"It takes my keen eye no time at all to discern that Clifford is prettier than Claudia."Clifford and Claudia is powered by two remarkable characters: a twenty year old, Charles, who arrives at the door of the cozy pizza shop owned by Clifford and Claudia on a snowy Thursday night, fully unprepared for what is beyond the threshold; and Clara, a cranky old woman who is out to save mankind with a pack of Camels, a glass of scotch, and a mouth that could take the paint off a passing automobile. As their paths converge, and reality becomes a slippery demon, James Halat enfolds the reader in a world of improbable snowfalls, extraordinary childhoods, an incredibly shrinking adversary, and one unforgettable trip on the uptown local.  A story of elusive dreams, unexpected love, and unwavering persistence, Clifford and Claudia rips away the veneer of social niceties to expose the vulnerabilities that fuel the over-the-top characters in this remarkable story of one young man's savagely funny and sometimes cruel coming of age during his desperate days of life with Clifford and Claudia.

Review "James Halat, in the two books he has released, makes a very impressive center stage stance. His ability to create stories that are refreshingly unexpected places him in line with some of most established authors. Highly Recommended." - Amazon Hall of Fame Top 100 Reviewer Grady Harp   "...a page turner!... James Halat delivers exceptional characters, clever and different views of the story world as well as a rich interplay on the physical and emotional journey of Charles." - Amazon Reviewer "...constantly moving, unrelentingly challenging, bemusing, amusing, hurtful, charming..." - Goodreads Reviewer "Do you know what I love about this book? Its immediacy. The insistence of the language, the flurry of the flour and bubbling of the cheese and herbs in the kitchen, the miasma of Manhattan, the absolute eventual reality of Paterson NJ, the trueness of the characters to themselves, all the questions in my mind, things to feed my interior life, the possibility of this, the maybe of that. And that Charles is so utterly convincing, so open, so loving, so giving. This is a book you can float in with your eyes closed, long after you've finished it, safe, and sense that kind beings you can't begin to imagine are swimming and living their lives all around you, living their lives in the same water that's licking at your skin, and you're just content to know they're there. And they feel the same." - Goodreads Reviewer

By Grady Harp Author James Halat has experience from several locations of living. He was born in New Jersey, lived in New York City, and now lives in Tokyo Japan. To date he has published two books - SYNCOPATED RHYTHM and CLIFFORD AND CLAUDIA.Few authors can handle same sex stories as well as James as those who have had the pleasure of reading SYNCOPATED RHYTHM will witness. But fine as that story is, it s a novella. Now in a full-length novel he proves that he can interplay gay characters with aplomb and make his story so universally relevant that the reader can simply sit back and enjoy the entertainment. And in his novel there is entertainment aplenty! An example of his technique of placing italicized asides - a method of reflection that accentuates the flow of the story without disrupting it - James writes (for instance): `People stay in to keep warm. And dry. Feet up in front of the fireplace, hold a cocktail, a Rob Roy or a Vodka Martini, read a book or magazine, or a newspaper. Workaholics attach to their phones, pace back and forth, as small children vye for attention. The neighborhood busybody places a chair by the window and pulls back the curtain just enough... The delivery boy arrives. Newspapers fold up. Handsets return to their cradles. A curtain snaps back into position. Pizza boxes open up, release the sweet aromas of Clifford's most delectable of pizza pies. The golden crusts, the tangy tomatoes, the bubbling cheeses, the simmering of garlics and oreganos. A big tip for the delivery boy. And off into the night he goes.' Captured `ordinary' moments like these are like taking a sip of tea as the reading progresses.James offers a fine summary of this fascinating story: `Clifford and Claudia is powered by two remarkable characters: a young dreamer and oddball traveler, Charles, whose embarks on a journey that brings him to a cozy pizza shop owned by Clifford and Claudia; and a talkative, cranky old woman called Clara-Belle, who is out to save mankind equipped with a pack of Camels, a glass of scotch, and a mouth that could take the paint off a passing automobile. As their paths become irrevocably entangled, Charles finds himself falling in love with the delightful Mr. Chips, only to have that love brutally ripped from him in the brief moments of a senseless act. He enters a world where dreams are denied, happiness is destroyed, and the only way to escape from this nightmare is to untangle himself from what cannot be untangled. We follow Charles in his heroic and at times bizarre attempts to weather, among other things, a fabricated childhood, improbable snowfalls, a shrinking adversary, and a train ride to end all train rides in his remarkable struggle to reclaim what is rightfully his. And through it all, not once does Charles take his eye off the prize in this savagely funny portrait of a young man's coming of age during his desperate days of life with Clifford and Claudia.' And to add more would be a spoiler.James Halat, in the two books he has released, make s very impressive center stage stance. His ability to create stories that are refreshingly unexpected places him in line with some of most established authors. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, September 15

Warm,Wonderful, and Quirky By Ellen Fitzpatrick I dearly love to be knocked out of my expectations!I was fortunate enough to get a copy of this constantly moving, unrelentingly challenging, bemusing, amusing, hurtful, charming novel as a special offer for my Kindle, just when I needed a break. And what an enjoyable book it is. It deserves your full attention, it demands your full attention. It's not a lightweight bit of fluff, it's too human (?) to be that.Did Charles come from where he said he did? I don't know. Was the family he ended up with who they seemed to be? I don't know. But Charles is as convincing a character as I've met in a long time, there's never a moment when he's weakly portrayed, when the author wasn't living in his skin so that we could care about Charles, love with him, laugh with him, be in pain with him. When somebody else has read it, I'd love to talk about whether an alien needs to be an alien, or everybody we meet is an alien if we're going to be honest about it. The face we wake up with and look at in the bathroom mirror every morning is an alien, for that matter. And we can talk about whether he was off-planet or from a wrinkle in time. There's enough to tantalize, but not enough to answer. There are some wonderful, almost throw away, bits of "otherness," like a hot dog vendor, like a bottle floating in the Hudson, a bottle of ... nope, spoiler. The same is true of the other characters, Claudia, Clifford, Cliffie, and, oh, Clara! I love Clara. I wish I had Clara in my life. I miss her. Strong, believable, multifaceted, all of them. Those of you who read my reviews know that I don't do spoilers. All I can tell you is that this was one wonderful ride of the imagination and the heart. It took me a while to let go of reality, but what is reality, truthfully, but what we expect? What is reality but more of the same? All right, one spoiler. Know a great pizza shop? Not good, great. Put their number on speed dial. You're going to need it once or twice...EDIT: I always edit. Do you know what I love about this book? And they feel the same.

By CarolineS Clifford and Claudia: A Novel by James Halat is James Halat’s second novel and it is a page turner! From the first chapter, you will be hooked by Charles’s entrance (and I won’t add in more here as you need to read it) and his introduction to Clifford and Claudia.James Halat delivers exceptional characters, clever and different views of the story world as well as a rich interplay on the physical and emotional journey of Charles. The sections of italics add a deeper view of the scene and add a richness to the storyline. Those who have reviewed this book before give a detailed summary of the plot. What I can say, without doubt, is this book will hook you in to the last page.I am so pleased I found Clifford and Claudia and look forward to reading more from James Halat.
