“Suzan Still’s FIESTA OF SMOKE is an extraordinary book, encompassing a vast time frame yet bringing the possibility of a contemporary Mexican revolution to vivid life through its beautifully tuned, disparate voices. With a tonality that at times echoes the quiet grace of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA, matched by passages that have the psychotic edginess of BREAKING BAD, Fiesta of Smoke is a book that will both compel and seduce you to read it to its haunting conclusion.” – Alexander Stuart, author of THE WAR ZONE and LIFE ON MARS “As with the brush of a muralist, Suzan Still has captured 50 years of the history of Mexico in vivid color. This passionate, non-linear novel explores the lives of three very different people involved in decades of political upheaval, and sounds the depth of injustices done for centuries there. Gripping in its detail, and daring in its reach, Fiesta of Smoke is a moving portrayal of the disparate cultures and complexity of a turbulent, beautiful country.” – M. E. Hirsh, author of KABUL and DREAMING BACK Against a backdrop of rebellion and intrigue, love between Javier Carteña, commander of insurgent Mexican forces, and Calypso Searcy, an American novelist at the pinnacle of her career, sizzles with passion across a broad sweep of history. Encompassing time from the Conquest of the 1500s to the present, the story races across space as well, from the forests of Chiapas to the city of Paris. There, an international investigative reporter named Hill picks up the swiftly vanishing trail of Calypso’s disappearance, and unwittingly becomes involved in one of the great dramas of the twentieth century and one of the great love stories of any age.

Hirsh, author of Kabul)Suzan Still’s Fiesta of Smoke is a literary tour de force that explores how long-suppressed and marginalized people are rising phoenix-like from the ashes of their sacrificial fires. The smoky wings of these transfigured beings are gallantly abroad in the pages of this book. Feminine energy especially is emerging as a force to be reckoned with in every aspect of global life. Fiesta of Smoke is an exquisitely written and powerfully rendered chronicle of divine feminine resurrection. (Julie Loar, author of Goddesses for Every Day)

By Louise Jolly Story Description:Fiction Studio Books|March 5, 2013|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-193655855-1Against a backdrop of rebellion and intrigue, love between Javier Cartena, commander of insurgent Mexican forces, and Calypso Searcy, an American novelist at the pinnacle of her career, sizzles with passion across a broad sweep of history. Encompassing time from the Conquest of the 1550s to the present, the story races across space as well, from the forests of Chiapas to the city of Paris. There, an international investigative reporter named Hill picks up the swiftly vanishing trail of Calypso's disappearance, and unwittingly becomes involved in one of the great dramas of the twentieth century and one of the great love stories of any age.My Review:Fiesta of Smoke reads like a history book with a deeply passionate love story interwoven throughout the story. From Paris to California to Mexico with great learning potential, the book powerfully unravels how tradition, culture, and sense of place affect the human heart. It brings to life the power of the story and at the same time challenges us to discover all there is to know about Mexico and the Conquest of the 1500s to the present.Steeped in the history of Mexico, you will come to realize that to fully understand this story is a profound discovery and it's the very exact opportunity offered to us, the readers.Aside from the Mexican history and its gleaming landscape, is the most beautiful and most powerful love story between the two main protagonists: Calypso Searcy and Javier Cartena. Calypso is an American author at the height of her career who writes under the pen name, David Rockland. Javier is commander of insurgent Mexican forces. Their love is one that women the world over wish they had and strive to find.Fiesta of Smoke was a beautiful piece of narrative that looks into the mysteries of days gone-by and the joys of the human heart. Ms. Still has penned a rare must-read treat! I will definitely be keeping this as part of my permanent collection as it is the type of book that I want to experience again and again and again. Well-done!!

Barbara Kingsolver is tops on my list of favorite writers and Suzan Still, with Fiesta of Smoke, has matched if not surpassed her. With both writers the reader has to read every word or something important will be missed. The reader cannot skip or zone out while reading. Not a sentence is unimportant. There are so many levels to this story and each character has so much depth. I got so attached to the main ones! The novel has everything: love, history, social commentary, mystery and adventure. I cannot do it justice in my review. You'll just have to read it and see for yourself. This is a beautifully written book, passionate, poetic, insightful and meaningful.I could not put Fiesta of Smoke down, and was completely satisfied when finished. Now, I can't wait to read Still's other novel, Commune of Women, and eagerly await the promised sequel to Fiesta of Smoke.

FIESTA OF SMOKE IS A MUST READ By Shelley Muniz Suzan Still's command of language, description, and her memorable cast of characters place Fiesta of Smoke among my favorite reads. From the first page we are plunged into the story with urgency, traveling to Paris, Berkeley, CA, and then into the heart of Mexico with Calypso, Javier, and Hill - each of them committed to cause, to life, and to each other. In Fiesta of Smoke, we are led on a moral and ethical journey, pushed to the heart of reason, and at times, left clinging to hope. As a reader, I didn't want this story to end. Still's characters became my companions in an adventure worthy of note.
