1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Rex Burwell's tight little masterpiece calls for a sequel! By Roger Fraser Imagine! A tighly-plotted historical novel, character-driven, beautifully written with prose that cries out to be read aloud it's so sonorous, alliterative, and full of funny puns. Best of all, there's not a vampire in sight, or anything else supernatral to lure the reader in. Instead, Burwell depicts events of a few days in the summer of 1927 on the Illinois/Indiana border. Mort Hart, catcher for the White Sox, a Jew, and a lawyer, narrates the murderous goings-on of the Capone mob, the cuckold Ty Cobb's paranoiac pursuit to confirm his growing (justified) suspicions against Hart, Cobb's insane efforts to confront and destroy Capone, whom he owes money and who intends to collect. There is mayhem and murder galore, and a sense of growing menace, as Mort escapes one escapade only to be ensnared in another. Mixed in with all this is the glue of jazz that bonds all these weird mobsters, molls, and ballplayers together in the person of Mezz Mezzprow, former Jew and now 'voluntary Negro' (which reminds us that being Black in the U.S. is a political reality with little to do with the amount of melanin in the skin, as radical a notion today as it was in 1927).Make no mistake. Though Rex Burwell's world seems a comic one, with Keystone-Kop-like pursuits and escapes by the skin of one's teeth, beneath the fun is a noir, absurdist world of brutish caprice, betrayal, and everybody's murderous intent against everybody else (or at least the temptation thereto). Al Capone, always lurking in the background, is a God-like menace with a depraved sense of Old Testament 'justice' he dispenses with fiendish delight, and Mort just barely keeps his moral compass about him through this moral swamp. Everyone is tainted by corruption, and Cobb and Capone are on a collision course that Burwell, playing a kind of authorial deus ex machina, makes sure escapes, just by a hair, a Shakespearean tragic ending with piles of corpses on stage.It's truly brilliant what Burwell has done in two-hundred pages. The last twenty are breathtakingly exciting, with the finest action sequence at the Arrowhead Inn this side of the movies. Burwell at one point has one of his characters say that there are old pilots and bold pilots but no old, bold pilots. Luckily, this same observation does not apply to writers, certainly not to Rex Burwell.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book is fun to read By Mary Shesgreen I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The characters were complex, credible and interesting. The suspense pulled me into the story and kept me engaged. The twists and turns of the story kept me guessing and often laughing. It was fun to read.
