I should have liked to provide this collection of "Lay Sermons, Addresses, and Reviews," with a Dedication and a Preface. In the former, I should have asked you to allow me to associate your name with the book, chiefly on the ground that the oldest of the papers in it is a good deal younger than our friendship. In the latter, I intended to comment upon certain criticisms with which some of these Essays have been met.

By Kevin Currie-Knight This collection is a very multifarious collection of essays by "Darwin's Bulldog" Thomas Henry Huxley. Often, Huxley is wronly seen simply as one who simply defended Darwin and did not contribute much by way of originality. Such views are shown here to be mistaken, as we see Huxley the tireless champion of science education, Huxley the philosopher and, as the title suggests, Huxley the popularilzer. These essays were given to popular audiences, and are equal parts science, philosophy, and social argument.**The first five essays generally have to do with explainling how and why science is such a useful advance, and to arguing for science education as an integral part of a general educaiton in Britian. (Huxley was a great defender of science and a prime mover of getting science education into the British curriculum.)**The nex six essays were designed to give the public broad 'science lessons' (in the vein that Dawkins or other popular writers might today). Subjects range from zoology (essay VI) to geology (essays IX, X, and XI), and even to the sociological positivism of Auguste Compte (who you will find that Huxley was not at all fond of).** Essays XII and XIII are defences of Darwin's "Origin of Species." Strangely, in reading these essays we find that the criticisms (and defenses) of 150 years ago are often the same as those today. Huxley defends Darwinian evolution from those who accuse him of teleological thinking, 'design theorists', and those who accuse evolution of being incapable of producing design if not by design (130 years before William Dembski!).The last essay (along with remarks made in several other essays) offers a good window into Huxley's view of materialism. Huxley was a materialist, but not in the way often described. On the one hand, Huxley certainly thought that the only way to find reliable knowledge was via science and sense-evidence. Huxley, though DID NOT believe that science could say, as anything better than faith, that nature was all there is. In this, the final essay ("On Descartes' 'Discourse Touching the Method of Using One's Reason Rightly and of Seeking Scientific Truth"), is a good segue into Huxley's "Agsnosticism" and "Evolution and Ethics."All in all, this is a very good collection of essays that offer a sample of Huxley's wide variety of thoughts and opinions. Not only do we see Uuxley from many different angles (philosophical, scientific, political) but we also see his strangths as a writer; these popular essays are very well written and examples of clear expression.Good collection for any Huxley fan.(The only warning I have is that the table of contents at the beginning of this collection are not "hyperlinked," so one must scoll through the entire book to get to any particluar essay.)

The Virginians -When the Old and New Worlds find each other troubling By Greg Deane William Makepeace Thackeray's novel, The Virginians: A Tale of the Last Century, was first published in a single volume in 1859. A number of characters in Thackeray's novel Henry Esmond reappear, though much older, in The Virginians, so that it is a generational sequel. But in this work the contrast is more concerned about interactions between the New World and the Old World, rather than between the intrigues between supporters of the Stuarts and the new dynasty established by William of Orange in 1688.The wide geographic and social panorama was apparently hard for Thackeray to control, and his execution of the story seems desultory. Thus Anthony Trollope expressed qualified praise for the work saying: "There is not a page of it vacant or dull. But he who takes it up to read as a whole, will find that it is the work of a desultory writer, to whom it is not infrequently difficult to remember the incidents of his own narrative."The adventures of the sibling protagonists, George and Harry Esmond Warrington, unfold mainly in Virginia and in England, and further afield in Canada and Europe, beginning with the Seven Years War and continuing beyond the American Revolution. Historical figures abound, including Benjamin Franklin, inventor and statesman; General George Braddock, who led redcoats to one their worst defeats against native populations; George Washington, as a young officer in the colonial army, and General James Wolfe who won French Canada for the British empire. One of the dominant themes of the work is the pervasiveness of vanity, a theme Thackeray dealt with most vituperatively in Vanity Fair but also a quality he uses to ridicule all the characters in this work, some much more viciously than others. Another theme that he explores is the division that politics can bring about in families, so that the two Warrington brothers are on different sides during the American Revolution. With this theme in mind, Thackeray begins his work with the observation, "On the library wall of one of the most famous writers of America, there hang two crossed swords, which his relatives wore in the great War of Independence".The work is worth reading for Thackeray's historical insights and the way in which he demonstrates how public events impact on private lives; how jealousies and affections can persist over several thousand miles and scores of years of separation. But apart from being desultory, Thackeray allows himself to become ensnared by his own love of detail, about his fancies of the effect of a tone or a look or the setting of a hat or a ruff. It may be the author could have saved himself the trouble these details took as many readers may be likely to skip over them. The Virginians

It took me over 12 days of almost non-stop reading. I read slow! I got that flu so this book is how I recovered. Not that I am up on Old English history, poetry, folklore and what- have-you but it was worth reading especially with all the first-hand accounts of the succession from the mother country including names of their Generals, battles and many American heroes were included. SO very fascinating! I loved every minute especially the clean non-graphic accounts of marital bliss and other odd relationships that were woven in as back stories. Mr. T. is one of the finest Novelists of the 18th/19th Century. No one holds a candle to his word-play, puns and visual word-pictures. We are right there in the moment. We are living in the mansions, eating with the guests, playing cards with the table-gamers and losing our money, cassocks, shirts and the even a plantation or two. Although one things is for sure, we are not really losing anything but our time. After the tenth day, my husband looks over from the dishpan and says, "Dear, why don't you pick out a book of the Bible"? I say, This isn't just any book dear, this is American History"! I finish it two days later. I recommend this novel to anyone who has twelve days+ to toss away.

I really liked the characters at first, but they started to get on my nerves after a while. There was some interesting history and some good parts, but I would say the book as a whole was just average. It is the sequel to the History of Henry Edmond, Esq, and I would recommend reading that first as there are lots of allusions made to events that happened in that book, although this book takes place a while later and has different characters (descendants of characters in Henry Edmond).

The author tells the progressive breakdown of Edith which gains momentum but it ends hastily in the middle of her trivial life. Edith lives with her uncle and his evil son in a little house of Pennsylvania. Slowly and unavoidable, she refugees in her own diary and creates a fantasy world totally different from reality. The end is more subtle, intense, more terrifying than a murder.

By alexa wilson only a few projects. photo's or diagrams would make the instructions clearer. photo of the finished project would be helpful plus it could help inspire new ideas for upcycling clothes.as the book is now I can't recommend at this price.

Bagging up clothes isn’t a particularly fun activity, after all By John Snowy Old clothing often just sits in your dresser drawers or in your closet, taking up the space you could be using for clothing you actually wear. You might think of tossing it out or giving it away, but how often do you really have the motivation? Bagging up clothes isn’t a particularly fun activity, after all. But making crafts is, and there are plenty of crafts you can create from old clothing. You can dress up your old clothes with cool alterations, create accessories, quilts, artwork, or transform one piece of clothing into another. There are plenty of mind-blowing ways to repurpose old clothing. Open this book and read on for ideas. This book contains some neat ideas to get you started on the up cycling process. I love the ideas behind the book, and the all the skillset in this area that you need to tap into as a beginner. Well, I was a beginner anyway. Don't feel like it anymore after this book. Awesome and original ideas that turned my boring summer into a super fun project.

On this road trip, the past is a boneyard, up ahead is the end of the line, and along the way Myra Stark and Pinkie are driving a 1984 Plymouth Turismo from Minnesota through Wisconsin. The travelers pick up a battered hitchhiker, follow a detour into the darkly comic Stark family history, and veer off track more than once. "Road Trip" is a narrative of disappointment and failed rescues; about the ghosts that haunt us and the relationships we leave behind.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Irreverent, hilarious, brilliant By Yes, More Books Please! Road Trip is a curiosity cabinet, a breathless carnival ride of language and brilliantly realized characters. Actual life is this way, too, but D’Amico compresses the utter strangeness that is a journey from cradle to grave, preserving the odd, the tender, the heartbreaking, and the unanswerable. Take the trip in short jaunts in order to savor the sights, or throw back the rag top in a luminous single excursion. This is a read you will not soon forget.

Myka ROAD TRIP is the best kind of book--hilarious and melancholic, ambitious in its approach, and artistic and economical in its prose. The voice of the narrator and the histories that are interwoven here stick with the reader long after the story has ended.

The bestselling family novel about change as dramatic as the fall leaves in New England. NATIONAL BESTSELLER Welcome to Oldham, CT, a small town rich in Colonial heritage while being utterly contemporary. Situated along the Connecticut River Valley, Oldham bursts with color every fall, as the leaves on its trees evolve into an unmatched palette of scarlet, orange, purple, yellow, and bronze. For more than three decades, the Gold family has been a central part of Oldham in the fall, its Sugar Maple Inn a destination for “leaf-peepers” from all over the country, and its annual Halloween party a stirring way to punctuate the town’s most active month. But this year, more than just the leaves are changing. With the death of their parents, the Gold siblings, Maria, Maxwell, Deborah, Corrina, and Tyler, have decided to sell the Sugar Maple Inn, and this year’s Halloween party will be the last. As October begins, the Golds contend with the finality that faces them, and the implications it has for a family that has always been so close. For some, it means embracing new challenges and new love. For others, it means taking on unimagined roles. And for others, it means considering the inconceivable. Complicating it all is a series of “hauntings” that touch each of the Gold siblings, a series of benign interventions that will remain a mystery until October draws to a close. Filled with romance, tension, and unforgettable family drama, LEAVES is the first in a series of novels about a world and a family that readers will want to make their own. “The characters are so life-like that they become one’s own family…. As the days kept getting crossed off the calendar and getting close to the end, I didn’t know whether to read faster to see what happened or read slower so that I could savor this book and not have it end.” – CMash Reads “LEAVES is plainly a lovely, lovely story that will be enjoyed by all readers. Sometimes, potency is conveyed without a stick of dynamite because it is just so – like most of our lives – very real!” – Crystal Book Reviews “This wonderful blend of irony, love and humor is one of my favorite books this year.” – Cheryl’s Book Nook “Beautifully written, memorable and realistic, you will not want the books to end once you start it. Everyone will be anxiously awaiting the next book.” – Single Titles PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED AS MICHAEL BARON

The River Edge Café had been open for business since the late ‘90s, when a husband-and-wife team made a killing during the tech stock boom and decided to “chuck it all” and follow their passion for fine food. Located on the water between Oldham and Essex, it was popular for its ambitious menu, its beautiful setting, and its attentive staff. However, it had recently lost two executive chefs in quick succession, leading to rumors that the owners were impossible taskmasters and maybe even a little abusive. Deborah didn’t necessarily believe these unfounded stories, but they made her wary through the entire interview process, and even now, in her third meeting with the couple, she wondered if there was something less than genuine behind Carla Bonner’s ubiquitous smile or Vince Travers’s persistence.“We want you here, Deb,” Vince said. People didn’t really call her “Deb,” but Vince seemed to insist on it. He had been doing so since they first met half a decade ago. “There are maybe two dishes on the menu we think we need to keep. The entire rest of the menu would be yours.”“It would be like having your own restaurant without the hassle of ownership,” Carla said. Deborah had been in precisely that situation her entire adult life, so she wasn’t sure why Carla thought this was a selling point.“I’m completely willing to wait until the middle of November if you want to take a couple of weeks off between jobs,” Vince said. “Trina’s an excellent sous chef and she’s doing a great job of holding the fort for us. To be honest, if we weren’t so intent on recruiting you, we’d give her the job right now.”“That’s very flattering,” Deborah said, wondering how resentful Trina would be of her if she decided to take the position. This wasn’t the first offer Deborah had received, though it was certainly the most aggressive. She got a couple of calls as soon as word got out about the sale of the Inn. The people buying the Sugar Maple even made her an extremely attractive offer to stay precisely where she was. She never seriously considered it, though. It was hard enough cooking there now that both of her parents were gone. It would be impossible to take direction there from someone else and even harder to watch the inevitable changes they made. Deborah imagined herself collapsing into tears the first time they replaced a table lamp. She was convinced that when she walked out of the Inn at the end of the Halloween party she would never again set foot in the place just so she could remember it forever the way she wanted.None of the offers she’d received so far had seemed very appealing. She knew that she was running the risk of seeming like a prima donna and she also knew that she should be eternally grateful for the attention, but she couldn’t allow herself to take a position unless it sang out to her. She even considered trying to find a job in a diner or a coffee shop somewhere – something completely one-dimensional with little or no room for personal investment – just to recalibrate. But of course that was ridiculous. How long could she flip burgers before she started slipping exotic ingredients into the ground beef? She had enough money saved to get by for about six months, and if it took that long to find the right spot, that was fine with her.“I’m not trying to flatter you,” Vince said. “I’m trying to employ you. Your customers will flatter you every time the waitstaff delivers one of your inventions.”Deborah smiled. The “Deb” thing aside, she’d always liked Vince and she wished the rumors weren’t causing her to question his sincerity. That was the pernicious thing about rumors.“The package you’re offering is great,” she said, nodding to both Vince and Carla. “I’ve always been fond of this restaurant, and you have a great kitchen. I just need a couple of days.”“Of course,” Carla said. “Take as long as you must.”Vince patted her hand. “We’re here for you, Deb. Call me anytime if you have questions. I gave you our home number, right?”“You did, yes. I just want to take a little longer to think. I’ll call you on Monday.”Deborah stood and shook their hands. The fact was, she already made her decision, but it didn’t seem polite to turn them down flat. The River Edge Café was a fine restaurant and it did have a sensational kitchen. The more time she spent there, though, she realized there wasn’t anything about this place that felt like home. She drove through downtown Oldham on the way back to the inn. Waiting for a couple of pedestrians to cross Hickory, she noticed the sign for Sage, the gourmet shop that had opened a couple of weeks earlier. She couldn’t believe she hadn’t visited it yet. When a car pulled out of the parking space across from the store, she decided the time was right. The store was in a moderately large space between a music store and a bookstore. Deborah had a hard time remembering what was in the space before (there had been several shops there over the past few years), but the new owner had done a great job of remodeling it. Lots of blond wood fixtures, warm lighting, and handwritten signage. There was a refrigerator case housing artisanal cheeses and sausages in understated, small-production packages.Deborah liked being here immediately. Maybe it was the slack-key guitar music coming from the sound system or that one of the front tables was dedicated to the small Tuscan pasta manufacturer she “discovered” a couple of years ago and had used exclusively at the inn ever since. Deborah knew this would be a place she’d visit often. She’d been to all the gourmet shops in the area, and was frustrated by the sameness of them. It was almost as though some food rep came along and set each one up based on some model. This place had a decidedly individual point of view, though. The shelf of spices was an asymmetrical jumble of bottles and tins of different sizes. Next to it was a card that read, “This might not be the prettiest display of spices you’ve ever seen, but it’s hopefully the best. I’ve compared everything on this shelf to the competition and only carry the ones I love the most.” Deborah agreed about the mustard seed, the ground coriander, and the smoked paprika, but she would have chosen a different Telicherry peppercorn.A man walked up to her while she was standing at the display. “Find anything you like?”She turned to look at him. He was a little over six feet and lean. And he had very expressive eyes. “Krendahl has better peppercorns,” she said.“You’re right, but they only sell from their catalog. I tried, believe me. They also import this fabulous five spice powder, but again, I couldn’t get it. Think I should change the card in the spirit of full disclosure?”Deborah laughed. “Your secret is safe with me. You’re the owner?”He extended his hand and Deborah took it. “Sage Mixon.”“Deborah Gold. So the store is named after you and not after” – she reached for a bottle – “Brookfield’s hand-rubbed Albanian.”He smiled. “You obviously know your spices. Are you in the food business?”“I’m the chef at the Sugar Maple Inn – at least I am until the end of the month.”“Moving on to bigger and better things?”Deborah rolled her eyes. “That part isn’t at all certain at the moment.” She turned toward another display. “I’ve never seen these preserves before.”“They’re incredible. They’re all made by a single dad out of a barn in New Hampshire. He sweetens them with a ‘proprietary blend’ of fruit juices and balances each with some kind of spice or infusion. The lemon marmalade is mind-boggling.” He picked up a jar and handed it to her. “He adds a touch of Thai basil. It’s amazing what happens.”Deborah examined the jar in her hand. If nothing else, Sage was an excellent salesman. Of course she would buy this. Before she did, though, she spent another half hour in the store walking from display to display. Sage stayed with her when he wasn’t helping other customers, and it became obvious that there was a story behind everything he carried. She hoped the visitors who flitted in and out appreciated the thought that went into this. More importantly, she hoped that – appreciative or not – the visitors were plentiful. Oldham needed more stores like this one.By the time she’d finished shopping, Deborah had the marmalade, a salsa from Nogales, a bottle of raspberry thyme vinegar made a half hour away, and a package of stroopwafels made in Montana, of all places. She didn’t need any of it. She certainly had access to just about everything she wanted from the network of suppliers she’d developed over the years. But it was fun buying here and she definitely wanted to support the place.“Come again soon,” Sage said as he packaged her purchases.“I will. Definitely. Hey, come by the Inn for dinner sometime in the next month.”“I might just do that. I mean if you know this much about food, you might actually be able to cook.”Deborah laughed. “Yeah, it’s a possibility.”He smiled and his eyes danced. Deborah would definitely be back soon.

Leaves By Jersey Girl Book Reviews / Jersey Girl Sizzling Book Reviews The Gold family's Sugar Maple Inn has been a popular tourist destination in Oldham, Connecticut for thirty-two years. Autumn in New England, where the leaves change their glorious colors, draws a faithful legion of "leaf peepers" to the area every fall season. But for the five Gold siblings, this is the final autumn that they will own the inn. After the death of their parents, Joseph and Bethany, who had moved their family from Long Island to Oldham to start a new life, the five Gold siblings: Maria, Maxwell, Deborah, Corrina and Tyler have made the reluctant decision to sell the inn to an organization that operates country inns all along the Eastern seaboard. The Gold family will hold their final traditional Halloween party before the inn officially changes hands on November 1st.Leaves follows the Gold siblings throughout the month of October as they count down the remaining days of owning the Sugar Maple Inn, culminating in the hosting of the inn's traditional Halloween party. As the days count down, the siblings struggle to let go, move on, and start anew. Each sibling has their own individual memories and issues that they are dealing with in their lives, but the ending of their family owned business adds a bittersweet element to the tumultuous and emotional time that they are going through. Will the upcoming sale of the family inn tear the family apart? Will the once close family bond loosen as they focus on their individual personal lives? Or will the family traditions and bonds of love forged by their beloved parents bring them closer together?Leaves is a poignant story of a New England family's changing dynamic ... similar to the autumnal seasonal leaves changing of colors in their hometown. Author Michael Baron weaves a heartfelt and riveting tale of loss, rebirth and renewal for the siblings in the Gold family, who each struggle with life changes within their family relationships. As the month of October counts down the days to the inn's final traditional Halloween party, the story chronicles the sibling's ups and downs of their individual lives, as they move towards the end of the ownership of their family inn. Just like the seasonal changes, life also changes, and for the Gold family, the changes will redefine their lives and family relationship. The reader is drawn into the Gold siblings lives, magically transported to the scenic New England town of Oldham and the quaint family owned Sugar Maple Inn. As the individual life stories of the Gold siblings (Maria, Maxwell, Deborah, Corrina and Tyler) unfold, the reader can't help but become emotionally invested as if they were their own family members. The author builds upon the drama of the siblings personal lives and their family relationship with the calendar countdown of the final days of their family inn. Like a emotionally charged roller coaster ride, the author keeps the reader engaged with the riveting twists and turns of the changing Gold family dynamic, only to leave the reader emotionally spent with a bittersweet cliffhanger ending as the Gold family saga continues in the next book in the series.Author Michael Baron's storytelling is reminiscent of my favorite author, Nicholas Sparks. His thoughtful creative style of writing simply captivates the reader and holds them spellbound.Leaves is an emotionally moving story about family relationships and life changes that will simply tug at your heartstrings. I just know that the Gold Family series is going to be one that will resonate with the readers long after the last page has been read.Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book from the author / publisher in exchange for my honest review.

When the leaves begin their autumn display of colour, the `leaf-peepers' come out in full force. The Sugar Maple Inn is one of Oldham's most popular tourist destinations, and their annual Halloween party is always the highlight of the season. But after the death of their parents, the Gold siblings have decided to sell the Inn and this year's Halloween party will be their last. With frayed nerves and sibling squabbles straining their relationship, the last month at the Inn isn't as memorable as it should be for Maria, Maxwell, Deborah, Corrina, and Tyler. Leaves introduces readers to these 5 siblings, along with their families and community as they struggle with letting go, moving on and starting anew.Michael Baron always fills his novels with wonderful characters and Leaves is no exception. The Gold siblings are unique and well-developed and their relationship is complex but realistic. The lush New England setting is described in rich detail, bringing the brilliant fall colours and pleasant small-town to life. Making this book a little different that his other novels, Michael Baron has added a touch of fantasy as each of the siblings experiences brief encounters with the paranormal. Despite being a big fan of the genre, I felt that the supernatural elements brought me out of the story rather than adding to it. The story starts out a month before the party and counts down to the big day, chronicling the sibling's lives as they move towards this significant event. The conclusion is left somewhat open-ended, ensuring readers will want to come back and find out where life will take each of the siblings.Though the story is a little slow-paced for my tastes, Leaves is an enjoyable fall read with likeable characters and a cozy, romantic setting.

Little Plot, No Ending By Michelle (Michy) Devon I hate when reviewers give spoilers, but I also hate it more when I read a book and then realize there's no ending. WARNING: This book doesn't end.It is the build up of a story of a family, a family drama or saga, that follows several members of a larger family as they transition into their lives once the patriarch and matriarch of the family pass away. The story tries to have a slight supernatural bent to it, but it's not a big part or really all that important part of the story. We watch the family go through their internal struggles--both together as a family and apart as individuals--and it's compelling personal drama. I enjoyed the stories generally, and would have given the book four stars, except for the darned lack of an ending. While a few things were tied up, the majority of the storyline was not, and the author leaves us with a message there is more to come for this family in future books. I don't like investing so much time in a book and not realizing that it has no ending. I would have preferred to have read a book with a solid ending, tying up these current loose ends, but then leaving room for the future and thus the author could have written in this universe and these characters again.I'm just saying, I wish it had been 'sold' as a serial novel instead of making me think I was going to read a complete book, with a satisfying ending. I don't know if it would have changed my desire to read it, but at least I wouldn't have been disappointed when I got to the end.I did receive a readers copy of this book in exchange for my honest review, but was provided no additional compensation for this review and the opinion in the review is my own.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Heartwarming Stories of Rescued Cats By Rebecca of Amazon Does this book have an adorable cover or what? I love it. I also love all the wonderful stories of cats who found forever homes. This is the second book of cat stories and I must say it is even better than the first. All the authors have a way with words and really have a heart for rescuing cats. This book has heartwarming stories that sometimes are so beautiful they will make you close to tears. I did not find very many sad stories so that was good. It seems most of these stories have happy endings. It seems that for every person who abandons a cat there is a wonderful person who is willing to rescue the cat. So much good work is being done in the world and this is one of the books that proves it. Here is what the stories are about:1. A cat is rescued from Indian along with a dog. Most people rescue cats from their own community so I was intrigued that someone would go halfway around the world for the love of cats.2. Freya and Sig are difficult cats but they help a man find meaning and purpose.3. This is a shocking story of an abandoned mother and her kittens. Fortunately they are found in time and saved. What really connected me with this story was all the pictures. Wow I'm so happy this situation turned out good.4. A depressed person finds a kitten and therefore finds strength to care and love again. This story is so beautiful it might make you cry.5. Romeo's story is pretty funny.6. A cat and a dog become friends and playmates.7. Why are there people who abandon kitties in the wild. It is so cruel. This story may make you a little angry at humans. But the truth is we found our best cat by the side of the road too.8. In this story and outdoor kitty finds a forever home.9. A feral cat is slowly tamed. Quite the story.10. A story about a polydactyl cat who is rescued for the back yard.11. A dog and street cat fall madly in love. Get your tissues out for this story.12. A little kitten is found in the middle of the road. She miraculously is not hurt.13. Three cats become best friends. Mr. Graycat become the family protector.14. The author happens upon a feral colony of 20 cats. In this story three kittens find a home.15. It is interesting to read in this story that so many cat owners have been trained to turn on faucets for their cats. We hada cat that loved us to do that too.16. A grouchy kitten grows up to be a loving cat.17. This story shows how the pain of loss can somewhat be relieved when you find a new cat to rescue. This story made me cry.18. This story has a disastrous start but a happy ending.19. In this story a exhausted, starving and terrified cat is saved.20. Greta the cat gets lost and found again. Some of these stories make me wonder if God has special angels in charge of helping humans find cats as presents for kind souls.~The Rebecca ReviewI received this book free for review purposes. This review is my honest opinion.

These touching stories ranged from the whimsically cute to the heart-warming tear jerkers. There were two things that impressed me the most about this book. First, I am amazed by the selfless nature of these storytellers. I'm sure they would all say that they are getting much more in return, but I am so impressed with the lengths that they go to for their kitties. Secondly, I love the pictures of the kitties at the end of each story. What a nice touch! There were many times when I would actually say, "Awww" out loud when I got to the picture of the kitty. I highly recommend this book and hope that the authors publish even more.

Living Christ: An Exposition of the Immortality of Man in Soul and Body is a work written by Paul Tyner. Tyner is an Irish-born and American-educated Rosicrucianist and was a member of the Fraternitas Rosae Crucis, rising to be a member of the Council of Three within the secret society. The purpose of this book is to argue for man's immortality, not only in a physical sense but also in a spiritual sense. The author believes that every individual has immortality within their grasp. The book relies heavily on the text of the Bible for the conclusions it draws. See the chapter entitled Scriptural Evidences of Bodily Immortality for example. It should be noted that the teachings of Tyner at times differ wildly from anything presented in The Bible. For example, to obtain physical immortality, the author recommends, "In summer, let our naked bodies reflect and be reflected in the sun, baring it to the open air, by brook side, or sea-shore."This book will definitely appeal to those interested in a form of non-traditional spiritualism. While frequent references are made to The Bible, the teachings in Living Christ are vastly different from that of most Christian religions. An interesting and enlightening book about a little known practice.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com

"Marcus (THE NEW ME) has written a novel of weight and heart. Forthright in chronicling harrowing conditions of the era and Southern setting while not succumbing to stereotypes, she reveals the complexities of humanity and demonstrates a keen ear for the music of language in the individual voices of her characters. Lovers of THE HELP and civil rights–era literary fiction will enjoy this book." – Library Journal "Marcus’ well-crafted, highly accessible novel can readily be compared to THE HELP, by Kathryn Stockett (2009), for its recognition of the lot of black domestic servants. However, there is one major difference, and that is the way Marcus writes about the creative impulse. Billy Ray’s descriptions of his music making are both wondrous and joyful." – Booklist "LAVINA is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Mary Marcus gives distinctive voice to three engaging characters, bringing our compassion and sympathy to each of them as she deftly unravels their complex story of heartache, courage, and love." – Diane Chamberlain, international bestselling author of NECESSARY LIES "LAVINA is a richly nuanced journey to Louisiana during the civil rights era and contemporary times that encompasses the liberating but pain-filled emergence of R&B and rock and roll. Mary Marcus has a mystical insight into the agony and ecstasy of the creative process and the lives of performers. She also unflinchingly brings alive the insane disparity of lives of rich and poor, and black and white, and sees both the pain, the cruelty and also the love and richness of the South." – Danny Goldberg, author of BUMPING INTO GENIUSES NATIONAL BESTSELLER Mary Jacob grew up as an anomaly. A child of Louisiana in the early sixties, she found little in common with most of the people in her community and in her household, and her best friend was Lavina, the black woman who cooked and cleaned for her family. Billy Ray had an incredible gift he kept to himself. Alone except for his mother Lavina in the racially segregated and tense early ’60s, Billy Ray constantly dreamed up ways he could get his mother out of the big white house where she cooked and cleaned. Especially away from the white girl who he imagined his mother loved more than she loved him. Mary Jacob escaped her history and established a fresh, if imperfect, life for herself in New York. Billy Ray chased fame, and came up a broken musician grasping for small gigs.  When both are called back to their hometown, Mary Jacob and Billy Ray discover truths about the past they’ve spent a lifetime forgetting – about the lives they left behind, and about a fateful day three decades earlier when three lives changed forever. A generation-spanning story both intimate and enormous in scope, LAVINA is a novel rich in humanity, sharp in its indictments, and stunning in its resolution.

Prepare to lose yourself in this thrilling novel, beautifully crafted by the awesomely talented Ms. Marcus.”– Robert Tate Miller, author of Forever Christmas“Mary Marcus writes witty insightful novels that echo all the interesting places she's lived – New York, Los Angeles, Shreveport, Louisiana. Her work reminds somehow of Joan Didion, Mary Karr and James Elroy. Don't ask me how.” – Claudia Dreifus, author/journalist"Mary Marcus' Lavina is a sprawling, passionate Southern Gothic nightmare which beautifully depicts the transformative power of musical creation. Billy Ray jumps from the page as a living, breathing embodiment of Louisiana's Black roots music."– Blake Leyh, Emmy Award-winning music supervisor of The Wire and Treme“The author certainly poured her heart and soul into this novel. I was drawn into the different narrative voices, but one of the most effective aspects of the book was the use of the vernacular – you can hear the characters speaking – just excellent!”– And the Story Unfolds“Loved, loved everything about LAVINA by Mary Marcus – beautifully crafted, from the stunning front cover, the well-developed characters, setting, plot, and remarkable storytelling.”– Must Read Books“For anyone looking for a masterly written and beautiful packaged novel, I recommend LAVINA by Mary Marcus. It’s a phenomenal read!”– Ninovelty“One of the most beautifully written books I've read.”– Meanderings and Musings“Mary Marcus does an astounding job in reaching out to the reader, bringing them into the story as if the characters themselves were sitting beside us, telling us everything that happened, seemingly interrupting each other and filling in details. It's quite an amazing novel, simple as that.”– The Coffee Pot

If you are a fan of Southern literature, this one is a #mustread for your summer TBR list. The cast of eccentric characters will hold you captive on a dark journey through the deep South in the unsettled days of the Civil Rights Movement in 1960s.Mary Jacob hasn’t been home to Louisiana in more than two decades. When she returns to Murpheysfield to visit her estranged father on his deathbed, the forgotten secrets of her past come back to haunt her. Through alternating points of view, Mary Marcus shares the events leading up to the tragedy that changes not only Mary Jacob’s life but the lives of her beloved black housekeeper, Lavina, who Mary Jacob loves like her own mother, and Lavina’s son, Billy Ray.Through beautifully written description, Marcus brought back many memories of my own childhood. She nailed the tone of the novel, from all three points of view. With that said, I got bogged down in places, in the deep pockets of description that did little to drive the plot forward. Repetitive at times and unnecessarily wordy at others, Marcus exerts more effort than necessary to drive the point home. I skimmed and skipped but I never consider abandonment.

By Simone Shevelle I liked Lavina much better than "The New Me" a rather superficial LA chic book. Lavinia is more thoughtful, emotionally authentic and interesting. However, as with "The New Me" Marcus needs a better editor. It is too long. Marcus knows her Southern accent and cooking and she knows the power of abusive relationships. Worth reading.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Compelling, touching, and thought provoking! By WRB Murpheysfield, Louisiana – 1960’s – There was much discrimination and racial tension during the civil rights era. The black women cleaned, cooked, and many times raised the children of affluent whites, as their own, before the days of civil rights and integration. The story demonstrates strong truths about racism during the era of Martin Luther King. This book is not just about race, but also the struggle to find one’s identity and to become accepted. There are strong themes of heartache, hate, attachment, and love. I must say that I found slight similarities to The Help by Kathryn Stockett, and yet they were so different. The core of the book is formed by three extraordinary characters, and cleverly gives the story three different perspectives. The history of the day is dramatically told in their own distinct voices, which brought the story to vivid life.Lavina – A lovable character that exuded strength, and managed to carry on and care about others despite an unjust system. She loved Mary Jacob like her own child. She really added humor to the story.Mary Jacob hated her father most of her life. She’d always thought of him as having a hard and rigid heart, and knowing there was no love between them. The only reliable love and comfort she felt as a child was from Lavina, the family’s housekeeper. She thought of Lavina as her mother. Her biological mother was confined to bed because of being ill and there was very little interaction between them.Billy Ray, son of Lavina, and not very likable, had been lonely for most of his fifteen years. Nobody had been in his life except his mother and he harbored so much hate and anger in his heart. But as he got older, music became a huge part of his life and he was finally able to express himself, putting his thoughts and feelings into his music. The author certainly poured her heart and soul into this novel. I was drawn into the different narrative voices, but one of the most effective aspects of the book was the use of the vernacular – you can hear the characters speaking – just excellent! One negative comment – I didn’t like the profanity used, especially by Billy Ray, finding it to be offensive, and it serves no purpose in my opinion. That being said, I found Lavina to be a compelling, touching, and thought provoking read. Just excellent! 4+ stars.I received an advance reading copy of this book from The Story Plant in exchange for an honest review.

For over thirty years, the Oxford C. S. Lewis Society has met weekly in the medieval colleges of the University of Oxford. During that time, it has hosted as speakers nearly all those still living who were associated with the Inklings--the Oxford literary circle led by C. S. Lewis--as well as authors and thinkers of a prominence that nears Lewis's own.C. S. Lewis and His Circle offers the reader a chance to join this unique group. Roger White has worked with Society past presidents Brendan and Judith Wolfe to select the most important talks, which are here made available to the wider public for the first time. They exemplify the best of traditional academic essays, thoughtful memoirs, and informal reminiscences about C. S. Lewis and his circle. The reader will reimagine Lewis's Cosmic Trilogy with former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, read philosopher Elizabeth Anscombe's final word on Lewis's arguments for Christianity, hear the Reverend Peter Bide's memories of marrying Lewis and Joy Davidman in an Oxford hospital, and learn about Lewis's Narnia Chronicles from his former secretary.Representing the finest of both personal and scholarly engagement with C. S. Lewis and the Inklings, the talks collected here set a new tone for engagement with this iconic Oxford literary circle-a tone close to Lewis's own Oxford-bred sharpness and wryness, seasoned with good humor and genuine affection for C. S. Lewis and his circle.

C. S. Lewis and His Circle: Essays and Memoirs from the Oxford C.S. Lewis SocietyFrom Oxford University Press

Review "This book is a treat. Just when you might have thought there wasn't much more to say about Lewis, Tolkien, and their friends, we have a rich and diverse collection of reflections, reminiscences, expositions, and engagements from angles both expected and unexpected. By retaining the spoken style of the original contributions to the Oxford C. S. Lewis Society (not quite a new Inklings, not quite a new Socratic Club, but sharing the heritage of both), the editors give us the sense that we are there in Oxford, thinking through issues old and new, always being challenged to fresh visions of literature, faith, and a hundred other topics. There is here much to ponder, much to praise." --Rt. Revd. Prof. N. T. Wright, St. Mary's College, St. Andrews

"Among the many worthwhile studies of C. S. Lewis which have been published in recent years, this will prove to be among the most important. It gives us authentic and candid insights into his personal as well as his literary and scholastic life, adds significantly to our understanding of why his reputation continues to expand worldwide, and deepens his influence." --Aidan Mackey, Senior Fellow, G. K. Chesterton Institute

"The Oxford C. S. Lewis Society has always been a beacon for students of C. S. Lewis, his friends, and their shared vision. In this splendid collection, the editors share with us the choicest fruits of thirty years of scholarship and conversation. The result is an illuminating tribute to Lewis and an intellectual feast worthy of the liveliest of Inklings gatherings." --Carol Zaleski, co-author (with Philip Zaleski) of The Fellowship: The Literary Lives of the Inklings: J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Owen Barfield, Charles Williams

"The book is a treasure for Lewis fans. Highly recommended."--J. R. Griffin, Colorado State University, CHOICE

"The satisfactions of this volume are legion- far too numerous to be contained in this brief review. It is far better to find the book itself, along with a comfortable chair."--Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

About the Author Roger White is curator of the Inklings Special Collection for the University Libraries as well as Professor of Ministry for the Seminary at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, California. Judith Wolfe is Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Theology and the Arts at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. She has published widely on C. S. Lewis and is the founding general editor of the Journal of Inklings Studies.Brendan N. Wolfe is a Germanic philologist at Oxford, editor of the Journal of Inklings Studies, and past president and secretary of the C. S. Lewis Society of Oxford University.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A distinctive, important contribution to Inklings studies By Holly E. Ordway "CS Lewis & His Circle" offers a distinct and valuable contribution to the study of the Inklings: essays and memoirs from 30 years of the Oxford C.S. Lewis Society. Every essay in it was originally a talk given to the members of the Oxford C.S. Lewis Society, which meets weekly during the academic year. Thus, the volume offers insights both into Lewis and the other Inklings, and also to the development of Inklings studies over the past three decades. Indeed, the title of the book is very apt: CS Lewis and his circle can be taken to mean not only Lewis and his own friends and family (represented in the content of the volume) but also Lewis and his readers and critics (represented in the authors of the essays). The essays are arranged in thematic categories - "Philosophy and Theology," "Literature," "Memories of CS Lewis by His Family and Friends," and "Memories of the Inklings." Within each section the topics and styles vary, reflecting the varied nature of the actual talks. The Philosophy section contains gems such as Elizabeth Anscombe discussing Lewis's famous re-write of Miracles after his debate with her; the Literature section includes pieces by Rowan Williams and noted Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey; the Memoirs section includes fascinating new material by a range of those who knew Lewis. Scholars will find much of value in the more academic pieces, but interested non-academic readers will also profit by reading both the academic and the more informal pieces. One of the great strengths of the Lewis Society is that it is open to anyone who wishes to attend, whether they be student, scholar, or simply a reader who enjoys the Inklings' work - and introduces them to the world of lively discussion and debate by a range of views on the Inklings. The diversity of the Society is reflected in the talks. Some of the essays prompted me to disagree with certain points of interpretation - but in a productive way, very much in keeping with the spirit of discussion of the Society meetings themselves. Lewis Society talks demand attention, and reward it. So too with this volume. It's not a light read (but there are plenty of light-weight volumes on the Inklings already!), but one that is worth reading slowly and attentively. In addition to having a solid and interesting selection of essays and memoirs, the book also has an excellent closing essay by Michael Ward on the history of the CSL Society. It's well worth reading this essay immediately after the Foreword (about the founding of the Society) as it provides context and a sense of what the Society is all about - and it will deepen the reader's appreciation of the essays included here. And it's also beautifully edited and produced, which is the icing on the cake. This volume is both a rewarding testament to the depth of Lewis studies over the past thirty years, and a case study in the sort of environment that produces excellent scholarship and lively community. Since the Lewis Society is still going strong today, this book is a good sign for the future of Inklings Studies as well as valuable in its own right. It's a must-have addition to the bookshelf of anyone who's seriously interested in Lewis and his fellow Inklings.

Lewis Society is a group founded to discuss the works of C. S. Lewis, including his theology, fiction, and poetry. It is inspired by the Inklings and adopted a lot of their traditions, like retiring to the "Eagle and Child" after most meetings. Members include C. S. Lewis's friends, family, former students, and even his editor/biographer. To make a small sample of this meetings available to the public, Oxford University Press combed through the more than 200 talks given and published a book entitled C. S. Lewis and his Circle. The book is divided into two parts - Essays and Memoirs. The essays focus on philosophy, theology, and literature with the memoirs focusing on memories of both C. S. Lewis and the Inklings. There are some pretty big name contributors in this book including Owen Barfield; Alister McGrath; Rowan Williams; and a personal hero of mine, Metropolitan Kallistos Ware. However, not all the selections were of equal interest to me. Some I had to force myself to get through, but others kept me so engaged that I was sad when they were finished. This is all a matter of personal preference, though. What I find interesting you might find a bore and vice versa.Anyone who has read my other reviews knows I am a sucker for anything Narnia, so of course I found Chapter Ten: "It All Began with a Picture: The Making of C. S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia" to be the most fascinating. In this essay, Lewis's biographer Walter Hooper references a Lewis quote which goes, "At every tick of the clock, in every inhabited part of the world, an unimaginable richness and variety of 'history' falls off the world into total oblivion." This is the basis for Hooper's essay in which he talks about how so little of Lewis's work on Narnia survived because Lewis destroyed most of it. Thankfully, some of it did escape the trash bin, and Hooper shares with us how the stories came into being, grew, and evolved into the series we know and love.Overall, this was a worthwhile read and one that will be of interest to C. S. Lewis fans and to a lesser degree, Inklings fans. I have read many books which offer opinions on Lewis and the Inklings, but few of them had contributions from people who actually knew the man. Therefore, it was refreshing to glean some first hand knowledge of the man. As I said earlier, not everything that captured or even kept my attention, but the essays and memories that did made the book worthwhile to me. If you are a serious fan of C. S. Lewis, like me, then you'll definitely want to check this book out.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This book was everything I wanted and more By Shelley and Son Books I could not have been more pleased with this book. While it mostly provided insights into Lewis and his world, I felt that I received peripheral flashes of light into the Oxford CSL Society as well. Though I have read a significant number of books about Lewis, The Inklings, and their world, not one of the 19 essays in this book failed to provide new insights and information. The more academic essays were helpful especially Kallistos Ware's Sacramentalism in CS Lewis and Charles Williams; Shippey's the Lewis Diaries; and Hooper's It All Began with a Picture. But the memoirs were even better. Vicar Ronald Head's modest and straight forward account of having CS Lewis as a parishioner was truly delightful. Walter Hooper always adds something new to our understanding of Lewis as he does in The Inklings. But my favorite is by the man I find so fascinating, Peter Bide. I don't think a humbler servant of God could exist. His account of officiating at the marriage of Lewis and Davidman is just charming. Surely there are more presentations to the Society that can be gotten into print. I hope so.
