From Publishers Weekly If Keener’s first short story collection, following her debut novel Night Swim, can be said to have a theme, it might be women’s struggles to reconcile relationships—be they with friends, family, lovers, or enemies—with changing perspective and internal turmoil. In the wrenching “Woman with Birds in Her Chest,” a newly unemployed woman searches for purpose through volunteer work at a hospice. A waitress finally gets a chance to spend time with the regular who intrigues her, with disappointing results, in “Secrets.” Several stories (“Boarders,” “Bird of Grief,” “Heart”) visit the same character at different phases of her romantic life: a naïve college dropout on the verge of being rejected by her boyfriend; a habitual liar and serial monogamist; and, finally, a woman working at stability with a long-distance lover. About the Author Jessica Keener has been listed in The Pushcart Prize under “Outstanding Writers.” Her fiction has appeared most recently in: Connotation Press: An Online Artifact, Night Train, and Wilderness House Literary Review. I read WOMEN IN BED slowly, to savor impossibly beautiful sentences and story echoes that lingered for days. This is a book that should be re-read multiple times. Stunning on every level.

Women In Bed a wonderful read for women and men By Paul Hile Women in Bed, a collection of nine stories from the ever-brilliant Jessica Keener, is an honest, refined testament to the power of the short form. Keener introduces us to several women of different ages who are, at the same time, strong and vulnerable. Each page is seeped in yearning, making each woman’s internal and external struggle valuable and heartbreaking. Each story is rich with hope and despair, happiness and sorrow, and the juxtaposition between each is what makes this collection so good.Keener develops characters that stay with the reader long after the book is finished. After reading Night Swim, Keener’s debut novel, the main character Sarah, a young Jewish woman living in Boston in the 70’s returned to me often. In Women In Bed, each woman and their story, in a remarkable way, whether you are a man or woman, holds true. And there in lies the power of Keener’s writing: Jessica posses the ability to write characters that transcend gender and age and hold true for all readers. Fear not, men: this collection is for you, too.Having now published a novel and story collection, one cannot help but wait with excitement to see what Keener will write next.
