Through a tantalising weave of character and plot, Mapstone keeps us guessing to the end . . . The qualities in her prose are worth reading alone.' Martin Ouvry, Wingate Scholar of Literature Paris 1977. Neither parent will explain, so Charlotte is determined to uncover the truth. Who is the Amazon? And why did she die? 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A fine whodunnit with a range of characters, locations and times. By D. J. Wilcox This was a great, smartly written novel: I suppose it's a "whodunnit" but it's also a character story. Its chapters vary in viewpoint between a handful of the main characters, which is a technique I like: it shows you how the same observable world can justifiably seem so different to different people. They are all clearly defined and completely believeable characters and have interesting, occasionally witty, dialog, Having read a fair number of thriller/mystery books, I also appreciated the story did not exploit gory excess and the darkest corners of behaviour in order to scream "Read me".It is set in a mixture of Paris and London in 1977, and Cornwall in a lovely summer of 1959. I am familiar with (and love) the Cornwall location so this setting was especially welcome for me.I must admit to possible bias, having known the lovely Dr Mapstone for some years, but even had I stumbled on this fine book without this connection I would have been just as happy to read it. And I am happy to recommend it whole-heartedly.
