1When the night came, it came fast. The sky yellowed, like a week-old bruise, and then the sun began its descent into the desert floor, dropping out of the clouds as if it were falling. The further it fell, the quicker the sky changed, until the sun was gone from view and all that remained was a smear of red cloud, like a bloodstain above the Mojave.

The city limits emerged from the darkness about twenty minutes later: to start with just small, single-story satellite towns, street lights flickering in the shadows either side of the Interstate; then, as the 15 carved its way through the Southern Highlands, a brighter, more persistent glow. Housing estates, strip malls and vast tracts of undeveloped land, illuminated by billboards and the orange tang of sodium lights; and then the neon: casinos, motels and diners, unfurling beyond the freeway. Finally, as I came off the Interstate at Exit 36, I saw the Strip for the first time, its dazzling, monolithic structures rising out of the flatness of the desert, like a star going supernova.

Even a quarter of a mile short of its parking garage, I knew the Mandalay Bay would be a step up from the last time I’d stayed in Las Vegas. On my first trip to the city five years before, the newspaper had taken care of the booking and left me to rot in a downtown grind joint called The George. “George,” I later found out, was casino lingo for a good tipper. Except the only people doing the gambling at The George were the homeless, placing 25c minimum bets on the blackjack tables out front so they could scrape together enough for a bottle of something strong. This time, as I nosed the hired Dodge Stratus into a space on a huge rooftop parking lot, I passed eight-story signs advertising a televised UFC fight at the hotel in January, and I knew I’d made the right decision to book it myself: last time out, the only fighting I’d seen anywhere close to The George was of the fully drunk kind.

I turned off the ignition and as the engine and radio died, the sound of the Las Vegas Freeway filled the car; a low, unbroken hum, like the rumble of an approaching storm. Further off, disguised against the sky except for the metronomic wink of its taillight, was a plane making its final approach into McCarran. As I sat there, a feeling of familiarity washed over me, of being in this city, of hearing these same sounds, five years before. I remembered a lot from that trip, but mostly I just remembered the noise and the lights.

I opened the door of the Dodge and got out.

The night was cool, but not unpleasant. Popping the trunk, I grabbed my overnight bag and headed across the lot. Inside, the hotel was just as loud, the cars and planes and video screens replaced by the incessant ding, ding, ding of slot machines. I waited in line for the front desk, watching as a young couple in their twenties started arguing with one another. By the time I was handed my room card, I was ready for silence—or as close as I could get.

I showered, changed, and raided the minibar, then called Derryn to let her know I’d arrived okay. We chatted for a while. She’d found it hard to adapt to our new life on the West Coast initially: we had no friends here, she had no job, and in our Santa Monica apartment block our neighbors operated a hermetically sealed clique. Gradually, though, things were changing. Back home, she’d been an A&E nurse for twelve years before giving it up to come out to the States with me, and that experience had landed her a short-term contract at a surgery a block from where we lived. She was only taking blood and helping doctors patch up wounds—much more sedate than the work she’d been doing back in London—but she loved it. It got her out meeting people, and it brought in a little money, plus she got weekends off too, which meant she could go to the beach.

“You going to spend all our money, Raker?” she asked after a while.

“Not tonight. Maybe tomorrow.”

“Do you even know how to play cards?”

“I know how to play Snap.”

I could tell she was smiling. “I’d love to be a fly on the wall when you sidle up to the blackjack table pretending you know what you’re doing.”

“I do know what I’m doing.”

“You can’t even play Monopoly.”

“My biggest fan talks me up again.”

She laughed. “You’ll have to take me with you next time.”

“I will.”

“I’d love to see Vegas.”

I turned on the bed and looked out through the window. Millions of lights winked back through the glass. “I know. I’ll bring you here one day, I promise.”---At one-thirty, I was still awake, even if I didn’t understand why. I’d been up until four the previous night filing a story, was fried after the five-hour drive down from LA—but I just couldn’t drop off. Eventually, I gave up trying, got dressed and headed downstairs.

When the elevator doors opened, it was like time had stood still: the foyer, the sounds of the slots, the music being piped through speakers, it was all exactly the same as I’d left it. The only thing missing was the couple screaming at one another. This was the reason casinos didn’t put clocks up: day, night, it was all the same, like being in stasis. You came in and your body clock disengaged. I looked at my watch again and saw it was closing in on two—but it may as well have been midmorning. Men and women were wandering around in tracksuits and shorts like they’d just come from the tennis courts.

I headed to a bar next to the hotel lobby. Even at one-fifty in the morning I had plenty of company: a couple in their sixties, a woman talking on her phone in a booth, a guy leaning over a laptop, and a group of five men sitting at one of the tables, laughing raucously at something one of them had said. Sliding in at the stools, I ordered a beer, picked at a bowl of nuts and flicked through a copy of the Las Vegas Sun that had been left behind. The front-page story neatly echoed the one I’d been sent down to follow up: Las Vegas, the bulletproof city. While some analysts were predicting a recession inside the next twelve months, America’s gaming capital was set to make a record eight billion dollars.

About ten minutes later, as I got to the sports pages, a guy sat down beside me at the bar and ordered another round of drinks. I looked up, he looked back at me, and then he returned to his table with a tray full of shots. A couple of seconds later, a faint memory surfaced, and—as I tried to grasp at it—a feeling of recognition washed over me: I knew him. I turned on my stool and glanced back over my shoulder. The man placed the tray down on the table—and then looked back at me. He knows me too. There was a moment of hesitation for both of us, paused at each end of the room—but then it seemed to click for him, a smile broke out on his face and he returned to me.

“David?”

As soon as he spoke, the memory became fully formed: Lee Wilkins. We’d grown up together, lived in the same village, gone to the same school—and we’d left the same sixth-form college and never spoken since. Now, almost twenty years later, here he was: different from how I remembered, but not that different. More weight around his face and middle, hair shaved, dark stubble lining his jaw, but otherwise the same guy: five-ten, stocky, a scar to the left of his nose where he’d fallen out of a tree we’d been climbing.

“Lee?”

“Yes!” An even bigger smile spread across his face and we shook hands. “Bloody hell,” he said. “I thought when I saw you, ‘He looks familiar,’ but I just never figured . . .”

“Are you on holiday here?”

“No,” he said, perching himself on the stool next to me. “I live here now. Been in Vegas for two years; been in the States for seven.”

“Doing what?”

“You remember I wanted to be an actor?”

“I remember that, yeah.”

He stopped; smiled. “Well, it didn’t work out.”

“Oh.”

“No, I mean it didn’t work out in the way I thought it would. I spent my first five years in LA trying to catch a break, waiting tables and turning up at auditions. Got some minor roles here and there but nothing anyone would have seen me in. Then I started compering at this comedy club in West Hollywood, and things got a little crazy. Ended up going down so well, I became the act. That went on for a year, then I was offered a job down here in Vegas, as the main compere at this big comedy club just off the Strip. A few months back, I was offered an even better job by the guy who runs the entertainment in the MGM hotels, so now I travel between here, the Luxor, New York, the Mirage, the Grand, all of them. It’s been pretty amazing.”

“Wow. That’s incredible, Lee. Congratulations.”

“Right place, right time, I guess.”

“Or you’re just really good at it.”

He shrugged. “I can’t believe it’s you. Here.”

“I know.”

“So what are you doing in Vegas?”

“You remember I wanted to be a journalist?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, that did work out.”

“Fantastic. Are you working now?”

“Yeah.” I looked around me. “Well, I’m working tomorrow.”

“You live here?”

“No. I’m just down from LA for the night.”

“Doing what?”

I tapped the front page of the Sun. “Writing about money.”

“Are you a correspondent or something?”

“Just until the elections are over next year, and then I head back to London. The paper’s pretty excited about the idea of Obama, which is why I’m out here so early.”

“Anyone’s better than Bush, right?”

“I guess we’ll see next year.”

“How come you’re based on the West Coast?”

“I was based in DC last time I was out, but this time I’m here for much longer. So, I’m spending six months in LA to cover the buildup from California, and then I move to DC to cover the last six months from Capitol Hill.” I nodded at the Sun again. “Thing is, at the moment, it’s still early days, so there’s nothing to talk about. Which is why I’m down here trying to justify my existence.”

“Not a bad place to come for a night.”

“Noisy.”

He laughed. “Yeah, I guess it is.”

We ordered more beers and sat at the bar and talked, covering the nineteen years since we’d left home. I’d grown up on a farm, in the hills surrounding our village, but when I headed to London and it dawned on my parents that I wasn’t going to be taking over the running of it anytime soon, they started winding it down and paying into a cottage.

“And then Mum died.”

Lee gave a solemn nod of the head.

I shrugged. “It was pretty much all downhill from there: I helped Dad get the farm sold and moved him into the village, but he could never really handle it on his own.”

“Is he still around?”

“No. He died almost two years ago.”

I hadn’t been back home since.

The conversation moved on and got brighter, Lee telling me how his mum had remarried and now lived in Torquay, how his sister was a teacher, how he was still single and loving it, even if his mum wanted him to settle down. “They flew out earlier in the year, and Mumbasically asked me when I was going to get married, once a day for three weeks.” He rolled his eyes, and then asked, “So how long have you been married to Diane?” He was busy polishing off his fifth bottle of beer, so I forgave him the slip-up. We were both a little worse for wear: him— two bottles ahead of me—on alcohol, me on a lack of sleep.

“Derryn.”

“Shit.” He laughed. “Sorry. Derryn.”

The bar was quieter now, all the men he’d been drinking with earlier off in the casino somewhere. “It’ll be thirteen years this year.”’

“Wow.”

“Yeah, it’s been good.”

He nodded. “I admire you, man. Envy you too.” He nodded a second time and then sank the rest of his beer. “And now I’ve got to use the can.”

He rocked from side to side slightly as he shifted away from the bar, and patted me gently on the shoulder as he passed. Then he headed to the toilets.

And I never saw him again.

Too complicated, too coincidental, too contrived By booklover343 I enjoy books about missing persons cases and picked up this novel because of the description on the book jacket. To me, though, it felt as if the missing persons aspect of the story was a minor part of the plot.David Raker is asked by a former friend/girlfriend to look into the disappearance of her sister's family. One day the entire family (husband, wife, and two daughters) simply disappeared. This part of the story, however, does not start for a couple of chapters into the book when body parts have already washed up onto a beach not far from David's home.David is intrigued by the missing persons case and takes it on (apparently at no charge) and learns that the police did a cursory investigation and then sort of dropped the case. Somehow David is able to dig deeper than the police investigators. One other reviewer mentioned that this is a pretty violent book, and I have to admit that is true. It's hard to believe that an unpaid investigator would keep going when folks around him are dying, he is beaten and nearly killed on several occasions, and the whole scenario just keeps getting more complicated. After getting about three-fourths of the way through, I had the feeling that it would never end. It felt to me that the author had included just too many plot twists and turns and had to take the time to unravel them. Some of the twists did seem to far-fetched to me.

After a near death encounter David returns to his home village to recover. After a body washes up on the beach David is asked by a former girlfriend for a favor. Her sister Carrie, her husband Paul, and nieces Annabelle and Olivia have disappeared. Would he please find them?NEVER COMING BACK introduces Raker on his first trip to Las Vegas as an investigative journalist in 2007. We next meet him five years later at his parents’ old cottage in Devon recovering from a near death encounter with a knife. When a body washes up on the beach it stirs up the village and leads to an encounter with Emily, a girlfriend from his late teens. She wants David to find her sister and her sister’s family. They disappeared without a trace under odd circumstances over a year ago.David isn’t quite up to snuff but agrees to see what he can turn up.NEVER COMING BACK is quick paced with plenty of twists, turns, and surprises to keep readers guessing right up to the end. Despite changing viewpoints and alternating between past and present it isn’t hard to follow. The settings are descriptive giving readers a sense of immediacy and “being there”. The characters are extremely well fleshed and believable. The writing, mystery, characters, and location all add up to an absorbing reading experience. NEVER COMING BACK is hard to put down once you’ve picked it up.That being said I did have a few issues. The lesser issue is Cornell, the villain in NEVER COMING BACK. Cold and unfeeling, killing without compunction, there’s little Cornell holds dear but he’s willing to kill anyone who threatens it, whatever it is. Cornell and the fear he evokes in those who encounter him becomes heavy handed and repetitive. My biggest issue is that here in the States NEVER COMING BACK is the first David Raker release; however it isn’t the first in the series. There are five years worth of Raker’s experiences missing. He’s a widower, avoiding Liz (whoever she is), and recovering from a nearly fatal stab wound to the stomach. What was the catalyst that turned him from investigative reporter to missing person investigator? Why does he feel so responsible for the missing? How does he support himself and pay people like Spike? What are the origins of his contentious relationship with Healy? What case led to the man who took numerous lives and almost took Raker’s? What about Liz and their past? Obviously I have a lot of questions. I felt the loss of those years and the evolution of David from the man introduced in Las Vegas to the convalescent re-introduced five years later in Devon. I’d love to find the prior books and get caught up before I read further. If that isn’t possible it won’t prevent me reading David Raker’s continuing investigations but I’ll always have that niggling sense of missing pieces.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I like the premise of finding the missing By Luanne Ollivier Tim Weaver is a best selling author in the UK, but Never Coming Back is his first release in North America. Never Coming Back is actually the fourth book in Weaver's David Raker series. Raker, a former journalist, is now a missing persons investigator - indeed, he is driven by the need to 'find the lost.' While visiting family in Devon, Raker is approached by an old girlfriend. She's heard about Raker's talents and wants to hire him as her sister and family have gone missing. More than missing - it's like they've disappeared. Everything in the house was left, including dinner on the table and the family dog - and not a trace of them since. The police investigation seems to have hit a dead end. Raker is intrigued by the case and agrees to look into it. I admit to feeling slightly lost in the first few chapters as there are two seeming protagonists. Colm Healy is a retired Met officer who is living with Raker. Reference is made to past cases and occurrences in the beginning. However as the book progressed, I quickly caught up with who was who and realized that Raker was the lead. (But I found Healy obnoxious and abrasive and I wasn't quite sure of his role in this book. It would be interesting to read the past three books to see what has gone on before) I too was hooked by the missing family. Where could they have gone? Taken or gone by their own decision? Weaver tantalizingly includes italicized chapters from the past, starting eighteen months ago and moving forward until past and present meet. The first entry had me wondering how in the world this would tie in with the family's disappearance. The who is revealed, but the why is the largest part of the plot and definitely kept me guessing. Weaver's plot is big and far reaching - the novel has two settings - England and Las Vegas. Weaver does a great job with bringing his settings to life. (I was fascinated with the abandoned village in England) Weaver's tale is dark and gritty, with a violent antagonist who is particularly chilling I thought a few of the plot twists were a bit far-fetched, but this didn't detract from my rapid page turning. The ending was great, with a last turn that I did not see coming. I appreciate being surprised in the final pages of a book. I like Raker as a character, as well as the missing persons idea. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another book by this author. The fifth in the series, Fall From Grace, releases in the UK mid August.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The book makes no sense! By Campingmom First, the title is inaccurate. The "12" in the title refers to the number of chapters, each of which have a limited amount of scattered information. There are no garden designs in the book.Second - I don't know if the author's first language is English, as many of the sentences and phrases make no sense.Seriously, this book is NOT worth the listed cost. Don't waste your time or money!

The information was good enough and total content, but some of thesentences make no sense.

From an exhilarating new voice, a stunning debut novel - which Jonathan Safran Foer calls as "lyrical as a poem, psychologically rich as a thriller".

In the beautiful, barren landscape of the Far North, under the ever-present midnight sun, Frances and Yasha are surprised to find refuge in each other. Their lives have been upended - Frances has fled heartbreak and claustrophobic Manhattan for an isolated artist colony; Yasha arrives from Brooklyn to fulfill his beloved father's last wish: to be buried "at the top of the world. They have come to learn how to be alone. But in Lofoten, an archipelago of six tiny islands in the Norwegian Sea, 95 miles north of the Arctic Circle, they form a bond that fortifies them against the turmoil of their distant homes, offering solace amidst great uncertainty.

With nimble and sure-footed prose, Dinerstein reveals that no matter how far we travel to claim our own territory, it is ultimately love that gives us our place in the world.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Unrelentingly quirky By Sophia “The Sunlit Night” has an intriguing premise. Frances and Yasha are two young people who have come to Lofoten, a remote chain of islands in the Norwegian Sea, each with a personal quest. Frances is trying to figure out how to move forward in her life, following the implosion of both her relationship and her family. Yasha has come to fulfill his father’s wishes to “be buried at the top of the world.”It’s an engaging concept and author Rebecca Dinerstein is a gifted writer – she really makes her characters, and, even more so, the setting, come alive. It's easy to see that she is also a poet - she uses words beautifully. What I found less enjoyable was the quirkiness of the characters were and how fraught with drama their interactions. I found it overpowering. As I read the book, I actually found myself getting tired, and longed for some normalcy here and there. This may be my own bias, but, for me, quirkiness is kind of like a spice – added to give a dish or a book nuance and flavor, but not necessarily something to be ingested in large quantities on its own.Other readers may find it whimsical and appealing, which I also did, in parts.I will definitely check out Ms. Dinerstein’s future works to see what she comes up with next.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL! By David Keymer This is a book about three characters, only two of whom are humans. There are the little touches. Frances and Yasha are the humans. Norway is the third. It’s a book of exquisite small touches, never too much but not too little. Yasha describes his father, Vassily, the baker. His father was sometimes eccentric, but never insane; not terribly attractive, but adorable, easy to adore. He smiled when he had amused himself and shouted when he was mad. His pants were yellow from dozens of broken eggs. [He was a baker, after all.] His hair was gray and long around his ears. His core, Yasha suspected, was made of peace.“His core [his son suspected] was made of peace.” What a lovely phrase that is! And it keeps on the same way through the rest of this extraordinary book, which never overreaches but in its modest way, says lovely things about what it is to be human, young and uncertain about where you’re headed. On the eve of her graduation from college, Frances’s near-perfect, future-ahead boyfriend dumps her. The scene where he does it is subtle but knockdown hilarious (I don’t know how you can convey both of these feelings at the same time but Dinerstein does it.) This is when her parents decide to divorce too and boycott her sister’s impending wedding. (The groom isn’t Jewish enough for them.) Frances can’t take it. She flees new York for an artists’ colony as far away as she can possibly get: Lofoten, a tiny island in Norway ninety-five miles north of the Arctic Circle. Frances is an artist, or wants to be one. In Lofoten she can indulge her fascination with color. Indeed, the whole book is suffused with color –brown wood, marigold, a lemon color sun rising over lime-green grass, a yellow house with windows and doors trimmed in white, “to add a little mildness, to serve as cream,” the color of the sky overhead in this Land of the Midnight Sun changing with the hour and day. Yasha? He’s there to bury his father, whose last wish was to be buried “at the top of the world." In Lofoten, these two temporarily dislocated souls meet. They strike sparks off each other, have a romance of sorts, and end up coming to some sort of terms with their lives. You can learn some of this just by reading the book’s liner notes.. What you won’t get from the liner notes is how lovely the story is, and how economically and elegantly it’s told. Even the minor characters are given their due: including Yasha’s mother, who by any ordinary standard of judgment is a word I’m supposed to avoid in a review written for family consumption. This is Rebecca Dinerstein’s first novel but her second book to be published. The first was a bilingual collection of Norwegian poems. She is a talent: she can tell a story and tell a poem, and sometimes, in this lovely book, the two almost become mixed together.

12 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Life as a web of human connectedness By B. Case “The Sunlit Night” is an unconventional, brilliant, and humorous literary novel by debut novelist Rebecca Dinerstein. It tells the story of the summer that Frances and Yasha met and fell in love, or as the Norwegian’s would say, “they became happy in each other.”Frances is a 21-year-old college graduate who’s majored in fine art. When she’s not away at college, she lives with her parents and sister in a tiny one-bedroom flat in Manhattan. Yasha is a 17-year-old high-school graduate from Brooklyn. He lives in with his dad in a two-room flat above their bakery. The fated lovers meet during high summer on the Norwegian island of Lofoten, 95 miles north of the Arctic Circle. It’s an isolated and otherworldly place of stunning beauty. There are few people, but those who do call it home are an eccentric and solitary breed. Of course in summer, the great allure is the omnipresent midnight sun.Frances has gone to Lofoten to work as an intern for a Norwegian artist who has spent his life working only with the color yellow. He is making a public art installation out of a large barn and hopes this project will earn him funding by the Norwegian government as a public work of art in support of the public good. Frances anticipates learning “something about the world’s brightness from the man and his yellow paint.” She also hopes to “learn to be alone.”She succeeds at both; then Yasha comes to Lofoten. He comes to bury his father whose dying wish was to be buried at the “Top of the World” near where the Sami people live. As a Russian youth, he was very fond of one particular Sami hunter. The novel takes place in the present day and is narrated alternately from both main characters’ personal points of view (Frances in first person and Yasha in third person).Don’t expect this book to be any kind of normal love story. Typically love stories have a lot of tension and suspense. In addition, there are frequent scenes of great tenderness and passion, and the lovers may experience considerable danger and difficulty on the way to finding one another. Often, they become separated, but somehow find their way back to each other in the end. All of these separate elements are in this novel, but only very subtly; none is pronounced in the usual fashion. In fact, perhaps it is wrong to call this a love story, because the true focus of this novel is a celebration of life in general, rather than a celebration of two lovers. It’s a novel that focuses much more on the vast intricate web of human connections that have created the situation where the two young lovers can meet, rather than on the heat and heart of their love. The author is keen to persuade us that the purpose of life is this fragile spinning of a web of human connections; nothing just happens without being part of the web. As a result, virtually all the secondary characters in this novel are vitally important to the trajectory of the novel and each serves an important role moving the theme along…helping to spin the web. No detail about their individual lives is unimportant. What happens in this book is odd and wonderful, not because it is full of the pulse of love, but because it is full of the pulse of humanity. It shows us that the meaning of life is to be found in each person’s web of human connectedness. Was it appropriate for the love story to take a back seat to the theme? Could this novel have been better with more emphasis on the love story? More tension, suspense, and passion? Could this book have had a compelling love story as well as a strong literary theme? Frankly, I don’t know. What I do know is that I thoroughly enjoyed this literary novel as it was. It’s subtle, sparkling, wise, and accomplished. I loved the insightful humor. I took pleasure in the author’s literary craftsmanship. I loved the large quirky cast of characters and found everything about them fascinating and fresh. I came away from the book more content and happy in my own body and with my own life. That’s something very special. So is this book.

Ava Schaffer never felt like she belonged where she was born, on the vast open prairie of Western Kansas. The artist and dreamer planned to remedy that after high school graduation, by packing a moving truck and escaping to New York, but her mother’s cancer diagnosis forced her to stay. Their relationship always a struggle, reversing the roles of mother and daughter, as Ava became the sole caretaker of the difficult woman, tested the very edge of familial love’s limits. After a three year battle, her mother succumbs to the unforgiving disease and Ava is left alone to exit the reclusiveness of her current life and attempt to rejoin the gossip laden, high school football worshipping, get married and have babies, small town society she grew up in. Ava’s childhood best friend, Pode Wagner, a humbly practical farmer, helps her become reacquainted with a community of long lost friends. As he provides epically introverted Ava the companionship and support she didn’t realize she missed so desperately, Ava finds herself accidentally enthralled with the charming, yet broken, Lucas Ellis, a world traveled former military man and the current county deputy. Imagining several different futures, none of which include leaving her hometown, Ava’s new life begins to crash down around her as her alcoholic father slides. Again at the juncture of self-preservation and self-sacrifice, Ava suffers an earthshattering loss, discovers a life altering truth, and makes an unexpected decision.

The Sky After the Rain, by Lindsay Bergstrom

About the Author Born and raised on a farm outside of the small Kansas town of Clyde, I have been telling and writing stories for as long as I can remember and according to my family, even before. They claim that not long after I learned to talk, they would pull my highchair up to the kitchen table and I would regale them with tales of talking animals and barnyard shenanigans. At 19, I bought a guitar and moved to Nashville to learn the art of a different type of storytelling, songwriting. Kicking around in the music scene for several years, I sustained myself with jobs ranging from teaching classes about blenders, to donning a hoop skirt and giving tours of a Civil War Mansion, to selling tickets to traveling Broadway Shows. The only thing that stays the same in life is that it constantly changes and as mine did, I found myself headed west to Colorado. Refocusing on a writing career, I have spent the last couple of years churning out short stories and writing and revising my debut novel, The Sky After the Rain. Though it disappointingly does not include any talking animals, I think it is still pretty good!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I am in love with this book! By A.G. Aragon As I sit here and write this review, I have to admit that I’m so sad to be done with this book. It’s been such a long time since I’ve read something that lived and breathed off the page even when the words weren’t right in front of me. One line in particular even stays with me now. “They lived big lives for such a small town.” Lindsay Bergstrom’s writing is just that…big and powerful, but artfully masked behind characters that aren’t larger than life, but that I could relate to – not because I’ve ever met anyone like them before, but because I want to be lucky enough to do so. “The Sky After The Rain” is so many things, that all I can think to do is say what it isn’t. It isn’t a trivial story with a predetermined ending that you will see coming. It isn’t a fast-paced read where you want to scan past the imagery and the honest, believable descriptions of its multifaceted characters. It isn’t a tangle of chapters that are forgettable and numbing. Instead, it is full of beautiful insights, heartbreaking realities, and familiar life lessons. It is absolutely everything a great book should be. Buy it. Read it. And keep an eye on the amazingly talented Lindsay Bergstrom. She’s the real deal – an author who truly understands the art of storytelling and whose words will have an impact long after you’ve read the very last page.

With such wonderful visuals and realistic characters, I immediately felt like I was right there in Flynn with Ava, anxious to find out what her decision was going to be. I thought I'd figured out how it would all end, only to be second-guessing myself part way through. I wasn't even sure how I actually WANTED it to turn out! I promise you will find yourself thinking about Ava, Pode, Ellis and the others throughout the day, wanting to get back to the story to see what happens next. Congratulations Lindsay! The book is fantastic, and I am so proud of you!

Such an original story, town and characters. The writer is fantastic at painting the scene. You feel like you are there and know these people. I LOVE Pode! I want to make a shirt that says "Team Pode"! Why you ask?....read the book! :) It is one of my favorite books and always will be!

The Untold, by Courtney Collins

From Booklist This moving debut novel was inspired by the life of Australian Elizabeth Jessie Hickman, a runaway convict born in 1820. In Collins poetically reimagined tribute, 22-year-old Jessie is on the run after killing her brutal husband. She has recently given birth to a stillborn child whose spirit is somehow tethered to her mother and who narrates the story. Jessie has already lived a dramatic life; she once worked as a circus acrobat and then as a horse rustler but is now desperate to escape the posse of men who want to hang her for murder. While she runs, she thinks of her short, sweet relationship with the Aboriginal stockman Jack Brown, whose gentle ways were a welcome relief from the beatings administered by her drunken husband. She finds an idyllic camp in the mountains made up of desperate boys who steal horses and thinks she might finally have found a refuge, but the lawmen are not far behind. This intense read, with dark undertones of death and foreboding, contains breathtaking descriptions of the Australian bush and a lyrical homage to Jessie’s desperate quest for freedom. --Joanne Wilkinson

Review “This extraordinary novel—propelled by the dark, rich talents of a truly brilliant writer—dazzles, staggers, and amazes.”—Elizabeth Gilbert, New York Times bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love“A captivating, epic novel that never loses its heart to scope, The Untold is a surreal saga set in a rugged, unforgiving landscape. Courtney Collins paints a devastating portrait of long-shot love.”—Patrick deWitt, author of #1 international bestseller The Sisters Brothers (short-listed for The Man Booker Prize)"Collins’s gripping debut novel is based on a legendary wild woman…A fast-paced, heart-wrenching story that never loses speed, this extraordinary first novel is not to be missed.”—Library Journal (starred review)“The dead have tales to tell, if only we could hear them…Collins richly evokes a heartbreaking emotional terrain, setting it against the sparse, brutal landscape of the Australian Outback.”—Kirkus Reviews“Collins’s poetic language and salty dialogue tell the story of a woman whose life is inextricable from the bleak landscape she not only traverses but also inhabits.”—Publishers Weekly

About the Author Courtney Collins grew up in the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, Australia. She completed her first novel, The Untold, in an old postmaster’s cottage on the Goulburn River in regional Victoria. She now lives in a sea-side town in NSW and is working on her second novel.

It gripped me right from the start, thanks to harrowing prologue and a simple trick in narrative. Inspired by the life of Jessie Hickman, a legendary outlaw in twentieth century Australia, this debut sort of tells the "making" of Jessie the lady bushranger. The prose is beautiful and the vivid and poetic descriptions of bush life amid the adversity are unmatched. We meet Jessie, a woman with a scarred past beset by the misfortune of being forced into employment and then marriage to Fitz, a dubious cattle rancher. She flees after bludgeoning her husband to death and burning her home down, then gave birth prematurely. The child, killed and buried out of mercy, then emerges as the omnipresent narrator, providing us with a close account of Jessie on the chase, revealing her past and casting glances into her future as an outlaw.I loved this approach. I was glued to the pages pretty much straight away. The voice of the baby as the narrator was filled with so much wisdom and empathy for his mother, you can't help but feeling for Jessie, despite of the gruesome acts she does in the book. The author did a great job painting the desperation that has befallen the whole place. Set after the Great War, the men returning from it were pretty much broken men, the economy was sluggish and the desert drier than ever. The only joy one is able to derive from were carnal pleasures. But somehow the darkness in the book did not weigh it down--rather it came across artistically, enhanced in a way a noir movie would have been. Jessie's story is mainly a story of heartbreak, loss and survival. And yet there are moments of tenderness and acts of simple compassion during Jessie's escape that were uplifting. Those were glimmers of hope that kept me coming back to this book even though at times the story got so gut wrenching, I had to stop reading for the day to process everything.I won't reveal the ending here, but it was predictable. After all it's history (well, sort of)! But I must say some of the twists were really unexpected. Some were welcomed, some were a little forced. Jessie's character is well-developed, but some of the other characters seemed a little one dimensional. However, the outstanding quality of this work is marked by Collins ability to capture a realistic picture of what is like to live and survive in the Australian Bush, without losing a certain poetic quality about the prose.Highly recommended.

By Brenda Telford When twenty-two-year-old Jessie was released from prison after serving two years for horse rustling, she immediately began working for Fitzgerald Henry (Fitz) on his property in the vast bush of NSW Australia. This was a condition of her release; she had no say in it at all. Fitz was a cruel and harsh man, and his treatment of Jessie was such that she was desperate to escape her tormenter. When Aboriginal stockman Jack Brown was also hired by Fitz, the two became kindred spirits. Thrust together in the stealing of horses for Fitz, they both wanted to get away from his demanding, threatening and drunken influence. But when Jessie discovered she was pregnant to Fitz, she was terrified - her future looked bleak. And after a frightening night of horror and fear, Jessie frantically headed away from the farm on her beloved horse, Houdini, as fast as she could possibly go. She had done a terrible thing, but she wanted to be free – she must be free; no-one must find her….not even Jack Brown. With the premature birth and subsequent death of her baby, Jessie found herself extremely ill. Delirious, suffering from blood loss and severe dehydration, her thoughts tormented her.As Jessie’s story continued, it was narrated by the spirit of her dead baby. The link between mother and child was strong – as Jessie struggled, her extreme courage shone through. With depth of character, humility and determination, Jessie kept going, trying to stay one step ahead of her pursuers as she headed for the mountains which were beckoning her.Jessie Hickman was a bushranger in Australia in the early twentieth century – Courtney Collins has used her story as an inspiration for The Burial in an unusual but powerful way, with the result being one which had me gripped by the intensity, while at the same time fascinated by the concept. I’ve never read a book quite like this one, but I enjoyed it none the less. A wonderful debut from an Aussie author to watch out for, and one I have no hesitation in recommending.

Life is a Circus, or How to Survive in a Bushman's World By Gail Ofterdinger While reading this tale of the Australian bushwoman, Jesse, I felt that I was sitting around a campfire listening to an elderly, grizzled, cowboy, tell me a tale from the past. Instead, it is Jesse's murdered newborn who is our narrator. Jesse faces horrendous life choices, suffers abuse, makes do, survives prison, rustles cattle, and endures a loveless marriage. Quite a character and a spectacularly intriguing heroine! If an historical account of life in Australia in the early 1920's appeals to you, I highly recommend this book. My thanks to the author and Penguin's First to Read program for a complimentary copy.

Both a sense of urgency and a goodly amount of patience are required for any writer to produce a novel. Moving between these two poles, Jean-Philippe Toussaint here collects a series of short essays on the art of writing, both his own and that of writers he's admired, for example Kafka, Beckett, Dostoyevsky, and Proust. As Toussaint himself has said, "It's only natural for writers... to say a word about how they write and what they owe to great authors."

By Charla Amazing Lace by Sharon Mooney and Cheryl Potter is just that, amazing! The thirteen beautiful lacy patterns range from simple to fairly advanced so there is something for every knitter no matter the skill level. You can really build your lace skills with this book, it's like sitting at the knit shop with Sharon in the chair next to you. If you want to try lace you need this book. What makes this book shine for me are the Designer and Dyer Perspectives with each pattern and the Lessons scattered throughout the book. I’ve never considered why the designer chose that weight, type or colorway of yarn. Does it really matter if it’s striped, splotched, tonal, short or long color repeats? Can I knit lace with it all? The answer is yes, it all depends on the design. The Lessons start with choosing the yarn and correct needle size, the importance of swatching, and how to measure gauge. There is a great lesson on making and picking up wraps and turns, with very detailed clear photos of both the knit and purl sides. You’ll never have unintended holes again! Markers, lifelines, and M1’s are all discussed with clear descriptions and photos, as are many other tips and techniques, as well as how to work from a chart.Of course since it’s Sharon Mooney you learn how to add beads and add some bling and sparkle to your life! I can't wait to cast on several of these beautiful patterns.
