What You Need is a collection of three tales of service and love, in varied forms. "Haunted Heart": Although Edward Heatherton, an Oxford graduate from southwestern England, has grown up enjoying every possible privilege, he lacks the love he desires. After he volunteers to fly with the Royal Air Force in World War II, he realizes that he may be incapable of such intimacy. "Stairways": Fergus McNamara came from Ireland to Hollywood, to pursue a career in acting. Four years later, he lives in Queens, New York with his wife and two children, and works as a house manager for multi-millionaire investor Abe Goldman, whose Manhattan residence spans a city block. Goldman employs a staff the size of a small army, which takes care of the minutiae of his business and his daily life—from tracking the values of his stocks to purchasing his toothpaste. His wife Julia, a former actress-turned dilettante, also keeps the help busy with her many needs and desires—and her changeable moods. Life is quite stressful for Fergus and his coworkers in this contemporary "Upstairs Downstairs," until the despotic Mr. Goldman suffers an accident and is no longer in complete control of anything. "What You Need (Ce dont vous avez besoin)": Mary is a thirty-two year old who cannot seem to “get it together.” Her life is a bundle of contradictions: she lives alone in a tiny apartment in an idyllic setting—overlooking a harbor on the North Shore of Long Island—but she’s surrounded by disruptive and frustrating neighbors. She holds multiple graduate degrees, but makes ends meet, barely, waitressing alongside a cast of colorful characters at a local bistro and tutoring the children of wealthy families on the side. She dates eligible men (and sometimes not-so-eligible men), but can never seem to find one who "sticks." When her confrontational neighbor Mark—an artist with a life even more complicated than hers—is mysteriously murdered one night, Mary assumes it is his past coming to haunt him. However, she soon finds that Mark’s demise has more to do with her life than she could guess.

Straight-forward Prose and Characters Who Linger By CeeCeeSings A trilogy of stories with vastly different settings (and, in the first instance, time periods) but ones that leave the reader with a sense of a journey well-traveled - and satisfyingly ended. The author creates a sense of movement, of searching, and her protagonists often are just missing "what they need". By the time I arrived at the third installment, I was carrying a few "ghosts" with me, but along with Mary, the final tale's heroine, I was able to live happily with them, even thought they themselves may not have rested as easily. Grab this for a smart summer read.

Rachel Wifall looks at this search through three very different people, times, and places in her first novel What You Need. This novel is divided into three separate stories. "Haunted Heart," set in England 1949, revolves around former pilot Edward, his unspoken love for his friend Claire, and her wedding to his best friend Archie. "Stairways" is set in NYC in 2013, where Fergus McNamara balances family, gambling, and working as household manager for the rich, impatient, and obnoxious Abe Goldman, his spoiled wife Julia, and their servants and high-society friends. Finally, "What You Need (Ce dont vous avezbesion)" brings us to Long Island in 2010 and Mary, whose balance of waitressing, education, dating, and friends is upset by the murder of her neighbor Mark. What You Need is a satisfying, pleasant novel. Rachel creates very distinct protagonists for each segment of the book, whether it's the almost antiquated feel of the post-war love triangle, the hectic life of a big job in Manhattan, or the uncertain stumbling to figure out what one wants and needs in their thirties. The dialogue is nice, whether it's philosophical musings ("Time may not be an issue for those already departed, but life could seem so long to the living.") The overall pace of What You Need is sometimes slow, but it's also an enjoyable slice of life from three distinct lives.

"Haunted Heart" is a period piece which takes place in and around the English countryside during the time and aftermath of the two World Wars, "Stairways" and "What You Need" are set in Manhattan and Long Island's Gold Coast at the dawn of the new millennium. The stories, while complex and independently different, share themes of society and class struggles, isolation, time, warfare and conflict, suffering, repression, memory, the past and most importantly freedom.Rachel Wifall creates multifaceted characters who all are seemingly on an odyssey of self worth; what do they (and we the readers) need to feel whole and fulfilled in life? Wifall skillfully delves into different social scenes, histories and relationships to examine the inner workings and mechanisms that make people tick. Some people may see parallels between Wifall's work, and that of Katherine Mansfield and Virginia Woolf. I only wish these stories would have gone on longer. I highly recommend this great work of modern fiction.
