So Well-Written It Feels Like a True Story By Kieran Hair “Pallbearers and Gamblers” opens with nine “Happy Squad” members of the Honor Guard in Missouri smoking weed and drinking Ripple in an Army van as they approach a soldier’s funeral. By chance, Corporal Michael Dibiaso is given the unfortunate task of presenting the fallen soldier’s family with a folded flag. At first, it appears that this may be a book about drug-addled veterans trying to enjoy life while constantly confronted with death. But shortly after Dibiaso is granted an early discharge to attend school, the young Vietnam veteran’s story begins to take a different direction. At his last funeral, Dibiaso had lost it and become emotional. He continues to attend military funerals after his discharge, feeling for the families in attendance. Meanwhile, things are rough at home. Michael’s sister Claudia calls to let him know that their mother is dying. Their father, a former financial adviser to Al Capone, appears to be holding strong for the most part. But Sergio, their older brother, is now a wise guy himself and is making enemies in the mob. When Michael decides to get himself wrapped up in the whole mess, he finds himself doing things he had never dreamed of doing. Everyone from his family to his girlfriend Barb could tell that he was different after Vietnam, but now he’s forced to realize just how true this really is.Michael John Cruit has crafted an excellent story with a great deal of emotional depth. His ability to combine Chicago’s history with that of a fictional family is excellent, to the extent that the characters and their backstory feel absolutely real. While the story is lengthy and the story of Tony Dibiaso’s history with Al Capone is rather expository, it still works. There are times at which it briefly feels like reading a character’s biography, only to be taken back to a compelling plotline once the exposition ends. For those who enjoy deep and character-driven stories, “Pallbearers and Gamblers” is worth checking out.

Born and raised in Minneapolis, MN, from March 1966 to March 1969 he served in the United States Army, including thirteen months in Viet Nam. Following his military tour earned a degree in sociology from the University of Minnesota, and in 1980 he went to Costa Rica to write his dissertation, but never returned to the US. He is a survivor, living n the rainforest in poverty and eventually adjusting to his needs for living with odd occupations. His saving grace is his writing and his published works include FASTBALL FARI, PHILLIP MOONFIRE SHOT TO PIECES, INVITATION TO GLOBALOGY: AN ALIEN PERSPECTIVE, NUCLEAR MISSION and now PALLBEARERS AND GAMBLERS.Michael's ability to make the incredible credible is a gift. He manages to weave his story with such rational security that even the obtuse aspects of his tale seem possible. He has created characters we can see, uses vernacular language to make us enter his realm with ease, included many military style abbreviations and lets us know what they man so we don't dissociate from the story out of a feeling of academic distance. And in all this he brings an informed veteran’s stance that balances well with the world of organized crime.Michael has distilled the storyline well in his synopsis: ‘When Michael Dibiaso returned from Vietnam, the U.S. Army assigned him to the Honor Guard, which acts as pallbearers for soldiers killed in Vietnam. This experience turns Michael into a bitter opponent of the war. After his discharge from the Army, he continues to attend the funerals of soldiers killed in the war. Michael’s family had been involved with the Chicago Mafia for years. His father had been good friends with Al Capone, and his older brother Sergio works with the Mafia in their Stardust Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Sergio becomes embroiled in a fatal dispute with a member of the New York Mafia and Michael gets involved. The brothers decide to get revenge by stealing the year-end skim from the Desert Inn – seven million dollars.’A fascinating story, worthy of comparison with some of our best authors who survey the Vietnam War after effects, and here Michael proves he can handle the crime thriller theme well. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, October 15

Enjoyable and Fast Paced By Veronica PALLBEARERS AND GAMBLERS, by Michael Cruit, had everything in it to help me escape from my life for a little while. It was an exciting, heart pumping, edge of your seat kind of a read. It was extremely well written, quick paced, and the characters just sucked me right in. It was a bit different than what I usually read, but sometimes different is better, and that was the case with this one.Main character Michael Dibiso just returns back home from Vietnam. He is assigned to Honor Guard as a pallbearer for his fallen brethren. This is no easy position, however. Even the strongest man on earth would turn into the most bitter after dealing with this position. In the midst of all of this, his family has ties in the Chicago Mafia, which makes things a lot trickier than they already are. Seven million dollars now comes into question. With so much happening, it was extremely difficult to put this one down for even a second.I enjoyed it, and look forward to reading more by Michael Cruit.
