In the fourth book of the Tales of the Scavenger’s Daughters series, the fates of three people who’ve never met converge in profound and unexpected ways.

Mari, the daughter of the town scavenger, grew up knowing hardship, but she never could have anticipated the struggles that now face her as an adult. Feeling alone and isolated, she dreams of a better life. On the other side of town, a frightened little girl named An Ni is forced to live on the streets, but she silently longs for the one thing she’s never known—a family. Max, a struggling American photojournalist, arrives in China with only one goal in mind: to face his demons and put an end to his own unbearable suffering.

From the bestselling author of A Thread Unbroken comes an emotional, hope-filled story that offers a fresh glimpse into the life of a remarkable family.

Revised edition: This edition of Red Skies includes editorial revisions.

Red Skies (Tales of the Scavenger's Daughters Book 4), by Kay Bratt

From the Author Though Red Skies is the fourth book in the Tales of the Scavenger's Daughters, I wrote it to be enjoyed as a standalone without a cliff-hanger so that a reader may read it without having to start from the first book in the Tales of the Scavenger's Daughters and without having to read another book to get the conclusion.

By Mama to Many As with all of Kay's books, I could not put this book down until I had finished it.I felt like I was in Beijing in the apartment...watching first hand as everything unfolded right before my eyes. Kay's captivating way she intertwines her characters, the emotions, experiences, history, Mandarin, relationships... it was so real. I appreciated learning more about the street children of China and wanted to just reach out and hold them and tell them they were safe. I wiped many tears away, both happy and sad ones, as I read. I saw myself cringe, duck and shriek in terror... she makes her characters and experiences come alive.I loved this book!

By Mary Braxton I received this book in exchange for an honest review.Set in the world of the Tales of the Scavenger's Daughters series, Red Skies is Kay Bratt's newest, and best yet, work.It is another captivating story that manages to combine a story of fiction with elements of nonfiction that gives readers a look at China's history, language and culture. I am the type of reader that when I start a good book, I do not want to stop until I am done. Kay Bratt's works are definitely hard for me to fight that temptation so that I can take care of duties- I just want to read it cover-to-cover without stopping. This title, and the other titles in the series that this one is set in, can stand alone- if you have not read the other books (though I highly recommend you do so!), you are not missing anything. If you have read the other books, she gives you glimpses into storylines from those books and it is truly a continuance. This is great, since I never want the story to end! It is also a testament to her abilities as a writer, as there is a fine line between giving so much information that you are retelling the story from another book which could bore readers who have read it and not giving enough information for those who have not read the stories in a series. Mrs. Bratt does an outstanding job of making sure both sets of readers will have an intriguing story!

Right from the beginning of Red Skies the reader is drawn in to the story of Mari, Max & An Ni. The characters come to life as the story unfolds. As the story unfolds I laughed, cried & held my breath in anticipation. This is the perfect companion novel to the Tales of the Scavenger' Daughters! Mari made her first appearance in Tangled Vines as one of Benfu & Calli's daughters. Red Skies tells the story of Mari's life in Beijing away from her forever family. Life is not always what it seems. We put on a show for the outside world. And then we go home, and the truth comes out. Mari's life is not what she thought it would have been. One day she sees 11 year old An Ni on a street corner begging. Mari knows that life and has An Ni on her mind. When Mari meets up with Max, a foreigner from the United States, the story gets more complicated. Max has his own devil to deal with.I highly suggest you purchase this book to find out what happens. You will not be sorry. Kay Bratt's books are always a must read!
