It's a book to lose yourself in on a lazy afternoon and at the same time it will have you searching for those spare minutes of the day to devour more. A compelling book which takes the reader so effortlessly to another time and place through the narrative of the protagonist Julia. Floating Upstream is a book for the dreamers and the pragmatists alike.

Beautiful Writing and Great Characters By Write_Obsession I’m finding it really difficult to put into words all of the things this story made me feel. And there were so many mixed feelings that Floating Upstream managed to evoke from the whole emotional spectrum. I thought the writing was quite serene and tied in really well with the title and theme of the river and the water being the place where Julia took refuge. The plot is quite slow but I feel like this was almost a reflection of the small country town lifestyle. Vraca paints an incredibly vivid picture of the monotony but also the tranquillity of Goldburne and as the story progresses the town itself almost becomes a character of its own. The characters in Floating Upstream were well fleshed out and very imperfect which I found frustrating but also understood to be true to life. The story dealt with a number of social issues like violence and sexual freedom and as it was set in the 1970s, I had to keep reminding myself that the reaction I had to the behaviour of some of the characters was unreasonable for the social context of the book. I enjoyed Julia as the POV character and really felt for her trying to break free from her parent’s traditional values. In another time Julia could really have been a wild child but the expectations of her family and also the people of the town really weighed heavily on her. I liked that Julia made a lot of mistakes and she paid the dearly for some of them which doesn’t often happen in other contemporary novels. My only issue with Julia was that the only times I really felt as though she had agency was when she was going to meet Robbie for a late night encounter. Most of the rest of the time she would often think and say things but when it came down to it she didn’t really push the boundaries. This was most evident when she tried to ignore the arranged marriage her parents had set up for her and during those times when her father was violent and it almost seemed like she was having an out of body experience throughout when I would have liked for her to stick up for herself. Again though, this is probably my own perception being clouded by today’s standards. Most of the other characters are well fleshed out and I enjoyed reading about them, although I wasn’t a huge fan of Robbie as the love interest and couldn’t really understand his appeal. Even if he was attractive, I just couldn’t get on board with the fact that they had literally no contact for months on end and he didn’t even have the decency to write to Julia even though she practically begged him to. Even if I discount the many double standards in their relationship, they just didn’t seem to have much in common and it felt to me like Julia was just someone Robbie was using to pass the time. Overall, Floating Upstream was a really engaging read for me. I was invested in Julia’s struggle and loved the great description of the town and the slow paced lifestyle. If you’re looking for a great Australian read, why not give this a try?

Gritty, compelling coming-of-age tale set in Australia By OneReader I truly enjoyed Floating Upstream, but I cannot recommend it without a few reservations. Readers who are uncomfortable with the portrayal of casual profanity, promiscuity, explicit sex, drug use, and heavy smoking will not appreciate this book. That said, it’s a gritty, accurate portrayal of the society Vraca is writing about. Her characters, while not angels, are well constructed and realistic. The elder generation carries on traditions that are painfully out of step with modern values, and the younger generation struggles to break free. Even when we don’t like some of them, we sympathize with them. The story is rich and dark, with an element of fragile hope wound through it. It's based on an element of society I’d never thought of: Foreigners in Australia during World War II, who were interned much as America interned the Japanese, without reason or conscience, and who remain a disparaged minority at the time described in the book.In the final analysis, this is a story about searching for love, and about the way we carry our secrets and allow them to distort our lives and the lives of those we care about.Vraca has a way with words and imagery, as you can see from this passage: The dappled sun caramelised her skin and prickled her face like Robbie’s skin when he kissed her body. Everything reminded her of Robbie, even sunburn.(Received a review copy in exchange for this honest review.)

About the Author

Carol Rowan has always enjoyed making things with her hands. She would buy old scraps of lace, remnants of silk, paint flowers on them, and then lay them all out and make them up into a patchwork.  From making hats, to creating toys, or sewing wedding dresses, there is not much that Carol hasn’t turned her crafting skill to.  Carol first got into Felting some years ago when she was given some sheep’s wool, felting needles, a felting pad and a book.  These figures have taken on a life of their own and have been sent all over the world. his is Carol’s second book after ‘I Felt a Bit Funny’.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. 98% Christmas-Oriented and 100% Fun By SLS Even folks who don't celebrate Christmas will find Carol Rowan's I Felt A Bit Festive to be a fun and useful book. There are a couple of non-denominational figures such as snowmen and gnomes. Plus, Ms. Rowan provides a fast-track felting immersion program, with compact instructions and helpful tips and photographs. Crafters who are new to needle felting will become dyed-in-the-wool converts (sorry, I just had to) after reading this compact primer. It's a small book at 8 by 8 5/8 inches, but its 133 pages of text and photos are big on content.I think the gnomes are my favorite project, looking even more gnome-y when you display several together. They make great use of the curly fibers of specialized wools. Ms. Rowan shows how embellishments such as acorns can give your figures extra character and life. The Happy New Year Baby, while a bit freakish, is still captivating. It captures the casual comical spirit of the book.Felting is not an exact science, so every creature you make will be its own unique project. The figures here are not going for realism and awe, compared to the cleverly artful "felted dog" books out right now. But with experience and the right tools, you can take needle felting anywhere your imagination takes you.This book, a few rovings of wool, and a felting needle would make a lovely gift for someone.P.S. This book, as wonderful as it is, does not contain any sources for felting matrials, most notably wool fibers. The book has roots in the lands of New Zealand and Australia, the heaven on Earth for wool fiber funsters. By the end of its astonishing first chapter--just three pages-- you know for sure it's a work of art. Each of the remaining short chapters, while playing its part in the intertwined plot, is a faceted gem of deep and playful writing, stunningly beautiful imagery, and crafted observation of and speculation on life with its many complications-- meditations worth re-enjoying. The "obscure" protagonist is Sam Kite. His dilemmas are familiar to us in the here and now (and always): loneliness and the frittering away of his time and talents in a dull daytime job. Without traveling to another continent or another universe, Kite makes a great human journey by following up on a saccade--one of those too easily-overlooked interstices, a vision-that-becomes-real of a Woman in White, herself a most unlikely companion for him-- and thus the surprising story is set to spin. Chris Bell is a wonderful writer that truly embodies the craft of Wordsmith By Lawrence M Smith Chris Bell is a wonderful writer that truly embodies the craft of Wordsmith. His usage of precise description constructs many reactions in his readers. I enjoyed the book tremendously as his focus on details takes you through many prisms to view his characters. Oft times with very short and precise usage of language not regularly found in today's literature. Highly recommend.

I never thought it could be so simple. Reshma goes into detail, yet keeps it simple so that anyone can understand how to do each step. I love the pictures showing how to hold the tools correctly. I'd highly recommend reading this book before for your next knitting projects.

Really great job with putting the book together in terms of outlines and what to talk about every certain chapters. Interestingly enough, I didn't even know that there's such thing as different type of yarns! Hahaha Great crash course for newbies :)

About the Author Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu (28 August 1814 – 7 February 1873) was an Irish writer of Gothic tales and mystery novels. He was the leading ghost-story writer of the nineteenth century and was central to the development of the genre in the Victorian era. Three of his best known works are Uncle Silas, Carmilla and The House by the Churchyard.

Sheridan LeFanu's "Carmilla" stands as one of the richest, most literate and most enduring stories in the history of the vampire sub-genre. Many rate it higher than Bram Stoker's "Dracula," and while that estimation is at least debatable, there is no debate that "Carmilla" has exerted a mighty influence, consciously or not, on most vampire fiction to follow in its wake, "Dracula" not excepted. Indeed, Stoker's original early chapter in his masterpiece, later published independently as "Dracula's Guest," is particularly indebted to LeFanu's earlier work. As to which is better, let each reader decide for himself--and so enjoy them both!The story is deceptively simple. A young girl, shaken up in a carriage accident, is left by her traveling mother in the care of the narrator's father. Laura, the young woman in whose voice we are told the tale, becomes fast friends with her new acquaintance, a friendship that is put to a powerful test when a strange malady begins infesting the idyllic Styrian countryside with nightmares, fever, and death.LeFanu's style is unhurried, intelligent, and subtle, and the result is an eminently readable tale of mystery and the macabre that holds up remarkably well to repeated perusals. Though not as famous as "Dracula," and certainly written on a much smaller scale than Stoker's epic vampire opus, "Carmilla" is the more sustained and concentrated of the two. Many have traditionally argued that the novella, or short novel, is the ideal vehicle for a horror story, allowing for plenty of characterization and plot development without pushing the story itself beyond its dramtic limits. This reviewer tends to agree, and asserts that whereas "Dracula," masterwork that it is, often flags and succumbs to the doldrums, "Carmilla" never wavers and holds interest to the bittersweet end.Originally published in 1871, "Carmilla" was quite sensational in its day, but I know many will not judge it to have aged well. A far cry from many modern vampire tales, "Carmilla" is probably not for everyone, or even every vampire fan. The deliberate pace, old-world feel, delicate characterization, subtlety, and relative brevity of the story may be turn-offs to those who expect page after page of gory action and explicit sex from their horror. Be that as it may, discerning readers will find few indulgences better than LeFanu's "Carmilla," a gothic triumph which will endure as long as vampire tales are read.

33 of 35 people found the following review helpful. Another Le Fanu Surprise! By Ingrid G. I read this short story in one sitting and could not put it down. Another hidden freebie I discovered by chance. Not gory like other vampire books, but simply leads us into life of a female vampire and her passion for the next victim. The love/obsession she has for her victim is delicately potrayed, but surely was controversial at the time this was written. Vampire lovers must read this, as it served as the inspiration of many other vampire works - such as the famous Dracula. This my second novel of this author in 24 hours - 100% free and good. I am impressed and will continue reading his other material. (review written from my Kindle2)

Sheridan Le Fanu's 1872 novella as part of a graduate independent study of gothic literature. It quickly became a personal favorite, as well as an integral part of what will (hopefully) one day become my dissertation.Carmilla tells the tale of a vampire (or oupire, as the peasants refer to them in the novella) who preys on young women; Carmilla becomes intimately attached to the daughter or ward of a wealthy family, and in her pursuit of love and friendship (and perhaps other things...) eventually drains her new found "friend" of her blood and her life. Predating Bram Stoker's classic tale by 25 years, and following the publication of Polidori's short story by 53 years, Le Fanu's tale is one of the first to popularize the figure of the vampire in 19th-century English prose, and has done much to help popularize the subject.What I find particularly interesting about this work is the hybridization of traditional vampire legends (dating back to stories of Lilith herself) and the evolving contemporary vampire mythology of 19th-century England. Like traditional tales, Carmilla is represented as a young woman, and her victims often describe a sense of being strangled in their beds. However, the tale also presents elements of more contemporary ideas, such as a coffin full of blood and long needle-like fangs.I won't go more in-depth for fear of turning a review into a chapter, but I can't praise Carmilla enough. It is a tale sure to delight anyone with interests in 19th-century prose, gothic literature, or vampires (or any combination thereof). LeFanu is a master of gothic tales, and Carmilla is a credit to his name and his craft.

By david The Scrapbook is a tangled tale of mutually destructive relationships, played out over the course of three generations. Set on the (fictional) islands of Sorel and Spur, Holmes creates an effective sense of claustrophobia and distrust between the two central protagonists, Fern and her gin-soaked mother, as they claw and snipe at each other inside the confines of the family home. Fern's mother is a sad picture of wasted potential, choosing to spend her days waiting for the return of her lover Lawrence, a married man and the father of her child. Long years of regret and frustration have robbed her of perspective, and she chooses to drown her sorrows in drink - or at least, as much drink as Fern allows her to get her talons on. The island setting heightens the sense of isolation, as the characters are restrained both by their physical location as well as a shared history and genetic penchant for catastrophe and bad decision-making.What might have been a rather torrid read is leavened by flashes of wit, a talent for imagery, and an intriguing dose of magic. Fern attempts to track down both her long-lost father, and a mysterious spellbook once owned by her grandmother. There are amusing and convincing descriptions of spells - very much 'practical magic' of the ancient rural sort, used to cure sick cattle or make a man fall in love with you (etc). An element of genuine horror accompanies the description of magic and the effect of spells on people. No twee, fairytale enchantments here: this is the real stuff, from the blood and the bone, and passed down through generations. In that sense the book is vaguely reminiscent of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, though the magical element is more subtle, and rooted entirely in humans rather than a specific Otherworld.If I have any complaint, it is that the book is a trifle short, with little obvious scope for a sequel. Time for Fern to kick aside the useless relatives and embrace her magical heritage, perhaps?

Rubery Book Award 2015 Fiction Shortlist By Rubery Award This is a vivid novel by a clearly talented writer about three generations of a dysfunctional family, and their history of making bad decisions about men. Fern, the youngest, returns to the family home to look after her ailing mother Iris, and begins to research the whereabouts of Lawrence, Fern’s absent father to whose memory Iris has devoted her life. The toxic relationship between Fern and Iris is particularly well-rendered, and the latter’s fixation on her lost lover is a touching portrayal of self-destructive obsession. A well-structured, fluent novel with strong characterisation.

Family reunion By DubaiReader I had expected to enjoy this book as I'm a great fan of Indian fiction, but unfortunately, I couldn't settle into the author's style and felt the book needed considerable editing.Three of Chitralekha's four grandchildren are flying in from overseas to celebrate her 84th birthday; a momentous occasion in Nepalese culture. With them they bring resentments, aspirations and family history.The elderly Chitralekha was quite a character, but she didn't seem to really like any of her grandchildren, none of them was quite good enough for her. The only person she appeared to have any affection for was her maid, Prashanti, a eunuch with an interesting story.I was very confused about the ethnicity of the characters and had to refer to Wikipedia to establish precisely where Gangtok was situated and how it was related to Bhutan and Nepal. As a Western reader I felt this was a missed opportunity for the author to educate his readers. There was background but it needed a clearer explanation.There were also a lot of colloquialisms that needed translation and even some unnecessary language (Kindle loc 2298 and 2300 for example).I finished the book but I was disappointed. I didn't much like any of the characters, all of whom were unbelievably self-centred. Not a book I'd recommend in spite of the high ratings of others.I loved the cover though :)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Novel set in Gangtok, India By TripFiction This is a debut novel from Prajwal Parajuly which brings several strands to the reader’s attention. It is set in Gangtok, a Nepali-speaking area in the Himalaya of India – people originally ousted from Bhutan. The author’s passion for this area of the country and its history is truly palpable.Grandmother Chitralekha – Amaa to her grandchildren – is about to celebrate her landmark 84th birthday, the Chaurasi, and she awaits the arrival of 3 grandchildren. The fourth grandchild is not invited. This is very much a story about belonging, about resettlement and dislocation, and what it is like to live far away from indigenous and familiar country and culture. For granddaughter Bhagwati, caste issues have literally cast her out – she married her husband Ram in haste, who is a Damaai, an untouchable. In Boulder, Colorado where they have settled after several years in a refugee camp, they hardly give it a second thought, but it will be a huge factor when she re-enters her Grandmother’s house; Agastaya is a doctor in New York and he is with Nicky, male, an unacceptable liaison in his Grandmother’s small town; Manasa, foul-tempered and cutting, has despatched her husband and paraplegic father-in-law to a different location, whilst she endures the reunion. The interactions and dialogue amongst the characters are vivid, and one can almost hear them speaking to each other in vociferous and raucous chatter.Prasanti, (originally Prasant) the eunuch who tends Grandmother, is always present and always good for an invidious jibe or some histrionics. To all intents and purposes, she is treated as the true granddaughter.This is a book full of Indian experience, colour and observation, it is full of vernacular, Manas sharply correcting Nicky that it is not Diwali for the Nepali speaking people, but Tihaar. There are lots of colloquial words punctuating the prose with the intention, I believe, to make the story feel more authentic. But it has the opposite effect, it starts to alienate because there is no glossary to assist. This, no doubt, serves to mirror the experience of dislocation that perhaps Bhagwati and Ram experience in Boulder as refugees.Parajuly has is an original voice but in this novel he has struggled to keep the story cohesive. Is this a story about a family reunion, or is the story of Prasanti the overriding focus? Are the politics of the region – and the region itself – what truly motivate the author? The focus is loose, the squabbling amongst the family becomes enervating and depressing at times, and the opportunity is lost to really aid understanding of the history of this small part of India; and yet.. it is a very interesting novel that insightfully transports the reader to a little known area of India.And what an eye-catching cover! Funny and Insightful family drama By Liz Barnsley My grateful thanks to Quercus for the lovely review copy.To commemorate Chitralekha Nepauney’s Chaurasi – her landmark 84th birthday – Chitralekha’s grandchildren are travelling to Gangtok to pay their respects. All three harbour the same dual objective: to emerge from the celebrations with their grandmother’s blessing and their nerves intact: a goal that will become increasingly impossible thanks to a mischievous maid and a fourth, uninvited guest.So I really enjoy a good bit of family drama, especially when it is well formed and often hilarious as is the case right here.An eclectic mix of brilliantly portrayed characters come together and over the course of a funny, insightful and often emotional story we learn more about them and where they have come from.It is a cultural soundbite about an area and a people I know little about -or knew little about until I read this book - the background is fascinating, covering many little rituals and observations on life that are endlessy intriguing. Set against the backdrop of the Gorkhaland movement I learned a lot as I went.My favourite character was Prashanti,without a doubt, but they are all marvellous people to reside with for a while, some of them formidable indeed.An absolutely captivating tale.
