By InfoHound Digital format only, NO print edition available, and NO download link, so this can only be considered an intentional RIP OFF, otherwise a download link would be included, without it, this book is less useful than newspaper in the outhouse!Seems the author or publisher can’t figure out how it works, they want to sell you pictures of the coloring book, not the actual coloring book.Waste of time rip off, I won’t review the images because there is no point. If it can’t be used, it is a useless waste of time.

“This gripping first novel announces the arrival of a strong, distinct and fully evolved new voice.” – Jennifer Egan, Pulitzer Prize winner, and author of A VISIT FROM THE GOON SQUAD “An amazing new literary voice, Jessica Keener explores the fine-laced network of tangled familial relations in language both bold and intricate. Night Swim is the deeply moving and devastatingly beautiful work of a fearless writer.” – Sara Gruen, New York Times bestselling author of WATER FOR ELEPHANTS “This earnest debut centers on Sarah as she tunnels through new depths of loneliness.” – The New York Times “Keener’s observations perfectly capture a certain kind of 1970s adolescence: the adults who tried too hard, the sudden appearance of a joint when in the presence of older cousins, the way a grownup party could spin from fun to disturbing in a blink. Most exhilaratingly, she taps into the thrilling moments when a girl of 16 can see her future, whether in music or books or a boy’s smile.” – Boston Globe NATIONAL BESTSELLER Sixteen-year-old Sarah Kunitz lives in a posh, suburban world of 1970 Boston. From the outside, her parents’ lifestyle appears enviable – a world defined by cocktail parties, expensive cars, and live-in maids to care for their children – but inside their five-bedroom house, all is not well for the Kunitz family. Coming home from school, Sarah finds her well-dressed, pill-popping mother lying disheveled on their living room couch. At night, to escape their parents’ arguments, Sarah and her oldest brother, Peter, find solace in music, while her two younger brothers retreat to their rooms and imaginary lives. Any vestige of decorum and stability drains away when a family tragedy occurs one terrible winter day. Soon after, their father, a self-absorbed, bombastic professor begins an affair with a younger colleague. Sarah, aggrieved, dives into two summer romances that lead to unforeseen consequences. In a story that will make you laugh and cry, NIGHT SWIM shows how a family, bound by heartache, learns to love again.

Night Swim, by Jessica Keener

From Booklist When her mother is killed in a car accident, Sarah, 16, lives in “a cavity of pain,” and each chapter in this eloquent first novel captures the teen’s anger, guilt, loneliness, and sorrow at her wrenching loss. Part of a Jewish family in a rich 1970s Boston neighborhood, she is not into politics, uninterested in Nixon and Vietnam, not much bothered by the occasional “dirty Jew” slur she hears at school. She likes comics and music and her gorgeous classmate Anthony. What does enrage her is Dad’s relationship with his new girlfriend. Always true to the teen’s viewpoint, the spare prose will hold readers as Sarah fights with her brothers, bonds with the housekeeper, tries to blame her dad for the accident (why did he let Mama drive alone?), and deals with her first sexual relationship. Rooted in personal sorrow, this memorable debut will strike a universal chord with readers: “Life was full of befores and afters.” --Hazel Rochman

Review "This memorable debut will strike a universal chord with readers--" Booklist  _ "Keener's observations perfectly capture a certain kind of 1970s adolescence"--The Boston Globe_"This earnest debut centers on Sarah as she tunnels through new depths of loneliness...moving." --The New York Times_ "Keener's writing is lovely; she manages to build sentences that are both precise and ornate."Jewish Book Council"--a masterfully told tale. The emotional depth of this novel has me constantly recommending it to friends in book clubs." Largehearted Boy_"Keener isn't afraid to tackle controversial topics and meets them head on, with strength and precision in her writing that's not only beautiful, but poetically lyrical--" A Soul Unsung"this one was near perfection...and I very rarely say that. This is an author I will be following." 5 stars, Books Like Breathing "Keener's prose is spectacular, almost poetic. I found myself rereading many of the passages just to experience the beauty of her written word. She gives the reader the gift of a wonderful, honest, coming-of-age story. At just under 300 pages it is not a long read, but one that will resonate." Jenn's BookshelvesNight Swim is a beautifully written coming-of-age story that focuses on the mother-daughter relationship.Book clubs will find a lot to talk about, including parenting, grieving, teen sex, sibling relationships, and the healing power of music." Candace, She Knows.com

From the Author I began writing Night Swim soon after my son was born. Becoming a parent - a mother - for the first time sparked a new creative seed in me. I wanted to delve back into a series of childhood events that haunted me for decades - events that included the suicide of my best friend's mother, the loss of my father's business, my family's sudden plummet in financial status, and the slippery nature of material wealth and how it fails to protect families from emotional uncertainty and darkness. _I wanted to go back to 1970 and create a fictional family to see how the parents and their children would deal with personal and social challenges of the time. How would my protagonist, Sarah, struggle through complex, emotional stuff, even if some of this "stuff" was unsolvable?  _ I created a fictional family - the Kunitz family - so that I could swim freely into these murky undercurrents of emotions that most of us find difficult to face - emotions of discontent, disappointment, grief, loss and failure that burden our past. I also created the Kunitz family as a means to search and recover what buoys us all in our most difficult times - music, talent, faith, friendship, understanding, love, romance - to rediscover what keeps us afloat.  _Currently, I'm finishing a new novel, set in Budapest in the mid 1990s.

Jessica Keener leads us into the deeper waters of the family angst with a raging father and a mother who is but a shadow of herself, barely there, and three younger brothers who survive the inner turmoil through music, books and the fantasy world of a child.Keener doesn't shy away from class issues, race issues, extreme loss and mourning, injustice, anti-Semitism, psychological abuse by the father and Sarah's first teenage experiences with sex.Keener's words are fluid like music, which she quotes throughout the book, as Sarah moves through her familial world trying to understand it. When Sarah's mom dies in what is construed as a passive suicide, the youngest son, Elliot, is the wise soul that Sarah finds consolation in. "In his nine-year-old mind that had matured emotionally beyond the clumsiness of his body, he said that God was like clay and that all things on earth came in different shapes - including mother - and that mother had simply been remolded, but still remained a part of us."Keener is a master at building the narrative slowly and rhythmically. Sarah gains her confidence, her voice and her independence through the beautiful relationships she shares with her brothers, the maids and her parents in this heart wrenching and unforgettable story of the underbelly of a family who appear to have it all from the outside, yet behind those curtains there is a restrained hell breaking loose.Keener rips through to the core of what matters most in life - letting go of the secrets and revealing the truth. Night Swim is a superlative novel and a smooth read. It's one of those books you never want to come to an end.I highly recommend Night Swim to all! Order your copy now! I thought I'd give it a try. It had been a long time since I'd read a book like this. But it frustrated me. The prose was lovely; it was true. Keener has a talent for weaving a unique and evocative phrase. But I feel as if the story and its themes didn't match the depth of her writing skill.Keener drives almost absent-mindedly through this tale of a teenage girl dealing with the grief of her mother's death. That backbone to the story seems to get lost in crushes, drug use, sex, bigotry, and music. Time skips along, huge chunks of life go missing, gulped away as the reader is introduced to a new series of moments that Keener has deemed noteworthy. Don't get me wrong, the author vividly describes all of these experiences with the kind of detail and craft most authors skip out on. But they just seem loose, barely connected by the wisps of grief courting the edges of the story.I felt like the protagonist, Sarah, wasn't going anywhere. And, although I'm sure Sarah felt that way (especially because Keener liked to build paragraphs out of the questions wheeling through Sarah's mind), I didn't want to feel that way as a reader. Meanwhile, as aimless as Sarah seemed, I sometimes felt like Keener was just going through a recipe for "litfic novel." Here were the allusions to pop culture. Here were the repeating symbols (tunnels and funnels came up a lot). Here were the finely-crafted sentences describing the emotional heartbeats of a life-changing moment. After a while I got frustrated and just wanted the book to be over so I could move on to something that might have a few more surprises, a few imperfections, and not feel so contrived.

I felt like anything that could happen did happen. This book tried to wrestle with a lot of issues, but ended up glossing over them. (Almost reminded me of Angry Housewives Eating Bonbons, but thank god not that long!) Also, I did not like the fact that at the beginning of the book, we were introduced to Mickey, but he was never really heard of again. The times when she flashed back to the present was very disruptive and did not, in my mind, do anything for the novel until the end. And the ending itself... very abrupt. I am glad I downloaded this for free.

Tangled Dreams Volume II is a smaller travel size version of the original. It contains all of the original hand drawn pictures, plus a few new ones (27 total). Tangled Dreams is coloring book for all ages. Inside, you'll find hand drawn illustrations that are fun, whimsical, and floral. Some drawings have a lot of detailed patterns, while others are less complex. These Zentangle inspired pieces can be colored with pens, colored pencils, markers, crayons, or any other medium your heart desires. In the back you'll find some blank pages which can be removed to place behind your pages while using markers or pens to protect the page behind. I have found these blank pages especially handing for testing color or using as a blotter page. Each image is printed single-sided and is approximately 5" x 7" which is perfect for cutting out and framing. Coloring is a wonderful way to relieve the stress of the day. So, sit back, relax, grab your favorite coloring mediums and have some fun. You may even find yourself in the same relaxing state of mind that I did while creating these pieces. I hope you enjoy coloring these designs as much as I enjoyed creating them. Most importantly... HAVE FUN!!

I have the full sized version of this book, which I love, so I bought this one to keep in my purse/bag. I really like her style of drawing, and both my 12 year old daughter and I have enjoyed coloring these designs. These are the same images as in the large book, scaled down to fit into the 6 x 9" format, so some of the detail is pretty small. Some images will require fine tip markers for sure, or you'll be sharpening your colored pencils a lot!The paper is the same bright white paper that is in all the Amazon published "Createspace" books. The pages are printed single sided, which is good since some markers will bleed through.

It's smaller than normal, so I can take it in a bag anywhere to color when I travel. Don't let the small size fool you! It's still a great book and some of the designs are quite intricate...all are quite beautiful!

A tale of love, heartbreak, heroism and hope ... and a reminder that, sometimes, it takes destruction for life to correct itself. David Fuller believes he owes his life to a wounded man who got away with murder. The murder of David’s dangerous mother. Now a writer gaining national attention, David looks back on the critical events that moved his path from dark to light and in doing so, he creates not just a new version of history, but a story so much closer to the truth. David’s troubled and callous mother, Renae, dragged him and his brother Matthew back to Avry, Colorado, when they were young boys. She had designs on the family home that her parents were leaving behind. A free place was just the kind of thing Renae kept her radar scanning for. She was angered – though she couldn’t have been surprised – when she learned that her steady younger sister, Lauren, would be taking over the house instead. Renae and her sons subsequently ended up in the worn ranch house of a notorious local man. University cosmologist Harding Campbell stumbled into Avry not long after Renae. He was seeking solace following the death of his beloved wife, Annalee. Harding hoped the small mountain town and its hot springs might help him find it. His wandering led him to a chance entanglement with Renae … and from there to her sons and her beautiful sister. David and Matthew unexpectedly remind wounded Harding of the possibility of life, of possibility incarnate, even as he continues to ache for his cherished Annalee. His growing affection for Lauren only intensifies the experience. He’s been blindsided by tragedy twice now, first in his own childhood and then again by the loss of Annalee. In Avry, he has to decide what he’s willing to do when he actually sees lethal danger coming. Whether he’s willing to stand in the breach … no matter what.

In 1811 a group of American traders built a fort at the mouth of the Columbia River, named Fort Astoria in honor of its financier, John Jacob Astor. Envisioned as the spur of a fur-trading empire, by 1813 the project was a business failure and the fort was surrendered to the British. But in its short life Astoria rendered incalculable benefits to public understanding of the Great Northwest. The exploration of trade routes, the description of various Indian tribes and their customs, and an American claim on the Northwest coast were among many of its legacies. Astor never relinquished his pride in the enterprise and insisted that the West would one day be a dominating factor in national politics. To drive his point home he asked Washington Irving, the country's most renowned and respected author, to transform the papers of Fort Astoria into a unified and readable history. Irving accepted the offer and published Astoria in 1836. From its first appearance--when it was hailed by no less a reviewer than Edgar Allan Poe--to the present day, Astoria has been read as a vivid and fascinating history, comparable indeed to the finest of romances, but rooted in the rough and hardy life of trapping, hunting, and exploration. The text of this edition is approved by the Center for editions of American Authors, Modern Language Association of America.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Now Here's Living History By Roy K. Farber I have read, studied and sometimes breathed this era for 35 years past, and always wondered what this "Astoria" was, mentioned rarely and always with a certain tragic awe. There is reason. Washington Irving wrote this in the 1830's, utilizing original source materials and undoubtedly interviewing some of those who survived this adventure, by sea and overland. The errors of each of these parties, including their splinter groups, are not diminished, instead frequently demonstrating the absence of the military discipline that set other more successful expeditions and trapping brigades a part, only to be bested by a certain Captain Fetterman in 1866 and then by a pompous cavalryman 10 years later. These is real history, but much is lacking, such as maps of the routes the parties and splinter groups took, and discussion of materials and equipage, the how's and why's that we so enjoy, and its ending was a bit abrupt (e.g., did these Astoria-Hawaiians make it back to the Sandwich Islands, or settle in the north, as I've heard occurred with others). But, overall, this is an exciting piece of Americana, of terrible tragedy and outrageous success and hardihood, as amazing as the life & treks of Jedediah Smith and his brigades. Washington Irving's language is quaint, but his wit and perceptions often hilarious. This story may be the antithesis of Lewis & Clark's, but is nonetheless a vital component of the exploration of our west and how the native peoples dealt with the first of the whites. Heartedly recommended!

HistoryPublisher: Echo Library326 PagesFootnotes/Endnotes: A fewSuitable for eReaders: Yes4 StarsWritten circa 1835, this book is, quite literally, living history. Unfortunately, the publisher did not list an original publication date, though they published it in 2007. There are no endnotes, and very few footnotes. My biggest complaints were lack of index (which I think could have been added with modern technology) and no maps, hence 4 stars instead of 5.I bought this book primarily as a reference on the life of Marie and Pierre Dorion, and because of the lack of index, I had to read it all. Hmmm, maybe I'm a little glad there was no index. The book was well written, though one must give patience for some of the wordage (Indian women are 'squaws' if mentioned at all, and all Indians are 'savages,' but such was the vernacular of the day). The descriptions of the trip the Hunt party made from St. Louis to Astoria is spectacular in areas. Their trip covered 3500 miles. As the crow flies today, it is 1800 miles. Mr. Hunt lead a party of trappers across the continent in 1811 for his boss, John Astor. Hunt made several decisions along the trek, costing lives and time.If you are interested in the history of the opening of the Oregon Territories, the mountain men, the fur trappers and hunters, this book reads more like a well-written novel than a history book. It is an exciting book, about exciting people. One would almost think Irving made the trip. The descriptions of the Natives and how they lived are wonderful. The description of how the French Canadians and Mountain Men dressed is delightful. It would be helpful if this book is ever reprinted to have an editor go through it and tell us what the places mentioned are either called today, or where they are located on today's maps. The Great Falls of the Columbia no longer exist, well, that's not quite true, they do exist, they are just covered by Celilo Lake, made when The Dalles Dam flooded the Columbia River. (When I was a girl, they were known as Celilo Falls, and I remember not only the falls, but the Indians fishing from them.)

John Jacob Astor hired Irving to live with him and go through all the journals, letters, and manuscripts that had been collected from the Astoria adventure. The writing voice of Irving is wonderful and gives the reader a true feel for the two journeys, one by land and the other by sea (Tonquin.) At one time this was the required history book in the New York school system. Nice for us in modern time, that it has been reissued. After reading Washington Irving's Astoria, read, modern-day Peter Stark's, Astoria: John Jacob Astor and Thomas Jefferson's Lost Pacific Empire -- A Story of -- Wealth, Ambition, and Survival.

The Mason Theater is elegant, the subject of many longings, dreams, and aspirations. Having those are six people, united by the fact that they all come to see a performance at this theater. Al is a janitor with a connection to the portrait of Samuel Mason, the original owner of the theater, and a sickly mother who he has to take care of. Although he stays in the shadows, he has an incredible eye for directing. Marjorie is the understudy who is plain, to say the least. She can act well, but spends her career in the shadow of Brooke's, and just wants to make herself seem beautiful. When people see Brooke, they have a new standard of beauty. She can't help that she's given things, like this role. No one can dance better than she can, but her acting and singing are something to wince at, causing her to feel insecure at times.... Charlie and Grace live underneath a porch. Charlie loves Grace more than life, and, envisioning a better future for them, had been roped into a poker game in which he gambled everything they had. He keeps trying to make it up to Grace... Grace has tried to forgive Charlie as much as she could, and be the strong one, but she can't help longing for something better, and to be able to express herself Richford is the owner of the theater, a heavyset, wealthy man. He cares about nothing more than the profits involved. Their stories progress, over one day at the Mason Theater.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. great! By James S. Anderson This is a terrific first novella. This young author writes with maturity and wisdom far beyond her years. Early on, Sawoski paints a detailed portrait of The Mason Theater itself, before she introduces us to a cast of characters whose varied lives draw us in and make us eager to learn more about them. Not only does the reader care about these individuals, but the ways in which their lives intersect and intertwine are engaging and totally believable.I am genuinely looking forward to watching Sawoski's evolution as she hones her talents and shares more poignant stories with us.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Debut Novel By mara koppel That the author dedicates her first novel to John Steinbeck and F. Scott Fitzgerald speaks volumes. Her debut work is a welcome change from thefantasy so dear to many of her years. This confident writer sets her story in a theatre, using the drama behind the scenes and on the stage tofull effect. The reader is drawn into a setting beloved since Shakespeare and the American musical theatre tradition…the highs and lows of putting on a show. In this story, the show does go on with grace(actually two, as there is a character named Grace), redemption, human connection. She has taken on the transformative capacity of a creative community. Miss Sawoski has set out on the writers' road early. I hope she stays on it.

The hot and thrilling conclusion to the Body Work Trilogy, following The Masseuse and The Distraction.

Anna Rossi walked away from Alec Flynn to keep her family and friends safe. But she can't protect her heart from him, no matter how hard she tries.... Time has done nothing to quell Anna's need for Alec. She knows that she did the right thing by walking away; the constant media attention that Alec's been getting for testifying against Maxim Stein and Force Enterprises is evidence enough of that. But no matter how many times she warns herself that Alec is dangerous, she just can't stay away - even after her connection to him once again threatens her life....

Alec knows the evidence he has against Max could stop him from hurting anyone ever again. But when it's revealed that Alec stands to inherit everything from Max's loss, his testimony is called into question - and Max could walk free, putting Anna in harm's way once again. Now he's beginning to wonder if any of this is even worth it - and if he and Anna will ever have a chance at true happiness....

By Shayna Renee's Spicy Reads THE CONFESSION by Sierra Kincade was a heart pounding, wildly erotic, fantastic conclusion to a superb trilogy. Anna and Alec are two characters that will forever be embedded in my heart. These two have been through Hell and back and they deserve their happily ever after, and this author delivered it in a beautiful and captivating way. I am forever grateful that I took a chance on this (new to me) author. I would’ve been heartbroken if I missed out on this intriguing love story. In the conclusion of book two in the trilogy, our hearts were broken when Anna walked away from Alec’s dangerous life. She also walked out on the other half of her heart. She gave everything she had to this man, but when he brings danger and complications to her family and friends, sacrifices must be made. Alec was her light, her anchor, her soul. To walk away from all of that breaks something inside of you. Anna was free from Alec, but she was left empty, broken, and alone. Everywhere that Anna looks, she is reminded of the intense passion that they once shared. But how long can you stay away from a love like that? No matter what she tells herself, no matter how much danger she is in, she can’t seem to stay away. But being back in Alec’s arms comes with a price. There is an enemy out there that will do anything to shut Anna and Alec up for good.Receiving this book early has its pros and cons. I missed these characters like crazy. I missed the intense passion that flew off the pages overtime these two are together. Reading this book was bittersweet for me, because I didn’t want it to end. I tried to read slowly and soak up every word, but with such beautiful and steamy scenes and enough suspense to keep me on my toes at all times, I couldn’t do it. I went full steam ahead reading this book, because with every word and every scene it kept getting better and better. This had a wonderful epilogue and a heartwarming ending that will leave you with such hope and contentment.*Gifted copy provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review*

By MANDY SAIAL The Confession by Sierra KincadeMy rating: 5 of 5 starsThe Confession -Sierra Kincade (The Body Works # 3) 5 STARS Anna Rossi has given up the only man she has ever stuck around for , to keep her few friends and family safe from the harm he brought to their relationship .She is losing hope and her heart is breaking more every day she is apart from Alex.Until she decides to stick by and fight for the man she loves ...that is until she finds out he may have moved on already. Can Anna Get Alex back or is she trying to win a losing battle ? I'm so sad to see this trilogy come to an end .I was hesitant to read it .That's why it took me so long to write a review . I enjoyed Alex and Anna's tortured , broken & vulnerable storyline .Thinking how in the hell they were ever going to find happiness again after so many heartaches & Disappointments have surpassed them both on a near daily basis. I love Sierra's writing , she manages to keep you on the edge of your seat. Clenching your teeth with roaring action even thought you are reeling with sorrow from reading the heartache these two characters have to go thought to keep each other close .The Jaw dropping, sensual love scenes , between these two were raw and made your toes curl. I will miss Alex & Anna , but they will live on my bookshelves to reread their tearstained and teeth chattering journey forever.I will be buying every book Sierra writes in the future , she has a loyal fan in me.View all my reviews

She knows that she did the right thing walking away; the constant media attention that Alec’s been getting for testifying against Maxim Stein and Force Enterprises is evidence enough of that. But no matter how many times she warns herself that Alec is dangerous, she just can’t stay away—even after her connection to him once again threatens her life…Alec knows the evidence he has against Max could stop him from hurting anyone ever again. Now he’s beginning to wonder if any of this is even worth it—and if he and Anna will ever have a chance at true happiness…My Review:The Confession is the third book in the Body Works Trilogy. At first the book started off as a reminder of the lesson in accepting the things that aren't good for you but of course we all know that Anna can't walk away from Alec no matter how negatively being with him affects her life. Then comes the reason why so many girls can't walk away from their bad boy. Anna holds onto that while Alec struggles to keep her at arms length in order to protect her from what he's involved in. The bad boy wanting to protect the good girl from being marred by his own shadow. (The only thing I didn't like about the break up part was the whole can't eat, can't sleep without you thing. I would have liked her to be able to be strong even without Alec but when you're that desperately emotionally dependent on someone else to function it has devastating effects on the weaker person.) What enraged me even further still was the in your face rebound Alec pursued just to convince her of all the reasons why he wanted to push her away. (Which I really hated) But the ending eventually brought it all together even with all the drama. Even though I didn't care for all the stuff Alec was doing I could sympathize with why he was doing it even if I didn't agree with it. The Confession is well written and cleverly concluded. Thanks Sierra for a great trilogy. My Rating:4 StarsReviewed By:Krissys Bookshelf Reviewshttp://kkmalott.booklikes.com/

Excellent novel, not-so-good illustrations By reimer@isoa.net The novel is a typical Baum fantasy, that is, carelessly plotted, but filled with wonderful creations (there is more invention in one Baum novel than in a basket of trilogies by any current fantasy writer), and often amusing (the reformation of the thieves is hilarious). As for this particular edition: No one can fault the publisher for being stingy with George O'Connor's illustrations--there are approximately fifty--but that is not necessarily a good thing. O'Connor's work seems crude to me, and he has an annoying tendency to stray from the text--for example, the hero, Prince Marvel, is repeatedly described as "small" and "slight," yet O'Connor consistently depicts someone who could wrestle Superman.

It looks like a printout of an unillustrated web page. To top it off, the author's name is given on the cover as "Frank L. Baum," which showed these people had no idea what they were doing, not to mention it's poorly cut and there are blobs of ink all over the book. I'm going to send it back and exchange it for the Wildside edition. I know their books are good quality, since Phyliis Ann Karr showed me hers from them.

Baum's other magical land By A Customer Baum whisks us to another world, with the androgynous and entrancing Prince Marvel, who pines to become mortal. This is one of Baum's "non-Oz" best! Several parts of the book shine with ingenuity, and only from the pen of Baum could this have come to paper. No other author of children's novels writes like this, and no other author can bring to the world such a magical feast like THE ENCHANTED ISLAND OF YEW. A great recommendation for a young one, or for anyone who desires light-hearted, escapist, high fantasy.

I especially liked the communication between the two primary characters (husband and wife) faced with a threat from a negative entity who might have destroyed everything they had. A good beginning, I'm looking forward to more.

By jm Just in time for Father's Day and lazy summer reading, this new American folktale explodes with cuss and spirit and heart. Follow the legend of Cotton Kingfisher, 'buck wild iron python rider', as he journeys through the mid-century American West with nothing but a rucksack and a fistful of fight. You'll laugh out loud at his sheer bygod spit in your eye audacity, cry at the ghosts of his sad memories, and hope like hell he can find a home and 'make peace with the earth'.Author Caleb Mannan draws from a rich heritage of Americana, writing in the tradition of Faulkner, Steinbeck, Kerouac, and McCarthy. Bust It has more in common with poetry than prose, and begs to be read aloud (with cold beer and fried chicken handy, of course). Can't wait to see who is cast as Cotton Kingfisher in the big-screen adaptation!

Elizabeth and After: A Novel, by Matt Cohen

From Publishers Weekly Winner of Canada's Governor General's Award for Fiction, Cohen's (Last Seen) muted smalltown drama is set in West Gull, Ontario, a farming center and tourist destination on the shores of Long Gull Lake. The eponymous Elizabeth McKelvey, "the woman considered to be the most beautiful, the most mysterious, the most out-of-place in the whole township," is already dead at 51 as the novel opens, but her presence is still felt. She is mourned by her retired, semi-alcoholic husband, William, and her ne'er-do-well son, Carl, who has just returned to town. Adam Goldsmith, accountant to West Gull's unscrupulous leading citizen, Luke Richardson, and "possibly the most colourless man ever to live in West Gull," silently suffers her loss, too; he was Elizabeth's secret lover. As Richardson's political campaign kicks into high gear, Carl tries to find a job in his hometown's depressed economy and reconcile with his ex-wife, Chrissy, and seven-year-old daughter. Carl is tormented with guilt over his mother's death; he was driving his parents home after a party and crashed into a tree. He is also fearful of inheriting the McKelvey family shiftlessnessAneedlessly, it turns out, since Carl is actually Goldsmith's son, although the younger man is unaware of that. It is Chrissy's new boyfriend, Fred Verghoers, Carl's old enemy and Richardson's opponent on the campaign trail, who finally forces Carl to confront his past. The narrative pauses to flash back to Elizabeth's life; perhaps she scrutinized it obsessively ("Was it that she had been too frightened to ruin her life and wished she had?"), but she never suspected the strength of her legacy to the people who would survive her. Though Cohen wraps up his plot lines a little too neatly in another car crash, his empathy and compassion, and his delicate depiction of loss and longing in a closely knit community, haunt his narrative. (Aug.) FYI: After Cohen's untimely death in 1999, Margaret Atwood wrote "An Appreciation" for the Toronto Globe and Mail: "Matt was a consummate writer.... He was very smart, very funny and very intellectually tough." Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Winner of Canada's prestigious Governor-General's Award, this is an incredibly intricate novel about a small town and its people. West Gull is in Ontario but could be anywhere in the world where small towns survive. Protagonist Carl McKelvey, who is reminiscent of Richard Russo's characters, particularly Sam Hall in The Risk Pool, returns to West Gull for reasons seemingly unknown to him and others in town. In West Gull, Carl had left an ex-wife and a daughter, a dead mother, an old father, and a reputation as a violent drunk. Hoping to rebuild his life, he reestablishes contact with his seven-year-old daughter, Lizzie, but finds that the memory of his mother, Elizabeth, who touched everyone in town to some degree and who died in a car crash when Carl was at the wheel, is a strong impediment. Now, Carl must put that memory and guilt to rest before moving on. Cohen's novel is packed with humor, desperation, and romance. Highly recommended for all public and academic libraries.-Patricia Gulian, South Portland, ME Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Set in the Canadian small town of West Gull, Cohen's complex tale dramatizes the aftermath of an auto wreck that killed Elizabeth McKelvey, one of the community's most cherished residents. Over the years, it becomes clear how deeply Elizabeth touched those around her, but it is also revealed that she was not exactly who she seemed to be. William, her cuckolded husband; Carl, her heartbroken son; and Adam, her secret lover, each struggle to recover from the tragedy of her death, and to make peace with one another as best they can. Carl compulsively punishes himself for falling asleep at the wheel while driving his parents home from a New Year's party. William drinks to drown out the guilt he feels for having survived. And Adam wants to recapture his link to his dead lover by building a friendship with Carl, who doesn't know that Adam is his biological father. Cohen narrates through the eyes of several characters, but enigmatic Elizabeth is the focal point in this simultaneously disturbing and enthralling tale. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. An extraordinarily rich novel By Luan Gaines Author Matt Cohen has created a layered novel of characters tangled together in unexpected ways. But the most stunning gift is his phrasing; he renders images as clearly as a photograph..."he took her down onto the sweet cool ground and gave her little explosions and tears of pain"...or "the perfect silence of falling snow".This intimate rendering of the quirky personalities of the inhabitants of West Gull, Ontario, include the gamut of human behavior, from the sociopathic voyeur to the powerless ageing bachelor. Throughout, it is Elizabeth who defines the commonality of life begun with such hope, now left to languish in despair or the comfort of memory. Cohen reaches deep and reminds us that his characters were once young, defined by their hopes and dreams. We know Adam only in the context of his interior life and his awe of Elizabeth. He serves as an example of the complexities within those we love and take for granted, find wanting and toss aside. In Carl McKelvey we find the essence of his mother, Elizabeth. For all his troubles, he retains Elizabeth's authenticity, strength and ability to accurately "read" others. Carl is able to put aside his own pain and frustration in an effort to provide his daughter with the father she deserves. This is an author whose words enrich the life of the reader. He lays out the tapestry of the human experience, making it impossible to dismiss anyone lightly. Covetous, malicious personalities stand beside the foolish, the innocent, the ignorant and the desperate. The landscape of ELIZABETH AND AFTER is a journey into the heart of man, and Cohen is the guide.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Elizabeth and After By David Unger Though Elizabeth and After has a gently-propelled plot and wonderful characterizations, what makes this novel so unique and special, for me, is the crisp and fresh writing. There's nothing labored or falsely "poetic" in the prose. Everything works and this is altogether unusual in contemporary American/Canadian fiction. For this reason, I consider this to be the best novel I've read this year. David Unger

It is a page turner especially from part II when we get to really know Elizabeth. The writing is quite vivid and descriptive, easy to read, it flows. The characters come alive and the author transports you into their world and uncovers their beauty, their passions, their faults and obsessions in such a unique way. I highly recommend this book and am sorry that it is the last one written by Matt Cohen.
