From the bestselling author of Latitudes of Melt and An Audience of Chairs: The Birthday Lunch is the story of one pivotal week in the life of a family facing a tragic loss, rich with dramatic tension and beautifully rendered.   Free-spirited Lily has always played the peacemaker between her fierce, doting sister, Laverne, and her own loving, garrulous husband, Hal, as they competed for her attention. The competition has only grown worse since the three of them moved into a large house in the town of Sussex, New Brunswick. On Lily’s 58th birthday, a steamy day in late June, Laverne feels she has bested Hal by winning her sister’s company for a gourmet lunch, but it becomes a bitter and short-lived victory when the day’s events take an unexpected and tragic turn.             In The Birthday Lunch, Joan Clark explores the different ways each member of Lily's family confronts her shocking death: Hal's open sorrow, her daughter Claudia's reappraisal of her own life, her son Matt's determination to assign blame. And unforgettably, Laverne's eccentricity and isolation, her intensifying conflict with Hal, illuminates the brutal territory of accusation and regret. Compassionate and engrossing with a powerful sense of place, The Birthday Lunch is an extraordinary new novel from one of our most gifted storytellers.

The Birthday Lunch, by Joan Clark

Review “A richly detailed, enthralling account of a family struggling in the aftermath of a woman’s sudden death.  Clark grabs you with a powerful opening sentence then takes you on a weeklong journey through grief, regrets, recrimination and betrayal. It’s a surprising and beautiful ballad of loss that begs us to question our grasp on this world, and on each other.” —Lori Lansens, author of The Mountain Story   “Utterly absorbed, I read The Birthday Lunch in two sittings. With measured steps, Joan Clark leads us into the heart of tragedy, exposing its stunning swiftness and pain-layered aftermath. This beautiful, wise novel delineates place—1980s Sussex, New Brunswick, with its lilacs, morning mists, church bells—and character, a family stunned by death. Grief, love, accusation: Clark is unflinching in her examination of tragedy’s bewildering effects, and how, in the summer days that follow devastation, a family comes together in its new pattern and finds a bittersweet equilibrium. Unforgettably, The Birthday Lunch renders the mundane brilliance of shock—a new way to see the world.” —Beth Powning, author of A Measure of Light   “Clark’s writing is deliciously precise and the book quietly explosive.” —Emma Healey, author of Elizabeth Is Missing

About the Author JOAN CLARK is the award-winning author of 16 books, including The Victory of Geraldine Gull (finalist for the Governor General's Literary Award for Fiction); Eiriksdottir: A Tale of Dreams and Luck; Latitudes of Melt (a New York Times Notable Book); and An Audience of Chairs (winner of the Winterset Award), as well as two short-story collections and several novels for young adults. She received the Marian Engel Award from the Writers’ Trust of Canada for her body of work in 1991, and was inducted into the Order of Canada in 2010. Born and raised in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, she now lives in St. John's, Newfoundland.

As from a temple service, tall and dignified, with slow pace, each a queen, the sixteen matrons from the temple of Hera pass before the curtain--a dark purple hung between Ionic columns--of the porch or open hall of a palace. Their hair is bound as the marble hair of the temple Hera. Each wears a crown or diadem of gold.

The writing is derivative of Keats and the Romantics at their gushingest. The classical references and dramatic monologues of mythical figures do nothing new. And every poet should be allowed only one "ah" and one "O" in their careers. H.D. uses up a century's worth here.

A Tiny Gem By Amazon Customer Author Matthew Haynes lifts the veil of a small town on a Friday night and allows us to be part of the interior lives and habitats of five of its residents. The characters are immensely likable, but uniquely flawed. I wanted to spend more time with them, perhaps in a novel focusing on the month of December. (I hope Haynes reads his reviews [hint].) I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys being immersed in the lives of seemingly and often deceptively ordinary people.

Ojo the Unlucky is a Munchkin boy who, devoted to life with his uncle Unc Nunkie in the wilderness but on the verge of starvation, goes to see a neighboring "magician" and old friend of Unc, Dr. Pipt. While there they see a demonstration of the Pipt-made Powder of Life, which animates any object it touches. Unc Nunkie and Dr. Pipt's wife are also the sufferers of the consequences of another of the Doctor's inventions, the Liquid of Petrifaction, which turns them into solid marble statues. The remainder of this book is Ojo's quest through Oz to collect the five components of an antidote to the Liquid: a six-leaved clover found only in the Emerald City, three hairs from the tip of a Woozy's tail, a gill (a quarter of a pint) of water from a dark well (one that remains untouched by natural light), a drop of oil from a live man's body, and the left wing of a yellow butterfly. With the help of the patchwork girl Scraps, Bungle the Glass Cat (another of Dr. Pipt's creations), the Woozy, Dorothy, the Shaggy Man, and the Scarecrow, Ojo gathers all of these supplies but the left wing – the Tin Woodman, who rules the yellow Winkie Country, which is the only place where yellow butterflies grow, will not allow any living thing to be killed, even to save another's life. The party returns to the Emerald City, where the Wizard of Oz (one of the few allowed to lawfully practice magic in Oz) uses his own magic to restore Unc Nunkie and Dr. Pipt's wife. The story is also a growth process for Ojo; he learns that luck is not a matter of who you are or what you have, but what you do; he is renamed "Ojo the Lucky," and so he appears in the following Oz books.

35 of 38 people found the following review helpful. Whee! But There's A Gaudy Dame! By The Wingchair Critic 'The Patchwork Girl Of Oz' is Baum's most fluid, well rounded, and detailed children's novel.Recognizing the increasing danger from lands beyond, at the end of 1910's 'The Emerald City Of Oz,' child ruler Ozma and sorceress Glinda decided to magically close Oz off from the outside world forever. In reality, Baum was tired of Oz and wanted to develop other ideas and projects. But hounded by young fans to provide more stories of the utopist fairyland, in 1913 Baum again took up his pen as Royal Historian.Explaining to readers that he had begun receiving new tales from the Shaggy Man via a wireless telegraph in Oz, the fruit of this partnership was 'The Patchwork Girl Of Oz,' probably the general favorite of Baum's novels among dedicated Oz enthusiasts. In fact, 'The Patchwork Girl Of Oz' is the book appreciated even by those who dislike the Oz series as a whole. In poetry-spouting Scraps the Patchwork Girl, Baum introduced a vibrant, riveting figure to his fairyland, one equal to earlier classic creations the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, Jack Pumpkinhead, the Wooglebug, and the Gnome King.Rowdy, grotesque Scraps was perhaps Baum's last great character; indefatigable and indomitable, Scraps was also Baum's most original and fully realized female character, whether human, fairy, sorceress, or otherwise.A winning combination of common sense and nonsense, Scraps, a kind of nightmare version of Raggedy Ann, is pleasantly naive, utterly free, tactless, curious, and enthusiastic about all facets of life, including romance.Though stuffed with cotton, Scraps finds the straw-packed Scarecrow a perfect dreamboat, and finds twig-bodied Jack Pumpkinhead attractive as well. John R. Neill's illustrations of the Scraps and the Scarecrow's 'hearts aflutter' first meeting is hilarious.A reconfiguration of the happy peasant figure who blissfully notices that the emperor is naked and doesn't hesitate to say so, Scraps, though not an outright trickster figure, approaches trickster status.Unlike some of the other titles in the series that have a predominantly sketchy narrative, 'The Patchwork Girl Of Oz' is composed of enthusiastic, rollicking prose that allows the reader to happily suspend disbelief. All Oz titles have filler chapters that pad the books and add little to their forward motion, and the Patchwork Girl Of Oz has its share. However, the filler chapters here--'The Troublesome Phonograph' and 'The Foolish Owl and the Wise Donkey'--don't irritate or distract from the story's forward motion as much as they might.Far from being finished with Oz, in 1913 Baum was still working out the magical laws that would govern his fairyland kingdom; readers will note that those laws applied here differ somewhat from those provided in 1918's 'The Tin Woodman Of Oz.'Most noticeably, young Ojo the Unlucky is described as a growing boy; in the later books, all characters would be permanently fixed in their ages and physical growth or decline would become impossible (which of course raises the question of who each citizen of Oz came into being in the first place).'The Patchwork Girl Of Oz' is almost free of the occasionally unsettling, cruel, or bizarre elements that Baum unconsciously allowed to mar his books; there is a brief explanation of how "meat" beings, if chopped into pieces, would continue to live, if not thrive, in their newly minced state.Unlike some of the other books in the series, the natural world in 'The Patchwork Girl Of Oz' is lushly underscored and doesn't seem to be a brittle facsimile of the natural world known to readers. There is a loving description of Jack Pumpkinhead's pumpkin patch home, of the Munchkin gardens of "blue flowers, blue cabbages, blue carrots, and blue lettuce," and a defense of country living by the itinerant Shaggy Man.A classic of children's literature, 'The Patchwork Girl Of Oz' is Baum's best, and a far better book than its more famous antecedent, 'The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz.'

Yes this book does describe the origins of Scraps, the patchwork girl, who goes on to become a regular fixture in future Oz stories. However she is, in fact, a secondary character in the story. The main character is Ojo "the unlucky," a Munchkin boy who embarks on a quest to save his beloved uncle who has been accidentally turned into a marble statue. This book offers the usual assortment of pleasantly odd characters, strange magical happenings and dramtic tension that go into all of the good Oz novels. What makes "Patchwork Girl..." stand out is its reltively mature subplot of the importance of rules. Ozma has made it illegal for most people to use magic. The crooked magician ignores this rule, and as an indirect result two innocent people are turned into marble. One of the items Ojo must get for his quest is illegal to gather. He doesn't want to break the law, but restoring his uncle is the most important thing to him, so he justifies it to himself. Then, the reader is introduced to the humane way Oz deals with people who break the rules. This theme will speak volumes to any child who has chaffed under the rules of an adult, but secretly acknowledged that the adult had his or her best interests at heart.Several reviewers have commented that the end of the book is a cop out, and yes it might be disappointing if you were expecting a big, dramatic magical event. In truth, however, it is a masterful conclusion to the rules subplot. The conclusion underscores that rules are made to be kept, and that breaking them and then trying to sneakily get around them only causes problems. If one admits to breaking the rules, as the crooked magician should have done, and then tries to correct the mistake, it often avoids a great deal of trouble and ultimately works out better.Overall, this book is a great read for young and old alike.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A return to form for Baum By Blake Petit While the last three books in L. Frank Baum's "Oz" series ("Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz", "The Road to Oz" and "The Emerald City of Oz") were all rather lackluster, this book was a return to form. The problem with the other installments was a lack of a new story -- they were all about people who went to Oz, met lots of strange and interesting people, and had a happy ending."The Patchwork Girl of Oz," however, had a very good story to bolster the old Oz formula. Ojo the Unlucky, a young Munchkin lad, along with the Glass Cat and Scraps, the Patchwork Girl, set out to find magical ingredients needed to restore his uncle and a magician's wife to life after they are accidentally petrified. So the story is, again, about someone wandering Oz and meeting strange and interesting people, but giving Ojo a quest gave the book a different angle, a sense of urgency -- this was a boy on a mission to save two lives. The ending is somewhat abrupt, although quite in-character for Baum's creations, but overall it is one of the better Oz books, a real return to form after a few that just didn't click.

Exploration of major problem for many veterans By plane Michael Palmer was an MD and the author of books of fiction both on medically related themes as well as other novels. He passed away suddenly in 2013 leaving a void in the literary world that will be difficult to fill. He did, as many authors do, have ideas as outlines of books in the planning stage. His son, Daniel Palmer, who is not an MD but has a background in the high tech area, has written successful novels involved with domestic suspense. Daniel has taken background and outline from an idea being developed by his father and completed a novel based on a conspiracy in the medical field. Dr Carrie Bryant, a young neurosurgeon is a highly regarded doctor in residence at White Memorial hospital. Due to scheduling difficulties she is given a chance to do her first unsupervised brain surgery. She performs the difficult procedure but unforeseen complications arise. While exhausted Carrie has to rush back to her patient and makes a tragic mistake resulting in permanent brain damage for the woman she has operated on. During the inquest looking into the operation Carrie feels impelled to resign her position at White Memorial. She moves back into her parent's house in order to get herself together to continue with her medical career. Her brother Adam, a returning veteran suffering from PTSD after being in combat also lives there and his condition leads Carrie into exploring another, different job. When Carrie learns about a new technique involving Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) being tested as a treatment for the emotional and memory trauma occurring in PTSD by the VA she decides to enter that program as a surgeon and as a way back into medicine. Her first operation is successful, but amazingly the patient mysteriously vanishes. Almost immediately after her second operation, also successful has the same result - the patient vanishes. David Hoffman, an investigative reporter with a local newspaper is writing a story about the incidence of PTSD in returning veterans and in his work has interviewed Carrie. She feels free to ask him to start investigating the disappearances: which he does. The investigation uncovers a conspiracy going to the very top of the Veterans Administration and exposes both Carrie and David to great danger. Daniel Palmer incorporates his father's notes and explanations into the novel making it both a fascinating medical story as well as an adventure into a major conspiracy. Very readable with explanations about PTSD and it's effects on many combat veterans with a need to develop new procedures to help them return to civilian life.

Credible final Michael Palmer finished by author son Daniel By Jerry Bull We were devoted Michael Palmer fans, with the possible exception of his Lou Welcome novels (which were too incredulous and too political); and so wasted no time snatching up “Trauma”, even though we knew it had to be mostly written by author son Daniel, with a draft or outline left from dad before his sudden passing. We found a reasonably well-conceived plot with good writing reminiscent for sure of Michael – but felt much of the action in the latter half to be too big a stretch. The gist of the story is that a pretty accomplished brain surgeon resident, Carrie Bryant, makes a bad mistake and resigns her position, only to take on almost a contractor position to implant deep brain stimulation probes and associated accouterments at a Veteran’s Hospital. We found the discussion and illumination of these techniques, with which we were familiar relating to Parkinson’s Disease, to be interesting and encouraging when applied to severe cases of PTSD, certainly a topical issue. When things go mysteriously wrong with several patients, who eventually disappear, and then Carrie runs into all kinds of roadblocks at work, and then personal violence, it soon becomes obvious some sort of conspiracy is afoot. While we readers can easily suspect the perps involved, it takes till nearly the end to clear everything up, with pretty decent suspense building to the climax. Our problems revolve around the fact that no actual brain surgeon would be treated with such low accord and barred from following up with patients. Moreover the “action” part of the book, wherein Carrie and a journalist friend play amateur sleuth, is somewhat hard to swallow. While Palmer fans will surely not wish to skip his last effort, we wish it had better reflected the thriller mastery more evident in his earlier novels.

By Deana Review by DeanaCarrie has become a well known neurosurgeon that is highly respected. During a procedure, one mistake changes her future forever. After being dismissed from her job at the hospital , she decides to go home. Her parents are there to support her during this transition in her life. She is glad to be home but still sees that her brother has not improved much. He has been suffering from PTSD. Adam seems fine by looking at him, but Carrie knows the turmoil going on inside his brain. She soon finds a new job that she believes will help her brother and others that suffer from PTSD. As she starts to do the procedure on a patient , she starts to see changes that should not be happening to the patient . Instead of improving, he seems to regressing. Cassie soon uncovers dark secrets about the program she has been working for. i If you are looking for a heart pounding nail biting ride, this is a must read. You can feel your heart race as the words from the pages grab you into the drama that the characters are living. The best medical thriller I have read. I feel as if I was right there with the characters as they faced danger,. I commend the authors for their intelligent thought provoking story that deals with a subject that many people suffer with everyday . A quote from the book Trauma says . " Rember those with invisible wounds." Thanks to the authors for reminding us that there are those that have wounds no one sees.

With enormous heart and dazzling agility, Amy Franklin-Willis expertly mines the fault lines in one Southern working-class family. Driven by the soulful voices of 42-year-old Ezekiel Cooper and his mother, Lillian, The Lost Saints of Tennessee journeys from the 1940s to 1980s as it follows Zeke's evolution from anointed son to honorable sibling to unhinged middle-aged man.

After Zeke loses his twin brother in a mysterious drowning and his wife to divorce, only ghosts remain in his hometown of Clayton, Tennessee. Zeke makes the decision to leave town in a final attempt to escape his pain, throwing his two treasured possessions - a copy of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and his dead brother's ancient dog - into his truck and heading east. He leaves behind two young daughters and his estranged mother, who reveals her own conflicting view of the Cooper family story in a vulnerable but spirited voice stricken by guilt over old sins and clinging to the hope that her family isn't beyond repair.

When Zeke finds refuge with cousins in Virginia horse country, divine acts in the form of severe weather, illness, and a new romance collide, leading Zeke to a crossroads where he must decide the fate of his family.

Kane "You running away from something?"Moses Washington to Ezekiel Cooper in The Lost Saints of Tennessee"Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."Leo Tolstoy in Anna KareninaSet in southwestern Tennessee and the countryside around Charlottesville, Virginia, Amy Franklin-Willis' soon-to-be-released novel The Lost Saints of Tennessee (Atlantic Monthly Press) is a story about running away from something...and running to something and even... someone. The main character of the story, a forty-two year old man named Ezekiel Cooper, is a man who is running from tragic loss of a brother and a marriage; a mother who betrayed her family and who is dying; and the pain and confusion of a life that has not turned out the way he, and others, had hoped it would.Zeke, and his family's, story of loss, betrayal, pain, hope rekindled, unresolved conflict, and second chances is sketched out by Willis in a tight but very matter-of-fact first person narrative as the reader is walked, mainly by Zeke but also his dying mother, Lillian, through 40 years of family history and secrets through flashbacks. The result is a tale that will grab the reader's heart as s/he responds with both high regard for and profound frustration with Zeke and his choices. And along side the theme of running away; of pain; of deep grief; there is the theme of forgiveness - and the choice whether to forgive or not.I find Franklin-Willis' characters to be human in all of their foibles and failings and yet also in their aspirations to break out of their (often) self imposed limits due to their adolescent choices, addictive habits, the cultural of deference to parental wishes (for the most part), and the debilitating effects of their secrets (and sins). They truly are "lost saints."What I like about this novel is Franklin-Willis, an eighth generation southerner, has captured in a simple way, the deeply spiritual aspect of small town rural south while juxtaposing, in a kind and honest way, the deeply human aspect of the characters and the tensions between the two. Faith, in a God who is very personal to them, is woven through the story and is confirmed, I think in the second chances given to Zeke by Zeke's ex-wife, his Virginia girlfriend, his oldest daughter, and even Zeke himself.I give this novel five stars and found it worth the time to read.Disclosure: I received an uncorrected proof of this book via the Amazon Vine program in exchange for review of it. I was not required to write a positive review.

Lost And Found Family By Someone Else When the word gets out, this book is going to find an enthusiastic following among fans of Southern domestic fiction. It follows the fortunes and misfortunes of the Cooper family from the 1940s through 1985. The 1985 sections are told in the present tense. The story opens in 1985 with Zeke Cooper, age 42, leaving his Tennessee hometown with the intention of committing suicide. He blames himself for the death of his twin brother Carter 10 years ago, and for the subsequent divorce from his wife Jackie. Instead of killing himself, he finds a haven with relatives in Virginia. This gives him the distance he needs to reflect on his mistakes and get some perspective on his family and its history.Zeke narrates the story, with a brief section mid-book giving his mother Lillian a chance to tell her story. The family has seen more than its share of tragedy, sometimes self-inflicted and sometimes just bad luck. Teen pregnancies, infidelities, financial setbacks, substance abuse, deaths, divorces, and disease have taken their toll over the years.Through Zeke's eyes we see his lifelong devotion to Carter, his twin whose brain was damaged by a childhood illness. We also see Zeke's stubborn refusal to forgive his mother for something she did 25 years ago -- something many of us might have done in her situation. When she faces a health crisis, Zeke must decide if he has punished her long enough.Amy Franklin-Willis has put her all into the crafting of her first novel. Her prose flows beautifully and never gets bogged down. She knows her characters and has carefully worked out the complexities in their relationships.More dramatic tension and less predictability would have made this a stronger, more convincing story for me. For all the heartache and hardship the characters suffer, the resolutions come a bit too smoothly. Once I got into the rhythm of the story, I could begin to guess way ahead of time what decisions the characters would make and how each situation would play out. Were I a Southerner, I probably would have given the book four stars. It will appeal to readers who enjoy family dramas with a small-town Southern flair.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Compelling new novel By Marcia Sterling Amy Franklin-Willis has serious writing chops. The prose is tight and powerful. The story line is compelling. She evokes strong emotion without being sentimental. This is one of those classic stories of the South that will continue to gain recognition as people discover it. It's my favorite new book.

I’ll teach you. But first, why don’t you find me a story or two to read before she goes to sleep? And we’ll need a glass of water.”“A book or two and a glass of water. Are you going to do a magic trick?”Diane disappeared in the back and I went to find the books. Locating a story or two shouldn’t be a problem. I went to the bookcase. I slid my finger along the titles and passed by The Great Gatsby – too complicated. A Farewell to Arms – unlike the movie, she dies in the end. The Art of War – not tonight. It was looking pretty slim until I finally found my number one management-training book, Green Eggs and Ham.I got a cup of water, and set it and the book next to the bed.“Diane?” I called tentatively, as I knocked on the bathroom door. “Is she a prune yet?”“Come on in. We’re almost done.”Come on in? “Are you sure?”“Oh, Dylan … ”Once inside, I discovered a little girl covered in soap and a lovely arrangement of chaotic shampoo horns jutting from her head. Spring looked like a spiny blowfish. Then I realized I was staring at a little naked girl and turned around.“I’m sorry, Diane. I didn’t realize she was uh, not wearing clothes.”“Did you think she’d have a swimsuit on? She’s three-and-a-half. Don’t worry.”I turned back around. “I just don’t want Spring to feel uncomfortable.”Spring turned around with her arms crossed over her chest, which made me feel a little better. If I had to be in the bathroom while she bathed, if she covered her little … self, then I could talk with Diane while they did their bath thing. Then she did something I never imagined she’d do. Spring hopped to her feet, spreading her arms and sending soap bubbles into the ozone. I quickly turned away. The last thing I remember was me slamming face-first into an open cabinet door. When I opened my eyes, I was staring at the ceiling. Wrapped in a white towel and looking like a human marshmallow, Spring waved at me.Diane pressed a compress to my nose and forehead.“Dylan, are you okay?”I grabbed the ice and held it to my nose, which felt like it had taken the majority of the impact. I didn’t need to check the mirror to know that my nose had swollen. It now obstructed vision in both eyes. “I told you I didn’t have any experience with that whole bath thing.”“You didn’t make it to the bath thing. You got as far as the cabinet door thing, which led to the ice thing.” She touched my head. “Better use lots of ice on this tonight.”Feeling a little better, I sat up. “What happens next?”“It’s probably going to swell up a bit more.”“I meant with your evening routine.”“Oh, that. Spring goes to bed and we read to her. Did you find any books?”“Spring, do you like Dr, Seuss?” My face felt heavy.“Yeah!”“Maybe you can read it to her,” Diane said.“Me?”“Every night before bed,” Diane said, “we read two books, and sing a song, and … ”“ … water!”“And we drink a small glass,” Diane eyed the Yankees 32-ounce guzzle cup I’d brought in, “of water and then we do animal impressions. Spring, is it okay if Dylan reads to you instead of Mommy tonight?”She nodded, and Diane handed me the book.In spite of the pain in my nose, I thought it would be fun to read the book to Spring. I’d always had a thing for Dr. Seuss. I pulled the chair close to the bed and began Green Eggs and Ham.By the time we reached, “I do so like green eggs and ham,” her eyes had started closing – even though I could see she was trying to keep them open. She hadn’t had much sleep since flying in from Chicago two nights before, and I assumed Spring was history for the night. Then I learned something important about children: having a routine can mean a lot more to them than their need for sleep.“Song … ?” Diane looked at me.“What?” I asked.“Mom, you do it,” Spring said.I gestured toward Diane. “She wants you to sing.”Still looking at me, Diane said, “Spring, wouldn’t you love for Dylan to sing to you tonight?” She was delighting in making me feel uncomfortable. The interesting thing was that I was enjoying her doing it.Spring shook her head. “He doesn’t know how.”I mustered up as much of an indignant expression as I could pull off with the ice still pressed to my nose. “Don’t know how? Clearly, you missed the New York Times review of my last shower.” I removed the compress, stretched my neck, then belted out:New York.Concrete jungle where dreams are made of &hellipSpring buried her face in her pillow and I stopped.Diane laughed. “How about something a little less edgy. Maybe John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt?”Spring turned back toward us. “Yeah!”“I don’t really remember the words.”“Just follow along.”Diane began to sing. Spring giggled through every refrain, then called for another song, as her routine required two. Diane looked at me and I raised my eyebrows to suggest that I wasn’t about to venture forth on my own here.“How about The Itsy-Bitsy Spider?” Diane said.“The Band of Horses version or … ”She chuckled. “Just sing along.”As Diane began to sing, the song came back like I was in preschool again. When I remembered some of the hand motions, I abandoned my compress. Spring delighted in the songs. At first, I thought it was because we were entertaining her and keeping her up late. But with each verse of the song and every spider dance move, I could tell that she was pleased with my participation.“Water, please,” she said, sticking her hand out. After drinking a few sips – there was probably enough water in there to last until her fourth birthday – she adjusted her pillow for the next part of the show.“There’s more?” I asked, looking at Diane. It seemed to me that this routine was designed to last until the morning.“This is the really fun part,” Diane said, winking. “We do animal impressions. I’m guessing you’ll be really good at this.”“Is there a video camera somewhere? Did my friend Hank put you up to this?”“Oh, come on, Dylan. You were made for his role.”I shook my head to deny the fact that I was actually enjoying this. You don’t get too many inner child opportunities when you’re out conquering the world.

44 of 49 people found the following review helpful. enjoyable extended family drama By A Customer Twenty-nine years old Manhattan Mason, Brand and Partners executive Dylan Hunter seems to have everything. Women want him; his apartment is the best in New York; his work has made him the top gun and kept his plan to retire at forty viable. A friend of his Billie works at the same firm. She is the female Dylan, but because she is a woman society considers her a ruthless bitch who is ambitious and aggressive while applauding Dylan for the same tactics.Dylan's former girlfriend from his Chicago days a century ago, Diane has arrived accompanied by her three years old daughter Spring. She explains he is all she knows in the Big Apple as she plans to start anew. Diane asks if they can stay at his place for now; even he cannot understand why he said yes. Spring turns his life around as she draws on his perfectly painted walls, introduces him to the animals at the zoo and dines on a gourmet macaroni and tofu with cheese. When an accident occurs, Dylan continues to care for Spring by allowing some of the plates he spins in his previous hedonistic life to crash. He enjoys every minute with her; as does Billie, but knows the court will soon intervene. This is an enjoyable extended family drama as Dylan and Billie learn what life is all about from a precocious (perhaps too precocious) little girl. The cast is solid especially the lead trio, but also those at the office, his best friend Jimbo and case worker Mrs. Eckleberg. Readers will enjoy this poignant tale as Michael Baron provides a deep message that to lead a fulfilling life, one must spin various plates including the care and nurturing of others.Harriet Klausner

18 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Touching and compelling By Wendy L. Hines Have you ever seen those clowns who are spinning many plates and then they let one fall so that they can save the others? Dylan Hunter is constantly spinning but refuses to let any plates drop. He's a young executive director for a public relations firm who works hard and parties even harder. He has a great Manhatten apartment that has a revolving door where the women are concerned. He tells himself he may want to have kids later - much later, but marriage doesn't even enter into the equation. In the middle of the night, he hears a knock on his door. He doesn't know who it could be, but is frantically looking for something to wear and to see where his girl of the night is. She seems to have left but her underthings are strewn about the apartment. He is shocked to see ex-girlfriend Diane at the door with her young daughter. Still half out of it, he invites them in while he is frantically figuring out dates in his head to see if the girl is his. Diane explains to him that she has sold everything to come to Manhatten at his suggestion to get a great job. Dylan made that suggestion years ago, but it took this long for her to take the plunge. They need somewhere to stay until they find an apartment and Dylan quickly agrees to them staying with him.Dylan's plates are spinning; he is not used to people in his home and interrupting his routine, but he quickly adapts. The little girl, Spring, quickly makes her way into his heart. But when there is an accident, Dylan becomes the sole caretaker of Spring. Dylan does his best, but Spring is scared that Dylan will go away too. Two people find their way towards one another, but Dylan's plates are spinning at a frantic rate and something has to fall.Michael Baron pens such soul-searching novels that are full of warmth, humor and superb characters. When you first meet Dylan, you see a partying no-care-in-the-world player just looking out for himself. But Dylan grows and matures as a little girl shows him how to really live and to love. The antics that Dylan and Spring get up to will tug on your heartstrings and make you laugh out loud. A very touching and compelling story not to be missed!

Baron's descriptions had me feeling as though I was right there with "D" and his friends, Jim, Hank, Billie, and his boss, Mason.****SPOILER ALERT*** DON'T READ UNLESS YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT ***Dylan is a regular young playboy, picking up chicks at bars, never staying with one for any length of time. He drinks with his buddies and plans to wow the business world with his intelligence and he's got what it takes.Early one morning after one of his late night rendezvouses leaves his apartment, showing up on his doorstop is a woman from one of these flings along with a small girl. "D" as his friends know him as - quickly does the math trying to figure out whether he's going to find out he's the girl's dad.The woman, Diane tells D that she sold her belongings, left Chicago and now needs a place to stay for her and her daughter until she finds an apartment. D agrees. She quickly insinuates herself into his life and into his apartment. It doesn't take long for Diane's young daughter Spring to find her way into his heart.Diane lands a job and an apartment and moves out but continues to be a big part in D's life. He finds himself asking divorced Jim how he knew that his ex was "the one," thinking that Diane might be "the one" for him. He then talks to his friend, ex-lover, and co-worker Billie about it but Billie plays around just like D so she's clueless.D is ready to declare his feelings for Diane but he gets a dreaded phone call where he find out that she got killed in an accident. He has no clue who to notify. Diane's parents are long deceased and Spring's father never knew he had a child, according to Diane. He expects that Spring will be out of his life now in no time and things will be back to the way they were pre-Diane and Spring - back to his former playboy life once he finds a relative for her but quickly discovers that the three and half year old is scared and needs something and someone familiar. Her Christmas gift to him is a weekend on Cape Cod for the three of them. After a great weekend, D discovers that Billie still wants to play the field and he tells her to just go and that he can't have her in their lives like that. He misses her.Child Services shows up at his door and they take Spring away. He's made no attempt for custody..._________________________________________________Dylan finds that he's grown up a lot -- he's changed having Spring in his life. He can't picture life without her.I was touched by the way his bar friends were there for him and for Spring. Who especially touched me was his divorced friend Jim who lived in the same building as D. Of course, Billie touched me as well, in the way she let down her hair with them and became like a child herself. She brought over food and Jim had the beer and pizza. D could go to Jim's door and wake him in the middle of the night, bringing Jim to the door in his boxers looking frazzled, letting D in and talking with him. There were the ducks, the penguins, the zoo and Mr. Jim and hot dogs. (Mr. Jim isn't the same Jim as the neighbor. Mr. Jim sells those hot dogs.) There was the doorman and others whom Spring never failed to charm. There was the mac and cheese, the frozen pizzas, the soy, and tofu. -------------Yes, it's a romance, but more than romance, it's the letting go of the love of oneself and opening up to give and receive love to/from others. It's the learning to let go of self-dependence and depending on others. Letting others in. Really in.

I read that coloring helped to keep focused and calm if they got nervous. Well it did help her and I would sit and do it too. I got hooked. I find it truly relaxing. I do it most nights before going to bed .

An Exercise in Relaxation By Jonathan Clyde Moore Let's be honest, this is just something folks do to waste time. And that's the point.Waste time by calming your mind and engaging your brain to detail oriented tasks where you control the pace and flow and outcome. If you can't "waste" a little time now and again, you might as well find someone who thinks so poorly of you that they will first marry you and then spend 18 years telling everyone what a horrible person you are, all the while throwing accusations of infidelity around. But I'm not bitter.

Thirty-two-year-old Candida Darroway, an Italian professor at Altamonte, a small college near San Francisco, searches for her identity. Still single, but in a relationship, she knows she needs to get her personal life in gear. She’s offered an opportunity she can’t pass up. The college is sponsoring a fund-raising, three-week luxury art tour to Italy, the equivalent of traveling for gastronomy and Renaissance art. Her colleague, Professor Rob Ferrell, would act as the art history leader and Candida would be the cultural leader. For some reason, she feels this trip will prove her own Renaissance. So begins a tour filled with misfits, art analysis, and gourmet cuisine, where Candida becomes Ferrell’s scapegoat for what goes wrong. The group—a mixed bag—favors Ferrell’s leadership, ostracizing Candida. She yearns for Professor Wes Spotswood, a man twenty-one years her senior, with whom she is having a torrid affair. During the trip, medieval Italy pulses under Renaissance skin, drunkards reform, and old flames rekindle. In the end, Altamonte’s tour offers more than an appreciation of art and history. Candida discovers powers of judgment and social interaction. Other destinations have opened up grander vistas to her than even her beloved Italian Renaissance offered.

Giardina I have never taken a tour of Italy, but novelist Barbara Sher Tinsley made me feel as if I had been there in the summer of 1973, when a 32-year-old Italian professor at Altamonte College named Candida Darroway co-led an Italian art history tour.Candida Darroway is the reason I love this book, because her voice rings so clear and true. Not only does she make me see things she sees (sculpture, painting, architecture), she makes me feel the things she feels. There is a lot more going on than the art tour, and Candida tells you all about it.Candida’s Own Italian Renaissance is filled with interesting characters. Professor Rob Ferrell, an art historian, would act as the tours co-leader. Handsome, charming and gifted, he tries to seduce Candida, but ends up betraying her. The friction between Candida and Rob is just one of the reasons you want to keep turning the pages to find out what happens.Wes Spotswood (51), Chair of Renaissance History at the University of Wisconsin, becomes Candida’s lover. Candida’s affair with Wes is sensuous, playful, but hopeless. Wes realizes that without employment at UC or Stanford, marriage is impossible. For Candida, a move to Madison threatens her professional career. Sadly, the two lovers part at the end of the tour.Sean O’Connor, once a part-timer in classics at Altamonte, is reunited with Candida on the campus of UC Berkeley. Determined to marry her, he says, “Candida, I play for keeps. If you consent to go out with me, it’s fair to warn you that I will propose marriage.”In the best of all possible worlds, Candida should find happiness. But if you want to know what happens in Candida’s Own Italian Renaissance, you’ll just have to read the book!

I looked for other works by Barbara Tinsley and was delighted to find a novel. I couldn't wait to read and once I started I had a hard time putting it down. The author manages to combine two quests--a trip through Italy and it's fascinating history and her own dramatic quest for love. I feel as if I had been with her during her trip to Europe. She vividly describes both the joys and challenges of travel. And she experiences many challenges since she is in charge of the tour.I certainly enjoyed the tour, but I enjoyed her character descriptions even more. What a varied and interesting group of people! But my favorite part of the novel was her quest for true love! The book, in many ways, is the perfect historical novel. Most of the action takes place in the 1970's, which seems like ancient history now.We are reminded of many aspects of the popular culture of the era. But the author also highlights the fascinatinghistory of ItalyThere is a surprise at the "almost ending" of the book--and then another surprise at the real end! I won't give those surprises away, but I strongly recommend the book. It will definitely hold the reader's interest.

This book is a fascinating, absorbing story of a young woman professor of Italian literature, Candida, who is a co-leader of an art tour to Italy. The reader is swept along on the journey, and in the process learns about history, art, literature, and Italian food and wine. The novel is hard to put down, as one adventure leads to the next. Along the way, the author gives the reader insights into some of the foibles of academic life. There is love and tragedy leading to both high and low points on the trip. It is Candida's journey, and she discovers things about herself and about the world on the way.
