Ever since Mittie Humphreys agreed to join dashing barnstorming pilot Ames for a joyride in his airplane, her lifelong love of horses has been surpassed by one thing--a longing for the skies. It seems she's not the only one--with Charles Lindbergh making his victory tour in the Spirit of St. Louis, aviation fever is spreading across the country. Mittie knows flying is the perfect focus for the soaring ambition and taste for adventure within her, and whenever she can slip away from her duties on her family's prosperous Kentucky horse farm, she heads to the airfield. Considering their shared passion, it's no surprise that Ames begins to vie for Mittie's time. But when handsome British aviator Bobby York offers her flying lessons, he is equally surprised-and beguiled-by Mittie's grit and talent. Driven to succeed, Mittie will do whatever it takes to compete in the Women's National Air Derby alongside Amelia Earhart. But when Calista "Peach" Gilson, a charming Southern belle, becomes her rival both professionally and in love, Mittie must learn how to navigate her heart's romantic longings as well as the skies.

By lighthouse88 What drew my attention to the novel was not only the possibility of a good tale, but the front cover showing a young woman with a vintage plane. As I started reading, I kept wondering if I had the right idea of the story after all. The author sets the stage carefully and slowly draws the reader into the scenes along with the characters, which together bring a wonderful tale of a young woman breaking out of expectations from family and society in an era where it was difficult for women to reach their dreams or see their aspirations become reality. For Mattie two vastly different realms tugged at her heart, horses and airplanes. While her twin sister meets the expectations of society, Mattie rebels against anything that attempts to restrain her from reaching the sky! Mattie always believed she was homely looking and would never find true love or ever be successful in any endeavor. Mattie has fallen in love with a young man named Ames, but something keeps niggling at the back of her mind regarding Ames. Will Mattie be able to put her doubts to rest and have a future with young Ames or must she choose between breeding special horses versus flying!Carla Stewart gives us a glimpse of women in history with some names readers will be able to quickly remember. I loved how Mattie’s family didn’t live a perfect or trouble free existence whether it was regarding family, horses or characters’ internal and external struggles. Audiences will love how a character who at first seems to be a supportive cast member is really an example of waiting for the one they love.Sitting down to A Flying Affair was pure delight from start to finish. The trip to the past along with a glimpse into life for women in that era as we as the beginning of women in aviation was like icing on the cake, pure sweetness! Please join the fun in reading the adventure as written by Cara Stewart in A Flying Affair.

"A Flying Affair" by Carla Stewart is a work of historical fiction with a bit of romance and mystery thrown in. It takes place in the 1920's, mostly in Kentucky on the horse farm owned by Mittie's father. Along with the flying, and the horses, we get vivid descriptions of the beautiful land! Mittie, a very spunky young lady, has torn loyalties as she loves the horse ranch and everything to do with it. Due to her father being injured, she has taken over running the ranch. But, her real love is flying! Mittie is excited to take lessons and get a plane of her own. She feels torn between her responsibilities at home and her desire to be in the air. The handsome young man giving her lessons wants more of a relationship with her, but all she can think about are her aviation goals. There is another man vying for her attention too. Which one should she choose? Does she need to choose one? Can't a young woman just do what she loves and not have to marry? These questions, and more come up throughout the story. Carla Stewart has done a great job adding details about women getting into flying and some of the chauvinism they faced. She also added in facts about Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, and a few other names I didn't know. Also included are some factual details from the first Women's National Air Derby. While these things were interesting, I did feel like the story left some unanswered questions and that is why I gave A Flying Affair three stars instead of four. I didn't feel like all the issues were resolved and that perhaps a few of the characters could have been more developed. (for example, Iris just sort of disappears, perhaps this was done intentionally in order to make her the main character of Stewart's next book?) If you like historical fiction that contains some real facts, you will enjoy this book. It is a clean story, with just a few kisses in it. I received this book from The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.

Set against the backdrop of the Roaring Twenties, this fascinating novel centers around Mittie Humphreys, a young woman whose love of horses is soon eclipsed by her passion for aviation.Mittie is also captivated by fellow aviator Ames Dewberry, a daredevil who appeals to her adventurous side. With Ames constantly flying in and out of her life, Mittie begins flying lessons with newcomer Bobby York, but she is also intrigued by wing-walking as well. As competitions for women aviators begin springing up across the country, Mittie turns her attention to honing her skills as a pilot. Her introduction to Calista Gilson piques her jealousy as Calista forms friendships with both Bobby and Ames but surprisingly, their professional rivalry quickly turns to friendship.Mittie is torn between helping her parents on the family’s horse farm and her interest in aviation. With her father still recovering from a riding accident, she puts her dream of learning to fly on hold until he is well enough to resume his duties. She is headstrong and stubborn and while she respects her mother’s fears for her safety, Mittie still begins flying lessons with family friend Bobby while Ames teaches her how to wing-walk. Ames is more flamboyant of the two men and he talks Mittie into joining his barnstorming act as a wing-walker.Ames is also the man who makes Mitte’s heart beat faster, but their romance simmers on the back-burner due to Ames’ long absences and sporadic communication. While Ames comes and goes, Bobby is always around and he is instrumental in helping Mittie achieve her goal of becoming a pilot. He is a quiet, unassuming presence in her life and although she is occasionally drawn to him, their relationship never really develops beyond friendship because of her infatuation with Ames.Meticulous research, daring exploits and exciting adventures bring A Flying Affair vibrantly to life. The novel is well-written with unique and interesting characters. The historical aspect of the plot is richly detailed and Carla Stewart beautifully incorporates fact with fiction. A fast-paced and riveting read that is sure to be a hit with anyone who enjoys a sweet, clean romance with a very light undercurrent of faith.I received a complimentary copy for review.
