A figure skating prodigy, sixteen-year old Alivopro Doyle is one of a few "hopefuls" racing against nature's clock to try and jump and spin their way into the Olympics. But when a disastrous fall fractures two vertebrae, leaving Ali addicted to painkillers and ultimately institutionalized, it's not just her dreams of glory that get torn asunder, but the very fabric that holds her fragile family together.

Review Named A 5 Under 35 pick by the National Book Foundation."Ali’s caustic, unapologetically self-centered voice is strong and well-developed, and the secondary characters—especially Ali’s parents, but also her tutor and her pregnant cousin—offer both thematic reinforcement and opportunities for humor."—Publishers Weekly"...the book soars in its descriptions of figure skating, capturing its strange and brutal beauty and achieving a beauty of its own in the process."—Kirkus“Tracy O’Neill is a brilliant and bold new literary voice, and The Hopeful is destined to be one of the most exciting debut novels of the year.”—Julia Fierro, author of Cutting Teeth: A Novel"The Hopeful is a fine debut, smartly exploring the costs of obsession and trauma, the wages of daring to chase your boldest dreams. Tracy O’Neill’s gift for precise and surprising detail reveals her page after page to be a smart and compelling storyteller, whose gripping first novel is sure to thrill readers.”—Matt Bell, author of In the House Upon the Dirt Between the Lake and the Woods“In her hypnotic debut, Tracy O’Neill has created an indelible character in Alivopro Doyle, a young woman trapped in an anguished tangle of identity and fierce ambition. Though Doyle fights to keep us at arm’s length with crackling comebacks, we can’t help but notice, and want to protect, her tender brokenness as she struggles to break free from a body that has failed her.”—Karolina Waclawiak, author of How to Get Into the Twin Palms

Exciting debut novel By Abby After an injury takes her off the ice, Alivopro Doyle resorts to more and more desperate attempts to return to figure skating and compete in the Olympics. Intriguing debut novel. Loved reading about figure skating, and especially loved reading about such am ambitious female protagonist, which is rare in literary fiction. The characters were memorable and complex, and the author has a gift for description.

Often I pass on books that seem to be about sports, not because I don't like sports, I am just not interested in reading novels about them. This one is different! I had read many good reviews about this first time author but Ms. O'Neill exceeded my expectations."The Hopeful" is much more than yet another book about skating. It delves into the mind and body of this very tough, dedicated, determined athlete who is hungry to be on top. When skating is the topic you feel the chill of the ice. When she is in therapy sessions the dialogue makes you feel you are right there. Her family relationships are complex and yes, a bit crazy. I had trouble putting this book down.Alivopro Doyle is a beautifully developed character with all the strengths and weaknesses of a brilliant competitor.Read this book, you will not be disappointed!Congratulations on your wonderful first novel, Tracy O'Neill! Keep them coming!

It never gets bogged down in its own melodrama and yet through Ali's own skewed perspective, colored by her questions of identity and her difficult relationship with her father, we're deeply moved by her plight. This is a book adults will read and though it will stretch older teen readers in some ways, I believe they too will find much that's relevant in their own lives. It's a tremendous first novel from a writer to watch. I'll be looking out for more from Tracy O'Neill.
