Because of the low Kindle price, I took a chance on an author I didn't recognize. But what a surprise: I found an accomplished and elegant writer, and a treasure that I'll want to revisit many times. I'm buying the paperback version too, so I can keep it in my bookshelves with other much-loved and often-read books!The premise is original: an imaginary land created in great detail by a little girl and her father, as a way to distract Becky from the pains and terrors of dealing with leukemia and its treatment. It's touching, as the father and daughter share their nightly stories about Tamarisk and its history, geography, and inhabitants both human and otherwise. Becky grows into adolescence, and the plants and animals of Tamarisk become less Disneylike and more creative. When her parents divorce, not amicably, Becky's time with Chris, her dad, is limited to the usual weekends-and-one-night-a-week arrangement. Her anger with Chris for leaving "the family" makes her refuse any more Tamarisk collaboration. Becky's illness is in remission, and she does her best to live the life of a normal fourteen-year-old. Meanwhile, Chris grieves at their emotional separation.Then we discover that Tamarisk has a life of its own. The fantasy land has continued to develop even in the absence of further creation from Becky and Chris! The young princess created by little Becky is now the queen; and a mysterious blight is affecting Tamarisk's plant life, changing its entire ecosystems in unimaginable ways. Becky finds herself visiting Tamarisk and becoming friends with Miea, the queen. The author's ability to portray a teenaged girl's emotions, her strengths and her fears, is uncanny.Chris's uncomplicated love for his daughter, his absorption in their shared creative experience, and his fears about her illness and his loss of her in more ways than one are so clearly drawn that we feel them with him.After reading BLUE, I visited Aronica's website [...] to learn more about the author and his work. I couldn't agree more with his statement that "(w)hether (readers) are reading for entertainment or illumination, they want writers to pull them into the writer's world and for the writer to make that world a place where the reader can live for a while." I truly enjoyed living for a little while in the land of Tamarisk. Please read BLUE: it's one of those books that will stay with you for ages.

Good book about a father, child, mother and a divorce By CADiver SOME GENERAL SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW: I read this book based on the reviews already here on Amazon and for the most part I agree that its a good book that brings you along well. The father and child are well developed as characters, although the father has the most exposure and growth throughout the novel. The fantasy land created by father and daughter to help the infant daughter escape from her pain during chemotherapy returns when the daughter's cancer returns some years later - the two are tied together in an obvious way. However, the story makes the obvious still wonderful to read. I do have to say, however, that portions of the novel describing the fantasy land were sometimes over done and I felt them to be irrelevant to the story - I found myself losing interest in the story in these chapters. I was more interested in how the father grew throughout the story and it would have been nice to see the mother also develop more in the story - she was portrayed as a fairly stubborn woman who distrusted her ex-husband's motives and only one time did the fact that the daughter's best interest wasn't at heart brought up (when the daughter states as such).Overall, its a good story, the general plot reminded me of Pan's Labyrinth, although the fact that the quilt turns blue at the end suggests that Tamarisk is, indeed, a real place.

Anderson Generally, I like this type of story line but something here was just incredibly slow moving and I kept feeling like something was completely missing. It just has no depth and no believability. I gave up reading at about 35%, which is rare for me - I almost always finish every book I start reading. I read, on average, 3-4 fiction books per week and I can probably count on one hand the number I've not finished over the years.I think it has potential but clearly, it's missing the mark and I'm glad I got it when it was free.
