Review CRITICAL ACCLAIM FOR THE JOHN PICKETT MYSTERIES "It's a pleasure to spend some time again with John Pickett and his ladylove in their latest adventure, and to watch as they solve another baffling case. England's Regency period comes to life in this enjoyable series." --Carola Dunn, author of the Daisy Dalrymple mysteries "A true treat for historical mystery fans! A vivid taste of Regency England, with a charming sense of history wrapped up in sparkling dialogue and an intriguing puzzle. I can't wait to see what happens in the next John Pickett mystery " --Amanda Carmack, author of Murder at Hatfield House "

From the Inside Flap In disgrace with her aristocratic in-laws, recently widowed Lady Fieldhurst is exiled to Scotland with her three young nephews in tow. On impulse, she and the boys decide to stay at an isolated seaside inn under an assumed name, where they can enjoy a holiday far away from the scandal that still plagues the family. But trouble soon finds them when the boys discover an unconscious woman on the beach--a woman who bears a startling resemblance to the local laird's daughter, missing and presumed dead for the last fifteen years. Uncertain whether to welcome her as a returning prodigal or denounce her as a fraud, Angus Kirkbride sends to London for a Bow Street runner--which presents a dilemma for Lady Fieldhurst, since she has chosen to call herself Mrs. Pickett after the handsome young man who saved her from hanging for the murder of her husband.Meanwhile John Pickett, hopelessly pining for Lady Fieldhurst, resolves to forget her by marrying another. When magistrate Patrick Colquhoun receives Kirkbride's summons, he packs Pickett off to Scotland before his most junior runner can do anything rash.Upon his arrival, Pickett is surprised (though not at all displeased) to discover that he has acquired a "wife" in the person of Lady Fieldhurst. But when Angus Kirkbride dies only hours after announcing his intention of changing his will in his daughter's favor, "Mr. and Mrs. Pickett" must join forces to discover the truth about a family reunion suddenly turned deadly.

By Linda Banche John Pickett is back!If you’re like me, you’ve been waiting for Sheri Cobb South's Regency mystery FAMILY PLOT, the continuing story of the mutual attraction between Bow Street Runner John Pickett and the widowed Julia, Lady Fieldhurst. The Fieldhursts have banished Julia to Scotland because of the unwanted attention her husband’s murder has attracted, and also because she pays too much attention to a certain Bow Street Runner. As long as they’re banishing her, they use her as an escort and babysitter for the current Lord Fieldhurst’s sons. En route to the nobleman’s estate, they take a detour to the coast, and to prevent anyone from tracing them, Julia assumes the name Mrs. Pickett.Things heat up when a woman washes ashore, one who professes she’s the long-lost daughter of a prominent local family. Things heat up more when the family hires John Pickett to investigate the woman’s story. Not only does he find secrets, but also a “wife” he didn’t know he had, and one he desperately wants to claim.Ms. South has crafted a fine Regency, full of the language and social customs of the time, the continuing love interest of John and Julia, and a mystery convoluted enough to satisfy die-hard fans of the genre. But the best part of the novel is the dance between John and Julia as they try to deny their increasing feelings for each other. Who says you need sex in a story? I much prefer the slow burn between John and Julia.I love John Pickett. He’s the best type of hero: honorable, competent, intelligent, kind, self-made. And he’s young and gorgeous, too, which certainly doesn’t hurt. :) He’s also madly in love with Julia, and she with him, but the social gulf which separates a Bow Street Runner, son of a pickpocket, from a well-born widow of a baron, is too vast for them to bridge. Or is it? Will true love triumph?Julia shows herself to be more than just a pretty face. Bullied by her husband’s family and the customs of the time, she questions why she lets this happen. Her transformation is at hand, and by the finale she proves herself a woman to be reckoned with. My kind of heroine. If you’re rooting for John and Julia, you’ll adore the end! But don’t peek. Save the surprise for the last. You’ll be glad you did.ARC provided by the author

By OLT This review is really for not only this book but also the first two in the series, starting with In Milady's Chamber and followed by A Dead Bore. I'd suggest reading them in order because, although the mysteries in each are stand-alones, the relationship between the two main characters, low-born 24-year-old Bow Street runner John Pickett and 26-year-old Julia, Lady Fieldhurst, widow in the peerage, is continually evolving and it's best to start at the beginning, when they first meet as Pickett investigates the murder of Lady Fieldhurst's husband and Julia is one of the main suspects. This third entry has Julia off to Scotland with her three nephews, in the hopes of tamping down all the scandal around the Fieldhursts. (There's murder, bigamy and illegitimacy to gossip about, as you'll learn from the first two books.) "Out of sight/out of mind" is the hope. But Julia finds herself involved in another mystery and murder and John Pickett is once again sent to investigate. He and Julia have become quite a good investigative duo and they combine their wits once again here in Scotland. The mystery involves the long-lost daughter of a family, her three cousins, one of them illegitimate, romantic entanglements, inheritances and wills and a possible pretender to the position of long-lost daughter. When the father/uncle dies, murder is suspected and the possible murderer could be one of many of the family members. This and the other two are cozy mysteries set during the early 1800s, very clean and wholesome, with a very low-key romance and Sheri Cobb South's pleasant, humorous writing style. I chose them to read based on my enjoyment of two of her Regencies, The Weaver Takes a Wife and Brighton Honeymoon. They are the delightful tales of the romance and marriage of a rich but undereducated businessman and the daughter of a duke. Those two I highly recommend.

John's and Julia's Relationship Progresses As They Investigate Their Third Murder By Judge Tabor This is the third full book featuring our steady and honorable young hero, John Pickett, Bow Street Runner, and the woman with whom he's become fascinated - Lady Julia Fieldhurst. In this book, we find John rethinking his life even as he is considering marrying Lucy, the little gal who is his erstwhile friend who is also a prostitute. Not that John has partaken of her services - no, indeed. In fact, John has lived a life of celibacy. It's just that he is losing hope of ever having the one lady who consumes his mind and heart - the lovely Julia, who is so far above his reach he figures why not marry Lucy? It would rescue her from the life she's living and so on and so forth. When he tells his mentor and boss, Magistrate Patrick Colquhoun, what he's thinking, Colquohoun figures out the best thing for John is to get him out of Dodge for awhile. This works out great, for indeed - there is a mystery to solve in Scotland and Colquohoun thinks to get in some fishing while he heads up the investigation with John working in the background. But... Lady Fieldhurst just happens to be in Scotland also - on a little vacation with her three nephews - the Bertram boys, who have recently learned they're illegitimate - a very tough road to hoe for the eldest, Harold. Julia's involved up to her pretty neck in the mysterious goings on in Scotland, which results in setting Julia and John up for another opportunity to work together even as their "more than friends" relationship further deepens. In fact, John isn't aware that Julia, wanting to remain incognito, registered at the local inn under the name Mrs. Pickett - never imagining in her wildest dreams that John would show up in Scotland to register at the same inn. When John finds out she has temporarily taken his name, it doesn't take much for his mind to go off in several different directions, especially since she's continually on his mind. But, now they must indeed pretend to be married, which adds considerably to the juice within the storyline. Yes, we even get treated to a bit of passionate kissing between the two which really sets John's blood pounding.**Spoilerish** Sooo... of course the mystery is eventually solved, even as we are privy to the furtherance of John's and Julia's relationship. But, neither John nor Julia actually realize the full implications of their pretending to be married and actually stating the fact to others in a public manner. Remember, it is Scotland. Can't wait until the next book to find out Julia's response once she realizes she might have accidentally married John by claiming to be his wife.Other books in this series:Pickpocket's Apprentice, In Milady's Chamber (John Pickett Mysteries Book 1), A Dead Bore (John Pickett Mysteries Book 2), Family Plot (John Pickett Mysteries Book 3)
