After spending two years searching for a dog food that one of her dogs could handle, Kimberly Gauthier transitioned all of her dogs to raw feeding. This book is a compilation of blog posts from her blog, Keep the Tail Wagging, sharing what she learned during her second year as a raw feeder, using the alphabet as a guide. "After two years of soft stool (not easy to pick up with a poop bag), licking his paws until they were raw, joint pain, and random, gnarly rashes, yeast infections, and ear infections - I had to make a change, because my dog was miserable. How many times can a dog be prescribed antibiotics before serious damage was done? I switched our dogs to raw dog food and saw immediate changes." Raw dog food is an attempt to mimic the diet of the Grey Wolf. Kimberly follows the BARF Model of raw feeding that includes meat, organ meat, bone, vegetables, fruit, and supplements. Within the first week of feeding raw, her dog's rashes cleared up. Now, more than two years later, her dogs haven't had rashes or ear infections. Poop is solid and easy to pick up with a poop bag. And her dogs' joints are healthy and protected. Many people talk about the "anecdotal" evidence of the benefits of raw feeding. Kimberly is sharing a real life experience feeding a raw food diet to four dogs on her blog, Keep the Tail Wagging, and in this book. If you're interested in a down to earth book on raw feeding delivered in a casual, non pushy manner, this book may be perfect for you.

Well-researched and practical advice on raw feeding By Pawesome Cats Kimberly has an honest, up-front and very approachable style, which makes Raw Feeding from A-Z an easy and inspiring read! The principles of raw feeding are the same for cats and dogs. It’s important to feed a species appropriate diet, rotating proteins is vital to provide balanced nutrition and reduce the risk of allergies and intolerances, and supplements are essential. As Kimberly points out, one of the reasons that so many vets are anti-raw is because the only time they see a raw fed dog is when the dog is unwell, and this is usually because the owner hasn’t understood the importance of feeding a balanced raw diet.Cat and dog parents also have the same concerns about feeding a raw food diet – they think it’s too difficult or time-consuming to prepare, they worry about cost and they have fears about bacterial contamination. Kimberly addresses these issues with sensible and well-researched advice. For dog owners, this e-book has a ton of practical advice including the use of prebiotics, probiotics and digestive enzymes for dogs; how to tempt picky eaters (they’re not so different from fussy feline eaters after all!), smart options for saving money when feeding raw, and lists of recommended suppliers based on what Kimberly feeds her own pack. After you’ve read this book you’ll want to do your own research and learn all that you can about nutrition and raw feeding to give your pet the best chance at a long, healthy and happy life.

Beyond Redemption, by Michael R. Fletcher

Review “Set in a world where madness equates to power, Michael R. Fletcher’s Beyond Redemption is often as nightmarish as it is fascinating. An alarming, original and compulsive tale laced with a blackly comic sensibility. Highly recommended.” (Anthony Ryan, New York Times bestselling author of Blood Song, on BEYOND REDEMPTION)“Fletcher populated the landscape with an array of mental disorders, turning a well-thumbed psychiatric manual into a dramatis personae…The dystopia and its victims never quite collapse under the weight of the horror, and their perseverance encourages the readers to endure the grimness until the thought-provoking conclusion.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review) on BEYOND REDEMPTION)“The journey is dark and emotionally taxing, but there aren’t many fantasy novels as smart, ambitious, and excellently written as this one.” (Booklist on BEYOND REDEMPTION)

About the Author

Michael R. Fletcher is a Canadian writer whose first novel, 88, was published by Five Rivers Publishing, a small Canadian press. His short fiction can be found in Interzone, On Spec, Daily Science Fiction, Heroic Fantasy Quarterly, and Arcane. This novel grew out of his desire to write something outside of the normal tropes of fantasy, and his contemplation of rare mental disorders (like Cotard's Syndrome) in a fantasy context.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Forget grim dark, this is mad dark . . . and it's awesome By Bob Milne R. Scott Bakker. Steven Erikson. Peter Watts. When you think of dark, epic, mind-bending genre fiction from north of the 49th parallel, these gentlemen are the undisputed masters. It may be uncharacteristically bold and presumptuous to demand that a new name be added to that list so soon in his career, but I'll be damned if Michael R. Fletcher hasn't earned it.Seriously, Beyond Redemption really is that good. When I first snagged an ARC of this about six months ago, I was definitely intrigued . . . but hesitant. Building an epic fantasy around madness, faith, and delusion sounded very cool. I was optimistic, but I also had my doubts. We're talking high-concept here, and I was worried that the narrative would suffer from the strain of trying to sustain the threads of madness. In fact, I'd almost talked myself out of taking that chance when, on a whim, I decided to give the first few chapters a cursory read. A few vulgar, violent, vehement exclamations of approval later, I was well-and-truly hooked. Beyond Redemption absolutely blew me away. It is indeed dark, grim, and gritty, but it's wild imagination is just as often manifested in moments of bleak, black humor. As for what it's about, this is the story of three men - one who would make a god, one who would steal a god, and one who would kill a god.Konig is the man who would make a god. As the High Priest of the Geborene Damonen, he is a proudly deluded theocratic ruler who, quite literally, is his own worst enemies. Beset by a trio of Doppels (doppelgangers) who represent his fears and insecurities, he's also victim of his own murderously rebellious reflections. Bedeckt is the man who would steal a god. An ailing, over-the-hill warrior who should already be dead, he's kept alive by the deluded belief that one last heist will change everything. He likes to think of himself as being the only sane man in a mad world, but the truth is that his delusions are just more subtle and integral to his personality. Erbrechen is the man who would kill a god. He is a fat, ugly, reprehensible madman, a Slaver by the power of his own delusions. He has merely to be carried through a town, to say a few words, and hundreds feel compelled to follow their new leader and best friend. By compelled, I mean hopelessly and helpless devoted to a man who, with a word, can rob them of the power to see, sleep, or s***, driven by nothing more than his desire for self-amusement.Before we talk any more about the characters or their deeds, I have to address the impressive level of world-building here. Fletcher spent a great deal of time inventing his world, creating the rules for its madness, and defining the outcome of each unique delusion. There are nearly twenty unique categories of delusion to his world, from Cotardists who believe they are dead (complete with rotting flesh and missing internal organs) to Somatoparaphrenics who believe portions of their body belong to someone else (causing limbs and organs to develop minds of their own). They are all defined by their inevitable pursuit of the Pinnacle, the point at which they truly lose their grip on reality, coming to be defined by their delusions, leaving them powerful enough to challenge the gods, but incapable of doing anything with that power. This is a world where the collective belief of a group of people can, quite literally, remake the landscape around them. It sounds bizarre - and it is - but Fletcher makes it all work, allowing the reader accept the power of madness as easily as we do that of magic and prayer in more traditional fantasy. The pacing here is just about perfect, careening along from one scene to another with madcap intensity. There are moments of deep philosophical reflection, but they're part and parcel of the story, not asides or info dumps. The narrative is exceptionally strong as well, making use of two languages (English and German) to weave a story that flows across the page, even if it doesn't quite flow off the tongue. The action is intense, with beautiful moments of blood and brutality, and awe-inspiring feats of madness and delusion. Seriously, with the kind of power we're talking about here, you expect some truly epic feats of destruction, and Fletcher offers them aplenty. Most importantly, the grand finale pays off in every respect, bringing together all the various characters, themes, delusions, and events in a climax that defines epic. Of course, there's also a massive cliffhanger that offers a maddening tease of the sequel, but it does nothing to negate the ending here, instead opening up a new storyto come.If you're at all curious, and are open to a story that challenges your intellect while delighting your imagination, then I urge you to give Beyond Redemption a read.

By Wendell Exquisite mayhem and madness, "Beyond Redemption" is a novel which appears once every few years; a harbinger of things to come that takes the familiar fantasy tropes and twists them into something fresh and original. Like Joe Abercrombie’s "The First Law" or Mark Lawrence’s "Broken Empire", Mr. Fletcher has now become a trailblazer, breaking away from the traditional path of epic fantasy as he crafts a world full of grimdark characters, delicious madness, and stunning magic. A new path which future grimdark novels will be forced to follow, because "Beyond Redemption" has just made grimdark even grimmer. The descent into magical madness begins right from the first page."The old gods were broken by wars and plagues of the mind, left reeling like the most bloodied veterans. Infected with horror at the cost of their actions, they retreated into dementia … Seeking to free themselves, they fled to a world of delusion, a world uncorrupted by jealousies and psychoses. And yet, in the end, even this they would pollute."From this ominous setup, Mr. Fletcher introduces a land where reality is literally created by the madness and delusion of gifted (or insane, you have to decide) people. This insanity coming in many, many forms. There are Geisteskranken, whose psychoses actually transform the world around them; their madness becoming reality for normal people. Hassebrands are pyromaniacs, burning people to ash when their control slips. Kleptics can steal from anyone, no matter how vigilant they protect themselves. Cotardist become near indestructible assassins, as they already believe they are dead, so they are impossible to kill. Doppelgangist create duplicates of themselves, who then go out to act independently of their creators. Then there are the Gefahrgeists, who are sociopaths, gaining strength from those that worship them. And so many more.Naturally, the world where these crazed magicians create their warped versions of reality is a dark place to live. Abandoned by the gods, left to delude themselves into creating whatever world they wish, the inhabitants of this land are in a perpetual flux of being; the nature of the world constantly shifting as mad magicians rise in power or eventually lose themselves in their own delusions, causing all their work to crash down around them.If only there was a way to stop the perpetual evolution of reality? Control it somehow. Then an eternal paradise could be created for humanity.Oh, but there is a way. At least Konig Furimmer, an immensely powerful Geisteskranken, believes there is. All he has to do is create his own god; one who will serve him and rescue him from the inevitable madness of using his powers. Then the Geborene Damonen religion Konig has created can spread across the world and bring peace and prosperity to everyone.Only one problem with Konig’s plan. First, he has to create a being so perfect, so pliable, and so trusting that when it is his time to die (Gods can only become gods by being killed and ascending to their godhood in this world.) he will willingly go to the sacrificial altar. Second, Konig has to be the one who kills him, because only by slaying him can he force this risen god to obey him.Brilliant scheme. Unfortunately, there are always unexpected hurdles to overcome in any situation. Konig’s problem turns out to be something so simple he overlooked the possibility of it arising: outsiders.Just when everything seems to be ready for Konig to create his god, a trio of drifters led by Bedeckt arrive in the land. This aged warrior is as sane as they come, troubling so; he is also a desperate man, who is looking for one last big score to set him up for retirement. Following him are his very untrustworthy companions: Wichtig, the “Greatest Swordsman in the World” and Stehlen, a Kleptic who will steal your s***e and cut your throat before you even know it is occurring. When these three ride in and hear that a god is about to be created, Bedeckt immediately recognizes a way to end all his financial worries forever! The tale that follows is grimdark at its grimmest and darkest. Nearly every character is vile beyond imagining. Insanity permeates every facet of the story. Mindless violence and very deliberate torture are present everywhere. People fight; people enslave others; and some people live in their own magically created hells. Decent people do atrocious things. Some really insane people do decent things. Plus, nothing is as it seems, because this whole place – the buildings, the farms, the people, everything – is a delusion of the criminally insane after all.All in all, "Beyond Redemption" doesn’t sound like the type of story which I usually enjoy, but I did like it – immensely, in fact. Mr. Fletcher does such an amazing job crafting this morbid tale that I couldn’t stop turning the pages. His writing style effortlessly balancing between detailed and fast paced, somehow capturing the depth of the delusions, presenting the appalling dark side of worldwide insanity, and yet constantly convincing me to follow him down the path of madness to its inevitable conclusion.Wildly imaginative, addictively entertaining, and morbidly dark, "Beyond Redemption" is a grimdark fantasy that more people should give a try. I know, madness can be intimidating, but once you get a taste of Mr. Fletcher’s fantasy version, you will see just how delicious it really is.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Highly reccomended By Marcus This is a fantastic read. I'm loathe to give it 5 stars as the Amazon rankings are so flooded by fake praise, but it really does deserve it and so voila, 5 stars it is.It's a difficult book to explain other than it's decidedly Grimdark in nature, but unlike some of Abercrombie's novels where I thought he went a little too bleak with the characters, despite certain characters meeting their unfortunate ends, it finished in such a way that it opened the door for more crazy adventures to come.Ultimately the plot is based around two concepts: 1. if you kill someone they are forced to serve you in the afterdeath (but you are in turn forced to serve who killed you - ie an insane, never-ending cycle). 2. By creating a God through belief and killing it, this God will then serve you. Of course it goes far deeper than that, but that's the foundations of how it all begins. But the real joy of this book is the way the author skillfully deals with insanity - effectively everyone is afflicted with varying degrees of mental illness, but these delusional beings are empowered with abilities. The more insane they are the stronger they become until such time that they lose it and become all-powerful before meeting their end. It's just such an interesting and refreshingly different concept. And more - the author has gone with a German naming system which perfectly matches it (unless you're German unfortunately in which case the book reads in an odd way).In the early parts of the book I was uncertain as this is most definitely not a pleasant world to be visiting. It's dark, grimy and full of phlegm (literally!) - but damn if it's not an interesting story with an entire cast of interesting, highly sympathetic characters. Of particular interest was the intrigue and scheming of the various reflections found in mirrors - the whole mirrorist element was just so good.Anyway as I said above, it's hard to describe this book in such a way that does it justice. I picked it up on a whim based on the interesting cover (i'm a sucker for warrior art) - but now having just finished it, offer it full praise and my sincere recommendation. Wishing success to Michael going forward, keen to pick up another tale in this fascinating, ripe for exploration, world.*edit - this was kindle, not paperback, not that it makes any difference.

Before the Civil War, a slavemaster named Jonah takes his family and five of what he believes are his most loyal and trustworthy slaves to a remote and beautiful island off the coast of Florida.

But as soon they arrive, one of the slaves named Shaka lures the other slaves into his Shamanic and animistic beliefs. When a pair of black, inverted wings appear on the island from nowhere, the slaves come into conflict with Jonah and soon revolt altogether.

As Jonah strives to repress the rebellion and his wife, Eloise, strives to reconvert the slaves back to Christianity, the slaves delve deeper into the Shamanic realms until Shaka reveals to them that they are preparing for an extraordinary exodus back to Africa.

While the island hovers on the verge of violence--and even madness--the whites and black are forced to confront the dark, secretive but sometimes loving relationships that exist between them through spending their lifetimes together on a raw and uncivilized plantation in the backwoods of Alabama.

As the day of liberation approaches, the story increasingly turns and twists in ways the reader cannot imagine, as the characters see their ideas about their lives shattered--and eventually reconstructed anew.

Written in seamless, well-paced and poetic prose, this novel synthesizes several genres into one story: while driven by adventure and suspense, it simultaneously delves into the ideas behind our American culture--and then even deeper into the most repressed reaches of our mind. In the end an allegory emerges from the pages, at once painful and unflinching but healing, about the history of America.

This ones a bit of a sleeper hit By Chris Dees Yoke of wind written by Luke Comer is a griping tale about love, religion, and the introspection of human morality and self-worth during times of slavery or great peril. I may be giving this book a little too much credit. The writing is excellent, but the dialog leaves something to be desired especially in the earlier parts. The speeches do not really feel authentic for the time period, but I’m not an historian. Personally I don’t like when authors give away a characters story or attitude from their name. I have to admit Luke does a fairly good job in the cases of Shaka and Jonah. Without giving too much away this book does a good job drawing you in before any action starts. I received this book for an honest review.

He was my favorite - strong and visionary By Kristie Alshaibi A nuanced exploration of the ways slavery affected the soul of America, as well as the motives and conflicts of conscience surrounding treating others as property. Gritty and, at times, perhaps offensive to a contemporary sensibility, but if you stick with it, it is nothing less than profoundly and nakedly human. Yoke of Wind is an emotionally charged read, rich with symbolism and lusciously vivid prose. At one point about 2/3 of the way through I had to set the book down for a few months, shaken raw with emotion for Shaka’s character. He was my favorite - strong and visionary, though at times fearful and unsure. He relies on a knowledge that he can’t always reason through, but trusts to be truthful. We glimpse the inner workings of a seer. The reader’s awareness of the rumblings of Jonah’s unconscious make him relatable, even when you just can’t tolerate his actions. He is a great personification of redemption, recklessly struggling to find his way throughout. Perhaps the simplest character is Eloise, Jonah’s wife, though she brings to the surface the differences between dogma and a deeper understanding of morality. The moments when we see through the lens of her worldview seem to have the least depth, though always colored with compassion. She seems to change the least of anyone, having come on the scene as a bit passively refined to begin with (which is a fault of her vulnerable and powerless position more than a personality flaw), and not having been embroiled in the dramas of the other characters’ earlier lives.Overall, this a sensual read - great at building a sense of place and mood through a complex interweaving of all seven senses (vestibular and proprioception are included as effectively as visuals, sounds, textures and smells). Flashbacks are skillfully woven in at the right moments to inform the narrative, and we get a multi-generational view of the story’s present, becoming more acutely aware of history’s impact on the now. Moving on micro and macro levels all at once.I received a copy of the book for an honest review.

By Amazon Customer Woven with such masterpiece of words painting a vivid reincarnation of a dark time in history that has rarely been examined from such unique and intimate perspective, Yoke of Wind is thought provoking and transformative, stirring a vast canvas of emotion and deep inner contemplation.Transported on the wings of potent allegory through the timeless depths of the human psyche, the reader comes breathtakingly close to the divine and brushes the edges of mystery and magic, then plummets once again back into the wrenching and at times beautiful reality and realness of our mortal spar with light and dark in realization that no one can save us except we ourselves. Contrasting the search for God and the understanding of self, and challenging the prejudices of birthright and destiny with the irrevocable value of every individual life and the right of each of us to be free and seek happiness, the story dances between love and brutality, bravery and fear, power and shame, the known and the unspoken, the anticipated and the surreal.Such opposing perspectives, and varying experiences, and yet we’ve all walked each of them in some way at some point along our journey to embrace our personal truths and answer our soul questions. Are we ever really as different as we think we are? What if, at our core, we hope for and strive for such a similar thing?By compelling us to face the graphic understory of our nation’s history, which to this day so many wish to forget, we come face to face with darkness and illusion we all must reconcile within as part of our own quest toward wholeness, purpose, and morality. We then know that we must find the courage to become greater than all of the yesterdays that have brought us to today, together and separately. This book is a powerful reminder of our choices and the choices of our families, and how these shape our lives. In the endless debate of nature over nurture, “Yoke of Wind” may have cast the mightiest of stones. It is our experiences that make us, and our experiences that break us. We shape our world, and we shape our children… for better, or worse, this is so. We are each born in innocence speaking and understanding a language of love that transcends all color, all religion, all differences, and genetics has not cast our fate but rather fallible humankind. The timeless question - who would you be, if you stopped being who you were told to be?And how would you see the world, if you ceased looking for god outside of yourself?

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Molto bello!

Locus Recommended ReadingWhen Taggert's adopted daughter goes missing he suspects the hand of an old enemy. He gathers friends, family, and even those who don't quite trust that he has left his violent past behind. But their search leads them to an unexpected place, the past, and the consequences of their journey have a price that is higher than they can afford.Praise for The Liminal People:"A great piece of genre fiction. But picking which genre to place it in isn't easy. The first in a planned series, it's got the twists and taut pacing of a thriller, the world-warping expansiveness of a fantasy yarn, and even the love-as-redemption arc of a romance. Oh yeah, a lot of the characters in it have superhuman powers, too."—The Rumpus"Ayize's imagination will mess with yours, and the world won't ever look quite the same again."—Nalo Hopkinson"An action-packed thriller and a careful look at the moral dilemmas of those whose powers transcend humanity."—Publishers WeeklyThe enigmatic quagmire that is Ayize Jama-Everett has been making his presence felt all across this world since 1974. In New York, California, Morocco, Ethiopia, and elsewhere, he has impressed, reviled, and astonished with his amazing feats of mental alacrity and mystical inebriation. Despite being degreed in both divinity and psychology, the forlorn artist stakes his reputation and honor on the calling of author. He is known to be cunning in the ways of the bottle, the pen, and the pistol.

The Liminal War: a novel, by Ayize Jama-Everett

Review Locus Recommended Reading List"The Liminal War bounces between scenes of high-octane, superpowered battles, and surprisingly low-key interludes. The entire middle of the novel follows Taggert, Tamara, and Mico, the high priest of the mannah, as they travel back in time to 1971 so that Mico can jam with a young Bob Marley. Music, in fact, has tremendous power in this story, and the final confrontation with Nardeen is powered by the music of Robert Johnson, whom the group meet in 1938 in the book's final third.... Books like The Liminal War and The Entropy of Bones won't make up for the fact that the dominant genre of our pop culture is so completely wedded to the past and the status quo, but they point the way to how that might—if we embrace change and creativity—someday change."— Strange Horizons"In Ayize Jama-Everett’s The Liminal War, the family one chooses is just as important as the one a person is born into. Taggert is a “Liminal,” a being who can manipulate human molecules and DNA, allowing him to both harm and heal. When his adopted daughter is kidnapped by his psychotic former mentor, Taggert will rent the fabric of time and space to make sure his daughter is found before his former master can twist her mind. While there are forces stronger than Liminals bent on stopping Taggert and his friends — a pot-smoking god and a musician who takes him back to 1970s London — they may be outmatched by Taggert’s biological daughter, Tamara, who will risk her own life to save her sister’s."— Nancy Hightower, Washington Post"Like Ursula K. Le Guin and Octavia Butler before him, Jama-Everett has a knack for braiding issues of spirituality and race throughout a compelling fantasy landscape."— Leilani Clark, KQED"It’s been a long wait since Jama-Everett’s 2009 debut, The Liminal People, but the same raw wattage that lit up healer/killer Taggert’s epic introduction to his daughter, Tamara, and his split with his sociopathic mentor, Nordeen, is at work in this rich, dense sequel. This episode opens with a characteristic blast of pure psychic chaos from Tamara, who’s discovered that Prentis, a child Taggert calls “mine by choice,” has disappeared from the sensory realm commanded by superpowered liminals like Taggert’s family. Taggert’s sure that Prentis isn’t dead, but beyond that he’s stumped. His lover, Samantha, guides him to the Rasta-tinged commune of London’s Eel Pie Island, where he encounters the avatar of a four-billion-year-old vegetable god who allies with him in the search. And that’s just the first 30 pages. Jama-Everett writes with such cyclonic energy and verbal legerdemain that occasionally the plot has to be taken on faith, but the noir-infused verve of the telling makes it all work."— Publishers Weekly"A scrappy group of people with superpowers who careen through a criminal underground, the space-time continuum, and frequently outrageous battles to rescue a young woman who's gone missing. Taggert, a former criminal, can "read bodies" and manipulate them on a molecular level. He's lying low in London, working a shadowy business of healing people with terminal diseases and keeping an eye on his teenage daughter, Tamara, and adopted daughter, Prentis. Both Tamara and Prentis are also "liminals"—people with supernatural abilities—and survivors of Taggert's criminal past. When Prentis vanishes from the planet, invisible even to Tamara's powerful telepathy, Taggert and Tamara set out to look for her. They find themselves thrown into alliances with legendary musicians and the worshipers of a strange god and pitted against viciously ruthless nonhuman entities called "alters." The plot moves swiftly, cramming incident after incident into a novel that seems surprisingly slim for this breed of action-adventure. . . . An engaging sequel that sets its likable cast of characters against a fast-paced sequence of dangers."— Kirkus Reviews "The Liminal War did something I thought was impossible. It was even better than its predecessor, which knocked my socks off when I read it last year. Science fiction and fantasy fans, run—don’t walk—to go read Ayize Jama-Everett’s Liminal series."— A Bookish Type"The Liminal War is thus rich in action and meaning that is impressive for its short length. . . . an effective and remarkable novel . . . I really look forward to the next entry in this series, the further growth of its characters and its textured layers of Black culture and history."— Skiffy and Fanty

Wonderful read - looking forward to the next book By Cheryl Montgomery-Nolan The Liminal War is a very fast-paced alternate reality tale based upon the universal balance of power. Forces against each other from the dawn of time wage war for supremacy. Allegiances are in flux as the psychically gifted combatants attempt to end the conflict. Following orders is difficult for those who see loss of humanity as the outcome. Family ties become pivotal in an increasingly improbable victory for mankind. Wonderful read - looking forward to the next book!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Fantastic Second Act By Amazon Customer On first read I definitely enjoyed this novel—which, like its predecessor The Liminal People reads like an action-filled afro sci-fi thriller. However a few weeks after finishing and moving on to the next books on my list I found myself in the midst of a very powerful psychedelic experience thinking a lot about this piece of literature. The obvious theme of a fungus-based omniscient deity who possesses its disciples when smoked certainly played a role, but even deeper were the connections to themes of the power of the Ancestors of those of us who have inherited the genetic trauma of those who made (or didn't complete) the journey across the Middle Passage, and the reality of their individual humanity (a point that echoes some central themes in Ta-Nehisi Coates' recent work of art Between The World And Me), as well as the cosmic oneness that can be experienced through truly sublime musical works. Where the first Liminal novel focuses on setting the foundational rules and physics/biology of the Liminal world in order to drive the action of the plot, The Liminal War smashes those expectations by expanding out into the realms of the spiritual and the cosmic. With a cliffhanger that is sure to drive all fans of Jama-Everett's series insane with anticipation, The Liminal War is a fantastic second act to this engaging, thought-provoking series.

Jama-Everett puts you into his world immediately from the first page. Like his first book the characters, their abilities, and the world they inhabit are really authentic.A relatively short read, the pace stays high the whole time. Gorgeous Wool Appliqué: A Visual Guide to Adding Dimension & Unique Embroidery, by Deborah Gale Tirico

Review Stitching with felted wool is most commonly associated with penny rugs, an American folk craft used to make use of worn-out clothing and military uniforms. But there's more to felted wool appliqué than folk art, as needle artist Tirico demonstrates in this collection of colorful projects. The introduction provides a concise overview of the basics, along with a brief exploration of the difference between appliqué with felted wool and appliqué with quilting cotton. The nature of felted wool makes it ideal for dimensional work―as the wool is layered, stitched, and embellished, its thickness gives it depth. Felted wool is also a forgiving fabric for appliqué, and beginners may find it slightly less fussy than working with quilting cotton. Standout projects include a Jacobean-style pillow cover featuring traditional motifs of the era, a nutcracker penny rug ideal for the Christmas table, and a small set of sewing accessories featuring a pincushion, metal box (cleverly constructed from a mint tin), and a scissor sheath and fob. VERDICT Tirico's colorful projects will appeal to stitchers with an interest in exploring traditional appliqué motifs and techniques in felted wool. (Library Journal, October 1st, 2015)Dimensional applique with embroidery. This book has eight projects. Make pillows, (cushions), scissors case, pincushion, a tin top box and table rugs. Learn the basics, then start the projects. The instructions are step by step and very clear with excellent photos and illustrations. There are templates for the designs too. This book is delightful and full of wonderful projects. I love the Jacobean design on the front cover. Inside you will find more flowers – very realistic heartsease pansies, buttercups and a fabulous pumpkin table rug. If you want something seasonal the Nutcracker should fit the bill. At the back of the book, you'll find out how to do the embroidery stitches. There are also actual-size pattern sheets. This book has great appeal. You can start with the small projects and work up to larger ones if you are new to this craft. Recommended. (yarnsandfabrics.co.uk, 11/26/2015)

Gorgeous Appliqued Wool Embellished with Embroidery By Elle As a huge fan of applique, embroidery, and working with wool, this book is a huge hit with me. I love it. The projects are gorgeous and beautifully detailed. Of the ten projects included in this book, I especially love both the Harvest and the Heartsease penny rugs. I will definitely be making both of those first. I also love the pillows and the tin top box, which transforms an empty Altoid tin into a thing of beauty to stash needles, pins, or whatever our heart desires. If I had a complaint it would be that I wished there were more than ten projects. Other than that this is a great wool applique book.If you’ve never worked with felted wool before you are in for a treat and using this book will get you off on the right foot. I love appliqueing with wool because it doesn’t fray, is easy to stitch through, and it adds a beautiful three-dimensional look wherever it’s added in a project. To me, embroidery is like the icing on a cake, or jewelry, it dresses up and enhances. The book begins with eleven illustrated pages of general instructions to enable us in achieving a lovely end result. I really appreciated the information about the differences between felted wool, wool felt, craft felt, and gabardine, which of these to use, which to avoid, and why. Other topics covered under the “Basics” are: Felting wool, Threads (wool thread, cotton floss, perle cotton), and Tools & Supplies (needles, tweezers, acetate [for making guides], tissue paper, scissors, and glue [the author recommends Roxanne's Glue Baste It]).Under the section titled “Prework” illustrated instruction is given for Marking the Base Shape, Creating a Placement Guide, Creating Embroidery Guides, Tips for Stitching through Tissue Paper, Embroidery Over Running Stitch Guidelines, and Making Freezer-Paper Patterns. The section, “Appliqueing with Felted Wool” teaches the Tack Stitch, and for adding dimension to the projects there is, Stuffing, Trapunto, Layering, and Needle Slanting all of which are clearly explained. In the back of the book is the Glossary of Stitches, which covers the: basting stitch, blanket stitch, bullion stitch, chain stitch, chain stitch with needle weaving, colonial knot, couching stitch, fly stitch, herringbone stitch, ladder stitch, lazy daisy stitch, running stitch, satin stitch, seed stitch, stem stitch, and whipstitch. There are full-size template patterns throughout the book for the smaller projects as well as pull-out sheets with full-size templates for the larger penny rug projects.Happy Stitching!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great Designs By Kirsten M. Fantastic book. Very nice photos, very detailed so you can see the stitches that were done. The patterns are exquisit, the colors used have depth and there is movement in the design, it is not static, two dimensional. But be aware if you want to start this hobby - the supplies are very expensive, from $8 for a small square to $24 for half a yard.

About the Author Jonathan J. Cianfaglione spent much of his life around dogs. It wasn't until his time after the Marine Corps that he became more involved in the world of dogs. With influence coming from friends and his wife, who is a firm animal activist, Jonathan J. Cianfaglione became intrigued with societal misconceptions regarding Pit Bulls. Quickly, Jonathan J. Cianfaglione recognized that a handful of misconceptions pertaining to Pit Bulls plagued public policy, and court rulings. Determined to change the course of wrongly conceived statutes, Jonathan J. Cianfaglione focuses on policy pertaining to Military Working Dogs through Unified Front. There, Jonathan J. Cianfaglione is committed to end the euthanization of Military Working Dogs after their service, and, instead, work toward the adoptable route for these dogs.

Buck John Gould was a columnist for the Christian Science Monitor for about the last 61 years of his life, which overlapped that of his Grandfather Tom Gould, the son of the Maine poineer who first settled the farm on which both Tom and John lived out their days. This book is a compilation of columns written in the 1930's and 1940's about the farm, which John acquired after his grandfather died in 1929, and the rural Maine life of which it had long been a part.Fans of Ralph Moody, John's cousin, will recognize characters from his book The Fields of Home. John himself is mentioned in Mary Emma & Company.

Classic dry, tongue-in-cheek humor By centsworth Where has great American humor gone?Well, I don't know, but you can find some of it in this great book.Maybe I like it so much b/c I grew up on a farm.Maybe I just long for a way of life and a picture of America that seem to have disappeared with the past.Could be both.In any case, this book offers a chance to ponder the America that was and laugh while doing it.If I had one criticism, it's that the chapters are not titled and Gould doesn't give much effort to clarifying his chronology. So it's hard to tell when everything really happened. Also, this book is really about Thomas Gould, son of Jacob, and grandfather of John (the author). Not a problem, just a note.If you enjoy this book, check out the writings of Ralph Moody, John Gould's cousin.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A novel about conspiracies with in conspiracies! By Christine Richardson Please be careful and don't read too much about this book and spoil the ending, as this ending is much too powerful and thought provoking to miss reading for yourself. In my opinion, its a book and story much more suited to today then when it was written, but than again Chesterton knew more of governments and secrete societies and who was really behind them (its not what you think - read the book and don't even try and guess), then I do. He was somewhat connected without being part of the establishment, often on the outs with it.So this book, about a plan to bring down governments, but focused on England, is about the government infiltration of a group of anarchists - but you could see it as international terrorists - its all the same. The point of the novel is who is behind such groups, who supports them, funds them and who are the people who make up the leadership and cadre...Fascinating! Really, really enjoyed it, brilliant!

By Felicity Barrington Like Kafka, and TV's The Prisoner (1960's), The Many Who was Thursday is a terrific read. Below this review is a spoiler, so don't read anything past this paragraph - I can tell you if you are wondering sometimes at what or who is behind the headlines - one can suspect that Chesterton had some interesting ideas about 'world wide conspiracy' and what or how was behind them. I feel lucky to have found this book, it was an unexpected joy, and will be read again.Warning: Spoiler Alert!!!In a surreal turn-of-the-century London, Gabriel Syme, a poet, is recruited to a secret anti-anarchist task-force at Scotland Yard. Lucian Gregory, an anarchist poet, is the only poet in Saffron Park, until he loses his temper in an argument over the purpose of poetry with Gabriel Syme, who takes the opposite view. After some time, the frustrated Gregory finds Syme and leads him to a local anarchist meeting-place to prove that he is a true anarchist. Instead of the anarchist Gregory getting elected, the officer Syme uses his wits and is elected as the local representative to the worldwide Central Council of Anarchists. The Council consists of seven men, each using the name of a day of the week as a code name; Syme is given the name of Thursday. In his efforts to thwart the council's intentions, however, he discovers that five of the other six members are also undercover detectives; each was just as mysteriously employed and assigned to defeat the Council of Days. They all soon find out that they are fighting each other and not real anarchists; such was the mastermind plan of the genius Sunday. In a dizzying and surreal conclusion, the six champions of order and former anarchist ring-leaders chase down the disturbing and whimsical Sunday, the man who calls himself "The Peace of God".

An Allegorical Nightmare By A Certain Bibliophile This review contains spoilers. This was originally published in 1908 when Chesterton, one of the greatest Christian apologists of the first third of the twentieth century, was still a Protestant. He wouldn't convert to Catholicism until the 1920s. Yet even as a Protestant, he had managed to do some wonderful writing, including "Orthodoxy," his classic defense of the inner workings of Christian faith. However, I found this book to be less successful. The characters were so obviously meant to be symbols of something above and beyond themselves that it comes across more as a fable (or, as the subtitle has it, a "nightmare") than a realist novel. The main struggle Chesterton presents - relentlessly forced down your throat until you almost can't bear it anymore - is that of anarchy versus order. Gabriel Syme (paladin of law and order) is a member of the Scotland Yard division that keeps an eye on political anarchists. He meets Gregory, an anarchist, at a party where they discuss what makes poetry poetic. Is it law, rationality, and reason - or disorder and anarchy? Syme suggests that Gregory is only a tongue-in-cheek anarchist, since he rightfully claims that total anarchy would never be able to accomplish its political goals. Gregory counters by offering to take Syme to an underground anarchist meeting to show him that they really do exist. The rest proceeds almost predictably: we find that one member after another of the anarchist council is also working undercover as a member for the Scotland Yard. In fact, of the seven members (each named after a day of the week), five of them are discovered to be police officers. The first time or two this is surprising; by the fifth time, I was almost rolling my eyes. By the end, we find out that not even the leader of the group, Sunday, is an anarchist. Instead, he too has been a force for good.In the end, everything comes off sounding like a paean to reason and rationality, but the message comes off as both heavy-handed and confused, as difficult as that is to imagine. Maybe it was the overt force of the message mixed with the phantasmagoric style on top of the need for Chesterton to turn absolutely into a symbol with some latent meaning. There were just too many things he was trying to do here, and none of them come off with any virtuosity.
