When young Mark Robarts was leaving college, his father might well declare that all men began to say all good things to him, and to extol his fortune in that he had a son blessed with so excellent a disposition. This father was a physician living at Exeter. He was a gentleman possessed of no private means, but enjoying a lucrative practice, which had enabled him to maintain and educate a family with all the advantages which money can give in this country. Mark was his eldest son and second child; and the first page or two of this narrative must be consumed in giving a catalogue of the good things which chance and conduct together had heaped upon this young man's head.

By JAD If you shy away from Victorian novels because you had to read A TALE OF TWO CITIES in high school, it is time to give these treasures another try. Admit it, you are a bit older now. So are these books by Dickens, Disraeli, Thackary, Austen, the Bronte sisters, and, yes, my personal favorite, the great man himself, Anthony Trollope. Why read something that was written a century and a half ago? Because Trollope knew more about the human psyche than Freud and Jung put together, and wrote about it not with a clinician's jaundiced eye, but with incredible tenderness and love. And entertainingly, to boot!If you have been reading the Jan Karon novels about life in a small North Carolina highlands town, as it revolves around an Episcopal priest named Father Tim and his colorful parishioners, well!--this is where it all began. A book version of finding the source of the Nile.Trollope began what Karon has revised and restyled so engagingly. Trollope invented the "church and town" novel, with what have become known as his Bartchester Series of novels, all centering around the doings of a fictitious cathedral town and its outlying countryside. Not the first in the series, (it is the fourth but perhaps the best), FRAMLEY PARSONAGE traces the faith, home and political lives of a number of intertwining families. Here you will find love, ambition, political maneuvering, gambling debts, pretension, humility, envy, forgiveness, hate, romance. If it sounds like a slice of modern life-it is. We and the Victorians are so much alike; the human condition does not change. In this delightful mix of clerical, political and romantic intrigue, you will meet everyone from the alarmingly meddlesome bishop's wife, Mrs. Proudie, to the original dizzy blond, Griselda Grantly. All set in the green countryside and the bustling streets of London. The story centers around the bright, popular pastor, Mark Robarts and his charming wife, but it is his sister, Lucy, who will capture your heart as perhaps the loveliest of heroines in any novel.I hope you are intrigued enough to be convinced that there is more to Nineteenth Century British Literature than SILAS MARNER. Moreover, I hope you will read this and the other Trollope works. You may recall that in addition to being one of the most successful and acclaimed novelist of all times, Trollope was also a successful and acclaimed civil servant-his "day job" was with the British postal system-he invented the corner mailbox. His more than 40 novels and outstanding autobiography were written in his very disciplined "spare time" in which he produced a specific number of pages every morning before departing punctually for his office. Not only a genius of time management, Trollope was and is a guardian of the human heart. What? You say you would rather start at the beginning of the Bartchester series? By all means! But if you do not, try FRAMLY PARSONAGE first. Dip your toe in there-for you cannot dip your toe into any of his books without emerging the better, having done so.If you find this review helpful you might want to read some of my other reviews, including those on subjects ranging from biography to architecture, as well as religion and fiction.

Wilson Young clergyman Mark Robarts receives a choice parish, thanks to Lady Lufton, the mother of one of his university friends. However, Robarts, though newly and happily married, is not content to settle into the life of a country minister. Lured by a wealthy and worldly set of new acquaintances, he finds himself pushed into living beyond his means and, worse yet, being held legally responsible for another man's bad debts.Meantime the young Lord Lufton has been smitten by the charms of Robarts' sister Lucy, much to the displeasure of his aristocratic mother. It take a great act of magnanimity on Lucy's part - helping the impoverished Crawley family during a crisis (the Crawleys are more prominent in "The Last Chronicle of Barset") - to finally convince Lady Lufton that Lucy is worthy of her son. This beautifully written novel contrasts the simpler integrity, though sometimes snobbish values, of the old ways with the more meretriciously glamorous lives of a newer society. As usual, Trollope has produced a multitude of characters whose motives are completely credible, and his depiction of the different social groups provides a most vivid kaleidoscope of Victorian life and attitudes. As always, there is nothing outdated in Trollope's sure insight into human nature.

Means As a sixty-two year old professor of English literature and a compulsive reader, I have read many, many novels in my life, and most of Trollope's (for they are, indeed, habit-forming), but this one is perhaps my favorite. I have not read it since 1982, but when I open the cover and look at the fly-leaf, I feel the special delight that I felt when I first read it. Like Austen's Emma, it is one of those perfect books you should not miss.

It was a foreign concept that I really needed to learn how to do. Well, thankfully, this step-by-step guide showed me exactly how I could do it myself! It showed me how to check the environment, how to prepare, and other general principles of foraging. There are also other helpful tips that any beginner (or even intermediate) forager will find beneficial. I really appreciate the time the author took to write this informative guide for beginners to foraging.

I am a lover of all things green and try to grow my own vegetables. When walking in the woods nearby I sometimes noticed plants that looked as if they were edible but -of course- I never dared to pick them and eat them. With the help of this book I feel confident that I can. I also know what plants grow in what season. A whole new world opens up for me!

Somehow if i stuck in any forest i can survive probably because after read this book i know which wild plant i have to eat which isn't harmful. Inside the last chapter of the book i found benefits of wild edible foraging. This chapter is so important to get more ideas about wild plants and their benefit. You can make business with those plants.

Of coures when I read a series, I always read then backwards. this I belive is one of the first. I have been reading this series and Lou Prophet is a man that gets the job done one way or another. This is no Louis L'amour. These is more blood and sex, but I like it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Talented Writer By writetrak Westerns should be more than simple 'Aw, shucks! Shoot-em ups' and Brandvold takes them into a more believeable realm with true-to-life characters, well written action sequences, and an accuracy of someone who well understands that real life cowboys and western figures were rugged, salty, and as tough as they had to be. Brandvold knows his territory, weapons, and craft and like Elmore Leonard's westerns his books too provide more than just surface stories and settings. I found his books by accident and because they're such good entertainment I'll remember them on purpose. Now scractch yourself, spit, and and say $%#&*, like a real cowboy woulda done and enjoy the book!

I not only have pictures taken when I was in the army, but the camera I took them with, and the instructional booklet. And, of course, the original camera case. Boy, did I relate to this little book. This little book consisted of common sense – and that it really what we need to some order in our `clutter`. These logical steps – one by one – were tailor made for me. I had no idea how much I needed this book – and I am sure glad I found it. I feel 50 pounds lighter just knowing how much stuff I disposed on – in an orderly manner – thanks to this book. This is just what I needed.

“THIS IS RAGE is that rare book – a fascinating, fast-paced, really smart thriller. Part action/adventure story set in the wilds of Silicon Valley, and part insider's exposition of some of the major inner workings of our contemporary economy and of the secrets of today's High Tech 'Masters of the Universe' – Ken Goldstein succeeds in making this a debut that will make your heart race – even as it gives you plenty to think about." – Naomi Wolf, author of GIVE ME LIBERTY "I worked with Ken Goldstein at Disney: and since I knew he could write, I encouraged him to do just that, to write a novel. As impressed as I always was with him as an executive, I'm equally impressed with what he accomplished with a pen (or maybe a computer)." – Michael Eisner "Ken Goldstein knows the ins and outs of Silicon Valley – the customs of the land and where the bodies are buried. I would read anything he wrote, non-fiction or fiction, set on that fascinating terrain." – Will Schwalbe, author of THE END OF YOUR LIFE BOOK CLUB "Given Ken Goldstein's pedigree as a major internet CEO whose vision has significantly shaped today's digital world, it's no surprise that his first novel takes us on a thrilling front-of-the-coaster rocket ride through the Valley of Silicon. While This is Rage is surely required reading for all high-tech and deal-savvy action/thriller fans, it is an absolute crystal ball for radio broadcasters who are still scratching their heads as to the future of their industry." – Mitch Dolan, Former President, ABC Radio Station Group This is the story of Investors, Bankers, and Operators in Silicon Valley and the variation on real they’re creating for our consumption. This is the story of a disgraced shock jock turned Internet radio phenomenon and how he becomes the catalyst he never imagined being. This is the story of two entrepreneurs-turned kidnappers-turned anti-heroes. This is business in the Twenty-first Century. This is the unpredictability of the human element. This is rage.

This Is Rage: A Novel of Silicon Valley and Other Madness, by Ken Goldstein

Review "I loved it. Ken Goldstein's debut novel, after several years of working as a start-up advisor and corporate executive, is accessible and very funny in its own way. Moreover, it brings up some controversial questions involving the morality behind business dealings."

  • At The Inkwell
"Those of us who are not part of the circus that is Silicon Valley watch from the outside with a certain level of fascination. Goldstein has been right in the center ring and now shares with us a story that could have happened there."
  • Cranky's Book Blog
"This is Rage by Ken Goldstein is a fascinating and dark look into the underbelly of life in the dog-eat-dog world of high-tech loyalties, deceits and the seduction of money and power that permeates the world of those with clout. It also embraces the rebel in us all through Kimo, proving that one voice can be heard, whether we like what its saying or not."
  • Tome Tender Book Blog
"This is a thriller novel based in the very real world of Silicon Valley, with many of the behind the scenes details and secrets that actually occur being shown between these pages."
  • Dew on the Kudzu
"This Is Rage is both a fun and erudite read--the author's fine education pokes through in many sentences loaded with intellect and amusement."
  • ForeWord Reviews

From the Inside Flap "I worked with Ken Goldstein at Disney:  and since I knew he could write, I encouraged him to do just that, to write a novel.  As impressed as I always was with him as an executive, I'm equally impressed with what he accomplished with a pen (or maybe a computer.)"

  • Mitch Dolan, Former President, ABC Radio Station Group
"Ken Goldstein has written a modern-day blockbuster! Smart, insightful, and engaging, the story takes us on a thrill ride through the circus-like madness of corporate American, the media, and government. It reveals with stunning clarity the inept and all-too-sinister characters that inhabit these worlds. You cannot help but think that Goldstein has had a front row seat and used his real life experiences to masterfully weave a fictional narrative that enlightens as much as it entertains. A must read."

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. a riveting read! By Shelley F. Fishkin This is a lively and engaging book by someone who knows Silicon Valley inside-out. The world of tech start-ups might seem an unlikely setting for a simultaneously comic and suspenseful crime novel/action story/thriller, but Ken Goldstein has pulled it off. He writes with the nuanced inside knowledge of someone who has spent over a decade in that world--and with more confidence, flair and energy than one might expect in a debut novel. It's hard to put down.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. extremely low signal to noise ratio By White Rabbit Apart from being twice as long as remotely defensible, this book contains NO interesting insights about the "inner workings of Silicon Valley," but lots of lola-granola aging hippie mantras with no relevance to Silicon Valley or any other aspect of the real world. NO, CEOs of publicly traded companies would NOT join their disgruntled low-level employees in a parking lot "walk-out"/Woodstock strike from work, nor would five million people across the country. NO, Boards would not consider, or reject, mergers "for the national good." NO, the initial tabling of a potential corporate acquisition would NOT cause an iconic CEO with 30 years tenure to "resign in disgrace." NO, most mergers cannot be wildly successful without a single lay-off. NO, most corporate stagnation problems cannot be solved by miraculously pulling a rabbit out of a hat within a few days of discovering that your core proprietary product has been hijacked and reverse engineered. NO, even moderately talented people in Silicon Valley do not remain unemployed for 4.5 years and end up homeless. NO, when two companies are considering merging, it does not take a Stanford professor or a stroke of genius to consider that if A can't acquire B, maybe B can acquire A. This doesn't even touch the totally inane and absurd plot, or the childish caricatures of Howard Stern and Sarah Palin (wittily dubbed Sally Payne for total secrecy). I was looking forward to an experience-based expose of how high-level deal financing and SV politics work, but I would have learned more from Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. Does not hold a candle to Kurt Anderson's Turn of the Century, or Den of Thieves, or Bonfire of the Vanities, or Po Bronson's The First 20 Million is Always the Hardest, or anything by Michael Lewis. The only "Rage" you will experience is when you realize you slogged through the whole 530-page book for nothing.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Comical and Sardonic View of Sillicon Valley By Ed Wolfman This is Rage: A Novel of Silicon Valley and Other Madness: In the style of Carl Hiaassen and Tom Wolfe, first time author Ken Goldstein shows a sharp eye for a well researched story involving the various players in the tech boom. It's sharp eyed, comical, and enlightening. Couldn't turn the pages fast enough!

Everyone has a story to tell…a life event or circumstance that is uniquely their own. In Reflections, twenty-two members of the Clarence Senior Center narrate short stories about their careers, military service, family lives, mothers, pets, immigration to America, and much more. Coming from a wide variety of backgrounds, some of the stories are short anecdotes of one-day events; others are longer tales of life experiences. Some are lighthearted and will bring a smile to your face. Others are poignant and just might bring a tear to your eye. But all are reflections of the lives and experiences of the folks who have shared their stories.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The only kiddie version of The Symposium in print By Jennifer Bardsley This book was written in 1894, but for the most part is pretty fresh. There are 27 chapters and each story is based on an ancient text. It has been fun as an adult to puzzle out the origins of each tale. My six year old is enjoying listening to this book too.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not as good as I hoped By Lawrence M. Sanger My little boy has been exposed to a fair bit of philosophy, since my own training was in that subject. I was looking for another philosophy book after we read The Little Book of Big Questions. I got this book thinking it might have a significant amount of Plato's philosophy in it. It has only a tiny bit of recognizable moral philosophy. Most of the selections are myths, and indeed 90-95% of this book is myth. Of course, like all myth, the stories had plenty of moralistic elements, but that's different from moral philosophy.Qua myth, this is a rather disappointing collection to me. My son has read a lot of myth, too, and he enjoyed this. First, I can't say that I like this writer much. She goes into great detail on relatively trivial points and leaves development of the main action/theme threadbare. On a couple of occasions Burt repeats the same myth, in a different way, from one chapter to the next, as if she had forgotten to take out one of the versions. Maybe there is a pedagogical reason for this, but I'm not so sure. As for those myths that I recognized (about half of them), quite a few seemed to have significant details changed.Primitive explanations of phenomena are presented in the author's voice, or when it isn't clear whether she's speaking for herself or on behalf of the myth source. Of course, there's nothing wrong with giving primitive explanations of phenomena in a book of myth--that's what a lot of myth is about, after all--but there is something wrong, and annoying, in writing daft (Burt's introduction uses the word "poetic") stuff that isn't clearly presented as myth.Similarly backwards is the gratuitous nineteenth-century moral sentiment that shouldn't be surprising in a book first published 1894. Don't get me wrong; I don't mind moralistic writing in the least. What I mind is the ham-handed style. Now, the good: my five-year-old liked this book a lot, and said he wanted he wanted to get all of Mary Burt's writings. On the other hand, when I asked him what he liked about the book, he said, "the font." Seriously, I think the style appealed to him--but then, considering that this is an old-fashioned (nineteenth century) style, that just shows you that he's a weird little kid. And, since this was not a "greatest hits of Greek & Roman myth" sort of book, we did get exposed to a greater variety of myth than we had had from our various other sources so far.In short, this gets three stars from us (I might have given it two if not for my son's opinion) simply because it's a fairly mediocre book, both as philosophy and as myth. It's not surprising it was out of print until revived by "Yesterday's Classics."

A collection of twelve short stories that showcases Tobias Wolff’s extraordinary talent, available in a deluxe paperback edition—part of Ecco’s The Art of the Story Series.

In The Garden of the North American Martyrs, Tobias Wolff’s first collection of short fiction, hailed the arrival of a major talent and the beginning of an acclaimed, bestselling career. In each of these sharply crafted stories, his characters, drawn from everyday life, stumble over each other in their baffled yet resolute search for the “right path.” Among the characters in these twelve stories are a teenage boy who tells morbid lies about his home life; a timid professor who, in the first genuine outburst of her life, pours out her opinions in spite of a protesting audience; a prudish loner who gives an obnoxious hitchhiker a ride; and an elderly couple on a golden anniversary cruise who endures the offensive conviviality of the ship’s social director.

I read This Boy's Life a few years ago, and while I enjoyed it, I wasn't blown away. But, In the Garden of North American Martyrs has given me a new and fierce admiration for Tobias Wolff. Each story is well-crafted without being overtly so. Like Raymond Carver, the style is slightly sparse and gives you the feeling that these people could be your next door neighbors. The characters have that regular joe quality, but they are never ever boring, it only makes the things happening to them more potent. From the man who wrecks his car, to the professor who has a one night stand, each tale is piercingly believable without ever being dull. If you're looking for the kind of short stories anyone could aspire to, read this book!

The collection spans the colorful spectrum of human emotion and experience, yet there remains a pleasant aftertaste of familiarity in his characters that makes us identify with that life on the page.Whether it's a tubby object of scorn, a disillusioned old man on his 50th anniversary cruise, or a young boy spinning tales for acceptance on a broken-down bus, we feel some sliver of our psyche being worked to the surface when reading these stories by Wolff. He's one of the best storytellers of our generation, and you deserve to discover him. Favorite stories in this collection: Smokers, The Liar, Maiden Voyage, Hunters in the Snow and In the Garden of North American Martyrs

Voice in the Garden By Nathaniel I have read Tobias Wolff for about 5 years now so I was very exited to read this collection of short stories, and needless to say I was not disappointed. The first story I ever read from Wolff was "Bullet in the Brain", and these stories followed in the same amazing tradition. Wolff is able to set the reader down in the middle of a scenario or time like no other author. This voice that he uses is so unique in each story and that you have a real sense of who you are dealing with in each story, and on a smaller level, each character. Wolff is able to create interest in situations and actions that border on plain on all other accounts. He creates characters that we see next to us on the bus everyday buy showing the reader who they are in the actions that carry out, and the how they deal with the certain situations they find themselves in. A hunting trip with friends becomes a look into the deepest crevasse of friendship; a fender bender turns into a trial in patience and trusting with people in everyday settings. Wolff is a master at writing these stories in a voice that speaks to every person, and yet is so unique that we must read on. This was a wonderful collection of stories and is highly recommended for any reader of fiction.

Arctic storms bring arctic shadows. America's last frontier has become a battleground of spirits when this epic tale of heroism, endurance, and young love picks up again in the frozen North--where Call of the Wild meets Brother Bear.                                                                ***** The 1909 All Alaska Sweepstakes is over. After three days of racing over icy crags, around bottomless crevasses, and through deepening snow, the spent Siberian huskies lay still. None complain. None sleep. Their watch eyes stay open. Drums of the ancestors' course through them and keep them silent when they want to howl to the Gatekeepers. One of their own is dead, their leader, Zellie. Something got her when she left the pack. The huskies instinctively know they are all prey.    The war of ghosts isn't over. Young guardians, ANYA and RUNE, both know it. They look for any place to hide. Xander and the surviving dogs must live.        The golem laughs at their upset. A fanatic born of inhuman evil, he's been able to spirit some of Anya and Rune's gods away, to his side. He rattles the iron bars of his cell, able to call on dark spirits to go after his enemies. Once free, he will crush all in Russia who dare stand in his way. No one can possess any means, any wealth. The Chukchi are kulaks, made so by their dogs. They will be the last to fall and so they must be liquidated first--the dogs, then the breeders, then the people--by any means conjured in this world or any other. The ice storm is coming.

Arctic Shadow (Watch Eyes Trilogy), by Joanne Sundell

Review PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY on Arctic Storm/Sept 2014Sundell's novel evokes the atmosphere of the early 20th century frontier, reminiscent at times of Jack London's work.HISTORICAL NOVEL SOCIETY -  Review of Arctic Storm  August 2014                           In 1908 and 1909 the 408 mile race from Nome to Candle and back was won by malamute teams, but in 1910 the 'Sibiriskiy haskis' triumphed, and this historical tidbit has the makings of a fascinating sequel to this delightful book.   Review of Arctic Shadow from NANCY PLAIN, Three-time Spur Award Winner and Will Rogers Medallion Award winner of Light on the Prairie.   "Arctic Shadow, the second volume in Joanne Sundell's beautifully written Watch Eyes Trilogy, continues the saga of the young Chukchi girl, Anya, and the seafaring Norwegian boy, Rune, as the two struggle to save the Siberian huskies that are more important to Anya than life itself ... readers of adventure and fantasy--and dog lovers everywhere--will be captivated by this haunting tale."               5 Star Review of Arctic Shadow from ANNE SCHROEDER - Award winning author of Cholama Moon and Ordinary Aphrodite - President, WWW / February 25, 2015 "In Book Two of the Watch Eyes Trilogy, Anya and Rune continue to battle evil forces that threaten their lives and that of Anya's Siberian Huskies. Joanne Sundell crafts her fantasy fiction story with deft strokes...Spellbinding historical fantasy fiction, even for readers who don't normally read fantasy." Review of Arctic Shadow from MICHAEL ZIMMER - author of The Poacher's Daughter"Set against the background of Alaska's gold rush frontier, Sundell's 'Arctic Shadow' is a gripping tale of good versus evil that transcends both the natural and spirit worlds, a young adult novel reminiscent of the 'Twilight' saga and 'The Hunger Games.'" CRITICAL ACCLAIM FOR JOANNE SUNDELL"Compelling characters and descriptive historical detail draw readers into this soul-wrenching drama, leaving them looking forward to the next installment in the Quaker and the Confederate duet, with Hearts Persuaded coming in September."-- Library Journal on Hearts Divided & Hearts Persuaded". . . Amelia and Aaron are admirable and wonderfully appealing . . . a good choice for all fiction collections . . ." -- Library Journal on A . . . My Name's Amelia". . . this is historical romance of a satisfying order . . . Sundell delivers a strong story . . . genre fans will be delighted."-- Publishers Weekly on The Parlor House Daughter

By Mary Aalgaard Arctic Shadow is a fantastic blend of suspense, frontier life in Alaska, and mysticism. Anya is a shaman and just barely understanding her powers. Her beloved dog Zellie is dead, yet she is a strong spirit inside Anya. Rune, a young man who befriends and helps her, also has connections with the spirit world and knows that the rages of storm and death come from a darker place where the evil spirits are trying to gain control. Joanne Sundell creates a fascinating blend of fantasy, history, and real life hardships. I keep rooting for Anya, and ache for her when cruel things happen to her and her Huskies. I’ll have to admit it was a little hard for me to read this book because of the physical cruelty towards the dogs, and the mental cruelty towards Anya. That’s also a good sign, because it means that Joanne did an excellent job of creating sympathy for her characters.

Arctic Suspense Intensifies By Robert Lee Murphy, Author of The Iron Horse Chronicles Joanne Sundell’s Arctic Shadow continues the fast pace established in Arctic Storm, the first book of her Watch Eyes Trilogy. In Arctic Shadow, Anya, the young Chukchi girl, and her seafaring friend, Rune Johansson, struggle to keep Anya’s beloved Siberian huskies safe from both human and supernatural harm. The dogs, in turn, try in their own ways to protect Anya and Rune from danger. Hate and destruction are directed toward the dogs from some unexpected sources. The relationship between Anya and Rune grows in complexity as they hover between openly declaring their love for each other and maintaining a standoffish attitude of respect. The potential doom pending at the conclusion of Arctic Shadow will leave the reader waiting impatiently for the final volume in the trilogy.

A wonderful story for young adults with 2 highly complex characters By Bucky A wonderful story for young adults with 2 highly complex characters, wise beyond their years and so compassionate towards their huskies. While reading this adventure, one feels like they are riding the waves in the harsh Arctic sea or running forever across the Arctic ice in a blinding snow storm. The Huskies comes to life with vivid description and multiple personalities. The story ended too soon and I am anxious for the next in the series.
