Review

“Last Days of the Condor shoots high-caliber, nonstop suspense and action from the first to the last sentence, a page-turning, ultramodern, sexy spy thriller with compelling, multigenerational characters fighting to save themselves and our shadowed American dream. Terrific!” ―Stephen Hunter, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Point of Impact

“Grady is a master of intrigue.” ―John Grisham, international bestselling author of Gray Mountain

“James Grady [is] the king of the modern espionage thriller.” ―George Pelecanos, award-winning writer/producer of The Wire

“Lean, edgy and sassy... Grady is a master of the CIA genre.” ―Kai Bird, Pulitzer Prize winning biographer and historian, author of The Good Spy: The Life and Death of Robert Ames

“Wonderful . . . Reading the novel, I sometimes thought of Orwell's novel, "1984," sometimes of the Dylan song "Desolation Row" . . . A novel that's supremely entertaining and a sad, important look at the United States today.” ―The Washington Post

From the Inside Flap

LOOK IN THE MIRROR: You're nobody. You know pursuing the truth will get you killed. But you refuse to just fade away.

You've been designated an enemy of the largest secret national security apparatus in America's history. All assassins' guns are aimed at you. You run for your life, branded with the code name you made iconic: Condor.

Everyone you care about is a potential target―or your killer. The CIA star young enough to be your daughter―she might shoot you or save you. The savvy political aide who lets love trump the law. The lonely woman forced to become a fugitive because of your romantic dreams. The Middle Eastern child warrior you mentored into a master spy.

Last Days of the Condor is the pulse-pounding saga of America on the edge of a startling spy world revolution. Set in the savage streets and Kafkaesque corridors of Washington, DC, shot through with sex and suspense, with secret agent tradecraft and full-speed action, Last Days of the Condor is a breakneck saga of America's secrets by muckraking investigative reporter and novelist James Grady.?

The Condor should be enjoying a quiet retirement but life as a thriller hero isn't that simple.Homeland Security is keeping an eye on Vin, the heavily medicated man formerly known as Condor, a CIA agent put to pasture with a variety of stress-related mental health diagnoses. Although Vin's keepers see him as a "crazy old burnout," Vin correctly suspects that he's being followed by people who are not known to his keepers. One of the two agents tasked with checking up on Vin, Faye Dozier, believes his concerns have merit. The other doesn't give a hoot (although he uses a more colorful word than hoot).Vin finds himself the object of a rather ingenious plot that plays out during the last three-quarters of the novel. The ultimate mystery -- who is trying to kill Condor? -- is brilliantly and chillingly resolved. Chilling, because what Grady imagines could well be real or could soon become the new reality of "homeland security."Grady writes in an urgent style that wastes no words, yet his characterizations are surprisingly complete. Condor is the central character but Faye is equally important. She carries physical and emotional scars from an incident in which she messed up (which is why she's assigned to low level surveillance of has-been terrorists and crazy old burnouts). As you might expect of a spy, she has trust issues, but her impermissible involvement with a Congressional lawyer is helping her cope with them. Or not.Last Days of the Condor is crafted with the assurance of a veteran writer who is at home with his characters and with the changing world. Grady plays with technology and data in ways that are mind-boggling. Apart from being an excellent action novel with a strong plot, Last Days of the Condor is smart, sophisticated, appropriately cynical, and utterly convincing. Last Days doesn't quite have the depth of the very best espionage novels but it works perfectly as a fast-moving thriller that is spiced with tradecraft. It provides an intelligent view of the intelligence game that is thoroughly entertaining.

Then came the sequel, SHADOW OF THE CONDOR, equally terrific After that, nothing. For various reasons, Mr. Grady decided to drop the five-book series he had planned and went to write other novels. There is a very brief cameo of Condor in MAD DOGS (a cracking thriller all its own), but that was it. I even tracked down a UK imprint of SIX DAYS because it contained the outline for a potential reboot of the film series, CONDOR.NET.Now, at last, James Grady resurrects his most famous character - Ronald Malcolm, aka CONDOR - in a post 9-11 World.Having spent many years in a CIA 'facility' for damaged agents, Condor is released and taken back to Washington, D.C., for reasons never really explained to him. The poor guy is in bad shape mentally and physically, his years of work and then confinement having taken their toll. It isn't long before 'everything old is new again', and Condor is in a fight for his life and the lives of others. The only person he can trust is a female agent young enough to be his daughter, and the crosses and double crosses mount up quickly. Condor is not a super-agent, not even remotely, and he has paid a very heavy price for his loyalty and patriotism to the United States. He is damaged goods of the highest order, and that adds to the tension. What I genuinely enjoyed about this book (aside from the return of Condor) is Mr. Grady skillfully weaves both versions of the character (his in the novels SIX DAYS OF… and SHADOW OF…) and the iconic film version THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR that starred Robert Redford; little Easter Eggs are sprinkled through out referencing the film, creating a blended reality to build a story that is a perhaps a bit too realistic for the times we live in.Mr. Grady has also released a novella NEXT DAYS OF THE CONDOR, a 'prequel' of sorts to the events in this novel. Both are triumphant returns of a character I have personally wondered about and missed for more years than I want to admit.I cannot say enough good things about these two stories. Fast, thoughtful, action-packed, and meditative all at the same time. You'll wonder just how much is fact and how much is fiction, and it will make you pause and think about the people who give their all to protect the rest of us.Highly, HIGHLY, recommended!

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. The Condor's Last Hurrah By plane Possibly the final book about the individual nicknamed The Condor beginning with the 1974 novel "Three Days of the Condor." That book was made into a motion picture starring Robert Redford and concerned a man that worked for the CIA reading books looking for illegal codes or information that should not be in print.Condor is still working reading books when his employers name him as a traitor for releasing information to the enemy and order his death. Condor runs evading the hit men hunting him. On his path to escape the unjust fate that condemns him he allies himself with several people. First, is a woman, young enough to be his daughter who is a CIA agent and who helps him due to not believing that he is guilty of any crime, than a lady who he admired but never approached. Merle, the second lady is dragged into the action when her apartment is taken over by Condor and the young agent to hide in. Finally involved is the man that is supervising the hunt. As with the other books involving Condor action is super fast and carries the reader along at breakneck speed. Grady introduces a factor at the ending which while not absolutely necessary for the story makes for another insight into the world of spycraft. The author has allowed Condor to age and show infirmities and disabilities associated with the period of life he is depicted as being in. This factor makes for a more realistic approach to the descriptions and reactions of the Condor. A good read and one that will keep the reader moving along with the action and conditions described.

By Donya Barkley I felt that this was a pretty simply written book about the basic things you need to always remember to pack in your Bug Out Bag. Obviously a situation has yet to occur where I needed to test whether all of these tips were great, but the writer gave explanations for everything he thought should be including in your B.O.B. All in all, it was easy to read and I think the tips were helpful.

Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen was born on February 24th, 1848 at Alwington, near Kingston, Canada West (now part of Ontario). Home schooled until 13 when his family moved to England, Grant was to become a highly regarded science writer who branched out to a fiction career and became enormously popular. His work helped propel several genres of fiction and whilst his career was short it was enormously productive. Grant’s scientific background enabled him to root much of his work in a plausibility that was denied to others. He had little fear in challenging a society that treated women as second class citizens and creating best sellers from such works. On October 25th 1899 Grant Allen died at his home in Hindhead, Haslemere, Surrey, England. He died just before finishing Hilda Wade. The novel's final episode, which he dictated to his friend, doctor and neighbour Sir Arthur Conan Doyle from his bed appeared under the appropriate title, The Episode of the Dead Man Who Spoke in 1900.

The Woman Who Did, by Grant Allen

Review

“Ruddick’s new edition of The Woman Who Did makes a wonderful addition to Broadview’s growing list of key fin de siècle texts. Placing Grant Allen’s polemical short novel in the context both of his career as a public intellectual and of ongoing debates about sex, marriage, gender, and eugenics, the introduction and selected primary sources help explain the stakes behind the uproar that surrounded the novel’s publication. The supplementary material on marriage debates of the 1880s and 1890s, as well as the selections from initial reviews of the novel, are particularly helpful in this regard. A splendid resource for those interested in the Victorian fin de siècle, and the nineteenth-century Woman Question.” ― Kathy Alexis Psomiades, Duke University

“This meticulously edited reprint of Grant Allen’s notorious 1895 novel is an important and very welcome addition to Broadview Press’s increasingly rich library of once-popular eighteenth- and nineteenth-century texts by women that have, for many years now, languished in archives accessible only to scholars. Nicholas Ruddick’s thoughtful introduction and the appendices―which include contemporary reviews, source materials, excerpts from the Marriage Debate, 1888-1895, and key non-fiction prose writings by Grant Allen―will be invaluable resources.” ― Ann L. Ardis, University of Delaware

From the Back Cover

The controversial subject matter of Grant Allen’s novel, The Woman Who Did, made it a major bestseller in 1895. It tells the story of Herminia Barton, a university-educated New Woman who, because of her belief that marriage oppresses women, refuses to marry her lover even though she shares his bed and bears his child. Her ideals come into disastrous conflict with intensely patriarchal late Victorian England. Indeed, Allen intended his novel to shock readers into a serious exploration of some of the major issues in fin de siècle sexual politics, issues that he himself, in various periodical articles under the rubric of the “Woman Question,” had played a leading role in opening up to public debate.

This Broadview edition contains a critical introduction as well as a rich selection of appendices which include excerpts from Allen’s writings on women, sex, and marriage; contemporary writings on the “Sex Problem”; documents pertaining to the Marriage Debate; contemporary responses to the novel; and excerpts from two parodies of the novel.

The Arrow of Gold: A Novel, by Joseph Conrad

About the Author Joseph Conrad (3 December 1857 – 3 August 1924) was a Polish author who wrote in English after settling in England. He was granted British nationality in 1886, but always considered himself a Pole. Conrad is regarded as one of the greatest novelists in English, though he did not speak the language fluently until he was in his twenties (and always with a marked accent). He wrote stories and novels, often with a nautical setting, that depict trials of the human spirit in the midst of an indifferent universe. He was a master prose stylist who brought a distinctly non-English tragic sensibility into English literature.

By A Customer The Arrow of Gold is a must for Conrad fans, as it is based on one of the most interesting and obscure periods of the Polish-English writer's life. Action happens in the 1870's in Marseilles, France, where a young and naif sailor, back from West Indies, is engaged by a couple of conspirators to smuggle guns and ammunition for the Carlist army, with the idea of putting King Carlos back in the throne of Spain. All this is almost exactly what happened to Conrad, all which is partially narrated in the "Tremolino" chapter of his beatiful book The Mirror of the Sea, as well as in the souvenir book entitled Some Reminiscences. The Arrow of Gold is a book of Conrad's maturity. It was not well received in his time and Conrad himself was not fully happy with it. But it is a deeply moving and funny novel, full of adventures, fascinating ladies, charming crooks, bizarre characters and sharp descritions of places and milieu. All this in a neat prose, now free from the philosophical statements or stylistic refinements that at times burden some of the works of the great Master. In summary, a rather forgotten book by the author of Lord Jim, Nostromo and so many masterpieces, which deserves to be "discovered" by old and new Conrad devotees.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Love is much more than three simple words. By Volvo owner This is, as another reviewer put it, a different Conrad at work. Contrasted to the detached narration of the classic Nostromo or even Marlowe's insightful presence in Lord Jim, Heart of Darkness, and Chance, Conrad delves much deeper into the story here with a protagonist first person narration. And, this tale of first love seems deeply personal. If you ever thought that there is more to love than three simple words, then read this book. Nowhere else, to my knowledge, has Conrad shared so much of his own views on the mystery and power of love. And, he does so with so many beautiful passages. Or, as Henry James described, so many meandering discourses that surround a thought or idea from all angles, but ultimately fails to fully identify it. Whereas in the Rescue Conrad paired a love story with high adventure, the love story here is the main event. Although the protagonist is running guns, such is only recounted in passing. Consequently, the reader is left with a bare view of the romance (at least from the man's perspective), and I think Conrad's ideas on love come across better than in the Rescue. As with that novel and to a lesser extent Conrad's stories A Smile of Fortune and the Planter of Malata, the reader is left wondering why some things cannot seem to be resolved in Conrad's world between two lovers. In Chance, love conquered the circumstances and personalities, so we know Conrad thought it possible, but the Arrow of Gold suggests his opinion that this is the exception and not the rule. And, maybe that is for the best sometimes. Characteristically, the novel is a slow starter, but once you make it through the first hundred pages or so, you'll be drawn into the psychological, romantic adventure. The dialogue is quite dramatic by today's standards, but it never bothered me. Rather, I was struck by the thoughtfully deliberate speech of the characters. The art of conversation, I suspect, is lost on modern generations, with so much entertainment around us all of the time. The themes and message in The Arrow of Gold rank with Conrad's best efforts, though the dramatic presentation is not as sophisticated or groundbreaking as in Nostromo or Lord Jim. So, while it is not Conrad's masterpiece in terms of the novel itself, I found it to be very powerful narrative worthy of more attention than it has received, which hopefully will change now that the Arrow of Gold is back in print.

Conrad began by setting the scene historically nicely picturesque Then on to experience the protagonist's interwoven and delicate relationships feeling as if you were right beside him all the while. Excellent read.

Picture on cover misleading (plus revised review below) By Sheila P ♡♡ You would think that the picture on the cover of a coloring book would be a representation of what's inside. I bought this book because I liked the cover (also on the back cover). I couldn't wait to color those flowers inside that looked like the cover. There was nothing at all like the picture on the cover inside the book. The pictures inside were ok, nothing spectacular (as I expected they would be). I went through the book 3 times thinking I must have missed this cover picture, especially since the beautiful flowers were on the back cover as well.So I'm giving it 3 stars grudgingly because it is a disappointment. That's part of the problem buying from Amazon unless the inside is displayed so that you can see the pictures. I've been burned that way before, I guess I'm slow at learning. When users post pictures, it's the only way to know what you're getting. Otherwise it feels like a bait and switch. I've written to the company who drew this book but it is doubtful their explanation will make me happier as the picture I expected will still not be present in the book. My advice is that unless you like to buy coloring books on blind faith(I hope I learned my lesson), don't buy it until you can see a few pages inside.Update to this review:I contacted the company and received an immediate reply. I am happy to say that response was an example of great customer service. Nick Snels was very interested in my feedback and indicated that they would work to see that future books will more accurately incorporate the cover picture inside and asked me for suggestions. This is unparalleled service!! As a result, I am upping the stars to 4. If this is how this company resolves issues then they really deserve 10 stars (but I still wish I could color the cover photo so I can't give it 5 stars here).

Mystery fiction is one of my favorite genres and this had everything I look for: great plot, interesting characters, and was very well written. I am hoping we will see more of Del, Sophie and Mike in the future.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A fascinating novel By Mason Canyon The past comes flying back to the present bringing secrets, sadness, memories and betrayal in V.R. Barkowski’s captivating debut novel, A TWIST OF HATE.Former homicide inspector turned security consultant Del Miller is surprised that his parents loaned the local museum their painting of the Cézanne. When it turns up missing his mother, who works at the museum, asks for his help in finding the painting. Del refuses insisting the FBI be called in as the painting, smuggled out of Nazi occupied France with Del’s then-infant father, holds great sentimental value, but is also priceless. Before the investigation into the missing painting begins, the museum director is found dead under unusual circumstances. While the director confesses to the theft in a note, the painting remains missing and Del’s father becomes a suspect in the suspicious death.Things continue to get complicated when an allegation is made that Del’s grandfather stole the painting from a Paris gallery during the war. The tension builds when the grandson of the long-deceased gallery owner comes forward to claim the missing painting and is later found dead.Faced with a missing family heirloom, a father suspected of murder and new revelations about his family, Del is determined to find the painting and set things right. Meanwhile, Del is also dealing with personal issues as he tries to take his relationship with his best friend’s ex-wife to the next level. The author blends the past with the present fluently giving readers glimpses of what the people in France endured during the war. Her eye for detail and rich descriptions places the reader alongside those fleeing for their lives during the war, as well as those living in present day San Francisco. The story is gripping and moves at a steady pace. The suspense holds you spellbound as the events and secrets unfold. The emotions of hardship, betrayal, love and friendship come through in waves. The secondary story of Del, his best friend and his best friend’s ex-wife ties in nicely. Though bits of a tragedy involving the three is a tad vague, it doesn’t take away from the story. In fact, the trio’s bond adds depth to the story.A TWIST OF HATE will take you on a roller coaster ride of emotions. The author grabs your attention and doesn’t let go. The story doesn’t leave you when you close the book the final time as the characters become ones you want to know more about.FTC Full Disclosure – A copy of this book was sent to me by the author in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review. The thoughts are completely my own and given honestly and freely.

Barkowski By Star @ The Bibliophilic Book Blog A TWIST OF HATE is a beautiful written story which shows how important history is and how much of an impact it can still have in the modern day. Del Miller’s father was smuggled out of Nazi occupied France and into safety in the United States. The only things Samuel Miller has left of his father are some letters and a priceless Cézanne painting, currently on display at a local museum. Now the painting is missing and bodies are falling in the wake of the disappearance. A TWIST OF HATE shows how one man’s bitterness and hatred can destroy several generations of a family. The characters are well-developed and the way the author evoked the emotions of tragic historical events was astounding. People who enjoy art, mystery, and history will definitely enjoy A TWIST OF HATE.

From the Back Cover

Past, present, and future collide to throw respected forensic anthropologist Bill Brockton's successful, secure life into devastating turmoil in this, the most poignant novel yet in the New York Times bestselling Body Farm mystery series

"Bad guys lie. Bugs always tell you the truth."

Dr. Bill Brockton—founder of the University of Tennessee's macabre Body Farm—is riding high, enjoying professional acclaim and personal contentment. While celebrating his thirtieth wedding anniversary with his loving wife, Kathleen, Brockton recalls how close he once came to losing Kathleen and their son at the hands of a sadistic serial killer named Satterfield. But that was long ago, and in the years since Satterfield's conviction, Brockton's family has grown to include a lovely daughter-in-law and two lively grandsons. His career has flourished, too, as the Body Farm's pioneering research—along with Brockton's forensic expertise—have brought him respect, renown, and high-profile cases.

Now the FBI needs Brockton's help with his highest-profile case ever: identifying the remains of a pilot killed in a fiery plane crash outside San Diego. Are the charred bones indeed those of Richard Janus, a maverick humanitarian whose daring airlifts to international disaster sites made him a celebrity? And was the nighttime crash on a mountainside an accident, or was it suicide—or murder?

But a storm is about to hit Brockton with cataclysmic force. First, he discovers he's landed in the middle of a nasty political battle involving warring feds, secret agendas, a ruthless drug kingpin, and a celebrity whose life was a labyrinth of secrets. Then Brockton's identification of the crash victim is called into question, as is the future of his research facility. Reeling from these shocking blows, he receives a gruesome threat from the killer who nearly murdered the Brocktons more than a decade before. But worse is to come: from his beloved Kathleen—his lodestone and his source of security—Brockton gets the most shocking news of all.

Will the legendary Dr. Bill Brockton be able to weather the onslaught . . . or will it push him beyond his breaking point?

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Good Prequel to the Body Farm Series By Vicky Jefferson Bass’ Body Farm Series is one of my favorite series, so I have really been looking forward to this latest release of Breaking Point. This novel is a prequel to the series and follows in the footsteps from the previously released novel, Cut to the Bone. It begins with Dr. William Brockton, founder of the Body Farm, investigating a plane crash south of San Diego involving a well-known humanitarian, Richard Janus. At first it seemed just a matter of recovering the body and determining the cause of the accident, but as the excavation continued it becomes apparent that something more sinister was taking place. After the excavation, it seemed that Brockton’s contribution to the investigation was complete but then information came about that his findings were wrong and his career and the body farm were on the line. Brockton’s luck turned from bad to worse as a series of events begin to take place that pushes Brockton to the edge of his own sanity.I have mixed feelings about Breaking Point. The first half of the novel focused totally on excavating the crash site which became rather tedious. Unless you really wanted to know all the intricate details in the slow progression of excavating a crime scene, then I think you will find it a bit boring. However, for the second half of the novel, the drama of the story escalates as Brockton must deal with both professional as well as personal hardships and at the same time try to solve a perplexing murder which does make for an exciting read. With the ending, it becomes apparent that the series has come full circle which may give a hint that the next in the series will take off from where The Inquisitor’s Key ended. For those of you that have not read the whole series in order, some aspects of this novel may be confusing. Cut to the Bone followed with Breaking Point are prequels, the rest of the series then takes off with Carved in Bone with the rest of the series ending with The Inquisitor’s Key. So with the exception of a slow start, Breaking Point won’t disappoint particularly if you are a fan of the series.

What is most enjoyable about THE BREAKING POINT and this entire series is how human the characters are By Bookreporter It's hard to believe that we’ve been experiencing Body Farm novels for a decade now. Yes, the very same Body Farm that Patricia Cornwell titled one of her Kay Scarpetta books after --- a fact that is referred to in THE BREAKING POINT. Jefferson Bass, the literary name of tag team authors Jon Jefferson and Dr. Bill Bass, are at the top of their game in this outstanding and emotionally gripping novel. The series predates “Bones” and “CSI,” and includes both real and fictional elements to tell a great story. The protagonist in the series is Dr. Bill Brockton, the famed forensics expert who personally oversees the Body Farm and frequently shares his expertise with every level of law enforcement. The case in THE BREAKING POINT that Brockton is called upon to assist with turns out to be the most daunting of his professional career. The FBI needs him to help identify the charred remains of a fiery plane crash in the low-lying mountains outside of San Diego. What makes this accident particularly interesting is that the pilot was allegedly billionaire philanthropist Richard Janus. Ironically, Brockton and his wife have been donating to Janus' charity for years. Janus is described as a maverick humanitarian well-known for using his fleet of planes for daring airlifts of aid to international disaster sites. There is not much for Brockton to work with outside of some teeth and a nerve-stimulating device that had been implanted in the spine of Janus. They also find the remains of another individual who appeared to be a Mexican immigrant killed by the crash in the act of illegally crossing the border. The teeth are positively identified as belonging to Janus, and the bad news is broken to his wife. However, nothing turns out to be as it appears, and things will backfire on Brockton in a big way. A local FOX reporter breaks the story that the teeth found at the site had been previously extracted, meaning that things may have been set up to look like Janus was a victim of the crash when he actually may still be alive. It is also revealed that the FBI was investigating Janus for alleged dealings with an infamous Mexican drug cartel leader. As Brockton is facing a major blow to his professional credibility, things in his life begin spinning wildly out of control. He receives a death threat, in the form of a box containing the finger of a child, sent by the serial killer who terrorized and nearly murdered his family a few years earlier. A law enforcement colleague of his nearly loses his life when he goes to the prison to confront the killer as a favor to Brockton, only to have his neck slashed by a razor blade. But the worst blow to Brockton is the news that his wife of 30 years, Kathleen, is given a death sentence when she is diagnosed with an aggressive and incurable form of cancer to which she quickly succumbs. Brockton is literally pushed to his breaking point --- emotionally, physically and professionally --- with no sign of things turning around. He compares his situation to the biblical tale of Job, who suffers an endless stream of unbelievable tragedies because he refuses to renounce God.The reader will be right there with Brockton, heart in mouth, as he struggles to overcome his personal tragedies and try to right his life. The first step is to return to San Diego and give another go at the Janus case --- which wrapped up a little too easily for his liking. What is most enjoyable about THE BREAKING POINT and this entire series is how human the characters are. The forensic terminology is spot on, but you never feel like you are being talked over or down to. Brockton is a truly three-dimensional character so well written that it’s impossible not to root for him and feel every bump and bruise right along with him in this hugely rewarding novel.Reviewed by Ray Palen

Mystery and heartbreak rolled into one great read By Phyllida Howe As always, Jefferson Bass (the combined talents of Jon Jefferson and Bill Bass) has created a book well worth reading. This is a prequel, a look back at a dark time in Dr. Brockton's life both from the confusions and mystery around his identification of the remains belonging to a noted humanitarian and the personal darkness and loss within his own life. How Jefferson Bass manage (I now think of them as a partnership) to deal with such often-frightening subjects and yet produce laugh-out-loud humor is amazing, but they succeed. The characters are real, warm human beings. Over the series one has come to care for them deeply, and learning of the earlier days of Brockton's deeply committed marriage and the darkness that impacts it in this book, is a very eye-opening exercise in profoundly human emotion. Love, loss, fear all combine in both the mystery and in the personal lives of the central family and its members. There is richness here - a great mystery coupled with a profound story of love. It is a beautiful journey as well as an exciting tale, and I love it for its many layers exploring the human condition. I also did NOT see the mystery coming much less the conclusion, so from that standpoint alone, it was an excellent story. I will always treasure the deeper and more profound exposition of love and its heartaches. Woven into the mystery without missing a beat, this part of the book - what is the breaking point we all fear - elevates the novel to a very high standard indeed.

Evelyn Underhill was an English Anglo-Catholic writer and pacifist known for her numerous works on religion and spiritual practice, in particular Christian mysticism. She was a prolific author and published over 30 books. Underhill came of age in the Edwardian era, at the turn of the 20th century and like most of her contemporaries had a decided romantic bent. The enormous excitement in those days was mysteriously compounded of the psychic, the psychological, the occult, the mystical, the medieval, the advance of science, the apotheosis of art, the re-discovery of the feminine and an unashamedly sensuous and the most ethereally "spiritual". Anglicanism seemed to her out-of-key with this, her world. She sought the centre of life as she and many of her generation conceived it, not in the state religion, but in experience and the heart. This age of "the soul" was one of those periods when a sudden easing of social taboos brings on a great sense of personal emancipation.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Evelyn Underhill's Essentials of Mysticism By Keran O'Brien A collection of nine essays on mystics from Plotinus (the last great philosopher of antiquity) to Charles Péguy who died in the First World War that was published in 1920. The essays are not consistent, having been written over many years and collected here. She recognizes the importance of Plotinus who had a tremendouns impact on early Christian belief and Christian mysticism over a much greater period of time, through the agency of St. Augustine. Augustine, in turn discovered Plotinus throigh the translation by Victorinus from Plotinus' crabbed Greek into Latin. Like all Christian commentators on Plotinus, who founded NeoPlatonism, she cannot help scolding Plotinus for not being a Christian. It is difficult for her to get all the mystics, from orthodox Jews, the Sufi, the Christains and the NeoPlatonists under one tent, so she is clearly tempted by the "somewhat heretical" teaching of John Erigena that there is a "supersubstantial God " above the Trinity. She has an annoying habit of quoting the writings of her subjects in the original Italian/French/Latin. Despite being somewhat confused and confusing, Underhill's book is important in any attempt to understand the phenomenon of mysticism. Mystical phenomena are, after all, the only experimental evidence we have for the existence of God. It should not be necessary to point out that mysticism, in motu proprio, has nothing to do with "The New Age. "

“Condensed to Flash: World Classics” is a work that brings new life to the old classics. It’s an anthology for people who love concise writing that is intense, entertaining and educational. It’s an anthology that brings you the familiar in a new way. Most classics are far from dry and boring stuff that was left to lie half-forgotten on the dusty back shelves of a school or college library. Still, it’s not a secret that they may lose some of their appeal to busy generations raised with computers and social media. This anthology to the rescue. Although condensed, our stories maintain the essence and allure of the classics while being short, fun, contemporary, engaging, yet deep and witty. Yes, flash literary fiction is even more cool and compelling than zombies, vampires and however many shades of grey are out there. This anthology features variations on the themes of world classics, each condensed to 500 words or fewer. They are not summaries or CliffsNotes, but literary stories that stand on their own. As Jules Verne said, “You are going to visit the land of marvels.” We have a retelling of The Ramayana, The Letters of Abelard and Heloise, The Raven, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Anna Karenina, Coyote and Eagle go to the Land of the Dead, Rumpelstiltskin, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Odyssey, Crime and Punishment, Pygmalion, Metamorphosis, The Frog Prince, Macbeth, Puss in Boots and many more. The 23 stories of this anthology, from famous and yet-to be-famous authors, span the breadth of classic literature in fewer than 10,000 words altogether, while adding new dimensions and just plain fun to the job, and that is a marvel.

Review These updates, re-sizes, re-casts of classics are brilliant and entertaining. It's a great idea for book, and few could bring it off like these two well known flash editors. These aren't just summaries or fractured fairy tales we've seen before, but dazzling literary works. Definitely highly recommended.-- Robert Shapard, editor of the anthology Flash Fiction International******************************************************************* In these flash stories, some of the greatest classic stories of literature--from Macbeth to Rumpelstiltskin to the Frog Prince--have been retold in fractal form, each narrative reduced to its essence by true masters of compression, the 23 flash fiction writers brought together in this volume by the knowing editors, Mark Budman and Susan O'Neill. Surely this will become a valuable teaching text for writing workshops.  -- Katharine Weber, author of True Confections, Triangle, Visiting Richard L. It was published in English by the Jewish Publication Society in 1911 (the original appeared in German in 1892). It had belonged to my mother's deceased brother. I probably read it four or five times before I went off to college, and I have often regretted not taking it with me--my parents wouldn't have minded, but I wanted to "travel light" and did. Many of the essays are fine works of scholarship and interpretation, and all are immensely readable. Finding that this reprint was available was a pleasant surprise, and re-reading "A Jewish King in Poland" (my favorite), "Moses Maimonides", "Heinrich Heine and Judaism," "The Music of the Synagogue" and the rest has been a very rewarding blast from the past. You don't have to be Jewish to love Nathan's hot dogs, or this book, and it is a fine reminder of the very rich cultural life of European Jewry before the war.

Only buy if you already have studied Jewish history By Love the 19th century Worth the price I paid for the Kindle version, this is an old, old book that seems to be a collection of essays and addresses given by this French Jewish intellectual (I think.) I read it while I'm walking on the treadmill and it makes the time go really fast. You have to read it within its historic context. His is the grand old declarative hagiographic, ancestor-worshipping style, before people had to substantiate their knowledge with pesky footnotes and evidence they had done real research. His thesis in many an article is that Jewish values, learning, people, had a great, widespread influence on every positive development of the western world. People who are looking for reasons to hate Jews could really takes this material the wrong way -- whether it was a hundred years ago or today. I am enjoying reading it because, as you know by now, I "love the nineteenth century."
