Society said they were insane, and in 1954, that was enough to put someone away in an asylum and separate them from the world. Even here, though, it was possible for souls to flourish. Jakie was one such soul. He was all but lost until he met the girl. She is locked away in a cellar room, but he can feel her presence by imagining he is a small bird visiting her through a hole he has made in a stone wall. He spends hours whistling a cardinal's song to her and she learns to whistle it back to him. She doesn't even know that Jakie exists, only the bird, but their communication is changing her. And the overwhelming, protective love that Jakie feels for the girl will compel him to find more of himself than he ever knew there was – and through this, he will alter their worlds profoundly. A remarkable exploration of the spirit, a sharp indictment of our blindness to what makes us human, and an unforgettable portrait of the power of the will, THE BIRD BOX will move you in ways you never anticipated.

Contrary to some of the beliefs "out there" individuals with mental health illnesses can be very intelligent, and capable of exp By Paradigm It is clear that the author Steele has extensively researched the information around the asylum this book is based on, even to the extent of personally visiting the facility. The Bird Box is a real eye opener as to the horrendous injustices that were forced upon helpless souls which today would never be considered to be insane individuals! Contrary to some of the beliefs "out there" individuals with mental health illnesses can be very intelligent, and capable of experiencing many emotions including intense "hurt". The individuals living in the asylum would have been some of these! The characters which would have been considered to be insane and needing to be locked up all had something valuable to offer and were unique in their own way, providing benefits in their own special way to the group. Jakie was an example of this with his knowledge of herbs and mushrooms to aid in the healing of the patients ailments. The Bird Box is a story of truth woven together in a magical manner. The ending is such a surprise and exhilaration that you find yourself almost running behind the car and willing it to go faster to ensure that these two lovely people will be successful in their escape! Curious about a sequel and how it would unfold!

The Bird Box sensitively captures the experience of human beings held against their will, some for reasons not justifiable in the context of today’s understanding of mental illness. What I found most fascinating though was how the characters, their interactions, and their challenges resonated across the ages and their circumstances. I expected the novel to criticize the treatment of patients and I expected to see cruelty, contempt, and venality. I didn’t expect a love story, or to laugh out loud, or the compassion, kindness and loyalty of inmates and staff. The Bird box was at times dark, at times inspiring, and ultimately a hugely satisfying read.

Steele creates troubled yet lovable characters and a believable story that gives us a unique glimpse inside the minds of those society has locked away. Readers are shocked to learn of the extremely cruel treatment and experiments performed on those deemed different or difficult to manage. We can easily see that the author is fascinated by human nature and passionate about giving a voice to those so often unheard. She is a great believer in the power and resilience of the human spirit.A captivating story I won't soon forget!
