Included in Library Journal's "Books That Buzzed at BookExpo America" Roundup, the first word on titles and trends from Barbara Hoffert, Editor"McGevna's debut novel captures the familiar rhythms of summertime, following young people on the edge of violence."--Kirkus Reviews"A serious, searing debut novel by a wonderful new writer."--Book Riot"The reader knows one of the three will be a victim, but not which one, and we read with our hearts in our throats as we grow closer to each boy....In the aftermath of that day, McGevna shows us how the brutality and tragedy of that event affect the families...There will be justice, of some sort, and even redemption. But, as in real life, there is no happy ending."--Reviewing the Evidence"A gripping exploration of teenage alienation and temporary depravity."--East Hampton Star"All it takes is one or two characters to carry you through to the heartbreaking end--a finale that offers enough hope and redemption to equal the book's climatic horror."--The Chattanoogan"Tremendously affecting....A powerful story about redemption....McGevna is tremendously talented, and created a vivid picture of place and time, populated by characters who are far more complex than you think."--It's Either Sadness or Euphoria"Perhaps we could all use a moment to stop and breathe sometime, before we say or do something we regret. You might find yourself thinking back to this book, long after it's done. And that is the mark of a good book."--A New Day"Here is Matthew McGevna's Little Beasts, a story about growing up in the 1980s and making one's way into the world. It's all here: discovered ambition; poignant exasperation; abundant mistakes and triumphs and regrets. And what turns out to be the bitter downward path to wisdom. Matthew McGevna has given us a great gift. Superb."--Larry Heinemann, author of Paco's Story"Little Beasts is a serious novel about lost teenagers with questionable futures and just about no adult guidance. Inevitably they take their confused and violent emotions out on each other, which leads to tragedy. A serious and compelling debut."--Robert Ward, author of Red Baker"Mathew McGevna's Little Beasts gives us the people of Turnbull, New York, as their own tragedy begins to envelop them. And in the sure hands of this gifted young novelist, we know them well enough to feel the history in our nerve-endings--we live it. This is a brave, beautiful book."--Richard Bausch, author of Before, During, AfterThe latest from Akashic's Kaylie Jones Books imprint.Turnbull is a working-class town full of weary people who struggle to make ends meet. Evictions, alcoholism, and random violence are commonplace. In the heat of July 1983, when eight-year-olds James Illworth, Dallas Darwin, and Felix Cassidy leave their homes to play in the woods, they have to navigate between the potentially violent world of angry adults and even angrier teens. Little do they know that within a few short hours, one of them will lay dead, after a bit of playful bullying from older teens escalates to tragedy.Loosely based on a real crime that took place on Long Island in 1979, Little Beasts is a panorama of a poor, mostly white neighborhood surrounded by the affluent communities of the East End. After the murder, the novel's main characters must come to grips with the aftermath, face down the decisions they've made, and reestablish their faith in the possibility of a better world.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. writing and descriptions are great By She Treads Softly Little Beasts by Matthew McGevna is a highly recommended novel loosely based on a real story.Eight year olds James Illworth, Dallas Darwin, and Felix Cassidy are doing what any kids would do in the summer of 1983 in Turnbull, a working-class Long Island town. They watch an eviction. They assign themselves characters to play Star Wars. They find a stray dog as a mascot. They play in the woods by their houses. They plan to steal fort building materials from another gang of kids (and get into a fight). They try to appease the adults in their lives, answer if their mothers yell for them, and avoid the sullen, angry teens that always seem to be hanging out. They are busy children, serious about their friendship and playing with each other.David Westwood is hanging out with his friends, other 15 year old teens. David is a budding artist, but finds himself at odds with others at his high school. Other students have given him the nickname "Red" and have accused him of hating America and being a Communist. David doesn't agree with their assessment, but he plays the role. Although he has a group of friends, he is really a loner, trying to fit in, looking for acceptance. He pines for Julia, who may or may not be his girlfriend. While our group of eight year olds has a horrible fight with other kids, the teens are struggling with their own social issues. The next day the two groups meet with fatal results.McGevna does a great job describing the feelings of the kids out and about, trying to stay out of the way of trouble and doing their own busy work of being children in the summer. When the view switches to the teens, he also manages to capture the bullying and teen angst David is experiencing. Although it is well written and the inner workings and pitfalls that must be avoided in both the lives of the kids and the teens is clearly portrayed, I wasn't sure exactly where the novel was heading. There is a lot of lead up to the tragedy, which doesn't happen until you are well into the second half of the book.In the end this is a fine summer novel or a great airplane book. It will keep you reading, the writing and descriptions are great, and, although you have to wait a bit too long for the horrible turn of events to happen, McGevna skillfully handles the subsequent aftermath.Disclosure: My Kindle edition was courtesy of Akashic Books for review purposes.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable By Danielle The characters are really well developed. The writing becomes almost poetic at times when the author is describing people, places or things. I really enjoyed this book and like that it has some basis in a factual incident that took place in an area I am familiar with. Can't wait to see what else he writes.

I could not put it down! I loved how attached you got to the characters, a rarity in novels these days, so that you felt genuinely happy, sad, angry and horrified along with them. I was really happy with how well written it was and that it wasn't riddled with cheesy dialogue. I can't wait to see what else the author has in store!

The fact that Lindsey Archibald just had her own wedding herself shows that her advice will be up to date and modern. The author goes into great detail on every important aspect of planning your wedding, and she focuses on the tips and tricks that will help you cut costs. There are so many decisions to make for the big day so it’s nice to have a helping hand. I really liked the songs she recommended for the different parts of the wedding. I don’t know much about flowers so that section was also very helpful.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Really Good By Jen M. Great guide to wedding planning on a budget By TFLReader I was just married less than two years ago and we chose to have a small, budget, wedding and an extravagant honeymoon. I wouldn't change a thing but would be at a loss to tell anyone else how we accomplished this so I'll leave that to someone more qualified. Author Lindsey Archibald has written a fantastic book on doing just this with her "Bunny Boiler to Bride" and she gives the reader everything they need to know to plan a wedding that won't break their budget. From choosing a dress and music to writing vows and the emotional issues that may come up, no stone is left unturned here and this is a very worthwhile read for anyone with wedding bells in their future. Well done. (This is an unbiased book review and the opinions given here are 100% my own.)

Review

“In this delightful comic mystery, the merging of the puzzle of the crime with the allusions to the movie Double Indemnity and Cora's convoluted conversations engages to the end.” ―Booklist

“Once again, Hall manages to perfectly integrate fun puzzles with an entertaining mystery in the latest entry of his Puzzle Lady series....Cora Felton...is as lovable as ever, with the attitude of an incredibly sassy grandmother.” ―RT Book Reviews (4 stars)

By Mark Baker - Carstairs Considers The winter blues have definitely hit Cora Felton, and she is anxious to find anything she can to get her out of the house. Unfortunately, the town of Bakerhaven is having an unusually quiet spell when it comes to crime. The only crime is a robbery of the local liquor store by someone in an Iron Man mask. Then lawyer Becky Baldwin gets a new client who wants her husband followed to see if he is having an affair. Even worse, this client thinks that her husband has taken out a life insurance policy on her with a healthy double indemnity clause. Naturally, Becky turns to Cora to conduct the surveillance. Almost immediately, Cora finds the proof she’s looking for. However, the wife hesitates when confronted with the truth. And then things really explode. The books in the series can be hit or miss, but I really enjoyed this one. Yes, the book does feature the word play and banter I love, but that also served to advance the story and wasn’t just the characters showing off. The story took some interesting twists and turns along the way to the climax, which was a bit rushed, but that’s often the case in the series. The characters have never been super developed, but they are developed enough to be fun, and there is an interesting new development for Cora in the book.Fans of the series will delight in this fun and, dare I say it, puzzling mystery.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Delightfully Weird Cora Felton Solves a Twisted Murder Case in Parnell Hall's Superlative Cozy, "Puzzled Indemnity" By J. B. Hoyos In Bakerhaven, Connecticut, Cora Felton is known as the famous Puzzle Lady. She is hired by attorney Becky Baldwin to follow insurance salesman Hank Wells. His wife, Brittany Wells, suspects him of adultery and plotting her demise. Hank bought a double-indemnity life insurance policy; if his wife dies, he receives two million dollars. In order to nail Hank for adultery, Cora convinces her slimy ex-husband, Melvin Crabtree, to blackmail him. Soon afterwards, a car explodes in Bakerhaven's town center, killing its sole passenger. Cora finds herself up to her elbows in deception, lies and red herrings. Parnell Hall`s "Puzzled Indemnity" is one of the best Cora Felton novels I've read in a long time. The plot was excellent. Besides having a lot of silly, slapstick humor, the novel has a great mystery that is truly baffling. Based on the classic black-and-white Billy Wilder film, "Double Indemnity" (Double Indemnity), this latest Puzzle Lady caper moves at a swift pace. It is chock full of cliff hangers that enticed me to keep reading more. Cora is as hardheaded, overbearing, obnoxious and lustful as ever. She still pines and whines after Sergeant Crowley of the NYPD. Because Hank Wells works in Manhattan, Cora is able to hook up with the sergeant. Unfortunately, she learns he has a female house guest, Stephanie, who insists she and Crowley are just friends. The paranoid, overly suspicious Cora believes they are "friends with benefits." Sometimes, as I'm reading a Puzzle Lady Mystery, I feel like strangling Cora Felton myself. She is extremely annoying, offensive and opinionated. One reason that I like the Puzzle Lady Mysteries is because Cora Felton reminds me of M. C. Beaton's Agatha Raisin. Both women, and their respective mystery series, are very zany and hilarious. Always obsessing over liquor and tobacco, Cora and Agatha have been married several times and live in small communities. Agatha, however, doesn't have a family of flesh-and-blood relatives. Cora does. She lives with her niece, Sherry Carter (she constructs the actual puzzles for which Cora is famous); her niece's husband, Aaron Grant, a reporter for the "Bakerhaven Gazette"; and their baby girl, Jennifer. Though Parnell Hall`s "Puzzled Indemnity" doesn't have the high body count that I always relish, it does have quite a few plot twists, jolting shocks, and hilarious hijinks. The core mystery is quite intriguing and I never guessed the killer's identity until nearly the very end. This is a cozy that Agatha Christie would have been proud to have written. I hope that future Puzzle Lady Mysteries are as highly entertaining as "Puzzled Indemnity."

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It's a Puzzle By Ted Feit The Puzzle Lady Series usually is based on a convoluted plot, and this latest novel seems to embody the wackiest of them all. This is the 15th book since the author conceived the prototype, and the twists and turns in it make an Alpine road look like a straight superhighway. Of course, it gives Cora Felton, The Puzzle Lady who can’t solve crossword puzzles, free rein to propound all kinds of theories and barbs and amusing comments before the mystery is solved. It all begins when a ditzy young woman retains Cora’s lawyer friend, Becky, because she fears her husband is having an affair and is planning to murder her. She says he took out a $1 million life insurance policy on her, with a double indemnity clause. Shades of the movie, Double Indemnity, which was serious. Not as amusing as “Puzzled Indemnity,” which is anything but. Cora is asked by Becky to investigate, and thus begins the strange journey.Despite the levity and craziness throughout the novel (much less the series), it encompasses a first rate mystery, worthy of Alfred Hitchcock. All the novels, naturally, encompass crossword puzzle and sudokus containing clues to move the story forward. They are edited by Will Shortz, who performs a similar task for The New York Times. If you haven’t read any of this novel’s predecessors, this book is a good one to start with. Then go back and read the others.Recommended.

Sword of the Mogul (Empire and Honor) (Volume 3), by Harold R. Thompson

About the Author

Harold Thompson was born at the end of the 1960s and grew up in the prog rock era, surrounded by the music of Genesis, Pink Floyd, and Yes. His favourite TV shows as a child were the original Star Trek, freshly syndicated Gilligan’s Island, and Space: 1999.

He studied neuroscience and cognitive psychology, running two independent labs for his honours degree program (a sort of mini-Masters). He had his eye on med school but at some point made a left turn and ended up in law school. That was a critical decision, because his dislike of law school caused him to quit to become a “serious” writer. Within five months, he had sold a short story and two non-fiction articles, and in October 1994, he wrote the first draft of Dudley’s Fusiliers, the first book in the best-selling Empire and Honor series.

Thompson’s love of history stems from his work with Parks Canada at the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site in his home town of Halifax, Nova Scotia. In his current position, he creates interpretive programming for visitors to the site.

He is also an avid amateur filmmaker and founded his own studio, Rec Room Movies, in 2007. Rec Room Movies has actually produced several real films, short pieces for Parks Canada, but is most proud of its no-budget feature A Tale of Bloody Creek.

Thompson continues to write short science fiction and historical fiction in his spare time. He lives with his family in Nova Scotia.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great third book which continues Dudley's adventure By Damon Barley Really loved Mr Thompson's previous books, never reading about the Crimean war, and thus gaining some insight into the conflict. After finishing this book after buying this a week ago, I absolutely did not realize time was passing when reading this. Good amount of drama mixed with the military action that Dudley is known for. A great work and a must read, you really won't regret it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Nice read, military practice a little short. By steven eldred This book is a good read. Thompson does a good job describing the people, location and cultures at work. He tells an entertaining story, and I will look forward to other works by this author. Militarily, he falls a little short. Two of his principal characters hold leadership positions (Colour Sgt and Ensign, or 2d lieutenant). In both cases the characters seem to be spectators to the battlefield action. Any soldier can tell you that the prime activity of leaders at that level are troop accountability (where are they, do they have their equipment, do they know what to do?) and situational awareness (where is my unit in relation to other units?). Thompson's characters are lacking in these critical elements, and it detracts from the story. It is not that the character is intended to be portrayed as weak, inexperienced or less than competent. It is apparent that the writer doesn't understand the duties of the character in that situation. From Caesar's Legions to modern drone-led infantry squads, some jobs haven't changed. This writer just doesn't know them.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. best yet... By jkiac I really liked this book. after reading the entire series (so far) i think this is the best yet. the main characters are better developed and honestly easier to root for. the later chapters started to drag a bit with the authors attempt to provide us with a too complete picture of all the military engagements. its always a difficult balance- historical accuracy versus "adventure" so i only subtracted a half star for that but the other half star came from the main character turning down the modern equivalent of billions of dollars. i don't want to divulge any details but simple state that it surpassed belief. completely out of character not only for this protagonist but pretty much any normal human being in any century.

These three find themselves fighting for survival at St. Michael the Archangel High School, a once-prestigious institution that has become a crumbling dumping ground for delinquents, misfits, and the unlucky. It's a place where bullying is sanctioned as "fun and games" hazing, where the unwritten rule is you can't hurt anyone who can hurt you back--and there's no one to turn to because the adults are part of the problem. The parish priest is embezzling from the church, the guidance counselor is coming unhinged with rage and regret, and the well-intentioned nun who runs St. Mike's mistakenly thinks compromise and cover-up can fix things. A coming-of-age tale, a dark comedy, and a tragedy rolled into one, Brutal Youth follows this band of students as they learn whether it's possible to protect yourself without losing who you are.

Brutal Youth: A Novel, by Anthony Breznican

From Booklist Peter Davidek agrees to visit the crumbling St. Michael’s High School to get out of a day of classes at his middle school. But when he comes to the aid of a student wounded in a vicious attack, he seals his fate. The father of the wounded student pressures Peter’s father into sending Peter to St. Michael’s, thus ensuring that he will be entirely miserable for the next year. Not only does the school promote bullying, but it also employs its fair share of loonies, including a disturbed guidance counselor and a devious priest with a gambling problem. Peter throws in with the enigmatic Noah Stein, who sports both a distinctive facial scar and an insouciant attitude. They both fall for the lovely but ostracized Lorelei Paskal, who is determined to belong to the popular crowd. In between the abuse heaped on them by seniors, the faculty, and their own clueless parents, the trio become friends. Eventually, a counterattack against the bullies is launched. In his first novel, Breznican, a staff writer for Entertainment Weekly, is clearly aiming for biting satire, but the off-the-rails plot and lunatic villains more often come off as cartoonish. —Joanne Wilkinson

Review

“It's crackling good entertainment: arresting from the first page to the last, full of plot twists, characters to root for (or against) and plenty of suspense about how the various story lines will resolve themselves.” ―USA Today

“This quick, unsettling coming-of-age novel blends sympathy and satire with surprising effectiveness.” ―Shelf Awareness

“Breznican captures a perfect balance of horror, heartbreak, and resilience and takes the high school novel into deeper places. Great for the beach but not just a summer read.” ―Library Journal, starred review

“A story that confidently rips through tangles of high school insanity. The author molds real characters out of high school stereotypes, most notably the misfits, all struggling for a humble slice of dignity within St. Michael's wretched, bleeding walls. The satiric narrative is as brilliantly hilarious as it is poignant and heartrending.” ―School Library Journal, starred review

“Readable and clever.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“While it certainly contains elements unique to parochial school, those who remember the passing of their high school years with relief rather than regret will feel the unease and quiet fear dripping off every page.” ―Book Reporter

“If you thought high school was hell, has Anthony Breznican got a story for you…Every bully who stalked you, every sadistic teacher who ever terrified you, every stupid prank, every hopeless crush and false friend: they're all here, along with a few kids who hang together and try to do the right thing in a brutal environment. By turns funny and terrifying, Brutal Youth is an unputdownable tour-de-force, a Rebel Without a Cause for the 21st century.” ―Stephen King

“With Brutal Youth, Anthony Breznican has captured high-school life in all its gruesome, wild, survival-of-the-fittest lunacy. His portrait of teenagers--and the theoretical grownups who tend to them--is, by turns, painfully funny and painfully painful, but always sharp as a well-carved stick.” ―Gillian Flynn, New York Times bestselling author of Gone Girl

“Anthony Breznican's debut screams with undeniable talent. Part The Outsiders. Part Stephen King's The Body. The aptly named Brutal Youth is a funny, tough, and heartbreaking book about the darker side of growing up.” ―Stephen Chbosky, New York Times bestselling author of The Perks of Being a Wallflower

“Brutal Youth by Anthony Breznican is one of the most thought-provoking, troubling, captivating stories I've read in a long time. My heart still hurts when I think of what those characters went through. Breznican does a fantastic job of creating people you fall in love with, making you experience their pain and cheer their triumphs as each page goes by. Their stories will haunt me for some time to come. The anti-bullying message is earned, heartily, instead of being thrust in your face. First and foremost the book is an intriguing, rich, perfectly paced, entertaining read. I also enjoyed the dark humor that offsets the harrowing tone at just the right spots. Highly recommended.” ―James Dashner, New York Times bestselling author of The Maze Runner

“As a child, few things are scarier than school. In Brutal Youth, you'll realize how right your younger self was. This one will haunt you.” ―Brad Meltzer, author of The Fifth Assassin and The Book of Lies

“Breznican has accomplished that rare feat of unflinchingly exposing the high school experience in all of its hilarity, vengeance, and terror. You'll think Roald Dahl just went for a swim in the world of John Hughes and came out wearing prison stripes. Life isn't fair... but high school is brutal.

This is the most richly detailed and nuanced academic microcosm since Dead Poets Society. You may have never been to St. Michael the Archangel High School, but you will fear it after reading this powerful and hilarious debut novel. Never has a story brought me back to the merciless teachers and ruthless bullies with such poetry and wit.” ―Jason Reitman, writer/director/producer of JUNO, THANK YOU FOR SMOKING, UP IN THE AIR and LABOR DAY

About the Author ANTHONY BREZNICAN was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh. He currently lives in Los Angeles and is a senior writer for Entertainment Weekly. Brutal Youth is his first novel.

If I had to go back to high school tomorrow, I'd run for the hills today By Nathan Webster First, if you're one of those people who are all like "high school was the best four years of my life, and it made me who I am today and blah blah blah," then you were part of the problem. Happily, I don't think this book is for that audience.Author Anthony Breznican's narrative is set in 1991, which avoids today's social media being part of the plotline, while accurately reflecting the last gasp of an era where high school kids really were an island unto themselves. As readers who grew up in that time know, there was often little oversight or knowledge of what you were up to - it's not like parents could check 'status updates,' etc. They had to pick up the phone and start calling, and the parents at the other end were equally unaware. The point being a lot of the behavior that would be hard to accept in 2014 is perfectly believable in a 1991 setting, and Breznican does a good job reflecting that.Fans of Pat Conroy's "Lords of Discipline" should find a lot to like in this book - those familiar with Conroy's tangled web of betrayed friendships, unrequited love, shocking revelations, etc., will appreciate this storyline (which is not saying that the events are similar to Conroy's). Just as Conroy took the reader to the brutality of a military academy, Breznican brings his readers to a failing Catholic school, and a variety of students and faculty both detestable and redeemed.Since I'm the first reviewer, I don't know what's a spoiler and what's not - so going into main plot points is a bad idea. The three main characters of the narrative are high school freshmen that weather the brutal storms of adolescent life, and you can expect St. Michael's school to be an unfair enviornment populated by those at the top of the food chain, and those below - they all choose their own methods of navigating this unfamiliar path, some better than others.None of the actions and events seem implausible - though of course they're exaggerated. This is described as a "dark comedy," but I'd say the scale balances more toward "dark." But it's plenty funny too. There is plenty of misdirection that successfully kept me guessing. There are a variety of plot twists, some I saw coming, some I didn't. The primary plot is not a set-up for some big shock ending that comes out of nowhere - it's much more subtle than that.Breznican does a great job of keeping the momentum going, and even at the big section breaks, I always wanted to keep reading. His background is in entertainment journalism, and the entire narrative has a cinematic feel to it - the story's constant forward motion would help make it a good movie, and I think it was written with that in mind.Like all school-related novels, the dialogue (while excellent) is a little too perfect for freshmen kids, and we were never quite the whipsmart children that novels would like us to believe. But, it serves the story, so that's the way it has to be. For the most part, it's in the ballpark of how they'd talk and act. Some of the students are more three-dimensional than others, but even the thinnest portrayals get a few sentences of backstory and explanation.Again, while some of the maniacal behavior of the students might not ring true in 2014, it IS accurate as far as the late '80s-'90s goes, before the days of instant lawsuits, and the internet broadcasting everybody's business. Secrets and information spread in a much more organic way, and if you kept your mouth shut, parents simply would never find things out. Some of the best portrayals are those of the bureaucrats and company (wo)men that make up the school's administration - in this '90s era, everybody went along to get along, and short of actually stabbing somebody in the hallway, most everything was excused with a "shake hands" and "try not to do it again," and maybe a meaningless in-school suspension for a few days. So these administrators realistically make excuses and cover their behinds. So if I'm avoiding talking about the plot, my focus is that this is a five-star quality, entertainingly written, twisting-and-turning, painfully-nostaligic reflection of those awful high school days. It is brutal, but in an early '90s way; by the end, the characters - mostly - get the fates that they deserve.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Oh, high school days! By D. Williams Do you remember cliques, outcasts, bullies, and hazing from high school? Then BRUTAL YOUTH will relive those days with you.St. Michael’s School in western Pennsylvania has a declining enrollment, reputation, and budget. Many of the students were expelled from other schools. Many of the teachers and administrators truly don’t need to be in their positions. The gym for required physical education really doesn’t exist because the chapel burned down years ago, and the gym has become a makeshift chapel. The building leaks with every rain, but there is no funding to repair it properly. This is only some of what rising freshmen Peter Davidek, Noah Stein, and Lorelei Pascal see when they visit St. Michael’s at the end of their eighth-grade year for open house/orientation. They even witness an incident in which an upperclassman loses control, injures himself, and damages the school. When Peter, Noah, and Lorelei begin their freshman year at St. Michael’s, they find out even more: the inmates (the upperclassmen) seem to be in charge of the asylum. Hazing doesn’t just go unpunished; it’s encouraged as a so-called means of team-building.So Peter, Noah, and Lorelei – outcasts even within their own class -- set out to do something about this situation. Do they succeed? What happens to the unprincipled people in this school? Read and find out.I read THE CHOCOLATE WARS for a class in library school, and I do see hints of CHOCOLATE WARS in BRUTAL YOUTH. There is some strong language (though nothing atypical for a high school setting), some hints of sexuality, and violence, so I recommend this for sophisticated older teens. Perhaps they will learn to be more compassionate toward outcasts and underclassmen, but .... we’ll see.Who am I: I am an instructor of English at a two-year college who also has an MS in library science.

Bristol When he attends a visiting day for prospective high school freshmen at St. Michael's, Peter Davidek doesn't expect to witness a student having a nervous breakdown on the roof or duck flying glass jars. Nor does he expect not to read something substantial about the occurrence in the papers, but there is almost no press. Instead a genial stranger shows up at his front door and manages to persuade his parents to send him to St. Mike's. When he gets there, he quickly realizes that hazing by the seniors is relentless, unavoidable and seemingly condoned by the administration, who either turns a blind eye or makes weak attempts to intervene. The following exchange between the adults responsible for these impressionable souls is typical."Do we have a fail-safe if an especially cruel senior chooses an especially weak freshman to be a personal punching bag?" Zimmer asked."Then we intercede," (the principal) said. "But in the meantime, at least he will have only one punching bag."Good to know, isn't it? Strangely, this isn't too reassuring to Peter, or his new friend Noah Stein, or the girl they both have a crush on, Lorelai, or their mutual friend, Green, the only African-American there. Or an unfortunate looking girl who is recruited by a priest to spy on her classmates and report back. You see, the school is in serious financial trouble, which results in Father Mercedes, the one at the top of the power pyramid, scapegoating the principal, Sister Maria, and so on, all the way down to the outcasts of the senior class, who manage nevertheless to get some of their own back. But it's one outcast in particular, a girl named Hannah, who is feared the most - as she allegedly has a notebook filled with dirty secrets, and it's also rumored that she intends to have her freshman read it out loud at the end of the school year picnic. Over the year, the freshmen will struggle to survive, but there will be no real happy endings - just knowledge bitterly gained and sober realizations that the system is bigger than any attempt they could make individually to fix it.Each character, even the evil Ms. Bromine, is given at least a little backstory, which even if it doesn't redeem them, helps to drive home the message that the line between victim and victimizer isn't always clear. The book will probably remind the reader of several books/movies on adolescent bullying, such as "The Chocolate War," "Lords of Discipline," "Mean Girls," and "Dazed and Confused," but the author avoids several potential clichéd paths (racism is surprisingly not a major part of the black student's hazing). Sadly, it does a pretty authentic job of showing what bullying was like in the pre-social network era, where teens didn't need the Internet to be vicious.

Well, it is not, but it actually has more sense than that. Companionship refers to plants, those types of plants which are in some ways beneficiary to one another. In other words, plants that you should group together in your garden. The author of this book explains it much better than I can. The book contains reasons why this method is good, what plants are good for each other and what exactly do they do for each other. It is fascinating to read how one plant battles the insects that harm another or how one provides necessary nutrients to another. Nature is truly fascinating. If you are into gardening and planting, you should definitely check this book out. Implement this methods and you should have much richer, more vibrant and healthier garden.

From the bestselling author of Bless Me, Ultima, the absorbing story of an adopted Mexican-American boxing champion’s quest for identity. Abrán González always knew he was different. Called a coyote because of his fair skin, the kid from Barelas found escape through boxing and became one of the youngest Golden Gloves champs.   But the arrival of a letter from a dying woman turns his entire life into a lie. The revelation that he was adopted makes him feel like an orphan and sends him on a quest to find his birth father.   With the help of his girlfriend, Lucinda, and Joe, a Vietnam veteran, Abrán begins a journey that hurls him from the barrio into a world of greed and political corruption spearheaded by Abrán’s manager, Frank Dominic, a con artist running for mayor with visions of building El Dorado on the Rio Grande.   Rich in spirituality, and taking its title from the original spelling of the city’s name, Alburquerque casts a light on the importance of ancestry while cutting across class and ethnic lines to tell a story of hope and displacement, love and regret, and the power of identity.

Alburquerque: A Novel, by Rudolfo Anaya

From Publishers Weekly Chicano novelist Anaya's explosive study of political patronage and the search for ethnic roots takes its title from a New Mexican legend. In 1880, an Anglo stationmaster reportedly took the first R out of Albuquerque's name, a move that symbolized the emasculation of the Mexican way of life. Set in the present, this absorbing novel focuses on a young boxer, fair-skinned Abran Gonzales, who is shattered by the revelation that his parents adopted him. He meets his real Anglo mother, dying of cancer, on her deathbed, then sets out on a quest for his Mexican father--who, the reader quickly learns, is Abran's acquaintance, the writer/professor Ben Chavez. Unscrupulous, rich lawyer Frank Dominic becomes Abran's manager, promising that he will hire a detective to locate Abran's father and reveal his identity to the slugger during the big comeback fight of his career. Dominic, a con artist who wants to turn Albuquerque into a Venice-like tourist trap, complete with casino-lined canals, is running for mayor against Marisa Martinez, an independent maverick. Dominic acquires nude photos of Martinez in compromising positions, which threatens to derail Abran's true romance and the city's future. Anaya ( Tortuga ) spins a touching love story woven into a tale of treachery, a microcosm of the social and economic dislocations squeezing the American Southwest. From Library Journal In his fifth novel, the best-selling author of Bless Me, Ultima ( LJ 2/1/73) sets an archetypal quest for the father in the city of "Alburquerque" (according to Anaya, the legendary spelling of the name), in which various characters vie for political power. Abran Gonzalez, a former Golden Gloves champion unaware that he was adopted, learns this secret from his biological mother on the night she dies. The revelation triggers a search for his father's identity that involves New Mexican politicos, a Rocky -like boxing match, and a man who believes his ancestors were bears. Other main characters also have murky ancestry; one Italian American even tries to prove that he was descended from the Duke of Albu(r)querque. At times melodramatic, the work has an intense spirituality that ultimately makes it mesmerizing. Highly recommended.- Harold Augenbraum, Mer cantile Lib., New YorkCopyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review Anaya's prowess shows through on every page. . . . Thumbs up. --ABQarts

Boxing versus Maturation By Neil Scott Mcnutt This book, copyrighted in 1992,precedes the trilogy about detective Sonny Baca beginning with Zia Summer (1995), and then Rio Grande Fall (1996), and the latest Shaman Winter (1999). I read Alburquerque after these three novels and enjoyed them all very much, but I feel that it would have been better to read Alburquerque first before the Sonny Baca novels. This is because some of the characters are presented in full detail in Alburquerque and play a major part in the later novels. It did feel strange to read Alburquerque in which Sonny Baca plays a very minor role. Here the center of attention is Abrán González who undergoes rapid growth of character in relationship to his search for his biological mother and biological father, his relationship to his adoptive parents, and his discovery of his true love Lucinda. Those who find boxing disgusting should still read this, in which the boxing is handled with grace and drama. The story is written in a direct style with great warmth. You find yourself really caring about the characters. The 293 pages fly by as the book plunges into its whirlwind ending.

I enjoyed both books very much. The dreams and healing magic tied into the Catholic religion was very interesting. The characters were unforgetable and the settings in the books I could see in my mind. I could not put it down and I read both in one day.

'r' is for 'real' By Melissa Hardie According to Rudolph Anaya, Albuquerque lost its first `r' back in 1880, when the railroad reached Alburquerque and a stationmaster, unable to pronounce the Spanish word, dropped the letter. The title of this novel restores the `r' and by implication the "real" Albuquerque, seen through the eyes of the main character, Abran Gonzalez. The novel's plot is convoluted, involving an Oliver Twist-like tale of familial loss and restoration, a web of intrigue that stretches from City Hall to the barrio, and scenic tours of the city. It's highly sentimental, and at times rather overwhelmingly "poetic." I did find it very readable, though, and an interesting if overwrought introduction to the city. Anaya's eye on the city is, it seems to me, at least partly guided by the desire to "advertize" New Mexico, particularly in his evocation of its artist colonies, its wide open landscapes, and its self-conscious blend of mythologies and cultural identities. It's an interesting mix.

He's included all the things we loved about the first, and then he ups the stakes with more conflict, more danger, and more excitement, as the erstwhile Tucker gets pulled into dark family matters that have been secret for years. When Tucker gets ripped from a nice time on a lovely date to look at a dead body on his doorstep, it's just the beginning of a long, dark ride into hell. Poor Tucker must deal with a bunch of people who he thought he knew- but he discovers how little he understood those he was related to. Of course he gets assaulted, and there are more killings as he desperately tries to make sense of a rewritten past. The rest of the Ray Daniel trademarks are there as well, including the just-right technical explanations, and the travelogue of beloved Boston landmarks, watering holes, and eateries. If you liked the first, you'll enjoy this one as much or more. If you haven't read the first, you'll want to go back and read that one too.

In my present life I hardly ever have the time/focus to sit down and read a book. Well I finished it yesterday on my bench outside when I was just going to read a couple of chapters before I gardened. The result was 1) I am sunburned (since I was going to put the sunblock on in order to garden) 2) I did NOT garden and 3) I have a smile on my face today remembering the clever suspenseful ride it took me on. EXCELLENT READ!!! Suspenseful & so so clever. I really enjoyed Ray Daniel's 1st book, TERMINATED, but this one was really a grand slam. Highly Recommend!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Tucker Novel: No Cheap Boston Accents Here By Grant Sandy This was a really good follow-on to Mr. Daniel's first Tucker novel, Terminated. Tucker is a personable and wonderfully complex character and he has reason to be so. The other characters are less complex except for one other character who is particularly mysterious and fascinating. The writing here is compact and precise. There is a strong sense of place. The result is a book that is hard to put down.

Coloring Book For Traditional Japanese Art By Amazon Customer I was given a free copy of this Kindle ebook in return for an honest review.I thought it would be more fairy tale creatures, like dragons, but it is very traditional Japanese drawings of people.A few images are a little grey and those images are not very clear, but most are OK.I didn't find any images I personally was interested in coloring, but I could see someone interested in this topic loving this coloring book.Just personally not for me.
