PREFACETHE following work, all save from page 105 to the end, appeared in the Celtic Magazine in 1883-4, and is here reprinted from the Magazine type. Hence it is that it is reproduced " with all its imperfections on its head," and the critic must be asked, before condemning details at least, to note the list of corrections appended to this preface. The intention of this series of papers was to popularise the subject of Mythology, and to apply its principles to the elucida tion of Celtic beliefs, tales, and traditions. I wished to place clearly before my Gaelic brethren the exact position which the religious beliefs of the Celts held in the European kinship, to clear up the misty subject of " Druidism," and to reconstruct, from the shattered materials to hand, the Pantheon of their Gaelic ancestors. This I undertook, knowing that in the last part of my object—the rehabilitation of the Gaelic Olympus—my results must only be tentative, for the material for reconstruction is dif ficult to deal with, and much of it is in MSS. unedited.Since these papers began to appear in print, events have travelled with more than usual rapidity both in the field of general and of Celtic Mythology. It was last year that Mr Andrew Lang delivered his lively attack against the " orthodox" school of mythologists, and it was also last year that M. D'Arbois de Jubainville's important works on Celtic Literature and Myth ology appeared. Mr Lang's attack has certainly driven the older school from several of their positions, but he has by no means overthrown either the importance of language in the development of myth, or the fact that the sun, the sky, the powers of wind and storm, and the change of day and night were the most prominent factors in the creation of the deities and powers of the ancient mythologies. Despite Mr Lang, myth ology is, nevertheless, a dramatic view of the course of nature, and a personification of its forces; and language has been a most potent force in the development of myths, because it stereotyped older epithets and expressions, which in later ages were misunder stood. Mr Lang has, however, shown that language is by no means so much the cause of myth as Max Muller and Cox be lieve, and that many of the myths claimed as Aryan are found also among barbarous and savage tribes all over the world. What Mr Lang has proved in regard to the origin and growth of myth ology does not in the least invalidate the arguments and con clusions in the following papers, for the reason that, on the whole, I followed Mr Tylor's views on Mythology, and he, like Mr Lang, is an anthropologist. But what Mr Lang has invalidated in these papers of mine is the relation in which, following Max Muller, I held myth and folk-tale. Mr Lang has made it clear in his " Custom and Myth," and better still in his introduction to Mrs Hunt's translation of " Grimm's Fairy Tales," that the old idea that the fairy or popular tale is a broken-down myth is so totally wrong, that the opposite is nearer the truth. Indeed, Mr Lang holds that the myth—the god-tale—is but a sublimated folk-tale. That, however, is not often the case. Folk-tales have been raised to myths ; the Jason myth is a case in point; but myths have often, and, indeed, with change and advance of religion, they have generally become folk-tales. Another thing that Mr Lang has done is to place the folk-tale on a proper way towards explanation. The " orthodox " belief is that the hero of the folk-tale must be the sun-god, and that many incidents, in cluding the beast-form he assumes, arose from " disease of lan guage," that is, from after ages misunderstanding the epithets applied to the sun-god and to the incidents, by a previous age. This view is untenable. Mr Lang shows that savages now believe in men being transformed into animals ; in fact, that we are kin with animals as we are with one another. Transforma tion of men into beasts is a fixed article of savage faith. It may be caused by witchcraft

Jones Celtic Mythology and Religion by Alexander Macbain, Sterling Eneas Mackay, 1917, 256 ffThough this book is nearly a century old, the subject matter does not itself undergo changes like so many facets of our present-day world. There is more up-to-date research it is true, but a Celt steeped in these traditions himself, as is the author, is an excellent place to start any reading in the subject. Gaelic was the author's first language and he is regarded as one of the greatest Scottish Celtic scholars, specialising in philology. He qualified with a Master's Degree in philosophy and a Doctorate in Laws from Aberdeen University. After an introductory chapter by the Aberdeen and Oxford scholar Professor William J. Watson that puts Macbain into his academic background, the book begins with an exploration of the nature, cause and spread of myth. The author goes on to record and discuss what is known about the place of myth within the religions of the Aryan Nation, Celts, the Gauls and the Druids. This is an eminently readable little book and, as I too spoke only Welsh as a child before I went to an English-speaking school, and my father was a scholar of medieval Welsh poetry, the book was of a great personal interest. The author makes the stories come alive and the presentation is not at all dry and academic, though not lacking in academic rigour.Howard Jones is the author of The World as Spirit

An entire day of festivities has been planned. Helga Oliver, the town’s beloved elderly historian will introduce the guest of honor – Lilypad. The special honor of gift-giver has been delegated to newcomer Stan (Kristan) Connor. No one is to know what the gift is before it is presented to Lilypad. Lilypad is the celebrity groundhog who will let the town know if spring is coming soon. When Helga does not show up at the appointed time, most everyone goes searching for her. Betty Meany, town librarian, finds Helga in the History Museum, at the bottom of the basement steps. Helga is pronounced dead at the hospital. Everyone is devastated at the untimely passing of Helga Oliver. Stan will have to delve into some town history in order to solve this death. She had better be careful, or she could become a part of history too.Things to ponder: Why didn’t Helga have her cane with her? What was Helga doing in the basement? What proof does Betty have that Helga was pushed down the stairs?I always look forward to spending time with Stan Connor and her friends and family. The author does not disappoint. This fast-paced page-turner will keep you guessing until the very end. Cozy mystery lovers will enjoy figuring out whodunit. Throw in doggy nuptials and you are in for a real treat. The author has thoughtfully provided some recipes for your furry guys. I am looking forward to visiting Frog Ledge very soon. So, if you like your mystery will with a lot of four-legged friends, then you should be reading The Icing on the Corpse.FTC Full Disclosure - A copy of this book was sent to me by the publisher in hopes I would review it. There is a death and it might be connected to a murder in 1948 that was never solved. Lots of drama, relationships, and humor. It is also a clean read. Kristan "Stan" Connor is single and she makes pet treats and meals as a business. She has been dating Jake. She has 2 dogs and 1 cat and finds a cat on her door step with a note on her collar asking for a home. There is a celebration on the green on ground hog day when the local historian can't be found. She has fallen down the stairs at the museum. Some thing it might be murder. Adrian Fox star of Celebrity Ghost Hunters comes to do a episode on the old library. A boxer died in the basement in 1948. The town is in a uproar half wants to stop the filming others want it. Kristan is a big fan of the show.Kristan has also been asked to help a few people in town. She has trouble saying no. She is also asked to plan a dog wedding on Valentines day. It sounds cute and fun to dress up and make special cake and treats. The setting is Frog Ledge, Connecticut. A small town that is a farming community.I have liked this series. It makes you smile while reading it. I hope there is more of this series.I was given this ebook from Net Galley and Kensington Books . In return I agreed to give a honest review of The Icing on the Corpse.

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Grow a backbone, Stan By astrid This is my third Pawsitively Organic book, and may well be my last. There are too many things that make me crabby about this book. First, Stan is the heroine. That is short for Kristan. Why not Kris? Stan is a male name. Second, everyone in the book seems to get mad at Stan at some point, (this was also the case in the last 2 books), and for really silly and nonsensical reasons. Stan, instead of fighting back, just gets weepy and sad and the minute the people who were mad at her make any sort of moves to reconcile, she welcomes them back without any discussion. Third, Stan seems unable to stand up for herself in another way, in that whenever anyone asks her to do something, she agrees, whether she wants to or not. She needs to grow a backbone. Fourth, there is the whole ghost business in this book, and the woman who is a medium and talks to dead people. Stupid. Fifth, she equates naturopathic veterinary medicine as equal to traditional veterinary medicine. Sixth, there is a dog wedding in the book. The supposed reason is that the rescue neuter and spay dogs love each other so much, it was only logical they get married, That way, if anything ever happened to the owner, there would be no question that they would stay together! If you can afford to waste money on a dog wedding, you can afford the money to have a lawyer make sure that happens in your WILL. A dog wedding is not legal and means nothing other than that the owner is a bit looney. Seventh, there is the idiot that just leaves her newly deceased mother's cat outside Stan's house because she just knows that if the cat is meant to stay with Stan, the cat won't run away. How stupid is that, just abandoning a cat OUTSIDE someone's house? And finally, there is nasty Trooper Pasquale, the local policewoman who has been uniformly nasty in 3 books, and has been unable to solve even one murder without Stan's help, suddenly and completely out of character agreeing with Stan's idea of unmasking the murderer.

I thought the characters where wonderful and colorful in true Twain fashion. It was quick and you were not made to lingure too long in one area. I really liked it a lot and I didn't think I would!

36 of 37 people found the following review helpful. Surprisingly Enjoyable! By K. Key I was very surprised how quickly I was drawn into this story. I had never heard of this book and it is now my favorite Twain. This story deals with children that were switched at birth; one a black slave and the other a well to do white. The characters are vivid and lively.

32 of 35 people found the following review helpful. The Tragedy of Puddnhead Wilson By A Customer I enjoyed this story overall. It is a bit of a mystery, not a who done it,but will the truth be reviled? There were a few spots that drug on a little longer than I would have liked but it gave you a better glimse into the sleepy town and its people setting. Do take note that it is an older story and slavery is a part of the story.

Paul Bowles’s classic collection of short stories, available in a deluxe paperback edition—part of Ecco’s Art of the Story series.

“All the tales are a variety of detective story,” wrote Bowles of this, his first short story collection, “in which the reader is the detective; the mystery is in the motivation for the characters’’ behavior.” In such stories as “A Distant Episode” and How Many Midnights,” Bowles pushes human character beyond socially defined limits and maps a transformed (often horribly transformed) reality.

Bowles captures the duality of human frailty and cruelty in these seventeen taut and atmospheric tales, written between 1939 and 1949. Brutal and gorgeous, visceral yet perceptive, this timeless collection is “one of the most profound, beautifully wrought, and haunting collections in our literature. . . at once austere, witty, violent, and sensuous. . . . His language has a purity of line, a poise and authority entirely its own, capable of instantly modulating from farce to horror without a ruffle” (Tobias Wolff).

The Delicate Prey Deluxe Edition: And Other Stories (Art of the Story), by Paul Bowles

Amazon.com Review Paul Bowles once said that a story should remain taut throughout, like a piece of string. That tense, stretched tone is the key to this collection of 17 eerie tales by the author best known for The Sheltering Sky. The Delicate Prey is dedicated: "For my mother, who first read me the stories of Poe." If Poe had lived in Mexico, and he'd had ice water running in his veins to counteract his feverish romanticism, he might have crafted something like these odd vignettes about human frailty and cruelty. The setting is a world where palm trees are like "shiny green spiders," where bats reel silently overhead in a jet-black sky, where a hot, relentless wind blows across deserted plazas.

As Tobias Wolff writes in Esquire, "The Delicate Prey is in fact one of the most profound, beautifully wrought, and haunting collections in our literature.... Bowles's tales are at once austere, witty, violent, and sensuous. They move with the inevitability of myth. His language has a purity of line, a poise and authority entirely its own, capable of instantly modulating from farce to horror without a ruffle."

Review "Paul Bowles has opened the world of Hip. He let in the murder, the drugs, the incest, the death of the Square...the call of the orgy, the end of civilization."--Norman Mailer""The Delicate Prey" is in fact one of the most profound, beautifully wrought, and haunting collections in our literature, ...Bowles's tales are at once austere, witty, violent, and sensuous. They move with the inevitability of myth. His language has a purity of line, a pise and authority entirely its own, capable of instantly modulating from farce to horror without a ruffle and without giving any signal of delight in itself. It never goes on parade."--Tobia Wolff, "Esquire""Paul Bowles's sense of what can go wrong is as acute as that of any American writer since Poe. It's not simply the subject matter but the pitiless clarity, the unblinking regard in the face of human frailty and cruelty, that is so disquieting in Bowles's work. Whereas the terror in Poe seems to arise from an overheated romantic imagination suffering the torments it bodies forth, Bowles's sensibility is calssical in is aloofness, his prose as hard-edged and dazzling as a desert landscape at noon."--Jay McInerney, "Vanity Fair"

From the Back Cover

From master storyteller Paul Bowles comes a new addition to ecco's the art of the story series—"essential reading" for any witness to the magic of the short form, writes vendela vida

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. A Stunning Collection! By A Customer This is a must-read for anyone interested in 20th century American literature. An absolutely stunning collection of tales that provoke, disturb and intoxicate the reader. Bowles writes in a style that is almost clinical: dry, precise and elegant, which accentuates the horrors he describes all the more. Hailed by such writers and Gore Vidal and Norman Mailer as a modern classic, you should not fail to read it if you have not already done so. And if enjoyed this title, check out The Sheltering Sky and Let it Come Down.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Outside Civilizations Walls By Doug Anderson "Delicate Prey", the title story, is one of the most memorable stories I've ever encountered. This story of a young flute player and his uncles who are Arab traders crossing a remote desert region begins innocently enough but soon a stranger appears on the horizon who comes closer and closer. This desert episode is told with a perfect accumulation of atmospheric detail and just the barest amount of human detail to place this tale in the realm of myth. The tale involves many things that will later appear in Bowles' other short fictions including hashish and flute music and other things that will go unmentioned so as not to spoil their discovery by new readers. "At Paso Rojo" is a story set in South America on a ranch. There two sisters go after their mothers death to live with their brother. As the sisters settle in one sister especially decides she wants to live a freer life than women in the cities are allowed to live and she begins to allow herself liberties that shock her more conservative sister. As she rides through the wild jungle her horse bolts and the sensations she has impart to the reader that hers is no ordinary psychology. Used to suppressing her sexuality while her mother was alive she begins to explore her power as a woman and as events unfold we see that this power has sprouted something in her that cannot be mistaken for anything but pure evil. Every story in this collection presents striking locales and lurid acts. The appeal of them is partly in the exoticism of the locales and partly in the allure of the lurid. Bowles aesthetic is a strange one but his tales could not be delivered with any more force. The collection is dedicated to Poe, and appropriately so, but the depth of the psychological examination of different kinds of pathologies lend these stories a power that magnifies their effect beyond mere horror stories. They are stories of modern psyches with the superficial but protective veneer of civilization removed.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Strange, morbid and fascinating By D. P. Birkett Not everyone will enjoy thse weird stories mostly set in Mexico or Morocco. They contain violence and, in a way, sex, although sex is never explicitly described. They almost always end in disaster, sometimes grotesque and cruel disaster. The sexual element is never quite straight heterosexual attraction between consenting adults. A frequent plot is that someone is invited somewhere by a host who becomes hostile or takes a journey following an unreliable guide that ends badly. Think DH Lawrence, Joyce Carol Oates, Roald Dahl, Truman Capote and, as regards the prose style. maybe even Raymond Carver He is a minimalist with a way of bringing an exotic setting to life in half a sentence without an adjective or adverb. A remarkable thing is how long ago the stories were written and how modern the style seems.

NATIONAL BESTSELLERIn Emily March’s new novel set in her beloved Eternity Springs, a woman who has given up on dreams of a family meets a man who needs her to complete his own.   Town physician Rose Anderson hides a well of sadness behind her cheerful and capable professionalism. Heartbreak has only reinforced her belief that marriage and children aren’t in her future. Yet she’s a woman with a pulse—and when sexy, brooding artist Hunt Cicero shows up at her office with his young nephew, the sheer physical attraction he ignites in her is both exciting and unsettling.   Hunt has an artist’s passionate temperament and a bachelor’s lifestyle. So when he becomes guardian to his sister’s children, he’s riddled with conflict—and in way over his head. Without Rose and her warm maternal instincts, he’d be lost. Still, she’s a woman who guards her own heart, and he’s a novice when it comes to commitment. Can the healing magic of Eternity Springs shine on this patchwork family and allow Hunt and Rose to trust that  love is the fabric holding them together?   Praise for the Eternity Springs series   “With passion, romance, and revealing moments that will touch your heart, [March] takes readers on an unhurried journey where past mistakes are redeemed and a more beautiful future is forged—one miracle at a time.”—USA Today

Heat from the furnace burning at two thousand degrees hit like a fist, but he didn’t notice. The image of the sculpture drawn in pencil on the top sheet of his sketch-pad filled his mind.A long strand of hair, black as midnight, slipped from the leather cord tied at the nape of his neck and fell forward across his face, absorbing the bead of sweat that dribbled across the chiseled ridge of his cheekbone. Cicero ignored the moisture, just as he disregarded the visitors who entered his studio as he dipped the gather of molten glass in rock crystals of color.Wondering why Gabi Romano had shown up with his friend and her lover, Flynn Brogan, in tow, when she was supposed to be in Italy serving as an apprentice to the master glass artist, Alessandro Bovér, could wait. The image burning in his brain took precedence over everything. As he closed his lips around the end of the pipe and blew life into his work with a first puff of air, Gabi pulled her long, dark hair into a ponytail and stepped into the role of gaffer. Wordlessly, he accepted her assistance and blocked out everything but the work, losing himself in the seductive and compelling fog of creativity. For a stretch of time unmarked, the two worked in a silent and practiced ballet of motion, molding the glass, applying heat, shaping and blending and blowing.Hunter Cicero played with fire for a living and he was very, very good at it.The graceful figure in his mind gradually took shape in the glass. He vaguely noted when his own apprentice, Mitch Frazier, sauntered through the door and stopped in surprise upon seeing Flynn leaning against the wall, his arms casually folded. Mitch’s gaze swept from Flynn, toward the workbench where Cicero sat, and then to Gabi as she confidently extended the blowpipe into the furnace to reheat the glass. Mitch observed the work for a full two minutes before nodding with approval. He stepped forward and seamlessly joined the creative effort. The trio spent another forty minutes at work before Cicero decided the piece had taken final form. With a well-placed tap from a pair of metal jacks, he separated his sculpture from the punty, and it fell into Gabi’s gloved hands. He set the punty aside while his gaffer placed the work into the annealing oven to slowly cool to room temperature. Rising from his workbench, he grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge and drained it in one long draw.He switched off the music and spoke to Mitch first. “You were late.”“Sorry, Boss.” Mitch pulled the rubber band from his long Rastafarian braids, which allowed them to swing freely down past his shoulder blades. “I stayed out late last night and overslept.”“Use your alarm next time. Better yet, save the late nights for weekends. I don’t want you here when you’re tired. You’ll be careless and have an accident, and your mother will kill me.”The woman would do it, too. Cicero had barely made it off Bella Vita Isle alive after he’d convinced his apprentice to accompany to him to Galveston to help establish a hand-blown-glass studio that catered to the tourist trade.Cicero finally turned his gaze on Gabi, who stood twirling a long, dark curl around her finger, the light in her clear blue eyes timid. She offered him a tentative smile, and he scowled at her. The woman was too smart to be nervous; seeing her here did not make him happy.“Did you get lost on your way back to Italy?”Gabi visibly braced herself. “No, Cicero. I’m not sure I’m going back.”Her statement came as no real surprise. Cicero wasn’t stupid. Obviously, she and Flynn had reconciled, and she’d decided to cut her yearlong apprenticeship short— by nine months. Was she about to bail on the Eternity Springs project, too?Maybe, he thought, his stomach sinking. If she and Flynn were together, why wouldn’t she? The man had more money than Midas. Mindful of his not insubstantial investment in the small Colorado mountain town, and the stack of bills piling up on his desk, Cicero felt his temper rise.“What’s wrong with you, Legs? Working in Alessandro’s studio is the opportunity of a lifetime, one that countless other artists would kill for. What about all that talk you spouted about your dream and your passion? You’re going to throw it all away?”“I don’t intend to throw anything away,” she replied, her chin coming up. “I said I wasn’t sure that I was returning to Italy. Cicero, last summer you came to me with a business proposal. Now I’m coming to you to propose a modification to that plan. Will you sit down and discuss it with me?”Annoyed at the flash of relief over her assurance, he allowed his frown to deepen and shot a glance toward Flynn. “Are you part of her scheme?”Flynn lifted his hands, palms out. “I’m an interested bystander, here to support you both.”Honesty glimmered in his friend’s eyes, so Cicero hooked his thumb toward the small room off the studio where an old, gray metal desk and two ratty chairs sat piled high with paper. To Mitch, he said, “I need you to shift the Valentine’s Day goblets for Beachcomber’s Gifts to the top of your work list.”“Really?” Surprise glinted in the young man’s brown eyes. “I delivered a dozen of them last week.”“Yeah, well, yesterday a seven-year-old went on a rampage in the shop.”“Oh, mon!” Mitch exclaimed, the Caribbean strong in his voice. “Kids are such a . . .” His words trailed off when he noted the pain in Cicero’s expression. “Wait. Was it—?”“Keenan.” His seven-year-old menace of a nephew.Mitch winced. “I’ll get right on ’em, boss. No worries.”“No worries,” Cicero repeated in a mutter, as he followed Gabi and Flynn into his office. He cleared a stack of manila folders off a chair so Gabi could sit, then opened the small refrigerator and pulled out bottles of water. He tossed one to Flynn, another to Gabi, and took one for himself before clearing off the chair behind the desk and taking a seat. He twisted the lid off his water bottle, drained half of it in one drink, then said, “Bottom line it, Romano. What do you want?”“First I’d like to explain why I want what I want. You see—”Cicero interrupted. “It’s the middle of a workday and I have an appointment at two. I don’t have time for explanations. Cut to the chase, Gabriella.”“Okay. Well.”She wiped her palms on her jeans and despite himself, Cicero was tempted to smile. Ordinarily, Gabriella Romano was one of the most self-assured women he’d ever met. The only other time he’d seen her like this she’d been working up the nerve to ask him to teach her to blow glass.“Spit it out.”She nodded, then spoke in a rush. “Instead of returning to Italy to finish out my apprenticeship, I want to divide my time between Texas and Colorado. Here in Galveston I’ll work and learn with you and Mitch like I did on Bella Vita. I’ll use my time in Eternity Springs to concentrate on getting the retail shop ready to open in time for the upcoming tourist season.”Cicero took another long sip from his water bottle while he considered her idea. His initial reaction was annoyance. He’d called in a favor to get her the spot in Alessandro’s studio. He didn’t like to see her bail. Scowling, he asked, “What does Alessandro say about that? You came home for Christmas, not for the Fourth of July. I trust you let him know your plane didn’t go down on your return flight?”“Of course. I called him. He’s fine with the idea. He thinks you can teach me everything I’ll need to know because”—she paused, grimaced, and muttered—“this is more humiliating to repeat to you than I had anticipated.”She inhaled deeply, exhaled in a rush, then said, “Alessandro tells me I’ll never be an artist, so I can learn everything I need to know from you.”Ouch.Cicero pursed his lips. “I can’t decide if that’s more an insult to me or to you.”“Me, definitely,” she replied, a whine in her voice. “He thinks you’re the Second Coming of Chihuly, while I’m competent and enthusiastic, a hard worker, entertaining company and lovely to look at, but I don’t have fire for the fire.”Sounded like Alessandro realized he wasn’t getting in her pants. Cicero had told him from the beginning not to expect a conquest. He sat back in his chair and gave her a thorough once-over. Except for her obvious nervousness, she looked great. Her time in Italy had agreed with her, though he suspected that Flynn had more to do with her sparkle than anything. Had he been wrong in his judgment of her passion for glass?“Do you agree with his assessment?”“Absolutely not!” Gabi made no attempt to hide her annoyance. “I have plenty of fire. But I also have family. I missed them.”He shouldn’t be surprised. By the end of her first week in his studio on the island, Cicero had known that Gabi came from a tight-knit clan. She talked about them incessantly. As someone who’d grown up in the foster care system, he’d been both attracted to and repelled by the way the Romanos appeared to live in one another’s pockets.“I was homesick,” Gabi continued. “Last year was—difficult.”Flynn rested a supportive hand on Gabi’s shoulder, and said, “Difficult is an understatement. Gabi’s scars aren’t as visible as mine, but—”“Last year was a bitch for you both,” Cicero interrupted. “I get that.”It had been one of the factors behind his decision to approach Alessandro on Gabi’s behalf. In May, Gabi had been aboard Flynn’s sailing yacht in the Caribbean when it was set upon by pirates. She had taken one man’s life that day; Flynn had killed two. The fallout from the event had wounded Gabi’s heart, and all but destroyed Flynn, but they had fought their way back to health and now, apparently, to each other.“You’ve been a great friend to both of us, Cicero,” Gabi said, her tone heartfelt. “Flynn and I both recognize and treasure that. And the opportunity you gave me—it’s been magical.”“So magical that you’re ready to throw it aside?”“Not at all. I’m not saying that at all. If you don’t get on board with this idea, then I’ll go back to Italy.”“We will go,” Flynn said. “I can work anywhere.”Gabi flashed Flynn a quick, intimate smile, then returned an imploring gaze to Cicero. “But I’d rather we be in Eternity Springs. It’s where my heart is whole and where my fire is free to burn. Alessandro is a fine teacher, Cicero, but so are you. Maybe he’s right and I’ll never produce gallery-quality work. But it’s also possible that he’s wrong. Maybe if I’m home and happy and surrounded by loved ones, I’ll be able to create something spectacular. Eternity Springs is a special place. Just ask Sage Rafferty. She’ll be the first to say that living in Eternity Springs inspires her work.”Sage Rafferty owned the town’s art gallery and had made a name for herself in the art world for her boldly colored, whimsical paintings. She’d spoken enthusiastically about her hometown and its influence on her work in an interview he’d read in an art scene magazine recently. Cicero knew better than to dismiss the power of inner peace for an artist. Wasn’t the lack of it showing in his work these days? And yet, his obligations to Jayne caused him to miss so much studio time lately that he didn’t see how he could commit to teaching Gabi anything.“My hours here aren’t regular. It’ll take you eight years to learn from me what Alessandro would teach you in eight months.”“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but you underestimate yourself, Cicero.”That coaxed a grin from him. Underestimating himself had never been an issue of his.“Cute, Romano.”“You also have more patience with your apprentices, and that makes it easier to learn.”“You lose a point there. I’m not patient at all.”“I didn’t say you had an abundance of patience. I said you had more than Alessandro.” She leaned forward in her chair, her blue eyes gleaming earnestly. “I know this plan slows down my progress, but it also allows me to be around to watch my nieces and nephew grow. I didn’t realize how much that mattered to me until I left home. They change so fast, especially that first year. I don’t want to miss it.”“So you’re giving up your opportunity for kids? Somebody else’s kids, at that?”“This from the man who traded the aquamarine of the Caribbean for Gulf of Mexico gray in order to be nearer to his sister and her children?”Cicero’s gaze shifted to the stack of invoices on his desk. Houston Oncology. MD Anderson Cancer Center. Physician’s Services.“The two situations are completely different.”Gabi’s eyes softened with sympathy. “How is Jayne doing?”“Good,” he replied, trying to believe it. “She’s good.” Then, to ward off any further questions about his sister, he added, “You can watch kids grow by viewing pictures on the Internet. You don’t have to be in the same town.”“But I want to be in the same town. I recognize that it’s a trade-off. Life is a series of trade-offs. I can be passionate about glass and passionate about people, too. I’m searching for the right balance between the two. I know you understand that. You would never have left Bella Vita otherwise.”No, balance had nothing to do with his return to the United States, though he did understand the concept.“I can be of help to you here in Texas, Cicero. My training in Italy was intense. I’m good enough now for tourist work. You can shift things like Valentine’s Day goblets to me, and free Mitch up to help you with your work.”Cicero sat back in his chair. “You have it all figured out, don’t you?”“I’ve put a lot of thought into it, and—oh.” She snapped her fingers. “I forgot to mention one other applicable point. The remodel schedule. I know you’ve had trouble with the contractor you hired. Harold Benton does fabulous work but as he’s gotten older, he’s really slowed down. With someone on hand to encourage him, you’ll get better, faster results. Especially if that someone is me. He owes me.”“Why?”She pursed her lips. “Let’s just say that when I worked as a sheriff’s deputy, I used my discretionary power in his favor.”“Always handy to have the law in one’s corner, I guess.” Cicero picked up a pen and drummed the tip against the desktop. Gabi, her arguments made, sat back in her seat and waited quietly, though judging by the nervous tapping of her toes, less than patiently. Flynn’s attention drifted to the studio where Mitch removed a gather of glass from the furnace.Cicero surveyed the clutter on his desktop and mentally shifted his money around. No matter how many ways he shuffled, he always came up short. Times had certainly changed since last summer when he committed to the Colorado studio. As someone lucky enough to have had only rare dealings with the medical industry prior to this, he’d been woefully naïve about the financial costs of exceptional treatment. In hindsight, he should have never jumped into the Eternity Springs expansion so fast.Getting the Eternity Springs store stocked and open for the tourist season could be a godsend to his cash flow. He’d already sunk a pretty penny into purchasing the old church property and starting the remodel. Most of the materials were paid for. He still had some credit left. Maybe once Harold Benton finished up the loft apartment where he’d planned to stay during his visits, he could rent it out. Get someplace cheap to live. He didn’t need much. Maybe—Maybe he could think of something more self-serving than to agree to Gabi’s proposition, but he’d have to try damned hard.Murano. Venice. Italy. The three years he’d spent there had molded him into the artist he was today. That training showed in every piece he produced. She simply didn’t know yet how important this time was to her art.He tossed his pen onto the desk. “Gabi, I don’t agree with Alessandro. I’ve seen pictures of the work you’ve been producing, and I believe you do have the talent to be an exceptional glass artist. I would be doing you a disservice if I agreed to this. Alessandro is—”“Not as good as you,” she interrupted. “He might have more experience and a flashier reputation and a studio in the most famous glass city in the world, but Alessandro isn’t as good as you are. He will never inspire me the way you do.”The vehemence in her tone, along with the declaration itself, took him aback. What had Alessandro been thinking to say the woman lacked fire? Flynn Brogan is a lucky man. Then, just to goad her, he arched a brow toward Flynn. “You let your woman say such things to another man?”“Let me!” Gabi exclaimed.Flynn laughed. “Gabriella Romano is very much her own woman, as you well know. It’s one of the reasons why we both love her.”“True enough.” He gave her a wolfish once-over and added, “I should never have yielded the field to you, Brogan.”Flynn’s expression oozed self-satisfaction. “Doesn’t matter. You never stood a chance with her.”“Confident of yourself, aren’t you?”“Excuse me. I’m sitting right here!”Both men ignored that.Cicero recognized the instant when Flynn’s gaze went from amused to serious. He propped a hip on the corner of Cicero’s desk, and his voice resonated with sincerity as he said, “I’m confident in her. As so should you be. Our Gabi is loyal and honest and insightful. She has excellent instincts. She is passionate about her work and passionate about her world. Listen to her. Trust her. Believe in her.”Cicero absently fanned the corner of the stack of invoices on his desk, and in an uncommon moment of openness replied, “I’m afraid I’ve lost the ability to believe in much of anything.”Gabi reached out and covered his hand with hers. “In that case, you need to get to Colorado as quickly as possible. I know it sounds corny, but you can believe in the magic of Eternity Springs.”“It changed my life,” Flynn agreed. “It can change yours, too.”“I don’t need magic. I need a miracle.”Gabi’s smile went as bright as the furnace. “Hey, we do miracles, too. Just ask my sister-in-law, Hope.”Before Cicero could respond to that, a colorful whirlwind of noise and motion burst through the studio’s front door.“Uncle Skunk!” Seven-year-old Keenan exclaimed. “Where are you, Uncle Skunk?”“Hey, Uncle Hunk,” called nine-year-old Misty. “Wait until you hear what happened at school!”The sister of his heart, Jayne Prochaska, carried two-year-old Daisy in her arms and offered him an apologetic smile. “Junior? I’m so sorry, but Amy isn’t answering her phone and I need to run into Houston. Could you watch the kids for a little bit?”“Unc Nooner!” Five-year-old Galen exclaimed. “Do you have any candy?”“Uncle Nooner?” Flynn repeated, his brows arched and his lips twitching. “Man, am I going to have fun with that.”Cicero opened his mouth, then shut it. What could he possibly say? Some things that came from a four-year-old’s mouth simply went beyond explanation. He closed his eyes briefly, shook his head, then grasped the lifeline Gabi had offered. “I’ll agree to your proposal on one condition.”Warily, she asked, “What’s that?”“Babysitting.”She narrowed her eyes warily. “How much babysitting?”“I won’t abuse you. Much.”Gabi made a theatrical grimace, though he could tell her heart was singing. “All right, we have a deal, Uncle Hunk.”

I love Eternity Springs and all the characters you have created. Every book gets better and better and every damn book I cry!Thank you for writing such wonderful people. Thank you for creating stories of places and people that I would be honored to know. I am so thankful that Netgalley and your publishers allowed me to read and review this. I let it sit on my shelf of TBR until closer to the date of release because I wanted to savor the book. I almost didn't want to read it because then it would end and I don't know how long we will have to wait for the next one. But oh I am so glad that I was able to read it and savor it.Teardrop Lane is the latest book about Eternity Springs, a place that Emily March has created. Her characters are three dimensional and I so enjoy visiting them every time I read one of the books. This book mostly takes place in Eternity Springs which not all of the books have done, and it revolves around Dr. Rose who we met in a previous book and Hunt Cicero, an artist and glassblower whom we had previously met too. Their journey to their HEA was hard and wonderful and pulled all of the right strings in my heart. If you love a wonderful contemporary romance, small town characters and wonderful writing, please read these books.

Ms. March has a deft hand and creates complex relationships that are more than the sum of their parts By Shauni Originally Reviewed For: Bodice Rippers, Femme Fatales and FantasyWhen I read Luke, by Emily March, I had no clue the wonderful adventure that I was embarking on. I enjoyed it so much that when I saw Teardrop Lane on netgalley, I just knew I had to get it. Only it was book NINE!!Seriously NINE.. how did I ever miss this series? I decided that if at all possible, I would begin at the beginning and there my love for Eternity Springs was formed.Eternity Springs is a place that believes in the magic of love. They true magic, it was a town slowly dying until one woman began to make a difference. A woman, Celeste Blessing.. yeah you got it Celestial Blessing.. who told people to start appreciating what they had and to enjoy God's blessings.Slowly the town has transformed and each couple that faces their inner demons, that lets love lead them and keeps an open mind and heart is rewarded with not just a true love but they get a pair of wings, made from silver (made from the 30 pieces of silver found with a woman's body).Teardrop Lane tells the story of Rose Anderson and Hunt (a temperamental artist) . It once again proves that love really does conquer all, if you let it.Rose Anderson came to Eternity Springs, broken and desperate to reconnect with her sister. A sister who at one time was the most important person in her life. Only bad choices, death and illness split them apart. Since arriving in Eternity Springs her relationship with her sister, Sage has mended and Rose has healed. But she would still like to find love. Who knew a temperamental, egotistical artist would be the man who captured her attention.Hunt is a man who stands alone. A difficult childhood filled with foster homes and broken promises has left him afraid to connect. His only constant in his life was his "sister", a girl he met in foster care and the two declared themselves siblings. Only she has died and now Hunt has promised to be there for her four children. He is possessed with paying her medical bills and making sure the kids have a financially secure future. Only now, the couple who promised to raise them have changed their minds.. and Hunt being the man he is steps up. Only what does this man know about children? Or family for that matter? Fearing that the children could destroy the burgeoning relationship with Dr Rose, Hunt discovers that instead it brings them all together.Of course all is not simple in this relationship but Hunt and Rose are determined to find their way. And Emily March creates a beautiful family, six individuals who learn the true meaning of love, amidst the Colorado Rockies. This is one of those stories that could easily fall into the cheesy catagories but Ms. March has a deft hand and creates complex relationships that are more than the sum of their parts.I am totally enchanted with this series and Teardrop Lane just proves that it keeps getting better and better. For those of you who haven't read the series, Carmen has begun slowly reviewing this series on our Turnback Tuesday post.. so far she has reviewed Angel's Rest but I know she plans to catch us all up.While I rarely recommend this, if you want to start now, then start now, Teardrop Lane reads beautifully as a stand alone..ShauniThis review is based on the ARC of Teardrop Lane, provided by netgalley

You feel as if you are reading about family. You reconnect with characters from previous books. This installment is about Cicero and Rose. Cicero is an artist with the temperament to match. Surprisingly, he has a soft side that did not come through in the book before this one. When his sister becomes sick he steps up and you can't help but like a man with a sweet, caring side. Rose is a physician who is not looking for love. Sometimes that is the best way to find it by simply not looking for it. You can read this book as a stand alone but I really think you will enjoy it more if you have read the previous ones

A sweeping story of tangled passion and courage, The Maven Trap seamlessly weaves together the lives of several of characters. Lionel Robbins is the intelligent but spoiled son of an indulgent mother. Early in life, he receives an unexpected inheritance which not only alters his life but many others. Lionel is an idealist who believes primarily in the will of people, and lives by the mantra "all or nothing". To make compromises is therefore difficult, or by his moral standards questionable at best. His visions are great, but his judgment of others is often harsh and unfair. The Maven Trap is a meditation on love---love as a tragic, incomprehensible and unpredictable force of nature.

About the Author Kelly Foxton is a former country music recording artist who recorded numerous single hits and duets on RCA Records with Hank Snow, one of country music's pioneers. She performed for years on the Grand Ole Opry and traveled all over Europe with Box Car Willie, England's Entertainer of the Year. Later, Foxton put together her own Las Vegas act for cruise ships and conventions and received “The Great American Citation for Patriotism and World Peace” for her work as “The Military Pin-Up Queen” when she traveled to military installations around the globe. Now, Foxton has decided to continue her mission of boosting troop morale by photographing her pet squirrel in cute military shots. With more than 6,000 photos of Sugar Bush in more than 4,000 outfits and a massive Internet following, Kelly was recently featured on TLC's My Crazy Obsession. She and Sugar Bush live in Boca Raton, FL.

By 231326 It takes time and effort to create something that is this visually pleasing. The photographs sometimes make me ask the question, "how did she get that squirrel to pose like that?" It's got humor and cute in good taste. Perhaps as inventive are the various costumes that Sugarbush is dressed in; clearly this is a labor of love, because the production value is amazing. The physical format of the book is similar to a children's picture book, which makes it easy for a young audience to look through. The level of humor is enough to make the adult laugh, while being totally appropriate to share with anyone. Well done! This hardcover edition was built solidly, and the pages are glossy color, which really makes the photographs look great.

I'm glad that I was able to order mine before they sold out. I have followed the antics of this little fuzzer for close to fifteen years now. The book has lots of great pics of Sugar Bush, and is put together with entertaining and humorous text. This makes a great gift for kids, and a must have for the older squirrel fans out there.

Would definitely recommend for children, unless you're uncomfortable with your child being exposed to marijuana references and imagery, which appears when Sugar Bush visits Jamaica.

Excellent read By NicksName Great tale with well crafted, plausible characters moving between the disparate worlds of the Vietnam War and Corporate Australia from the 1960's to the early 1990's. The central character, Michael Doyle, is a man of diverse talents, who keeps the reader intrigued about how he will react to the next challenge life throws his way. Hoping to see a sequel to this one...

It has a lot of pages covering the topic and various pictures to back up what’s being said. I was never good at woodworking, but I think there is a lot that can be learned from this book. I liked it.
