A view on Medieval/Renaissance Herbalism and Medicine By Kim Robertson I first heard of this book as being an excellent primary source for herbs and herbalism from the 16/17th Centuries. It is very comprehensive and aside from a listing of each herb and its properties, it has several sections teaching the fundiments of medicine of the time. It covers: * how a herb is assigned to a planet * how a degree of strength is determined and what it means * what 'humours' it affects and what 'humours' (bodily fluid systems) are * and much much more. If you are looking for a source to use for alternate medicine then this is NOT the best starting place. There are better works of a modern nature out there for that. However, as a back-up resource or a way of learning about the time when medicine was still holistic and not too scentific then this is he book for you. The Wordsworth edition is in paperback and easy on the pocket. This publisher takes certain classic works and keeps them in print in small runs from time to time by demand. This means that although the book may be not immediately available, it will beome available again in the near future. I hope this helps you.

Culpeper eventually set up his own healing practice near London. He was moved by the suffering of the poor and decided to help the them by selling medicines to them at a very cheap price and encouraged them to use local species. In the 17th century, the physicians were leaning more toward non-botanical medications such as mercury, arsenic iron and sulfur etc. It is most likely that the physicians of that day resented Culpeper's popularity and considered him a threat, since be made their secrets accessible to the common person--therefore they tried to discredit him.The people of England due to his genuine concern for them loved Culpeper. The colonist took his herbal to the New World as a medical reference and guide of when to plant and harvest these medical plants. His mistake was he threatening the near monopoly on medical knowledge that the College of Physicians enjoyed. This book contains a comprehensive description of nearly all herbs along with descriptions of their medicinal properties and instructions on preparing and using them to treat many different illnesses. It also included precise botanical illustrations. For 300 years this book was the standard for herbal remedies.

Culpeper's Complete Herbal By Chris Belgum If you have an interest in Herbs and their culinary, mystic and medicinal usages, both modern and historical, then this IS the book for you. It is beautifully illustrated and text is written in both medieval English and modern English. Each plant (it includes some fruits and trees as well) is pictured and the habitat is described. Along with each description is any affinity to a ruling planet as well.My only critisism is that it contains a great deal of jargon, you will need to read up on herbalism per se to understand how to make tinctures etc. That said the book is a reference to the plants not the art.I have had my (well thumbed copy)for over 10 years now and it is a constant companion to my interests in the natural power of the Earth and her fruits.

Review "The first and greatest of English detective novels." ---T. S. Eliot

Review "This superbly edited and richly documented edition of what T.S. Eliot described as 'the first and greatest of English detective novels' is the definitive and indispensible edition of The Moonstone." (William Baker )"The Moonstone, one of Wilkie Collins's most popular and successful novels, has never been out of print since its first publication in 1868. Is another edition needed? The answer, in the case of Professor Farmer's scholarly and impeccably edited text, must be a resounding yes. Invaluable for his survey of past and present reactions to the story, and for his own insights, the edition also includes historical and background material and a well-chosen collection of relevant contemporary documents—always an important feature of Broadview Literary Texts. This Moonstone will surely prove another winner for Broadview's list." (Catherine Peters, author of The King of Inventors: A Life of Wilkie Collins )"Steve Farmer's Broadview edition will undoubtedly become the definitive edition of The Moonstone. [It] deserves a five star rating." (The Wilkie Collins Society Journal )"Here is a book which anyone with an interest in either Collins or Victorian literature in general will want to buy. The chief reason for this is Broadview's exceptionally generous editorial policy in its series of Literary Texts, and the very good use that Steve Farmer has made of this generosity. In this edition, for a reasonable price, we are given not only a beautifully printed and error-free annotated text of the novel, but also a full introduction and over 150 pages of appendices...This is the first time that Collins' dramatic adaptation of the novel has been reprinted and this text alone is well worth the price of the book." (Adrian J. Pinnington )

From the Publisher The Broadview Literary Texts series is an effort to represent the ever-changing canon of literature in English by bringing together texts long regarded as classics with valuable, though lesser-known literature.

Eliot called `The Moonstone' "the first and greatest English detective novel." Is the novel worthy of such praise? We shall see...The story begins with a brief prologue describing how the famous yellow diamond was captured during a military campaign in India by a British officer in 1799. The action moves quickly to 1848 England, where, according to the British officer's will, the diamond has been given to one of the soldier's young relatives, Rachel Verinder. Yet only hours after the diamond arrives at the Verinder estate, it disappears. Was it stolen by a relative? A servant? And who are these three Indian men who keep hanging around the estate?`The Moonstone' is told from the point of view of several characters. The first portion of the tale is told by Gabriel Betteredge, house steward of the Verinder estate, who has been working for the family practically his entire life. Although over 200 pages, Betteredge's account holds the reader's interest as he introduces the main players and the crime itself. The next account, by distant Verinder relative Miss Clack, is humorous and somewhat important, but far too long (nearly 100 pages) for its relevance to the story. But after Miss Clack's account, things really take off at breakneck speed.Readers who latch onto the T.S. Eliot quote expecting a modern detective tale will be sorely disappointed. You aren't going to see anything resembling Jeffrey Deaver, James Patterson, Sue Grafton, or even Mary Higgins Clark. You also won't see Mickey Spillane, Dashiel Hammett, or Raymond Chandler. Nor will you see Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, or Martha Grimes. You won't even see Arthur Conan Doyle. But you WILL see the novel that influenced them all. You'll also see something else. Something that modern mystery/detective writers have for the most part lost. Characters. Oh sure, modern writers have characters, but for the most part, the reader only learns enough about the character to forward the plot. In our time, plot is King. When `The Moonstone' was published (1868), one of the novel's attractions was its characters. Collins has painted each of these characters so well that the reader feels that they know not only how they look, but their mannerisms, their movements, how they think, and their view of the world they live in. That type of character development is seriously lacking today, not from all writers, but from far too many.Of course, the down side is that Colllins also took over 500 pages to develop those characters. Is the book too long? For most modern readers, the answer is yes. I believe it all has to do with your expectation. Put modern mystery/detective stories out of your head. Then read `The Moonstone' as you would any other novel. Get lost in the atmosphere and the characters. Immerse yourself. Most of all, enjoy. Reading `The Moonstone' is like eating at a fine restaurant after months of fast food. When it's over, you just want to sit back in your favorite chair and say, "It's nice to know that the finer things are still available." Yes they are. Treat yourself to this gourmet book.522 pages

An immersive, unforgettable mystery classic By Robert Moore THE MOONSTONE was the first mystery story, and it in many ways remains one of the most remarkable. Working in the shadow of the Gothic and Romantic literary traditions, Wilkie Collins managed to create something new and unique. Instead of the endless evocation of atmosphere and focusing on sinister villains, Collins focuses instead on a simple mystery and its solution: who stole the diamond known as the Moonstone, and where did it go? But any reader of the novel knows that the mystery is secondary to the exposition and the marvelous parade of characters. It isn't the getting to the resolution of the mystery that is the main thing, but the process of getting there. One of the great attractions of the novel is the extraordinary style of the writing. Although the first English mystery story, it had not yet devolved into a genre, and Collins was not aware that a mystery story could not also be great literature. As a result, he imbued his characters with enormous charm and give them each a vivid manner in expressing themselves. The multiple narratives by this remarkable characters was a strategy to deal with the problem of authorial point of view. On the one hand, Collins wanted to avoid the omniscient narrator who would know the truth both about each character and about the myster of the fate of the diamond. Collins therefore cast the novel in the form of a succession of narratives by the various participants in the novel. He thereby limits the knowledge of each narrator, but he also is able thereby to provide considerable variation in the style of each narrative. The two most remarkable segments are those by Gabriel Betteridge, House-Steward in the service of Lady Verinder and her cousin Miss Clack, a prim and fervid evangelical Christian whose missionary zeal and prudish moralizing provide many of the funniest moments of the novel. The style of these two could not be more distinct, both from the rest of the narratives and from each other. Miss Clack has constantly to fight a tendency to sermonize. She is apt to turn out passages such as: "A thundering knock at the street door startled us all. I looked through the window, and saw the World the Flesh, and the Devil waiting before the house--as typified in a carriage and horses, a powdered footman, and three of the most audaciously dressed women I ever beheld in my life." Betteridge, on the other hand, is solid, practical, a tad parochial, but ferociously loyal to his employer. For him the good life consists of a good pipe and a copy of ROBINSON CRUSOE at hand. If one laughs a bit at Miss Clack, the reader comes to thoroughly like Betteredge. Between the two of them, their narrative occupy more than half the novel. The others are also quite enjoyable, but not to the degree that these two are.THE MOONSTONE is a page turner, which is to say that it is a delight to read. One wants to read quickly both because each page is such a joy and because one wants to discover what happens next. The characters are mainly enjoyable, but like so many authors his eccentric characters are far more memorable and enjoyable than his central characters. Betteredge, Miss Clack, and Sgt. Cuff far outstrip the "hero" of the book, who while a good citizen, is from a literary point of view a tad boring.I can agree with those readers who consider THE WOMAN IN WHITE a better book, but this is another of those comparisons that are odious. The book is so enjoyable, fun, and memorable that I can't imagine any reader lamenting during the course of its pages that they weren't reading the other book instead.

Educated as an electrical engineer, I did not appreciate literature until I reached my 70's. This book is to the modern detective novel as Maxwell's equations are to the wireless engineer of today. All the modern detective novels follow the basics exhibited in Moonstone, but usually fall far short because they leave out one or more of the "equations". A thoroughly gripping and inventive novel by a master.

Hope Betrayed: The Silent Tempest, Book 2, by E. J. Godwin

About the Author E. J. Godwin doesn't write fiction. He creates worlds to discover.Even when he was a shy, 10-year-old boy he could never stay away too long from his one never-faltering passion, the stories and artwork of his imagination. Even today he still enjoys art as a secondary outlet for his creativity, but the written word has always provided the most freedom and flexibility. For that reason, fantasy and science fiction have always been his favorite genres. As the years passed he added more depth and texture to his inventions, until now, with the help of his editor, Erica Orloff, he has released his stories for readers to enjoy, and hopes to share more in the future. He lives in Michigan with an abysmally stupid yet endearing Persian cat, and enjoys bike riding, hiking ... just about anything that frees his imagination.

By PattyMacDotComma Another solid 4★s for the second part of this fantasy/sagaAfter leaving Caleb, Telai and Warren out in the wilderness, we find them struggling to get back home.I was wishing for a prologue to remind me of Book #1, "Rite of Exile", because many of the place names and character names are unusual and hard (for me) to remember. So I thought I’d look for the map at the back, and voila! A ‘chapter’ at the very end called “What has Gone Before”. I’m glad I found it.I think it’s better to read these books in order, so you can appreciate the relationship development and the flow of the plot, but if you take a break, as I did, then the ‘last’ chapter is a big help. I didn’t find another glossary of names, but I still have Book 1 to refer to, and the ones we’re interested in are easy enough to remember.Back to the story. Widower Caleb Stenger, The Falling Man, and his young son (11) Warren, ‘fell out of the sky’ (crashed spaceship), were adopted by the nice folks on their new planet, learned the language and how to fight (well, Dad did), and fought off some evil foes. But when Warren became deathly ill, Caleb broke the rules to seek an ancient talisman, the Lor’yentre, said to cure anything. Breaking the rules means Exile. Master Raen, Soren, is travelling with them, believing in the righteousness of Caleb’s quest. And of course, Telai, the beautiful and caring Grand Loremaster, turns up before too long, because what’s a good saga without a love story? There’s a giant earth monster and a particularly nasty force field that attacks them with something like brain-splitting migraines to prevent them from crossing out of the area to which they’ve been exiled. And it’s snowing and miserable. And they run out of food. The Lor’yentre produces mixed results for Warren, which will lead us into Book #3, for sure! The story is well told and the language and characters continue to be a delightful, believable mix of modern and mythical. Godwin is an author who does not stoop to wordy, pretentious dialogue in an attempt to impress. He has a nice turn of phrase when it’s warranted, as in this brief description of where they’re headed on horseback:“With Trethrealm’s harvest well past, the road lay empty for miles. The heather-strewn landscape gradually lifted into long, shallow ridges, their moonlit slopes thick with vineyards. Far to the east stood the foothills of the Lorgdir, an occasional gap in the clouds revealing the snow-capped peaks beyond.”But it’s not all easy going. Comes a time they’re struggling down a freezing underground river, at risk of drowning (no spoilers here):“His limbs were stiff from the cold; his heart hammered faster and faster, and his breath rasped in his throat. With every ounce of will at his command he reached for the ledge. His hand slipped, and he lost his grip on the stern. He groped wildly as the current bashed his arms against the stone and drove him under the roaring tumult.“Everything went dark. His body, rigid with fear, turned over and over as the swirling water carried him along, the sound of its fury a dull roar in his ears. He stretched his arms out to either side, felt stone racing near his head. There was no room to breathe.”My only gripe is that I find the many unusual character, tribe, and place names a bit complicated – but I suspect that’s me, and other fans will be fine. :)And I’m sure they will join me in looking out for Book #3, "Fate Defied". Thanks to the author and Booklover Catlady for letting me read an advanced copy of this one.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Awesome and excellent... By Rajalakshmi Prithviraj Hope Betrayed is an excellent book. In fact, I read this book first before I read the first book in the series. And seriously, I do not have anything to complain.I loved the plot. Caleb had a hope when he had come to Ada, a hope to re-live with his son Warren now revived. However, as the plot progresses and ends with a cliffhanger, this hope definitely gets betrayed. It definitely is not a good feeling when a hope, that has been nourished by the heart, gets betrayed. This part of the series makes you empathize and sympathize with a father whose hopes get thoroughly shattered and he feels betrayed by his own son. In short, the relationship aspect between a parent and his child has been depicted really well.Godwin has well-etched out characters. Caleb, Telai, Warren, Soren, all have interesting roles to play. This story has few characters you would truly love to hate and a few whom you would love to love. The author has a great narrative style. Its informative, bringing out facts and historical backgrounds. It has imageries, more of visual and auditory. The language is not too difficult to understand. The story has fantasy and elements of magic in it, but at the same time, it has a tinge of realism to it. And yes, it has its edge-of-the-seat moments as well.To sum up, book two has intrigued me and has made me read book one for a better understanding.P.S- I received this book in exchange on an honest review from Booklover Catlady Publicity. Thank you Maxine.

I could almost taste it By Jenny Rose As I follow Grace Bridges and have subscribed to her e-letters, Strawberry Dreaming came up as a prologue freebie. I’ve already read The Dog With No Name and my interest was already piqued. I read expecting Mariah to fully describe the strawberry as she bit into it. Even in such a short story, Bridges drew me in and I felt like I was biting into thin air myself. These shorts that she puts out for her followers are like bread crumbs, whetting my appetite for more.

Sweet and yet dystopian - just right By Teddi Deppner The setting of this story is a world where something has happened to stop plants from growing and people are going hungry. A treat as simple and sweet as a strawberry is nearly impossible to find. That, along with hints of other world problems, got me imagining what it would be like. The author has a way with words and there's some pure poetry in the descriptions here and there. She knows how to paint the drudgery and angst of office workers, and that awkward time when you aren't sure how a friend feels about you -- or how you feel about them. What happens to the characters themselves is nearly as bittersweet as the dream of the strawberry. An enjoyable bite-sized piece of fiction, and I like getting to know this dystopia a bit more with each story. I don't have a lot of time to read, and these shorter pieces are just right for reading over lunch.

Mariah's prologue the fourth By Cathrine Bonham In this story we finally get to meet Mariah, a young office worker in a dystopian Belfast.I loved the voice and flow of this narrative. Her thoughts about work and her immature co-workers were so true no matter your job or the era you live in.To escape this mundane existance Mariah takes to daydreaming, you guessed it, about better times and a strawberry she once held. As Mariah dreams about the once lush countryside, some of the backstory of this desolate future is revealed. That plus the use of the title character, in my option, makes this a true Prologue. Once the book Mariah's Dream releases I have a feeling I will be glad I read this story.

This riveting war story introduces us to beautiful Kate Zweig, the English widow of a German surgeon, and Claus Murphy, an exiled American with German roots - two lovers with complicated loyalties.

In 1918, Kate and her husband, Horst, are taken for spies by Russian soldiers and forced to flee their field hospital on the eastern front, barely escaping with their lives. Years later, in London during the Nazis' V-1 reign of terror, Claus spends his days making propaganda films and his nights as a British spy, worn down by the war and his own many secrets. When Claus meets the intriguing Kate, he finds himself powerfully drawn to her - even after evidence surfaces that she might not be exactly who she seems. As the war hurtles to a violent end, Claus must decide where his own loyalties lie, whether he can make a difference in the war - and what might be gained by taking a leap of faith with Kate.

Echoing Pat Barker's spare power and the sweep of Sebastian Faulks's historical sagas, The German Woman takes us inside the world wars that defined the 20th century and the hidden histories of two unforgettable characters whose love story will haunt readers' hearts and minds.

A finely constructed, beautifully written novel about the moral complexities of life and survival in wartime By CityGirl Intense content, vivid imagery and meticulous research. The book is rich in historical detail and immerses the reader in two wartime periods: post-WWI in occupied Germany, and end of WW2 during the bombings of London. The first part of the book forcefully describes the chaotic and surreal nature of events as home forces retreat and foreign forces occupy; the post-war period of starvation and the desolation it brings; the demoralizing arrogance of occupying forces; and the daily bartering of goods and soul needed to survive. The second part of the book, at the end of WWII, brings to life the shifting emotional response of a population enduring frequent, unpredictable terror -- the impossibility of living in a constant state of fear, the consequent deadening and reawakening of intense emotions, the awareness of imminent danger breaking constantly through to the surface of daily living. The author is extremely skillful in conveying the passage of time -- the world as described in Part 2 is completely different in feel from that described in Part 1; this is accomplished through countless, detailed descriptions of daily life that enable the reader to feel differences across the two eras -- the milk-carrier's nag; the iron cookstove; a woman sponging off the black line on the back of her leg, drawn to imitate the seam of a stocking; the memory of raspberries in normal times; a child with rickets; a watch ticking on a severed arm. The reader is drenched in the atmosphere of the book's places and times.Throughout, the day-to-day lives of Kate Zweig and her lover Claus illustrate the difficult practical and moral choices that people must navigate in times of war, or of terror -- some images in the book, and some of the responses to perceived "treason" are reminiscent of reactions in the US post 9/11. Questions of identity -- citizenship vs. humanity, self alone and self in relationship with others, the layers of meaning in how we act and what we choose to reveal of ourselves -- are explored in the context of extreme circumstances. The book is best read slowly and with attention to detail. It is not a comfortable book -- war is horrible, and the author doesn't spare us. However, the language is beautiful, and the construction of the book is intricate -- a close reading pays off. The comparison to Graham Greene, both stylistically and in terms of the examination of morality and identity, is apt. I was also reminded of themes and preoccupations of C.P. Snow, Anthony Powell, Pat Barker, and early 20th-century British poetry. Though these themes are set in a historical context, I found myself thinking often of what it must have been like in recent years, and today, to live in Baghdad, Mosul, Kabul, and other areas where civilians are affected by war and daily life becomes a surreal combination of normalcy and random terror.Highly recommended.

Mysterious and Deeply Haunting: A Gem of a Book By Erika Borsos Paul Griner skillfully writes a mysterious story filled with haunting realism about two individuals who become lovers each of whom had lived what seemed a lifetime before they met. Their lives are complicated by their past histories which proves they are survivors but it also creates conflicts which may become their undoing in the end. The author's sparse prose is strikingly sharp and direct, creating a jarring tension and exciting anticipation in the reader who expects some malevolent force to enter like a cold wind on a dark winter's day. The reader anticipates the unexpected at every turn of the page. Civil wars had broken out in various countries even before the end of World War One and now President Woodrow Wilson had a Fourteen Point Peace Plan. Soldiers who spoke Polish or Lithuanian or German came through Wilno where the small field hospital where Kate Zweig worked as a nurse continued its mission despite limited equipment and barely enough coal to properly sterilize the surgical instruments ...In part One, Kate Zweig lives in Wilno, East Prussia in 1919 with her mother-in-law and husband who was a surgeon but is now blind from wounds sustained in World War One. The author's descriptions of life after the war are filled with the realities of privation but a sort of lingering optimism exists which only humans who survived the unspeakable horrors of war can manage to sustain. They hold onto the hope of building a better future. The family moved to Hamburg where life was a bit easier but nonetheless still difficult. The description of Kate receiving a nearly new pair of leather shoes from her mother-in-law and Kate's stopping at a soup kitchen which would make her husband feel ashamed were particularly realistic and effective. In Part Two, it is 1944 and Kate lives in London with a new set of friends one of whom is an American named Claus (Charles) who has German roots. There is a vagueness as to how and why she left Hamburg, then spent time living in France where her husband's family had been from and escaped to London to free herself from the Nazis. Claus had been imprisoned in the past on what appeared to be trumped up charges. Both Kate and Claus had mysterious and complicated past histories each of whom could plausibly explain it away. However, under the current political climate it placed them in jeopardy, given the feelings about anyone with German ancestry or connections. The author manages to create an eery suspense and drama as the lives of these two strangers who become lovers entangle. The reader is taken to a precipice, to a ledge where the author provides a totally surprising and explosive ending which leaves the reader stunned and breathless but completely satisfied. This book is a gem which has many hidden depths and layers that the reader more fully appreciates only at the end. There is a lingering feeling of sadness which remains long after finishing the book. As someone who isn't terribly familiar with the history of either World War I or II, I found the historical elements to be easily woven into the plot and in no way distracting or didactic. The prose is beautiful, the characters are well-developed, and the plot is gripping. I strongly disagree with earlier reviewers who found the two halves of the novel to be disconnected from one another. As far as the claim that the novel is explicit in its descriptions of the horrors of war ---- well, it is, but I found it to be an integral part of the novel's setting and not overkill. The love stories that tie together the two halves of the novel are poignant and real. I highly recommend this novel as a summer read. It will also make an excellent gift to anyone interested in good writing, WWI/II, or love stories. I plan on gifting it multiple times this coming holiday season.

Dope, duplicity, and violence fill this gasser of a novel from a protégé of William S. Burroughs.

Set in the scorched cityscape of the Reagan-era Lower East Side of Manhattan, The Lotus Crew is Stewart Meyer's harrowing yet humorous tale of loyalty and betrayal in the face of heroin addiction. Two street junkies, the introverted Alvira and the gregarious Tommy, team up to spark a street-retailing crew pushing the best heroin in town. In the abandoned buildings and back alleys of an Alphabet City that is as dangerous as the Wild West, the stamp of the Triad crew on a glassine bag of dope means it's a smoker.

The duo is wildly successful until someone counterfeits the Triad seal and triggers a reaction from Tommy that leads to violence - and to a rude awakening for Alvira.

Excellent counterculture narrative By A Customer Good character development begs the questions: where did these people come from and where did they go? Is there a sequel to this book? Character named "Specs" clearly understands that there is more to this story than drug use -- he's seems to be an observer as well as a participant in the story. Who is he before the story begins and what happens to him when the story ends?As a protege of William Burroughs, it seems that Mr. Meyer could tell us more; he has the inside track (no pun intended)as well as the the storytelling skills to tell us more. Would he?

Lotus Crew the real deal By beckett rosset This book is the best thing since sliced bread as far as anything written about the L.E.S. dope scene in the early to mid 80's. Mr. Meyer captures the feel of this hardcore environment with his lean prose and vivid imagery. This book is the son and heir of Burrough's Junky. A must read for anyone interested in this genre.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Electrifying By A Customer This booked rocked my world - gritty, intense, realistic tale of the junk game in New York in the eighties. "Walking the plank" has a whole new meaning now, read the book to understand what I mean. I highly recommend this book to fans of Burroughs, Bukowski and other writers. Stewart Meyer has captured the seedy underbelly of drug culture like nobody else, this book rules!!!

It covers a sad episode in our US history when we "imprisoned" American citizens... who were Japanese. I learned a great deal while being swept away with the very intense dramas that unfolded over a # of decades. Clearly Rubin has his eye on Japanese culture and his heart tuned to love - lost and found. Highly recommended.

By Robin This exciting new novel masterfully portrays the coming of Word War II and its shattering impact upon the shared love, religious beliefs and community bonds of Japanese and American families drawn together through Christian church affiliation in Seattle in the late 1930s. The richly detailed settings include pre-war Seattle, a Japanese-American internment camp in the middle of the remote Idaho desert, Tokyo in the 1960s, and Nagasaki on the fateful day of its nuclear bombing on August 9, 1945, 70 years ago. Harvard emeritus professor of Japanese literature Jay Rubin brings to his storytelling an unrivalled wealth of cultural understanding and learning about Japan, its culture and people, and the unresolved, shared moral legacy of war that no Japanese or American can escape.

A Complex Look at Marriage and Adultery by Henry James

“My idea is this, that when you only love a little you’re naturally not jealous-or are only jealous also a little, so that it doesn’t matter. But when you love in a deeper and intenser way, then you’re in the very same proportion jealous; your jealousy has intensity and, no doubt, ferocity. When however you love in the most abysmal and unutterable way of all – whey then you’re beyond everything, and nothing can pull you down.” ― Henry James, The Golden Bowl

In The Golden Bowl by Henry James, two couples lives are intertwined in family and marital bonds. The Golden Bowl has been adapted into a BBC miniseries and a Merchant Ivory film. This Xist Classics edition has been professionally formatted for e-readers with a linked table of contents. This ebook also contains a bonus book club leadership guide and discussion questions. Review Novel by Henry James, published in 1904. Wealthy American widower Adam Verver and his daughter Maggie live in Europe, where they collect art and relish each other's company. Through the efforts of the manipulative Fanny Assingham, Maggie becomes engaged to Amerigo, an Italian prince in reduced circumstances, but remains blind to his rekindled affair with her longtime friend Charlotte Stant. Maggie and Amerigo marry, and later, after Charlotte and Adam have also wed, both spouses learn of the ongoing affair, though neither seeks a confrontation. Not until Maggie buys the gilded crystal bowl of the title as a birthday present for Adam does truth crack the veneer of propriety. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

72 of 73 people found the following review helpful. A crucial book at a crossroads in American letters, 1905 By A Customer By Ilan MochariSandwiched in American literary time between The Scarlet Letter and The Great Gatsby, The Golden Bowl is plainly influenced by the former and an influence on the latter. In all three books, the plot hinges on an act of adultery. More importantly, in all three books, the act of adultery is never explicitly narrated to us. We learn somehow that the infidelity has occurred, and judge the subsequent behavior of characters in light of the infidelity. There is a tendency in book reviews and literature classes to "boil down" complex works of art into manageable chunks. Suffice it here to say that The Golden Bowl resists reduction marvelously. It's Henry James at his finest, refusing to sugarcoat "love" as an innocent pastime and blessing us with brilliant characters who fully analyze their sophisticated insecurities. Book one (of two) opens with its protagonist, Amerigo, in deep reflection about his imminent marriage to the wealthy Maggie Verver. Why exactly does a rich American beauty who could have whatever man she wants purport to love a penniless, defrocked Italian "Prince?"Make no mistake: The Golden Bowl is not light reading, and any reader who treats it as such will find him or herself backing up and rereading each sentence to capture what was lost. You can't speed through the book, looking for what "happens." You won't find it. Or at least, Henry James won't tell you straight out. James challenges the reader with the onus of judgment. Is your husband having an affair? Chances are that, rather than ask him straight out, you'll beat around the bush and judge whether he is or not by his behavior. No one conveys such tacit social jousting quite like Henry James, and in The Golden Bowl the old master is in peak form. Divided into two books, The Golden Bowl provides a neatly segmented picture of life for a romantic couple both before (Book 1) and after (Book 2) an adultery takes place. Now the book's narrator never actually reveals that Maggie Verver, the second book's protagonist, is "on" to her husband's faithless behavior. Instead, it's something the reader must gather through subtle, nuanced shifts in the comportment and dialogue of the involved characters. One can even make a cogent argument -- based strictly on textual evidence -- that no affair has taken place. The canonical beauty of the book is as much in its narrative style -- one of implicit revelation rather than an omniscient chronicling of events -- as it is in the actual storyline. Where Henry James has evolved from his "Portrait of a Lady" days is in the delivery of the tale. It is as though he is saying, here in his final novel (1905), "Any author worth a grain of salt can give you a straightforward, nineteenth century plot. Here is a different, more elevated manner of story-telling that departs dramatically from anything I've done before." What we get is a work that straddles artistic boundaries, anticipating the oblique narratives of American modernism while subverting the 'and then...' style typical of the previous century's bildungsromans. On top of that, The Golden Bowl is a character-driven masterpiece, whose six characters possess distinguished Shakespearean personalites -- they are hilariously eloquent and fiercely intelligent. But that's de rigeur for a James opus. The whole book, in form and content, shines with what Harold Bloom calls James' "aesthetic eminence" -- stunning turns of phrase that you wish were yours, along with a deft narrative cadence that seamlessly unites scene upon scene into a layered and cohesive whole. The crown jewel in James' vaunted career, The Golden Bowl is a journey in American letters that no accomplished reader should fail to make.

Can one really put the feminine insight of The Portrait of a Lady above the moral conflict of The Wings of the Dove? I loved both those novels, and thought that The Ambassadors was quite good as well. But The Golden Bowl, for me, was another experience altogether.First of all, I found "Bowl" to be the most difficult of James' novels to read. Actually, it was one of the most difficult books I have ever read, period. One must reread many passages to make sure they have the right meaning because the prose is so austere and almost impenetrable. But, once you get to the conclusion, it's more than worth it. You have to stick with this novel right to the end in order to fully appreciate its brilliance. The characters are realized with an intelligence that is rare to find in literature today, and they are written about in such a wonderfully restrained and subtle way. Don't miss this literary triumph, and please don't shy away from it because it is considered a "classic" or because of your possible misconceptions of Henry James. Also, I read that it is being developed for an upcoming film version by Merchant Ivory. If that's true, then moviegoers are in for a treat!

The only one I had real trouble with was The Golden Bowl.I recently reread the novel and reveled in its elegant complexity. (It would be nice to think that the passage of 20 years has brought wisdom and insight that made me a better reader, but the credit belongs to Dorothea Krook's illuminating discussion in The Ordeal of Consciousness in Henry James.)The Golden Bowl is the last, the most demanding, and the most rewarding of James's major novels. Even its immediate predecessors, The Ambassadors and The Wings of the Dove, do not reach its deep examination of the mixed motives, the tangled good and evil, that drive human action and passion. Although he presents his characters' acts and much of what goes on in their heads, James manages in such a way that while Krook believes Adam and Maggie are on the side of the angels, Gore Vidal (who introduces the current Penguin edition) believes they are monsters of manipulation--and (as Krook acknowledges) both views are consistent with the evidence.Much--too much--of these riches of doubt and ambiguity is lost in the Merchant/Ivory/Jhabvala translation to the screen (2001). The movie has some good things, but it could have had many more. Surprised by extraneous material (like the exotic dance), heavy-handed symbolism (the exterior darkness on the day Charlotte and Amerigo find the golden bowl), and needless oversimplifications (Amerigo's talk of "dishonor" to Charlotte, which exaggerates his virtue and his desire to be done with her), I got the sense that nobody involved in the production had read the novel with the care that it requires and rewards. Had they done so, their version could have been really fine--both as a movie and as an invitation to the novel.

"Charming characters, emotion galore, a small town--you're going to love Donna Kauffman!" --Lori Foster

"In seaside Blueberry Cove, Maine, friends are just another word for family, and big-city politics take a backseat to local pride. But the real treasure on these shores is always love... "

When D.C. lawyer Hannah McCrae heads home for her brother's wedding, she's dragging a lot of baggage along with her--and she doesn't mean suitcases. Betrayed personally, and humiliated professionally, the last thing she wants is a new man. That's fine with square-jawed, rugged contractor Calder Blue. He and Hannah may be wildly attracted to one another, but all he wants is to build the town's hotly contested new yacht club and mend a centuries-old family feud. Yet thanks to resentments old and new, day after day the pair wind up tangled in each other's business--and maybe soon in each other's arms.

Every bride needs something "blue..".

Includes a delicious wedding cake recipe!

About the Author ""USA Today""bestselling author of the Bachelors of Blueberry Cove series, Donna Kauffman has been gratified to see her books get rave reviews in venues ranging from ""Kirkus Reviews""and ""Library Journal""to ""Entertainment Weekly""and ""Cosmopolitan."" She lives in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in western Virginia, where she is presently applying her crafty DIY skills to decorating her new mountainside abode. Well, when she isn't busy trying to keep the bears from hanging out in her flower and vegetable garden all day and night! With her new Brides of Blueberry Cove series, Donna's been having a blast applying those same restoration and design skills to doing some fictional wedding planning. Of course, if that means haunting all those lovely antique shops and flea markets that are so plentiful in her new neck of the woods, well, it's a sacrifice she's willing to make. When she's not finding ways to take her love of all things rustic and vintage and give them a fabulous seaside, coastal Maine wedding party twist, she loves to hear from readers! A great romance BUT a lot of other stuff too By Lorraine Joy Apparently there is an entire Blueberry Cove series but this is my first book in the series and my first book by this author. I can tell you that you don’t need to read any of the other books to follow this one so if you are concerned, don’t be. I don’t often venture into small town romance because I’m too much of a big city lover so take everything I say with that bias in mind. Plot in super fast rewind: Hannah returns to Blueberry Cove (which I totally imagine to be like Abbot Cove from ‘Murder She Wrote’…yeah yeah, I’m over 30) after some drama in her urban lawyer DC life disrupted her plans of world domination (to which all lawyers aspire). Calder is in Blueberry trying to untangle an ages old family feud involving his family. The two meet during an unceremonious traffic accident and keep meeting on accident/purpose (not sure which) as Hannah prepares for her brother’s wedding in the Cove and Calder keeps waiting for meetings with people who are constantly pushing them back (seriously). There is an immediate attraction between the two and all kinds of erroneous assumptions and defenses start flying in all directions. The bottom line is that Calder wants Hannah and she has to work through her emotional trauma caused by a recent failed (in an epic way) relationship. I really really liked the character depiction of both Calder and Hannah in this book. Calder is the kind of alpha male with a really good heart that gets me every time. He is steady and consistent in his pursuit of Hannah even though his desire for her doesn’t completely make sense to him. Hannah was the best balance of tough, logical and soft that I love in heroines. Hannah had some very reasonable defense mechanisms erected as the result of her life circumstances but they weren’t overplayed in the plot. There was just enough angst on her part to make sense in the context of her experiences but not so much that it became annoying melodrama. I also enjoyed the development of the relationship between Calder and Hannah. I guess I should say that I enjoyed that the relationship was developed. There was insta attraction in this book but there was also dialogue between the main characters as they developed an understanding of each other. Both Calder and Hannah initially misunderstood each other but their actual interactions with each other formed the basis for their relationship. This is great because we the readers get to know the characters and can identify with what draws them together. Now for what I didn’t like so much- there is entirely too much character introspection and too much information about all the subplots in the book. Let’s start with the subplots: there is a wedding, a family feud, an arson, the harbor development, Hannah’s siblings and the townspeople. For each of these subplots, there are several pages dedicated to explaining and exploring them. By the time all is said and done, I estimate that like 30% of the book is devoted to the subplots in the story. My main issue is that the subplots seemed like totally separate stories. I didn’t feel like they did anything to further my understanding of the relationship between Hannah and Calder so you know what that means- you start skimming. The subplots were actually kind of interesting for what they were but if you are reading this book for the romance aspect, there is a real potential to get bored with all the other stuff. Here is a good example, at one point Calder is meeting with the Mayor who gives him insight on the Blue family feud and tells him all about his daughter and her hopes and dreams for life. While I was reading it, I made a note to myself which said “I do NOT care about this.” And that pretty much sums it up. As for the introspection, OMG, Hannah and Calder think way more than I want to know about. There are several sections of the book where there are pages and pages of introspection. That always leads to one thing- boredom. You just don’t want to read about the main characters obsessing over the same issues over and over. Even if we do this in real life, we don’t want to read about it. If you add the long period of introspection to the subplots, like 60% of this book is NOT about the relationship between Hannah and Calder. That’s why I’m going with 3 stars instead of 4 stars. As good as this book was (and it is actually good), not enough of it was about the story that I wanted to be reading.ARC provided by publisher via Netgalley

This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Hannah is running away from her old life in Washington D.C. and has a bang up car accident on the way into her hometown Blueberry Cove, lucky for Hannah, Calder, who is from an old family in the Cove comes to her rescue. Calder and Hannah meet each again and again, there is definitely some hot chemistry between the two…….First Look……This book has a nice small town setting which I like and a family themed story, it seems that Hannah’s story is the first story in this series of three books. The next two books will tell the stories of the other two sisters. I like books that are series that way I can follow-up with the characters from the previous booksSecond Look……This story had a lot going on, there was a wedding being planned, a fire which turned out to be an arson and Calder’s family feud. I would have liked to see the arson and the mystery surrounding it more of the main story second to the romance. In all fairness to the book, I have to say that I am more of a cozy mystery/mystery fan than a romance fan but I do enjoy romance stories.I do plan on reading the next two books in this series and would recommend this book.Would I recommend this book? Definitely!Would I read more books from this author? Yes!

Don't understand any 5 star rating on this book By PB The story centers around a man who returns to the Cove for business and sisters who return for the wedding of their brother. One of the sisters of course meets the man who returns and a relationship ensues add to that an accident and a fire and you have the basics to this book. Well, it seems I may be in the minority, but I did not like this book at all, found it boring and really felt this book was written for a teenager not an adult. There are way too many sub-plots and too many things going on which have little to do with the main story, that take away from the plot, which is hard to define in this book because you have a lot of the other little "stories" being interjected but none of them are developed which makes the reader start "skimming" pages trying to get back to the main plot. I really found one thing extremely annoying that was how the thoughts of Calder and Hannah were put out there for us to read instead of working it into the storyline so readers could get a real feel for the characters.I really feel that if the author had stayed with the main story, the meeting of the 2 characters in a quaint beach town, developed them and their families THEN moved on in other books within the series with more people, more problems etc it would have been a passable beach read, but I still believe that most adults will find the dialogue and thought process in this book juvenile. For readers out there I suggest you try The Husband's Secret by Lianne Moriarty that was an awesome read.In my humble opinion I say forget this one, don't waste your money or your time, hopefully the author will develop a more mature book /story line for adults in her next series.

As a fan of horror narratives and supernatural tales, I really enjoyed Wong’s previous works, like Pinkeye Alley and No Joy, so I was happy to see that A Conspiracy of Bliss continues to deliver. This particular collection features some of my favorite of Wong’s tales so far, like “In the Courtyard,” “Wooden Tongue,” “Free World,” and “Village”. In fact, even though it is the shortest, I would say that this collection is probably the strongest because the stories overall are the most eerie and disturbing of the bunch, which is honestly what I love most about Wong’s writing.
