1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I really love the pictures By Melissa Pereira I received this coloring book from Dwyanna when I won a coloring contest. I really love the pictures, my favorite are the kittens and the teddy bear as I love to color those kinds of images. I really like how at the beginning of the book she wrote a description and an acknowledgement page. I do have a few concerns, but nothing major. My first concern is the entire page of most of the pictures are filled with a drawing therefore it is going to be very hard to coloring the entire picture because its leading all the way up to the binding so I would recommend leaving a little space at the top where it meets the binding to make it easier for colorers. My other concern is the art is very well drawn and it's all very beautiful because I have seen many of these images on your facebook page before and I know that your art is perfect. When it was transferred into the book it seems to have printed blurry. Some of the artworks lined are not as defined as I know they originally were. Thank you so much for the prize :)

Both simple to more intricate pictures; a little bit of everything to satisfy all levels of colorists. I also really appreciate the appearance of the actual doodles being printed into the book versus any obvious adjusting from a computer program. So many great places to start my only challenge is picking one.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. There is power in Knowledge. By Teri Caiazzo Though this book can be read in a half hour I would suggest that you read it at least twice, it is deeper than it at first appears to be, and also for a couple of other reasons. First of all, this book is based on Ms.James experience with her autistic daughter. Due to the fact that I have worked with autistic children, I understand the struggles they are face each day. In my personal experience with teachers that are supposedly trained in "Special Needs," I found some loose their patience too quickly. When you have the distinct honor and yes it is an honor to help achieve their goals, patience is a virtue. You must see beyond the "meltdowns," and you cannot use your physical strength, instead you must use your power of words. There are varying degrees in autism, and of course no one wants to see a child hurt themselves, but as is represented in this book, it seems one teacher forced the hand of a parent to go for home schooling, just because this teacher used force, instead of words, belittled a child in front of the class so badly, that this young, beautiful child should be reduced to tears, made me cry as well. If we don't want children to bully other children we as adults need to lead by example. For parents that have an autistic child, take the time to buy this book. but hang on to one word always, "Hope." You'll find days where you get frustrated, but isn't that normal for all parents, of children with, or without learning disabilities? For family members, who may have a sibling, with autism, grandparents, aunts, uncles cousins, friends, and yes even teachers, buy the book, it could make a world of difference in understanding this disability, in turn with help you to make a difference. Even if you are friend or close neighbor to a parents that have an autistic child, buy the book, to help you to help the parents. Grant them the comfort in knowing they have you to turn to if they need to talk, or even if they need to get a couple of hours. The better you are knowledgeable about this disability, the better you are able to make difference. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I do, it's very helpful. Happy reading!

I understand and empathize with the constant struggle (personally, I think ya'll are superheroes and any child would be blessed to have you as their parents!) surrounding autistic children and how the world tends to view them and those who care for them. With heartbreaking honesty, raw emotion and genuine heart, Ms. James takes on the Herculean task of inviting the reader to step into the minds and shoes of one girl and her journey to finding a way to make the world hear her and understand her. There were moments of sheer pride and aching pain for me when reading it. The shattering sincerity is what sets it apart. No sugarcoating….all truth. Not all warriors look like warriors. Sometimes we find them in the guise of little girls and boys who hold worlds of mystery deep in their minds and souls, waiting for one person, just one person, to help them understand …and who accept them.Just as they are.I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a heart. Great job, Ms. James. Bravo!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Like no other I have read.... By Kreid09 Amazing story of one girls journey to understand and over come her struggle with communication. Forced to write in a journal every day and learn to express her feelings she at first thinks it is pointless, what could she possibly get out of writing in a journal when not being able to verbalize her feelings is her real problem? Finally coming to the realization that the journal was really just what she needed to come to terms with her life past, present, and future.Even though this book is a short story it really packs a punch. The reader is given just a glimpse of the struggles of an autisic girl, her fears, her frustrations, her anger and her rebellion. This story is like no other I have read it is well wrritten, thought provoking, and I highly recomend that it be read at least once if not more...

I was given this book for my honest review. This book will get you started crocheting on the very basics which is what the author intended. I do think that the author should have kept in mind that not everyone is right handed and at least told the reader hold the crochet hook in the left hand and wrap the yarn in the right hand for a left handed person other than that I thought is was a good starter book for learning to crochet.

A Twisted Tale Spawned by a Real Life Tornado By Rocky Macy "You’re Invited!" tells the fictional story of Barry Mayhew, a former member of the Neosho (Missouri) City Council who is about to begin serving a prison term for stealing money from a fund that has been set up to benefit victims of the massive Joplin tornado on 2011. As Barry tries to come to terms with his rapidly approaching incarceration and the impending long-term separation from his young son, an event from his past suddenly re-emerges and begins to play even more havoc with his life. This book will stir memories for anyone who has lived in or around Neosho. The author has captured the town’s authenticity replete with the hard edges and sharp corners of life in a small community, yet as with all things based in memory, it has been air-brushed with just a hint of nostalgia. All in all, the book presents a startlingly good composite of the town Tim knew as a boy.But it is psychological distress of Barry Mayhew that is the true and necessary focus of this book. The plot is highly original, exerting a force that destabilizes that main character’s once successful life and sets it spinning out onto the darkening horizon, much like the murderous twister that spawned the tale.Okay, I'm related to the author, but I liked this book - I liked it a whole bunch!

Romola, by George Eliot

Review “George Eliot’s humanity colors all her other gifts—her humor, her morality, and her exquisite rhetoric.” —Henry James

From the Inside Flap George Eliot's Romola, writes Robert Kiely in his Introduction, embodies the author's "wrestling with her own best theories of history and human nature as a creative experiment of the highest order." Set in Florence in 1492, a time of great political and religious turmoil, Eliot's novel blends vivid fictional characters with historical figures such as Savonarola, Machiavelli, and the Medicis. When Romola, the virtuous daughter of a blind scholar, marries Tito Melema, a charismatic young Greek, she is bound to a man whose escalating betrayals threaten to destroy all that she holds dear. Profoundly inspired by Savonarola's teachings, then crushed by the religious leader's ultimate failure, Romola finds her salvation in noble self-sacrifice. This Modern Library Paperback Classic is set from the 1878 Cabinet Edition.

From the Back Cover

The most exotic of George Eliot’s works, Romola recounts the story of the famous religious leader Savonarola in Florence at the time of Machiavelli and the Medicis. Of all her novels, this was the author’s favourite.

No other Eliot novel was illustrated in its first edition. Romola, however, was sought by George Smith for serialization in the prestigious illustrated Cornhill Magazine. Smith commissioned illustrations for the novel from the rising young artist Frederick Leighton, who had studied in Florence in the 1840s and had frequently painted Florentine Renaissance subjects. Romola was serialised with the Leighton illustrations in the magazine from July 1862 to August 1863. It was first published in book form in 1863; the first edition was published by Smith, Elder in three volumes, and a one-volume edition in two-column format with all but one of the Leighton illustrations was published later that year by Harper & Brothers in the United States. This facsimile reprint is of the one-volume 1863 Harper & Brothers edition, and includes 8 pages of original advertisements from the back of the book.

This is one of a series from Broadview Press of facsimile reprint editions―editions that provide readers with a direct sense of these works as the Victorians themselves experienced them.

63 of 63 people found the following review helpful. Gorgeous and underrated By nick turner Romola is constantly called Eliot's weakest novel, with even serious critics reluctant to praise it. However, it was seen in the 19th century as Eliot's masterpiece. Some of the blame for the novel going out of fashion must rest with F.R. Leavis who said that "few will want to read Romola a second time, and few can ever have got through it once without some groans." If Leavis, viewed as one of the great literary minds, thinks this, then more average readers like us are bound to be put off.True, the start of Romola is bogged down in detail, but it is introduced by a wonderful, stirring and majestic 'Proem' which sees the Angel of the Dawn sweeping across the Earth and loftily states how humanity is the same now as it was when Romola is set. After this, the notes are best ignored - consult them separately, and concentrate on getting into the book. It is a stirring and sometimes hard read, and moves one with awe at what Eliot has created - you really feel you are experiencing Florence in the 15th century. There is one scene that stands out for me - the haunting and almost surreal episode where Romola drifts by boat to an apparent coastal haven. Images of peace and life are reversed disturbingly. So ignore Leavis and the dissenters. If you've read another Eliot, you'll like it. If you haven't, maybe start with something else, but come back, for it's a rewarding read

41 of 41 people found the following review helpful. Great Historical Fiction By Edward George Eliot spent two years preparing "Romola", and the result is a rich, densely detailed "Tale of the Renaissance". Never a facile writer, here she is concerned with one of the most intellectually challenging (not to mention politically complicated) periods in history; and she paints the panoply and power struggles as a background for the personal tragedy which is the novel's crux. While not an "easy read" in the Sir Walter Scott sense, "Romola" presents in sumptous detail the banquets, the festivities, and the famous bonfire of vanities that one associates with late 15th Century Florence. But from a purely literary viewpoint, the most important thing about the book is its delineation of Tito Melema, the young man who in the opening chapters is the story's hero, but slowly, irrevocably becomes its villain. Neither Sir Walter nor Charles Dickens has psychological insight (in the modern sense) as sharp as George Eliot's, and this study of a fictional character's downfall is one of the most stunning depictions of corruption in English literature. That he is the husband of the heroine, a sensitive, finely sensual woman, makes the tragedy all the more poignant. Scenes involving historical characters (including Savonarola and Machiavelli) tend to be a little stiff in costume movie style. Oh, and because the story takes place in the 1490's, one must imagine the Piazza della Signoria without Michelangelo and Cellini. This must really have frustrated a connoisseur like George Eliot.

(And if you actually read the Penguin editor's introduction, it's a sure thing you'll never read the novel: she makes it sound like about as much fun as chewing rocks.) But don't let all that deter you. You may have some rough going at the beginning, mostly because Latin and Greek scholarship is so important to the plot. Use the notes and they'll enhance your enjoyment of the story, but ignore them and you're still in for a thrilling tale gorgeously told. Tito Melema is one of the great characters in fiction, and he's someone we all know: a thoroughly despicable human being who has no idea he's anything but a nice guy. Eliot has wrought a dreamy and hair-raising hybrid of fiction and history, infused with her own astonishing insight and complicated sympathy and delivered in her matchless prose. I loved this book.

“I don’t know what to do with him. I never saw such a boy—a miserable little coward, always in mischief and doing things he ought not to do, and running about the place with his whims and fads. I wish you’d send him right away, I do.” My aunt went out of the room, and I can’t say she banged the door, but she shut it very hard, leaving me and my uncle face to face staring one at the other.

By Chew Lee Li A good read for those keen on finding out what life was like for the species hunters of the 19th Century. However, do side-step over the colonial ideas of race and gender. The blatant destruction of animal life may also give offense.

Free PDF Ebook Tell about Night Flowers: Eudora Welty's Gardening Letters, 1940-1949From University Press of Mississippi

Tell about Night Flowers presents previously unpublished letters by Eudora Welty, selected and annotated by scholar Julia Eichelberger. Welty published many of her best-known works in the 1940s: A Curtain of Green, The Wide Net, The Robber Bridegroom, Delta Wedding, and The Golden Apples. During this period, she also wrote hundreds of letters to two friends who shared her love of gardening. One friend, Diarmuid Russell, was her literary agent in New York; the other, John Robinson, was a high school classmate and an aspiring writer who served in the Army in WWII, and he was long the focus of Welty’s affection.

Welty’s lyrical, witty, and poignant discussions of gardening and nature are delightful in themselves; they are also figurative expressions of Welty’s views of her writing and her friendships. Taken together with thirty-five illustrations, they form a poetic narrative of their own, chronicling artistic and psychic developments that were underway before Welty was fully conscious of them. By 1949 her art, like her friendships, had evolved in ways that she would never have predicted in 1940. Tell about Night Flowers not only lets readers glimpse Welty in her garden; it also reveals a brilliant and generous mind responding to the public events, people, art, and natural landscapes Welty encountered at home and on her travels during the 1940s. This book enhances our understanding of the life, landscape, and art of a major American writer.

Tell about Night Flowers: Eudora Welty's Gardening Letters, 1940-1949From University Press of Mississippi

Review

“This is a beautiful book, a compelling and lovingly rendered gathering of letters that allows a peek inside the twin gardens Ms. Welty tended with such love and care: that of her home there in Jackson, and that of her art. I have never read a book like this―part life of the mind and life of the gardener, intimate and meaningful and startlingly inspired.”

―Bret Lott, author of Jewel and Ancient Highway

“Tell about Night Flowers is a joy to read. The gardening letters Eudora Welty exchanged with Diarmuid Russell and John Robinson are by turns witty, pensive, wry, mystical, metaphorical, and practical. Julia Eichelberger introduces and annotates these letters with grace and with keen insight into the profound connection that gardening and creativity had for Welty.”

―Suzanne Marrs, editor of What There Is to Say We Have Said: The Correspondence of Eudora Welty and William Maxwell and author of Eudora Welty: A Biography

“This delightful collection of Welty letters displays not only a generous wit and capacity for friendship but the writer’s responsive connection to the material world. We see how easily she appropriates the language of the garden for rich scenic detail in her writing―and then often transforms that detail, as she does in her fiction, into striking, memorable metaphor. Eichelberger deepens our knowledge of Welty in a book that is a great pleasure to read!”

―Peggy Whitman Prenshaw, Millsaps College Humanities Scholar in Residence and author of Composing Selves: Southern Women and Autobiography

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Book For Non-Gardeners By leroy hutchinson Unlike many collections of letters, this collection offers an engaging narrative. In 1940 Ms. Welty is beginning to find her voice as a writer, a process that can be tracked through her correspondence throughout the decade with her agent Diarmuid Russell and her close friend John Robinson, both of whom were enthusiastic and knowledgeable gardeners. When Mr. Robinson joins the U.S. Army and is sent to Italy during World War II, his correspondence with Ms. Welty takes on another dimension. So much of Ms. Welty's personality is reflected in these letters--her abiding concern for Mr. Robinson's safety, her "favorite aunt" status with the Russell family, impressions of war-related deprivations endured on the home front, and throughout all, her keen insights into human nature and her humor. I'm not a gardener, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as did the New York Times Book Review in its selections for summer reading.

From the first paragraph The FlipSide grips, that's when the story's heroine loses one secret that allowed her to live with a mediocre life. She's left with a more terrible secret that makes further compromise unbearable. Ordinarily this isn't the kind of book I read but Kimbeth Wehrli Judge has changed my mind! She's a terrific writer with a keen sense of where the story needs to go next. I'm looking forward to her next book.

It is a slice of Chicago life about educated upper class people living in a luxury high rise overlooking Millennium Park. They are confronted with the death of a neighbor whose body crashes into the ground as they exit their building. As the story builds, the relationship between the dead neighbor and Helen is revealed in all of its rich and ironic ways with twists that keep you intrigued. It is a fun read that I happily passed on to others. Tom Burke

The stunning mystery from “the perfect author to read late into the night” (Clive Cussler)

Annie O'Neill has it all: a cozy Manhattan apartment, a beautiful bookshop and a network of supportive friends. But at the heart of her life is a hole―a place vacated by her father when he died in her childhood. So when a mysterious man named Forrester enters the shop and claims to be her father's oldest friend she jumps at the chance to find out more of her own past. But Forrester's not being free with the answers she needs. He's much more interested in telling her a story about a ruthless ganglord and a fifty-year-old betrayal. A betrayal that she will realize far too slowly, has something very much to do with her. Praised by Alan Furst as "a uniquely gifted, passionate, and powerful writer, R. J. Ellory returns with another expertly crafted thriller.

When you read the synopsis of the story contained within the outer sleeve, it'll sound interesting and worth a read. In a lot of cases, the resultant purchase of the book turns out to be a disappointment and you feel you've wasted both money and time on that book. Not so in the case of Ghostheart. The accolades and synopsis are well desverved and accurate. This is a really great storyline which has a few catch-you-out moments just to keep you guessing who is really who that little bit longer. As with other Ellory books that I've read, the fleshed out characters become so real that you get involved in their "lives" and just want to keep reading their story till you've got right to the last page. This is my third RJ Ellory novel and I am left wanting to read the remaining books in his catalogue. His stories are just so interesting, well paced and filled with such believable characters that you can become lost in the fantasy american lives he's describing.A great story and a damn good read.

This is the first book I read by this author and from start to finish I was enthralled.Annie O'Neill is a single person who owns a used bookstore in New York City. Her father died when she was young and her mother when she was 17. Her life is pretty uneventful until an elderly man, Robert Franklin Forrester, appears at the store with a chapter from a manuscript for her along with letters from her father to her mother that her mother had never received. The main book is set in the present with another storyline running alongside spanning the years from Auschwitz to America in the sixties. The past and the present are both equally gripping.A book full of vengence and betrayal - if you haven't read it yet, believe me it's worth reading!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. R.J. Ellory sets off a chain reaction at the end of the book that is still merrily exploding as the reader reaches the last page By Bookreporter Two things immediately become obvious after reading the first few pages of GHOSTHEART. The first is that it is beautifully, even exquisitely, written. Those who have experienced the depth of the quality of R.J. Ellory’s literary work will not find this surprising. The second is that Ellory proceeds at his own pace when he proceeds at all.GHOSTHEART was initially published in 2004 and is being released in hardcover in the United States for the first time. I would guess that it was written a good three or four years before that, given that the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers is not even afforded a mention during the narrative. eBooks are also the stuff of science fiction, more or less. As a result, the story seems older than it really is, which, in the instant case, is a good thing. The opening passages introduce an attractive and literate but lonely 30-year-old woman named Annie O’Neill, who lives in New York and owns a bookstore called The Reader’s Rest on the Upper West Side. Originally owned by Annie’s long-absent father, The Reader’s Rest is the type of bookstore that anyone who enjoys reading would love to have around the corner from them, a jumble of unorganized used hardcovers and paperbacks that demand browsing and an open-mindedness that eschews genre-shopping. Annie has a couple of older male friends who are a bit odd but loyal and harmless.Lest one thinks that they have stumbled into Howards End, things pick up when an elderly, enigmatic gentleman named Robert Franklin Forrester enters the store and introduces himself as a friend of Annie’s father. He offers Annie pieces of her past, doled out weekly in the form of letters from her father to her more recently deceased mother, as well as a manuscript. The latter, chapter by chapter, is an account of a man who took three different names over the course of his lifetime and went from a concentration camp survivor during World War II to a New York crime lord in the 1950s and ’60s. This book within a book is not for the faint-hearted, especially in its opening chapter, which is unrelentingly cringe-inducing in its descriptions of inhumanity. Still, it provides a counterpoint to the steady, monotonous hum of Annie’s existence, which threatens to quietly drown her in its own ennui. However, that frozen lake is broken with the appearance of another customer, a man named David Quinn, who upends Annie’s passive social life and shows her things she has never seen before. Forrester, meanwhile, makes his weekly appearances, with more chapters of the manuscript and occasional letters, all the while seemingly putting Annie off when she raises the subject of her father. There is much to be revealed, and, as Annie soon learns, there are some things better left unlearned. Or is there such a thing? The book, in its way, provides the answer.GHOSTHEART is definitely climax-driven. Ellory sets off a chain reaction at the end of the book that is still merrily exploding as the reader reaches the last page. While not representative of Ellory’s other work, it is beautifully written. I’m not entirely in agreement with its classification as a thriller --- certainly it is a domestic drama, with a twist or five --- but, like The Reader’s Rest, it is probably best not to quibble over genres. This is not a book I would reflexively give to someone as an introduction to Ellory, but those, like myself, who insist on reading everything he writes ultimately will not be disappointed.Reviewed by Joe Hartlaub

The clear, open hearted style, makes the novel alive. You want to know more and more when suddenly your are dropped into your own stuff, desires, worries, dreams, life. This book is destined to win awards because Freedman is gifted. This book dances, plays, and enjoys everything human. Isn't this what a good novel should do? Lets hope there are many more to come!

Koppel The novel is engaging and Benjamin East is unforgettable: a complicated, and sympathetic character who captured and kept my interest. The prose is clear, smart, funny, and knowing. The insistent search for meaning shines through.

I loved it from the first page on. The characters are so well described that I literally could picture and sympathize with all of them. I read this book while cruising the waters of Alaska and when I read the parts that play in the Amazon, I forgot about the cold waters and glaciers around me as it felt like cruising through the jungle of the Amazon. The story is great, complex but easy to follow. The ups and downs of hope and disappointment are nicely brightend up with a good sense of humor (I loved the bird stories). I always wanted to know where the expression Big Apple came from, what a nice answer Jonathan provided in this book ;-). I highly recommend this book as it is wonderful to read.
