The Second Jungle Book, by Rudyard Kipling

Review ''It would take too long to enumerate even half of the marvelous touches by which the creatures miscalled dumb are made to live for us by Rudyard Kipling . . . The saddest words of this volume are those with which he closes, 'And this is the last of the Mowgli stories!' '' --Vogue

About the Author Nobel prize-winning writer Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India, but returned with his parents to England at the age of five. Influenced by experiences in both India and England, Kipling s stories celebrate British imperialism and the experience of the British soldier in India. Amongst Kipling s best-known works are The Jungle Book, Just So Stories, and the poems Mandalay and Gunga Din. Kipling was the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel prize for literature (1907) and was amongst the youngest to receive the award. Kipling died in 1936 and is interred in Poets Corner in Westminster Abbey.

The stories are a wonderful length for read alouds. The Jungle Book is, of course, a classic and not in need of a review; however, if your only exposure to the Jungle Book is Disney, please give this a try. I wanted to commend Sterling Publishers on making a quality, affordable edition of this and other classics. The paper quality was nice, not thin or translucent. The font is also pleasant--not to small or cramped. I know this may seem faint praise, but so many classics collections are very poorly executed. The price is also very agreeable--only slightly more than a paperback.

Over the years I have purchased many copies of each as presents. Both can be difficult to find in versions unaltered from the original. I have found this to be particularly true in the case of The Jungle Book. Some folks just don't seem to get that Kipling had a pretty good handle on what he was doing. One does not tamper with a Masterpiece. This version is the real thing. It reads word for word the same as the tattered, 40-year-old copy that I first read when I was eight years old. Add illustrations by Robert Ingpen that faithfully capture the emotion of the story and you have a real winner. For those who appreciate The Jungle Book as it was BEFORE it was adulterated by Mr. Disney and friends, this is a very worthy effort.

By Sagelady This is undoubtedly a beautiful book, but it should definitely be noted that it only contains the first half of Mowgli's story (i.e., through Shere Khan chapter only) - the text seems unabridged that far, but parts of both Jungle Books are missing - which I for one was misled about from other review(s).

A feminist novel about an abused and uneducated black woman's struggle for empowerment, the novel was praised for the depth of its female characters and for its eloquent use of black English vernacular. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

A powerful, uplifting book By JLind555 "The Color Purple" is one of the strongest statements of how love transforms and cruelty disfigures the human spirit that this reviewer has ever read. Alice Walker gives us Celie, 14 years old when the book opens, who has been raped, abused, degraded and twice impregnated by her father. After he takes her children away from her without a so much as a word, he marries her off like a piece of chattel to her husband, who is so cold, distant and inhuman to her that she can only refer to him as Mr; and this person deprives her of her sister Nettie, the only one who ever loved her.Celie manages to survive by living one day at a time. Her life is a series of flat, lifeless panoramas painted in browns and grays. Into this existence, if you can call it that, comes Shug Avery, her husband's mistress, who shows Celie her own specialness and uniqueness. A lot has been made about lesbianism in this book and all of it is beside the point. Celie isn't a lesbian, she is a human being in need of love and Shug Avery helps Celie realize that she is somebody worth loving and caring about. When Celie hurls her defiance into Mr's face -- "I'm poor, I'm black, I may be ugly... but I'm here", she is making an affirmation not only to him, but to the whole world; the reader can only say, along with Shug Avery, "Amen".When Celie finds the strength to leave Mr, he is left to face the reality of himself and what he sees isn't pretty; his transformation humanizes him and allows Celie to call him Albert, recognizing him as a person, as he finally recognizes her as one. The last chapter makes many readers go through half a box of Kleenex (Stephen Spielberg once said in an interview that he "cried and cried at the end" of the book), but Walker doesn't play cheap with the reader's emotions; she has a powerful story to tell and she tells it with such consummate skill and sensitivity that she brings us into it and makes it ours. This is a book to be treasured and read over and over again.

By yumi lam "The Color Pruple" provides a disturbing yet realistic account into the life of Celie, a young black woman with a tragic, abusive past who learns how to survive, how to let go of the past, and most of all how to love. I thought the medium with which Walker chose to write her book was perfect, the diary form of the novel establishes a immediate, intimate connection to the reader right from the start. Walker draws you in from the beginning, starting her book with a fairly graphic, explicit account of the physical abuse Celie's father subjected her to. I find Celie one of the most inspirational characters I have ever read about, she makes you believe that even in the darkest moments one can find hope, because for most women, life cannot get worse than Celie's.The language used throughout the book emphasizes Celie's lack of educationa and the naivety of a young girl, being black and living in a world where men dominate every aspect of life Celie has only learned how to be submissive, suppresing all her own hopes and dreams. Enter Shug Avery and Sofia, and we start to see the insiprational woman Celie is inside--Shug represents the independent woman that Cleie longs to be but cannot find the courage to become. Through Shug's love and encouragment Celie learns to stand up for herself. She emerges powerful, strong and intelligent. When I first started to read this book I felt I couldn't get past the first few letters. The violence that Celie encounters is unbearable to read, and sometimes I felt uncomfortable with many of the passages describing the graphic sexual abuse/actions and violence. However as I read on I realized the heart of the story overshadowed many of the disturbing scenes. This story is about self-discovery and the coming of age of a young owman long suppressed by the society she lives in. The sexual content is only there to try to express the freedom Celie was feeling, the self-discoveries she was making, the pain she was enduring--they weren't there to merely try to shock or discuss the reader.I love the character Celie, her strength is remarkable. Alice Walker shows us the transformation of a great woman--what she was, what she is capable of, and what she has finally become. It's an extraordinary novel, and I would reccomend it to anyone looking for inspiration or strong female role models.

But thank God I'm here"I have recently finished reading The Color Purple, by Alice Walker. This book had the most emotional impact on me, more then any other book I have ever read. It gives the reader a vivid and terrifying description of the life of a black woman growing up in the early twenty century. I read this book for my eighth grade English class. Everyone was assigned to read an independent reading book that relates and associates with the timeless classic, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Even though the main character in each book was placed in completely different situations, the same issues applied to both. There were both victims of sexism. Both their lives were dominated by men and Celie, in The Color Purple, was abused by them physically and mentally because they wanted to keep her in line and control her to a certain extent that doesn't allow her to think for herself. Scout, in To Kill a Mockingbird, had constant pressure upon her to be the lady society had shaped woman to be. The Color Purple opened up to an experience that many woman faced but was chosen to be ignored by the public. It expressed the harshness of reality and the pain inflicted amongst many woman of a different race during this period of time. The Color Purple takes place in the south and spans thirty years in the life of Celie, a poor southern black woman. Alice Walker portrays the life of an innocent girl who is put through rape, physical abuse, teenage marriage, child birth and emotional abuse. Celie started out as a slave to her own family. Her mother is killed, and Celie and her siblings are raised by their father.Celie goes through the transition of a slave to an individual. Celie is an extremely strong character that overcomes the many years of abuse that was put upon her. The book was conveyed in a style that is unique in its own sense and the use of the Southern English makes the book especially realistic and more like an actual journal. I have felt that it is the most powerful portrayal of a woman and her struggle to survive. This character shows the reader that she is a survivor and your future can't be determined from your past.

Blindness and betrayal are Elizabeth Taylor’s great subjects, and in A View of the Harbour she turns her unsparing gaze on the emotional and sexual politics of a seedy seaside town that’s been left behind by modernity. Tory, recently divorced, depends more and more on the company of her neighbors Robert, a doctor, and Beth, a busy author of melodramatic novels. Prudence, Robert and Beth’s daughter, disapproves of the intimacy that has grown between her parents and Tory and the gossip it has awakened in their little community. As the novel proceeds, Taylor’s view widens to take in a range of characters from bawdy, nosey Mrs. Bracey; to a widowed young proprietor of the local waxworks, Lily Wilson; to the would-be artist Bertram—while the book as a whole offers a beautifully observed and written examination of the fictions around which we construct our lives and manage our losses.

A View of the Harbour (New York Review Books Classics), by Elizabeth Taylor

Review Every one of her books is a treat and this is my favourite, because of its wonderful cast of characters, and because of the deftness with which Taylor's narrative moves between them ... A wonderful writer Sarah Waters Jane Austen, Elizabeth Taylor, Barbara Pym, Elizabeth Bowen - soul-sisters all Anne Tyler A wonderful novelist Jilly Cooper An eye as sharply all-seeing as her prose-style is elegant - even the humdrum becomes astonishing DAILY TELEGRAPH

From the Publisher The war over, retired naval officer Bertram comes to a quiet fishing village intending to paint. Curious, and with that strangely unfortunate capacity to inflict lasting damage while trying instead to do good, he begins delving into every corner of the picturesque backwater. There’s a lot going on beneath the quiet surface: pretty divorcee Tory is painfully involved with the local doctor—who just happens to be married to her best friend, Beth. And Beth continues to churn out successful romantic novels, oblivious to the relationship developing next door. Meanwhile, Lily pins vain hopes on Bertram’s careless kindness. Written with wit and compassion, A View of the Harbour is an enchanting, devastatingly well–observed novel. Elizabeth Taylor, who died in 1975, is the author of such highly praised novels as At Mrs Lippincote’s, Angel, and Blaming.

About the Author Elizabeth Taylor (1912-1975) was born and educated in Reading. On leaving school she worked as a governess & later in a library. She lived much of her married life in the village of Penn, Bucks. In 1984 ANGEL was selected by the Book Marketing Council's 'Best Novels of Our Time'.

123 of 127 people found the following review helpful. "Welcome to the Claremont. I hope you have a strong stomach." By Mary Whipple When Mrs. Palfrey, a genteel, elderly widow, arrives with her possessions at the formerly elegant Claremont Hotel in London, she expects "something quite different." Planning to stay at least a month, possibly permanently, she prefers her independence in this aging London hotel to living in Scotland near her daughter, who prefers to ignore her. A variety of elderly eccentrics call the Claremont home--a ditzy busybody, a haughty observer of the social niceties, a woman who fancies herself an ingénue, and one lone male, an expert on all subjects. The residents put up a good front, but their loneliness and boredom are obvious--no one visits them, they rarely leave the hotel, and nothing in their lives changes very much. When she falls while walking one day, Mrs. Palfrey is rescued by Ludovic Meyer, a struggling young writer. Because of his kindness and her pleasure in his attention, she invites him to dinner, where the residents assume he is her grandson Desmond. Ludo/Desmond is everything that the other residents of the hotel long for--he genuinely cares for Mrs. Palfrey, he listens to her, and he recognizes her value. Having never known a normal family life, Ludo needs Mrs. Palfrey as much as she needs him, and she happily becomes his much-appreciated "grandmother."As the two develop a close relationship, Mrs. Palfrey reminisces about her life, and Ludo, having failed in past relationships, begins to understand what love means, blossoming under her attention. Ludo subsequently takes notes for a story he plans to write about her life and her experiences at the Claremont, where the informal motto is "We Aren't Allowed to Die Here." As time passes and life becomes more complicated for both of them, their relationship is tested.Filled with eccentric characters who respond to aging in different ways, this 1975 novel shows a feisty Mrs. Palfrey challenging convention by reveling in her relationship with Ludo. With an unerring eye for the telling detail and the perfectly revealing comment, the author brings universal themes to vibrant life--the passage of time, the aging process, the compromises we make, and our continuing need to be accepted. The author never resorts to caricature as she makes her wry observations, respecting her characters even when presenting them in sometimes darkly comic scenes. In this unusual and ironic masterpiece, old age is shown as a stage in life, one in which rewards and happiness are more important than the inevitable conclusion. Mary Whipple

Love among the ruins By Jay Dickson In terms of sheer craftsmanship alone this little novel is a masterpiece--there hardly seems to be a word out of place. But what really distinguishes it is its sophisticated and yet almost oblique take on the many varieties of love. Elizabeth Taylor's setting is a small hotel in London which caters not only to visiting tourists but also to a small group of retired middle-class widows and widowers, who are forced to accept the dark back rooms and have little to do as they wait for death but knit and wait for the change of the evening's menu in the dining room. To this sad last stop before the grave comes Laura Palfrey, who (rare for a Taylor novel) is a genuine heroine in her kindness, sensitivity, and refreshing lack of the silliness or malice endemic among so many of the Claremont's other permanent denizens. Neglected by her only relative in the city, a grandson working at the British Museum, Mrs. Palfrey asks a young penniless writer who helps her after a fall one day to pretend to be the grandson in order for her to save face among her hotelmates--and as she learns to love him for his attentions and goodness to her he also begins to revel in her generosity and maternal care. Despite the repeated praise lavished on this book by other writers I held off reading it for a long while because I feared it would be unbearably sad; but while Taylor does not stint on the emptiness and pathos of her retiree characters' lives, she brings humor and an expansive vision of redemption to the book.

The dusk of their days By Semioticghost This is the story of the eponymous heroine living out the dusk of her days in the Claremont Hotel on Cromwell Road in postcolonial London. Her fellow long-term residents are other old people who have fallen on hard times, but remain just about affluent enough to avoid a care home. The novel centres on the interactions between them, trying to keep up appearances and maintaining a stiff upper lip until the end. The loneliness and boundless monotony of their lives forms the backdrop to Mrs. Palfrey's astute and witty observations and we share her thrill in a secret kept from fellow guests: the man she addresses as her grandson is in fact a young writer she met in a chance encounter.Ludo, unlike her real grandson, is a delightful, attentive and interesting young man. He is preparing a novel -"We aren't allowed to die here"- and first draws on their encounters as a form of research, but their friendship grows on the basis of mutual respect and beautiful conversations.I would not have picked this up if it had not been for a personal recommendation and I was delighted by it.

Sylvie can hardly bear to remember how normal her family was two years ago. All of that changed on the night an oncoming vehicle forced their car over the edge of a covered bridge into the river. With horrible swiftness, Sylvie's young son was gone, her husband lost his legs, and she was left with shattering blame and grief.

Eleven-year-old Ruby misses her little brother, too. But she also misses the mother who has become a recluse in their old home while Ruby and her dad try to piece themselves back together. Amid all the uncertainty in her life, Ruby becomes obsessed with bridges, drawing inspiration from the strength and purpose that underlies their grace. During one momentous week, as Hurricane Irene bears down on their small Vermont town and a pregnant teenager with a devastating secret gradually draws Sylvie back into the world, Ruby and her mother will have a chance to span the gap between them again.

The Forever Bridge (Thorndike Press Large Print Clean Reads), by T. Greenwood

Review Outstanding Praise for the novels of T. Greenwood Bodies of Water "A wrenching look at what happens when two people fall in love in the wrong place at the wrong time... Beauty and tragedy at the same time, darkness then light -- those are Greenwood hallmarks. The author now of seven novels, she's terrific with characters, with the multiple textures that make someone seem human on the page. She has some interesting things to say here about memory, and the ending is as moving as anything she's written." - "The San Diego Union Tribune" "Greenwood's sixth novel, a tale of love and loyalty, owes its success to the poetic prose, as well as the compelling chronology she employs... This compassionate, insightful look at hope and redemption is a richly textured portrait. This gem of a story is a good choice for those who enjoy family novels." - "Library Journal" "Greenwood's latest is a beautiful, albeit earth-shattering testament, to survival during an era in which homosexual relationships are nearly forbidden. The prose is beautiful as always, painting a lush portrait of the relationship between Billie and Eva, as well as of 1960s New England."- "RT Book Reviews"" " "Evocative, poignant and precise prose makes this story of love between two simply ordinary women trapped in complicated circumstances way more than the sum of its parts." - "OutSmart"" " "The love story that plays out between the two women--at times tragic, at times beautiful--is rightly taboo for the early-60's setting." - "San Diego Reader"" ""T. Greenwood has created a heart-breaking love story that will resonate in my mind for a very, very long time. Her characters are vibrant and believable in both their love and their cruelty. While it's set in the late 50s and early 60s, there are so many issues that still, sadly, stand today. This is not a typical love story, and it will make you angry, sad, joyous, confused, afraid, misty-eyed and disgusted no matter what side of the issues you identify with. I don't want to tell you more, I want you to read this book and experience the careful reveals that this author writes so very, very well. T. Greenwood just gets better and better with every book." - Jackie Blem, The Tattered Cover Bookstore "Powerfully written, haunting and lyrical, "Bodies of Water" is best when it gives us an unflinching look a time in history that is still mostly painted with idyllic hues, when the fledgling pushback of women against patriarchal values was only just beginning." - LitStack "Deliciously good." - AfterEllen Grace "A story of extreme pain, honesty and true humanity; every tender shard is written with such precision and poetry it is a tale not to be put down until it says so. It would be a great read for the darker months but the writing is so well-crafted any time of year works." - "San Francisco Book Review"" " "T. Greenwood has an uncanny ability to reach into her characters' souls, making them flawed but completely sympathetic. Her latest book "Grace "deals with a family on the verge of collapse. Their secrets and lies build upon one another until there is nothing left but dust. This searing portrait makes this novel an absolute must-read." - SheKnows "A novel with multiple layers -- harrowing, heartfelt and ultimately so realistically human in its terror and beauty that it may haunt you for days after you finish it. San Diego novelist T. Greenwood has another gem here." - "San Diego Union Tribune" "Greenwood's harrowing study of a troubled family on the brink of disaster is exceptionally well observed; her skillful use of imagery and foreshadowing sharpens the focus on the Kennedy's dysfunction and avoidance of communication. Readers who enjoy insightful and sensitive family drama will appreciate discovering Greenwood." - "Library Journal" "Greenwood's latest will have readers wide-eyed in anticipation and near-horror after reading the opening chapter, as they wonder how in the world a father can possibly consider shooting his own son. The multiple perspectives allow us to gain an insight into how the characters view one another. This novel will keep readers rapt until the very end as Greenwood circles back to the opening scene with Kurt and Trevor standing in the snowy field. Shocking and honest, you're likely to never forget this book." - "RT Book Reviews," 4.5 Stars, TOP PICK! Nearer than the Sky "Greenwood is an assured guide through this strange territory; she has a lush, evocative style." - The "New York Times Book Review" "A lyrical investigation into the unreliability and elusiveness of memory centers Greenwood's second novel... The kaleidoscopic heart of the story is rich with evocative details about its heroine's inner life." - "Publishers Weekly" "Compelling... Highly recommended." - "Library Journal" "Doesn't disappoint. A complicated story of love and abuse told with a directness and intensity that packs a lightning charge." - "Booklist" "Greenwood's writing is lyrical and original. There is warmth and even humor and love. Her representation of MSBP is meticulous." - "San Diego Union Tribune" "Deft handling of a difficult and painful subject...compelling." -"Kirkus Reviews" "Potent...Greenwood's clear-eyed prose takes the stuff of tabloid television and lends it humanity." - "San Francisco Chronicle" This Glittering World "Stark, taut, and superbly written, this dark tale brims with glimpses of the Southwest and scenes of violence, gruesome but not gratuitous. This haunting look at a fractured family is certain to please readers of literary suspense." - "Library Journal" (starred) Undressing the Moon "This beautiful story, eloquently told, demands attention." -"Library Journal" (starred review) "A lyrical, delicately affecting tale." -"Publishers Weekly" "Rarely has a writer rendered such highly charged topics...to so wrenching, yet so beautifully understated, an effect... T. Greenwood takes on risky subject matter, handling her volatile topics with admirable restraint... Ultimately more about life than death, "Undressing the Moon" beautifully elucidates the human capacity to maintain grace under unrelenting fire." - "The Los Angeles Times" The Hungry Season "This compelling study of a family in need of rescue is very effective, owing to Greenwood's eloquent, exquisite word artistry and her knack for developing subtle, suspenseful scenes... Greenwood's sensitive and gripping examination of a family in crisis is real, complex, and anything but formulaic." - "Library Journal" (starred review) "A deeply psychological read." - "Publishers Weekly" "Can there be life after tragedy? How do you live with the loss of a child let alone the separation emotionally from all your loved ones? T. Greenwood with beautiful prose poses this question while delving into the psyches of a successful man, his wife, and his son... This is a wonderful story, engaging from the beginning that gets better with every chapter." - "The Washington Times" Two Rivers "Greenwood is a writer of subtle strength, evoking small-town life beautifully while spreading out the map of Harper's life, finding light in the darkest of stories." - "Publishers Weekly" ""A complex tale of guilt, remorse, revenge, and forgiveness... Convincing... Interesting." "- "Library Journal" ""Two Rivers" is reminiscent of Thornton Wilder, with its quiet New England town shadowed by tragedy, and of Sherwood Anderson, with its sense of desperate loneliness and regret... It's to Greenwood's credit that she answers her novel's mysteries in ways that are believable, that make you feel the sadness that informs her characters' lives." - "Bookpage"

Burian-Mohr Sometimes in life, when everything is going fine, suddenly an anvil falls from the sky and changes everything. That's what happened to the Dupont Family. Enroute to parent teacher conferences, the kids safely belted into the car, the signal green, Robert and Sylvie drive their car across the covered bridge and have a head-on collision. The car goes into the water. Seven year old Jess dies. Robert is physically crippled, confined to a wheelchair. Sylvie is emotionally crippled, unable to leave the house or function. And 9-year old Ruby gets to be the adult, the one who copes and tries to keep everyone else on track. The story flashes forward 2 years. Robert has moved in with his brother, and Ruby stays with them because Sylvie is no longer capable of caring for herself, much less her daughter. A storm is coming in, Robert and his brother need to leave the state to assist another brother, and Ruby must stay with her mother.Add to the mix a penniless mute pregnant teenager with mysterious roots to the town, stumbling back "home," ready to deliver her baby, and Ruby's best friend who suddenly abandons her just before they are to complete a vastly important bridge project that they are to research and design.Let's just say Ruby, who already thought she'd had the worst day of her life, is having days that rival it.All that being said, here are the top ten things that are great about T. Greenwood's THE FOREVER BRIDGE.10. It is beautifully written. Greenwood delivers sumptuous descriptions, hair-raising tension, and complex characters. She ties all the book's threads together seamlessly... and there are many to tie together.9. Character, character, character. Each character is unique, shaped by the tragic events in different ways, coping in different ways. The snotty friend is drawn to a T, the pregnant teenager struggling to survive reveals convincing panic, the mother's fears are almost visible.8. Bridges. Did you ever want to learn about bridges? No? Well, you'll learn a lot about them hear and share some of Ruby's wonder and obsession with them.7. Tender memories of the brother who died. Because little brother can be a pain, and Ruby's was, but she is able to summon little moments that hold his image together in her mind.6. There's a family of baby raccoons living on the porch. This is clearly not a family of animal-lovers, but the raccoons capture the fragility of life and Ruby, while struggling to cope with everything else, manages to take time to deal with that.5. The kindness of strangers. Here's a family who once was a vital part of the community, and now is a shattered version of themselves. Yet there are old friends and passing acquaintances who still take the time to try to help.4. The power of the river. It swept away Jess years before. The storm comes and we are reminded of what a formidable foe a river can be.3. Have you ever read a book and found is so layered with perceptions and emotions and thought that you wonder how the writer could possibly have any thoughts left for another book? This one is like that, and T. Greenwood has 8 previous novels.2. Where does one go from the moment the anvil drops? Here is one scenario and it reminds of of the fragility of life and survival.1. Mysterious threads that will keep you wondering until the end.I loved the book and book and am thrilled to have found an author who has 8 previous novels, and clearly has more in her.

Totally Captivated By Jeanie S She was only a marionette, she realized, and Fear her puppeteer.I was totally, completely, utterly and absolutely captivated with this book. The power of words is beautifully displayed in the descriptive portrayal of each of the protagonist. In a poetic prose of grief, fear, and a family struggling to come back together, I felt like I became one with the story and characters.Have you ever had your life take a complete turn, that anything and everything changes? On the way to a school function, Sylvie and her husband along with their two children lives are drastically changed on a bridge. Their youngest son dead and her husband paralyzed. Leaving her family totally broken in fear, mistrust and each alone in their struggle. It has been several years since that fateful night and Syvlie has been isolated from her family, unable to care for anyone much less herself. Sylvie’s daughter Ruby must stay with her while her estranged husband attends to a family emergency. The relationship between mother and daughter is strained. Neither know how relate to each other in all the while needing each other tremendously.Ruby is going thru her own struggles with her best friend that has completely changed overnight. However, Ruby has an obsession, and it is bridges. Her and her best friend Izzy were to enter a contest in building a bridge for school, but with the change in Izzy, Ruby is contemplates doing the contest on her own. Izzy’s abandonment of Ruby and with much time on her hands, she comes across a pregnant runaway that is staying in abandoned shack near her mother’s property. She cannot speak. Who is she? What has brought this stranger to Ruby? All things seem isolated from each other but all very connected in this engaging lovely story of fighting the battles that reign in the mind and hearts of Ruby, Sylvie and the runaway that was lost but found.A special thank you, Kensington Booksand NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I guess I should've seen it coming but I didn't and I love that it caught me off guard!I love the characters.. I love that they are all unique. From Ruby to Slyvie to Nessa..I love the gritiness to her books..it adds a lot of emotion I think.Great story! Another great book by T. Greenwood!

About the Author

Ed Maciorowski is the co-founder and co-owner of BrickPicker.com. He has been a LEGO collector since 1973, when his parents gave him his first set (710 Wrecker with Car). Ed is now an investor as well, with over 6,000 sets in his collection and a current market value well into the six figures. He and his brother, Jeff, got the idea to create the online LEGO price and investing guide after Ed discovered that a 10179 Millennium Falcon set he bought for $399 was selling for $800-$1,200 on eBay two years later. The price for that set is now nearly $4,000. Ed also is a regular contributor in the LEGO-themed magazine, BLOCKS.

Jeff Maciorowski is the co-founder and co-owner of BrickPicker.com. He is a senior website engineer for a $40 million market research company and specializes in multiple web technologies, including Cold Fusion, jQuery, Oracle, and mySQL. Jeff built Brickpicker.com from the ground up and it is now the third busiest LEGO-themed website in the world that attracts over five million visitors annually. The site has been featured in the USA Today and other digital media outlets (BBC.com, Wired.com). Jeff is also the creator of the recently launched BrickClassifeds.com website, a cost-effective secondary LEGO marketplace.

Wonderful book that offers a different perspective at the world of Lego By Tony If you are looking for a book dedicated to specific topics such as minifigures or specific themes, this might not be for you. DK has been publishing those books since 2010. Instead, Jeff and Ed Maciorowski take readers in a wonderful journey exploring iconic Lego sets with summaries, facts, excellent pictures, price values and opinions on popularity of each set. The book also clearly states that like other forms of investing, profits are not guaranteed. Not every Lego set appreciates in value. This book can easily be compared to a stock market investing guide that lists summaries and details on stock value for each S&P 500 company. However, not many investment guides contain such beautiful photography and is well designed. Honestly this book is designed for the coffee table. A hardcover edition would be welcomed. While a Kindle edition is available, it is not identical to the paperback. Some page details are missing in the Kindle edition that would have me recommend the paperback version instead.Disclaimer : This book contains some photographs taken by me. I was not compensated for my photographs or asked to write a review.

If you're a collector or fan of LEGO sets, you'll probably like THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO COLLECTIBLE LEGO SETS; IDENTIFICATION AND PRICE GUIDE. Its only real drawback is that the prices are already out of date, as of the date of publication, and are kind of low (in varying degrees). The book generally limits itself to LEGO sets that were created and released from 2000 and after, but includes a handful of pre-2000 sets (e.g., 8480 Space Shuttle; 6086 Black Knight's Castle). The prices are drawn from eBay auction sales listings--which is an acceptable benchmark source, as far as I'm concerned. However, once a LEGO set is retired (as are most of the sets in this book), the price goes up and up with market demand. Thus no "price guide" can ever keep up, as long as older LEGO sets continue to be popular and desirable. Still, the Price Guide at the end of the book is fascinating, as it analyzes the sets with their calculated ROI% (return on investment percentage from the retail price). The appreciation on the rarest sets can be more than 1000% over the original retail price! The identification portion does NOT go out of date, and is valuable for collectors, sellers, and ordinary fans like myself. The listing for each set states: (1) set number and name; (2) year released; (3) no. of pieces; (4) minifigures; (5) original retail price; (6) current price for a new set; and (7) current price for a used set. There is an illustration showing what the set looks like, and a short text discussing interesting facts about the set (especially facts that may affect its future value as a collectible, such as early retirement that usually affects the rarity). This is the only book I've found that includes the original retail prices for retired sets. The Introduction includes a checklist of things that a novice should look for in selecting LEGO sets for investments. These are (1) rare pieces and minifigures; (2) licensed sets; (3) large sets with 1,000 pieces or more; (4) sets with low price per piece ratios; (5) sets with short production runs; (6) limited edition sets; (7) small sets and polybags, especially seasonal sets; and (8) unique sets. Each of the above checklist items is explained in more detail. There is also a lot of good advice about the drawbacks of purchasing LEGO sets for later resale as collectibles (e.g., the boxes require huge amounts of space). The entries for the sets are organized by the LEGO themes: Ch. 1 Advanced Models; Ch. 2 Architecture; Ch. 3 Batman; Ch. 4 Bionicle; Ch. 5 Castle; Ch. 6 City; Ch. 7 Creator; Ch. 8 Dino; Ch. 9 Friends; Ch. 10 Harry Potter; Ch. 11 Hero Factory; Ch. 12 Ideas/CUUSOO; Ch. 13 Indiana Jones; Ch. 14 Legends of Chima; Ch. 15 The LEGO Movie; Ch. 16 Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit; Ch. 17 Monster Fighters; Ch. 18 Ninjago; Ch. 19 Pirates/Pirates of the Caribbean; Ch. 20 Seasonal; Ch. 21 Space; Ch. 22 Star Wars UCS; Ch. 23 Star Wars Non-UCS; Ch. 24 Superheroes; Ch. 25 Technic; Ch. 26 Trains; Ch. 27 Vintage Pre-2000; Ch. 28 Miscellaneous. The book also contains a Price Guide, Glossary, Bibliography, and Author Biographical Information. This book displays perfectly in the Kindle edition on my iPad. This is a reference book for collectors that is also entertaining for fans like myself. If you're less interested in prices and more interested in looking at the details of the sets themselves, you might want to consider Great LEGO Sets: A Visual History.

The Strange Side of the Tracks, by George Avant

Review This redemptive journey is a tenderly written, playful, yet surprisingly deep story. In this humorous and intriguing tale of a young boy’s forays into family history and first love, author George Avant charms with the savvy workings of a plucky adolescent mind in The Strange Side of the Tracks. The opening sentence—“I slipped a hollow-point bullet into my Remington single shot, .22 rifle and took a deep breath”—opens up Lonnie’s world and captures interest as the adventure begins. The journey is tenderly written, playful, yet surprisingly deep, showing appreciation of nature, history, and elderly relatives who are gateways to the past. Avant’s graceful writing style creates a tone reminiscent of another forthright story of adolescence, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. It’s truly a loss that the book was published posthumously and there will be no more joyous use of language from Avant’s nimble mind. (Felicia Seeburger, ForeWord Reviews)

About the Author

GEORGE LARRY AVANT (December 22, 1950 - November 8, 2012) passed away just

months after signing the publication contract for this, his first and only novel. George

travelled all over the country with his family as a radio broadcaster for thirty years,

often serving in gospel ministry. For many years, he was half of The Light Brothers, a

comedy duo. A writer, humorist, painter, and avid reader, Avant returned late in life

to rural Arkansas, to a small town rich with history and personal memories, where

he was inspired to write this novel. He left behind a daughter and two sons, all of

who helped George bring his work to completion, and assisted editors in preparing

the text for publication.

I found it hard to put down until I finished. The story is set in 1960 in a fictional community of Moro, Arkansas. It has elements of many of the rural towns of the area and it had me guessing which town was the true inspiration for the fictional one (I grew up the in the area). The book was a virtual time machine for myself as some of the incidental aspects of the protagonist's life mirrored my own. The plot kept me guessing until the end. It is well crafted with good character development. Some characters you could almost smell from the descriptive language the author used.

Parkhurst The book starts with a bang and held my interest as the characters developed into people whose concerns, loves, and quirkiness I have seen in life. A very satisfying read for fiction lovers.

Burns Caroline MacAffee gets an unwelcome surprise on her 56th birthday when the powers-that-be decide that she's too old to continue hosting her home improvement show. The network is looking for "younger" and they have a new host in mind: Caroline's 29 year old daughter, Jamie. The network's decision drives a wedge between mother and daughter and the fallout serves as a catalyst for both of them to reevaluate their relationship and the directions their lives are taking.I'm a little torn on this one. Overall I enjoyed it, but I had a few issues (but we'll get to that later). First, let's start with the good stuff:I like Caroline; it's refreshing to have a 50+ female character take on a major role in a novel. The author brings up issues that many women of a certain age can relate to, like being marginalized professionally and learning to negotiate the tricky terrain of mid-life romance. Well done.I thought the author did an interesting job of exploring the complexities of the mother/daughter relationship. To me, Caroline and Jamie's relationship wasn't "close" as much as stifling. It's mentioned several times that Jamie has no friends and doesn't feel the need for any as Caroline is her BFF. I actually thought their post-riff relationship was healthier - adults treating each other as equals. I'd be curious to know how others viewed it.As for the writing itself, Barbara Delinsky has been very successful for a long time, and there's a reason for that: she's a professional and it shows! From the technical things like sentence structure, grammar and dialog to the ability to execute a well thought out storyline, there's little here to quibble about. It's always a pleasure to read smooth and professional writing. Now to Jamie: this is a character that I liked less as the story progressed. The author throws obstacles in her path only to have a white knight swoop in and smooth the way every time. I think 29 year old Jamie acted like a teen-ager, making impulsive (even reckless) decisions and yet there are never any negative consequences. Everything just neatly falls into place almost as if Jamie has a slew of fairy godmothers hovering close by lest she feel any anguish for more than half a day. Sheesh. Finally, the entire story takes place over approx. a two week period, and this truncated time frame made some of the plot seem stilted and unrealistic. Characters simply abandon long-held beliefs basically overnight while others are dismissed as being unable to adapt to change after being given all of 5 days to do so! I just found it odd.In the end I enjoyed this enough to go with a 4 star rating; it was a good read, but I didn't love it. You should probably know that because of the "HGTV"-like theme there are a lot of descriptions of houses and design style. I like that type of thing but I could see where some might find it tedious. There's little (if any) swearing/strong language and some very mild, non-explicit sexual content.

Also, there just was not much going on in terms of plot. It was all talk, talk, talk on every page. And the men in this book were so totally unbelievable. They were all saints and they spoke in terms that no man that I have ever known would talk. On and on and on about their feelings. In fact so did the women.I thought I would enjoy this one since it was based on a family business that had a television show not unlike that of the PBS "This Old House" or the HGTV show "Rehab Addict". However, the book dealt with very little about the family business and was so overloaded with everybody talking about their feelings that I was just bored to tears. However, I persevered and completed it up to the very end where the last few pages dealt with one of the family members dealing with very big issues. And that issue was the making of cole slaw. Yep you got it - cole slaw.I found one discrepancy that the editors missed and these little things bug me when reading. On one page the color and the cut of a woman's blouse was the main focus and that color was brown. A few pages later, the color was navy. It is a small thing but I hate mistakes like this.Save your reading time for much better books. In fact, read one of Delinsky's older books, "A Woman Betrayed". Now that is a good book but not this one.

Always believe in the possibility of love finding its way to you By Mary Gramlich Caroline has the ability to take the worst that comes at her, reformulate her plans, and start again with new ideas better than the ones she thought were well constructed. She survived marriage to a man who traded her in for a younger version, built a career on her own as a carpenter, became a home rebuilding show host, and raised an amazing daughter in Jamie her show co-host and best friend. But change has a cruel way of expressing itself and when the show decides that she is too old to be the face of their home renovation show, Gut It! that was enough. Especially when she feels her daughter was part of the conspiracy to force her out of the picture and conspire to take her place in front of the camera. Feeling deceived by everyone she starts a pity party that extends until a tragic turn of events with her ex-husband and his wife has everyone taking a deep breath and questioning what tomorrow will bring.Jamie thought her career was the driving force in her life along with her fiancé but the show and her job came way before a wedding which was on her to do list not a get done next list. She was the architectural brains behind McAfee Homes, a family business who produced one of a kind quality homes. Being the co-host on the show with her mom had been exciting and pushed her toward new heights but taking over was never a consideration and the fact that her mother believes she was working behind the scenes to boot her out was heartbreaking. Then everything takes a back burner to her half-brother, now orphaned as a result of the tragic death of her father and step mother. Taddy is two years old and needs someone there for him right now, and while she has always adored him mothering him is way out of her comfort zone. But there was no time for a learning curve as she walked out of her father's house as a mother to a child she was responsible for full time from that moment on. The problems became obvious with her lack of experience and a fiancé who wanted no part of this premade family. The holes in their relationship were too big to ignore especially when Jamie finds herself drawn to a single father who seems to flawlessly know how to manage life as a single parent. While Jamie was born responsible Chip had to grow in to it but the man he became over took whatever mistakes his youth had created. Showing Jamie the parenting ropes and trying to help her see the way through the chaos that is single parenting they grow close and realize that what might take other people years to establish they have united in a week. The rift between mother and daughter finds its own balance as Caroline stokes the fires of a flame she never expected to catch fire let alone burn so strong. Dean is a man she has known at McAfee Homes for so long she felt he saw through her not quite so deeply into her soul that they were one in the same. Having carried a torch for her so years, Dean decides it is time to push the envelope and see where his heart mixed with Caroline's can take them, and take them right into an amazing relationship is exactly where he wants to be. So together they explore life as a man who loves dogs and a woman with three alpha cats not quite ready to give up their space to an interloper. Caroline is not feeling so old now!Readers are drawn to the characters, enthralled by the romance, moved by the story, and longing for the story to never end. What a wonderful experience every Barbara Delinsky book is, and this one proves the tradition continues

Coleridge lived in what may safely be called the most momentous period of modern history. In the year following his birth Warren Hastings was appointed first governor-general of India, where he maintained English empire during years of war with rival nations, and where he committed those acts of cruelty and tyranny which called forth the greatest eloquence of the greatest of English orators, in the famous impeachment trial at Westminster, when Coleridge was a sixteen-year-old schoolboy in London.

Free Is Not Always Good By Callipygias I feel silly complaining about something that is free, but I'm going to delete this version from my Kindle and find one with better formatting. This one has a Table of Contents, but it only tells what is included, it won't guide you to anything. The text of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is run together--at least it is not formatted in four-line stanzas as it should be (at the start, anyway), and the line numbers are inserted right into the text, so you read, "The sun came up upon the left, 25 Out of the sea came he!" etc. Worse than any of that are the VERY frequent annotations, which were inserted right into the text, believe it or not, ruining any chance of enjoying the poem's rhythm. One positive would be for the person that enjoys a monstrous introduction; I normally don't, but this one I like. The down-side to a monstrous introduction without an active Table of Contents is that you have to laboriously page your way through it to get to the poems.

I don't know if the paper copies are readable, but the kindle edition is total garbage - the annotations are mixed willy-nilly into the text, making everything except the Introduction completely unreadable. The Table of Contents isn't hotlinked to the rest of the text, making finding any particular item a real pain in the neck.Just skip it.To all authors publishing on Kindle: If you can't do better than this, please just don't bother. This kind of junk conversion shouldn't be in the kindle store at all.

Sad that someone didn't scan properly By shadow22 I like poetry. In fact, I sometimes write poetry:RemembranceThe soldier sleeps – in distant foreign lands,Beneath the ice or shifting desert sands. An airman in the sun-split clouds. The sailor in his watery shroud.Their sacrifice, in time is lost,With scant appreciation of the costLest we forget.Lynn Garrison[9There is a simple, irrefutable fact: Poetry must be set in a manner that is pleasing to the eye, otherwise it does not read well. This Coleridge offering does not please the eye. Poems do not have indented paragraphs.
