The Pastor's Wife, by Elizabeth Von Arnim

Review Elizabeth von Arnim is a mistress of irony Lisa St Aubin de Teran [von Arnim] was keenly aware of the powerlessness of an intelligent woman in a male-dominated world Kate Saunders A particular kind of witty and well constructed fiction, a sort of sparkling Euclid, which nobody else can touch Rebecca West Worldly, sharp, witty ... Try to write like that, and her gift will seem very enviable and elusive Terence de Vere White

By Noreen O'Connor This is one of Von Arnim's very best novels, full of surprising wit and sometimes caustic criticism of the lonely existence of an intelligent British woman in a turn-of-the-century aristocratic German household. In particular, the childbirth scenes are chilling, and reminiscent of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's The Yellow Wallpaper, though Von Arnim typically treats the topic with more humor. The ending is as brilliant as those of her contemporary Edith Wharton.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Slow at times. Don't give up. By Amazon customer The main character here, a young woman named Ingeborg, was the daughter of a strict and domineering father, a Bishop. She was raised to always follow the proper etiquette of Christian behavior and proper society. She did as she was told and never questioned or disobeyed her father. But sometimes she wanted to be free - at least for a short while - of her father's control and the confinement of her household. So, when it became necessary for her to travel to London for a week to have some dental work done, she was full of anticipation. And when she saw a poster in a shop window advertising a tour leaving for Lucerne for seven days, she impulsively joined it. It changed her life forever. At times, I found the writing here a bit repetitive - a bit drawn out. Halfway through, I almost put it down. But I read elsewhere that I must not miss the last part of the book. They were right. Make sure you finish this book. What begins as just another good book by Von Arnim becomes a brilliant book by it's ending. And do read the introduction (although I prefer to read it after I have read the book). You learn that much of this story mirrors the Author's own life. I couldn't get this story out of my head for days.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The Pastor's Wife By Cristina S Gheorghe Elizabeth von Arnim , known to readers for her Enchanted April which was turned into a delightful movie a few years ago, succeeds in writing a feminist take on a typical Jane Austen situation, dealing with the quintessential career of young women at the end of the 19th century: marriage. In this entertaining novel, the sheltered young daughter of an English country pastor is wooed with extreme speed by a decisive German pastor, gets married against her family's wishes and expectations ( and maybe even her own...), and shortly after her wedding meets a famous and self-centered artist who decides, again without consulting her, to make her his muse and lover. All the men portrayed in Arnim's novel with a subtle and witty brush are revealed to be monuments of selfishness; their lack of attention to their spouses, daughters or lovers reaches absurdity! The young woman's growth into a sharper awareness of her submissive position and her subsequent shaking free of the patriarchal shackles is followed by the readers with satisfaction and approval. This book is an extremely pleasant read.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Mythical, primitive and thrilling. If you love books about shifters, dark fantasy, and steamy sex this book will thrill you! By Bookaholics Reviewer Blood Law by Karin TabkeParanormal Romance -May 3rd, 20114 ½ starsBlood Law is a phenomenal new book in an exhilarating series about Lycans (werewolves).Falon is an orphan down on her luck. Hiding and unaware of her heritage, she is startled when a strange man hunts her down. But she soon finds herself saved by a blond God welding a sword! His name is Rafael.Rafael is an alpha Lycan. He leads a pack that is desperately trying to stay alive. He is puzzled why he would rescue a human female no matter how beautiful she is. But he decides to interrogate her on why a rogue slayer named Viktor would want her. She is a mystery he wants to unravel. However, Falon is injured and as he heals her he forms a healing bond. As a result, Rafael cannot seem to resist her and finds himself marking her as his mate. But the trouble is now that he has mated, his mate will be hunted down.Rafael and his brother Lucien were close brothers who ruled the Vulkasin pack. However, Rafael deliberately killed his brother's supposed `mate' because he knew she was a wolf Slayer in disguise. Sent to infiltrate and kill their Lycan pack. But Lucien loved this woman and cannot forgive Rafael. He believed that she was his mate and invoked the Blood Law, which means a mate for a mate. Lucien vows to kill any mate of Raphael's in retribution.Blood Law is a mythical story filled with rich history that will draw in the reader! This book makes for exciting reading because Lucien's vengeance makes for an unbelievably emotional and tense story. Plus the Slayers are trying to exterminate the Lycans so they are hanging onto existence. The scenes between Rafael and Falon are scorching HOT! But the best thing is the rich history that Karin Tabke has created. I wanted to know everything about their long vendetta with the Slayers. I felt like I was reading a fantasy adventure like Underworld. I was caught up in the brutal survival of their race. Rafael is aggressive and all male. Rafe fears being bonded since he knows it is instant death for his mate. He fights for the need to protect her but also to allow justice be meted, even if it pains him.Mythical, primitive and thrilling. If you love books about shifters, dark fantasy, and steamy sex this book will thrill you!Reviewed by Steph from the Bookaholics Romance Book Club

By Donna The gorgeous cover for Blood Law by Karin Tabke caught my attention awhile back and I thought about reading it then forgot about it until I read the blog post "Controversy" by the author at Murder She Writes. The following declaration from the author decided me:"I knew as I wrote certain scenes some folks may have a problem with it, but I didn't stop to make it palatable for them, I refused to soften the blow. It wasn't going to be a pretty little bunny foo-foo, hippity-hop in the park. No way. This trilogy was pitched as Sons of Anarchy meets Rise of the Lycan. Raw, primal, emotional. Human and nature at its most basic."Just mentioning the Sons of Anarchy and Rise of the Lycan decided me to read Blood Law, and the thought of a book that could combine the elements of two of my favorite shows got me excited. She wasn't exaggerating, she did it. Blood Law makes you feel the desperation of the Lycan race trying to save itself from annihilation and the debauchery found in the Sons of Anarchy is bold in your face. I enjoyed it immensely with a bit of unease mixed in.Blood Law is the first book in the Blood Moon Trilogy and while it's been labeled as a erotic paranormal romance, don't expect the same rules to apply with this book. At all. As matter of fact, prepare yourself for a few rules to be broken.Tabke goes into uncharted territory within paranormal romance, places that some readers will be uncomfortable with, I know was feeling uncomfortable a time or two. But I love when author dares to do something different, but can do it in a way that fascinates me and pushes me think about what I just read, and I don't mind getting outside of my comfort zones. Sometimes I like to be pushed outside those boundaries and shocked, and possibly thrilled. Blood Law accomplished this. The romance between Falon and Rafael, was blazing, tense and raw from the beginning, full of doubt and much stomach tingling excitement. Lucien, Rafael's twin brother, was the constant unknown factor, adding to the intensity of the story and dynamics of the romance as to when he would claim his right to enact the Blood Law. The overall world building was dark, grim, intense and full of many diverse levels that beg to explored. I knew going in to expect the unexpected, and the unexpected is what I got. This book left me guessing until the end as to whether the Blood Law would be enacted on Falon. The ending was so unexpected and explosive. I'm still in shock over it. I'll definitely be picking up the next book in this series.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Blood Law Rocked! By Mahalia Levey Blood Law by Karin Tabke led me into the lives of two complicated lycan packs. The opening of the trilogy gave me the perfect set up to the lay of the law. I found myself mesmerized from beginning to end.Falon the heorine piqued my interest and I quickly became enamored with her quiet strength and grit to live. I found she complimented Rafeal to perfection. Their passionate encounters and explosive emotions set the pages to blazing. While she fought to find out her roots, I rode the roller coaster watching her tiny self go up against the evil in the night. Even through her terror she held tight to the will to live, refusing to be the pawn of two stubborn brothers whose past resulted in the deterioration of their people. At first glance I didn't consider Rafeal the hero, although a strong alpha. His complex personality was peeled away through the story layer by layer showing that perception and circumstance often mislead to finding the true identity of a man. I was wrong...I thouroughly enjoyed every facet of him, once I had him figured out.Lucien's rage tugged at my heart strings, I have to admit, this tortured wolf, vengeful and all is just as complex as his brother and totally misunderstood. Yes, he's an ass but he feels he's been wrongfully done and as any man would want restitution, he feels it's his to exact. The cliffhanger at the end left my mouth agape and brought a tortured sigh from my mouth....impatient and all the wait will be well worth it in the end. I really enjoyed the complex multilayered story filled with betrayal, the thin line between love and hate, personal loyalty and family loyalty, danger, intrigue and spellbinding passion. As this war with the Slayers and Lycans continue I can't wait to read the entire Trilogy and am eagerly awaiting book 2

Told in spare, lovely prose, a fascinating study of identity and deception in the age of social media—what happens when the constructed identities start to take over?

For Jeff Brennan, juggling multiple identities is a way of life. Online he has dozens of different personalities and switches easily between them. Offline, he shows different faces to different people: the caring grandson, the angry ecoprotester, the bored IT consultant. So when the beautiful Marie mistakes him for a famous blogger, he thinks nothing of adding this new identity to his repertoire. But as they fall in love and start building a life together, Jeff is gradually forced into more and more desperate measures to maintain his new identity, and the boundaries between his carefully segregated personas begin to fray. In a world where truth is a matter of perspective and identities are interchangeable, Jeff finds himself trapped in his own web of lies. How far will he go to maintain his secrets? Even if he wanted to turn back, would he be able to?

A Virtual Love, by Andrew Blackman

Review A compelling tale, told from several perspectives, about the identity that people project about themselves in the social media world and the real life identity that we all cannot escape from. A fascinating, modern story that had me gripped. -- Award-winning author Alex Wheatle MBE A compelling and very entertaining look at the complexities of our hyperreal age, an insightful and witty exploration of the disconnect between image and reality, truth and appearance and whether love and sincere sentiment can overcome the short term thrills of social media. -- James Miller 'A Virtual Love by Andrew Blackman is a thoroughly modern novel, much of which takes place online. Its lead character, Jeff, is confident with the different images that he projects on social media and dating websites, and when the beautiful Marie mistakes him online for someone else, he plays along and they fall in love. "We create different versions of ourselves on different sites," says the author, "and reshape or delete them at will." The novel goes as far as to question whether anyone has a "real" identity anymore.' -- Katy Guest The Independent 'Andrew Blackman has written a remarkable novel, A Virtual Love, which explores the differences between actual and virtual personas (masks) in a digital age ... A novel for anyone who loves to be seduced by characters whose desires are in conflict with a reality for which there is no Undo button.' -- Caribbean poet and author Geoffrey Philp 'Andrew Blackman's second novel is a fine study of identity and deception at the point where the online and offline worlds intersect.' -- David Hebblethwaite We Love This Book 'Blackman hits on the performative nature of online interaction and profile building, the task of constructing an idealised version of the self to be displayed to the world, and also questions our willingness to believe.' -- The Workshy Fop 'A Virtual Love by Andrew Blackman is a thoughtful, artistic, entertaining and ultimately sad meditation upon the state of the world in the digital age.' -- US book blog Babbling Books 'Andrew Blackman's second novel looks at the world of online interaction, telling an engaging story while making deeper points about the commodification of identity in the age of social networking.' -- Bloggers Recommend 'An engaging, brilliant story capturing the almost impenetrable emotions and issues cropping up in a fairly new digital age. Blackman has made me take a long, hard look at myself and how I choose to portray myself not only online, but everywhere else too.' -- US book blog The Innocent Flower 'A great touching story exposing the disconnect between generations, human frailty and the underlying love that permeates the whole book.' -- US Blogger Random Thoughts 'The web of lies that each character spins, their inability to say what they really feel make them inhabitants of an imaginary world they can't seem to be able to leave, trapped in their own fantasies.' -- Postcards from Asia

About the Author Andrew Blackman lives in the UK, but previously spent six years in New York as a staff reporter for the Wall Street Journal. His work has also been published in Cincinnati Post, Monthly Review, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Seattle Times, Tampa Tribune, Toronto's Globe and Mail, Post Road, Carillon, Smoke, and in books by Twenty Stories Publishing, Greenacre Writers, and Leaf Books, and he won the 2004 Daniel Singer essay prize.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Case of Mistaken Identity By Helen J Beal Having read and enjoyed Andrew Blackman's first novel, On the Holloway Road, I was very much looking forward to reading this, and was not disappointed. The story is told through multiple points of view, with a clever use of the first/second person as each chapter is told by one of the characters addressing one of the others - and also Marcus' Twitter feed. Social media and the use of technology - Facebook, blogs, hacking - form the spine of the novel and the one, big lie Jeff succumbs from which the very compelling plot hangs. I was a particular fan of Jeff's grandad.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. What's reality got to do with it? By Geoffrey Philp Andrew Blackman has written a remarkable novel, A Virtual Love, which explores the differences between actual and virtual personas (masks) in a digital age. Even as I write this I am aware of the subtleties of these distinctions that the novel also acknowledges while creating layered ironies in the development of the plot. Set in England and narrated from multiple perspectives, A Virtual Love presents a cast of digital natives, who negotiate actual and virtual realities in an attempt to control their increasingly fragmented lives. The main character, Jeff Brennan, who appears to be a dutiful grandson, harbors a secret that threatens to unravel his offline and online identities. In order to gain the attention of a beautiful woman, Marie, he has tricked her into believing that he is THE famous political blogger, Jeff Brennan. As he tries to balance his actual and virtual relationships with Marie and his friends, he draws everyone, include his grandfather in his conspiracy to deceive Marie. You see where this is going, right?Actually, you won't.The moral center of the novel, Arthur Standhope, the main character's grandfather, bristles at his implication in the deception. Eighty years old and grounded in the verities of daily living, Arthur's role as interlocutor highlights his grandson's dilemma.'It's my identity. It's what I show to the world.'Something screamed inside my chest. This is not what identity is formed of, I wanted to say. I wanted to tell you all the things I have learned in my long, long decades on this Earth. I wanted to stop you from making the same mistakes as everyone else. I wanted to help you to be wise instead of clever. I wanted all this, but knew it would never happen. You'd never listen, or if you did you'd never understand. 'That's nice,' I said.A Virtual Love, which I'd only downloaded as a sample to my Kindle reader on Friday night, had me returning to the Amazon s store on Saturday morning to buy the full text I finished reading it late in the afternoon. I am still deconstructing the plot twists and reversals in a novel whose subject has intrigued me since I started blogging eight years ago. But A Virtual Love isn't only for admitted technophiles. It's novel for anyone who loves to be seduced by characters whose desires and this means that they use to fulfill them are in conflict with a reality for which there is no Undo button.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Virtual Reality By Amazon Customer A great touching story exposing the disconnect between generations, human frailty and the underlying love that permeates the whole book. Andrew Blackman captured the grandfather's feelings with such detail, his love and devotion to Daisy, his desire to preserve the truth, the rituals that we perform to maintain balance in this life. The younger generation in contrast seem superficial and out of touch with reality, being so absorbed in living a virtual life, incapable of living in truth, paralyzed with fear and the consequences of their actions. At initial reading,I was under the idea that it was told by several characters, but realized that this is the grandfather's story. Through the internet, he was able to get everyone's version and compile it in a book. Quite an accomplishment for a man in his eighties.

Unsure of his parentage and betrayed in love, Theo Shortcourse is on the run, but saved from despair by his unquenchable spirit. Theo has always been overshadowed by his charismatic nephew, Bain Cross: three years older than him and favourite of Theo's beautiful, manipulative mother, Sparrow. Now Bain is the most powerful figure in the Irish government and Theo is wanted for murder. As he hides from his pursuers in the river delta, Theo thinks back over his life and upbringing in Monument, a story whose tangled themes of blood and tribe, politics, church and law, desire, betrayal, violence and guilt reflect the blasted hopes of modern Ireland. "Astonishing . . . breathtaking . . .It is a long time since I have been so delighted and entranced by a book." - Sunday Independent

Tapes of the River Delta (The Monument series, including The Sea and the Silence, Consequences of the Heart, and Love in One Edition), by Peter Cunningham

From Publishers Weekly Like Robert B. Parker before him (in 1994's All Our Yesterdays), Cunningham slips away from formula fiction (in his case, thrillers like All Risks Mortality, 1988) to deliver a multigenerational saga. Setting his tale in both Ireland and America, Cunningham uses crime, politics and family tragedy to explore the Irish soul. But where the creator of Spenser got mired in blarney, Cunningham manages a marvelously lyrical, powerfully erotic story. Narrator Theo Shortcourse has committed murder. As he hides from his pursuers in an Irish river delta, he thinks back on his life and those of his ancestors. For most of his privileged days, Theo has been haunted by uncertainty about his parentage and by the preference of his mother, Sparrow, for his lifelong nemesis: his nephew Bain, three years older than he and "better at everything." As a young man, Theo loses (through his mother's manipulations) the serving girl with whom he is having his first satisfactory sexual relationship. He then marries Bain's sex-obsessed mistress, Juliet-who later runs away with another man. In time, Theo rises to a powerful government position, only to be seduced by a married British woman. Although he is warned that she is using him to spy on Bain, who has become Ireland's prime minister, Theo refuses to give the woman up-a decision that eventually leads to the crime that sends him on the lam. With the figurative blood of Irish saints and sinners, Cunningham paints a dark and compelling canvas that writhes with incest, betrayal, spiritual and political bankruptcy-and the blasted hopes of 20th-century Ireland. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Cunningham's novel, spanning almost the entire twentieth century, delineates the story of one family against the tumultuous background of Irish history. Theo Shortcourse begins his story when he is in his sixties, having recently escaped from a mental hospital where he was being held for observation for committing murder. Theo grows up believing he is the son of Sparrow Love Shortcourse, who comes from a well-off merchant family, and Pa Shortcourse, a butcher, famous as the hero of the legendary Deilt Ambush. Theo's closest childhood friend, Bain Cross, is the son of his much older sister Mag. Once grown, Bain enters politics, eventually becoming prime minister. Theo finds a job in the Monument Customs and Excise Office, gradually rising to the post of superintendent. Both in their personal and professional lives, Theo's and Bain's paths keep crossing, for they are bound not only by genealogy but also by convoluted politics. There are many mysteries, and the suspense is maintained by a narrative that shifts back and forth in time. This is a skillful production, written in prose that has a trace of Irish lilt. Mary Ellen Quinn

From Kirkus Reviews The knotted history of a modern Irish family is embedded in a quasi-political debut thriller, a combination providing less than stellar results. Sixtyish and desperate, Theo Shortcourse is hiding from the police in the river marshes near his childhood home, recording the brutal chronicle of his life on a tape recorder. Theo describes his rather idyllic childhood on the river with his best friend Pax and his nephew (though they're of the same age) Bain. Theo lives with his mother Sparrow in the grand house built by her father, Sammy Tea, while Bain lives with his drunken mother in a slum with Sparrow's long-estranged husband, Pa Shortcourse. Close as boys, the three choose very different paths in adulthood: Pax, the most moral of the three, joins the Guards while Theo, rejecting work in his father's sausage business, goes into a government post in Customs. Bain takes over Pa Shortcourses's butcher shop and begins grooming himself, with all the cunning wit of a street hustler, for a career in politics. Intermingled with Theo's narrative of these lives is the melodramatic history of his family, a record filled with incest, betrayal, and insanity. Pa Shortcourse, hailed as a hero in the Irish struggle for independence, is exposed as a liar and thief. Sammy Tea, Theo's grandfather, disappeared into a madhouse after impregnating his daughter--resulting in the birth of Sparrow. The three old friends eventually find themselves locked in a lethal conflict. Bain, now prime minister, blackmails Theo to help him pass missiles intended for the IRA through customs. Pax, determined to expose them, is hot on their trail. Though undeniable voyeuristic interest is created in the revelation of Shortcourse family secrets, the political aspect feels tacked on to support a narrative that tends toward the tedious and rambling. -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. As things changed only one thing stayed constant, my favorite books are still Andrew Lang's Fairy books. The Yellow Fairy book is a collection of 48 fairy tales written the way they were supposed to be written. Each tale ranges in length anywhere from a couple of pages up to about 20. The tales are fairly easy reads, but they don't lose any of their appeal. The book also contains several wonderful illustrations. Some of the stories include: The Six Swans, Story of the Emperor's New Clothes, The Crow, The Cat and the Mouse in Partnership, The Three Brothers, The Magic Ring, How to Tell a True Princes, Thumbelina, and more.I would suggest reading this book, I love it!

19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. A bright multicultural selection By Heidi Anne Heiner With tales such as The Blue Mountains, The Cat and the Mouse in Partnership, The Dragon and His Grandmother, Fairer-than-a-Fairy, The Flower Queen's Daughter, The Glass Axe, How To Tell a True Princess, and many others how can anyone not find this book fun to read? Once again, Lang edits a book full of fairy tales from many lands that will entertain children and adults. The black and white illustrations are also superb.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Leaving behind the well-knowns for some incredible complexity By Emily J. Morris What makes this particular volume of Lang's collection remarkable is its collection of quite unknown stories. While we all love "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Cinderella", there is nothing wrong with venturing for more complex stories, and that is what this volume provides.I have not researched these, but I am under the impression that many of these stories were actually "written". I'm not sure how everyone will take that threat to oral folklore, but good fantasy is good fantasy, and I enjoy reading a fairy tale-esque story with extra complexity that still holds the same aura. The illustrations are gorgeous, as usual, and display intricacies that fit the stories superbly.Perhaps a more wild collection, but for that I love it all the more.

By Amazon Customer This is a "must have" book for anyone who has, or works with, a "sensory child"! As a mother of a sensory seeker, these activities are exactly what she needs to stay regulated and balanced. As a special education preschool consultant, I LOVE having this book available to share with teachers and parents- the descriptions of the different sensory systems are easy to understand, and the materials are simple enough to make. To purchase these materials ready made from a sensory catalogue can get quite expensive, so having the ability to make them at home is perfect!

Gailana is the central island of the world; Aurganots, Reminos, Hindarassis, Pelanese, and Free People, different societies with different customs and values, live in it. Gailana is old, with a history rich in events and civilisations. The mother island has undergone important changes in recent decades, including a devastating war from which the Aurganots emerged victorious. Following this war, Aurganot has become a country of wealth, technology, and power, dominating all others. In this modern age, Aurganots value their new found joie de vivre; Pelanese love commerce and business; Reminos are still dedicated to honour and glory in war; Hindarassis continue to care most about their families; and the Free People cherish their freedom above anything else. Among the Free People, a young Levon has set a high and ambitious goal: to seek and find the ultimate meaning of all that humans do. Levon has been on his intellectual quest for years, and the coming days are significant. Paratos, the sage of Gailana, is in the land of the Free People, and Levon is readying to meet him. The young man knows that something life changing will come out from this meeting, only he does not imagine what.In this fictional first part of The Story in Three Parts, John H.T. Francis tells the story of Levon, a young and sincere soul looking for meaning in a changing world. This short novel will take you on a journey through Gailana, shows you its diversity, and brings you close to many of its human aspects. Events will develop fast on the island, and Levon is about to be in the midst of them.

Searching for Meaning in Gailana (The Story in Three Parts Book 1), by John H.T. Francis

From the Back Cover What if all the world around us unfolds in certain ways while we, human beings, constantly tell ourselves different stories about it? What if what we call human understanding is nothing else than stories we make up about some of the world's events, stories that are for the most part either flawed or incomplete? And if that is the case, to what extent do we do so and why do we even do it? What if we have always been living more in our stories than in the real world? These are some of the important questions John H.T. Francis addresses in his new trilogy The Story in Three Parts. Faithful to his multi-disciplinary approach, intricate treatment of the subject, and modular and open style, the author looks at the existential role of the Story to human beings. Each part of this Trilogy highlights the central role of the Story to human meaning and understanding in a different way: simply through a story (Part I); in a theoretic-philosophical way (Part II); and in a practical way (Part III).

About the Author John H.T. Francis is a general thinker and writer. His main interests are in the condition of the modern man, human knowledge, and intellectual and social challenges. The author is universal in his calling and often relies on a multi-discplinary and modular approach, including philosophy, science, history, and social sciences.John H.T. Francis is the author of Reflections on Fundamental Matters: Not for the Satisfied Mind and the trilogy The Story in Three Parts. He is regularly on the move geographically and combines with his writings a career of entrepreneurship, which he hopes will one day yield similar merits in the world of action as in the world of thought. John H.T. Francis has an academic background in science, engineering, business, and economics.

However, this isn't a situation where you are left with a cliffhanger and need the other two to complete the story. Rather, the first book is a story in itself. In Part two there will be a theoretical, or more of a philosophical discussion. A practical approach will surface in part three. For those of you that like to see the human side of the story before getting into the "study" of a topic. This book is definitely the one you want to start with.So many folks these days only think of themselves. What they want and how they can get it. Levon wants to know the meaning of why we are here. We travel on his journey with him. I was provided a free copy of this book in order to read it and write an honest review.

A Futuristic Allegroy By Silver Wolf While I was reading Searching for Meaning in Gailana, I had Dream Messenger playing which is actually meditation music that is airy, fluid, and mystical. It served as fitting background music. The novel is described a trilogy because it happens in three parts rather like three acts. Don’t let the concept of a trilogy overwhelm because it is concise as opposed to being verbose. It tends to be more of a book for every man told by Levon who could be anyone, except, he has a very grand project. Levon wants to find the real meaning of life. There are several layers within the tale just as they are several different cultures. It is easy to draw parallels, although the author doesn’t necessarily tell the reader making this book more literary than genre fiction. Paratos, the wise man Levon idolizes, could easily have been modeled on the Dali Lama. It isn’t too hard to assign names to the country if a person is interested in doing so.Searching For Meaning in Gailana is Orwellian leaning toward satire in some places, then other times, it is a simple allegory that sometimes reads like a case study. In the end, it is an entertaining tale that could spark discussion and thought.

Good Reading By LAS Reviewer This author brings us a well thought out treatise on searching for meaning on Gailana, the central island of the world with several different societies living on it. I think it’s more than a coincidence that Gailana is very similar to Gaia, the Greek personification of Earth. The author takes a look at the role of Story through this small book in three different ways. The first section is about Levon, who is trying to discover the one meaning for everything that people do. In the second portion of the book, the author shares his feeling about Story in in a philosophical way – I have to admit, this was the hardest part of the book for me to grasp my mind around. And, in the final section, we go back to stories and their importance for people. This book, though short in pages, is long on concept. The idea that all of us are connected by Story and of our perceptions of the world is one to think on and ponder about. I believe it will take more than one reading to fully see everything the author is examining.originally posted at long and short reviews

At the close of the Civil War, weary veteran Malcolm Hopeton returns to his home in western New York State to find his wife and hired man missing and his farm in disrepair. A double murder ensues, the repercussions of which ripple through a community with spiritual roots in the Second Great Awakening. Hopeton has gone from the horrors of war to those far worse, and arrayed around him are a host of other people struggling to make sense of his crime. Among them is Enoch Stone, the lawyer for the community, whose spiritual dedication is subverted by his lust for power; August Swarthout, whose wife has left earthly time and whose eye is set on eternity; and a boy who must straddle two worlds as he finds his own truth and strength. Always there is love and the memory of love--as haunting as the American Eden that Jeffrey Lent has so exquisitely rendered in this unforgettable novel.

"A Slant of Light "is a novel of earthly pleasure and deep love, of loss and war, of prophets and followers, of theft and revenge, in an American moment where a seemingly golden age has been shattered. This is Jeffrey Lent on his home ground and at the height of his powers.

Review "Majestic . . . Epic . . . Vital . . . A necessary piece in a uniquely American mosaic." --"The New York Times Book Review "on" In the Fall""" "A richly observed epic, Lent's first novel tackles big questions--the limits of love, the cost of secrets, the pain and rage that are slavery's enduring toll--while spinning a gripping tale. . . . A deeply affecting novel." --"People" on "In the Fall""" "You can hear echoes of Faulkner and Cormac McCarthy in Lent's prose. But the presiding geniuses of this dark novel's painterly, poetic scenes are Robert Frost and the artist Winslow Homer . . . flint-eyed Yankees who never saw a paradise that didn't have a snake." --"Newsweek" on "In the Fall""" "Masterfully create[d] . . . A sincere, honest telling of a man's struggle to mature and embrace a life after years of failing to find peace." --"Rocky Mountain News "on "A Peculiar Grace""" "Shows that [Lent's] talent has staying power. His carefully crafted but hardscrabble prose is like a rutted country road carving out its own literary territory." --"St Louis Post-Dispatch "on "Lost Nation""A somber and breathtaking Hardyesque vision of a little-known American past, Lent's newest epic unfolds with the assured timelessness of a classic . . . Many sentences demand rereading for their sheer beauty, and each love story--some tragic, others newly born--has a poignant emotional charge. Lent offers eloquent insight into what makes his characters tick, yet enough unknowns remain to keep the novel unpredictable through the final pages." --"Booklist" "Another keening, moving novel steeped in American history and the rhythms of country life from Lent . . . His prose is as magnificent as ever, capturing the light in a summer sky or the pain in a bereaved heart with equal clarity and beauty . . . More fine work from a writer who stirs both the head and the heart with powerful grace." --"Kirkus Reviews," starred review "It is a virtue of this lovely book that its pace is unhurried. Lent pays special attention to the matters most important to that particular time and place. For lovers of historical fiction or simply those who appreciate strong writing." --"Library Journal," starred review "A brilliant and powerful narrative. Lent is a premier stylist in the current American novel." --Jim Harrison "Wonderfully entertaining, deeply moving, beautifully written . . . In my estimation, Jeffrey Lent is our most American writer since Mark Twain and one of the two of three best novelists of our time." --Howard Frank Mosher "Jeffrey Lent has done for Western New York what Faulkner did for North Mississippi: render a time and landscape with such fidelity that story and place are inextricably bound. "A Slant of Light "is a marvelous book by one of America's very best novelists." --Ron Rash

Sometimes his sentences are long and I find I have to reread them . At some point, the writing just flows but I stop and reread not because the sentence is a little long to grasp but because I choose to - the descriptions are perfection . I just have to include a couple of the them here so you know what I mean about his gorgeous language."The corn was high, pressing toward the roadsides, the oats nearly ripe, the slender stalks with their fragile seed casings bending with the slightest of breezes, the fields the color and tone of doeskin, the wheat sturdier, a sharper yellow, the tight hard bundles of seed topping the stalks like many sided arrows.""The porch looked east, so they sat in shade, the house behind , the barn downhill from them and the road a step up the ridge westward, a track parallel both to the ridgetop and the valley below. The sun was burning huge into the ridgetop trees and above a small string of clouds held motionless with red bellies, darkening above . To the east but high overhead a gibbous moon loomed. Past that the evening star, a hole poked toward heaven ."The history of the times just after the civil war in upstate NY is depicted , not just through the events themselves but through the lives of his characters . The settling and the building of farms , the very hard life of farming , the role of religion and the impact on families of all of these things are a part of this story. This novel is mostly about good people and the losses they have suffered - loved ones , homes and parts of themselves and it's also about love and what it means to be moral regardless of the religion .There also are bad and evil men and some amazingly strong women. The novel centers around Malcolm Hopeton , a good man pushed over the edge to violence when he returns home from the war and finds that most of what he owned and his wife have been taken from him by Amos Wheeler , the man Hopeton has mistakenly left in charge of his farm . Harlan Davis , a loyal , hardworking 16 year old boy , an orphan who is wise for his age wants to save the man he worked for and who he knows to be a good man . Then there is theless than moral , Enoch Stone who wants to help free Hopeton for his own purposes . August Swartout , stands in contrast to Stone as a man wanting to do the right thing for Harlan and his sister Becca. We come to know so much about these characters and their pasts are revealed in narratives that are interspersed with the present. I loved that their stories were melded together sometimes in the same chapter without any line of separation other than a new paragraph. It gave me the sense of how connected their lives were.I was drawn in also because of the place - upstate NY just near the town of Jerusalem in Yates County which is just over an hour drive away from where I live . I loved The mention of places that I know - Canandaigua Lake , Seneca Lake , Elmira , Lake Ontario . But it could have taken place anywhere and I still would have loved it. Lent is a skilled storyteller , recording the pulse of the time of which he writes and a view of what it means to be human that is relevant both then and now . He is one of my favorite authors and I definitely recommend this novel as well as his others .A big thank you to Bloomsbury USA and NetGalley for this advanced copy .

Powerful Storytelling, Incantatory Language By Alec Hastings When I finished A Slant of Light, I felt like I do when I have walked in the high peaks of New Hampshire, above the trees where the landscape is mystical and brings thoughts of eternity. For days afterward the clouds and crags jump unbidden to mind. As I write this review, I know the incantatory language in A Slant of Light will resonate inside me for a good while. It cast a spell over me from the first page to the last. I know of only one other writer who has created this kind of language, a language lyrical, ancestral, wonderfully archaic, and rooted in a past landscape, in an America vanished in the smoke and fire of railroads, engines, and electricity. That other writer is Cormac McCarthy in All the Pretty Horses (and probably in the rest of his Border trilogy which I look forward to reading). I could add Matthiessen's Shadow Country, too. But language is not enough to make a great novel. There must be story and character and meaning as well. A Slant of Light has all these in spades. Lent skillfully juggles the stories of tragically cursed Malcolm Hopeton and Bethany Schofield Hopeton, vicious thief Amos Wheeler, deeply moral August Swartout, loyal and hardworking Becca Davis, the brave young Harlan Davis, and the unlucky but unsinkable Alice Ann Labidee. By the end of the novel we know all these characters intimately. Their stories issue from the double murder that begins the novel, and they touch on tragedy, love, loyalty, death, time, God, courage, and morality--in other words, almost everything. As with the Emily Dickinson poem for which (I assume) it is named, the meaning of A Slant of Light is not to be summed in abstractions, however. Its meaning will be found in the heart of the individual reader and will only be parsed as the reader plumbs and delves over time. This is not a book the average reader will page through quickly. The language is rich and can only be appreciated if read with the same care the author used in writing it. But oh my goodness what reward! It transported me to the horse-and-buggy world of my great-grandparents and beyond to something not of place or time but of the heart and what the heart knows but needs reminding of.

I have been a fan of Jeffrey Lent’s writing since ‘In the Fall’ and have savored everything in between. Slant of Light lived up to my high expectations. This author has a way of creating worlds and characters that linger with you long after you close the cover. The close of the civil war sets the backdrop for this story. An orphaned boy struggles to find his voice and communicate the truth, but who is initially overwhelmed by the politics and world outside of the simple life he knows. However, Harlan’s life is charmed, as strong positive presences seem to enter his life at his most vulnerable moments. This story focuses on two different, but very principled men, each playing a major role as Harlan navigates to make right a perceived injustice. One man steps in to offer shelter and gentle guidance, the other in prison for a double murder. It takes a few pages to fall into the rhythm of the language, but once you do, you are spiraled back in time. The story gently unfolds and wraps you up in it.Although the main story concludes, we have learned so much and come to care about so many of the characters in the story, I am hoping that there is a follow up book to A Slant of Light. This is also a story about a community, and although I was satisfied to know so much about the several of the main characters, I was still intrigued to understand how the events of the murder and trial impacted the town. Please give us more!I am grateful to the author for continuing to put out such high quality historical fiction, well researched and beautifully told. Long before Kindle, I was busy highlighting passages and brilliant insights in his books. This is a book that I already look forward to savoring again.

Illustrated with 10 images. The contents of this, as of the other volumes in the series, have been drawn from Schopenhauer's Parerga, and amongst the various subjects dealt with in that famous collection of essays, Literature holds an important place. Nor can Schopenhauer's opinions fail to be of special value when he treats of literary form and method. For, quite apart from his philosophical pretensions, he claims recognition as a great writer; he is, indeed, one of the best of the few really excellent prose-writers of whom Germany can boast. While he is thus particularly qualified to speak of Literature as an Art, he has also something to say upon those influences which, outside of his own merits, contribute so much to an author's success, and are so often undervalued when he obtains immediate popularity. Schopenhauer's own sore experiences in the matter of reputation lend an interest to his remarks upon that subject, although it is too much to ask of human nature that he should approach it in any dispassionate spirit.

From the Publisher

From the Back Cover The great pessimist who believed in the best and expected the worst from writers here applies his caustic wit to literature and the literary scene. Schopenhauer's piercing analyses of style, critics, literary values, learning, and genius make this volume a handbook on writing―illuminated by the author's own shining, powerful style. The best way to discover the finest qualities of style and to form a theory of writing, he advises, is not to follow a trendy mannerism, but to study the ways in which great authors executed their best work. Schopenhauer provides excellent examples for aspiring writers in this collection of essays from his celebrated work Parerga. Translated by T. Bailey Saunders.

About the Author Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) elabore dans sa jeunesse un systeme philosophique dont il explore les consequences dans le domaine de la morale et de la religion. Il passe l essentiel de sa vie a son discours.
