Bill James is on top form in this sharply satirical black comedy set behind the scenes at a museumGeorge Lepage, the new Director of the Hulliborn Regional Museum and Gallery, has great hopes that his tenure in the post will be short and profitable. He has visions of early retirement, and perhaps – like his predecessor, and his predecessor’s predecessor – a knighthood. But circumstances do their best to snatch his happy dreams away from him. First a deranged former staff member causes a riot in the Folk Department, and then three recently purchased, ruinously expensive paintings of dubious authenticity are stolen, putting the museum’s security – and judgement – into question. The fate of the upcoming Japanese Ancient Surgical Skills exhibition, and its astonishing collection of tonsil excision implements, hangs dangerously in the balance. And over everything hangs the grim specter of the former Director, “Flounce” Butler-Minton, whose body may be most definitely dead but whose legacy lives on. And with every day that passes, the rumours of what Flounce did behind the Iron Curtain – and how the haversack straps, the whippet and the legendary Mrs Cray were involved – grow, threatening to erupt into a scandal that may cost the museum, and Lepage himself, everything . . .

Snatched: A British black comedy, by Bill James

From Booklist George Lepage has just been appointed director of the Hulliborn Museum, succeeding the renowned but universally despised “Flounce” Butler-Minton. Determined to make his own mark (and perhaps his fortune and reputation), Lepage is unprepared for what happens next. First, a former museum employee is discovered naked in the Folk Department, apparently having sex with one of the wax figures—in front of a crowd of schoolchildren. Then four of the museum’s most valuable paintings are stolen. George’s personal life is beginning to crumble, and an unfortunate allusion to “consulting” the stuffed duck-billed platypus in his office threatens to make him a laughingstock. Then there’s the pressure of the visit by a jury of Japanese art experts to determine if the Hulliborn is a suitable venue for a special exhibition of ancient Japanese surgical instruments. James departs from his usual crime stories to venture into the world of art in this dark comedy that strains the bounds of credibility but provides laugh-aloud entertainment. His fans will recognize his unique, over-the-top prose; black humor; and twisted view of humanity. Entertaining, wacky, and witty. --Emily Melton

Review "Guaranteed to satisfy all your most mean-spirited fantasies about the gatekeepers of high culture, whose appetites turn out to be as primitive as those of the lowlifes in James’ noir procedurals about Harper and Iles" (Starred Kirkus Review)"His fans will recognize his unique, over-the-top prose; black humor; and twisted view of humanity. Entertaining, wacky, and witty” (Booklist)

About the Author Critically-acclaimed crime writer Bill James is a former journalist, and wrote for The Sunday Times, the Daily Mirror, the Spectator, the New Review and Punch. Married, with four children, he lives in Wales.

This novel centers on George Lepage who has recently been appointed as the Director of the Hulliborn Museum, succeeding the highly respected Sir Eric Butler-Minton. George has designs on a knighthood for himself, but problems arise. Four famous paintings are stolen and a former employee, Neville Falldew, is bent on causing trouble. In addition a Japanese team is negotiating with Lepage to bring an exhibit to the museum. Various museum employees get in on the action as Lepage struggles to make sense of the situation. The figure of the late Sir Eric hovers over the action. The story meanders through various comical situations to its end.People who are fond of British humor will enjoy the zany antics that occur in this novel. As an American I found it to be mostly silly.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. bizarre little art crime novel By Stephen Wahrhaftig Bill Jams occasionally offers glimpse of the type of twisted humor that has made the Harpur and Illes mysteries so great. While this is a lesser effort, I found it funny and interesting. Good for Bill a James fans as we hope for more appearances of his great detective characters.

So Well-Written It Feels Like a True Story By Kieran Hair “Pallbearers and Gamblers” opens with nine “Happy Squad” members of the Honor Guard in Missouri smoking weed and drinking Ripple in an Army van as they approach a soldier’s funeral. By chance, Corporal Michael Dibiaso is given the unfortunate task of presenting the fallen soldier’s family with a folded flag. At first, it appears that this may be a book about drug-addled veterans trying to enjoy life while constantly confronted with death. But shortly after Dibiaso is granted an early discharge to attend school, the young Vietnam veteran’s story begins to take a different direction. At his last funeral, Dibiaso had lost it and become emotional. He continues to attend military funerals after his discharge, feeling for the families in attendance. Meanwhile, things are rough at home. Michael’s sister Claudia calls to let him know that their mother is dying. Their father, a former financial adviser to Al Capone, appears to be holding strong for the most part. But Sergio, their older brother, is now a wise guy himself and is making enemies in the mob. When Michael decides to get himself wrapped up in the whole mess, he finds himself doing things he had never dreamed of doing. Everyone from his family to his girlfriend Barb could tell that he was different after Vietnam, but now he’s forced to realize just how true this really is.Michael John Cruit has crafted an excellent story with a great deal of emotional depth. His ability to combine Chicago’s history with that of a fictional family is excellent, to the extent that the characters and their backstory feel absolutely real. While the story is lengthy and the story of Tony Dibiaso’s history with Al Capone is rather expository, it still works. There are times at which it briefly feels like reading a character’s biography, only to be taken back to a compelling plotline once the exposition ends. For those who enjoy deep and character-driven stories, “Pallbearers and Gamblers” is worth checking out.

Born and raised in Minneapolis, MN, from March 1966 to March 1969 he served in the United States Army, including thirteen months in Viet Nam. Following his military tour earned a degree in sociology from the University of Minnesota, and in 1980 he went to Costa Rica to write his dissertation, but never returned to the US. He is a survivor, living n the rainforest in poverty and eventually adjusting to his needs for living with odd occupations. His saving grace is his writing and his published works include FASTBALL FARI, PHILLIP MOONFIRE SHOT TO PIECES, INVITATION TO GLOBALOGY: AN ALIEN PERSPECTIVE, NUCLEAR MISSION and now PALLBEARERS AND GAMBLERS.Michael's ability to make the incredible credible is a gift. He manages to weave his story with such rational security that even the obtuse aspects of his tale seem possible. He has created characters we can see, uses vernacular language to make us enter his realm with ease, included many military style abbreviations and lets us know what they man so we don't dissociate from the story out of a feeling of academic distance. And in all this he brings an informed veteran’s stance that balances well with the world of organized crime.Michael has distilled the storyline well in his synopsis: ‘When Michael Dibiaso returned from Vietnam, the U.S. Army assigned him to the Honor Guard, which acts as pallbearers for soldiers killed in Vietnam. This experience turns Michael into a bitter opponent of the war. After his discharge from the Army, he continues to attend the funerals of soldiers killed in the war. Michael’s family had been involved with the Chicago Mafia for years. His father had been good friends with Al Capone, and his older brother Sergio works with the Mafia in their Stardust Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Sergio becomes embroiled in a fatal dispute with a member of the New York Mafia and Michael gets involved. The brothers decide to get revenge by stealing the year-end skim from the Desert Inn – seven million dollars.’A fascinating story, worthy of comparison with some of our best authors who survey the Vietnam War after effects, and here Michael proves he can handle the crime thriller theme well. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, October 15

Enjoyable and Fast Paced By Veronica PALLBEARERS AND GAMBLERS, by Michael Cruit, had everything in it to help me escape from my life for a little while. It was an exciting, heart pumping, edge of your seat kind of a read. It was extremely well written, quick paced, and the characters just sucked me right in. It was a bit different than what I usually read, but sometimes different is better, and that was the case with this one.Main character Michael Dibiso just returns back home from Vietnam. He is assigned to Honor Guard as a pallbearer for his fallen brethren. This is no easy position, however. Even the strongest man on earth would turn into the most bitter after dealing with this position. In the midst of all of this, his family has ties in the Chicago Mafia, which makes things a lot trickier than they already are. Seven million dollars now comes into question. With so much happening, it was extremely difficult to put this one down for even a second.I enjoyed it, and look forward to reading more by Michael Cruit.

In this beguiling collection of short stories and memoirs, first published in 1969, Mordecai Richler looks back on his childhood in Montreal, recapturing the lively panorama of St. Urbain Street: the refugees from Europe with their unexpected sophistication and snobbery; the catastrophic day when there was an article about St. Urbain Street in Time; Tansky's Cigar and Soda with its "beat-up brown phonebooth" used for "private calls"; and tips on sex from Duddy Kravitz.

Overflowing with humor, nostalgia, and wisdom, The Street is a brilliant introduction to Richler's lifelong love affair with St. Urbain Street and its inhabitants.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A very good, funny book By Amazon Customer A very personal way of telling about his youth on St Urbain Street, Montreal (Quebec), "The Street" is a thoughtfully crafted book by Mordecai Richler. It alternates chapters that sound like memories (but might be fictitious) with others that sound like short stories (but might be based on actual characters and events). The whole picture is that of the Jewish neighborhood in which a young boy, then a young man grows up, with descriptions of family life and relationships around the time of the Second World War and just after that. A very good book, witty, funny, and often profound. This is my first Richler read, and it has given me much desire to read more by him.One of the stories, "The summer my grandmother was supposed to die", was made into a fine, much award-nominated animated film called "The Street", by Caroline Leaf and can be seen on the National Film Board website ([...]).

In Erewhon, an anagram for "nowhere," sickness is a punishable crime, criminals receive compassionate medical treatment, and machines are banned, lest they evolve and take over. Originally published in 1872, the proto-steampunk novel Erewhon won its author immediate recognition as a satirist. SamuelButler followed in the tradition of Voltaire and Swift in creating Erewhon and Erewhon Revisited, which are widely recognized as the nineteenth century's most important works of their kind.Entertaining and provocative, these books are unsparing in their treatment of the hypocrisies of Victorian society, taking aim at the family, church, and mechanical "progress." George Orwell, no stranger to the depiction of futuristic societies, noted that at the time of Erewhon's writing the author needed "imagination of a very high order to see that machinery could be dangerous as well as useful." Today's readers will also find the book remarkably prescient in its anticipation of future sociological trends.

Lunde I must say, when I picked up 'Erewhon' at the public library two and a half months ago, I thought 'hmm, I vaguely recall this title' and 'Well, I laughed out loud at some parts of Butler's translation of 'The Iliad.' Should be a great read!'To be fair, Butler's own 1901 preface to the combined edition apologizes for his youthful errors. I don't know what age he was when he translated Homer, but he must have been much older, and much more confident. His prose creaks with the layers of dried horse-glue that he's applied in polishing his extensive sentences. He is trying to satirize 19th Cent. English churchmen, Oxbridge dons and so forth, which is interesting academically, but... rather dry. Dry, dry, dry!I did jot down one quote, which deals with the tendency of people to more jealously guard their purses than their ideas (or something like that) which made me smile. But that's one in 300 pages. This work smells of youth. It's overthought and under-felt. Not one of the characters (including the narrator) inspires even a moment's empathy. And I'm a guy who cried at the 'Lavender blue, dilly-dilly' passage in 'London' a few years back. It doesn't take much to touch my outwardly stern, inwardly caramel-coated Norwegian-American psyche!I agree with the other reviewer who said other 'dystopian' works have been done better. I might add, Orwell gets more laughs.Does he get away with Arowhena? Yes, because he tells us several times through the work that he does. (Yawn.) How does he escape Erewhon? Who cares? I'll never find out, I stopped after 280 pages.Back to the joys of Homer for me.

I suppose I'm an idiot By Jack Purcell I've tried several times to read and enjoy this piece of fantasy freshman English types have been forced to drudge through for the last century. I've never succeeded. I tried it as a young man, forced to write papers on it and hated it. I've tried it as a horrid old codger, discovering tome by tome that books I once found awful have now grown merit and become a source of joy. Not so with this one.Likely as not Erewhon was imaginative when it was written. Today it's been superceded by thousands of better reads with the same theme. There's nothing here that won't be found more interestingly expressed on any library or bookstore shelf in America.

The Sound of Blue takes readers on an exquisite and soulful journey into a rare part of the world, exploring the healing power of music in the lives of three strangers during the last Balkan War. Sara Foster has left America for the adventure of a lifetime-teaching English to the elite of Hungary, but ends up teaching in a refugee camp instead and falling in love with one of her students, a celebrated synesthete composer. When he mysteriously disappears from the camp, Sara finds herself crossing the border into his war-torn homeland, determined to return the musical masterpiece that he has left behind. In a perilous journey that takes her to Dubrovnik, a magnificent stone city on the Croatian Riviera, Sara meets Luka, a troubled drummer boy, who's captivated the town's attention and heart and who holds the secret to the composer's fate and her own. Bringing to life a world that readers seldom have the opportunity to see, The Sound of Blue reveals poignant truths about the quests for refuge we all pursue.

The Sound of Blue, by Holly Lynn Payne

From Publishers Weekly Payne's second novel (after 2002's well-received The Virgin's Knot) ruminates on refuge and how solace may be found in music and memory. In 1992, after getting rejected from Harvard Law School, Sara Foster flees to teach English in Hungary. She envisions a glamorous Budapest "where poets and politicians gobbled cakes and cobbled history, mixing ink with icing, calling it sweet," but instead finds herself giving lessons in optimism to Croatian refugees in Csokhid who have fled the "twentieth-century psoriasis" of war. Though used to solitude, Sara feels painfully disconnected; she finds comfort in the music of Milan, a Serbian composer who welcomes her attention ("The sound of blue had permitted perfect strangers to turn toward each other in one measured moment of refuge"). But when Milan returns to his native Dubrovnik to face his demons, Sara follows, to the war-torn city where a young half-Croatian, half-Serbian refugee named Luka searches for his drum, which will "wake the dead." Payne employs flourishes of figurative language and poetic musings on the nature of refuge and memory. But these exquisite (and sometimes overwritten) miniatures come at the expense of the bigger picture; the plot's clarity and momentum suffer, as do character development and the novel's real and dark context. From Booklist Payne's haunting second novel, following The Virgin Knot (2002), takes place during the Balkan War in a Hungarian refugee camp housing 48,000 Croats. After failing to get into Harvard law school, Sara Foster intended to teach English abroad. Instead she ends up at the refugee camp, where she quickly becomes inextricably entangled in the anguished lives of her students. She knows her job is futile: the refugees are "only teetering on the edge of consciousness," never speaking of the past, for that would make it real. But Sara bonds with Elana, a widowed Croat nurse who has become separated from her nine-year-old son, who readers see scavenging for food and refusing to go to the orphanage. Running from her own demons, Sara is especially vulnerable to the heart-wrenching chaos surrounding her, echoing the words spoken on her arrival, "The minute you open your heart to a refugee, you suffer everything they have suffered." Against a background of stark wartime imagery, Payne laces her tale with poetic musings on the healing and redemptive power of love. Deborah DonovanCopyright © American Library Association. Review Payne slowly reveals, secret by secret, the real stories of her characters’ shadowy pasts... unforgettable. -- San Francisco Chronicle

Soul-Searching Characters and Their Connectedness By Sondra Miller The characters in Ms. Payne's second novel, The Sound of Blue, are more compelling and intriguing than her first book, The Virgin's Knot. She focuses on the sadness and connectedness between lost souls: people searching for parts of themselves that are repressed, lost or waiting to be discovered. Her strong use of description and metaphor helps the reader look inward and contemplate his/her own life's searches.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Worth the wait By Nathan D. Hulley After reading The Virgin's Knot, I couldn't wait for Holly Payne's second book to arrive. In the beginning you can almost feel the puszta air around you as you get to know the main character Sara and Payne skillfully parallels the unknowns of the night in a turbulent place in time with the mysteries of Sara's past. The depth of description of towns in Croatia and Hungary brings you into a not-so-distant war that many people still struggle with, and Payne does a great job of exploring this through the characters. Perhaps the best aspect is the spirit of the Balkans, which you can feel throughout the novel. The only thing that could have made the book better would have been reading it sitting on the castle wall at Dubrovnik. Maybe next time around.

Amazingly Insightful and Accurate By David Lynn Having spent some time as a volunteer at refugee camp in Hungary, I was intrigued by Holly Payne's ability to articulate the emotions of those who have had to call these places home. Her words brought back memories of my own observations and interactions in a way that was amazingly insightful and accurate. I appreciate her efforts to bring depth and connection to the often anonymous faces that we see on TV and shed light on the deep contrast between the rich vibrant culture of the Balkans and the horrors that tore this region apart in the late twentieth century.

A Prequel that Provides a Backstory to the Chet Series By Susan Barton, Reviewer Charles Tucker is a hardworking young man with a loving wife and an adoring little boy. Earning a living as a dairy farmer is notoriously difficult in any economy. When Charles needs a new truck to keep the family business running smoothly he meets salesman, Cal, who's dealing with his own employment struggles. Cal makes Charles an offer he can't refuse and the wheels of fate are set in motion. Charles makes a decision that he'll sorely regret years later. This book is a prequel to Larry Murray's previous "Chet" books. The author fills in the backstory about Chet, Charles and the events that led to his current feelings about the old truck. I have not yet read the author's other books, so I can't comment on them. However, I can say that "Chet: From Out of Nowhere" is a quick, thoughtful and engaging read about life, love and loss. There are subtle religious undertones scattered sparingly. It's clear the author is a man of faith and he uses his beliefs in a positive, reassuring manner - I don't consider myself "religious" and I found this comforting and not at all overwhelming. The editing is impeccable. The author's writing is intelligent and genuine. I would recommend this book if you're a fan of short inspirational literary fiction. I plan on reading the rest of the Chet series.

When he finally chose his 1964 Chevy pick-up truck, it took a lot for him to get to that decision. I thought it very sad that his son Jason had to die in his favorite "Chet". I enjoyed the intervention of Jason's Grandad. I felt the love coming through to him taking Jason home.

The early Christians received the Sacred Books of the Jews as inspired Scripture containing a divine revelation and clothed with divine authority, and till well on in the first century of the Christian era the name Scriptures was applied exclusively to these books. In time, as they came to attach the same authority to the Epistles and Gospels, and to call them, too, Scriptures (2 Pet. iii. 16), they distinguished the Christian writings as the Scriptures of the new dispensation, or, as they called it, the "new covenant," from the Scriptures of the "old covenant" (2 Cor. iii. 6, 14), the Bible of the Jews. The Greek word for covenant (diathéké) was rendered in the early Latin translation by testamentum, and the two bodies of Scripture themselves were called the Old Testament and the New Testament respectively.

Christophe's eyes behold whiteness everywhere he looks. Snowflakes falling from a white sky drift into brilliant banks covering lawn and field. Forest floors and mountain peaks slumber beneath snow deep as an eiderdown quilt. Rooftops silently uphold white bunting like royal heads bearing ermine-trimmed crowns. Smoky puffs escaping hearths' inferno billow through chimneys to find swift relief in snowfall's embrace. Frozen sidewalks winding onward escort streets lying-in-state wear their own shades of white. Even chevron tracks left by cars' winter tires differentiate contrasting high and low depths imprinted on roadways' snowy luster leaving behind impressions resembling long sterling silver chain-link necklaces winding through the frosty-white neighborhood that is Soleil. The horizon is probably white too, if I could only see it! Worldly bachelor, Hermes Thomas and his nephew, Christophe, orphan son of his brother and Madeleine (Hermes' secret obsession) are brought to vibrant new light by way of scintillating girl, Sheila whose gentle actions ravel the quiet side of Healing. The Canadian-born author was raised without television and educated across the provinces between Vancouver and Toronto in one-room schoolhouses and largest city campuses by an educator-mother possessed with a wanderlust spirit. Jeanette Skirvin, BSc. RDH resides by the seaside in California. By the same author, published by Elementá: "Jaguar Ravenz King" and "Rollins of Stone House"

Ein Sommernachtstraum (German Edition), by William Shakespeare

About the Author Arguably the greatest English-language playwright, William Shakespeare was a seventeenth-century writer and dramatist, and is known as the Bard of Avon. Under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I, he penned more than 30 plays, 154 sonnets, and numerous narrative poems and short verses. Equally accomplished in histories, tragedies, comedy, and romance, Shakespeare s most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew, and As You Like It.

Like many of his contemporaries, including Christopher Marlowe, Shakespeare began his career on the stage, eventually rising to become part-owner of Lord Chamberlain s Men, a popular dramatic company of his day, and of the storied Globe Theatre in London.

Extremely popular in his lifetime, Shakespeare s works continue to resonate more than three hundred years after his death. His plays are performed more often than any other playwright s, have been translated into every major language in the world, and are studied widely by scholars and students.
