Garrett In this engaging novel about a dedicated high school English teacher who doubles as a gifted musician and singer-songwriter, novelist Jack Somers not only creates a memorable character in talented and lovelorn Mike Parnell, but he also conveys the profound ways that Mike's abiding passion for music gives his life the purpose, self-expression, connection, and consolation that he needs to sustain him as he struggles to find love and meaning in his work and his relationships, especially with an attractive barista named Fiona and with his distant but supportive father. Parnell's Prime is a first-rate novel!

Jack Somers's novel has all the makings of a great read, from memorable characters to plot twists to emotional yearnings and searching questions. I especially loved the original song lyrics that Somers uses throughout the story, which reveal the internal workings of his main character, Mike Parnell. At the beginning of the novel, the reader learns that Mike has a rich life as a teacher by day and a singer-songwriter by night, but he's unable to see his life in positive terms because he yearns for more. His journey, then, becomes one that we can all relate to. A wonderful book by newcomer Jack Somers!

As a teacher of English in an exclusive all-male high school, he inspires his students with a love for literature and music by being a creator of both. Mike is not so far removed from his students as to be unable to share with them the desire to explore all of the appealing but daunting options life offers those who are gifted with talent and intelligence. Professionally, Mike has found himself. He is an effective, well-liked teacher and motivated faculty-mentor for the school's literary magazine. Personally he embodies all of the ambiguous thoughts and feelings that accompany the decisions of adult life. It is especially in his search for a romantic partner that his music matures and the story unfolds. The coffee house where he frequently performs on open mic nights becomes an incubator for a love that is simple and pure. For those who maintain personal ideals in life, and strive to live them out, this is the right read.
