Bearings and Distances by Glenn Arbery, is a novel of comic ironies and tragic recurrences set in the “post-racial” moment of the American experiment. In the summer after Barack Obama’s election, Hermia Watson, a scholar of black history, lures the famous (and famously irresponsible) Professor Braxton Forrest back to his hometown in Georgia, using his two daughters as unwitting hostages. Returning alone while his pious wife continues touring Italy, Forrest arrives to the tremblings of his abandoned past and a confrontation with the Furies he thought modernity had left behind. In the course of a few days, Hermia realizes what violent revelations she has begun to unleash about her former lover, her mother, and her own identity—but it is too late to stop what is coming to light. Arbery revisits the obsessions of the 20th century Southern renaissance in a work that satirizes misconceptions and shallow pieties but takes seriously the wisdom of the Southern literary tradition—and its classical antecedents.

Bearings and Distances, by Glenn Arbery

About the Author Glenn Arbery, the descendant of generations of Southerners and the father of eight children, grew up in the small-town South during a time of great change and strife. He attended the University of Georgia before taking his Ph.D. at the University of Dallas, and he has taught literature for over three decades. He is the author of Why Literature Matters (ISI, 2001), and the editor of The Tragic Abyss (Dallas Institute Press, 2004) and The Southern Critics: An Anthology (ISI, 2011). He now lives and teaches in Wyoming with his wife Virginia. Much as he loves the courtesy and humor of his native place, much as he admires the heroes of the Confederacy—Lee, Jackson, and Forrest, in particular—he has spent much of his life elsewhere. Yet he feels no sympathy with those, ever increasing in number and forgetfulness, who seem easy in their ideological dismissal of the graces and pieties of this land that gave rise to William Faulkner, Allen Tate, Caroline Gordon, Flannery O’Connor, and Walker Percy—this region whose tragic experience and comic hope reflect and deepen the biblical and classical strains that form the Western tradition.

Mercer Bearings & Distances is one of the best books I've read in a long time. The setting is a small town in the deep south, which always peaks my interest. The author's beautiful way with language brings every character and scene to life in details that make you feel as if you have been there before. The time period is familiar to me; I am just a bit older than the main character and went to college in a small southern town. LIfe then was a dichotomy in the deep south. My side of it was filled with the graciousness, beauty and richness of the south. Being raised as a proper southern girl or boy was a source of pride in my family. But, at the same time, I was well aware of the ugliness that was deep-seeded, especially in my parents' generation, where strong racial bigotry was considered bad form in polite society but was open and vicious everyday behavior by others. Boundaries were still pretty firm in those days, but change was in the air. The storyline was intriguing from the very start and continued to amaze me as lifelong secrets and lies began to come to light. It is a beautiful piece of literature, filled with rich, complicated characters and a scandalous mystery. It is obvious that the author thoroughly understands the strong, rich, messy heritage that many southerners still feel deep into their bones. My only problem with the book is that it ended! I want to know more about these people! Perhaps I need to read it again, this time paying more attention to the inevitable underlying themes that my desire to finish caused me to overlook! As in a boundary survey, if it doesn't close it has to be done all over again. Maybe I will adjust my bearings and distances and find what more of what is underneath it all!

Even the worst of the lot is presented with affection and (dare we say?) charity. It's comedy is akin to Dante's or Faulkner's, and coming from Arbery's mind, this is no surprise. The story is haunting. When reading, I couldn't put it down. Now that I've finished it, I can't stop thinking about it. Highly recommended!

Each character is laid bare, exposed and raw as they encounter the antiheroes central to the storyline. Inevitably, one "private sin" tumbles into another, then another, until every character's life is irreversibly intertwined.
