What would you do if you killed someone? What if it was a complete accident? What if you were only a teenager? What if you were with your three best friends when it happened? Would you confess? Would you run? Would you be able to live with yourself? FEAR is the first person confession of Vic Gossard. Ten years ago he and three of his friends killed a girl in the small town of Lancaster where they grew up. Now Vic has returned home to confess. To his parents. To the police. Vic's confession shows us that not getting caught does not necessarily mean getting away with it. We learn about the intervening years, how what happened impacted upon every element of his life leaving him broken. An insomniac, alcoholic who is barely able to function. We also learn about the night of the incident, the hours leading up to it and the decisions made in the aftermath. Until finally, Vic reaches the point of no return. FEAR is a tale of childhood innocence, friendship, loyalty, murder, depression and ultimately redemption.

So I am just going to ramble on and see where it takes me!As the blurb says, this is the confession of Vic Gossard. He and his friends played a stupid prank at school 10 years ago and it all went horribly wrong and they killed a girl and got away with it. Fast forward to now and the aftermath of this event which has actually plagued him all his adult life has finally come to a head and he cracks completely leading him to take what he believes to be his only option - go home and confess.I have read all of this author's previous books and loved each and every one. This one is a little different in style but it is still recognisable as Mr Sinclair's work. There is something I find familiar about how he spins a yarn and I was able to ease into this book as comfortably as for his other more mainstream offerings. The book takes the format of a spoken confession into a Dictaphone. It takes place in Vic's car and is fuelled by alcohol making for some repetition, deviation and even a little hesitation. He also come across to me as being somewhat of an unreliable witness in places. There are also not really any chapters to speak of. There are what looks to be section breaks headed by acronyms of FEAR, but there are natural breaks throughout the text which I found handy cos there were times that I wanted to step back from the book for a bit. I found parts to be a little heavy sometimes but that's probably a me thing not a book thing! At the beginning of the book, the author mentions the ending and how he was advised by a publisher to change it. Instead he wrote an epilogue and left it up to the reader whether they read it or left the book where he originally intended it to finish. I was totally satisfied by the ending as originally written but do confess reading the epilogue as a matter of interest but agree with the author that it is not necessary and actually think personally that it doesn't really work.As already mentioned, this is a bit different from the author's other books and also a bit different from anything else I have ever read (and I read loads) and I can see this book being not everybody's cup-of-tea so my advice would be that if you're not sure, read the sample first. That's what it's there for!I received an ARC from the Author in exchange for an honest review.

Daringly different By Ignite Suppose you had been one of a gang of four young, happy lads who were celebrating leaving school, and you’d done something, collectively, which had resulted in a death. How would you live with it? This is the question posed in this unusual tale in which Vic Gossard, speaking into a digital recorder in his car in the middle of the night, wrestles with his demons. He is telling the tale of his despair, his friends, his family, and, just as it would if you were in that position, it comes out haphazardly in a stream-of-consciousness narrative which is so compelling it’s hard to stop reading. Because it’s told to the reader in the first person it has an intimacy about it.This is a departure from Jamie Sinclair’s usual stories and a daring and worthwhile experiment. I really enjoyed it and it brought home how one uncharacteristic act by people who have previously led good lives, can devastate not only the victim and her family but the lives and families of the boys concerned. A very good read indeed.
