The Mason Theater is elegant, the subject of many longings, dreams, and aspirations. Having those are six people, united by the fact that they all come to see a performance at this theater. Al is a janitor with a connection to the portrait of Samuel Mason, the original owner of the theater, and a sickly mother who he has to take care of. Although he stays in the shadows, he has an incredible eye for directing. Marjorie is the understudy who is plain, to say the least. She can act well, but spends her career in the shadow of Brooke's, and just wants to make herself seem beautiful. When people see Brooke, they have a new standard of beauty. She can't help that she's given things, like this role. No one can dance better than she can, but her acting and singing are something to wince at, causing her to feel insecure at times.... Charlie and Grace live underneath a porch. Charlie loves Grace more than life, and, envisioning a better future for them, had been roped into a poker game in which he gambled everything they had. He keeps trying to make it up to Grace... Grace has tried to forgive Charlie as much as she could, and be the strong one, but she can't help longing for something better, and to be able to express herself Richford is the owner of the theater, a heavyset, wealthy man. He cares about nothing more than the profits involved. Their stories progress, over one day at the Mason Theater.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. great! By James S. Anderson This is a terrific first novella. This young author writes with maturity and wisdom far beyond her years. Early on, Sawoski paints a detailed portrait of The Mason Theater itself, before she introduces us to a cast of characters whose varied lives draw us in and make us eager to learn more about them. Not only does the reader care about these individuals, but the ways in which their lives intersect and intertwine are engaging and totally believable.I am genuinely looking forward to watching Sawoski's evolution as she hones her talents and shares more poignant stories with us.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Debut Novel By mara koppel That the author dedicates her first novel to John Steinbeck and F. Scott Fitzgerald speaks volumes. Her debut work is a welcome change from thefantasy so dear to many of her years. This confident writer sets her story in a theatre, using the drama behind the scenes and on the stage tofull effect. The reader is drawn into a setting beloved since Shakespeare and the American musical theatre tradition…the highs and lows of putting on a show. In this story, the show does go on with grace(actually two, as there is a character named Grace), redemption, human connection. She has taken on the transformative capacity of a creative community. Miss Sawoski has set out on the writers' road early. I hope she stays on it.
