This is a wonderful comic novel, about philosophy, the nature of art, the beauty of the ordinary, and about quirky, complete, night & day victims of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Two charming, over-anxious, germ-phobic friends, Isaac and Greg take a road trip from Boston to Philadelphia. They are both obsessed with Marcel Duchamp, his art and his ideas, and thus the destination has to be the largest collection of Duchamp in the world, The Philadelphia Art Museum, the actual place “The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even” was to be delivered when it was cracked and broken in shipment. The piece is sometimes known as The Large Glass, and today it sits in the middle of a large gallery proudly displayed in its broken state which Duchamp repaired and then certified had been his intention all along. The two men are driven in a rented disinfected Winnebago by Kelly, a beautiful art scholar who smells like a mixture of lemons and fresh sawdust. They intend to pick up an ancient chocolate grinder, an exact working sculptural copy of one used in a Duchamp painting. Isaac intends to grind his own pure chocolate, which will prevent the build-up or arterial plaque, because his mother died of a stroke. Every action has its own suitable reaction, and then some. Isaac hopes eventually to overcome his devotion to his many obsessions and to re-enter the world, evidently his version of the real world. He is not an unreliable narrator, he is a hyper-reliable narrator, consumed by his own attention and thrilled with the connections he sees everywhere all at once. Of course when he finally gets to the museum he must dress-up as a woman to visit the collection.

The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even: A Novel, by Chris F. Westbury

From Booklist Art, for me, was both the symptom and the cure, explains narrator Isaac, referring to his obsessive-compulsive disorder. After the death of his mother exacerbates his symptoms, Isaac spends months in museums contemplating single objects (punctuated only by bouts of nonstop hand washing). When Greg, an art aficionado and fellow diagnosable from group therapy, convinces Isaac of the perfection of Marcel Duchamp’s ready-mades, they hatch a plan to break from their comfort zones by journeying to see the artist’s modernist masterpiece, The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Joined by Kelly, an indulgent art scholar, and guided by a 58-page plan, the pair commandeers a sterilized Winnebago and launches their aesthetic quest. Along the way, the friends channel Duchamp by restaging his works and embracing chance encounters and connections that are at once beautiful and absurd. Part treatise on art appreciation, part humorous on-the-road tale, neuropsychologist Westbury’s debut novel offers a compelling story about the role art can play to disrupt, delay, and contribute to human engagement with the real world. --Lindsay Bosch

Review "Westbury’s Bride Stripped Bare itself contains many layers. It has, among other elements, a road trip, an unusual love triangle, cross-dressing, anagrams, off-kilter theories of religion, a handmade chocolate grinder, and a see-how-many-balls-I-can-keep-in-the-air comic structure that adds to the novel’s overall buoyancy." —Edmonton Journal"Part treatise on art appreciation, part humorous on-the-road tale, neuropsychologist Westbury’s debut novel offers a compelling story about the role art can play to disrupt, delay, and contribute to human engagement with the real world." —Booklist"It’s a sweet story, and it builds inevitably to a happy ending." —Kirkus"Clever, funny, and fun, and filled with great discussions about art" —BookRiot"Bright aesthetic discussion amid mishap; not just for the college-nostalgic but for anyone who enjoys a rush of ideas while being entertained." —Library Journal, Top Summer Reads 2014"Westbury, a cognitive neuropsychologist at the University of Alberta (Edmonton), has plenty to say about art and attention, about the line between sanity and mental illness, and about the nature of a well-lived life... Westbury's debut is a call to pay attention, and a reminder of the rewards of patience and open eyes." —Barnes & Noble Review

About the Author Chris Westbury is a cognitive neuropsychologist at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. His work focuses on understanding the functional structure and neurological underpinnings of language. This is his first novel.

The author presents us with Isaac, an articulate hero/narrator of great charm and insight, and it is a pleasure to follow Isaac's wandering road trip and his reflections about art and the subtle variations in proportion that mark the boundary between the normal and the insane. (The "diagnosable" insane, our narrator would emphasize.)Our hero/guide literally goes on a road trip, but more importantly he just sort of wanders about inside his own head, picking up and examining and describing the odd bits of mental flotsam and jetsam that he discovers. The book is a little bit about Duchamp and modern art, a bit about friendship, to some degree about the bonds of family love, a touch about obsession, and a great deal about how to bring oneself out of the shadows to become a "doer".If one is so inclined, this book can be read as a reinterpretation of the meaning of, or the intent behind, the Duchamp piece about which the book revolves. Isaac and Greg, unable to cope with the world around them, are driven to Philadelphia to view the Duchamp installation by the beautiful and brilliant Kelly. So we have two OCD bachelors and a beautiful young lady heading off to visit a piece that is traditionally read as a commentary on the sexual tension between the beautiful female and the bachelor males who surround her. Put that in your book club pipe and smoke it.I prefer to enjoy this as a novel, not as the coolest Duchamp art gallery catalogue ever, but that's just me. Either way, much of the book - dialogue, Isaac's monologues, descriptions of the passing scene - are well crafted delights. This is a rich feast and, charming though he may be, Isaac can be a demanding and wearing companion. This did not strike me as a book to devour. It is built for wandering; with its little asides, diversions, wrong turns and dead ends it invites the reader to observe but also to pause and reflect.Mostly, though, this comes off as a light-hearted comic novel that touches on interesting themes in art, science, mental illness, obsession, and hand-sanitizer. That alone is enough to recommend it to me.Please note that I received a free ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

This humorous, educational novel is the story of their journey in a rented Winnebego, driven by their friend Kelly to buy a chocolate grinder. They have so much fun on their journey that they begin to tame some of their more severe OCD tendencies. You grow to like Isaac and how he finds his mother dead in the home they share. I hope Mr. Westbury write more for us to enjoy.

The Restaurant Reviewer, a love story

Originally published on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, The Restaurant Reviewer, a novel, tells a story of lovers, loss, grieving, and healing, and is dedicated to the People of New York City.

Set in lower Manhattan in the wake of 9/11, The Restaurant Reviewer focuses on an old family-owned restaurant, Booths, whose devoted chef and proprietor, Matthias Constantine, has collapsed from a stroke. The novel addresses the question facing his family and friends of whether, and how, his restaurant can survive. The answers explore connections to place, memory, and the passage of time.

The story is narrated by Shaylie Drinan, a restaurant reviewer for a major newspaper, who finds herself drawn inexorably into the conflict at Booths through her lover, Damian Constantine, Matthias’s son. The resolution she brings to the story affirms the goodness of food, the meaning of love.

Matthias Constantine has spent his life preparing and refining the fare at his restaurant, a steakhouse on the Bowery that was founded by his immigrant grandfather and is now a clubhouse for City Hall politicians. His only help in the kitchen, and his avid protégé, is Armand Fenner, who was abandoned to the streets as a child and rescued by Matthias.

Years before Matthias collapsed his wife died in a car crash in front of the restaurant. His son, Damian, witnessed the scene of his mother’s death and took off for the West Coast as soon as he could to get away from the memory. He returned a dozen years later to try to leverage the restaurant’s real estate into lucrative investments for himself. In this plan he enlisted Tally Lee, a powerful politician who first came to Booths as a teenager to work as a waitress, befriended a City Council candidate and bore his daughter, and subsequently rose in Manhattan politics to become a Party boss.

The effects of the stroke leave Matthias Constantine weakened but create the conditions for his restaurant’s renewal. The catalyst for its future is the manager Damian hires to assist his father, a disillusioned doctor who wants to switch careers and hopes to take over Booths one day. The doctor, trying to enhance the restaurant’s image and increase its business, unwittingly turns it into the venue that fosters romance between Matthias’s protégé, Fenner, and Tally Lee’s beloved daughter, Benita, a talented singer. By creating beautiful dishes to please Benita, Fenner brings the restaurant to new heights—and threatens those who would destroy and forget it.

The Restaurant Reviewer weaves the fears, conflicts, hopes and ambitions of its characters into an exploration of what endures in the wake of loss.

Urban Nao Hauser's "The Restaurant Reviewer" opens with a thud, picks itself up, and weaves its way through a fascinating period in recent New York City history, as experienced by a marvelous cast of characters from many walks of life in lower Manhattan. The story revolves around Booth's, an old-time restaurant on The Bowery. Hauser deftly shifts the narrative and timeline from present to past to present again, sharing the backgrounds and experiences of the novel's main characters, as seen through their own eyes and the eyes of others. This makes for a story line that pulls you along in a playful and seductive manner throughout the novel. From the patriarchal Mathias (he of the stroke-induced thud that opens the book) to his handsome, brooding "kalamata-eyed" son Damian and all the other characters who pass through Booth's doors at one time or another, the author paints pictures of hard-working, passionate people striving to do what's right for themselves and for others. One of the beauties of this book is the disparate group of characters who populate the narrative--virtually all coming from widely variant backgrounds yet interacting in colorful and passionate ways. There's the street urchin who evolves into a top-rate chef, the neighborhood scruff who claws her way to the top ranks of Manhattan's political elite, the dermatologist who throws it all away for a constantly shifting dream of making it in the restaurant business--the list goes on. These are characters who are not soon forgotten, which is always a sign of good fiction. Then there's the food. Hauser's own background in the culinary arts and food writing shines through in her steady stream of pitch-perfect depictions--from the primal, aged cuts of steak pan-fried daily at Booth's for the lunch crowd to the rarified tables of Manhattan's latest, trendiest eateries to the bustling, open-air ethnic markets dotting New York's Lower East Side--the city's culinary riches are offered up and praised by an author who truly knows whereof she speaks. This is a great read for those who love food, those who love New York, and those who crave a story well told by a gifted storyteller in the genre of culinary fiction.

By good reads I had expected ‘The Restaurant Reviewer’ to be an easy, light read but it’s so much better than that! It has depth, it has soul, and it has some terrific writing!i was totally hooked by this book’s engaging plot and perfectly drawn characters, to the point where i could barely put it down. At times the author’s profound words about the big themes in life (like love and death) moved me to tears with their truthful simplicity. At other times, the author would describe the most mundane of human activities using language so rich with metaphors and creative turns of phrase as to make me smile with delight. Highly recommended!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Restaurant Reviewer By J. Molineux Nao Hauser's novel, The Restaurant Reviewer, reads like a poem or a bittersweet song as the story unfolds and the characters reveal themselves. As is the tendency of all this author's character creations, (recall the cast of the hilarious and enduring Bronoff's Rules), the striking personalities within this novel stick close and affect us long after the reading.I was moved by the author's beautifully woven-in ode to her city, highlighting the cultural and political landscape which frames the characters' journey through a "food life"--a life so full and real, it is almost another mystical character in itself. The power of preparing, eating and interpreting dishes, the art of serving meals, and the business of dining, fuels the characters' connections to each other, to their destinies, and nourishes their revelations to us--the hungry reader! The once destitute Fenner comes to Booths Restaurant; how he eats, heals, and ultimately discovers his gift through his attachment to Matthias and his love for Benita is deeply touching. Also highly enjoyable and satisfying is dermatologist Stanley's personal and professional reboot via his commitment to Booths--both humorous and painful, I was inspired by his self-discovery as he explored the business of food.I loved this book--the intriguing culinary descriptions, the novel's graceful embrace of the struggle for survival and for love, and its final affirmation of the strength of goodness. It felt so big and deep--the reading filled me up like a holiday meal!!

I am a former minister of the Christian Fellowship Church, and knew Randy personally when he was stationed in Norfolk. Her detail is painfully accurate in how CFCMI mistreated the men who joined their organization under the premise of a closer walk with God and living the end time message. There are numerous blogs and message boards out there where ex-members shared what they went through, but rarely do we see an account from a family member who suffered needlessly thanks to the group's mind control tactics.I have shared this book with my mom; both my parents also know firsthand the damage this bunch did, and Geneva's account will be a useful tool in helping other family members gain better understanding and find healing.

Tear-Jerking Story About Escaping a Supposedly Christian Cult By Conny Title: Rescuing RandyAuthor: Geneva PaulsonPublisher: WestBow PressISBN: 978-1-4497-7029-7What would you do if your own child was caught up in a religious cult and you had no clue on where to start or how to get him or her out of it? Would you let it happen, hoping and praying for the loved one to see how controlling it is or would you take any possible, painful action to force a change? Geneva Paulson and her family went to the utmost extreme in her true, tear-jerking story, "Rescuing Randy - A Family Determined to Rescue Their Son from a Cult."This one hundred and eighty-five page paperback book has young man in white Navy dress smiling in the foreground with a more sullen muted picture of the same boy in the background on the front cover. Due to its topics of cults, homosexuality and mental abuse, it would be targeted toward adults who either are going through or want to know more about manipulation by supposed pastors who take advantage of their flock. With its Christian emphasis, it relies heavily on Biblical verses, prayer and God's direction. In the late 1980s, young Randy Paulson was a great kid, growing up on a dairy farm in Minnesota where he went to church, was baptized and loved learning about God and Jesus. At seventeen he joined the Navy and served on the USS Ticonderoga, an Aegis missile cruiser. While at port, he visited the Christian Fellowship Church International pastored by L.R. Davis and felt he had found friendship, stability and a stronger relationship with Christ. He was so wrong: a little more than three years later, he was caught up in a cult run by an influential, sexual abusive, controlling false teacher who was later convicted and sent to prison. With the unconditional love of his parents, family, relatives and friends, a covert plan was formed when Randy visited home at Christmas where they literally abducted and sneaked him into a "safe house," a remote cabin in the woods, for an intervention lead by an experienced deprogrammer, his assistant who was in the same cult and his supportive family. As the writer explains her motherly pain, the family's emotional suffering and the nuances of cults, their leaders and how they control their subjects, one is drawn into the breaking down of Randy's personality, perception and thinking. In the week of obstinacy, rebuttal and trauma, Randy goes from an unemotional, impersonal shell of a man to "snapping" and slowly realizing he never wants to return to the power-gripping church. In addition to learning a cult's tricks of affecting and influencing another through denying sleep and nutrition along with handling all finances, the reader learns how the process after deprogramming can lead to "floating" and "grogging" as the person returns to reality. This book is a must for anyone who has his or her own loved one in such a dire difficulty and cannot fathom or understand how a cult works or how to help that person escape the addictive hold the cult has on them. With its strong Biblical theme, it really was a "God-thing" how Randy changed, being dedicated to God in the proper perspective instead of a twisted, evil man. Through Randy and his mother's book, they can help others and their families in the same sad predicament.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A mother's worst nightmare By Patti Poplin As a mother of two sons close to the age Randy was when he became involved with the cult, I felt the writer's story deep in my own heart. As I followed her journey; watching her young son go off to serve our country, losing him to such an unexpected evil and then fighting with all her power to get him back again - my heart broke for her and her family. This is truly a must read for anyone who knows that "go to any lengths" love for a child. A wonderful, inspiring story that proves love and faith will prevail.

First published by the author in 1895, The German Pietists of Provincial Pennsylvania narrates the history of the early Germans of various sects and congregations who settled in Pennsylvania starting at the end of the seventeenth century, with a particular focus on a group of German Pietist mystics who emigrated to America in 1694 to pursue the freedom to practice their religion. The book details Pietism’s origins in Europe, Pietists’ beliefs and practices, and the Pietists’ relationships with other religious groups, like the Quakers, Lutherans, and Jansenites. The book is a product of meticulous archival work and research, and it includes numerous references to and facsimile pages from rare source material. Sachse also provides a comprehensive look at the activities of well-known figures including Johannes Kelpius, Daniel Falkner, Johann Jacob Zimmerman, and Benjamin Furly.

By Stacey Swift Unlike before where we lived in the countryside, now our home is already located in an urban area where houses are concrete standing next to each other giving us limited space for gardening. Hence, I am looking for a reference material that would give me tips on an ideal gardening when living in the city. I should say I found the right one! After reading the book, I realized that gardening should be fun and it's not as hard as it may seem. If you'll look at it and do it as a hobby, one can definitely enjoy it and in a couple of weeks, everyone could have clean, organic vegetables, fruits and herbs to themselves. I appreciate that the book included tips from garden planning up to its execution. It shared samples on how to put up or design your garden, what to plant, how to group the plants, and the like. I am interested to the book's inclusion of indoor gardening which caught my attention. It may sound tedious to have gardening inside our home right now but I know it's going to be worth it if the plan is well executed. I am excited to realize this in the coming weeks! My mom has become as interested as I've been in making this happen.Thank you, Anna, for this good reference material! This will definitely help me with our renovation in the coming days.

By Steve Gardening, most especially home gardening as the author rightly stated is very important to man; both to self, to neighbors and to the society at large. Sometimes all it takes is just decide that you are going to start a little farm and voila! your garden have started with you buying seeds and tilling the soil. But it can get more than that, there are knowledge of plants, seeds, fruits and anything else we can plant that we should know of.There are also various types of gardening that exist and each of these gardens, though the same concept, are treated differently from each other. Well, to be honest I did not know that until now. This book explains the various types of gardening and ways in which one can start a mini garden of their own.

I will never know this new branch of gardening if I haven't purchased this book. It is very exciting to learn that plants can grow with artificial light. Hence, I can do a lot of experimentation regarding this matter. With a very limited backyard space, this is quite an opportunity for me to grow plants indoor. The methods and requirements for indoor gardening are also included in this book. Although the main focus of this book is how to grow organic vegetables, fruits and herbs in our own backyard, the idea of indoor gardening simply intrigues me,

By Barbara McMahon Scanlan Three Women is a treasure trove for theatres and actors looking for challenging roles in Parks' portraits of three iconic women. The voices are unique, often witty, and yet each bears the burden of success linked to failure. None more so than Zelda Fitzgerald, flapper, writer, painter, demented. The plays can be produced from bare stage to imaginative expansion, still the playwright offers an exceptional gift to players, theatres, and audiences.Read it, and if you can, see it. Putting them at the center of a play is a brilliant way to deliver a great deal about them effortlessly. We hear them make their own case for who they really are. Did Parker really say that heterosexual sex was not normal only common? Parks provides no citations, but has clearly and deeply immersed himself in each one of these unique literary figures. He caught the head of all three women's voices perfectly. Well done, Mr. Parks! As a playwright, you are the act to beat!!Phyllis Theroux, author

Ebook PDF Pinkies: stories, by Shane Hinton

In Shane Hinton's debut collection, gritty Florida realism collides with the absurd, and paternal fears materialize in surreal scenarios. A young Shane Hinton catalogs his dead pets. A father-to-be Shane Hinton combats roving pythons in the suburbs. Yet another Shane Hinton throws a barbeque for all the Shane Hintons he's met on the Internet and fears his wife might leave him for one.

Hinton, a father of three, inserts himself into these fictions as a way of confronting personal anxieties. ''It's cliché to say that one thinks of writing as therapy,'' he says, ''but I think these stories represent an exorcism of intrusive thoughts.''

In ''Intersection,'' a father struggles to protect his frightened family from cars that keep crashing into their home, while in ''Driving School'' he's imagined as a vehicular menace. ''Fumes'' portrays a father crippled by a rabid dog, bedridden and unable to play catch with his son or help his wife pay the ever-growing medical bills.

A sharp commentary on the mundanity and absurdity of modern life, Hinton's stories explore the horrors of death, abandonment and insurance agents with spare prose and deadpan humor. The world of Pinkies is a terrifying and hilarious introduction to an unflinching new voice.

Pinkies: stories, by Shane Hinton

Review ''If Kafka got it on with Flannery O'Connor, Pinkies would be their love child.'' --Lidia Yuknavitch, author of The Small Backs of Children

''Shane Hinton's Pinkies is weird, and it is wonderful. This debut collection in which the everyday is always extraordinary reminds me of fiction by Joy Williams and Mary Robison, and also of movies by Charlie Kaufman. If that sounds like ridiculously high praise, then good: Pinkies deserves it.'' -- Brock Clarke, author of The Happiest People in the World

''Shane Hinton's fiction is the visceral kind that you feel with your whole body, and it makes me want to cry through my laughing and cringing. I don't know a better compliment to give a writer.'' Jeff Parker, author of Where Bears Roam The Streets --Reviews

''Shane Hinton's writing is terrifically smart and coolly cerebral, and full of quietly reserved, understated power. He treats the despair of the essential human condition with strength and dignity. A remarkable new young American writer, whose talent is likely to become progressively more vital and profound in the years to come.'' --Mikhail Iossel, author of Every Hunter Wants to Know

''The stories in Shane Hinton's Pinkies wriggle with volatility. Bracingly unpredictable, they'll slip out of your hands if you're not careful. Here is all the absurdity and latent dread of life, but funnier, stranger, more potent.''--Kevin Moffett, author of The Silent History --More Reviews

About the Author Shane Hinton holds an MFA from the University of Tampa. He lives in the winter strawberry capital of the world. His fiction has appeared in Word Riot, The Butter, Dead Mule School, Atticus Review & elsewhere.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Hilarious, absurdist stories about fatherhood By Ryan Pinkies is a unique book about everyday fears of fatherhood and manhood, only played out in nightmarish, absurdist stories that ring true on an emotional level--feelings of helplessness, anger, sorrow, but also joy. Told in a straightforward, deadpan style reminiscent of Tom Drury, the stories are hilarious, visceral, and dark all at once. A must read for weird and/or unconventional and/or book-loving dads.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Will Leave a Lasting Impression By Robyn Ringler I called 911. "What's your emergency?" a woman answered. "I ran myself over with the tractor." These lines, like so many others in this book gave me the giggles because this character-driven collection is just too funny, tragic, beautiful. The lines are from Shane Hinton's story "Never Trust the Weather Man, which delighted me. "All the Shane Hintons," gripping and filled with irony, made me wonder who all the "Robyn Ringlers" are. It is hard to believe "Pinkies" is a debut collection. Hinton so deftly infuses each story with the absurd, the disgusting, and the glorious making it impossible to put down. The crisp, funny, disturbing, and hilarious tone of this book will leave a lasting impression.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Indie Lit Gem By John Henry Fleming There’s a wonderfully dark precision to these stories. Columns of simple declarative sentences march the reader into the absurdities of rural Florida, where cars and bodies come crashing through houses, pythons prey on children, and misplaced lawnmower keys turn up in cysts. Hinton doesn’t waste the reader’s time; the stories are efficient, short, and fast-paced without ever feeling rushed. You could read the entire book in a couple of hours, except that the many surprising little explosions are best savored one at a time and replayed in slow-mo. If you want to see why the indie press world is so important to the present and future of contemporary lit, this book is an excellent place to start.

Lawyer Claire Dunning used to be able to see the tip of Manhattan from the window of her high-rise office. But after her married employer’s financial fraud is discovered—along with their secret affair—she moves from New York to a small town in North Carolina to start over, taking a job defending inmates condemned to death row.

Her first client, Grace, is a woman sentenced to death for the murder of her two-year-old daughter. After several years behind bars, Grace’s sanity is in question, and her story has been muddled by time, too much medication, and the brutal effects of isolation. Still, Claire tries to uncover the obscured details of the child’s tragic death and prove her client’s innocence—all while attempting to forget her own complicated past. Though try as she might, Claire cannot help but ask: Once the damage is done, is the question of guilt or innocence still relevant?

Review

"Once I started reading A Trial for Grace I stayed up all night so I could finish it. This is a smart, well told story about crime and guilt and the lengths to which people will go simply to know and feel loved. This is a deeply moving story and Jessica Pishko is just one hell of a talent." —Victor LaValle, author of The Devil in Silver

Deep and Engaging By Brandon Marrs This was an engaging read, and I especially enjoy the insider's point of view--even though this is was fiction, clearly the author knows her subject well. Definitely recommended for fans of crime fiction, legal thrillers and the southern gothic genre.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not what expected By Kindle Customer A Trial for Grace is not what I expected. It is not the normal lawyer story where a lawyer miraculously solves a crime and in turn frees his client. This story focuses more on internal demons and what they can drive you to do

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Yes, a "legal thriller," but much more too By Jamie Bennett Full disclosure: I was in a writing workshop with the author and provided feedback on a very early version of this story. That said, I am so impressed with how Pishko developed the short story I first read. The finished work has so much more complexity and emotion...and that's starting with what I thought was a very strong story. The easy label for this novella might be "legal thriller," however the moment I say that I feel uneasy, like I'm not doing this work justice. It starts in the legal mode, but quickly becomes much more personal. Soon religious and even supernatural elements enter the picture. That may sound ridiculous, but the author makes it work. At the center of the story is the problematic character of Claire, so flawed, yet searching for redemption. Pishko has taken the classic trope of the flawed investigator, a staple of film noir and detective fiction, and given it a new spin that brings in the South, the Iraq War, the 2008 financial collapse, race in America, parenthood, and more. There are a few points where the language is a little hackneyed and warranted one more editor's review, however the plot surprises and the emotional depth this novella conveys more than makes up for those technical concerns. A moving story that goes deeper and deeper into two women's lives, with a surprisingly cathartic ending.

There isn't a lot of in-depth detail, but then again, you don't really need that when you are brand new to gardening. It would be nice if the author had included pictures of some of the home-made equipment described in this book. While most of it (like cut open milk bottles) are straight forward, some things (like a gardening claw) would be easier to create with a visual guide.Overall, I think this book is a good intro to gardening.

This is written in the form of letters, all from a young woman who is jilted to the jilting man (who won't stop writing to her). The last letter is somehow heartbreaking... I found it a wonderful read.
