestigious Trinity School. As Janice immerses herself in the new culture she also finds herself on a journey of self-discovery. After finding herself in a somewhat shaky relationship with Aidan, Janice decides to follow the path of becoming an artist. Mix in Gwen, Aidan's mysterious and other worldly editor, and you find yourself in the middle of Murphy's intoxicating tale of love, heart ache, and the cost of making your dreams a reality.Murphy does a fine job in painting his 1980's Ireland as a place filled with class, socioeconomic, and religious strife. It doesn't take long to see that many characters in Lagan Love are disenchanted with many of the European countries, England being at the top of the list. Many of the characters are prejudice and have no problem throwing around racial remarks involving those in other social classes, of a different faith, or from a different country. This all seemed very realistic to me. However, Murphy also showed his Dubliners as a proud people, who didn't forget history and spoke of it frequently. The characters in Lagan Love frequently spend their mornings, afternoons, and evenings in pubs drinking, smoking, gossiping, complaining, and speaking about about their times growing up. Murphy makes the pub a familiar place where everybody knows everyone and their business. The Cheers song, "Where everybody knows your name" comes to mind while following the characters from pub to pub.Religion also plays a role in Murphy's novel. While reading I definitely felt the tension between the Protestants and Catholics. Murphy does a great job in showing what turmoil in the Catholic church can do to men and women in their own homes. While I enjoyed Lagan Love, it took me a few chapters to get my footing. At times I felt there was too much history and 'sightseeing' being written about, which took away from the characters and their journey. It also took me a while to adjust to the Irish vernacular, however it did make the novel that much more realistic.I enjoyed watching the character dynamics unfold between Janice and Aidan. When Janice met Aidan she was a shy, self conscious girl. Throughout the novel she evolved into a self confident, daring women. However, Aidan stayed much the same. The novel started showing him as an unhappy, egocentric character and ended much the same. Murphy makes the case that both Janice's evolution and Aidan's stalemate could be linked to Gwen.I definitely recommend Lagan Love, Peter Murphy's first novel. I look forward to reading more literary work from him.~Candace Lybarger, Reviewer for Bookpleasures*I received Lagan Love as a complimentary book from The Fiction Studio through Bookpleasures for this review*

Wives and Daughters, by Elizabeth Gaskell

Review Novel by Elizabeth Gaskell, first published serially in the Cornhill Magazine (August 1864-January 1866) and then in book form in 1866; it was unfinished at the time of her death in November 1865. Known as her last, longest, and perhaps finest work, it concerns the interlocking fortunes of several families in the country town of Hollingford. Wives and Daughters chronicles the maturation of Molly Gibson, a sincere young woman whose widowed father, the town doctor, marries Hyacinth Kirkpatrick, a charming but petty widow and former governess in the household of Lord Cumnor. Although Molly resents her stepmother, she befriends her stepsister Cynthia, who is secretly engaged to Lord Cumnor's land agent, Mr. Preston. Molly is warmly received at the home of Squire Hamley and his disabled wife. The Hamleys' two sons are Osborne, a clever but shallow man who marries unwisely and dies young, and Roger, an honest scientist who eventually marries Molly after being engaged to Cynthia, who ultimately weds a London barrister. --The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

Review 'Wives and Daughters has plot, intrigue and romance' Guardian 'A masterpiece' - Andrew Davies

From the Back Cover Set in English society before the 1832 Reform Bill, Wives and Daughters centres on the story of youthful Molly Gibson, brought up from childhood by her father. When he remarries, a new step-sister enters Molly's quiet life - loveable, but worldly and troubling, Cynthia. The narrative traces the development of the two girls into womanhood within the gossiping and watchful society of Hollingford. Wives and Daughters is far more than a nostalgic evocation of village life; it offers an ironic critique of mid-Victorian society. 'No nineteenth-century novel contains a more devastating rejection than this of the Victorian male assumption of moral authority', writes Pam Morris in her introduction to this new edition, in which she explores the novel's main themes - the role of women, Darwinism and the concept of Englishness - and its literary and social context.

89 of 92 people found the following review helpful. ...and dream about Cynthia and my new shawl By Snork Maiden What is up with all the reviews that compare Mrs. Gaskell unfavorably to Jane Austen? Jane Austen is wonderful, but she works in miniature, and even her major characters are often one-dimensional. Who can really visualize Mr. Darcy? It is true that Mrs. Gaskell can be as satirical as Austen when she wants to be, but even her most vain or vicious characters are human beings, with complex feelings and good impulses as well as bad. And then there's the incredible sweep of this novel, the way in which Gaskell manages to portray an entire community without losing her lightness of touch. The only novel I can think of to compare this to is Eliot's Middlemarch, and I'm still not sure which I think is better. There are so many instances in which Gaskell could have taken the easy way out and didn't. Take the two pairs of characters, Molly and Cynthia and Roger and Osborne. Osborne is thought to be more brilliant than Roger; Cynthia is more beautiful and less moral than Molly. It would be so easy for Gaskell to make Cynthia the evil stepsister, and Osborne the dissolute brother you love to hate. Yet Cynthia and Osborne are both sympathetic despite their faults, and both are even more complex, more finely drawn, than Roger and Molly. There are plenty of novels in which a character exerts a fascination over everyone he/she meets, and usually the fascination is completely lost on the reader. Cynthia has this fascination, and for once it is completely convincing. We understand why Molly can't help loving Cynthia, even while Cynthia is blithely taking Roger away from her. And Cynthia is self-aware; she knows that she can't bear to have people not think well of her, and she knows this is a fault. When Molly has learned Cynthia's secret and risked her own reputation to help her, Cynthia is grateful but cannot keep herself from doing what she always does and drawing away from Molly. Mrs. Kirkpatrick is another beautifully drawn character -- she seems poised at the beginning to become the evil stepmother from a fairy tale, but she is simply weak, vain, and not very bright. She has every intention of being a wonderful stepmother, but she is too shallow and self-centered to enter into Molly's feelings or any one else's. She tries so hard to please, and her panics when she's talked herself into a corner are both funny and pathetic. I know I've said a lot about Cynthia, but I don't agree with the reviewer who said that Molly seemed one-dimensional in comparison. Molly has fewer problems; she's a pretty normal, intelligent, awkward girl with a happy childhood behind her, but that doesn't mean she's boring. She has a pretty vivid emotional life, although she doesn't always admit the source of her feelings, and she's very shrewd. I am amazed by the people who said this book needed editing or cutting down. This is probably the most nearly perfect book I have read - I do not mean by this that it is the best - and the one glaring imperfection can't be helped. I do think, though, that if it has to end prematurely at least it ends on an excellent sentence.

Engrossing domestic comedy By A Customer In her last novel, Gaskell avoided her usual urban milieu to concentrate instead on the wonderful parochial doings of a country village in the mid-Victorian period. Although she left the novel without its very last chapter before she died, this should not dissuade you from reading the novel: you'll know by the end exactly where Gaskell was going to finish the book and what would've happened to all the characters.WIVES AND DAUGHTERS is frequently compared to Austen, but it is very different; the comedy and social observation is marvelous, but there's a greater sense of despair here more akin to MIDDLEMARCH. Hyacinth is without question the single most complex and engrossing character Gaskell ever created, and despite her menadacity and her manipulativeness you can't help but feel fond of her in spite of her less attractive qualities. Her daughter Cynthia is nearly as fine a character, and the others are also topnotch. A delightful read.

A definite read if you enjoy the genre as I do By Austentatious Having read and reread Austen and the Bronte sisters, and looking to branch out to new authors while still staying in the general time period and genre, my sister recommended Wives and Daughters. I had never heard of Elizabeth Gaskell---but what a treasure to discover! My husband bought me the book for my birthday, worried that because it was an unfinished novel I would be disappointed. Hardly! I couldn't put the book down. I fell in love with all of Hollingford and its people, especially young Molly Gibson, as constant in her character as Cynthia is changeable but both equally likeable and more importantly, believable. Mrs. Gaskell was able to show us where the novel was headed or, I should say, where Molly was headed matrimonially, and though it is something to mourn that the conclusion could not be written in Mrs. Gaskell's own words, I would still recommend the read. AND the DVD which is so true to the book (Justine Waddell makes a perfect Molly), even while leaving out Molly's extended illness toward the end. Definitely one I recommend.

This time, we get four novellas ripe for our dissemination. We get "Gunsmoke", "Lodeville", "Shadow",and "Trail to Monterey". These stories appeared in Wesetern Story, Star Western, 15 Western Tales, and Adventure Magazine from 1926 to 1945. Not only do we get scintillating fiction, but also hints of broader philosphical discussions in the characters. My favorite story is the title piece, which originally had no name until it was published. "Gunsmoke", not related to the TV/radio series, tells the story of Ponchito (Jim Tenant) and his need for revenge in the process salvaging a town, his love, and his good name. Triple motivations always make for tense showdowns, don't they? This book is highly recommended. Love the cover photograph.Tim Lasiuta

Be aware before you order what I didn't know, it is actually 4 short stories (or novelettes) rather than one book. The last story is actually set among railroad workers and was not a western. That aside it was a fun quick read taking you back to typical western stories like the western movies from the 40's and 50's.

I have read various Flynn collections and had mixed reactions. GUNSMOKE, however, is a top-notch effort with four well-done stories with interesting characters and unique settings. The lead-off story is "Dead Man Deputy," an entertaining tale features Jim Tennant, a rancher thought dead who returns to seek revenge on a crooked banker and reclaim his lost love. Running from a posse with a trumped-up warrant, Shorty Burgess decides to help a mine-owner defend his mine from a double-dealing competitor in "Lodeville." "Shadow" is the nickname given George Washington Archibald Macgillicuddy, a railroad fireman whose drinking lands him in trouble. In "The Trail to Monterey," three grizzled mountain men join General Zachary Taylor fighting the Mexican Army in Texas but find even more danger from unexpected quarters.GUNSMOKE is a good sampling of Flynn's talents. The stories and characters are compelling and Flynn has a nice way with words. In "The Trail to Monterey," for example, he describes how one character "came up out of the harsh arroyo like a drifting memory." The man walks up to a house "quietly as the night's own hush" and so on. Nice touches to well-done stories. All four stories/novellas were originally published in Western pulps published in the 1920s, '30s and '40s.If you're looking for a good collection of Western stories, look no further. GUNSMOKE is a great choice. Recommended.

"It takes my keen eye no time at all to discern that Clifford is prettier than Claudia."Clifford and Claudia is powered by two remarkable characters: a twenty year old, Charles, who arrives at the door of the cozy pizza shop owned by Clifford and Claudia on a snowy Thursday night, fully unprepared for what is beyond the threshold; and Clara, a cranky old woman who is out to save mankind with a pack of Camels, a glass of scotch, and a mouth that could take the paint off a passing automobile. As their paths converge, and reality becomes a slippery demon, James Halat enfolds the reader in a world of improbable snowfalls, extraordinary childhoods, an incredibly shrinking adversary, and one unforgettable trip on the uptown local.  A story of elusive dreams, unexpected love, and unwavering persistence, Clifford and Claudia rips away the veneer of social niceties to expose the vulnerabilities that fuel the over-the-top characters in this remarkable story of one young man's savagely funny and sometimes cruel coming of age during his desperate days of life with Clifford and Claudia.

Review "James Halat, in the two books he has released, makes a very impressive center stage stance. His ability to create stories that are refreshingly unexpected places him in line with some of most established authors. Highly Recommended." - Amazon Hall of Fame Top 100 Reviewer Grady Harp   "...a page turner!... James Halat delivers exceptional characters, clever and different views of the story world as well as a rich interplay on the physical and emotional journey of Charles." - Amazon Reviewer "...constantly moving, unrelentingly challenging, bemusing, amusing, hurtful, charming..." - Goodreads Reviewer "Do you know what I love about this book? Its immediacy. The insistence of the language, the flurry of the flour and bubbling of the cheese and herbs in the kitchen, the miasma of Manhattan, the absolute eventual reality of Paterson NJ, the trueness of the characters to themselves, all the questions in my mind, things to feed my interior life, the possibility of this, the maybe of that. And that Charles is so utterly convincing, so open, so loving, so giving. This is a book you can float in with your eyes closed, long after you've finished it, safe, and sense that kind beings you can't begin to imagine are swimming and living their lives all around you, living their lives in the same water that's licking at your skin, and you're just content to know they're there. And they feel the same." - Goodreads Reviewer

By Grady Harp Author James Halat has experience from several locations of living. He was born in New Jersey, lived in New York City, and now lives in Tokyo Japan. To date he has published two books - SYNCOPATED RHYTHM and CLIFFORD AND CLAUDIA.Few authors can handle same sex stories as well as James as those who have had the pleasure of reading SYNCOPATED RHYTHM will witness. But fine as that story is, it s a novella. Now in a full-length novel he proves that he can interplay gay characters with aplomb and make his story so universally relevant that the reader can simply sit back and enjoy the entertainment. And in his novel there is entertainment aplenty! An example of his technique of placing italicized asides - a method of reflection that accentuates the flow of the story without disrupting it - James writes (for instance): `People stay in to keep warm. And dry. Feet up in front of the fireplace, hold a cocktail, a Rob Roy or a Vodka Martini, read a book or magazine, or a newspaper. Workaholics attach to their phones, pace back and forth, as small children vye for attention. The neighborhood busybody places a chair by the window and pulls back the curtain just enough... The delivery boy arrives. Newspapers fold up. Handsets return to their cradles. A curtain snaps back into position. Pizza boxes open up, release the sweet aromas of Clifford's most delectable of pizza pies. The golden crusts, the tangy tomatoes, the bubbling cheeses, the simmering of garlics and oreganos. A big tip for the delivery boy. And off into the night he goes.' Captured `ordinary' moments like these are like taking a sip of tea as the reading progresses.James offers a fine summary of this fascinating story: `Clifford and Claudia is powered by two remarkable characters: a young dreamer and oddball traveler, Charles, whose embarks on a journey that brings him to a cozy pizza shop owned by Clifford and Claudia; and a talkative, cranky old woman called Clara-Belle, who is out to save mankind equipped with a pack of Camels, a glass of scotch, and a mouth that could take the paint off a passing automobile. As their paths become irrevocably entangled, Charles finds himself falling in love with the delightful Mr. Chips, only to have that love brutally ripped from him in the brief moments of a senseless act. He enters a world where dreams are denied, happiness is destroyed, and the only way to escape from this nightmare is to untangle himself from what cannot be untangled. We follow Charles in his heroic and at times bizarre attempts to weather, among other things, a fabricated childhood, improbable snowfalls, a shrinking adversary, and a train ride to end all train rides in his remarkable struggle to reclaim what is rightfully his. And through it all, not once does Charles take his eye off the prize in this savagely funny portrait of a young man's coming of age during his desperate days of life with Clifford and Claudia.' And to add more would be a spoiler.James Halat, in the two books he has released, make s very impressive center stage stance. His ability to create stories that are refreshingly unexpected places him in line with some of most established authors. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, September 15

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Warm,Wonderful, and Quirky By Ellen Fitzpatrick I dearly love to be knocked out of my expectations!I was fortunate enough to get a copy of this constantly moving, unrelentingly challenging, bemusing, amusing, hurtful, charming novel as a special offer for my Kindle, just when I needed a break. And what an enjoyable book it is. It deserves your full attention, it demands your full attention. It's not a lightweight bit of fluff, it's too human (?) to be that.Did Charles come from where he said he did? I don't know. Was the family he ended up with who they seemed to be? I don't know. But Charles is as convincing a character as I've met in a long time, there's never a moment when he's weakly portrayed, when the author wasn't living in his skin so that we could care about Charles, love with him, laugh with him, be in pain with him. When somebody else has read it, I'd love to talk about whether an alien needs to be an alien, or everybody we meet is an alien if we're going to be honest about it. The face we wake up with and look at in the bathroom mirror every morning is an alien, for that matter. And we can talk about whether he was off-planet or from a wrinkle in time. There's enough to tantalize, but not enough to answer. There are some wonderful, almost throw away, bits of "otherness," like a hot dog vendor, like a bottle floating in the Hudson, a bottle of ... nope, spoiler. The same is true of the other characters, Claudia, Clifford, Cliffie, and, oh, Clara! I love Clara. I wish I had Clara in my life. I miss her. Strong, believable, multifaceted, all of them. Those of you who read my reviews know that I don't do spoilers. All I can tell you is that this was one wonderful ride of the imagination and the heart. It took me a while to let go of reality, but what is reality, truthfully, but what we expect? What is reality but more of the same? All right, one spoiler. Know a great pizza shop? Not good, great. Put their number on speed dial. You're going to need it once or twice...EDIT: I always edit. Do you know what I love about this book? By CarolineS Clifford and Claudia: A Novel by James Halat is James Halat’s second novel and it is a page turner! From the first chapter, you will be hooked by Charles’s entrance (and I won’t add in more here as you need to read it) and his introduction to Clifford and Claudia.James Halat delivers exceptional characters, clever and different views of the story world as well as a rich interplay on the physical and emotional journey of Charles. The sections of italics add a deeper view of the scene and add a richness to the storyline. Those who have reviewed this book before give a detailed summary of the plot. What I can say, without doubt, is this book will hook you in to the last page.I am so pleased I found Clifford and Claudia and look forward to reading more from James Halat. It is a fabulous read that I recommend to you.

A Small Country about to Vanish, by Victoria Avilan

Review Lindsey Gumb, Instructional Technology LibrarianA Small Country About to Vanish by Victoria Avilan. . . a beautiful novel set in Israel, depicting the very real daily struggles that define what it means to be human: broken friendships, cheating spouses, financial struggles and childrearing.  In addition, the characters in this book also live under the constant threat of suicide bombers and staunch religious conflict, (and) sending their children off to protect the Israeli borders.  The two main characters, Shelli and Rona, alternate sharing their points of views on how their childhood relationship with one another both destroyed and liberated their notions of self-worth and identity.  Avilan's writing is crisp and illustrative, and engaging on multiple levels.  Definitely recommended!Avilan hits top marks for all criteria . . . the book is a compelling study in conflicted loves--of self, of another, of a country. The thoughtful pace and vivid setting and characters serve to celebrate a masterful writing style. Set in Israel and California, the story follows childhood sweethearts to the conclusions hinted at, and publicly denied, as one woman makes a "Sophie's choice" of impossible alternatives, chilling revelations and heart-rending decisions that will change her personal geographies of the soul and spirit in large ways.

From the Author One of my reviewers wrote, "Usually I avoid stories about the middle east because of all the constant, never-ending political drama. I walk away (from this book) with a genuine open mind." As a writer, this is my greatest achievment. The Middle East flows feverishly in my veins. I've been asked repeatedly about my growing up in that hot and explosive place called Israel. "A Small Country about to Vanish" is a love letter to my country and my attempt to answer some questions from a distance of worlds away, years away. My home is now Los Angeles. My homeland is always Israel. I still maintain close ties with family and friends who live and struggle there. The characters and the events are my mind's creation, but this novel is my truth.I studied fiction writing in the UCLA extension, including the UCLA Writers' Program's Master Sequence with famous Australian writing guru Claire (McNab) Carmichael.author's website: vicavilan.comemail: victoria@vicavilan.comfacebook:Victoria Avilan Author

I figured it would be deep and dark. HOWEVER, I know and am impressed by Ms Avilan and her book ‘The Art of Peeling an Orange’ was extraordinary so knew this would be a quality read.I was very, very pleased. There was some dark an d heavy parts but they truly belonged in the story. They helped to make this novel even more fantastic. This tale was thoughtful, emotional, frightening and the ending a surprising and really a new beginning in many ways. The story started with Shelli's POV but after a bitter betrayal it then focused mostly on Rona's life. Both characters were well written and very easy to sympathize and identify with. I would have liked to know more of Shelli went through in the years after after Rona broke her heart, but there were a few hints. I do get the pleasure of imagining her story in my head. This story was incredibly well written, it was...like a hearty stew on a bitter cold winters night. It fed my heart and mind. And like the water of a clear, babbling stream on a summers day it soothed my soul as things that could cause pain and horror were handled with kid gloves. This saga really opened my eyes about so many things I never gave much thought to but it was good to have this knowledge.I suggest you set aside a few hours to read this novel. I inhaled every word and could not bear to set it down even long enough to feed my creatures. My partner had to scrounge for her supper because I was so immersed, I totally forgot about food and almost everything else.I was blown away. Poor choice of words as you will see, perhaps I should have said dazzled by both of Ms Avilan's books and am waiting with baited breath for the next one.*DISCLAIMER: There is some sex in the book but it is a VERY small part of the book. While Ms. Avilan is a lesbian, this book has a a male/female sex scene and hints at lesbianism.

Another awesome page turner by Avilan By jag144 I wasn't sure about this one because the cover is kind of boring and misleading here but I read the art of peeling an orange by the same author and so loved it I gave this new one a chance. I'm happy I did. Unlike its cover this story is very colorful. The sex scenes are shocking but fit well with the context. It took me one night to read this page turner!Sent from my iPhone

This book gives a shocking picture of the middle east and especially of life in Israel. I felt like I knew the characters and I can better understand what the big conflict is about. Like Avilan's first book this one is also unusual, but in different ways.

Harrowing, haunting and brilliant By JT Ultimato Against the fascinating 1970s backdrop of NYC (and Patty Hearst as Tanya!), a young woman enters a psychiatric hospital to delve into the depths of her complex past and try to piece together a new, and stronger self. The writer is both poetic and searing, and the emotions all ring exquisitely true. So gripping, I ordered the author's first novel, Edges, immediately. This is both an important book about the nature of madness, the family bonds that nurture and torture us, and the life of both a city and an individual young woman.Just fabulous.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A Writer's Path By Carolyn Howard-Johnson Some might say all writers of fiction are a bit crazy. The statement may hold some truth if we note how much we like to follow the creative paths of fellow writers. I admit to being one of those.Leora Skolkin-Smith's "Hystera" does not disappoint on that count. But it offers so much more.Like most literary novels, it reads as if details are strongly influenced by real memories. Real as they feel, the narrator has committed herself to a psychiatric ward, so she is not a reliable source for judging reality. The lush, and somehow still subtle allusions to sex and body and her own past experiences, leave us not quite sure what conclusions the author intended the reader to make. Even an occasional syntax oddity ("Helen never explained why she stopped going back to her old house in Jerusalem, taking Lilly with her, but only that she could no longer recognize the places of her youth there anymore by 1960."), leaves us with uncertainty, similar--surely--to what the protagonist is going through.Even descriptions about the protagonist's mother's preoccupation with the ancient craft of book binding is imbued with mystery. The subjects of this binding are written in ancient Hebrew and Aramaic texts and "Alchemical symbols" are the subjects this refurbishing is intended to preserve. At its root, "Hystera" is a story about shame, shame that lurks in the recesses of our psyches, shame imposed on us by parents, culture, and ourselves. A Universal Shame. Puritannical as well as Hebraic. Guilt no one generation, race, or religion can lay claim to.I loved this book because it was about a writer, of course. But I also loved it because of the writing itself--the amazing techniques that can be observed--learned from--if the reader doesn't get too caught up in the forward motion of the story and the tone of the book not to pay attention.----The reviewer is a multi award-winning writer of fiction and poetry.

By ittybit There aren't enough stars in the ink blue sky to do justice to "Hystera" and her author Leora Skolkin-Smith.I've never known an author who was able to dig so deeply and lay bare the most intimate truths about being a woman and the truth about psychological torture - the torturing of one's own mind and soul by ones self, as well as the torture inflicted knowingly or unknowingly or both, by another. The author's words do this with no melodrama, no pointing of fingers at others, or any 'poor poor pitiful me'. Leora Skolkin-Smith and Hystera have touched the deepest inner me.I have never read such a courageous and "I'm going to tell the truth no matter who or what people may say" work like this ever before. What Skolkin-Smith writes about in "Hystera" needs to be read and understood.I've never read anything so raw and oh so from the bulb honest before about anyone or any issue. What lessons the author and "Hystera" teach us through words without force... What gifts this author has already given me and will be giving those who read this book...With her novel "Hystera" Skolkin-Smith has dared and risked everything inside herself to claim and speak her own truths for herself, and for her readers. What she writes about and how she writes makes her easy prey for reviewers and readers. Here's why: Reading "Hystera" takes the reader on a journey to the very depths of what we all are at our core. Taking that journey is not easy or comfortable.Reading this author's words feel so viscerally real. I felt I was inside her heart and mind seeing and feeling a virtual stream of consciousness outpouring of thoughts, emotions, and writing. I believe this takes us, her readers, to a place inside ourselves where our souls can be stripped of pretense, IF we as readers choose NOT to take the easy way out, but rather give all of ourselves to this journey. And reading "Hystera" is every bit as personal a journey as one can take, that will feel and mean different things to each reader. Fully taking the journey that is "Hystera" is nothing less than opening ourselves up to ourselves, to the deep bowels of self- scrutiny that as readers we can CHOOSE to examine and expose, no matter the reaction or judgement on the part of anyone else, including ourselves.Leora Skolin-Smith has written a book that I believe can literally change people's lives. She and "Hystera", who are one,Hystera have given readers an opportunity to understand and to be understood, and to forgive and to be forgiven.Thank you Leora Skolkin-Smith! Thank you!

Illustrated with 10 unique illustrations. In finishing the correction of the last proofs of this sketch, I perceive that some of those who read it may suppose that I planned to write a deliberate eulogy of Theodore Roosevelt. This is not true. I knew him for forty years, but I never followed his political leadership. Our political differences, however, never lessened our personal friendship. Sometimes long intervals elapsed between our meetings, but when we met it was always with the same intimacy, and when we wrote it was with the same candor. I count it fortunate for me that during the last ten years of his life, I was thrown more with Roosevelt than during all the earlier period; and so I was able to observe him, to know his motives, and to study his character during the chief crises of his later career, when what he thought and did became an integral part of the development of the United States. After the outbreak of the World War, in 1914, he and I thought alike, and if I mistake not, this closing phase of his life will come more and more to be revered by his countrymen as an example of the highest patriotism and courage. Regardless of popular lukewarmness at the start, and of persistent official thwarting throughout, he roused the conscience of the nation to a sense of its duty and of its honor. What gratitude can repay one who rouses the con science of a nation? Roosevelt sacrificed his life for patriotism as surely as if he had died leading a charge in the Battle of the Marne. The Great War has thrown all that went before it out of perspective. We can never see the events of the preceding half-century in the same light in which we saw them when they were fresh. Instinctively we appraise them, and the men through whom they came to pass, by their relation to the catastrophe. Did they lead up to it consciously or un consciously? And as we judge the outcome of the war, our views of men take on changed complexions. The war, as it appears now, was the culmination of three different world-movements; it destroyed the attempt of German Imperialism to conquer the world and to rivet upon it a Prussian military despotism. Next, it set up Democracy as the ideal for all peoples to live by. Finally, it revealed that the economic, industrial, social, and moral concerns of men are deeper than the political. When I came to review Roosevelt's career consecutively, for the purpose of this biography, I saw that many of his acts and policies, which had been misunderstood or misjudged at the time, were all the inevitable expressions of the principle which was the master-motive of his life. What we had imagined to be shrewd devices for winning a partisan advantage, or for overthrowing a political adversary, or for gratifying his personal ambition, had a nobler source. I do not mean to imply that Roosevelt, who was a most adroit politician, did not employ with terrific effect the means accepted as honorable in political fighting. So did Abraham Lincoln, who also, as a great Opportunist, was both a powerful and a shrewd political fighter, but pledged to Righteousness. It seems now tragic, but inevitable, that Roosevelt, after beginning and carrying forward the war for the reconciliation between Capital and Labor, should have been sacrificed by the Republican Machine, for that Machine was a special organ of Capital, by which Capital made and administered the laws of the States and of the Nation. But Roosevelt's struggle was not in vain; before he died, many of those who worked for his downfall in 1912 were looking up to him as the natural leader of the country, in the new dangers which encompassed it. "Had he lived," said a very eminent man who had done more than any other to defeat him, "he would have been the unanimous candidate of the Republicans in 1920."

Theodore Roosevelt by William Roscoe Thayer By Arizona AJR Several years ago, browsing through stacks of used books in an Idaho bookstore, I came across Theodore Roosevelt, An Intimate Biography, by William Roscoe Thayer, Houghton Mifflin Company, 1919. Once I started to read this book, I couldn't put it down. What makes this biography unique is that the author was an intimate friend who never voted for him or for any Republican candidate! William Roscoe Thayer rarely agreed with Republican policy, and frequently debated the political issues with Roosevelt, although they became closer in political thought and opinion after 1914.It is refreshing to study the point of view of one of Roosevelt's contemporaries, instead of solely relying on the interpretations of authors who are so far removed from historical events. I heartily agree with Thayer's statement: "A contemporary can never judge as the historian a hundred years after the fact judges, but the contemporary view also has it's place, and it may be really nearer to the living truth than is the conclusion formed when the past is cold and remote and the actors are dead long ago. So a friend's outlined portrait, though obviously not impartial, must be nearer the truth than an enemy's can be - for the enemy is not impartial either. We have fallen too much into the habit of imagining that only hostile critics tell the truth."I highly recommend this book as a much needed "balance" in one's study of Theodore Roosevelt's life, political thought, and what made him "tick."

The author knew Teddy Roosevelt for 40 years so he had intimate knowledge of our 26th President. The biography is history itself as it was written nearly 90 years ago. The verbiage was of a different time with words not written or spoken in this day and age. Before I read any more biographies, I will find those written in a different time than those written today. I felt like I was sitting with a great story teller speaking of his personal knowledge of a great man.

If there ever was an American president you could look up Teddy is one. A great man. Just, but a damn tough negotiator. Someone who overcame a handicap as a young child. It's all here in this book. Reading this biography is uplifting. Enjoy!

Review CRITICAL ACCLAIM FOR THE JOHN PICKETT MYSTERIES "It's a pleasure to spend some time again with John Pickett and his ladylove in their latest adventure, and to watch as they solve another baffling case. England's Regency period comes to life in this enjoyable series." --Carola Dunn, author of the Daisy Dalrymple mysteries "A true treat for historical mystery fans! A vivid taste of Regency England, with a charming sense of history wrapped up in sparkling dialogue and an intriguing puzzle. I can't wait to see what happens in the next John Pickett mystery " --Amanda Carmack, author of Murder at Hatfield House "

From the Inside Flap In disgrace with her aristocratic in-laws, recently widowed Lady Fieldhurst is exiled to Scotland with her three young nephews in tow. On impulse, she and the boys decide to stay at an isolated seaside inn under an assumed name, where they can enjoy a holiday far away from the scandal that still plagues the family. But trouble soon finds them when the boys discover an unconscious woman on the beach--a woman who bears a startling resemblance to the local laird's daughter, missing and presumed dead for the last fifteen years. Uncertain whether to welcome her as a returning prodigal or denounce her as a fraud, Angus Kirkbride sends to London for a Bow Street runner--which presents a dilemma for Lady Fieldhurst, since she has chosen to call herself Mrs. Pickett after the handsome young man who saved her from hanging for the murder of her husband.Meanwhile John Pickett, hopelessly pining for Lady Fieldhurst, resolves to forget her by marrying another. When magistrate Patrick Colquhoun receives Kirkbride's summons, he packs Pickett off to Scotland before his most junior runner can do anything rash.Upon his arrival, Pickett is surprised (though not at all displeased) to discover that he has acquired a "wife" in the person of Lady Fieldhurst. But when Angus Kirkbride dies only hours after announcing his intention of changing his will in his daughter's favor, "Mr. and Mrs. Pickett" must join forces to discover the truth about a family reunion suddenly turned deadly.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. I Love John Pickett! By Linda Banche John Pickett is back!If you’re like me, you’ve been waiting for Sheri Cobb South's Regency mystery FAMILY PLOT, the continuing story of the mutual attraction between Bow Street Runner John Pickett and the widowed Julia, Lady Fieldhurst. The Fieldhursts have banished Julia to Scotland because of the unwanted attention her husband’s murder has attracted, and also because she pays too much attention to a certain Bow Street Runner. As long as they’re banishing her, they use her as an escort and babysitter for the current Lord Fieldhurst’s sons. En route to the nobleman’s estate, they take a detour to the coast, and to prevent anyone from tracing them, Julia assumes the name Mrs. Pickett.Things heat up when a woman washes ashore, one who professes she’s the long-lost daughter of a prominent local family. Things heat up more when the family hires John Pickett to investigate the woman’s story. Not only does he find secrets, but also a “wife” he didn’t know he had, and one he desperately wants to claim.Ms. South has crafted a fine Regency, full of the language and social customs of the time, the continuing love interest of John and Julia, and a mystery convoluted enough to satisfy die-hard fans of the genre. But the best part of the novel is the dance between John and Julia as they try to deny their increasing feelings for each other. Who says you need sex in a story? I much prefer the slow burn between John and Julia.I love John Pickett. He’s the best type of hero: honorable, competent, intelligent, kind, self-made. And he’s young and gorgeous, too, which certainly doesn’t hurt. :) He’s also madly in love with Julia, and she with him, but the social gulf which separates a Bow Street Runner, son of a pickpocket, from a well-born widow of a baron, is too vast for them to bridge. Or is it? Will true love triumph?Julia shows herself to be more than just a pretty face. Bullied by her husband’s family and the customs of the time, she questions why she lets this happen. Her transformation is at hand, and by the finale she proves herself a woman to be reckoned with. My kind of heroine. If you’re rooting for John and Julia, you’ll adore the end! But don’t peek. Save the surprise for the last. You’ll be glad you did.ARC provided by the author

By OLT This review is really for not only this book but also the first two in the series, starting with In Milady's Chamber and followed by A Dead Bore. I'd suggest reading them in order because, although the mysteries in each are stand-alones, the relationship between the two main characters, low-born 24-year-old Bow Street runner John Pickett and 26-year-old Julia, Lady Fieldhurst, widow in the peerage, is continually evolving and it's best to start at the beginning, when they first meet as Pickett investigates the murder of Lady Fieldhurst's husband and Julia is one of the main suspects. This third entry has Julia off to Scotland with her three nephews, in the hopes of tamping down all the scandal around the Fieldhursts. (There's murder, bigamy and illegitimacy to gossip about, as you'll learn from the first two books.) "Out of sight/out of mind" is the hope. But Julia finds herself involved in another mystery and murder and John Pickett is once again sent to investigate. He and Julia have become quite a good investigative duo and they combine their wits once again here in Scotland. The mystery involves the long-lost daughter of a family, her three cousins, one of them illegitimate, romantic entanglements, inheritances and wills and a possible pretender to the position of long-lost daughter. When the father/uncle dies, murder is suspected and the possible murderer could be one of many of the family members. This and the other two are cozy mysteries set during the early 1800s, very clean and wholesome, with a very low-key romance and Sheri Cobb South's pleasant, humorous writing style. I chose them to read based on my enjoyment of two of her Regencies, The Weaver Takes a Wife and Brighton Honeymoon. They are the delightful tales of the romance and marriage of a rich but undereducated businessman and the daughter of a duke. Those two I highly recommend.

John's and Julia's Relationship Progresses As They Investigate Their Third Murder By Judge Tabor This is the third full book featuring our steady and honorable young hero, John Pickett, Bow Street Runner, and the woman with whom he's become fascinated - Lady Julia Fieldhurst. In this book, we find John rethinking his life even as he is considering marrying Lucy, the little gal who is his erstwhile friend who is also a prostitute. Not that John has partaken of her services - no, indeed. In fact, John has lived a life of celibacy. It's just that he is losing hope of ever having the one lady who consumes his mind and heart - the lovely Julia, who is so far above his reach he figures why not marry Lucy? It would rescue her from the life she's living and so on and so forth. When he tells his mentor and boss, Magistrate Patrick Colquhoun, what he's thinking, Colquohoun figures out the best thing for John is to get him out of Dodge for awhile. This works out great, for indeed - there is a mystery to solve in Scotland and Colquohoun thinks to get in some fishing while he heads up the investigation with John working in the background. But... Lady Fieldhurst just happens to be in Scotland also - on a little vacation with her three nephews - the Bertram boys, who have recently learned they're illegitimate - a very tough road to hoe for the eldest, Harold. Julia's involved up to her pretty neck in the mysterious goings on in Scotland, which results in setting Julia and John up for another opportunity to work together even as their "more than friends" relationship further deepens. In fact, John isn't aware that Julia, wanting to remain incognito, registered at the local inn under the name Mrs. Pickett - never imagining in her wildest dreams that John would show up in Scotland to register at the same inn. When John finds out she has temporarily taken his name, it doesn't take much for his mind to go off in several different directions, especially since she's continually on his mind. But, now they must indeed pretend to be married, which adds considerably to the juice within the storyline. Yes, we even get treated to a bit of passionate kissing between the two which really sets John's blood pounding.**Spoilerish** Sooo... of course the mystery is eventually solved, even as we are privy to the furtherance of John's and Julia's relationship. But, neither John nor Julia actually realize the full implications of their pretending to be married and actually stating the fact to others in a public manner. Remember, it is Scotland. Can't wait until the next book to find out Julia's response once she realizes she might have accidentally married John by claiming to be his wife.Other books in this series:Pickpocket's Apprentice, In Milady's Chamber (John Pickett Mysteries Book 1), A Dead Bore (John Pickett Mysteries Book 2), Family Plot (John Pickett Mysteries Book 3)
