From the Author Shrub is the result of a fascinating collaboration between me and Rick Wilson, a friend, writer (and dentist who needs to look at my teeth soon). The title came to Rick from an email from a friend--and that friend was innocent of any thought that this wayward phrase would become the basis for a long short story. And for a novel to come.Rick supplied the protagonist's name, Pinky DeVroom, and vroom, off we went, writing alternate chapters. In Rick's words, "The story starts at that precise moment when the Roaring Twenties was crushed down into the Whimpering Twenties by The Crash, the biggest single economic tragedy in American history. And this ignoble setting allowed us to take a flawed but generally likable fellow who was just on the cusp of fantastic success after years of noble effort and crush him down right along with the Market. By Joel D Canfield Bentley and Wilson are wordsmiths, appreciators of the unusual. The story, about a chap knocked down, struggling to get up again in life, finding help from a surprising quarter: yes, the story is good. Fun. Smart. Fulfilling.But unlike some short stories which are only stories, Pink and his time at The Shrub are worth rereading for the feel of the words on the tongue. Delightful and engaging, and a likely template for my own short stories when I get around to writing them.(Both authors are friends of mine, but if the book wasn't wonderful I wouldn't be here telling you about it.)
