By Amazon Customer I can't just say that my house was filled with clutter but reminders of cherished moments and memories that I didn't want to lose. The stuff was neither comforting nor relaxing but so overwhelming. After reading the book I tried to get rid of them one after the other. In the beginning I was skeptical about throwing them away but after starting to do so, so many ideas started sprouting in my head about redecorating or starting DIY projects or trying to keep myself busy with things that interests me. I found the strength to do it from the authors comforting style of writing. I hope my active participation in my latest actives help lose some weight as well. I appreciate it.

By TuMaisPlaise Happily married man feels suddenly fatigued at the Christmas dinner he and his new wife have given on their return from their honeymoon. He goes upstairs to lie down and realizes as he watches himself sleeping that he has died! He must now solve rhe mystery of who murdered him to save his wife from being convicted. Why was this gem never made into a movie?!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Charming whodunit By Paper or Kindle This is a ghost story and a whodunit, and - having been written a long time ago - a charming period piece. There's no sex, no graphic violence, no profanity...just good writing, good manners, gentle humor, and many plot twists in a short novel, or novella. Mr. Brenton finds himself deceased on Christmas Eve, and disgruntled at being a witness to the world without being able to affect it in any way. He encounters various other people in the afterlife, most of whom are quite happy with their lot (and an ingenious explanation is offered for Hell). But his main concern is his wife, a beautiful young woman who is promptly charged with his murder. Despite being advised to stay out of earthly affairs, he decides to clear his wife's name and find his killer. It's a quick and delightful read, and I highly recommend it!

Must Read Melancholy Romance By Bubba_Holtzkopf Wow...This book had me saying wow early on, and perhaps this was the first sign that I was in the presence of significant literature. Basically, George Eliot (literature buffs know this is Mary Anne Evans) strikes you in 'The Lifted Veil' immediately with a somber punch worthy of Edgar Allen Poe, followed by drama, romance, and a hint of the mystic. The tone remains constant in it's dark mood, but this did little to dampen my enthusiasm as a reader. Already this book has climbed into my top 20 short stories involving romance.I really would hate to spoil your reading of this great tale with spoilers, but suffice it to say the allusion of the title is referring to the marital veil primarily, and not the veil of death, although that could be also intended on a lesser note. So, basically, I would consider this a great read for anyone ever contemplating marriage, as a cautionary tale. It really does have some good insight into that, as well as the 'pecking order' of family relationships.Overall, a period romance with a very personal, very somber, slightly mystic and very male feel to it, which distinguishes it greatly.Highly recommended.

A shy rich man with a weak, sickly, poetical nature expects to die very soon from a heart condition in 1850. He doesn't expect any of his three servants to respond to his bell for help because he understand people and knows that they are involved in their own affairs. He uses these moments alone to tell his life story. He realized that he had unique abilities when he was young. He had visions of the future, what people will do and say, long before they do or say it. He also had the gift of insight. He could understand people's character and pierce the veil of their faces and false conduct. Yet, he couldn't understand Bertha for many years. Bertha was a thin and beautiful girl, a year older than he, with whom he fell in love. She could be charming. Yet, she was self-centered, negative, heartless, satirical, sarcastic, opinionated, vain, and loved power, but he saw none of this. He was nineteen and she twenty. She was engaged to his brother who was twenty-six. She admitted to him that she didn't love his brother. But he was in ecstasy with her and saw no faults. He even ignored a vision that he was married to her and she mistreated him. His brother died in an accident and he married Bertha without knowing if she loved him, although she said she did. After some years of marriage, when his father died, he was suddenly able to see what his wife Bertha truly was, that she despised him. Then life became unbearable, as he foresaw in his vision. He noticed a strange relationship between Bertha and her servant. Then, when the servant was dying, his friend, a doctor, told him that the servant would expire that night and asked for permission from him to insert blood into her artery after she died to see what happens. She died, the blood was inserted, she came back to life, turned to Bertha, who just entered the room, and yelled at her, "You mean to poison your husband...the poison is in the black cabinet...I got it for you." Then she died again, and he separated from Bertha after dividing his property with her, equally. Reflecting back at the servant's resurrection, he asks, "Is this what it is to live again...to wake up with our unsatiated thirst upon us, with our unuttered curses rising to our lips, with our muscles ready to act out their half committed sins?" Can this story be read as a parable, a commentary on marriage, that men are unable to unveil the character of their wives' feelings, even though they can understand other people, that love blinds?

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Strange By Katie Prestwich This is a short story and is very different from anything else I've read of George Eliot's. It's a little bit of a horror story with no characters to truly like. The feeling of it reminds me of The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Henry Drummond (1851 –1897) was a Scottish evangelist, writer and lecturer. In 1877 he became lecturer on natural science in the Free Church College, which enabled him to combine all the pursuits for which he felt a vocation. Because of the low Kindle price, I took a chance on an author I didn't recognize. But what a surprise: I found an accomplished and elegant writer, and a treasure that I'll want to revisit many times. I'm buying the paperback version too, so I can keep it in my bookshelves with other much-loved and often-read books!The premise is original: an imaginary land created in great detail by a little girl and her father, as a way to distract Becky from the pains and terrors of dealing with leukemia and its treatment. It's touching, as the father and daughter share their nightly stories about Tamarisk and its history, geography, and inhabitants both human and otherwise. Becky grows into adolescence, and the plants and animals of Tamarisk become less Disneylike and more creative. When her parents divorce, not amicably, Becky's time with Chris, her dad, is limited to the usual weekends-and-one-night-a-week arrangement. Her anger with Chris for leaving "the family" makes her refuse any more Tamarisk collaboration. Becky's illness is in remission, and she does her best to live the life of a normal fourteen-year-old. Meanwhile, Chris grieves at their emotional separation.Then we discover that Tamarisk has a life of its own. The fantasy land has continued to develop even in the absence of further creation from Becky and Chris! The author's ability to portray a teenaged girl's emotions, her strengths and her fears, is uncanny.Chris's uncomplicated love for his daughter, his absorption in their shared creative experience, and his fears about her illness and his loss of her in more ways than one are so clearly drawn that we feel them with him.After reading BLUE, I visited Aronica's website [...] to learn more about the author and his work. I couldn't agree more with his statement that "(w)hether (readers) are reading for entertainment or illumination, they want writers to pull them into the writer's world and for the writer to make that world a place where the reader can live for a while." I truly enjoyed living for a little while in the land of Tamarisk. Please read BLUE: it's one of those books that will stay with you for ages.

Good book about a father, child, mother and a divorce By CADiver SOME GENERAL SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW: I read this book based on the reviews already here on Amazon and for the most part I agree that its a good book that brings you along well. The father and child are well developed as characters, although the father has the most exposure and growth throughout the novel. The fantasy land created by father and daughter to help the infant daughter escape from her pain during chemotherapy returns when the daughter's cancer returns some years later - the two are tied together in an obvious way. However, the story makes the obvious still wonderful to read. I do have to say, however, that portions of the novel describing the fantasy land were sometimes over done and I felt them to be irrelevant to the story - I found myself losing interest in the story in these chapters. I was more interested in how the father grew throughout the story and it would have been nice to see the mother also develop more in the story - she was portrayed as a fairly stubborn woman who distrusted her ex-husband's motives and only one time did the fact that the daughter's best interest wasn't at heart brought up (when the daughter states as such).Overall, its a good story, the general plot reminded me of Pan's Labyrinth, although the fact that the quilt turns blue at the end suggests that Tamarisk is, indeed, a real place.

Anderson Generally, I like this type of story line but something here was just incredibly slow moving and I kept feeling like something was completely missing. It just has no depth and no believability. I gave up reading at about 35%, which is rare for me - I almost always finish every book I start reading. I read, on average, 3-4 fiction books per week and I can probably count on one hand the number I've not finished over the years.I think it has potential but clearly, it's missing the mark and I'm glad I got it when it was free.

37 of 37 people found the following review helpful. More great stuff by an underrated Victorian novelist By Robert Moore PHINEAS FINN is a book of many virtues and one unfortunate flaw. The flaw lies in the ending, of which I can say nothing here without giving away a bit of the plot. Let me just say that the ending is a bit of a "tack on." Trollope himself confessed in his AUTOBIOGRAPHY that he botched the ending, and explains that when he decided to write a second novel starring Phineas Finn, he awkwardly had to correct the mistakes he made in the ending of the previous book.The virtues of the book lie in part in its presentation of the social complexities of the British upper class in 1860s. While a political history of the period could explain the various ins and outs of the major pieces of legislation dealt with at the time, Trollope shows us how many individuals at the time actually felt about these issues from the inside. In this way, Trollope performs a service that no historian ever could. Virtually all the major political figures of the time, from Gladstone to Disraeli appear under thinly veiled aliases.But the true heart of the book is Trollope's great characters. I absolutely love Jane Austen. She is one of my two or three favorite writers. But sometimes I find the enormous propriety of her characters to be a tad tiring. In these way her characters, as magnificent as they otherwise might be, sometimes seem a little less than fully human. Trollope's characters, on the other hand, often fail to act with complete propriety. They do improper things, and feel improper emotions. Our hero falls in love with one woman, then another, feels attraction to another, and falls in love with yet another, and in general fails in his role as a great romantic hero. A woman marries someone she doesn't love, yet retains feelings for another, and suffers from the threat of a bad marriage. Another woman is attracted to two men, and must decide which. Two close friends love the same woman. I find all this emotional complexity to be extremely compelling.Trollope's most compelling and interesting characters are nearly all female. In the book, Lord Chiltern seems cardboardish and unbelievable, the title character likable but not terribly vivid. But whenever Lady Laura, or Madame Goesler, or Violet Effingham take the stage, the novel comes to life. This is not unique to this novel. In nearly all his books, Trollope's most compelling characters are female.If we could give half stars, I would give this one four and a half stars because of the weak ending. But I will stick with five rather than four, partly because the rest of the book easily makes up for the weakish ending, and one can view the excellent PHINEAS REDUX as the real ending of the novel. Either way, I heartily recommend the novel.

32 of 34 people found the following review helpful. Unlucky in Love, Unlucky in Politics, but Irrepressible By James Paris Recently, a personal tragedy resulted in a rare hiatus in my reading. In attempting to return to normal, I found the only author that suited (and soothed) me was Anthony Trollope. As an English major at Dartmouth, I never encountered his works, and none were on the required reading list; yet now, there are few writers who can "embed" me in their world so easily as Trollope.This is the second of the Palliser series of six novels, the first of which was CAN YOU FORGIVE HER? Although it is not a prerequisite to understanding PHINEAS FINN, I recommend that readers start at the beginning, so that they have some idea of British parliamentary politics in the mid 19th century and the characters of Plantagenet Palliser, his wife Lady Glencora and their circle.To begin with, there was at that time no monetary recompense for being a member of the House of Commons. The assumption was that: (1) the member was independently wealthy or (2) the member had a day job which paid his bills. This becomes an overriding issue in the novel.Enter Phineas Finn, an engaging Irishman, who gives up the practice of law to run for an Irish seat in the House -- much to the consternation of his friends and relatives who worry how he is to make ends meet. He joins in with a group of Liberal politicians centered around Lord Beresford and his beautiful daughter, Lady Laura Standish. No sooner does Phineas get up the courage to propose to her than he finds he has been beaten to the punch by a wealthy Scottish member, who happens to be a dour and rigid Presbyterian.Next he targets Violet Effingham, who has an on-again, off-again relationship with Lord Chiltern, the brother of Lady Laura. In targeting Violet, Phineas runs up against the choleric Chiltern, whose "red hair is no lie," to quote one of my favorite lines in THE QUIET MAN. The two actually fight a duel across the Channel on a Belgian beach with no serious injory to either party. But Violet makes up her mind for Lord Chiltern, and Phineas is out in the cold again.As Phineas eventually makes it into the Treasury, which does carry some salary, he meets a beautiful wealthy Jewess named Mme Max Goesler, who has some feelings for him. Unfortunately, he had fallen under the tutelage of Mr. Monk, another Liberal politican who runs up against the prevailing political winds in the house. Not only does Phineas become a victim for his principles, but the Liberals are voted out; and Phineas is out of a job and flat broke.He returns to Ireland, marries an old childhood sweetheart, and gets a sinecure position in Cork as the Tories busily redraw the political map under Disraeli (called Daubeny in the novel).In addition to being a charmer -- though a bit feckless at times -- Phineas finds himself liked wherever he goes. Mind you, not enough to nab a beautiful, wealthy wife -- but there is a sequel to come called PHINEAS REDUX, which I am reading now, in which Phineas makes a comeback in his old haunts.As in all of my favorite Trollope novels, there are the obligatory fox hunting scenes, including one in which Phineas helps save Lord Chiltern, whose horse rolls over on him. He even saves the life of Mr Kennedy, Lady Laura's husband, by driving away some muggers. There is something sunny about the title character, and this quality shines throughout the novel.Anthony Trollope wrote some 47 novels: This one is one of the best, and will certainly make for an enjoyable read.

The Lady That's Known as Max By Buce The chances are that "Phineas Finn" will not be the first or the second or even the third Trollope novel that you read. Several Barsetshire novels and "The Way We Live Now" are likely to get pride of place. This is probably fair enough. But that fact says more about the merits of the other books than of any defect in "Phineas Finn." It isn't perfect, but it is a very satisfying novel, indeed - perhaps the best "political" novel since Disraeli's "Sybil," It is "political," that is, not in the sense that it tackles big issues, as "Sybil" does - "Phineas Finn" gives a once-over to voting rights, tenant rights and the Irish but it's all somewhat perfunctory. No: it is "political" in the sense that it is about the lives and fortunes of a public man, and of those who offer help or hindrance on the way.The core elements of the plot are fairly familiar: callow youth sets out to conquer the world and finds out that it's trickier than it looks. Impetuous young woman enters into marriage full of high hopes only to find out that she is stuck with a bad deal. But then, you don't read Shakespeare for plot. I wouldn't say that Trollope is Shakespeare. Still, it is impressive how much by way of character and situation both writes can milk out of a structure that is almost haphazard.Other commentators have also noted that the ending to "Phineas Finn" is weak, but I don't see that as a crippling vice: I'm hard put to think of a really good novel whose ending is not weak.One of the many notable facts about the cast of characters is its great range: we have the home folk in Ireland. We have a marvelous portrait of Finn's landlord, the law-copyist, and his employer, the successful barrister - in each case, along with their wives. We have a narrow-minded country squire and a feckless young playboy. And we have a sketch, brief and incomplete but still convincing, of the grandest peer in the realm.Aside from the sheer breadth of reach, the other thing to be said about the cast is the extraordinary range of interesting women. Phineas, devil that he may be, catches the fancy of at least one back home in Ireland and three more in London. Trollope is often good with women and here in particular he shows remarkable sympathy and comprehension of what they are up against. And not least of the three is, of course, the remarkable Madame Max Goesler, who is surely in contention for recognition as the most remarkable Trollope character at all-for a lady named Max with a touch of a moustache, she is a Victorian sexpot.It would be fun to read this in comparison with Henry Adams' "Democracy" another novel of politics in more or less the same period, though on another continent. Meantime, I'm clearing time to read the rest of Trollope's "political" novels, in the hope that he maintains the high standard that he has set here.

The Classic Roots of American Thought By Fibonacci Dr. Charles Elliot, then president of Harvard University, used to tell people in his speeches that the elements of a liberal arts education could be obtained by reading 15 minutes a day from classic books that would fit on a five foot bookshelf. A publisher took him up on his challenge and asked him to identify the books that would have to go on that shelf. Thus was born the "Harvard Classics" and "classics" is a good choice for these books. They form the foundation of thought that went into the development of our nation and are among the best, most thoughtful, books ever written. Ben Franklin's autobiography is a perennial favorite as he reveals the strategies that made him the founding genius of our country. John Woolman was a Quaker minister and among the first to sound the clarion call against slavery and cruelty to animals.Finally, William Penn, the first governor of what is now Pennsylvania, was imprisoned for several years and wrote "Fruits of Solitude" during that time. Clearly his days of quiet gave him a clarity of thought that serves this book with great insights into human nature and the human condition. My only regret is that these books are not now required reading at the world's best-known university.

Probably By Skyjay The main issue I have with the Harvard Classics library on Amazon is that it IS a public domain work, so you should not have to pay for it. However, all versions freely available don't display properly on the Kindle or Kindle fire. They're also loaded with a number of technical errors, flow issues, and very odd scan issues. Luckily or unluckily for us, Amazon has gone through the works and cleaned them up and created a package that is easily accessible and most importantly READABLE. For the list price of two dollars is well worth the work you would put in trying to deal with the number of errors and issues with the versions available on project Gutenberg and archive.org.NOTE: This volume is pulled from the 1909 publishing of the series by PF Collier & Son.

Every visit I would pick one and read as far into it as possible. This is a great cross-section of western learning and anyone would do well to give them a read.

Three for Three By Jep Streit Chris Knopf's new novel is the third in the series featuring financial and tech wiz Arthur Cathcart and his girlfriend Natsumi Fitzgerald. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two entries but this latest entry is the one that made me late for work. I began reading the novel each morning instead of the paper and the third day had about thirty pages left when I needed to leave, but simply kept going, unable to wait later until after work to find out how it ended.As other reviewers have noted, Arthur Cathcart is a Lazarus figure, shot in the head and left for dead but surviving and eventually tracking down those responsible for shooting him and his wife (who did not survive). After determining who was responsible, the second novel follows Cathcart and his girlfriend as they delve into why the attack was ordered.This novel begins with sudden and overwhelming danger, descending when Cathcart and his girlfriend imagine themselves utterly safe. This dynamic of unexpected and constant danger is maintained throughout the novel, creating an experience of constant tension, an unending cat and mouse game between Cathcart and a shadowy cast of enemies out to get him, so everyone he meets is a potential threat. Cathcart is a great protagonist, no James Bond or Jack Reacher figure, but a middle-aged techy, acutely aware of his own intellectual diminishment from being shot in the head, yet determined and resourceful.Bottom line: Knopf's done it again. Superbly.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Cathcart is still in the thick of it. Lucky for us. By JJ Moir ABWTD is an excellent continuation of the Arthur Cathcart series. Mr. Knopf has done a great job of keeping up the cyber sleuthing and cyber sneaking to a level that is understandable and yet still very credible. I can only hope that there is an avenue to extend this series. It took me almost four hours to read the book. Lucky for me I didn't have to drive anywhere once I started reading. I understand that driving and reading a Chris Knopf novel are frowned upon by the law. I liked and believed the characters and was happy to see the way their situation was resolved. A great read and one that I highly recommend.

And I dive in. Last year, it was Chris Knopf's extraordinary Dead Anyway. Some of the scenes were so gripping I forgot to go to the beach. Cathcart and Fitzgerald are all caught up in it again — and I can't wait to read how it resolves.Knopf is one of my favorite mystery writers. His characters are Runyanesque, his prose a fine blend of brevity and insight, spare yet densely packed with meaning. Most important, he forces you to turn every page briskly to see what's next. Maybe I'll take another book. I'll probably finish ABWTD on the plane.Thank you, Chris Knopf. My vacations are so much better now.

It really is a perfect outline to rule put the excuse of time! In the end she talks about enjoying and maintaining what you accomplished!Organize your home takes a different approach focussing on each area of the house. The author gives some really good ideas here and first hand experience van tell you that these ideas do work.The one last thing I have to mention is the use of pictures to show some of the organizing tools and ideas you likely already have in the house but may overlook.Great matched set here highly recommend.

While cleaning out the farmhouse attic, Liz stumbles across the diary of a 19th century farmer’s wife, and begins to read. Drawn into the woman’s life story, Liz haltingly begins to write again, first responding in her journal, then weaving together the threads of story she finds within the diary. Finally, Liz allows her skills as a storyteller free-reign and creates a fanciful present-tense dialogue between the diarist and herself—where each takes a turn telling her story. As a result of this exchange, Liz comes to recognize the root of her writing problem is a fear of moving on—of beginning a new life without her husband. Through a series of events, including a sisters’ getaway to Chicago and a neighbor’s family wedding, Liz finally recognizes that she cannot wait to ‘get over’ her fears. She must choose to act in spite of them—a choice that ultimately leads her to write a book inspired by the diary. Liz’ story, born out of the author’s Master’s thesis research with the very real thirty-year diary of 19th century Manchester resident Emily Hawley Gillespie, began in the state archives in Iowa City with Emily’s original diary, and traveled to Manchester, Iowa to meet the current owner of Emily’s home—a gentleman who bought the house in 1954 from her daughter. It was there in Emily’s house the author first saw an old wooden trunk which came to signify a pivotal moment in Liz’s search for the diarist and herself.

Lundberg weaves together two very different women’s lives, separated by over two centuries. One life is that of Emily, a Victorian-era young woman who wrote a diary; the other life is that of Liz, a modern-day stalled writer and recent widow. Liz reads between the lines of the manuscript diary to gradually imagine what it would have been like to be courted in the 1800s and to make a huge marriage choice. It seems a stretch to link together a pioneer girl’s dusty diary and the texting of a grieving writer, but the result is a very satisfying, very creative tale. To paraphrase Doctorow: The historian tells what happened; the writer tells how it felt. What a pleasure to see her creativity in writing. I am a lover of historical fiction and this book wove together life now with life in the past. It is wonderfully written and was a pleasure to read. It also gave me something to think about concerning my own life. I finished it wishing there was more. I am looking forward to the next book Margaret writes.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Great Story By Bill R. Moore "The Minister's Black Veil" is one of Nathaniel Hawthorne's best short stories. Hawthorne is not the easiest writer for current readers to get into; his style is somewhat antiquated, and he has a wealth of historical and literary references. However, "The Minister's" is so good that this is soon gotten over, and we are engrossed in the mesmerizing story. Like The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne's most famous work and masterpiece, it is an allegory set in Puritan New England. As always with Hawthorne, the question is what is being allegorized. I once had a professor who jokingly (I think) said he wanted to go back in time and kill Hawthorne because of what the author himself called his "inveterate love of allegory," and it is easy to understand the impulse. The mystery and lack of resolution can be frustrating; anyone who expects stories to be fully tied up simply cannot read him. However, this is also the fun part; virtually everything he wrote can and has been interpreted in a wide variety of ways, and there is rarely a definitive reading. This is especially true for "The Minister's"; a character even explicitly refers to the mystery as "a type and a symbol." The veil of course in many ways recalls the scarlet letter; it may even exist for a similar reason, but there is no real evidence. The story certainly touches on the differences between private and public morality, and there is likely some of Hawthorne's usual religious critique and Puritan hypocrisy exposure. However, the minister's final speech is key; the veil seemingly has great general import. It may imply theological issues like original sin and is apparently more a symbol of overall human corruption and weakness than any particular sin; Hawthorne's deep pessimism hardly ever came out so strongly if so. In any event, he, along with disciple Melville, was distinctly ahead of his time in using heavy allegories, and this is one of his best. The story is worth buying alone, especially as it repays multiple readings as few works do. However, it is widely anthologized, making a standalone hard to justify, but the important thing is to read it in some form.

The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, translated and introduced by Gregory Hays, by that standard, is very worthwhile, indeed. Hays suggests that its most recent incarnation--as a self-help book--is not only valid, but may be close to the author's intent. The book, which Hays calls, fondly, a "haphazard set of notes," is indicative of the role of philosophy among the ancients in that it is "expected to provide a 'design for living.'" And it does, both aphoristically ("Think of yourself as dead. You have lived your life. Now take what's left and live it properly.") and rhetorically ("What is it in ourselves that we should prize?"). Whether these, and other entries ("Enough of this wretched, whining monkey life.") sound life-changing or like entries in a teenager's diary is up to the individual reader, as it should be. Hays has brought us a Marcus Aurelius who puts his hand on your shoulder, looks you in the eye, and tells you like it is: Get over yourself. You can't change the world. Do your best and realize you are of this earth. Human experience is muddy, so what? This book is best read in tough times, when you could use a little steel in your spine.

167 of 168 people found the following review helpful. a superlative translation By garwood Other reviewers here have commented about the work itself, so I would just add a note about this specific translation.One of the most difficult tasks for a reader interested in non-English language work (and works from classical times in particular) is to choose an appropriate translation. Of course, what counts as `appropriate' is somewhat subjective.What I was looking for was a translation that is clear and accurate; one that manages to convey something of a feeling for the both the person who wrote, and the times they wrote in. In this Staniforth excels.Unlike say, the Benjamin Jowett translation of Plato which (at least to my ears) has a distinctly Victorian ring, or the popular new age paraphrases of many of the Stoics (and in truth they are paraphrases or adaptations rather than translations), to me Staniforth (whose translation dates from 1964) strikes just the right balance.The words of Marcus Aurelius are rendered intelligibly and with a dignity and awareness of the historical context. The reader is neither forced to re-read and ponder (i.e., speculatively re-translate), nor wince at inappropriate colloquialisms of 21st century English. Better still, one can immediately perceive and appreciate the times in which the work was written. No mean accomplishment, to say the least.Of course, each reader needs to make this judgment for themselves. Amazon provides an excellent (and free) way of doing this with its `search inside this book' feature, which is enormously useful for anyone making this decision.

The message is simple but extraordinarily powerful: life is short, the past and the future are inaccessible, pain and pleasure have no meaning, but inside each one of us there is a ruling faculty that is touched only by itself. Only that which makes us better capable of confronting our condition with resolution and courage can be said to be good, and only that which makes us worse and more unsatisfied can be said to be bad. The only thing that is of any importance is our own private quest for perfection, which no external power can ever destroy. Marcus Aurelius delivers many insightful and inspirational observations about human nature and the human condition, and he makes an excellent rational argument for seeking the good and for acting modestly and continently. I cannot think or a more satifying and moving work, and it is all the more poignant because it was written by a man who wielded almost absolute power and lived surrounded by the luxury, yet managed to keep things in perspective and to occupy himself only with what truly matters. One sentence captures perfectly the spirit of his writings: "Where a man can live, there he can also live well." An extraordinary testimony of wisdom and fortitude.
