Where Outlaws Ruled By Charles Wheeler The Border Legion has without a doubt the greatest of Zane Grey's villains--the blond beast, Gulden, whose way with women was a rope and a cave, the most vicious and depraved of the border bandits. And as in earlier works by Zane Grey this novel had to undergo many editorial changes demanded by his publisher before they would print it. Things today which seem very tame indeed, but yet his editors felt did not belong in fiction, regardless of how historically accurate Zane Grey was being to actual events upon which this book was based. When Joan Randle decides to follow her 'boyfriend' Jim Cleve after he departs because of a quarrel she finds herself captured by this outlaw gang and held, only to find out Jim has joined them as well. (She had accused Jim of not being man enough to even be bad, so he sets out to prove her wrong.) This book is a fascinating look at what happens to men, I should say, mankind, when driven by their passions and left to revert to the barbaric when the environment is one of dog eat dog i.e. "survival of the fittest" a phrase used by Darwin and popularized by Zane Grey, as he subscribed to some of Darwin's theories, as seen in many of his novels as he expressed his philosophy of life, and concerns for America in his writings. It has been said more students learned of Darwin's theory from reading Zane Grey than they did in the class room. But if one goes beyond any "hidden" agenda and reads this book as a novel of escapism and adventure and romance it is a good read I think you will enjoy.P.S. If you want the unexpurgated version as Zane Grey wrote it buy a copy of Cabin Gulch, Five Star Westerns 2006.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Damsel in Distress By Martin D. Gibbs After having recently finished "30,000 on the Hoof," this one was a little bit of a disappointment. Still 3 stars because it is Zane Grey, and the writing is terrific (for the period.)Here we have the "damsel-in-distress" who is taken in by a bandit. But he's not so bad. Or is he? Oh, he's really bad, and I'm scared. Yes, but today he seems pretty clean; he didn't take advantage of me, like he wanted to. But the other guy over there is REALLY bad. My captor? Not so much. All right, today he's mean and I want to escape. Oh look! Here's my hometown sweetheart! It is he whom I followed in the first place; and this brilliant idea got me into this mess. All right, I'll hide out for a while, then we'll get married and we can escape. Except the bad guys are really kind of nice in a way and my sweetheart is in with them, so we have to be careful....One does not get gratuitous blood and violence with Zane Grey. Although the later scenes are a little intense, I think this is one of those books where he could have skimped a little on the hostage theme and ended it with a bit more hot lead and cordite. But it does not take away from the fact that this was a very good story, well told, and a decent read.Just not my favorite.

Moore I am a great fan of Zane Grey as a writer in general and of "The Border Legion" in particular. One of the nice things about Grey's work -- as opposed to, say, Louis L'Amour characters -- is that the central figures are not near super men/women. They are cut from the cloth of other humans struggling to discover a strength within them they didn't know they had. This makes it easier to imagine yourself inside the story rather than as a sideline observer. Another aspect of Grey's writing is that it is filled with the wonderful coloring of a naturalist describing the landscape. You will either like this or not as it could seem to some a bit overdone. I happen to enjoy it a lot as it makes the landscape as much a character as are his heroes, heroines and villains. And, of course, he tells a good story. This book is a corking good action and romance novel. If you haven't read a Zane Grey novel yet, "The Border Legion" is a good one to begin with.Now, as to not yet being a fan of Kindle, perhaps I just need more time to get used to using an electronic device. On the plus side, having a large library at hand with just a few touches of the screen is wonderful. But as I sit in my reading chair with a "cuppa" I miss the satisfaction of holding a book in my hands and turning the page.
