Review Lindsey Gumb, Instructional Technology LibrarianA Small Country About to Vanish by Victoria Avilan. . . a beautiful novel set in Israel, depicting the very real daily struggles that define what it means to be human: broken friendships, cheating spouses, financial struggles and childrearing.  In addition, the characters in this book also live under the constant threat of suicide bombers and staunch religious conflict, (and) sending their children off to protect the Israeli borders.  The two main characters, Shelli and Rona, alternate sharing their points of views on how their childhood relationship with one another both destroyed and liberated their notions of self-worth and identity.  Avilan's writing is crisp and illustrative, and engaging on multiple levels.  Definitely recommended!Avilan hits top marks for all criteria . . . the book is a compelling study in conflicted loves--of self, of another, of a country. The thoughtful pace and vivid setting and characters serve to celebrate a masterful writing style. Set in Israel and California, the story follows childhood sweethearts to the conclusions hinted at, and publicly denied, as one woman makes a "Sophie's choice" of impossible alternatives, chilling revelations and heart-rending decisions that will change her personal geographies of the soul and spirit in large ways.

From the Author One of my reviewers wrote, "Usually I avoid stories about the middle east because of all the constant, never-ending political drama. I walk away (from this book) with a genuine open mind." As a writer, this is my greatest achievment. The Middle East flows feverishly in my veins. I've been asked repeatedly about my growing up in that hot and explosive place called Israel. "A Small Country about to Vanish" is a love letter to my country and my attempt to answer some questions from a distance of worlds away, years away. My home is now Los Angeles. My homeland is always Israel. I still maintain close ties with family and friends who live and struggle there. The characters and the events are my mind's creation, but this novel is my truth.I studied fiction writing in the UCLA extension, including the UCLA Writers' Program's Master Sequence with famous Australian writing guru Claire (McNab) Carmichael.author's website: vicavilan.comemail: victoria@vicavilan.comfacebook:Victoria Avilan Author

I figured it would be deep and dark. HOWEVER, I know and am impressed by Ms Avilan and her book ‘The Art of Peeling an Orange’ was extraordinary so knew this would be a quality read.I was very, very pleased. There was some dark an d heavy parts but they truly belonged in the story. They helped to make this novel even more fantastic. This tale was thoughtful, emotional, frightening and the ending a surprising and really a new beginning in many ways. The story started with Shelli's POV but after a bitter betrayal it then focused mostly on Rona's life. Both characters were well written and very easy to sympathize and identify with. I would have liked to know more of Shelli went through in the years after after Rona broke her heart, but there were a few hints. I do get the pleasure of imagining her story in my head. This story was incredibly well written, it was...like a hearty stew on a bitter cold winters night. It fed my heart and mind. And like the water of a clear, babbling stream on a summers day it soothed my soul as things that could cause pain and horror were handled with kid gloves. This saga really opened my eyes about so many things I never gave much thought to but it was good to have this knowledge.I suggest you set aside a few hours to read this novel. I inhaled every word and could not bear to set it down even long enough to feed my creatures. My partner had to scrounge for her supper because I was so immersed, I totally forgot about food and almost everything else.I was blown away. Poor choice of words as you will see, perhaps I should have said dazzled by both of Ms Avilan's books and am waiting with baited breath for the next one.*DISCLAIMER: There is some sex in the book but it is a VERY small part of the book. While Ms. Avilan is a lesbian, this book has a a male/female sex scene and hints at lesbianism.

Another awesome page turner by Avilan By jag144 I wasn't sure about this one because the cover is kind of boring and misleading here but I read the art of peeling an orange by the same author and so loved it I gave this new one a chance. I'm happy I did. Unlike its cover this story is very colorful. The sex scenes are shocking but fit well with the context. It took me one night to read this page turner!Sent from my iPhone

This book gives a shocking picture of the middle east and especially of life in Israel. I felt like I knew the characters and I can better understand what the big conflict is about. Like Avilan's first book this one is also unusual, but in different ways.
