After losing her job as a TV psychic, Lee Barrett has decided to volunteer her talents as an instructor at the Tabitha Trumbull Academy of the Arts-known as "The Tabby"-in her hometown of Salem, Massachusetts. But when the school's handyman turns up dead under seemingly inexplicable circumstances on Christmas night, Lee's clairvoyant capabilities begin bubbling to the surface once again. The Tabby is housed in the long-vacant Trumbull's Department Store. As Lee and her intrepid students begin work on a documentary charting the store's history, they unravel a century of family secrets, deathbed whispers-and a mysterious labyrinth of tunnels hidden right below the streets of Salem. Even the witches in town are spooked, and when Lee begins seeing visions in the large black patent leather pump in her classroom, she's certain that something evil is afoot. But ghosts in the store's attic are the least of her worries with a killer on the loose . . .

The cover image for this well written and complex cozy mystery really sets the pace... isn't it inviting? There are several sub plots which make this story line interesting. The story delves into the history of one of Salem's premiere families and touches on the history of the tunnels under Salem. This is written in the first person which always draws me into the story. After being fired from her job as a TV psychic, Lee Barrett finds herself taking a job as an instructor at the Tabitha Trumbull Academy of Arts -- known as "The Tabby".The setting for this book is interesting, unique and a little bit spooky. The school is located in an abandoned department store and features tunnels and a spooky residence in the attic. I felt as if I were walking through the department store and into the tunnels and back in time-- the descriptions were vivid and offered just enough detail. I was scared a few times when Lee explored the residence in the attic!I loved the paranormal aspect of the book. Lee continues to explore her psychic skills. She uses them sparingly which makes them seem more realistic. I wish there was a bit more of Lee's abilities written into the story. The author did a good job of keeping me in suspense with plot twists throughout this engaging mystery. Ghosts and visions from the past gave me several spooky moments. The story offers plenty of red herrings and a rich pool of characters/suspects. Lee and Detective Pete Mondello continue their budding relationship. Lee is now taking a criminology course and often references Nancy Drew. Lee also continues her friendship with witch River North. Lee's cat O'Ryan, (some people think it's her familiar) is a great addition to this series and adds to the paranormal aspect. We also get to know a little bit more about Aunt Ibby. She not only helps with the investigation but she proves that you don't have to be young to effectively use the Internet. You will get to know Lee's students: Kelly, Therese, Primrose, Thom, Sammy and Duke. Their personalities and their backgrounds keep you guessing whodunit. You'll meet the city counselor Mr. Wilson and academy director Rupert Pennington. The setting, the storyline and the rich cast of suspects make this a 'must read' cozy mystery. You don't have to read the first book in this series to enjoy this one... but you just might do yourself a favor and grab a copy! I can't wait for the next book in this series, Look Both Ways, to be released in late October 2015!

This paranormal cozy is sure to impress fans and new readers alike with its blend of magic, humor and suspense.Christmas is a time of new beginnings for Lee Barrett. The renovations on her home are going well and her relationship with Pete is progressing. A new job is on the horizon. The former Trumbull department store has been turned into the Tabitha Trumbull Academy of the Arts – better known as “The Tabby”. When it opens, Lee is slated to teach television production.Unfortunately for the Tabby, the school's handyman turns up dead, and the investigation into his death turns up old secrets linked to the Trumbull family. Once again, Lee has to rely on her friends, O'Ryan, and her clairvoyant talents to uncover the identity of a very modern murderer. This wonderful mystery has a little bit of everything – murder, a wandering ghost, a family with a history of smuggling and a possible buried treasure, an underground labyrinth, witches and of course O'Ryan with his feline talents. There is even romance, as Lee and Pete continue their relationship, and Aunt Ibby finds a new beau in Mr Pennington, the theatrical head of the “Tabby”.As Lee's class is making a documentary about the history of the Trumbull family and the department store, she has plenty of opportunities to investigate.Unlike the police characters in many cozy mysteries, Pete listens to Lee's opinions and insights. While he doesn't tell her everything, Pete takes Lee seriously – occasionally telling her that she would make a great detective and encouraging her to take criminology classes. This is a pleasant change from the typical cozy setup. In Tails You Lose, Lee also comes to terms with her clairvoyant ability and begins to use it purposefully, seeing it as a valuable tool. O'Ryan, as always, plays a vital role in helping Lee uncover the murderer and escape from danger. If you like well-written cozy mysteries with paranormal elements and cats, Tails You Lose is right up your alley. Although it can be read as a stand-alone, it is best to read Caught Dead Handed first.--Crittermom (Muttcafe.com blog)

Another fun edition in the Witch Mystery Series By Melissa's Eclectic Bookshelf Another fun edition in the Witch Mystery Series, Tails, You Lose may actually be even better that Caught Dead Handed. I love first books in series…that whole getting to know you honeymoon period with new characters and places. Tails, You Lose did a great job of building on the first in the series.Lee grows as a character.I love how much more we get to know her and her personality. We know her back story and her insecurities and can really feel her personal struggle with acknowledging and accepting and even using her special talents. The budding relationship with Pete, the police detective and her struggles to keep her abilities a secret add extra dimension to the story. The relationship moves nice and slowly and it feels very grownup and real.Cats make everything better!O’Ryan lends his help as usual (with an assist from all the neighborhood cats) and makes me wonder why every book doesn’t have cats!We also get to know Lee’s Aunt Ibby even better…and who wouldn’t love a partially retired reference librarian who organizes her home library by Dewey decimal system.

MIND PICTURES ("SPEILBIDER") is a novel set in Bergen, Norway in 1938. This prewar schene descibes a society on the countryside and in the city of Norway at that time, Norway being a small and poor country in the outskirts, way north, in Europe. On the countryside everyone is more or less poor, whereas in the city there is a big distance between the rich and the poor. The city of Bergen has some dominating families of "old money", the socalled "clan of ten", who rule the society ruthlessly. The city picture is dominated by being way behind the technical evolution elsewhere in the world. The appearance of cars is rear, even a bath tub and water closet are rare among the average population. Also the education level is low, except for in the higher circles of society. At the same time there is an awakening dramatic political situation happening in Europe, with Nazi Germany becoming an increasing treath. With this background tapestry the main caracter, Edvard Knausen, is going through a major change in his personal live, moving from the countryside to the city at the age of 26. He has a rare musical talent, which quickly exposes him to the upper circles of the Bergen society: on one hand his talent, on the other his lack of social skills in such circles.

This story was originally published in Day One, a weekly literary journal dedicated to short fiction and poetry from emerging writers.

After a trial separation, Mark and Gail Ross take a brief trip to their family’s cabin in an effort to resume their marriage. The effort is mostly Mark’s; he has spent the preceding year with a string of boyfriends and lovers, and it is unclear whether he can convince Gail—or even himself—that he belongs with her. As for Gail, she must determine whether her comfort with and deep affection for her husband are enough to allow her to let go of the pain he’s inflicted. A nuanced glimpse into a marriage that is as sweet as it is heartbreaking, Pontoon Ride on the Wine-Dark Lake captures how sometimes it’s the little moments that can repair a relationship’s biggest fractures.

As an F-16 fighter pilot, Darwin Cole was a family man on top of his world. Now, he’s a washout drunk, living alone in a trailer in the Nevada desert. Haunted by what he saw on the display of the Predator drone he “piloted”—an Afghan child running for her life—he reluctantly joins three journalists seeking to discover the identity of the anonymous, and possibly rogue, intelligence operative who called the shots in his last ill-fated mission.   On the trail of this operative, Cole and his new allies will discover the dark heart of our surveillance culture, with connections to intelligence, to the military, and to the unchecked private contractors who stand to profit richly from the advancing technology . . . technology not just for use “over there,” but for right here, right now.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The brave new world of drone warfare - 4+ By Blue in Washington An original and first-rate thriller that opens with the growing phenomenon of the long distance strike via predator drone on a human target in Afghanistan. The kill is made, but the operator, AF Captain Darwin Cole sitting in a Nevada bunker, quickly sees that his drone has killed women and children and has cost a little girl her right arm and maybe her life. The event pushes Cole over the edge and his trauma eventually costs him his job and family. A year later, he is lured out a self-imposed hermit's life by three journalists who are out to start a public discussion of the growing use of drones by the military and intelligence services. The expanded team of four sets up in Maryland near the installation of a private surveillance company holding major U.S. government contracts and likely involved in a number of drone misfires in Afghanistan, including the one witnessed by Captain Cole. The storyline picks up forward, if serpentine, motion as additional players are added to the plot and more connections between the military and private contractors become visible. There are some entertaining surprises as the story moves toward a satisfying conclusion. This is a well-paced, timely and skillfully written mystery that raises some ethical questions about the future of drones. It also provokes some thinking by the reader about the growing threat of quickly expanding public surveillance via drone and a possible future of long distance attacks by the expanding number of countries and terrorist groups inevitably arming themselves with cheap-to-make drone weapons. Good read and recommended.

By Randy Johnson Quite a fun read, an interesting look at the burgeoning field of drone flights and the implications for domestic surveillance. Can anybody say "Big Brother is watching you!"Darwin Cole once piloted F-16 fighter planes. Then he was moved to piloting drones from outside of Las Vegas. An incident, a royal screw-up in the Middle East, has him spot three children when it was too late to stop it.Cole went to pieces, got a dishonorable discharge, lost his family, and ha him living alone, with no power, in an old trailer. And mostly drinking. When three reporters find and convince him to help find the shadowy figure that screwed up his mission, it launches a fast moving thriller that kept me turning the pages,Good read.Fast Moving Look At Drone technology

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fly Me To Your Secrets By Ken C. When I see that Dan Fesperman has a new novel out, I get excited. And it was with excitement that I read Unmanned. Admittedly that excitement waned from time to time, but all in all, Unmanned is a fine novel, one that both gives us some thrills and also educates as to what the future holds with drones becoming more and more practical, and even smaller, so that their commercial and military uses proliferate. We might not like that. As a matter of fact, we won't. Their capacity to invade any semblance of privacy we have left is enormous. The ride we took on the drone in the climax of the novel was quite exciting, and I can see the attraction. I wish I had one of my own! The novel is clear that the outsourcing of federal work. along with the revolving door for federal and military employees to the huge military-industrial complex is quite troubling. Good novel, well worth reading, but occasionally slow. That of course makes the high points more welcome.

The most beguiling and distinctive debut novel of the season: the Battle of Waterloo…as told by a rabbit.

On June 17, 1815, the Duke of Wellington amassed his troops at Hougoumont, an ancient farmstead not far from Waterloo. The next day, the French attacked―the first shots of the Battle of Waterloo―sparking a brutal, day-long skirmish that left six thousand men either dead or wounded.

William is a white rabbit living at Hougoumont today. Under the tutelage of his mysterious and wise grandmother Old Lavender, William attunes himself to the echoes and ghosts of the battle, and through a series of adventures he comes to recognize how deeply what happened at Waterloo two hundred years before continues to reverberate. “Nature,” as Old Lavender says, “never truly recovers from human cataclysms.”

The Sage of Waterloo is a playful retelling of a key turning point in human history, full of vivid insights about Napoleon, Wellington, and the battle itself―and a slyly profound reflection on our place in the world.

Review “Move out from the towering shadow of Watership Down, suspend your disbelief and enjoy the bold conceit of seeing a pivotal moment in history from the height of a blade of grass…. A wise white rabbit is as good a guide as any to helping us think through war.” (Laline Paull - The New York Times Book Review)“Inventive [and] beautifully written.” (Thomas Chatterton Williams - San Francisco Chronicle)“Lovely…. Francombe can turn a phrase, no doubt. There’s an air of naturalist poetry to her words.” (Jason Sheehan - NPR.org)“A debut filled with history and whimsy…. Part historical chronicle, part adventure story, Francombe’s unconventional debut hops along in crowd-pleasing fashion.” (Jaclyn Fulwood - Shelf Awareness)“A playful retelling.” (Allison Chopin - New York Daily News)“Gentle and poetic, [The Sage of Waterloo] is an eloquent reflection on the nature and cost of war…Everything in this little book is perfect.” (David Kaymer - Library Journal (starred review))“Engaging, pleasantly written, and endlessly inventive: all promising signs and a reader's delight.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Written by a concert pianist who abides in Europe, about the Battle of Waterloo seen through the eyes of an erudite bunny…The Sage of Waterloo [is] dignified and poignant, as well as sad, with a gentle humor befitting gentle lagomorphs.” (Lydia Millet - BookPage)

The tale waswritten by an amazing new author who researchedthe history of the battle in so much detail that she includedmany not well known snippets of the battle, the soldiers, andpeople who lived in the area. She included detailed aftermathsof the war, even those that one does not normally think about.Readers might even derive that the philosophy of the rabbits may beworthy to ponder.

Rabbit Reveals War's Truth By Sheila Churchill A rabbit's eye view of a large battle would be very small indeed, but somehow this family has accumulated a tremendous amount of knowledge over 200 years, narrated by a rabbit named William. I can't recommend this book who anyone who can't suspend their skepticism for a few hours and indulge in some rabbit-based fantasy. There are philosophy, mythology and a lot of well-researched history here. A small volume, but not a quick read, I am looking forward to rereading it . Although I love reading about this era, including the works of Bernard Cornwell, I have never wanted to see the battlefield until now.

Beard The Giants of Pulp finally come together in an official novel penned by the only writer who could tackle such a crossover and do both characters justice, Will Murray. That said, this is more a Shadow novel than a Doc Savage thriller – but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it's not bad at all. It's just what the pulp fan ordered. If you’ve ever wondered how each of the Titans could exist in the other’s world, THE SINISTER SHADOW lays it all out and convinces you it could happen, and not jarringly. Again, The Shadow seems to get the focus here, but maybe that’s because Murray’s really trying to capture the atmosphere and menace of the dark hero’s first few years of adventures. The book’s villain is very much a Shadow adversary and while Doc and his crew have much to do, the tone and feel belong to The Shadow’s very specific world. Thankfully, I never once believed it couldn’t work, because Murray makes it happen with a smooth delivery, which owes to his years of handling the Man of Bronze’s tales. And when Doc and The Shadow square off – hoohah, its cause to sit up and pay attention. Form encounter to encounter, the novel delivers those scenes we’ve all imagined for decades in a multitude of what-if scenarios. And the crossovers don’t stop with those two; our heroes’ operatives mix it up, too, and the matches are almost as much fun as those of their legendary bosses.Murray also sets out to explain a few things concerning The Shadow’s background and the man beneath the cloak and high collar, but fair warning: some things are set out before the reader in stark relief. Doc’s not the kind of guy to let shadows lie. He shines a bright light into a few dark corners…and risks exposure of a bit of darkness on his side of the scoreboard, too.In all, THE SINISTER SHADOW id the first Doc Savage “Wild” adventure I feel comfortable awarding five stars since SKULL ISLAND. Bravo, Will Murray.

Will Murray is probably the only living writer who has a full mastery of the two greatest pulp heroes of the 1930's. The novel is set in the autumn of 1933. somewhere during the interval between the classic Shadow novels, THE BLACK FALCON and THE COBRA. The plot brilliantly ties up some loose ends from the first three Shadow novels. Murray is superb with continuity, but that is not the greatest strength of the novel. The confrontations between The Shadow and Doc Savage are phenomenal, and far surpassed any previous meetings of the two classic characters in comic book adaptations., Murray long ago established himself as the true heir to Lester Dent, the creator of Doc Savage. Now he has proven that he is worthy of the mantle of Walter Gibson, the creator of The Shadow.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. kind of like an NBA player or Garth Brooks) By Mark Justice I would think writing a novel that teams up two superstars of pulp would be a mighty juggling act. After all, the writer has to be careful not to give short shrift to either hero, to make certain that neither star comes off as a loser. In The Sinister Shadow, author Will Murray proves to be a hell of a juggler. The Sinister Shadow takes place fairly early in the recorded careers of both Doc Savage and The Shadow. Here’s where the balancing act comes into play. Murray establishes the world of both heroes perfectly. He captures the mood and the tone of Walter Gibson’s early, spectral version of The Shadow (who tends to speak of himself in the third person, kind of like an NBA player or Garth Brooks). And Murray is, of course, well-versed in delivering a Doc Savage story that would make Lester Dent proud. The question becomes “Can the two distinctive world blend?”I’m happy to say yes. Murray manages to make it work, as both Doc and The Shadow are drawn into a mystery from different directions. In an early encounter, The Shadow seems to be the craftier of the two, leading to a remarkable scene on the side of the building that house’s Doc Savage’s headquarters. Doc proves resilient, however, which leads to several scenes that will have long-time fans slobbering with joy. Without spoiling too much, one great scene involves The Man of Bronze discovering a certain sanctum illuminated by blue light. Another takes place at a “college”/hospital in upstate New York.Murray also delivers a terrific pulp villain who calls himself The Funeral Director. The Sinister Shadow is three times (or more) longer than either character’s pulp magazine adventures, but thanks to Murray’s prowess as a writer, the pages quickly fly by.The Sinister Shadow is a powerful pairing of two pulp legends. I only hope Murray plans to turn his talents to a new Shadow novel soon.

A literary exploration that asks seeks to answer the question: Have I lived the life I intended?

Jesse Browner, a novelist with a full-time job at the United Nations, has written a book reminiscent of the Talking Heads classic song "Once in a Lifetime." Based on an essay he wrote for Poets and Writers Magazine, Browner asks hard questions about life choices, about the tendency to believe there is a parallel life that might have been more fulfilling or more free. He wonders: Is the true artist made by single-minded devotion to his craft? Do we compromise our dreams in service to responsibilities to family and jobs?

These questions prompted Browner to take a hard look at himself and the evolution that brought him to this moment of existential doubt. In How Did I Get Here? he divides his adult life into five distinct phases—ambition, love, work, fulfillment, and serenity. Sketching portraits of himself at every stage, he looks for idiosyncrasies, commonalities, and clues—signposts that lead him to today. He also draws on the lives of others, from Franz Kafka to his sister to indie rocker Elliott Smith, in search of understanding. What he finds in his courageous quest is bravely honest and inspiring, touching on what it means to live a life with intention and meaning.

How Did I Get Here?: Making Peace with the Road Not Taken, by Jesse Browner

Review “A beautifully crafted, soul-searching investigation that cannot leave us unmoved…Jesse Browner breaks wide open our tendency to let life ebb away in a complacent opacity, allowing essential questions to surge forth: should I seek fame, wealth and power or freedom, creativity and fulfillment?” (Matthieu Ricard, author of Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life’s Most Important Skill)“Could this book be any more intriguing? Wise, self-effacing, sweet, and scorning, to our great privilege, Jesse Browner, on the hallowed path of the classic seeker, rends open his heart and mind. How lucky we are to be invited on his hero’s journey!” (Joel Rose, author of The Blackest Bird and co-author of Get Jiro!)“Literarily informed and philosophically engaged, Browner’s essays are infused with a rueful ambivalence as well as an all-too-human longing for possible pasts and futures.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Exceptional.” (Library Journal)“Jesse Browner’s extraordinary inquiry into the path taken is hilarious, moving, and always wonderful. Sometimes baffled, sometimes amused, sometimes horrified, he offers a mid-way meditation on a life half-lived and clears, for himself and the reader, a new space of hope.” (Joseph O'Neill, author of Netherland and The Dog)“A beautifully written, erudite, and thought-provoking examination of the underpinnings of a creative life.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“Wistful, emboldening, questioning, provocative, and whimsical... Browner understands thatthere are many ways to get to where one wants to be. He offers inspiration on both literary and personal levels.” (Booklist)By turns hilarious, profound, and unexpected, [Browner] leaves us to understand that while our lives may have wound up on a different shore than the one we’d set our sights on, that’s not such a bad thing. The only possible us is the us who happened. (Karen Karbo, Los Angeles Review of Books)

From the Back Cover

A literary exploration that seeks to answer the question: Have I lived the life I intended?

Based on an essay he wrote for Poets & Writers magazine, Jesse Browner, a novelist who finds himself torn between his creative calling and a full-time job in the civil service, asks hard questions about the choices life imposes on us, and our tendency to believe in a parallel, alternative existence where we might have felt more fulfilled, more free, more true to ourselves. He wonders: Is the genuine artist made by single-minded devotion to his craft? Do we compromise our dreams in service to family and work? In the face of life's inevitable disappointments, how do we learn to reassess our own achievements and live without regret?

These questions prompted Browner to take a hard look at the lifelong journey that brought him to this moment of existential doubt. He divides his adult life into five distinct phases: ambition, love, work, fulfillment, and wisdom. Sketching portraits of himself at each stage, he looks for the idiosyncrasies, blind spots, and commonalities that led him to question every assumption he has ever made about who he is and the nature of his ambitions, his successes, and his failures. He also draws on the lives of others, from Franz Kafka to indie rocker Elliott Smith to his own sister, in search of understanding and guidance. What he finds in his courageous quest is inspiring and honest—sometimes brutally so—touching on what it means to live a life with intention and meaning.

About the Author

Jesse Browner is the author of six books, including The Uncertain Hour and Everything Happens Today. He lives and works in New York City.

By Brett Goldman Jesse Browner's intriguing title caught my eye - the question was familiar, too familiar, one that had haunted me since the onset of adulthood. His series of reflections on the life not led is exploratory, anecdotal, and ultimately uplifting. Is the fantasy life we often imagine really all that it's cracked up to be? Do those who live such lives really feel the fulfillment we imagine we would? Browner channels his resentment, jealousy, and fear into a self-deprecating gaze into his mental mirror. What he sees will surprise you. And you'll be motivated to do the same.

By Jakela I really was looking forward to this book from the endorsement from dharma teacher Ricard.Unfortunately, the book is a slog. Just another person trying to figure out and rationalize their story--even if they deny that's what they're doing.Along the way, I found out that the author was one of Ricard's translators: hence the blurb. This will make me much more circumspect regarding Ricard's books.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Words from a wise author--have a seat, listen, and learn By S. R. Tjaden For me, the best parts of this book were the sections in which Jesse talks about the creative process and the imagined parallel lives that artists often believe they should be living. I think that--all too often--it's easy for artists to fall into despair that their creative work isn't achieving the heights that they imagined. But Jesse's reflections helped to guide me to an understanding that we need to see the creative process in a more realistic light--that it's not healthy to allow our art to be our source of happiness. That it's more healthy to draw our happiness from other aspects of our lives--our family, our friends, perhaps our careers. Because we don't create art in order to be happy. We create art because we need to. We must. We have messages to communicate. Sometimes those messages are heard and respected. And sometimes they are ignored. There were sections of the book that I felt belabored points and I found myself skimming through these sections. But overall, I felt that this was a satisfying read for all artists, no matter what they are creating. As a fellow artist, it recalibrated my compass, and I feel very lucky to have found this book in my 30s.

A Newman When reading victorian fiction, with its prim and child-like heroines, I sometimes long for a story about someone who is neither long suffering or innocent. Vanity Fair is the perfect remedy. Becky Sharp probably is the wickedest woman in 19th century fiction and one of the most delightful. Whether facing uncertainties at the battle of Waterloo, or seeking a rich protector, or FINALLY marrying for money (this husband disappears before the money does), Becky is determined to have the kind of life with which she would like to become accustomed. This book is pure pleasure since the reader is always wondering "what is she going to do next." This book cannot be praised too highly.

One of the 2 or 3 Greatest Novels in the English Language By Andy Todes Hilarious, scathing, wistful, beautiful.Incredibly modern; the language is as fresh as if Thackeray had penned it yesterday.A pure delight from beginning to end.If you're one of those booklovers who reads as much as anthing else in order to get to know the author, in order to sit down and share a beer with him (or her) as it were, then this is your book. You will come to adore Thackeray, to wish he were your best friend. In short, if you love Henry Fielding's brand of humor and conversation with the reader in Tom Jones, then you will love Vanity Fair. This Penguin edition features a brilliant introduction by John Carey, in which he draws comparisons between Vanity Fair and another sumpreme work of art: War and Peace. In fact he argues that without Vanity Fair, there may never have been a War and Peace.Ahh, Dobbin. A character that will live in my heart forever.

My favorite book of all time is "Vanity Fair". Why? Because it seems to be the intellectual progenitor of both "War and Peace" as well as "Gone With the Wind," each of which themselves could have been my favorite book. All three epics occur within a major war, all three have main characters involved in massive and famous battles, and all three describe two types of women waiting for their men to survive or perish in battle: the "Scarlett Ohara - Becky Sharpe" prototype and the "Melanie - Amelia" prototype. For me the theme of this novel, and of "Gone With the Wind", is that its the Melanies and Amelias of the world that make life worth living and fighting for (when fighting is truly necessary). In this novel, Becky Sharpe is an anti-heroine in the same way that Scarlett Ohara was. I hope that some author, somewhere, is now writing an epic novel that deals similarly with modern times and the current war.

I read this book as a little girl in Germany in the late 1940's and I bought the original German version again to re-live my reading experiences as a child.Even though life on the mountain with her grandfather and the goats, surrounded by all this Swiss postcard quality beauty, sounds pretty nice and even funny at times but that does not make up for the very sad story of a small orphaned girl that gets passed on from poor relative to poorer relative until her cousin finds a way to remove her to a foreign city in a neighboring country, many miles away from what she loved. She is hired (no pay) out to a rich household run by servants to function as amusement for a paralyzed daughter of a mostly absent father. The fact that she is much younger than the patient and has not had any schooling is not considered while she is ordered to attend homeschooling 8 grades above her skill level. She is treated as a lowly servant and expected to show gratitude above all.It goes on and on until the little girl is so homesick that her health is threatened and she is shipped back home. I cried and ached for her just as I did 67 years ago when I promised myself to never let anyone abuse me or patronize me no matter how rich or important they are.Spare your kids this horrible story.

46 of 48 people found the following review helpful. too many issues to recommend By B. Capossere The Accidental Alchemist by Gigi Pandian is the first in a new mystery series; unfortunately, it didn’t leave me much interested in reading the next two. Pandian has some decent ideas to work with, but issues with plausibility, pacing, choice of detail, and style had me thinking about giving up from about the halfway point on. To be honest, had it not been a review book, I almost certainly would have, making this one a “not recommended” from me.Zoe Faust, a centuries-old alchemist who specializes in plants, has just relocated from France to Portland, seeking, she says, a more normal life. Normal, however, is not in the cards, something she quickly realizes when out of her just-uncrated belongings hops a living gargoyle, one who tells her he is slowly dying and she—thanks to her alchemical knowledge—is his only hope. The gargoyle (Dorian Robert Houdin) would be bad enough, but soon Zoe is embroiled in a murder investigation and then an attempted murder investigation. Throw in a troublesome yet needy teen boy, and things quickly go from bad to worse and from worse to potentially disastrous, if not fatal.Stylistically, the language is generally flat, simplistic or just plain awkward. Exposition or historical tidbits are often clumsily inserted into the text, more interruptions than digressions. Plus, there are several stylistic tics that just got to me after a while, such as Dorian’s constant “Mon Dieu!” exclamations. Somewhat in that same vein was the odd amount of page-space/detail given to food in the novel. Dorian is a gourmet chef, while Zoe is a committed vegan/herbalist, one who believes strongly that one’s diet is essential to one’s physical and mental/spiritual health. Which is fine, but at times I felt like I was reading not characterization but propaganda (and I say this, by the way, as one who has been a strict pesco-vegetarian for over 30 years). At one point one of my notes simply says, “Enough with the food!”. In her afterward, Pandian offers up some recipes, and I wish she had done just that and removed about 90 percent of the food details in the actual narrative. Pandian also had a habit of repeating certain lines (not verbatim but concepts).Beyond the style issues, I also had several problem with the plot, the most frequent being a lack of plausibility. One example is when Zoe is not allowed in her house because of it being a crime scene, but even though she is at least a person of interest (and perhaps an actual suspect), she’s allowed to stay in her trailer fifteen feet from the taped off area. This sort of problem arose again and again, making the entire work feel not fully thought out or closely edited in ways large and small. While Zoe is likable enough, I never fully bought her as someone with hundreds of years of life experience, either in her thoughts or her actions. Other characters were either too obtuse too often, were too coincidentally knowledgeable in relatively arcane topics, or were, like Dorian’s “French-iness” more caricature than richly developed realistic people.I don’t like to belabor flaws, so I’ll stop there. As always in these cases, I wish I could be more positive about a work that an author obviously put their heart into, not to mention their time and sweat, but in this case, that wasn’t enough. Not recommended.(originally appeared on fantasyliterature.com)

I struggled through this one By Yzabel (Note: I received a copy through NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.)An interesting premise, but one I had trouble stayed focused on, and I just could never push myself to read more than a chapter or two before switching to something else. The first chapters, with Dorian popping into Zoe’s life, his predicament, the book that needed deciphering, hinted at a good modern fantasy story. Unfortunately, the mystery that followed was too flat, and took too long to properly unveil. It could have been more of an adventure, yet it wasn’t. There wasn’t even that many alchemical concepts and knowledge to munch on.I’d chalk a large part of this to the main character going around in circles about some things, always recalling her ability with plants, how she was not a night person, needed her healthy foods, etc. There was more cooking and vegan recipes than actual alchemy here. I know they say alchemy kind of started in the kitchen and all that, but the metaphor didn’t bring much to the story for me. I mean, it’s the Accidental Alchemist, not the Accidental Cook, so…In turn, the sense of urgency got lost somewhere along the road. After a murder and another murder attempt, with Zoe having the potential to be seen either as the culprit or as the next victim, I would have expected more tension. When clues finally started appearing, and Zoe at last started taking them into account, I was past caring, and just wanted to finish the novel to see if Dorian could be saved. The ending, by the way, was too rushed to my liking. I don’t have anything against McGuffins and McGuffin-plots used to introduce deeper, larger stakes; but I tend to feel frustrated when a story begins with such a plot, goes on reminding us regularly that it’s important, then brings a quick resolution after having focused on something completely different. It just makes me stop caring. (I’ll be honest, though, and mention that while I was reading this book, I was also reading another one that suffered from the exact same problem of “rushed ending”; I suppose they slightly “tainted” each other for me in that regard.)(A minor quibble as well regarding Dorian’s speech patterns: speaking as a French expat living in the UK, seeing bits of French thrown in the middle of sentences is definitely weird. Whole sentences or exclamations, all right—it’s only natural to start speaking in your own language, before remembering you should switch to another one. But in my own experience, when this happens, we usually tend to stop and start again in English. For instance, I haven’t heard any other French expat finishing an English sentence with “n’est-ce pas”, so when the character did it, it kind of felt like “Hey, here’s a reminder I’m French”. Not needed in my opinion.)On the bright side, I still think the basic idea was great, and I liked Dorian’s character in general, as well as the questions his existence raised: how he came to be, sure, but also how other people perceived him. When he recounted having to pass for a disfigured man who only worked for blind cooks and refused to let anyone else in the room, so that he could do what he loved without people freaking out, that was awfully sad—and a bit reminiscent of relationships such as the ones between Frankenstein’s monster and De Lacey. I always like when similar themes arise in a story (even though it was underexploited here).

There really isn't much here that is intriguing, the writing is workmanlike, but it doesn't transport you into another world. The characters are pretty clichéd, even the gargoyle. And the vegan propaganda (beat me over the head with a stick for the whole book), incredibly tedious. I LOVE to cook... but the book doesn't wax lyrical about the vegan cooking, it preaches and bores.... wait, what is this review of a mystery doing talking about vegan cooking?.... that's my point exactly.Having said all those snarky things, it still kept my interest, to the end. I finished it, and just felt like ... this Could have been so much Better.
