By Bookaholic FIREBIRD, has become my favourite Susanna Kearsley novel to date..***There are NO spoilers in my review***When a carving called the Firebird, leads Nicola Marter, a young women with psychic abilities, on an exciting adventure across Europe from England, Scotland, Belgium to Russia she is aided by Rob McMorran, her friend from Scotland, who's psychic abilities are even greater than Nicola's, suddenly, the Past meets the Present...Firebird, is a beautifully written novel, where the story just flows from the pages and is captivating from the first page to the last. It is clear that Susanna Kearsley was passionate about her characters and her story when she wrote this novel. You can tell that the historical information in this novel, had been very well researched and it is quite interesting.The novel has an engaging story plot and dialogue which transfers between contemporary and historical characters with ease. I also found this novel to be extremely visual. I felt my senses come alive while reading this wonderful story. I was travelling with the characters from England to Scotland to Belgium and on to Russia and what a wonderful journey it was! I found myself completely engrossed by the lives of the characters and the excellent plot. The journey involved an exciting adventure, that I did not want to see come to an end and the protagonists in this story, were so endearing, that I found myself emotionally attached to them.... Simply put, "It was a Damn Good Read!"

Still being my favorites Mariana and The Winter Sea, to my surprise this is a new book that also follow up with the beloved characters of The Winter Sea!! One of the main characters is also a dear one (all grown up now) from The Shadowy Horses.Nicola works for a respectable art dealer in London who specializes in Russian art. She also posses the gift (a curse in her opinion) of psychometry. Thanks to her abilities she decides to help a woman who is in great need to sell an old wooden crave figure of a Firebird. She told Nicola that the Firebird has been in her family for generations and was given to her ancestor by Catherine I of Russia. Since its impossible to prove the real value of the crave figure, Nicola starts a quest to find the true story of the Firebird with the hope to prove the value of the piece. She doubts her abilities and is afraid to use them, therefore she decided to ask for the help of Rob (an ex boyfriend), who is highly gifted in the paranormal.During their quest we met Anna, a lovely girl from the past that grown up as a very likeable and strong woman. She is one of the leading characters of the book and is the daughter of Sophia and John Moray. By a leap of faith she became the ward of Vice Admiral Gordon who was commissioned in Russia by Peter the Great.It continues the story of the Jacobites who fled to Russia and lived and served their King from the Russian Courts. New characters, new romance, new intrigues and more history, of course.Nicola exhausted my patience for moments during length of the story; until she is finally able to embrace who she is. Rob is adorable, but we already knew his character from The Shadowy Horses.A book that will be greatly enjoyed for those already familiar with the author and her work and new ones alike. Beware that you wont be able to put the book down until the very end... **SPOILER ALERT*** You'll find out what happened to Sophia and John Moray!! But is not my tale to tell, you must read the book!

Not as Compelling as Winter Sea By Diana Faillace Von Behren Susanna Kearsley, in her latest novel, revisits her Jacobite landscape with a sure hand that is certain to captivate her fans, but unfortunately with not the same degree of fascination as her previous novels with a paranormal flare.Although "the FIrebird" is not billed as a sequel to "The Winter Sea" (also entitled "Sophia's Secret," it is just that. Indeed, the story line can stand alone, but in order to thoroughly enjoy this novel in the fullest manner, guessing along, jumping to conclusions and being interactive, it is recommended that "Sea" be read first. Nonetheless, "The Firebird" is not as compelling a read as its predecessor. The present day framing technique that worked so well for author Susanna Kearsley in "Sea" snags a bit when main character Rob McMorran of The Shadowy Horses, The fame, partners up with first person narrator Nicola Marter in order to discover the history of an item--a wooden firebird object d'art said to be once in the possession of the Czarina Catherine of Russia.Its not that the chemistry between the two is bad; it isn't. In fact, Kearsley, as always, does a marvelous job of creating male characters that complement her women heroines quite well. Rob, all grown up from his cameo role in a previous novel, could make a grown girl cry: not only is he dazzlingly handsome, but underspoken, kind, dependable and patient. However, perhaps it is just this last quality that keeps the frame story from being rated on the same level as those in other Kearsley novels. Rob's desire to allow Nicola the room to grow her particular skill set on her own, in her own good time frustrates the reader because it stymies their inevitable romance. Of course, as in all good alchemical pairings, the actual acceptance by the couple themselves that indeed, yes, they are going to be together for a while, should be part of the climatic conclusion and grow the excitement generated by their eventual realization. This reviewer got the sense that Kearsley stalls this story line, wanting to hold back its dramatic denouement until the story of the past catches up and, in effect, manages to labor the reader's patience even while bolstering and illustrating this virtue of her present day hero Rob. Graham, the modern time love interest form "Winter Sea" never gets in the way of protagonist and first person narrator Carrie. But perhaps, the fact that both of them seem victims of happenstance--best selling historical novelist Carrie envisions the past story as she retreats to a Scots cottage to write her next book--flavors the supernatural quality of what goes on with more credibility as no one has a clue and it is up to Kearsley to make it all seem possible by telling a good story that supercedes what may be unthinkable or unrealistic. In "Firebird" both her hero and heroine are thoroughly aware of their activity as catalysts which subtracts the paranormal gooseflesh rise from their vantage points.Both Nicole and Rob possess special extrasensory qualities that allow them to investigate the firebird's authenticity not through any ordinary research. Fans of Kearsley will gladly remember the young Robbie from Scotland communing with the Roman Sentinel from the first millennium as if this were an everyday occurrence that wouldn't rate the bat of an eye. In "Firebird" we discover that Rob has honed his skill, participating in research programs at a distinguished paranormal institute where as a younger man he first met Nicola. In turn, Nicola's talent also exists, but she fears it, hiding it from those with whom she works, knowing full well her hard-earned credibility as an antiques accessor would come into jeopardy. She contacts Rob despite the fact that they were involved in a could-be relationship, so badly does she want to help the woman who needs an immediate source of the large funds that could result from the sale of her might-be valuable antique Firebird.Once Rob and Nicola begin their mental journey, handling the item and using it to act as a compass directing them into virtual images of the past, the novel rapidly covers a lot of ground, moving from Slains Castle of the previous book, to Calais and finally to St. Petersburg in Russia where the story of little Anna, an orphan of the Jacobite Rebellion searches for purpose and eventually finds contentment and love.Kearsley obviously loves the Jacobite period, filling the pages of this almost 500 page book with Scots' dialect of fierce men and women who worry about the greater good rather than their individual happiness. Some repeat characters from "Winter Sea" make the transition well; most notably the distinguished Colonel Graeme, while others, well, the reader must conjecture as to who they all might be and how they fit into the schema of the first novel. For those who loved "Winter Sea" there is not much to guess. Even if the characters themselves do not know their identities, we certainly do. However, because Kearsley makes us wait, the enjoyment of the ultimate disclosure is somewhat diminished.Bottom line? In "The Firebird," author Susanna Kearsely again uses a paranormal theme to transport the reader back with the fierce men and women of Jacobite times. Those who loved "The Winter Sea" will appreciate the reappearance of some of its characters but might not like as well the slower-to-develop relationship between her present day leads.
