In a heartfelt story set in a picturesque small town in Virginia, Mary McDonough portrays three generations of women in a modern Irish-American family as they navigate marriage, motherhood, and independence. . . The Fitzgibbons--especially the women--have long been the backbone of Oliver's Well, Virginia. Matriarch Mary Bernadette is still striking and tireless at seventy-five, with a generous heart that belies her sometimes sharp tongue. Her husband, Paddy, owns the local landscaping business, daughter Grace is a nun, and son Pat and his wife Megan are successful lawyers. Her grandson, PJ, and his new wife, Alexis, live in a charming cottage behind the main house. Church, family, tradition, and the local historical society--everything Mary Bernadette cherishes is in Oliver's Well. But below the surface, there are fractures. Megan sees the strained relationship between her husband and Mary Bernadette, who has never quite recovered from the painful loss of her first-born son. Megan too is torn between gaining her mother-in-law's approval and living life on her own terms. Alexis loves PJ deeply yet chafes against his grandmother's influence in their marriage. Then a looming scandal brings unexpected tragedy, compelling the Fitzgibbons to determine the depth of their loyalty, find their strength--and repair the bonds that have held a town, and a family, together for so long. With warmth and an abundance of insight, Mary McDonough artfully captures the shifting dynamics of family life--and the revelations they may bear just in time.

By Karen P, CA An insightful, wise story that gives voice to three generations of women as they navigate major milestones and life's more subtle challenges. I really enjoyed getting to know these multi-faceted characters and their men. I particularly liked the steady Megan, felt empathy for young Alexis, and for matriarch Mary Bernadette, too, at times, as each faced her own challenges during this year. This book reminded me that each season of life has its own gifts and challenges, and that they change over time. If we're lucky, we can begin to see ourselves and each other more clearly in the process. Hope there are more books planned. Would definitely enjoy another visit to Oliver's Well.

USA led by Matriarch, Mary Bernedette Fizgibbon. It is an almost out of touch kind of town with little but an ancient loss of a child to keep Mary B going. She does have her town historical society and there will also be a villan but the story focuses on the small day to day comings and goings of Mary's children(adult) her close friend her ailing marriage and life on an enviable smaller and more quiet scale. It is well written and perhaps the best part of the whole book was the moment she advises the use of curtains on the bare blinds. If you are Irish that was a giveaway. Mary B is what we call Lace Curtain Irish. This is a nice book and a gentle read and on a rainy cold night it was perfect.I would have liked more but just what I cannot say as the work hangs together well and the people are real in a plain kind of way.Perhaps it is because it is so close to the bone I do not clearly see its uniqueness.I liked it and the challenges and oh life in a clean small caring town.. Does that still exist

A Modern-Day Irish-Catholic Waltons Family By A Reader While not without flaws, this is a commendable effort by first-time novelist Mary McDonough—a.k.a. “Erin Walton,” who also happened to be my favorite character on The Waltons TV show. (Mary's autobiography was published in 2012. This is her first attempt at fiction.) The book chronicles one year in the life of the fictional Fitzgibbon family of Oliver’s Well, Virginia. You can think of them as sort of a Catholic, modern-day version of the Waltons. However, from the get-go, I had a really hard time getting into the story—hence, the three-star review. Maybe there were too many characters to keep track of, but I thought the beginning just rambled along, with very little plot or action. I was tempted to give up. But finally, about a quarter of the way through, somewhere between pages 100-125 (this is a long book!), things started to pick up and I then quickly read through to the end. When I first started reading, I honestly thought the story was set in the 1950s (or maybe even the 1930s). Like Mary, I also grew up in an Irish-Catholic family, but based on the fictional Fitzgibbon family, her experiences must have been very different, and much more traditional, than mine were. I just couldn't see Mary Bernadette Fitzgibbon, the steely matriarch and main character, as a real person. She seemed more like a bad stereotype. Indeed, most of the characters didn’t seem believable to me, with the exception of the newlyweds, Alexis and PJ. Alexis, an outsider who married into the Fitzgibbon family, was my favorite character because she grew a lot as the story progressed, and while she (along with all the other characters) had a happy ending, hers wasn’t fairytale-ish or totally predictable. Other detractors: The dialogue is a little stilted at times. Also, this book has the shortest chapters I have ever seen in an adult novel. What’s up with this?? All the one- or two-page chapters were really distracting—and some chapters were actually less than a page long! I found this so odd... why didn’t the editor simply combine several chapters into one?If you’re a fan of The Waltons, you’ll probably love this book. To be honest, if this had been written by someone with no name recognition, I doubt I would have picked it up. That being said, I think Mary's writing career shows promise. I believe she is going to write a second novel, and look forward to learning more about it.
