Lawyer Claire Dunning used to be able to see the tip of Manhattan from the window of her high-rise office. But after her married employer’s financial fraud is discovered—along with their secret affair—she moves from New York to a small town in North Carolina to start over, taking a job defending inmates condemned to death row.

Her first client, Grace, is a woman sentenced to death for the murder of her two-year-old daughter. After several years behind bars, Grace’s sanity is in question, and her story has been muddled by time, too much medication, and the brutal effects of isolation. Still, Claire tries to uncover the obscured details of the child’s tragic death and prove her client’s innocence—all while attempting to forget her own complicated past. Though try as she might, Claire cannot help but ask: Once the damage is done, is the question of guilt or innocence still relevant?

Review

"Once I started reading A Trial for Grace I stayed up all night so I could finish it. This is a smart, well told story about crime and guilt and the lengths to which people will go simply to know and feel loved. This is a deeply moving story and Jessica Pishko is just one hell of a talent." —Victor LaValle, author of The Devil in Silver

Deep and Engaging By Brandon Marrs This was an engaging read, and I especially enjoy the insider's point of view--even though this is was fiction, clearly the author knows her subject well. Definitely recommended for fans of crime fiction, legal thrillers and the southern gothic genre.

It is not the normal lawyer story where a lawyer miraculously solves a crime and in turn frees his client. This story focuses more on internal demons and what they can drive you to do

Yes, a "legal thriller," but much more too By Jamie Bennett Full disclosure: I was in a writing workshop with the author and provided feedback on a very early version of this story. That said, I am so impressed with how Pishko developed the short story I first read. The finished work has so much more complexity and emotion...and that's starting with what I thought was a very strong story. The easy label for this novella might be "legal thriller," however the moment I say that I feel uneasy, like I'm not doing this work justice. It starts in the legal mode, but quickly becomes much more personal. Soon religious and even supernatural elements enter the picture. That may sound ridiculous, but the author makes it work. At the center of the story is the problematic character of Claire, so flawed, yet searching for redemption. Pishko has taken the classic trope of the flawed investigator, a staple of film noir and detective fiction, and given it a new spin that brings in the South, the Iraq War, the 2008 financial collapse, race in America, parenthood, and more. There are a few points where the language is a little hackneyed and warranted one more editor's review, however the plot surprises and the emotional depth this novella conveys more than makes up for those technical concerns. A moving story that goes deeper and deeper into two women's lives, with a surprisingly cathartic ending.
