From the bulb of a rare flower blooms ambition and scandal Rome 1635. As Flanders braces for another long year of war, a Spanish count presents the Vatican with a means of disrupting the Dutch rebels' booming economy. His plan is brilliant. They just need the right man to implement it. Enter Ludovico da Portovenere, a charismatic spice and silk merchant. Intrigued by the Vatican's proposal-and hungry for profit-Ludo sets off for Amsterdam. His voyage is interrupted, first by a timid English priest with a message from Rome, then by a storm, then by a pirate raid. The storm brings him a quick-witted young admirer he uses as a spy. The pirate raid brings him a girl, Alina, who won't go home. Each development has significant consequences for Ludo's plans and even greater ones for the people he is involved with. Set in a world of international politics and domestic intrigue, The Chosen Man spins an engrossing tale about the Dutch financial scandal known as tulip mania-and how decisions made in high places can have terrible repercussions on innocent lives. "J.G. Harlond is a real find. The Chosen Man is a novel with everything going for it: a cracking story centered on an intriguing and charismatic hero... the author wants to pull you in and entertain you. And succeeds triumphantly. I'm keeping my fingers crossed there will be more." -- Sarah Harrison author of The Flowers of the Field trilogy

Interesting, though more romance than swashbuckling By Matthew Higgins This is an interesting novel set during the Dutch Tulipmania of the Thirty Years War.J.G. Harlond's writing is superb. She avoids the overly-verbose stylings of many writers of historical fiction. The e-book edition of the novel is very good indeed. This reader recalls only one error, "Mcnab" instead of the correct "McNab". Thus none of the all-too-common sloppy e-book formatting here.So why only 4 stars from this reviewer? It has to do more with him than the book. The book's description from the publisher focuses primarily on Ludovico and from that description the book very much seemed to promise a swashbuckler in the style of Arturo Perez-Reverte's Captain Alatriste. Expecting this, this reader was quite surprised to find that the book is really about the barely-mentioned-in-the-description Alina and is a romance; not a bodice-ripping romance, but a romance nonetheless, and not a genre he leans toward in his reading. Another reader, who enjoys a romance with a strong historical setting, will find Harlond's The Chosen Man a 5 star read.

By CMT Stibbe Harlond delivers on all fronts with The Chosen Man, a compelling blend of historical fiction and thriller set around the time of the 1635 tulip mania scandal. At the heart of the story is a lively duo formed by the appealing reprobate, Ludovico da Portovenere and the ever-glamorous Spanish heroine, Alina, a woman we breathlessly follow from one astonishing adventure to the next. Harlond is one of those authors who has a gift for drawing her readers in with exceptional storytelling and witty dialogue. It’s hard not to care for her characters, especially when Ludo negotiates a deal that latterly separates him from Alina and places her in proximity to a dangerous predator by the name of McNab. But in all of this, Alina must make a choice. A sickly aristocrat, a Spaniard or an Italian pirate? An interesting three-point dilemma.Rich and exquisite, meticulously researched, and powerfully evocative, The Chosen Man is a sumptuous read that will keep you guessing until the end. I’m very much looking forward to the next book in the trilogy.

Horland By Marianne First of all, I would have to say that this novel is not my normal fare..although it is historical, it is not a romance, nor a suspense novel. In spite of this I found it a fascinating fictional narrative about the politics and intrigue in the Netherlands. Well written, it follows Ludo across the nations, as well as Alina, a young girl who happens to be at the wrong place and the wrong time. The twists and turns are many, and though perhaps only subplots in the grand scheme of things, keep the story going swiftly.I found it interesting that this type of thing happened early in the 17th century, and is still happening today, and still with agriculture, yet on a different level. Of course, being part of the agriculture world, this is what I would notice first. Obviously very credible, and I really enjoyed it, and would read other novels by J.G. Horland. As I said, this is not my usual genre, and as such I would caution my readers that this is a secular novel, and there may be extraneous scenes and language found that may not be appreciated by the reader.I received this ebook from Henry Thomas, Reviews Manager at Knox Robinson Publishing free of charge in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to give a positive assessment, and the opinions stated are my own. The Chosen Man
