13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. five the hard way By Daniel S. Palter Grading this one is hard. Per se I am suspect on anthologies. Quality tends to be uneven. The nominal thyme or unifying principle tends to be honored in the breach. So I start at 4 stars instead of 5. I would normally drop this by 2 stars for cheating and putting in a super heroes story. I’ll only drop it 1 as once I got past being cheated by a genre I prefer not to buy it wasn’t bad. So we would be at 3 except two stories [TEN RULES FOR BEING AN INTERGALACTIC SMUGGLER and War Dog] are excellent. One, MORRIGAN IN THE SUNGLARE, is off the charts good. So good I regard the book as underpriced just for the joy of having had the chance to read this. So I get to 5 but I am mostly complaining about a story that may not offend you [supers are quite popular these days but not my bag] and mostly raving about three stories [many people grade anthologies by worst or averages and there are a bunch of 3’sand 4’s as well as the three star turns]. So YMMV.

A collection of the so-called "best" is always tricky, because tastes vary from person to person and the stories are both SF military or space opera. I enjoyed the book, some stories more than others. The one I voted for (on the Baen's website) was "Ten Rules for Being an Intergalactic Smuggler" by Holly Black. I liked most of the other tales, but that was the one I enjoyed most. Read for yourself and vote!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The Best Anthology I've Ever Read!!! By Dayton Lavon Kitchens I love anthologies and the opportunity to find diamonds in the rough. Unfortunately with most anthologies for every dozen stories you will at most find one or two that justify the volume. But this one is different. To me not a single weak story in the bunch. As a group they tend to be rather low hard tech for science fiction with a heavy emphasis on genetic engineering and biological weapons but it still features straight up traditional space opera like Brad Torgersen's "Picket Ship" and William Ledbetter's "Stealing Arturo"."Codename: Delphi" by Linda Nagata is probably the one closest to us today in terms of technology and how its used."Soft Casualty" by Michael Williamson is a truly gut wrenching (literally!) horror story. And "Brood" by Stephen Gaskell takes us underneath the surface of Vesta for an up close look at war involving artificially created insects. Likewise "War Dog" by Michael Berretta keeps the horror going in a nightmarish future confederacy in the American south riven by biological warfare. But the best for me was "Persephone Descending" by Derek Kunsken where an engineer flees deep into the atmosphere of Venus during an assassination attempt. The descriptions of life forms and conditions in the thick, unforgiving clouds of Venus are worth reading all by themselves.Definitely buy this book. Buy two if you can. One to keep safe. One to read again and again because you will definitely be doing so.
