By Chanticleer Book Reviews Judith Kirscht has penned a poignant story of two good people who struggle to escape their past and carve out a fulfilling life together. At its very core, this novel asks the compelling question of whether you can overcome the influences of family, and also, whether you can survive the consequences of your own actions. As far as the people of the small town of McKenzie Crossing are concerned, Ned Hawkins is from the wrong side of the tracks. And that’s putting it mildly—his father is a convicted murderer, his brother an alcoholic with a violent streak. Ned has spent his entire life feeling trapped and attempting to outrun his family’s legacy. As "Hawkins Lane" opens, Ned has escaped on his daily trek into his beloved Cascade Mountains to find peace and solace.  By chance, he comes upon a young woman, Erica Romano, fishing in a creek far from town. Erica is also escaping from the demands of her family, though their circumstances are very different: Erica is the daughter of the town’s new physician and related to the rich and powerful McDonald family, owners of the local mill. For both, it is love at first sight. Ned has grave reservations about exposing Erica to his family and wants to protect her by keeping his distance. Erica persists, convincing him that she needs him as much as he needs her.Unfortunately, family almost always finds a way to impact one’s life, and depending on the family, that impact can lead to tragedy. Ned’s brother, who has been spiraling out of control ever since their father was sent to prison, ends up in trouble with the law. Erica, who is by nature a risk-taker, places herself in danger far too often, and the mountains are not always a forgiving place. However, when Ned’s father is released from jail he spreads his own brand of poison, driving deep wedges and creating divided loyalties. Erica and Ned are challenged in ways that even they could not predict nor expect."Hawkins Lane" is an excellent and ultimately redemptive story about the heart-wrenching tragedies a family can survive, and about the healing powers of nature and friendship. The characters and the story will linger long after the last page is read and you will be captivated from the first page.

Trimble When Ned Hawkins meets Erica Romano, they’re in the heavily forested North Cascade mountains. Ned spends a lot of his time in the woods, alone, as far away as he can get from the town of McKenzie Crossing. The townspeople make him feel trapped, unwanted, lumping him with his rough, hard-drinking relatives and his father, in prison serving a sentence for murder. Ned won’t have anything to do with his father, uncles, not even his brother, but nevertheless he’s still associated with the Hawkins clan.Ned finds Erica Romano fly fishing with the expertise of someone who is used to handling herself in the woods. She’s happiest on horseback, fishing, or hiking in the great outdoors. As Hawkins Lane by Judith Kirscht surges forward in time, Ned, Erica and their daughter Bonnie are a family happily living the lives of forest rangers. Their world crashes when Ned’s father is released from prison. It goes into further decline when a tragic accident affects all their lives. The family learns the truth about themselves as the result of these incidences and struggles for the strength to cope.Hawkins Lane is a sweeping novel delving into the Hawkins’ lives, not only of Ned and Erica, but of their extended families as well. Kirscht weaves a story teemed with suspense and laced with emotions borne of shame, fear and secrets kept too long.A fine contemporary novel and a worthy family saga, the author shows a keen sense of story. Her characterization skills are extraordinary as she captures the lives of not only Ned, Erica and Bonnie, but also of Ned and Erica’s mothers and other family members. Kirscht’s in-depth descriptions of pristine mountain wilderness are exquisite.Hawkins Lane is available in e-format, but will soon be published in trade paperback. Whatever your preferred format, don’t miss this splendid novel. For more information about Judith Kirscht, visit www.judithkirscht.com

By Broadway Turk Superstar Hawkins Lane by Judith Kirscht is a psychological thriller that evokes memories of some of the great classic mountainside suspense tales, from Deliverance to Legends of the Fall. It is a family saga centered around the Hawkins clan, whose patriarch is a convicted murderer. His sons Ned and Billy are born under a bad sign, misfits who find themselves unable to escape their father’s shadow. Only they both find romance with two desirable women, Erica and Tess. Ned and Erica raise a family but find their dreams crestfallen by an injury she suffers during her stint as a forest ranger. Wifebeater Billy seems to turn over a new leaf, but Tess finds it hard to forgive and forget. These are simmering relationships that the author masterfully brings to a boiling point in this well-crafted drama. The theme of family resonates throughout the novel as Amos Hawkins resurfaces, though remaining as a phantasmal Heart of Darkness Kurtz-like entity who draws the two couple’s children like moths to a flame. Erica becomes crippled both physically and emotionally, watching Tess’ life unravel alongside her own. Only Ned steps up and becomes her anchor, while his brother fails miserably at Tess’ side. The loyalty of their dogs and horses prove ironic as they prove far more trustworthy than the children of the relationships. It seems as if the inevitable meeting between Erica and Amos will prove cataclysmic---will anyone remain at her side to help her stand the test?Pick up a copy of Kirscht’s Hawkins Lane. The answer will have you reading it over again with a new set of questions and answers…and questions and answers.
