By Stephanie Eglantina Reynoso Pimentel I had to do an exposition abut Immanuel Kant for one of my college courses, and I am not exaggerating when I say that my Professor said that my explanation of his ideas were the best he had ever heard! All thanks to this book! Even though I absolutely love philosophy I find that some concepts are harder for me to understand then others. This edition however explained everything in a way that I was fully able to understand right away! I definitely recommend it!

A sharply observed debut novel that signals a significant voice in contemporary fiction, The Heart of the Order follows a ballplayer as he takes time to mend—physically and emotionally—from a spectacular injury.

Blake Alexander—“Xandy” to his teammates and fans—is the starting leftfielder for the Carolina Birds of the National League South, until a knee injury in Cincinnati leaves him facing a summer of rehab and a career in doubt. Eager to occupy himself around game time, Xandy trades his glove for an Acer laptop, and each night before first pitch, he settles into a lounger behind his borrowed house to write. What emerges from Xandy’s patio sessions is a series of reflections on the game he loves and beyond—from losing streaks to bullpen phones to his beguiling physical therapist, Jenn, who (like a third base coach) keeps giving him signs he can’t quite read. A winning narrator, with an observational style honed over years spent judging the spin on fly balls, Xandy shines as a fresh and memorable voice in American fiction.

By jean-andre rougeot Excellent summer read.Theo Schell is clearly a very gifted writer and a strong story teller. If you like baseball, you will love this book.I am personally not a big fan of baseball but I really enjoyed this book. It flows leisurely like a warm afternoon of punting on the Oxford river, highly pleasurable with a hint of mischeavious. As the book unfolded, I found myself rooting more and more for Xandy as he half philosophizes and half day dreams through his rehab. I certainly look forward to more books from this young and talented writer.

I can't imagine anyone, ball player or not, talking and thinking like this character does. And if you expect an ending, good, bad or otherwise, you will be very disappointed.

26 of 26 people found the following review helpful. I'm all for second chance stories, and this was a great one. By Joli This Heart of Mine is the first book by Brenda Novak that I've read and it certainly will not be the last. The synopsis immediately caught my attention - oh the drama and the angst and a story about second chances, but I was concerned about starting this book since it is the 8th book of an existing series. I was worried that there would be too many characters and an existing story line that I wouldn't know what was going on and there would be plot holes left unanswered. All of this worrying was completely unnecessary, because This Heart of Mine can be read as a stand-alone.I appreciated the list of characters at the beginning of the book which helped explain some of the connections between the characters - and there are a lot of them. I liked how they appeared throughout the book and I got just enough of their back story that I became interested in them and wanted to know their individual stories too. This is one of the main reasons I'll check out the backlist of this series.I loved reading about Phoenix and Riley and discovering everything that pulled them apart and experiencing everything that brought them back together. It was a slow road as they both worked to rebuild the trust that had been lost and overcome the devastation of the past. I'm all for second chance stories, and this was a great one. Some of my favorite parts were the interactions between Riley and his son, Jacob. Their relationship was more of a friendship than father and son evident in the way the communicated with each other - and there was an immense level of respect for each other. And I loved the interactions with Jacob and Phoenix just as much. I looked forward to reading those parts of the book. There were moments when I found myself wishing that I knew more about Phoenix and Riley as teenagers. I got a lot of their history in This Heart of Mine and could imagine what they were like as teenagers, but I would love to read their story as 17 and 18 year olds and when they first met and got together. I would definitely read a YA book about them. Talk about some angst. Who knows, this may be in a Whiskey Creek book already. I'll just have to go back and read them to find out.I'm so glad that I've discovered a new-to-me author whose books I want to read. I'm looking forward to getting to know the rest of the people from Whiskey Creek.

I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is a powerful story of love, forgiveness, second chances, and redemption. After reading the first chapter, my heart was already breaking for Phoenix, a woman who has endured so much in her life and must now start all over again with little or nothing in a very hostile environment. But, Phoenix is more than willing to face the hostility if it means she might be able to forge a relationship with her son, Jake. When Phoenix was eighteen, she was accused of murdering a popular student by running her down with her car. She was tried, convicted, and sent to prison. Now after sixteen years in prison, Phoenix has returned to her hometown, a place that never embraced her due to her mother's issues, which included morbid obesity and hoarding. Sixteen years ago, Riley Stinson abruptly broke things off with Phoenix and she did not take the breakup well. When she is convicted of murder it is revealed she was pregnant. So, Riley became the sole provider for his son and Phoenix was never given any sort of access to him in all these years. But now that she is free, she and Jake are going to meet for the first time and of course his father will be there with him. This scene sets the tone for the book and I have to say, I had a huge lump in my throat as I witnessed the long overdue reunion of a mother and son robbed of sixteen vital years with one another. While Jake seems ready to give Phoenix a chance, Riley is uncertain. Did she really intentionally murder a girl out of jealously over him? Or was it like Phoenix always claimed- that the passenger in the car that day was the responsible party? The characters in this book are so well drawn I felt like I was living the story along side them. This is a very emotional story, but also a truly uplifting one as well. Phoenix has nothing but her self respect and pride. I mean nothing. The trailer she lives in is over run with her mother's junk, she has hardly any money, she lives with a mentally and physically disabled parent who is one of the most negative people in the world, but Phoenix is one resilient woman and the one thing that drives her is the love a mother has for her child.Phoenix faces an epic battle from the start, not just with her lack of funds and her mother, but also, the family of the girl Phoenix is accused of murdering is absolutely outraged she has moved back and proceeds to make her life miserable. Riley's parents are also quite outspoken about their belief in Phoenix's guilt and urge Riley to avoid getting involved with her again. There were two characters in the book that override all that negativity, hostility, and who set an example others should have followed. One was Riley's friend Kyle who has an open mind toward Phoenix and guilty or not, the way he saw it was that she had paid her debt. So, he begins to take an interest in her.The other character was Jake. What a great kid. When most teens would have died of embarrassment if they had to deal with a parent who was an accused murder, Jake is desperate to make a connection with his mom and so his open mind and heart paves the way, along with Kyle's example, for Riley to admit he may have misjudged Phoenix, may have made a big mistake in keeping Jake away from her, and most importantly, he realizes he never fell out of love with her.But convincing Phoenix of that is going to be hard sell. The one thing that would really help them all is the slight possibility there's a way to prove Phoenix was innocent.Phoenix is an inspiration, a woman who will not look back in bitterness, but a person who will cherish her new found peace, will embrace hope, and will relish every moment she has with Riley and her son. This story has many layers and makes some thought provoking points, some of which were familial interference, judging people by their circumstances, forgiveness, positive thinking over negative thinking, and leading by example. Some may roll their eyes here, but I also thought the story confirmed my absolute belief in transcending power of love- whether it was parent-child, friendship or romantic love- that was the force that overpowered the haters, the doubters, and led to the the truth, to forgiveness, peace, hope, and healing.Excellent read!

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. The Best Yet! By Kerry Croucier I have read many of the novels in Brenda Novak's Whiskey Creek series, and really loved them. That said, I think "This Heart of Mine" is the absolute best in the series and that is saying a whole lot. It ran me through so many emotions, I was in tears before the end of chapter 4. A wonderful story of redemption and second chances, I started it and couldn't put it down until I finished, despite needing to get other things done. I just couldn't tear myself away.Phoenix Fuller is back in Whiskey Creek after 17 years in prison. She never thought to go anywhere else, despite her past. Her goal now is to get to know her son before he goes off to college and to take care of her Mom,while trying to make a life for herself in a town full of people who don't want her there.Phoenix doesn't expect much from anyone, especially Riley Stinson, her ex and her son's father. All she asks is that he give her a chance with her son. Riley's feelings about Phoenix have been colored by years of his parents and everyone around him telling him how bad she was. He is has never taken Jacob to see his mother, and asked her to stay away. Now that she is here, he finds his perceptions changing, especially when his best friend decides that maybe Phoenix deserves a break. The development of these characters was amazing. Novak pulled me into the story and didn't let me go. Phoenix was an amazingly strong woman who deserved so much more than she got, and is so grateful for what little she has. Riley is a nice guy and, though he had misgivings, he gave Phoenix a chance. When he realized that his son needed his mother, he also started to realize he had spent to much time listening to others instead of believing in his own feelings. If you haven't already visited Whiskey Creek, don't pass this one up. You can read it without having read the others...although you will want to go back and find out more. If you have read the others, be prepared to have your perceptions rocked. This is a definite keeper.

The following pages are frankly bookish, and to the bookish only do they appeal. The habit of reading has been praised as a virtue, and has been denounced as a vice. In no case, if we except the perpetual study of newspapers (which cannot fairly be called reading), is the vice, or the virtue, common.

Adventures Among Books, by Andrew Lang

About the Author Andrew Lang (March, 31, 1844 July 20, 1912) was a Scottish writer and literary critic who is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. Lang s academic interests extended beyond the literary and he was a noted contributor to the fields of anthropology, folklore, psychical research, history, and classic scholarship, as well as the inspiration for the University of St. Andrew s Andrew Lang Lectures. A prolific author, Lang published more than 100 works during his career, including twelve fairy books, in which he compiled folk and fairy tales from around the world. Lang s Lilac Fairy and Red Fairy books are credited with influencing J. R. R. Tolkien, who commented on the importance of fairy stories in the modern world in his 1939 Andrew Lang Lecture On Fairy-Stories.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A book for people who care about reading By Reliquiae In this Kindle version there are a few spacing issues between paragraphs, but otherwise there are few other mistakes in format. The annoying issue is that the Table of Contents is not active. However the Footnotes are. At the end of this review I've included the missing Location numbers for the chapter divisions for anyone who is interested. The book is a well-known collection of papers written in the late 19th and early 20th centuries about literature. Andrew Lang is best remembered as a poet, novelist, critic, and a contributor to anthropology. But he is probably most admired for his collections of fairy tales. Lang believed that booklovers should read what they enjoy and care about, and reading his Adventures Among Books opens up new directions for readers to follow.Even after more than a century has passed, lovers of good literature will still find much to glean from these essays. The first chapter, from which the title of the book is taken, is one of the most valuable. It's the most autobiographical, offering insight into Lang's life and literary tastes. He recalls for us his most vivid memories of the stories he read or heard. Lang especially treasured tales from his childhood, which he said "clung to my memory." He accounts for his profound love for books as a "gift given to me by the fairies." Indeed he was a fan of fairytales, believing that "a boy of five is more at home in Fairyland than in his own country." This perhaps accounts for his publication of 12 books of fairytales. Lang moves on from his childhood to describe his personal encounters with the classics and his bond with the world's great authors that he so admired. Most other chapters are interesting and valuable as well, although some are dated and others too esoteric to hold my concentration. His essay about his friend, Robert Louis Stevenson, was insightful, although there is better literary analysis to be found elsewhere. The same may be said about chapters concerning "Oliver Wendell Holmes" or "Mr. Morris's Poems" or "Mrs. Radcliffe's Novels." A few discussions, although probably compelling in their day, have less value now, unless one is a Lang scholar or still reads some of the works he cites. On the other hand, I am probably just revealing my own shallow interests and literary ignorance.I particularly enjoyed his chapter devoted to St. Augustine's Confessions. It is a fine essay to introduce and illuminate this classic work - at least until the closing paragraphs. When Augustine finally submits to Christ, Lang admits that that was the point for him that "the Saint becomes less interesting." While he regards Augustine's Confessions as "the most human of books," he is far less interested in it when it "strays into theology" following the saint's conversion. Earlier, Lang admitted to not having absorbed much of his Scottish Presbyterian upbringing. "I got no harm from "The Shorter Catechism," he writes in the first essay, "of which I remember little, and neither then nor now was or am able to understand a single sentence." Maybe if he really had learned his catechism he would have appreciated Augustine's theology more.Lang pays tribute to many other great writers throughout the book, among them the American author, Nathaniel Hawthorne. He was America's "classic author," says Lang. "His renown is unimpeached: his greatness is probably permanent, because he is at once such an original and personal genius, and such a judicious and determined artist."A final example of Lang's essays is his "Stories and Story-telling." Where do good stories come from? In the end, Lang is not entirely sure. "Fiction is a beautiful disease of the brain... Something, an incident or an experience, or a reflection, gets imbedded, incrusted, in the properly constituted mind, and becomes the nucleus of a pearl of romance." The essay is fascinating for its exploration of how one possessed of the "disease" might begin to write good stories. "What is the mysterious art by which these things are done? What makes the well-told story seem real, rich with life, actual, engrossing? It is the secret of genius, of the novelist's art, and the writer who cannot practise the art might as well try to discover the Philosopher's Stone, or to 'harp fish out of the water.'" Too bad for the rest of us.Each of the essays in this volume is instructive and most are worth the time it takes to read and unpack them. Andrew Lang's Adventures Among Books could easily form a guide or syllabus for a literature course, except for the author's own warning: "Distrust a course of reading! People who really care for books read all of them. There is no other course." Good advice for booklovers of any age.TOCPreface: Loc. 7Chapter I: Adventures Among Books, Loc. 7Chapter II: Recollections of Robert Louis Stevenson, Loc. 405Chapter III: Rab's Friend, Loc. 574Chapter IV: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Loc. 797Chapter V: Mr. Morris's Poems, Loc. 968Chapter VI: Mrs. Radcliffe's Novels, Loc. 1198Chapter VII: A Scottish Romanticist of 1830, Loc. 1391Chapter VIII: The Confessions of Saint Augustine, Loc. 1558Chapter IX: Smollett, Loc. 1710Chapter X: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Loc. 2104Chapter XI: The Paradise of Poets, Loc. 2217Chapter XII: Paris and Helen, Loc. 2303Chapter XIII: Enchanted Cigarettes, Loc. 2433Chapter VIV: Stories and Story-Telling, Loc. 2508Chapter XV: The Supernatural in Fiction, Loc. 2617Chapter XVI: An Old Scottish Psychical Researcher, Loc. 2694Chapter XVII: The Boy, Loc. 2809Footnotes: Loc. 2980

One side holds the Pug's clever apology message, with space on the back to write your own "Sincere Apuglogies." Use these Apuglogies whenever just saying "I'm sorry" doesn't seem to be enough.

By Hello Happy I think that this book is a fun way to apologize when it may be kind of hard to do so. Couldn’t just about anyone use a little help with that? I know I could! I especially liked the “apuglogy in advance” and my son’s favorite was one that just says, “Ooooopppssss”. All twenty of the coupon style tear out pages have a cute pug and funny apology and then the back has lines for you to write out your sincere apuglogy. It's a perfect size for a stocking stuffer, too.

What fun....to just wander through the colors and get so satisfied.... and happy Amazing By L M C If I didn't ever try coloring like this I wouldn't believe how in love I could become with this simple act. So glad I was given Delightful Designs as a gift. I kept looking though the book trying to decided which one to start with. What fun it was too, just picking out the page I would start with. There I was, all set with my colored pencils, and looking at the page of flowers I had selected. I love flowers, all kinds. Since I decided this was my garden of flowers they would be any color I wanted to make them. What happened a few days later I'd look at when I had done and found myself putting details into each one....then shading each one...another day, I'd even put details into the leaves. I left the coloring book open on my kitchen counter with the pencils sitting in a plastic container...waiting and ready for me to pluck one and go back to the page I chose...and continue. What a great fun exercise for my brain too. I had to really stop and think... choose, decide and explore just how I wanted the colors to connect with each other. Before I knew it, an hour went by the first time. Then as another day I walked by and had to stop and take another pencil and add a little color here...then a little there...and before I knew it... another 1/2 hour went by. I never give myself this kind of time to just unwind, relax.... even sit and read a book. The great feeling I was getting by standing back and approving of my artwork.... was fantastic. No wonder I used to love to color with my mother as a child, share time with her together, watch her coloring grow like mine. As I did, it brought back that loving feeling, of so many childhood memories. The best part was seeing what I was doing, a little one day, a little more another day was taking shape and I like what I saw. I now have 3 pages to look at...in awe. I love what I did....and I almost can't believe I did it. The best thing that happened to me this month was someone introducing me to Susan Gable's coloring book for adults. Let me tell you, you are going to love it too. I promise. Now, guess what some of my daughters and granddaughters are getting as a gift. ??????? Wishing you the fun and healthy time...that will be entering your life.... with this adult coloring book of wonderful designs. I can't wait for Susan Gable to make a second one. Happy Coloring.....getting lost and liking it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. What wonderful designs inside By Anita L. Michaels Someone had mentioned to me that coloring would ease stress. I wasn't sure, and I went searching for a coloring book. The colors on the front appealed to me and I bought three of them. One for me, and two for friends. I just spent the last hour coloring. What wonderful designs inside! I can choose the colors and just sit there, quietly listening to music or the tv, while scratching away with a crayon or marker. Coloring is definitely not for kids anymore. I'd buy more of Susan Gable's designs in a heartbeat. Thanks!

A Practical, What-You-Need-to-Know Guide to Getting on Echolink  Echolink is a powerful system for linking the worlds of amateur radio and the Internet. You can link your PC, Android, iPhone, iPad or handheld radio to repeaters, individuals, or conferences located anywhere in the world, quickly and easily. And because it’s all digital, you get crystal clear, digital sound.  If you are a licensed Amateur Radio operator (ham), now you can communicate with other hams directly over the Internet, using streaming audio technology. Complex interfacing isn’t necessary to get started with Echolink. All you need is either a Windows PC with a microphone or an Apple iOS or Android device (iPads, iPods, Nexus, iPhone, Samsung, etc.). Yes, all you need to start is an app on your smartphone, there are no other costs involved.  This short book gives you a practical, step-by-step walkthrough of all the options to set up your Echolink “Station.” From registering your call sign with Echolink to installing the software on your PC, Android, or Apple device and making your first calls to individuals, ham repeaters, or conferences. This book covers everything you need to get started. The book boils down the vast amount of unnecessary technical information that can be found on the Echolink website (and other websites). It really is all-you-need-to-know.  This new edition now adds a new chapter, “Sysop Mode,” which covers basic interfacing between your computer and a radio. It uses the example of connecting up a Baofeng UV-5R radio with a SignaLink device to use as an Echolink node. This step-by-step example works easily for this common radio, and is easily modified to suit other radios. Inside you’ll find step-by-step tutorials on how use your radio or dongle to:  • Install and configure the software • Connect to Conferences, the “Chat rooms” of Echolink • Link to distant amateur radio repeaters repeaters • Link to individuals without knowing their location • Setup a linked radio to allow you to access Echolink from your handheld radio This short book gives you a simple step-by-step walkthrough of all the options to set up your Echolink station using dozens of screenshots and many examples. The whole process is detailed, from registering your call sign with the Echolink network to installing the Echolink software on your PC or mobile device and making your first calls to individuals, ham repeaters, or conferences.

—No... Bueno, un poco. —Él oyó al fondo una risa apagada—. Pero tenía que levantarme igualmente. ¿Cuándo has llegado? —Disculpa.

An awful poet, dumped by his girlfriend, roams through Italy, where he clearly doesn’t belong; an oil delivery man falls in love with a clumsy woman and becomes even clumsier than she is; and a six year old and his father kill over two hundred flies at a horse farm while the father wonders about life and death. Poor Advice and Other Stories, with its mix of the serious and the absurd, reveals Lou Gaglia’s humor, imagination, and range. A man avoids paying a World Series bet to a dying old woman; a vindictive whale chases after movie stars; and a man is jealous of his brother-in-law’s ventriloquist dummy. Find these stories and many others in Mr. Gaglia’s debut book.

Poor Advice and Other Stories, by Lou Gaglia

Review "Poor Advice"is a fine, well-balanced, collection of short stories and comes with "A Reader's Guide" that could facilitate discussion of this book in secondary and tertiary educational settings. It is certainly one that will not disappoint either recreational and/or academic readers.-- Amsterdam QuarterlyShake yourself free from the restraints of the ordinary--enter the clever and oh-so quirky mind of Lou Gaglia and his oddly-so,strangely-so, poignant cast of characters.-- Kathryn Magendie, author of SWEETIELou Gaglia has a knack for taking mundane, everyday tasks--like pumping gas, selling pools, and getting your car repaired--and turning them into the funniest and most damned profound stories you've ever read. Don't let the title fool you. Gaglia's stories are full of good advice. Just don't take any of them too seriously or you may find your life in shambles.-- Nathaniel Tower, author of Nagging Wives, Foolish Husbands Lou Gaglia's a spellbinding writer who gathers material from the underbelly gutter-stuff and conjures up a bit of hope for the hopeless, a place called home for the homeless, and a fighter's chance at love for the lonely strangers who are, after all, a lot like us.-- Jason Ockert, author of Wasp Box In Poor Advice and Other Stories, Lou Gaglia puts the entertainment back in literary fiction.-- MITCHELL WALDMAN, author of Petty Offenses & Crimes of the Heart His readers will find in Lou Gaglia's Poor Advice a new voice in contemporary short fiction, a voice made memorable by its sensitivity to language as it is spoken today, yet expressing the old verities of the human heart.-- EARL INGERSOLL, Emeritus Distinguished Professor of EnglishThese are the people that you meet in your dreams and the places you've visited only in your imagination: people who fail to see the big picture, obsess over one random-seeming detail of their daily routine, are occasionally an orca. It's nice to get to know them better.-- MATT ROWAN, author of Big Venerable"This Is My Montauk" has to be one of the most quiet, beautifully heartbreaking stories I've ever read. There is more going on in this small space than in many novels I've read. Perhaps this is the definition of a good short story writer: a writer who can swing from the very funny to the very serious and still retain a sense of universality.-- Anthony Ilacqua, editor, Umbrella Factory MagazinePoor Advice and Other Stories is a fantastic book of short stories written by Lou Gaglia. I would call these stories "short shorts", as most of them are only a few pages long, making them very easy to read. The stories run the gamut from funny to sweet to weird to complex, and the cast of characters is delightful. From the carpet cleaner with a grudge to a young man making a trek to Rome to forget a lost love, to a Russian spy and an American priest, these stories and their characters will keep readers entertained.--Bobbie Grob for Readers' FavoriteIn his collection Poor Advice and Other Stories, Lou Gaglia expertly mixes the absurd and the poignant so that you aren't overwhelmed by either...Gaglia's voice is confident and confidential, like a friend of a friend you meet at a party that tells you a couple of stories and you want to hear more.--Main Street RagPoor Advice is an imaginative collection of stories for purveyors of the short story form as well as for readers who enjoy a new twist to the postmodern take on existentialism, rich and creamy with nostalgia, wit and humor, and surprise much like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates. My advice, dear reader, is not to sample Lou Gaglia’s stories, but rather to read ’em all!  ---Toasted Cheese Literary Magazine

By TowerOPower Throughout this short story collection, Lou Gaglia weaves together the absurd and serious, somehow making everything believable. These are stories that are easy to get lost in, and you'll find an exciting new adventure in each tale. There's never a dull moment in this book. I highly recommend Gaglia's work to any fan of short stories. .Gaglia has a knack for taking mundane, everyday tasks—like pumping gas, selling pools, and getting your car repaired—and turning them into the funniest and most damn profound stories you've ever read. I ran “Little Leagues” in Umbrella Factory Magazine a few years back. At the time I read “Little Leagues” I knew it was a higher caliber story than many I was reading at the submission desk. “Little Leagues” also felt like it could have been my neighborhood growing up. There was a very universal feel to it. When I reread it in Poor Advice I felt the same way. But it wasn't my favorite Gaglia story anymore. “This Is My Montauk” has to be one of the most quiet, beautifully heartbreaking stories I've ever read. It's the story of two guys who live on Long Island and and they go help out a dead friend's mother. It's not a particularly long story. There is more going on in this small space than many novels I've read. Perhaps this is the definition of a good short story writer: a writer who can swing from the very funny to the very serious and still retain a sense of universality.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Dead-On Funny Book By Susan Tepper Lou Gaglia must be a funny/fun type of guy because his debut story collection is dead-on funny. The plots are similar to how Seinfeld approached plot: find the humor and quirk in the everyday experience. This is what Gaglia does in this book. His character voices, whether told in first or third person point of view, are dark and twisted funny. This book made me laugh out loud. It's also written from an intelligent brain. Anything really funny has to come out of a sharply perceptive mind and imagination. I could have read more. Terrific. Highly recommended.

They came and scattered themselves about the plains and prairies of West Texas like seeds thrown into the constant winds. In clusters or in singles they dug in. Depending on rainfall, they flourished or failed. Maybe the journeyers arrived in the springtime of a good year and saw the beauty of the place, expecting it to last. Maybe it did last for a season or so before a bad dry spell set in. Maybe it was several years before a real drought appeared, which they foolishly thought would pass. Regardless, there were soon small pockets of people becoming inseparable from the land. Some were made sad, mean, cantankerous, negative; some quiet, kind, patient; but all shared stubbornness, informed by the very land itself. In these eight stories that share the same setting across time, Joyce Gibson Roach writes of the place that sparked her treasured West Texas sensibility. Her fictive Horned Toad calls to stand and speak itself into existence--to live again in words. The characters are all familiar West Texas-types speaking in the tongues of dry places. All reflect their moments in time, proving that human nature does not change in this land of rain shadow.

The Land of Rain Shadow: Horned Toad, Texas, by Joyce Gibson Roach

Review Joyce Gibson Roach is a legend. She has truly outdone herself with her new collection of stories about the place that made her who she is. It’s an honor to know her and to know this book.--Sarah Bird, author of Above the East China Sea   With these eight gems of short fiction, Joyce Gibson Roach captures the culture of West Texas with precision and authenticity. Roach’s characters speak the language of the folk and carry the values of small-town Texas. The gallery of characters, from high-toned women to cowboy ranch hands, along with young narrators with hidden dreams and complicated questions, provide a chronicle of West Texas that has both local color and universal application. This book is destined to be a classic of Texas literature.--Phyllis Bridges, Cornaro Professor English, Texas Woman’s University   I know the exceptional talent of this award-winning author and have read most of her stories as well as most all of her writings in other genres. This new collection contains an unpublished story—“Crucero”—which I believe is one of the best she has ever written. It is a gem.--Bob J. Frye, emeritus professor of English, Texas Christian University

Roach’s stories are about the dynamics of small Texas towns By Texasbooklover Fiction/TexasRoach, Joyce GibsonThe Land of Rain Shadow: Horned Toad, Texas978-0-89672-926-1, Texas Tech University Press, paperback, 136 pages, $24.95June 15, 2015The Land of Rain Shadow: Horned Toad, Texas is a collection of eight short stories by Joyce Gibson Roach, she of the impeccable c.v.: author, rancher, Fellow of Texas State Historical Association and Texas Folklore Society, member of Texas Institute of Letters and the Philosophical Society of Texas, past president of Horned Lizard Conservation Society, Honoree in the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame, and founder of the Center for Western Cross Timbers Studies. The stories in Rain Shadow are linked by place, each set in the tiny, fictional town of Horned Toad. As these pieces reflect on the importance of the land, the characters and time periods change but the land abides. Roach quotes Tom Lea in her introduction: “Its richness is space, wide and deep and infinitely colored, visible to the jagged mountain rim of the world – huge and challenging space, to evoke huge and challenging freedom.” Roach and Lea are writing of West Texas, my home.Roach’s colloquial style had me laughing aloud at the candidate for sheriff in “In Broad Daylight” whose platform is elimination of free bosoms: “A Bra on Every Woman. Let’s keep our women Decent and Strapped Down!” Roach is at her Mark Twain best when poking fun at religious pieties and denominational hierarchies. “Just as I Am” reveals summer revival season as told by a fourteen-year-old girl. “Mid-July to August was the season to gather lukewarm Christians, Backsliders, and New Material into the fold.” Sister Elizabeth has the kids play “Find the Scripture.” “Who can tell us about Bible sports?” One kid jumped up. He was ready with Genesis 26:8, “Isaac was sporting with Rebecca his wife.” “Animals,” [Sister Elizabeth] said, her voice rising. Someone quoted her a line about oxen and a***s. “Women,” she shrieked. Bubba Ray Thompson replied with a plum about whores, and Sister Elizabeth hit the door…This story turns serious when the young narrator learns a lesson about the limits of Christian charity. In “Crucero” Roach brings out the imagery.“[W]hen the blue-black one and Señora Sanchez would stand in the yard by the windmill and pour buckets of water on each other to wash their hair…how they would sit on the back steps of the casa grande and comb the tangles from their own jet black hair…how the sun would shine on the women and how beautiful they were with their hair unbound and loose and wet, the drops of water like jewels and rainbows in their hair…children would wait until the next time when the words would summon them again — “The women are watering their hair!”Roach’s stories are about the dynamics of small towns in Texas. There’s the Christian sanctimony, the “isms” of class, sex, and race, and boastful ignorance of the larger world. There’s also discreet charity, the anchor of shared history, the comforts of the familiar, and united fronts. “Too simply put, it is hardly surprising that a place as marked by harshly aberrant weather as mine reveals itself in other human extremes as well: hard-nosed religion, peculiar politics, curious customs.”And everybody said, “Amen.”Originally published in Lone Star Literary Life.

Joyce Gibson Roach's stories tell of this country which she describes as land that "stretches between and beyond the Brazos and the Rio Grande, from the Panhandle through the Big Bend, from the Red River to the Gulf of Mexico." The stories draw us into this land and those lonely ones who inhabit it across the twentieth century.I'm a second-generation West Texan, I lived through some these years and spent happy hours under the windmill of one grandmother or on the city porch swing of the other, listening to their Texas-rich voices tell tales of the earlier times. The folks in and around Roach's fictional Horn Toad sound like my grandmothers and many of the stories echo the stories they told. The earliest story takes place in 1902, when the range is alive with arguments as barbed wire ("bob war") divides land and friendships. We gallop through the century, from small town church squabbles right into women's lib and going braless (the candidate for sheriff is agin it!) and take a look at Saddam Hussein and how our guys would "give it to him good." The Land of the Rain Shadow gives us a fine look at Texas and at life. These stories haven't floated right out of the wild, blue west Texas sky. Roach postscripts each tale with a note on how the story relates, sometimes closely, sometimes less so, to actual events in history thus making them even more real, more in their own moment. This adds to the pleasure for the casual reader, but for a true student of history is an outstanding addition.by Trilla Pandofor Story Circle Book Reviewsreviewing books by, for, and about women

A strange and wonderful love story By Kitty Smith Persephone and Vincent come together in a complex fantasy romance that stayed with me long after I set it aside. Frances Coker and Boxcar Joe have done an impressive job in this collaboration, bringing the two separate stories together as two tragic characters find love.Persephone is terrified at winding up all alone but she's also afraid of opening her heart up and getting hurt in the process. Then you have Vincent who is completely self absorbed and only into himself, quite possibly the worst person to ever get romantically involved in. But when he and Persephone connect, he starts to grow and develop feelings for someone other than himself. They embark on a strange, intense romance as the hand of fate puts them through the ringer in order to bring them together. This is one story you'll need to pay attention to because it's pretty complex, but it is so worth the ride!

By Maria Gillholm Love has many faces and won't come easily or being served in front of you on a silver plate. Unfortunately, that's what the society would like us to believe. Love means that you have to compromise, can't always have everything your way and that perfect picture of a puzzle, won't match reality. Persephone and Vincent show just that, it takes hard work and a few detours to make it happen. This book is one of the most well written I've read in a long time, and it captures the reader until the last line, you just can't put it down. The connection between Persephone and Vincent show the reader that there won't be any short cuts in life, but if willing to put the work in, there will be a reward worth the effort. This book is entertaining, well written and the most interesting and notable novel being published this year.

By Kevin Lintner "The Narcissist and The Nightingale" is as strange and unsettling of a romance novel that you will ever read. The two main characters are both struggling to recover after horrible events have turned their worlds upside down. This book is just as much of a horror novel as it is a romance novel. The story is strong though and the characters are very well developed and it is easy to become sympathetic with them even though their actions are the cause for their problems. I really enjoyed reading this. Hopefully there will be more to come from these promising writers.
